Bride winner Sara Bishell wins title for 2014

Story and photos by Celeste Lodewyk For the second time this month Sara Bishell has made the front page of the Sun newspaper, and this time it was for winning the Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year Show for 2014 held on Saturday night at the Marlborough Convention Centre. Sara, a general practitioner at Wairau Community Clinic, looked stunning and radiant in her Manuel Mota designer gown as she glided along the catwalk in front of more than 170 audience members, who were so impressed with her they voted her as ‘Audience Choice’. Judges awed by calibre of brides “Each bride is lovely and unique” - Judge Julie Penman Continued from page 1. Her gown was purchased from Auckland store Modes Bridal Boutique and was ivory with a tulled overlay featuring pale gold and white beading. “It was the third gown I tried on. I tried many after but none compared to this one,” she said. For Sara entering the show was simply an opportunity to wear her gorgeous gown again and to have a fun night with a friend who had also entered. “I was thrilled when I won Audience Choice but to be named the overall winner is

mind blowing,” she said. “It has been so much fun. It’s almost a shame that this is a competition because everyone looks so beautiful and has been having a great time. “I did feel my lip quivering at one point because I was so nervous, but I kept telling myself to walk slowly and smile,” she laughed. Sara was joined by husband Simon on stage for a congratulatory hug as the audience cheered. Winning second place was Amy Nicholls and in third place was Kirby Best. Miss Photogenic, judged by the Sun newspaper, was

awarded to Tania McCaa, and the Lucky Bride $300 prize draw went to Kate Harrison. Prior to the show each of the 17 brides spent time with judges Julie Penman, Paula Pope, Carol Vercoe, Arthur Devine and Cathy HardieNeal who looked at every detail from their gowns to their hair, makeup and accessories. Throughout this judging process judges remarked; “This is really hard, each bride is lovely and unique and the calibre is high”. Halfway through the show the Bridegroom category attracted a lot of interest

with 10 grooms taking to the stage. The winner was Jeremy Oswald. Show organiser Carol Taylor wishes to thank everyone who attended this year’s event, and to all the sponsors who very generously donated items for prizes. See more photos on page 13.

Auction raises $7300 for SPCA By Kristy Martin It’s easy to feel generous when you know your money is going to help some cute and cuddly canines and kittens. Community members weren’t afraid to dig deep at a fundraising dinner for SPCA Marlborough, held at Hunter’s Wines on Saturday, raising $7300 for animal care. One big spender on the night was Wellington woman Andi Cossar, who took home a number of auction items and also won the raffle. Ms Cossar, a volunteer with SPCA Wellington, spent over $400 after travelling over for the event. “If I’m in a position to help, then why not?” she said. “It’s important to improve the lives of animals and stop the suffering of animals, and to give hope where others think there is none.” Ms Cossar was the winning bidder on a Max Relax gift basket, Fudge Factory and Regal Salmon vouchers, a Hairy Mussel pack, a Barkers hamper, a Top Shots voucher and a glass platter dish. That’s all of her Christmas shopping

CHOPPER APPEAL This year’s Westpac Chopper Appeal managed to raise $205,194.07 for the Life Flight Trust and the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust. That figure is pa r t of the $1,383,505.20 raised across the country during the appeal. Westpac’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Sue Foley, thanked New Zealanders for their generosity, which she said helped keep the choppers’ life-saving rescue missions possible.

done in one go, she said. Event organiser Vicky Green said she was ‘stoked’ with how much cash was raised, which will go toward the daily running of the SPCA centre at Renwick, as well as vet care, microchipping and desexing of the animals. She thanked all the sponsors, particularly Air New Zealand, who donated a $500 travel voucher, the Scenic Hotels group and Evolve Jewellery. Vicky also wanted to let people know that Zeus had finally found a home. The German Shepherd-Boxer cross, featured in the Sun on July 11, was taken in over the weekend by a Blenheim family.

IRD SCAM Phone scammers pretending to be from Inland Revenue are hounding people for money and threatening actions such as deportation and prison if not paid. An IRD spokesperson said the scammer aggressively demands money and directs the person to go to a New Zealand Post shop counter where they can deposit the money into a fake bank account.

Top right, auctioneer Mike Blair and Andi Cossar, who won the raffle. Bottom right, organiser Vicky Green, with some of the donated auction items, which included custom made SPCA biscuits.

