Story by Celeste Lodewyk Marlborough woman Pam Thomlinson has spoken out against motorists who blatantly ignore or fail to recognise the 20km/h speed limit when passing a stationary school bus that has stopped to let children on or off.

“This has to be one of the most unknown rules because not many people obey it which really annoys me.

“It’s not just in the rural areas we need to be more aware, but in towns and on main roads as well,” Pam said.

“A child could be seriously injured - or killed” Continued from page 1.

A Police spokesperson told the Sun there had been no fatalities, serious or minor injuries in recent years in Marlborough, but Pam said if the 20km/h rule is continually ignored something serious could happen.

“It’s not a frequent event where a child is injured or killed, but do we really want to wait until one is before the message gets through to motorists,” she said.

Pam has called for a greater public awareness and through her role as Rural Women New Zealand national councillor for the Top of the South, she is backing the push for flashing 20km signs to be fitted on all school buses.

The New Zealand Transport Agency is now considering installing these signs on all school buses next year.

Rural Women NZ has long been

campaigning for flashing 20km signs to be installed into school buses, something that has been successfully trailed in Ashburton over the past year.

The trial saw thirty school buses fitted with illuminated flashing 20km/h signs that activated by the door open-

ing and closing, and stayed activated for 20 seconds after the bus pulled away.

“These lights alert drivers that a bus is stopping and of the need to slow to 20km/h.

“Rural Women NZ is strongly push-

ing for these signs to be installed in all school buses nationwide, including Marlborough,” Pam said.

It has been estimated that each flashing sign would cost $2000 per bus to be installed front and back, and the results of the Ashburton trial are being submitted to the NZTA. “Rural Women NZ hopes the 20km signs will be approved for use next year, if not sooner,” she said.

A spokesperson for NZTA said; “We are encouraged by the initial results of the trial we have seen, which are promising.

“The trial has also been supported by a public awareness campaign and it has had considerable community support. Pending review of the final report, the trial signs are likely to be considered as an option for all school buses next year.”

Writer seeks war stories

By Adam Poulopoulos A Wellington writer is hoping her trip to Blenheim helps uncover more stories about the participation of New Zealand women in World War One. Jane Tolerton is speaking at the Blenheim Library on Friday night, beginning at 7:30pm.

She said her talk will be based around illustrations and audio taken to write her book ‘An Awfully Big Adventure: New Zealand World War One veterans tell their stories,’ which was published last year.

“People love hearing the voices of those old guys. They’re kind of like the forgotten voice really.”

She said she hoped her talk would double as collection for the book she is currently working on, which focuses on Kiwi women’s participation in the Great War. “The material I want is in people’s homes.

“I always say ‘it’s in a cardboard box on the spare bed.”

Ms Tolerton wants to write the book from a first-person point-of-view, so would welcome any accounts, including

Jane Tolerton. diaries, letters, memoirs, journals and photographs.

She said her research had already uncovered unexpected stories, including -Kiwi women taken as prisoners-of-war in Serbia, and nurses who died in the sinking of the Marquette in the Aegean Sea. “If you’d asked me a year ago, I wouldn’t have thought I could make a book out of it.

“We look and see nurses and soldiers, and we don’t see those other women.”

Ms Tolerton expects her new book will be released in 2017.

Marlborough Search and Rescue, represented by Terry Stevens, Shaun Crabb and Russell Montgomery, was one of the support agencies represented at the Event 365 ‘Moving on Celebrations’ in Seddon on Saturday.

The event at the Seddon Domain was held to mark one year since the magnitude 6.6 earthquake, which was centred in the region.

About 200 people turned out for

the event.

Organiser Marie Flowerday said the agencies were grateful to raise awareness for their work.

“They really enjoyed the fact they were out there and showing people what they do.

“They were even talking about doing something quite similar in Blenheim.”

Big Lotto wins

H2 oh no. The Picton bus shelter has sparked outrage within the community.

Angry over a-pour-ling shelter

By Adam Poulopoulos It is a case of water under the shelter, not the bridge, for Picton bus passengers.

Almost a year after the design was chosen by the Marlborough District Council, residents are still upset, saying their rates were spent to build a bus shelter that doesn’t do its job.

