By Adam Poulopoulos Two local women are off to a remote Himalayan district next month as part of a dental volunteer expedition.

Gill Bird and Marise Hunt, who both work in Wairau Hospital’s dentistry unit, are part of an 11-person team heading to northern India on August 9.

They are travelling to Leh District, a Buddhist enclave near the Nepalese and Chinese borders, at the base of the Himalayas.

They will be away for a month altogether, treating patients from Lamdon School, a boarding school catering for students aged five to 18 in the area.

Increased tagging continues

By Adam Poulopoulos Blenheim police are unsure what has caused a recent increase in graffiti around town.

Between 10 and 20 new tags appeared between Marlborough Boys’ College and Athletic Park over the weekend, mostly on power and phone boxes.

The most recent tags followed a spate of tagging on Alabama Road, Redwood Street and Scott Street during the last week.

Constable Andrew Holdaway said although the scale of offending had been seen before, he was not sure what had caused the latest outbreak.

“It could be people competing for turf, or it might be people moving from a new

area.”

He said the latest incidents were part of a wider trend.

“Over the last four weeks we’ve seen an increase in tagging, and especially in the last seven days we’ve had a real spike.”

Over that period the tag ‘SAGE,’ along with references to cannabis and The Crips gang, have been particularly prevalent.

Mr Holdaway said kids aged between 12 and 18 were usually responsible for tagging in the area, but it was not likely the school holidays had played a part in the rise.

By Celeste Lodewyk The Marlborough Art Society will soon be hosting an exhibition with artworks conveying a very strong message.

The ‘Oil on Canvas’ exhibition is an artistic exploration of the issues around increased fossil fuel extraction and opens with a preview night on July 25 from 6pm.

What makes this exhibition unique, said organiser Verena Maeder, is the support that has come from Marlborough, all over New Zealand and even abroad.

“Artists have really embraced the message we are trying to bring through and over 60 entries have come from as far as Bluff to Whangarei - and even Toronto, Canada,” she said.

There will be a number of guest speakers including ‘Oil Free Seas Flotilla’ activist Jeanette Fitzsimons and local innovator Nick Gerritsen on the opening night.

There will be a live auction of selected pieces on the preview night, and some of the proceeds will be donated towards the ongoing work of Clean Energy Action, a Nelson based local action group.

The exhibition will run July 26 to August 3 and is being coordinated by Sue James and Karen Neal of the Marlborough Art Society.

Still riding the waves of royalty Three months on from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s visit to Marlborough, reporter Kristy Martin takes a look at how their highly publicised visit has impacted on our region.

Visitors to Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre almost doubled for the month of April, when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge came to Blenheim, according to museum director Jane Orphan.

The number of guests through the doors of the aviation museum went from 2449 in April last year to 4754 this April, after cheeky photos of Prince William jumping into one of the vintage planes while an amused Kate looked on were beamed around the world.

Ms Orphan said the pictures demonstrated how relaxed the couple were and what a great time they were having.

The young royals were given a personal tour on April 10 by famed filmmaker and aviation buff Peter Jackson, whose collection of World War 1 aircraft and memorabilia are permanently housed at the museum.

“People told staff they were in Australia and saw it on TV and had to come over.

“And they did – straight away,” Ms

Destination Marlborough general manager Tracy Johnston said other visitors had seen the Blenheim visit, which included a walk-through of Seymour Square, on British television.

“We had a report from one of the accommodation providers in Marlborough that they had received a booking from the UK the day after the visit, as a result of a traveller from the UK seeing the

TV coverage.”

Up to 100 media representatives came to the region to give coverage to the one-day event, followed by three prominent Chinese magazine editors, from ELLE, ELLE Men, and Rayli Fashion Pioneer – who visited last month as they followed in the footsteps of the royal couple.

Ms Johnston said the royal visit had also afforded Destination Marlborough opportunities to pitch next year’s Classic Fighters event to

the British media.

The organisation had also created an online advertising campaign promoting Marlborough as a Queen’s Birthday Weekend destination for local and regional neighbours, which reached an audience of 50,000 and received more than 860 additional visits to the official regional website over a two week period.

And then there was the social media storm.

According to a Tourism New Zealand report, local content from the 10-day royal tour was seen by more than 30 million people worldwide via social media.

Ms Johnston said a photo of Prince William and Kate leaving Wither Hills winery, following their private lunch, gained nearly 800 likes and was shared 91 times on the Destination Marlborough Facebook page that day, reaching more than 10,000 people.

The team is made up of volunteers from New Zealand, Australia and the UK. Gill said Leh’s status as a tourist region had led to dental problems in the area.