Irish bar caught serving minors Seumus' Irish Bar in Picton is in strife after staff were caught selling alcohol to minors. The pub was one of a dozen licensed premises visited during a police sting last weekend. Eleven other venues refused service to the 16-year-old volunteers who were covertly working for police. However, Seumus Irish Bar agreed to sell alcohol to the underage teens and now faces further action from the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority.

It’s Just Better.

Senior Sergeant Peter Payne said it was the seventh licensed premises to be found selling alcohol to a minor in Marlborough this year. "We make no secret of the fact that we will be out checking that licence holders are complying with their obligations so it is very disappointing to continue to find managers and staff falling short of those obligations." Snr Sgt Payne said there was an expectation that all licence holders met their obligations under the Liquor Licensing laws all of the time and that included checking to ensure

the people attempting to buy alcohol were of legal age. "There is simply no excuse for not checking a customer's ID and anyone who fails to do so can expect to be held to account," he said. The sting was a joint operation by police, the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board and Liquor Licensing officials. Police have warned sporting clubs that they will be targeted next in similar operations over the coming months.

English teacher Michelle Dawson is asking her Year 10 students, including Hannah Brooks, 14, and Kathryn Hamilton, 15, to interview people about their memorable food experiences.

By Kristy Martin Food not only stops us from being hungry, it brings people together, evokes joy and transcends age, gender and culture. Students at Marlborough Girls’ College are hoping to explore all this by interviewing members of the community about their own personal food memories. The idea is the brainchild of English teacher Michelle Dawson, who is asking people to come forward and share one food memory with her students, with the information to be compiled into a book. “Food is such an important component in culture, religion and social interaction,” says Michelle.

“The food that we choose to eat is selected due to a wide variety of different influences. “I’m sure everyone has a food memory.” Food can spark interesting conversations and it also plays an important part in how we celebrate, she said. “We’d love to be able to make contact with 30 people who would be willing to share a significant food memory in an interview.” Michelle and her Year 10 students want to be clear they are not after general conversations about food, they want a specific food memory that can be related as a story. They are hoping to find people who re-

member things like baking a wedding cake during food rationing in New Zealand, eating food such as tripe or tongue that some people might consider unpalatable, a memory of Mum or Gran’s cooking, using ‘old school’ cooking methods, sharing a meal with someone famous or participating in a traditional and cultural food events. The stories will be typed up into a booklet and every participant will be presented with a copy at an afternoon tea held by the students later in the year. Interested people can email Michelle on foodiemichelle@gmail.com or call her on 03 5777404.

From Normandy to Amsterdam By Adam Poulopoulos A Picton couple has returned from their cycling trip across Europe with plenty of stories to tell. Carl and Lesley Hintz (pictured) began their journey at Normandy on Anzac Day, took them through France and up the Rhine River, and finished in Amsterdam about two months later. Their journey was 2027 kilometres long, at an average of 60 kilometres per day. Lesley said they wanted to see places other than the big cities. "The journey was all about experiencing the country, the food and the people. "One family invited us to their place for coffee. That's the kind of thing you don't get on a coach trip." The couple preferred to stick to cycle trails and canal paths, which were often first constructed as paths for horses to pull barges down to the water. The trip was largely on flat terrain, with less wind than in New Zealand conditions. They only booked accommodation for the very beginning and end of the trip, and only carried about 10 kilograms each. Lesley said this occasionally posed a Lesley and Carl in Haarlem, near Amproblem. "We were lucky enough each of those four German town of Speyer, stuck out for its times to get the last bed in town." sheer size. Particularly memorable sights included "It would have been about 200 acres. medieval and Roman festivals, and the "It had a jumbo jet set on a plinth, and that oldest Jewish graves in the world, in Worms, was just one thing." 'Did it hurt when you fell from heaven? Cos your face is munted.’ Kind of a reverse pick-up line.

I’ve never been so lucky. I only ever get them when young ladies are trying to get into my wallet!

A guy got me to feel his shirt and said “do you know what that’s made of? Boyfriend material.”

“I got ‘stick around kid. I’ll show you some real country.’ That was my husband. I guess it worked!”

I was in Spain and I heard ‘your mother was a thief. She stole two stars from the sky and gave them to your eyes.’ It was quite funny with the Spanish accent.