The structure, at the I-site on Auckland Street, has been drenching passengers with water since it was completed in January.

The shelter has a sloped glass roof which, when it rains, dumps water on both those

Picton resident Kurt Trixl said he had resorted to using shelter opposite the ferry terminal whenever possible.

“The structure was built to shelter people from the weather, but I guess the draftsman who designed it just didn’t know any better.

“That’s the stupidity of the whole thing. We spend all that money and it doesn’t work.

“If you want to alter it you’ll probably have to get rid of the roof and put something else on it.”

The shelter was installed at the same time

a more conventional bus shelter was placed further along the foreshore.

“That one does its job,” Mr Trixl said.

“It shelters people and it cost a lot less.”

The bus shelters cost a combined $219,500 to complete.

Despite all the opposition, residents will be seeing the shelter for a while yet.

Council support services manager Dean Heiford said there were no plans to replace or alter the shelter.

Proposed carnival progressing

By Celeste Lodewyk Community support for the proposed Picton Summer Carnival is growing by the day, and organiser Glenn Howard is planning to meet with business groups to further explore the idea.

Glenn launched his initiative earlier this month, going public with his intentions of reintroducing the carnival which was last held in the 1970’s, for a proposed date of 2016.

“Anything that will bring people together for our town and

community is a fabulous idea.

“Having the carnival and the festival as separate events, but running into one another could work well and I am looking forward to getting in contact with Glenn to discuss it further,” she said.

Glenn has been in touch with Motueka based company Sturgeon Amusements to check the availability of the carnival rides, and is currently organising a venue to hold a public meeting which people are encouraged to attend and share their feedback.

Snowman on Alabama On Sunday two Blenheim families went in search of fun in the snow and ended up bringing back a ute load to build a snowman on Alabama Road.

Alice and Adam Le Brun, along with friends Aimee and Tristan Moore, created quite the spectacle when they built their ‘snowman on Alabama’.

Motorists, neighbours and people stopping to enjoy the snow themselves made the snow mission “a day that ended with so much enjoyment,” said Alice.

Canada trip ‘mindblowing’ Blenheim teenager attends international Girl Guide event

By Celeste Lodewyk Camping during a thunderstorm, visiting a ghost town and making friends from all over the world were just a few of the highlights from Amber Dickson’s recent trip to British Columbia.

The Marlborough Girls’ College year 11 student was one of four chosen to represent New Zealand Girl Guiding at an international jamboree last month, and for this once shy girl, the trip has been an “incredible” experience and confidence booster.

“It was the experience of a lifetime, I couldn’t think of anything better.

“Canada and the people I met were so amazing and I plan to share my experiences with others in the hope of inspiring them to do it themselves,” she said.

The jamboree, which had a total of 2700 Girl Guides attend, included one week in Vancouver visiting the tourist sights and staying with a host family before leaving for the jamboree, a seven day camp held at Enderby, a city in the Okanagan region.

There Amber enjoyed nature walks, the local farming culture, a visit to the 3 Valley Gap ghost town, karaoke, crafts and plenty of leadership-type activities.

“One event I won’t forget is when a big lightning and thunderstorm hit and we had to be evacuated for five hours because it was so severe.

“Reading the statistics, even though New Zealanders may not see church as relative to them, 80 per cent of them acknowledge there’s a spiritual dimension in life.

“They may put it on the backburner. What’s relative is getting food on the table - the here-andnow.”

Wairau Youth and Family Trust community children’s worker Robin Humphreys said people of all ages were welcome to attend.

“We’ll try and make it relevant to where people are in life.

“This might be a place where people can seek answers.”

Swine flu has caused deaths Community advised to get immunised The most common flu strain circulating New Zealand this year, the Swine Flu, has caused deaths and seen people admitted to intensive care.

While in Marlborough no deaths have occured, in the May to July 2014 period, there have been four hospital admissions, two of which required an ICCU stay.

Dr David Bond associate medical officer said hospitals see respiratory illness as a result of a wide range of infectious agents every year, at about this time.

“It is important to note that in the figures provided pneumonia could be due to a virus other than influenza or could be bacterial,” he said.

