Alistair sails into Olympic team

By Adam Poulopoulos A Marlborough Boys’ College student is heading to China this month as part of the New Zealand Youth Olympics team.

Alistair Gifford, 15, is one of three sailors off to Nanjing for the games, from August 16-28.

The year 10 student, who sails at the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club, will be sailing in the boys’ dinghy, an individual event, in the 15 and 16-year-old age group.

The sailing programme begins at Lake Jinniu on August 18, with finals scheduled for August 23 and 24.

The Spring Creek local said he is excited to be selected for New Zealand.

Close shave for Tahu

By Adam Poulopoulos A Blenheim student has had his blonde locks shaved off, and all for a good cause.

Tahu-Colin Carrick, 9, a year 4 pupil at Redwoodtown School, went under the clippers at Beyond the Fringe hair salon yesterday morning.

Tahu-Colin’s mother Crystal Port said he had been growing his hair for between three and four years in anticipation.

“Tahu’s had open-heart surgery and he wanted to give back to another organisation.

“He’s had a lot of family members die of cancer.

“It’s good. I’m proud of him.”

Tahu headed off to school after the shave.

He’s pretty good,” he said.

“We’re friends off the water but rivals on it.”

He said he was looking forward to staying in the purpose-built athletes’ village, and eating at the 24 hour dining hall.

Long-term, he said sailing was his focus.

“If I could do it, Olympic sailing would be the best job I can think of.”

Alistair flew out yesterday, and is expecting to return immediately after the Olympics finishes.

Scallops die in botched seeding attempt A botched attempt at seeding scallops in Tory Channel in the Marlborough Sounds is a reminder why all undersized fish and shellfish people catch must be returned to the sea immediately.

Ministry for Primary Industries was tipped off on Friday about hundreds of dead undersized scallops in Te Awaiti Bay in Tory Channel.

MPI district compliance manager Ian Bright said the scallops were all under the 90 millimetre minimum size, in about 10 feet of water, and were all dead.

“It looks like someone has had a go at seeding scallops in what they believe is an easy place to harvest them.

“They have moved the shellfish a long way from their natural habitat and put them in a place where scallops do not grow, among weed. It wasn’t very well thought out, so they were always going to die, and it is a

waste of a resource that people really value.

“While this activity was wasteful, it is also illegal. Any undersized fish or shellfish that is caught must be returned to the sea immediately, as close to area where it was caught as possible.

“If MPI compliance officers had caught someone with hundreds of undersized scallops on their boat, for any reason, they would have found themselves in court facing serious fisheries charges.”

The daily recreational bag limit for scallops is 50 per person for the Challenger Fisheries Management Area, which includes the Marlborough Sounds.

Driving on with Dashwood project

FARMING EVENT

Work on the Dashwood Overbridge and Realignment project, north of Seddon, is continuing to schedule.

The new tunnel has been built and covered, and work at the tunnel portals is set to be completed over the next week.

Currently, earthworks are continuing at the northern end of the site, and kerb and channel work will soon start in locations where stormwater is collected off road surfaces.

The road base will be constructed this summer.

The project is expected to be finished by Easter next year.

The New Zealand Transport

Agency gave the green light to the project, arranging to build a wider overbridge up to current earthquake standards.

A wider, less windy road is also being built to join up with the overbridge.

Work on the project began late last year.

The $6.8 million project is the biggest roading project in Marlborough since the Awatere Bridge replacement in 2007.

Development gets green light

By Adam Poulopoulos The Marlborough District Council is pressing ahead with the redevelopment of the CBD riverside precinct, as negotiations continue with building owners in the area.

Councillors unanimously agreed to carry on with purchase negotiations for buildings on High and Wynen Streets at a meeting last Thursday.

Council has bought sites at 13 High Street, which was formally occupied by PC Media, and 9-13 High Street, which is leased by Warehouse Stationery.

Council spokesperson Jamie Lyall said discussions were continuing with Liquorland, at 7 High Street, and PGG Wrightson, at 46 Wynen Street.

The proposal suggests the precinct will have a library, information hub and art gallery at its core.

Discussions about public green space, markets and a showcase for Rangitane’s Wairau Bar treasures have also begun.

Mayor Alistair Sowman said it was still early on in discussions.

“Councillors support the overall concept and, once the parameters of the overall site are settled, we will begin the planning and consultation process to see what can be achieved here.”

He said project would be competed over several years, and would not be completed at the expense of other priorities, such as flood damage and earthquake strengthening work.

The motorcyclist suffered leg injuries, but has since been discharged.

Marlborough goes dry Marlburians raised over $7000 for those living with cancer during the Dry July fundraiser last month.

Sixty-two from the region abstained from alcohol for the month, raising $7115.69 for those living with cancer.