Letters to the editor

Big issues

Dear Ed, Two items I have noticed lately, in your newspapers, letters to Editor. 1. The Grove Road Bridge: Some ten years ago, I phoned the Council works manager regarding building another bridge along side the existing one, to take traffic in both directions. His reply “ perfectly O.K the way it is, the truckies have a good understanding of coping with it”. So nothing was done. 2. The Government debt: Now 63 billion dollars. John Key made a statement some time back, it was OK to borrow up to 70 billion dollars! What then? Is New Zealand up for a mortagee sale? I would say that now it is impossible for the Government to pay interest on the debt! So now maybe New Zealand has been set up for a World Government to take over. And all the communication cables to every household are part of that system K O Lawrence

Letters on issues of community interest are welcomed. Guidelines are that they should be no longer than 150 words. They must be signed and a street address provided to show good faith, even if a nom de plume is provided for publication. The editor reserves the right to

abridge letters or withhold unsuitable letters from publication. Send or fax them to the address on page two, or e mail them to news@blenheimsun.co.nz. Please note that your name and street address must also be provided in e mails.

Rubbish collections Dear Ed, With a new contractor collecting both rubbish and recycling materials it could be a good time to revisit the type of containers we put out each week. Some areas have small wheelie bins for different types of rubbish instead of it going into a plastic bag. The recycle crates blow over if packed with light goods in windy conditions and can be heavy if packed with glass bottles. I am aware of people shifting house and taking their bin with them and putting two bins out on a reqular basis when the rate charge is for one bin only and nothing extra, so some people are not using the bins or having to apply for a bin when the one allocated to that address is still useable but not where it should be. This also means some people are

getting a service they are not entitled to and others cannot use it. If we had wheelie bins more items could be recycled and have less plastic going into the land fill. Mark Reid

Not tech savvy Dear Ed, The withdrawal of International Reply Coupons by the Post Office took place about 10 days ago. This was a worldwide decision, not just NZ. If one writes to a NZ address and wants a reply it is common courtesy to enclose a stamped addressed envelope. This is no use overseas so one sends an International Reply Coupon ($2.50) instead. Now what? Not everyone has a computer or email access. Is this a form of discrimination? Bullying, it seems, is not exclusively just among the young! I have written to my MP, Mr Colin King, about this and eagerly await his reply. I’m illiterate!

Submissions needed

Dear Ed, It’s a shame there are not many written submissions for the future of the Boys and Girls College. If all the people who go to the reunions at the schools could get a pen in hand. I’ve been reading about what they intend to do and make seperate schools. Where would the land be for that? If you need know where to send correspondence, write to Janet Kelly, 31 Courtney St Motueka 7120. K Warren

Dear Ed We have been with Tiny Mighty Power for some time with whom we had been very happy. When the opportunity came about to join Grey Power Electricity we decided to go with them as we believed they offered us better value for money. As happens, Tiny Mighty rang to see why we were changing and offered us an incentive – a 25% for prompt payment – to stay with them. In good faith we accepted their offer, but.... it didn’t happen! On questioning them later as to why not, they firstly went back to our

recorded conversation and found I was correct. The person who offered us the original incentive rang again to say he had made a mistake. No apology, just a mistake was made. He should have said that the offer was just for the months of June, July and August. We were then informed that all customers over the age of 65years would receive the 25% discount for the winter months of June, July and August. If this applies to you, are you receiving your entitlement? Judi Woolley

Bargains the cure for midwinter blues By Kristy Martin If you’re in the market for some beautiful handmade bargains, head to the Marlborough Craft Collective’s Mid-Winter Market this Saturday. There will be 22 stalls at the event selling everything from furniture, jewellery, bone carvings and flax art to toys, childrenswear, bags and handpainted silk scarves. There will also be coffee, face painting and a variety of food stalls. “We are hoping people will walk around and spend a lot of time there,” said Amy Maxwell, co-founder of the collective. “We’ve tried to get, where possible, goods that are handmade by the person selling them.” “We’ve also tried to keep it as local as possible,” added co-founder Deanna Schroder. “We’re trying to focus on that community aspect, and knowing where your stuff comes from.” Deanna said she hoped people would take the time to stop and