Just dance After leaving New Zealand aged 14 to chase his dancing dream, Josh Guillemot-Rodgerson is back in the country performing and running workshops. He spoke to Adam Poulopoulos about his journey from Christchurch to New York, and everything in between.

Only 18 years old, Josh GuillemotRodgerson has been around the world and back again.

Born and schooled in Christchurch, Josh has spent many Christmases visiting family in Blenheim.

In the past he has performed in two ballet productions with the Marlborough Dance Centre, Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.

Now based in America, Josh returned to Blenheim recently, holding a series of dance workshops.

He also performed at the Floor Pride Civic Theatre, raising funds for his second year at the $25,000NZ-ayear Juilliard School, in New York City.

Originally a tap dancer, Josh said he began contemporary and ballet dancing at 13, and decided he wanted to make a career out of it.

He made the move to Interlochen Dance Academy, an arts boarding school in northwest Michigan.

He said he thought he would be homesick, but ended up relishing the three-year experience.

“I hated even going on school camps and sleepovers, so it was a huge leap for me. It made me grow up really fast.

“Everyone at school was passionate about the arts, and they were all away from home, so that helped.”

At the school, Josh met a people from all over the world, including a child pop star from Thailand and an African prince.

“It was pretty random. An assortment of people,” he said.

I made some lifelong friends, that’s for sure.”

He said the hardest moment was not the gruelling work schedule, which included both academic and dance training elements, but events at home during his first term.

“The big earthquake in Christchurch happened when I was gone, which was very scary.

“It was the longest 30 minutes not speaking to my family in my life.

“Relying on people I didn’t really know helped me to get through.”

After finishing the programme Josh applied for Juilliard, and he started in September last year.

There, Josh divides his time between contemporary and ballet dancing, training for about 10 hours a day.

Just to make it he had to complete a six-hour audition, incorporating five different categories, including choreography, learning abilities and a sit-down interview.

“It was crazy. We went as a big group from Interlochen,” he said.

“Everyone auditions to say they’ve tried out for Juilliard, and it was

pretty emotional seeing good friends cut.

“The dance world’s very picky.

Each year Juilliard looks for something different to keep the variety.”

Two months later he said he got the acceptance call.

“At no point was I expecting it.

Upon getting the phone call I was surprised, but extremely excited!”

He said while making the grade at the prestigious school was the realisation of a lifelong dream, the hectic schedule had left him little time to explore.

“I only really make the walk down to city level on the weekends.

“I still feel like a tourist.”

He counts Sarah Jessica Parker, Will Smith and a handful of Broadway stars as celebrities he had spotted.

“I’m aiming to see a couple more this year,” he said.

Long-term, he said he hopes to finish the four-year Juilliard program and continue performing.

“That’s what I’m most passionate about.

“Once I finish there I’d like to find another avenue in my field, like teaching or choreographing.”

He returns to the Big Apple in two weeks’ time.

Rescue Ride Bikers raising funds for Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter

by Celeste Lodewyk This Saturday there will be a roaring of motorcycle engines as the Marlborough branch of the Ulysses Club hits the road for their ‘Rescue Ride’.

The Rescue Ride is a fundraising ride in aid of the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust, which provides an air rescue service throughout the Nelson, Tasman, Marlborough and Buller regions.

Spokesperson Murray Brooks said the club hoped the public would support the Rescue Ride by going along to the Waterlea Racecourse at noon where over 100 motorcyclists will converge.

“We plan to have a barbecue going and will be accepting

“We have never fundraised for the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust before and thought it would be nice

to help them out, so we hope to make it a successful day,” he said.

The Ulysses will be meeting at the Havelock Marina at 10am where they will be

selling badges before leaving at 11am and convoying to the racecourse.

Murray said the Armed Forces motorcycle group, the Patriots, were also hoping to join in, making it a great event for anyone interested in going along.

“We encourage anyone wanting to join the Ulysses to come along and meet our members.”

The Ulysses welcomes members over the age of 40. You don’t have to have a motorcycle to join, but must have an interest.

The club rides every Sunday while the midweek group, the ‘Retreads’, meets every Thursday in addition to Sundays.

Multicultural group launches new website The Marlborough Multicultural Group has launched a website that can be accessed directly or via any search engine.