“It’s a trekking town now, and the tourists

have bought sugar, lollies and a lot of other sugar-processed food.

“Lollies are sold at every corner shop and the kids love it - it’s an epidemic now.

“Decay is rampant. They’ll be a lot of extraction, pulp treatments and heavy filling work.”

She said their expedition was the last before winter, when access to the area is reduced as it ices over.

During their three-week stint in Leh the group expects to treat about 2000 patients, a change from the 15 patients Gill and Marise treat at Wairau Hospital each day.

“It’ll be long days too, and school is open on Saturdays, so we’ll be working six days a week,” Gill said.

Gill said another challenge would be adapting to the altitude, as Leh sits about 3500 metres above sea level.

“Apparently you do nothing on your first day except lie in bed as you get acclimatised.”

At the end of the trip they will take a five-day trek at the base of the Himalayas as thanks for their work.

Gill and Marise want to thank Saint Clair Family Estate and the Blenheim dental community, who have contributed money and dental products for the expedition.

JPs recognised Ten Justices of the Peace from around the region were rewarded for their long service on Friday.

Mayor Alistair Sowman presented them with awards during a ceremony at the council chambers.

Mr Sowman said the JPs had played a crucial role in the Marlborough community.

New manager for Community Law

By Adam Poulopoulos After 15 years in the organisation, Stephanie Moses (pictured) has been appointed manager of Community Law Marlborough.

Ms Moses had her first day in the new job earlier this month, taking over from Raewyn Trethaway, who has headed to Bougainville to work with Voluntary Services Abroad after 18 months in the job.

Ms Moses has previously worked for Community Law as a case worker and education coordinator.

Her postgraduate diploma in dispute resolution and mediation led her to found Community Mediation Marlborough, a separate organisation, four years ago.

She said she wanted a challenge, and the organisation was an important part of the Marlborough community.

“It’s really good being able to help the community solve their issues, and empowering them to solve their own problems, without it costing a thing.

“A lot of people have multiple issues and it can take time to deal with those problems.”

Ms Moses said her first challenges came with the start of the new financial year.

Understanding grief

By Kristy Martin Grief is a very personal thing, according to Tricia Irving Hendry from Skylight.

It does not just occur when someone dies, but can also present itself during times of illness, family and relationship break-ups, drug or alcohol abuse, crime and unemployment.

About 100 people turned up to hear Ms Irving Hendry speak about grief and loss at the Blenheim Club last week.

The two free seminars were put on by Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors in order to help the Marlborough community better understand grief.

“Often we don’t realise how huge it can be for people,” said Ms Irving Hendry, deputy chief executive of Skylight, a national loss and grief support organisation.

“Grief and trauma affects all of the person – their thoughts and bodies, their relationships, their sense of spirituality, how they see themselves in the world.”

Ms Irving Hendry, who became a widow with young children at age 38, aims to give people strategies to better cope with grief or to help them assist grieving friends,

CuRFew broken

At 11pm on Friday, a 17-yearold unemployed male was arrested on Grove Rd for breaching his bail.

He was found intoxicated outside his curfew hours.

He was held in custody and appeared in the Blenheim District Court on Saturday morning.

Bad behaviour At 2.30am on Saturday, an unemployed female was caught drink driving after she tried to drive away from Paddy Barry’s pub.

She had already been removed from the premises for her level of intoxication and poor behaviour.

The 24-year-old was charged with refusing an officer’s request for a specimen of blood.

People are being asked to light a candle on the night of August 1 to remember someone they’ve lost.

Violent outburst Drug stash

At 1.35am on Saturday, a 26-year-old unemployed female was arrested at Paddy Barry’s for insulting behaviour likely to cause violence.

She began swearing and abusing another woman in a group outside the bar.

Police said this would have led to a fight if officers had not intervened.

The woman was held until sober and received a precharge warning.

Drunk and lost

At 7.15am on Saturday, a 17-year-old was arrested when he the owner of a High Street property found him sitting on the back doorstep.

He was released without charge when it was discovered he was extremely intoxicated and lost.

At 11.40pm on Saturday, a 16-year-old was spoken to by police after he was found fighting in Litchfield Street.

He also had a small amount of cannabis.

The teenager was referred to the Blenheim Youth Aid Section.

A 17-year-old also involved in the fight was arrested and released when sober.

Sniffed out At 12.10am on Monday, a 42-year-old male was arrested for breaking into vehicles in Alfred Street.

The Blenheim dog unit conducted a track from the vehicle and located the offender on High Street.

He was held in custody to appear in the Blenheim District Court later that morning.

Bypass now!