talk to the sellers, who would be available to answer queries about their wares. “We want people to take the time to look at what they are buying and have a conversation with the stall holder.” This will be the second market hosted by the Marlborough Craft Collective, following the success of their 'Handmade' market last October. Deanna and Amy established the collective last year in order to give craftspeople a chance to mingle with like-minded others and to help inspire and support each other. There are now about 150 members in the group, proof that, according to Amy, there is no shortage of ‘crafty people’ in Blenheim. The market will be held at the St Mary’s Church hall on Maxwell Road from 10am-2pm on Saturday. It is a free entry, cash only event and there will be plenty of parking available. Marlborough Craft Collective founders Amy Maxwell and Deanna Schroder with some of the items that will be on sale at Saturday's Mid-Winter Market.

Roundabout work continues Work on the Springlands rounadabouts remains on schedule. Marlborough Roads manager Frank Porter said services work in the area was nearly complete. He said work onto the pavement proper will begin in the next month, with temporary roundabouts to be installed. Work is expected to be completed by early December. At the end of the project, roundabouts will have been installed at the intersection of Nelson and Boyce Streets, and where Middle Renwick Road meets Battys Road and Murphys Road.

Plans to reuse grape waste Marlborough’s grape waste could soon be turned into compost and stock feed. Local wine producers have come together with council in a collaborative approach to manage grape marc disposal and generate a new, commercially viable and environmentally sustainable product from grape waste. Facilitated by council, participating wine companies have formed the Marlborough Grape Marc (MGM) group to advance a proposal for an environmentally sustainable use of the wine industry’s waste streams. The MGM group is chaired by Eric Hughes of Pernod Ricard Winemakers with representatives from Cloudy Bay, Constellation Brands, Delegat’s, Giesen, Indevin, Matua, Mount Riley, NZ Wineries, Pernod Ricard Winemakers,

Family matters most Imagine walking away from the high-flying city life and bright lights of Sydney to cross the ditch and settle into a quiet country life in Marlborough. That’s exactly what Nadia Crighton did nine years ago after deciding to leave her job as a magazine editor to focus on what truly mattered to her - family. Celeste Lodewyk talks to Nadia about her life and the many successes she has enjoyed along the way. Born in Wales, Nadia immigrated to Western Australia with her family at age three after the steel works shut down, forcing her parents to seek better employment opportunities. Her life took an unusual change of direction when her parents divorced and at age 14 Nadia left school to train as a chef. After a short period she decided to move to Sydney with her mother and returned to school, where she met the love of her life Brad Crighton. Twenty one years later they are blissfully married with four beautiful children, LexiLou, Cooper, Addilane and Élodie. “People can’t believe we are still together,” Nadia grins. “Because we both came from divorced families, commitment and marriage have always been very important to us. “But ultimately we are best friends.” A year after meeting Brad, Nadia ventured into the journalism industry, starting out in broadcasting which later led her to one of the most exciting experiences in her career - reporting for the Sydney Organising Committee for the 2000 Olympic Games (SOCOG). “I was the junior sports reporter for Channel 7’s website. I rubbed shoulders with all the Olympic athletes and can even remember watching Cathy Freeman winning gold in her famous 400m race, it was incredible,” she says. She went on to work in a variety of magazines, including the Truckin Life and Truck magazine as deputy editor. “The things you do in this profession,” she laughs. Just before moving to New Zealand, Nadia was a highly successful magazine editor working in Sydney, living in a penthouse apartment and enjoying the thrills and spills of a high salaried job. “Working in the city it was all about what car you drove, what labels you wore and it was all materialistic crap that suddenly seemed so trivial.