The MMG president Stuart Greif expressed his heartfelt thanks to Liz Valk of Valk Designs for producing a "splendid looking piece of work".

The website which was launched nearly two months

ago, has really taken off with businesses and individuals making donations that are recorded on the Donors' page.

The MMG is a registered charity and all donations are tax deductible.

Stuart emphasised that the website's goal is not revenue but rather to lift the profile of the group of unpaid volunteers.

Pak’n shoplift

At 5.35pm a 20-year-old female French vineyard worker and her 18 year old male French associate were caught shoplifting at PAK'nSAVE. They had taken a variety of pick'n'mix items and endeavoured to leave the store.

They appeared in the Blenheim District Court on Monday.

Drunken forklift driver

At 10pm a 25-year-old forklift operator was arrested on Kinross Street for driving his vehicle in a manner to cause a sustained loss of traction. He was also processed for drink driving when he was found to have a breath alcohol reading of 532 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.

His vehicle was impounded for 28 days.

SATURDAY 16TH Doorman assaulted

At 1.55pm a 49-year-old male security officer was arrested for assaulting the doorman at Paddy Barry’s. He appeared in the Blenheim District Court on Monday.

At 2.50pm a 14-year-old male was arrested for shoplifting at Hallensteins. He has been referred to the Blenheim Youth Section

An elderly resident in Renwick has been targeted by someone short of firewood with a liking for fresh fruit and vegetables. The offender has been to the address a number of times and taken her firewood and vegetables from her garden.

Letterboxes targeted

Overnight on Saturday a letterbox was kicked off its mount on Gascoigne St. The victim also noted a number of other letter boxes were also targeted by the offender(s).

Offender unhinged Someone tried to unscrew the front door to gain entry to a Taylor Pass Rd house overnight on Sunday. They failed to remove the door.

By Adam Poulopoulos Two Marlborough Vintage Musseleers rugby players are packing their bags and heading to Argentina for the Golden Oldies World Rugby Festival.

Philip ‘Gibbo’ Gibbons and Steve ‘G-Man’ Garlick are heading to Argentina for the event, which is taking place in the coastal city of Mar del Plata from September 22 to 27.

Philip and Steve are part of the Mainland Kiwis team, who are based in Temuka.

Philip said he was looking forward to the experience.

“For us it’s going to be great to go and explore a completely new country.”

About 150 teams from 17 countries are taking part in the festival.

It is Philip’s sixth world festival,

games can vary, with players wearing different-coloured shorts to indicate their desired level of contact.

Philip said most teams adhered to the rules, but they sometimes got a bit fired up.

“In Edinburgh in 2008 we played a Russian team in our second game.

“All they wanted to do was smash a New Zealand team, and they did. They played like it was a test match.

“We still had a beer together after the game.”

The 42-strong Mainland Kiwis party, which includes partners, will head out on a ten-day South American tour before arriving in Mar del Plata.

Rowers start programme Six Blenheim-based rowers are among those on a new national talent development programme, aimed at helping more Kiwi athletes win on the world’s sporting stage.

The Pathway to Podium programme will provide support and guidance to about 350 emerging athletes and 150 coaches every year for up to three years.

The Top of the South programme has just got underway with the first intake attending a workshop on nutrition in Blenheim, one of a series on different subjects designed so they can perform to their potential.

The first intake includes six rowers currently training at the central regional performance centre in Blenheim. They include James McAnallen, Harrison Somerville, Ryan Wilson, O’Reilly, Mitch MacKenzieMol and Nadja Hyson.

Sport Tasman community sport advisor Terri Willcocks said the athletes who were

selected by their national sports body, were excited to be able to learn new skills.

“They are all really passionate about their sport and very committed to doing what needs to be done to be the best.’’

Over the next six months athletes and their coaches would receive advice on and help with such things as performance psychology, life as an athlete, training regimes, mental skills, strength and conditioning and individual goal-setting.

“The aim of the programme is to better prepare emerging regional athletes for the demands of being a high performance athlete in the future,” Ms Willcocks said.

She said a second intake of athletes from winter codes such as hockey and netball would be announced next month, with athletes on the programme for one to three years, before hopefully being picked up by High Performance Sport New Zealand.