Dear Ed, I just do not figure what ticks in the tiny brains of council and councillors like the deputy mayor who don’t want a bar of a bypass.

“Clarkie” in Friday’s paper was right. The “truckies” want the bypass because they can see the logic and savings.

I followed two truck and trailers down Grove Road and then Main Street down which they went en route from Christchurch. Progress down Grove Road was slow due to the trucks at roundabouts.

As for the bypass scaring one or two councillors, perhaps they should sit their driving licences again?

Dear Ed, His Worship the Mayor should be commended for his statement in the media: If we can all work together, we can achieve marvellous things for Picton.

Less positive though is the MDC’s stand re development in Picton.

The lead council should take is severely compromised by projects undertaken and proposed.

A useless bus shelter comes to mind amongst many other projects.

But it is not the “puppet” Mayor or the “puppet” Picton councillors who should be taken under the microscope.

It is the “puppeteers” behind the scenes who deserve a good look at and who run the “Puppet Theatre”.

These managers, heads of departments or associated council quangos actually most of the times “just don’t know any better”, have very limited professional abilities or judgment.

What they lack in these qualities though they make up twice in self importance and arrogance.

The CHCH Council showed the way how to treat useless CEO’s.

one on one with the Sun

High achiever Growing up, all Tom Morgan ever wanted to do was win his local science fair. Last year, the 18-year-old not only did just that, his experiment drew recognition from Prime Minister John Key and won him $50,000. Here, he talks to Kristy Martin about his studies, his new passion and his upcoming trip to Poland.

When Tom began his study on the Vitamin D levels in oyster mushrooms, not even he realised the full potential of the experiment.

It has been said the findings of the former Marlborough Boys’ College student’s study, which saw him growing the mushrooms in the dark and exposing them to ultraviolet light, could change the way Vitamin D deficiency is addressed in New Zealand.

The experiment could have huge implications for those suffering debilitating conditions like osteoporosis.

It is quite an achievement for an 18-year-old.

“I’ve always had an interest in science, how things work,” Tom explains.

“Science fairs were a big thing and I remember watching the Year 13s going up to get their prizes and hoping that would be me one day.”

Tom’s entry at the Marlborough Lines Science and Technology Fair went on to win the 2013 Prime Minister’s Future Scientist Prize, where he was presented with his trophy by John Key at a ceremony in Wellington and awarded $50,000.

He also won the Genesis Energy Supreme Award at the Realise the Dream national school science and technology awards.

The judges were impressed by the teenager’s determination and resilience in his research, plus the way he managed to develop a simple and inexpensive testing method using common laboratory equipment.

Tom’s mother Cathy says it is her eldest son’s ability for deep thinking that has given him a good grounding for science.

She remembers when he was a young child he had a tendency to “pull things to bits” and make modifications to the items he came across.

“He’s always been quite a deep thinker and a problem solver.”

Tom is now studying engineering at the University of Canterbury.

He says it took a while to get used to the different style of teaching that varsity offers and that the course is quite “full on”.

One escape is his newfound passion for film photography, which developed after he found an old Olympus OM-2 camera belonging to his father.

Teaching himself how to use the camera is probably typical of someone who has always been curious about how things work.

In the Christchurch landscapes, the sea and the earthquake-stricken CBD, he has found much to photograph.

His enjoyment comes from “learning the old way (of photography), where you really have to think about what you are doing.”

Tom’s next big challenge comes when he heads to Warsaw, Poland, in September to compete in the European Union Young Scientist Competition.

While he doesn’t fancy his chances in the contest, which brings together budding scientists from all over the world, he instead hopes to come away

with new ideas and inspiration, to learn all he can from the experience.

As far as future plans go, Tom is looking forward to delving into mechanical engineering and hopes to end up in the field of

biomedical engineering.

He is particularly intrigued by the advancements in biomedicine and aims to one day develop healthcare applications.

His face lights up when he talks about things like mechanical

heart valves and the use of 3D printers to grow new cartilage for arthritis sufferers.

“Imagine what they will be doing in even five or ten years time,” he said.

By Celeste Lodewyk The Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year Show is an event that brides look forward to every year.

It’s the perfect excuse to get back into their wedding dresses, recreate their hair and makeup and walk onstage and show off their beauty and unique styles.

Last year’s show saw 19 brides take part and loads of beautiful prizes that were donated by local businesses.

Two of those brides were Sarah Kingi and Elisha Shefford, and although they didn’t win one of the major prizes, they still walked away thrilled with the experience.

Sarah Kingi Sarah paraded in her ivory strapless gown which glittered with sequins and was gathered in the bodice. One of her unique features was her silky blue shoes.