“I was 24 when Brad and I were told we couldn’t have children and I remember looking out of my office window and could see right then that there was more to life than just working. “So we decided that we would come to Marlborough where Brad’s parents owned a vineyard and start a new life,” she says. The night before their farewell party Nadia found out she was pregnant with her first child, Lexi-Lou (7). “It was incredible, it was almost like the moment I stopped thinking about conceiving it happened.” In Marlborough Brad became vineyard manager for his parents and the couple branched into contracting and set about building their business, BNC Contracting. “We still laugh now about how different our lives are. If someone told us 15 years ago we would have this life I would have had them committed,” she laughs. Nadia has continued to work in journalism and is working from home as the content manager for this&that Magazine, as well as freelance work for a number of magazines here and in Australia. Not one to sit idle for long, Nadia is already eyeing up her next career goal. “I plan to study law once my kids are older, focusing on politics and children’s rights. “But for now I am enjoying being able to roll around the floor with my babies and dance to the Nadia Crighton pictured with her husband Brad and children Élodie (9 months), Lexi-Lou (7), Cooper (6) and Wiggles,” she smiles. Jac Lockington Since establishing her new business in May 2013, Jac Lockington has helped many first home buyers into new homes. Jac’s 21 years experience in the financial industry enabled her to navigate clients through what was a tough year in 2013, challenged by restrictions imposed by the Reserve Bank on lending rules. “Between the earthquakes and lending restrictions we were hit by a number of financial challenges. “But with goal setting and financial planning I have helped many people through and they are now in their own homes or working toward achieving their goals,” she said.

Jac also advises people on how to protect their financial future, whether it be mortgage or rent protection insurance or setting a financial plan so people avoid getting into difficulty later on. “The one thing I am really passionate about is helping people to achieve their goals, and knowing they have a sound plan in place so they can enjoy life without worrying about their finances,” she said.

The Marlborough District Council has set up a project team to help the Awatere community clarify its needs for new public facilities as part of the rebuild after the 2013 earthquakes. The team is tasked with consulting widely across the Awatere community to establish its immediate needs and the requirements to meet future growth in the area. The move comes after council received a number of requests from the Awatere community during its Annual Plan process that related to the damage of community facilities and buildings in the quakes. Given the different perspectives expressed in the submissions, council needs a clearer picture of the whole community’s needs before it can make any financial commitment to repairs or rebuilding. The project group is tasked with talking to everyone who made submissions, with any other interested individuals and with the various other community groups and service providers in the wider Awatere area. “The current situation provides an opportunity to re-shape the way in which community facilities for the Awatere are provided, and this could involve redeveloping a shared multifunctional space that is both financially and operationally sustainable, and meets the needs of future generations” said project leader Jon Cunliffe. After community consultation, the project team will report back to council who will consider options for remediation and redevelopment.

Paul Sell of the Marlborough Osteopathic Services Ltd.

Osteopathy focuses on total body health Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk One common misconception about osteopathy is that it only involves the neck and spine, when in fact it focuses on total body health. By treating and strengthening the musculoskeletal framework, which includes the joints, muscles and spine, an osteopath can treat a huge variety of complaints, says Paul Sell of Marlborough Osteopathic Services Ltd. Paul is one of a number of qualified and registered osteopaths working from the Waikura Street based practice, treating patients from as young as two days old right through to the elderly. Originally from the UK, Paul has had an interesting journey into the industry as well as to New Zealand. It all began when Paul met the business’s current owner Marcus Ferreira while serving in the British Army. Together they were part of the Army modern pentathlon squad, which competed at a regional, national and international level. This required five disciplines which in turn put their bodies through a lot of intense training. They had access to an osteopath while doing this, which

sparked an interest in both men. Marcus was the first to leave to pursue osteopathic training and 16 years later Paul followed in his footsteps. He trained and qualified in osteopathy and worked privately and within the British National Health Service (NHS). Looking to improve their quality of life, Paul and his wife decided to emigrate to New Zealand. With a choice of where to settle in the South Island, the couple chose Blenheim. “We were attracted by the climate, lifestyle and job offer to work with Marcus at Marlborough Osteopathic Services Ltd.” The profile of the business and reputation built by Marcus meant the business had a strong customer base and its services were suited to all ages and a range of complaints, he says. With Paul’s sporting background he is able to treat many sporting related injuries, or can refer patients on if the injury requires further investigation or a different approach to treatment. Marlborough Osteopathic Services Ltd welcomes new clients to make contact for a consultation which will look at not only the pain area, but what led to cause the complaint.

Kobie Madsen-Clark, 2, enjoying himself at the second round of the Bikefit CX Marlborough 2014 series on Sunday. Kobie was one of about 90 riders at the event at Queen Charlotte College.

