Dancers converge High hopes for Highland Dancing Championships this weekend

By Celeste Lodewyk Marlborough is already home to one of New Zealand’s highland dance champions, but after this weekend there may be a few more.

Blenheim is hosting the New Zealand Highland Dancing Championships starting on Friday and finishing Monday.

This championship is bringing 200 dancers from all over the country to the Floor Pride Civic Theatre where all ages, from five to 18-plus, will dance their hearts out in an effort to take top position.

“All our local dancers have worked really hard to prepare for this event, putting in extra practice hours and polishing their performances.

“Everyone is fit, focused and hoping for placings,” she said.

Marlborough held the top three positions for the 18 and over category at last year’s championship, so hopes are high for more placings this year.

Dancers will be accompanied by live bagpipe music performed by two pipers who have come from Christchurch and Inver-

cargill.

The NZ Highland Dancing Championships is open to the public to watch and has free entry.

Itinerary: Friday 8:30am - 7pm, junior events.

Saturday at 10:30am junior championship presentations held. Senior events follow on from this through to Monday.

Monday at 5pm senior championship presentations held.

There will be a cafe operating in the Wisheart Room.

Pet cat victim of house fire

By Kristy Martin A Blenheim couple were left homeless and devastated after a fire destroyed their house in Alana Place on Monday.

One of their cats also perished in the blaze, which broke out in the master bedroom about 10.40am.

Chief fire officer for Blenheim Volunteer Brigade, Rob Dalton, said it appeared an electric blanket had been accidentally left on or possibly switched itself on while the couple were at work.

More than 20 firefighters, three appliances from Blenheim and one from Renwick, attended after neighbours realised the house was on fire and contacted authorities.

Police were also in attendance.

The two occupants, a husband and wife, were visibly distraught when they arrived at the scene.

Mr Dalton said the couple, who owned the home, also owned two cats, one of which succumbed to smoke inhalation while the other was not found.

He described the fire as a ‘slow build-up fire’ that destroyed everything in the bedroom and caused smoke damage throughout the house.

Work colleagues had organised a place for the couple to stay until they made other arrangements.

Mr Dalton reminded people to turn off electrical appliances at the wall and to close all interior doors before leaving the house.

Support for chopper crash victim

By Kristy Martin The Marlborough community has rallied to support a young father seriously injured in a helicopter crash near Ward at the weekend.

Sam Kersten, a 31-year-old father of two, yesterday remained in Christchurch Hospital with injuries to his spine, ribs, hips and legs after the helicopter he was a passenger in crashed into the side of a steep embankment during a heli-hunting expedition on Sunday.

Mr Kersten, a Spring Creek resident, underwent surgery in Wellington before being flown to Christchurch.

Mr Kersten’s family, including wife Sarah and children Eliza, aged two, and Pete, six months, remained at his bedside yesterday.

The chopper went down in a paddock owned by Marlborough farming identity Doug Avery, at Grassmere, just before 9am on Sunday.

Pilot Grant McCallum, owner of Cloudy Bay Helicopters, was also injured and airlifted to Wellington with leg fractures.

Police said Mr Kersten, who was thrown clear during the crash, had climbed onto the skid when Mr McCallum wasn’t ready and, as a result of the weight shift, the pilot lost control.

Witnesses hailed Mr McCallum a hero and said his actions had saved both men’s lives.

The Civil Aviation Authority is investigating the crash.

Trades academy recognised by PM The Top of the South Trades Academy (TOTSTA) has been recognised at the Prime Minister’s Education Excellence Awards, where it received the 2014 Educational Focus - Takatu Prize.

The awards, held in Wellington last month, celebrate and recognise innovative teaching practices and the award for the academy was a win for the whole region, said TOTSTA manager Shaaron Adams.

The judges said: “Top of the South Trades Academy has taken vocational training to students throughout Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough. Adults have put their interests aside, focussing on students and creating flexible programmes that are achieving results.”

This year has seen more than 300 students from 14 secondary schools undertake Trades Academy courses at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) and Whenua Iti Outdoors, across 17 different areas including automotive engineering, hospitality, hairdressing and beauty, aquaculture, aviation engineering and sport.

SKI AREA NOW OPEN Snowboarders and skiers got their first taste of the slopes for the year when the Rainbow Ski Area opened on Saturday.

BIKE THEFTS Between June 30 and July 4, a bicycle was stolen from a Hospital Road property.