Funds raised will be donated to three beneficiaries – the Auckland Region and Northland Hospitals, Canterbury Regional Cancer and Haematology Service and the Wellington Blood and Cancer Centre.

Bands bring a touch of jazz

By Adam Poulopoulos The 12th edition of the Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival was a success, according to its organiser.

Twenty-two bands from 14 schools around the South Island played at venues around Marlborough last week.

About 500 spectators turned out for the gala concert at Marlborough Boys’ College on Saturday night.

Marlborough 4 Fun chief executive Katrina Lange said she was delighted with the turnout.

“All of the venues were so busy. We probably had thousands of people across four days.

“A lot of people have said it was the best festival we have done yet.”

She said the festival provided a chance for the musicians to expand their horizons.

“Public performances are really different for the students. They’re used to playing in front of a school hall.

Pruners celebrated

By Adam Poulopoulos Almost 200 competitors from around the region took part in the Marlborough Silver Secateurs Pruning Competition on Sunday.

The event, held at the Yealands vineyard in Grovetown, was returning after a oneyear hiatus.

About 180 competed in six different events, including 27 teams of three in the Farmlands Open Team event.

Wine Marlborough representative Marcus Pickens said it was a great way of celebrating those in the wine industry who did not get much recognition.

“The rationale for bringing it back was to make sure we celebrated the vital job these people do.

“It’s an under-appreciated part of the industry.”

Mr Pickens said he was happy with how the event unfolded.

Knitting up a storm

By Adam Poulopoulos A group of Marlborough volunteer knitters are hard at work, preparing to send care packages to Eastern Europe next month.

The group of about 50 has been knitting scarves, blankets, jerseys and more, with their creations going to help those in need in the European winter environment, where temperatures can drop as low as 20 degrees below zero.

Their work is part of Operation Cover Up, a national initiative under the Mission without Borders umbrella.

Marlborough coordinator Ruth Buckley said the project, which

started in 2000, is going towards a good cause.

“There are some large families and some of the areas are completely destitute.

“I want to thank the community for their marvellous contribution for yet another year.”

The knitting will be exhibited at St Christopher’s Church in Redwoodtown on August 22 and 23.

Elsa Cresswell was presented with flowers at the club’s Friday meeting last week.

Elsa helps organise the entertainment and the ‘taxi service’ for the group.

She said she has been volunteering for the last 22 years.

“A friend of mine needed help, and I’d just retired after selling my business.”

Ms Cresswell said she would continue to be involved.

“As long as I’m useful, I’ll be here.”

Jemima honoured by school and peers Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk When you ask the friends of 12-yearold Jemima Pavey what makes her a great friend and leader, they instantly reply; “She is always nice, supportive and there for you when you’re feeling down”.

Jemima, a student at Renwick School, recently received the Sir Peter Blake Young Leader Award at a surprise presentation during assembly.

The award is given out to one promising student in primary and intermediate schools across New Zealand, recognising them as young leaders.

“It was a complete surprise when they called out my name, I was really nervous going up to accept the award but very happy I won it,” she said.

Friend and classmate Hannah Wilson said when the award was announced she guessed it would go to Jemima.

“We were waiting for the name to be called out and I told Jemima it would be her. She didn’t believe me, but anyone who knows Jemima would have picked her as well,” she said.

Jemima is what her peers describe as a natural leader,” said teacher Jeanette

Lammas.

“Jemima is a cheerful, outgoing student who has stepped into the senior leadership role very easily, showing a true ‘give it a go’ attitude.

“She is organised, reliable and can be depended on to help others whenever they need it. In fact, she really enjoys helping others and does this very effectively through her role as one of our playground mediators,” Mrs Lammas said.

Jemima is also the leader in the Health and Hospitality Committee, a Renwick School council member, she participates in road patrol most years, is a mediator captain and plays basketball, tennis and represents Renwick in netball.

“She is a huge asset to the council and to Renwick School,” Mrs Lammas said.

In addition she is a very bubbly and kind student, adds another friend Lucrezia Bradley.

“She is always telling people to never give up. She is an inspiration and very deserving,” she said.

Jemima received a certificate, a medal, book and socks.

Speed limits changed The Marlborough District Council has changed the speed limits on roads leading to the Grovetown Lagoon and the Wairau Rowing Club.

The limit has been reduced to 70 kilometres an hour, down from 100

km/h.

The limit will apply to Grantham Street, Steam Wharf Road and part of Elliot St. The new limits come into effect on September 7.

School at what cost?

Dear Ed, I arrived in Marlborough in 1963, just after the Ferry Terminal was built.

I was here when the old Library was condemed as unfit.

It went empty for years and suddenly it was okay and now is an Art Gallery.