Trip just the start for Tiana By Adam Poulopoulos A Marlborough Girls' College year 10 student is hoping her football trip to Australia will be followed by more of the same. Tiana Williams, 14, (pictured) was selected for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Girls' Under-16 team which travelled to Sydney during the recent school break. Tiana, who is affiliated with Mainland Football, was the only Marlborough representative in the squad, and one of only four from the South Island. While there, the squad played four matches against different New South Wales Institute sides, registering one win, a draw and two losses. Tiana said she enjoyed the experience. "Just playing with all the girls was really cool. "We all bonded really well. One of the girls said if even one of us wasn't here it wouldn't have been the same." Tiana, a central midfielder, said she was struck by how fast the game was played. She said learning a new system, playing on the right side of a midfield diamond rather than in a flat midfield like in MGC's First XI, was also a learning curve. "It definitely showed how much fitness you need to have. "Normally when I play here we have wingers to cover the wings, so I found that quite hard." The trip's purpose was to establish playing connections

between those likely to make up New Zealand's under-17 Women's World Cup squad for the 2016 tournament in Jordan. "I want to make the under 17s, and a lot of them play under-20s as well," Tiana said. She said getting a scholarship to play in America or Spain was another aim for later in her career. Before that happens, Tiana hopes to be part of the Mainland Pride ASB Women's League squad for the upcoming season.

GYMNASTICS Marlborough gymnast Anna Tempero is under an injury cloud and is unsure whether she will be able to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The 19-year-old picked up a knee infection just before leaving for Glasgow, which became worse while on the plane. She is hoping to be recovered sufficiently for the start of the artistic gymnastics programme early next week.

Craig heads to Glasgow By Adam Poulopoulos Marlborough Sportsperson of the Year Megan Craig (pictured) left for Glasgow and the Commonwealth Games on Friday, but did not know much about her first opponent. Craig has been training and trying to find out about her Kenyan challenger, Safina Madhani, ahead of their match on Friday morning, New Zealand time. She said she was in the dark about her opponent. “I haven’t seen her name at all before. There aren’t a lot of Kenyans out there on the circuit, so I’m not quite sure what to expect.” The 16th seed in the draw, Craig gets to skip straight into the round of 32 at the event. If she gets through Craig will likely face top seed, Malaysian Nicol David, in the next round.

Sport

“I’ve only ever played her in doubles in Malaysia, but never in singles,” she said. “I’ll learn lots I’m guessing.” Craig will also play in the women’s doubles with partner Kylie Lindsay. Craig flew out on Friday after lunch with her father’s family, and a lot of messages of support. “I’ve had people pop in who wouldn’t normally,” she said. “Everyone kind of knows it’s different from other trips.” On leaving she said there was a lot of other aspects of the experience she was looking forward to. “The opening ceremony, and I’m pretty excited for the food court. I love food.” She said she was looking forward to meeting the other Kiwi athletes, particularly shot putter Valerie Adams. You can watch Megan’s opening match on Sky Sport.

Moto Trials coming to Blenheim By Adam Poulopoulos Some of New Zealand's best riders will be in Blenheim later this month for the South Island Moto Trials Championships. The meet is being held at Leov's Property, on Barracks Road in Omaka Valley, on July 26 and 27. Riding begins at 10am on both days. About 30 riders, including some from the North Island, will be making the trip for the event. The weekend will be rounds three and four of six in the championship. Marlborough will have a contingent of at least five riders at the event, including Jason Baker, a multiple-time South Island champion, and 14-year-old Gareth Wadsworth,

David Atwool, Gareth Wadsworth and John Mortimer will be part of Marlborough’s group at the meet.

who won the under-16 junior category last year. Moto Trials is more about skill and balance than speed, as riders navigate a series of obstacles rather than race each other. Points are given when the

rider touches the ground with their feet or falls off their bike, and the rider with the least points wins. David Atwool, who will ride in the clubman division, said spectators would have the chance to witness something a

bit different. "They'll get to see some spectacular riding, particularly from the top classes. "They'll get to see some of the best riders in New Zealand, and something a bit different they may not have seen before." He said he hoped more young people would take up the sport. "It is the cheapest motorsport because there's not as much wear and tear on the bikes. "A lot of motocross riders train on trials bikes to start with, and they provide a good skill base for any motorsport." Entry for spectators will be free, but the farm owner requests dogs are not bought onto the property. The last two championship rounds will be held in Christchurch in September.