The bike is an orange Diamond Back with a Stock Cycle sticker on the frame.

On Monday this week, a bike was also stolen from a Dillons Point Road property.

The white and black mountain bike was taken sometime between 12pm and 4pm.

Academy courses are open to year 11, 12 and 13 students who have level one NCEA, are committed to learning, and are keen to train towards a career. The students remain enrolled

in school while attending training one day per week at a tertiary provider, working towards a National Certificate and a minimum of NCEA level 2.

The academy involves colleges from the Nelson area, Rai Valley Area School, Marlborough Girls’ College, Marlborough Boys’ College and Queen Charlotte College.

Zombies evil Dear Ed, Zombie Invasion with the graphic picture of gross facial disfiguration is a shocking front page feature.

I think it inappropriate to have this horrific picture on the front of your community newspaper.

The front page is often exposed to children when the newspaper is just ‘lying around the house’.

If a movie had such graphic pictures would it not be rated R18?

Children should not be exposed to such evil horrific pictures.

The world has enough evil without these ‘make believe’ pictures being on the front page allowing viewing by many people (whether they want to or not).

The effect of this is just gradual desensitizing of people to the evil of our society and the gradual acceptance of it as ‘normal’.

Please uphold the integrity and moral standard of your community newspaper and do not allow such shocking pictures on the front page.

Dear Ed, The Key-led government are conning people. Key’s government reminds me of how Muldoon led the National government.

According to Muldoon the government was doing very well, and definitely in the “black”, when in reality the country was so deeply in the “red”.

The population of New Zealand want to face reality, and wake up.

Interest rates are on the up, which is the first indication of worse to come.

They also need to realize that the National Party run a very successful

PR Campaign, and Key employs top advisors.

My belief is, that when things get flush, the people vote National, and when times get hard, they vote Labour to get things back on track.

As a kid, I always heard the saying “With a National Government, the rich get rich and the poor get poorer!”

The National Government motto should be “To make the rich work harder we pay them more, and to make the poor work harder we pay them less” Wake Up New Zealand

Dear Ed, I was very disturbed to see the cover photo you published on the 2nd of July issue of the otherwise excellent Sun newspaper.

Surely there were other good and positive subjects to display than this horrific portrayal of evil.

I must say I was very disappointed by what was printed that day, and trust that there will be more voices than mine to indicate displeasure at what was a totally unnecessary “food for nightmares” photograph.

Please be aware of the hundreds of young children with very impressionable minds and lively imaginations who inadvertently see the newspaper in homes all over our region, and of the parents who had to cope with the fallout of their children’s trying to make sense of what they saw that day.

Memories of a bygone era Blenheim couple Bruce and Faye Partridge both worked at the City Hotel, which is about to be demolished.

They spoke to Adam Poulopoulos about what the iconic hotel, which housed Sir Robert Muldoon, Norman Kirk and other prominent New Zealanders, meant to them.

A Blenheim couple has been reminiscing as the old City Hotel building is prepared for demolition.

Bruce Partridge and wife Faye both worked at ‘The City,’ Bruce as a bartender from 1975-1986, and Faye as a casual waitress for a few years before and during that time.

Bruce was renowned for having the cleanest glasses in town, and still gets recognised in the street now.

He said the building’s destruction marked the end of an era.

“It’s a sad moment. We’ve got a lot of very good memories in there.”

During Bruce and Faye’s time at the hotel it was owned by Gladys ‘Chappie’ Chapman. While Bruce and Faye both worked at the hotel young son Jeffrey could often be found in the living room watching TV, after being given a packet of chips and a bottle of raspberry fizz

by Chappie.

Owner Rob Anderson opted to demolish the hotel after being told it needed to be earthquake-strengthened.

Bruce said he was surprised it needed to come down.

“I was there when it was strengthened in 1981...I’ve been in the building during many earthquakes, some of them big.

“It’s still standing now - I don’t know why it’s getting pulled down.”

Faye said the hotel was known for its home cooking and hospitable staff.

“People used to say, ‘There’s no place like The City.’ It was the best place.”

“It always seemed to be familyorientated. When I was there we had fantastic staff, and they were always long-serving,” Bruce added.

Inevitably 11 years working at the hotel during its heyday left Bruce with a lot of memories, including the task

of cleaning out three 540 gallon beer tanks a week.