Next building was the Plunket rooms and there were many submissions to keep it.

But no, and then it was part of the Borough Council building.

They also pulled down the stately Post Office so they could have a crowded new Post Office.

I can't remember the St James

Theatre.

They also pulled down the Centennial Hall for the Countdown buildings.

Then of course the Workermens club, great parking, good food, dancing and good fellowship.

Still it was left empty for years, they pulled it down for just a car park.

Also the hospital was renewed.

Do we want two outstanding schools pulled down when just 2.5 million will bring them safe.

Please don't act foolishly as it will be the youth who will inherit the debt.

Dear Ed, At the Taylor Reserve near the Monro Street entrance, by a park bench, I came across some two dozen “Flame” beer bottles tossed in a heap, with some broken.

While it’s assumption to some degree, the probability is it was some moronic teenagers, possibly underage, just boozing.

Yes get angry at these idiots but really they are a product of the society that has evolved from a succession of mediocre often destructive, politicians all starting with Rogernomics in 1984 and through, Ruthenasia Bolger, Birch etc.

We even knighted or damed some.

I suggest damned would be better!

A good start for our Council (with police able to enforce it) would be hefty instant fines for littering and some policing.

She made the world her oyster Intrepid world traveller Deb Henderson talks to Glenise Dreaver about finding a way to the life of her dreams When Deb Henderson of Picton decided to feed her appetite for travel and adventure a decade ago, she had to find a way to pay for it.

She did that very successfully, for the last ten years spending as much as nine months a year working in and travelling from the United Kingdom. (More about that later.)

What that has taught her, on her travels alone to some very remote parts of the world, has been to expect the unexpected.

One of her most unexpected moments came in the tropical jungle of Guyana in South America.

“I went down the Burro Burro river with an Amerindian couple in a dugout canoe to a remote jungle camp. On the way we caught piranhas for our entree at dinner time.”

The entree was duly cooked over a jungle fire – and enjoyed. “Delicious.”

But there was neither smell nor sign of the main course and, wondered Deb: “How on earth are they going to follow up after a piranha entree?”

Then, in the distance, she saw a light wobbling through the jungle. “ I hadn’t noticed the track. The light got nearer and nearer and there he was. A guy on a bicycle delivering our dinner in a basket on the front of his bike! And I thought we were as far away from civilisation as you could get!”

Eastern Europe is one of her favourite destinations, with Slovenia her most special.

“I’ve been five times. In a way, it’s very like New Zealand. And the people are just great. It has such an interesting history too, with many changes of sovereignty in the last hundred years.”

In 2004 Deb, then 47, took stock. “I’d always wanted to travel, have adventure, and decided I just had to find a way to do it.”

The way turned out to be putting her name down with an employment agency in the UK that provides live-in home help.

“It proved an ideal solution. They trained you, and then selected what they believed was a good match of people, said Deb. The live-in jobs provide free accommodation and meals – and the pay is good. “All you earn is your own. And that meant I could travel.”

Her first job proved a big challenge.

“It was with a titled English lady, just before Christmas, with the whole family arriving for Christmas Day. I found myself cooking a

huge turkey – which I’d never done. On a coal range Aga, which I’d never used. And with no temperature gauge.”

She prepared what she could the day before and everything went well.

It’s that sort of adaptability that makes Kiwis popular with employment agencies in Britain she says.

She worked with many interesting people, not all rich and famous (though some were).

One older woman, the widow of a prominent UK politician, who had lived on a barge on the Seine, told Deb about her travelling days.

Through Scots, she had travelled by joining the Hitler Youth Movement which gave her access to Youth Hostels around the world.

Deb went three times to the Channel Islands to find that a client in Jersey had been there in wartime, during the German occupation.

“They were starving there. And the British just wouldn’t help them.”

The list of places she has travelled ranges from her first trip to Easter Island and Peru to Eastern Turkey, Morocco, multiple trips to Europe and two to South America.

There is unfinished business – she hasn’t been to Africa. Yet. (Ethiopia is next.)

But for the moment, Picton is the place to resettle, she says, though she wants others to have her opportunities, so is recruiting for the firm which has employed her for years.

“I will be advertising for interested people.

You need to be eligible for a work visa and having a clear driver’s licence, preferably one that lets you drive a manual car. I’ll help with organising police checks, visas and other documentation and preparing people for the experience.”

Some of the training has to be done in the UK. “They like to see you face to face and get a feel for what the best match with their client will be.”

More positions tend to be available over the December-February, when permanent helpers want to take several weeks leave, she says The amount of assistance required in a job varies.

“It’s often more about keeping the household functioning.”

The colder months can be worrying for parents when their baby suffers a blocked nose from a cough or cold.