The Magnum volleyball team has stayed top of the Fairweathers’ Senior Winter League. They beat Wolf Pack by three sets to nil last Thursday to maintain first place in the premier grade standings after three rounds. Magnum was always going to be hard to beat but Wolf Pack came to the party with Harrison Kilgour and Toby Hogg both pulling off some good spikes, while Toby also played very well on defence. Jack Wheeler had a big spiking game for Magnum and Alister McKenzie set the ball up well for his team mates. Other teams to win in the premier grade were Pickle-o-Plenty, Uso 4 Life and Cri Clovers. The next round is tomorrow night at Stadium 2000.

Peter Ray take gold... L

ocal home builders are helping to put Blenheim on the real estate map, taking out prestigious gold awards in the Registered Master Builders 2013 House of the Year competition. Rowan and Donna Lee from Peter Ray Homes took gold in the New Homes $250k-300k category for a unique property they built for local couple Tim and Anna Gifford. The Lees proved they are a force to be reckoned with by also securing a bronze award for New Homes between $350k-400k. Rowan Lee said Marlborough builders had done extremely well in the nation’s top building competition, considering the high calibre of entries. Donna Lee with Tim & Anna Gifford.

lenheim couple Tracy Taylor and Peter Sutherland had a firm idea of how they wanted their home built, so they were pleased when Peter Ray Homes worked closely with them to deliver what they wanted. “This was the first time Peter and I had built together so we had a big list of ‘must haves’ and wanted to be involved in every stage of the build. “Rowan met with us regularly, sometimes in the evenings and went over everything in detail. He took us through showhomes to see how our ideas would look and when our build started he encouraged us to visit the site. “When we did the tradesmen would put down their tools to show us around and

outhlanders Judy and Trevor Grey moved to Blenheim early 2012 to be close to family. Judy says moving to Blenheim and building their first home was beyond their wildest dream for these retirees. “We looked at showhomes in Invercargill, but didn’t see the right plan for us. So Trevor decided to draw our own plans. “We contacted Rowan at Peter Ray Homes. He drew the plans to the right specs, and presto we had our plans back in three days and made the decision to go with it. “The reason other plans didn’t feel right was because of the unusual shape of our section in Blenheim. “Now house and section complement each other. Judy says the entire process was easy. Judy has previously worked for a kitchen consultant, so

etirees Judith and Allan Hutton weren’t considering building a new home, until they looked at an established Peter Ray Home built some years ago. They liked the home, says Judith, especially the living areas, but it was a bedroom short. So they decided to phone Peter Ray Homes. They spoke with Donna Lee. Donna owns Peter Ray Homes with her husband Rowan. Right from their very first meeting with Donna everything went smoothly. The thought of building was easy because her husband Allan was a builder, although “he was going to watch every nail,” she joked. There was no need to worry. Donna and Rowan had

she was particular about the kitchen. But there were no hassles. “The subbies that worked on our house were excellent and we had no problems. We visited most days while they built our home and we felt welcomed. Both Judy and Trevor agree building a new house with Peter Ray Homes is excellent value for money. They built a 4 bedroom home 235sq and they are very happy with the finished product. “It’s easy” says Judy. They also installed solar power water heating. Trevor cannot understand why more homes in Blenheim haven’t considered this option when building, with the amount of sunshine hours we have here. It is so very cost effective when building and saves on the power bill.

talk us through everything, so throughout there were no surprises, everything was done to how we wanted it to be,” Tracy said. Rowan told Tracy and Peter the build would take approximately five months, and it did! “Rowan and his team worked day, night and even weekends to have our home built on time. Everyone who was involved was clearly dedicated to their craft,” Peter said. “People ask us what would we change... to which we reply - nothing! “The trust for Rowan and Peter Ray Homes was there from the start and the whole experience was stressfree and fun,” Tracy said.

everything under control. Allan says today Peter Ray Homes have the buying power and it is so cost effective to build, without compromising on quality. Donna said it would take 16 weeks to build, and that’s exactly how long it took. A plus building with Peter Ray was the helpful advice received from interior designer Simone Hill. “She was extremly efficient and matched our furniture with the new house colours.” Allan commented they had very good builders and being a builder he knows. “The end result, we were totally satisfied Peter Ray did an excellent build for us. We have already recommended Peter Ray homes to friends. We were very pleased.”