She says getting back into her dress was “nerve-wracking” as she was 15 weeks pregnant with her son Hunter (now 7

months) at the time.

“I was so happy to wear my dress again, that was the biggest highlight of the show.”

Backstage the brides enjoyed nibbles and shared photographs from their weddings.

Overall Sarah enjoyed her experience and encouraged other brides to take part in the show.

“Definitely do it! You get to wear your dress again and the prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd are amazing,” she says.

Elisha Shefford Elisha was thrilled to get back into her dress as she too was in the early stages of pregnancy with son Alex (now 5 months).

“I was nervous but it was such a great experience and I was so glad to have an excuse to wear my dress again,” she says.

Elisha’s beautiful Mikaella Bridal gown was silk with an organza trail that was layered, and she wore a flower as a head piece featuring tiny crystals.

She was supported by a table of friends who came from Nelson as well as family.

“I have always wanted to be in the show so I had a great time and it was really interesting to see all the different wedding styles.

“There were lots of laughs backstage and everyone seemed to be having a great time,” she says.

Both Sarah and Elisha received a goodie bag of prizes including slippers, handbags, perfume and vouchers.

Winter Warmth 2014 Warm baby, happy baby A heater is a good way to keep your baby cosy in the winter.

Warmth can help prevent illnesses like colds and coughs. But there are some precautions to take while using a heater that might help make your baby more comfortable: Heaters dry the moisture in the air.

This can dry your baby’s skin and nasal passages.

In extreme cases, dry air can lead to itchy skin and nose bleeds. To prevent the air from drying, you can humidify it with a steamer or humidifier.

Dress your baby in layers when the heater is on so you can take layers off as the air warms.

Don’t dress baby too warmly. Once the heater is off, layers can be re added such as a woollen cap, mittens and warm socks to keep baby warm.

Heating your baby’s room correctly and safely is important.

Don’t forget to air out the room regularly.

Using a heater or blower with the doors and windows closed can make the room stuffy and hard to breathe in.

So open the door or windows at least once a day to change the air in the room.

If you keep a room closed for too long with a heater or blower, it can make the air unhealthy.

Keep your heater out of baby’s reach.

Bright coil heaters may look like an attractive toy to crawling babies.

Heaters can get hot to touch when they are on and can cause burns.

Also, keeping your baby too close to the heater could dry out skin and cause sweating.

Maintain your heater as advised in the owner’s manual or manufacturer’s instructions. This can prevent malfunctions that could lead to short circuits or the release of toxins.

Whatever way you choose to heat your baby’s room, always keep an eye on your baby when the heater is on.

Quilting open day Picton Quilters’ Inc. are having their open day this Saturday, and members old and new are welcome.

The event is being held at the Port of Marlborough Pavilion from 10am to 3pm.

Refreshments are available at the event.

The group will be finishing off some quilt tops they have started, and are inviting new members to have a go too.

The 23-strong group, made up of members from Picton and Blenheim, sew quilts for the needy, including premature babies.

They sent 13 quilts to Seddon after the earthquake last year, and about 150 after the Christchurch quake in 2011.

ITM CUP Former All Blacks halfback Jimmy Cowan has signed with Tasman for the upcoming ITM Cup season.

The 50-test veteran is expected to suit up for Tasman’s opening game of the season, to be held on Sunday, August 17 at Lansdowne Park, against Hawke’s Bay.

Marlborough impresses in Seddon Shield

By Adam Poulopoulos After a week of fierce competition, the Marlborough primary schools under-52 kilogram rugby team have finished second in the annual Seddon Shield competition.

The tournament was held last week at Lansdowne Park and featured five representative teams from the Top of the South.

Marlborough was defeated by eventual champions Nelson on the opening day, but recovered to win their remaining three games, including a thrilling 32-22 win over Golden Bay on Friday morning.

Three Marlburians, lock Charlie Taylor, centre Joel Lavender and openside flanker Sky BuskettBarnes, made the tournament team.

Marlborough coach Rick Line said the competition had been a success.

“The kids loved it.

“It’s a good tournament because the kids are all roughly the same size, so it is more about their skills than how big they are.”

Lock Charlie Taylor is put down by two Golden Bay defenders.

Marlborough’s Harry McKenzie goes up for a lineout, with teammate Caleb Young looking on.

Marlborough, who last won the tournament in 2010, improved from last year’s third-place finish.

Amelia Wadsworth, 14, Quinn Udy, 15, and Kiriana Andrew, 15, will all be competing at the National Secondary Schools Squash Championships in Nelson, beginning on August 8.

While also competing for their schools, all three are in the running for the New Zealand Secondary Schools team heading to Australia later in August.