As babies prefer breathing through their nose, it is important to help keep it clear, especially when they are feeding or sleeping as when they struggle to breathe they can often feel uncomfortable and restless.

Your baby is also too young to be able to blow their own nose so here are some tips to help ease cold symptoms so you and your child can rest a little easier.

1. Try slightly elevating the head of the bed by placing a pillow underneath the top of the mattress.

The slight incline makes blood flow away from the head, reducing inflammation of the nasal passages.

2. Encourage your child to drink plenty of fluids, such as water, breast milk or formula.

This will help loosen congestion and make sure your child doesn’t get dehydrated, which will make them feel more uncomfortable.

3. An approved infant vapour rub may help your baby.

You can apply it to your child’s chest and back, but make sure you don’t put any in or around their nostrils, as it can restrict breathing and cause irritation.

4. Use an infant saline spray or nasal drops to help loosen congestion

There are many things you can do to make a baby suffering from a cold feel more comfortable.

It also moisturises the dry nasal passage that can be the result of a cold.

Ultramarathon back again

By Adam Poulopoulos Entries are open and preparations are continuing for this year’s Queen Charlotte Ultramarathon.

The event is taking place on Saturday, November 8.

The run takes in the entire 71 kilometre length of the Queen Charlotte Track, from Ship Cove to Anakiwa.

Unofficial organiser Martyn Crossley started the event in 2011, as a way to prepare for the Kepler Challenge.

He said he encouraged experienced trail runners to compete.

“It’s really just a group of like-minded people getting together and sharing a run through the Queen Charlotte Track.

The only fee for the race is the money paid to Beachcomber Fun Cruises, who ferry competitors from Picton to the start

All runners are required to carry any food or water they require.

This is the fourth running of the race. In the past it has attracted people from places like England and Canada to compete.

Last year 30 people competed in the race.

Crossley said he was hoping for more people this year.

“It’s a great thing to do in Marlborough.

It certainly fills the accommodation at Anakiwa and Marlborough’s reasonably easy to get to.

“If you’re running the track you get a lot of varied scenery in one day, and that is one of the most appealing things.”

Craig returns from Games

By Adam Poulopoulos Megan Craig (pictured) is back in Blenheim after her Commonwealth Games campaign, and is already planning for the Gold Coast in four years’ time.

Craig, New Zealand’s secondranked squash player, played in both the singles and doubles events in Glasgow.

She said after a short break, she had resumed training in preparation for 2018.

“It’s just weird it was my goal for so long and now it’s all over.

“They had a big thing about the Gold Coast at the end and it made me want to go back.”

In the singles draw, Craig made the last 16 before being knocked out by

world number one Nicol David.

“I thought I’d be really nervous but I loved it,” she said.

“My coach said I wouldn’t get better experience than playing the world number one, on the glass court, in front of so many people.”

As if once was not enough, Craig played David again in the doubles draw.

She said she and team mate Kylie Lindsay came close to upsetting David and her Malaysian compatriot Low Wee Wern, who is ranked sixth in the world.

“We won the first set and we had match ball at 10-all in the second.

“They got a really lucky one – the ball hit the nick at the back of the court and went up the wall.

“It would have been a big win for us.”

Off the court, Craig did not have much time to explore, as squash was the only event which ran for the entire duration of the games.

“I did go and see the semis of the netball, when we won 35-34,” she said.

“I don’t know much about netball, so I wasn’t sure if it was good or bad, but everyone was pretty excited!”

Craig’s next assignment is the National Squash Championships on the North Shore next week.

AMELIA, QUINN, MAKE TEAM Marlborough squash players Amelia Wadsworth and Quinn Udy have been selected to represent New Zealand Secondary Schools in Australia later this month.

Quinn has made the senior boys’ team, while Amelia is in the junior girls’ squad.

They leave this weekend to compete against the best Australian secondary schools players.

HARRIERS The Marlborough Harriers have a pack run leaving from the clubrooms at 6pm tomorrow night.

Reflector gear is compulsory. Joggers and walkers regardless of ability are welcome. Everyone is welcome to participate.

VOLLEYBALL Young volleyballers in the area are being encouraged to attend a volleyball academy.

The academy starts on Thursday, August 21, and runs for six weeks.

The muster is being held on Monday at Stadium 2000.

The $30 subs and permission slip registration must be bought to the muster.

Pick up a form from your school office or Nicky Bain at Marlborough Volleyball.

RUGBY The Tasman Makos open their ITM Cup campaign against Hawke’s Bay at Lansdowne Park this weekend.

Kick-off is on Sunday at 4:30pm.

The match is a repeat of last year’s championship final.

Commonwealth games Renwick School’s new entrant students enjoyed a round of ball skills during the school’s Commonwealth games day on Friday.