The hotel served as a second home for several groups around town, such as Rotary, Zonta and ‘the Queen Street Farmers,’ who Bruce said did most of their business “on a Friday evening over a couple of beers.”

It would also serve as home for sports people, such as those in Blenheim for racing and football tournaments.

Bruce remembers one horse trainer’s antics particularly well.

“There was this tiny 70-year-old man who used to come through every year.

Every year he’d do a streak through the hotel, and one day the boys in blue came through.

“I told him to go and put a tie on so they couldn’t say he had nothing on.

“He went out, got changed and hid in another corner.”

The couple, and the hotel as a whole, shared a good relationship with the police.

Bruce said he remembered the only time the bar was booked for after-hours service.

“The police sergeant was kicked out for drinking too much the night before, and he came back the next night and booked us.

“The seven customers got fined but I got off. Those people all know who they are.”

Despite the incidents, Bruce said he had to break up only nine fights during his 11-year stay.

The building is set to be demolished later this month.

Bruce grew up in Marton and now works at Constellation Brands, while Faye is at Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors.

Socks for leaders Marlborough Boys’ College year 13 pupil Jonathan Cash and Blenheim Lions member Lois Little sold socks in the Forum on Friday as part of Red Socks Day. The pair were raising awareness for

the Sir Peter Blake Trust, which aims to inspire the next generaiton of New Zealand’s leaders.

Jonathan attended the Sir Peter Blake Youth Enviroleaders’ Forum earlier in the year.

Marlborough Girls’ College year 12 pupil Georgia Catterick (pictured) finished fourth in the Junior Women’s Time Trial at the Australia Under-19 National Road Cycling Championships.

She was the fastest New Zealander in the field during the race.

Georgia, 16, also finished fifth in the Junior Women’s Road Race, but did not finish the Junior Women’s Criterium.

The races were held in Canberra over three consecutive days from July 4-6.

The Marlborough contingent battled illness throughout the weekend but still walked away from the South Island School Road Cycling Championships with a medal.

Twelve-year-old Fairhall School pupil Joseph Westend (pictured) finished third in the under-14 boys’ time trial, finishing 14 seconds behind the winner.

The Marlborough Boys’ College under-16 time trial team came agonisingly close to a medal, finishing fourth in their race, two seconds behind third-placed Waimea College.

This was despite being down to three riders, as Niels van Antwerpen was too ill to race.

The event was held on Saturday and Sunday at Ruapuna Raceway in Christchurch.

Basketballers head to nationals Sport

By Adam Poulopoulos Four Marlborough Girls’ College pupils have headed to Auckland to compete at the under-17 National Basketball Championships.

Rachel Vis, 16, Livvy Hodson, 15, Annaliese Raemaki, 15, and Oriana Houra, 15, left yesterday to compete at the tournament, which starts today and finishes on Saturday.

The MGC four will be representing Tasman at the tournament, with the 11-strong squad taken from Marlborough, Nelson, Buller and the West Coast.

The team will play eight games in total, two each day, beginning with a game against Southland at 12:30pm today.

Tasman have been drawn in pool four with Southland, Wellington, Ngati Porou and Taranaki.

Assistant coach/manager Farishta Peterson-Ihaka has worked with the Marlborough players since they were in the under-13 grade.

“It’s one of our best contributions to the team.

“They’re all quite skilled, and they deserve to be there.

“We’re going to Auckland to win.”

Peterson-Ihaka said with the side packed with guards and ball-handlers, the team would look to play a high-tempo style.

She said the team’s fortunes depended in large part on how the team gelled.

“They’re a good team, but they’re from a long way apart, and I hope they can pull together.

“We’ve only had three training weekends in Nelson.”

With the short turnarounds between games she said the players would live and breathe basketball for the four days.

“It’s pretty intense. Mostly they’re at the motel eating or the

stadium playing.

“There’s not much time for anything else.”

The under-17 boys’ tournament will be running concurrent to the girls’ competition, with Jakeb Southey the sole Marlborough representative in the Tasman side.

The games will be streamed live on the Basketball New Zealand website.

Marlborough’s seven-strong junior squash team enjoyed their time at the South Island Age Group Championships in Oamaru over the weekend, with three medal placings.

Quinn Udy won the boys’ under-17 division, with Amelia Wadsworth placing third in the under-15 girls’ division, and Kiriana Andrew third in the under-17 division.

The South Island Champs will be held in Blenheim next year.
