By Adam Poulopoulos A Marlborough Boys’ College student is getting the opportunity to drive the school’s “little red tractor” as part of his learning.

Matthew Marfell is one of nine senior students who are part of the school’s special needs work experience programme.

Matthew, who has been part of the programme for about 18 months, is responsible for helping mow the front field with the tractor, mowing other parts of the school and making sure rubbish bins are emptied.

Special needs unit coordinator Ann McNicholl said the programme gave the chance to get students into the community.

“It definitely gives them a sense of self-worth, doing something really worthwhile.

“Just being in a real work environment is such a confidence boost for them.

Ms McNicholl said the programme was beneficial

for both the students and employers.

“Our students have abilities in areas where they can be useful in different work environments.

“Every boy is different.

Each has different talents.”

Other MBC students are employed in businesses like Countdown, Think Water and Mitre 10.

Mega Café at Mitre 10 owner Anne Robinson has been working with MBC student Brad McLennan for the last four months.

Brad has learned skills like chopping food, clean-

ing up, and had helped with baking, and Ms Robinson said he had worked well.

“He’s improved by about 80 per cent. It’s been amazing.

“He’s learned to follow instructions and work by himself, which he couldn’t do at the start.

“He’s a great team member, and everyone enjoys him at the café.”

She said the scheme was a great way to get the students work experience.

“Hopefully they can come out with jobs at the end of it.”

Daffodil shortage

By Celeste Lodewyk An early daffodil bloom makes for a pretty landscape, but for volunteers out picking for the annual Daffodil Day fundraiser on August 29, it means there could be less to collect.

This is why the Marlborough Cancer Society and the 30 volunteer pickers are appealing for donations of the ‘Trumpet’ daffodils, and will be collecting them over three days, starting next Tuesday.

Anyone with bunches or even fields of daffodils can drop them off at bunching centres located at McKendry’s Car Corner and Mayfield Motors.

“If there are too many to bring in, volunteer pickers are more than happy to come and collect them,” said Marlborough Cancer Society fundraiser Zoe Gray.

Three new salmon farms approved Plan changes to enable three new salmon farms in the Marlborough Sounds were signed off on Monday by Conservation Minister Dr Nick Smith, at a function at the Marlborough District Council with Mayor Alistair Sowman and representatives from NZ King Salmon.

“These three new salmon will enable NZ King Salmon to grow its products from the current 6000 tonnes per year to 9000 tonnes per year in 2015 and 13,000 tonnes per year by 2033.

“These new farms will grow our GDP by $120 million per year, our exports by $50 million and employment by 150 new jobs,” Dr Smith says.

These three farms will take up about five hectares of surface water space out of a total area of over 100,000 hectares in the sounds.

The minister’s approval of Plan Change 24 is the final stage of the legal process following the application in 2011 by NZ King Salmon for a plan change, to make salmon farming a discretionary activity in eight locations.

The proposed plan change was referred to the Environmental Protection Authority Board of Inquiry that received 1272 submissions of which 722 opposed, 358 supported and 118 indicated mixed positions.

Law firms to merge Wain & Naysmith set to be second-largest Wain & Naysmith Lawyers and Crichton Loach Lawyers are set to join forces on October 1.

The Crichton Loach name will disappear, and the name of the merged firm will remain as Wain & Naysmith Lawyers.

The move will result in Crichton Loach vacating their fifth-floor offices in Rangitane House, and move into Wain & Naysmith’s premises in the historic Parsonage Chambers on High Street.

This move will see the merged firm become the second-largest law firm in Marlborough.

It will also have the biggest proportion of women in senior roles, with five of seven senior lawyers being female.

Airport extension progressing

By Adam Poulopoulos Work is continuing to schedule on the Woodbourne Airport expansion, with next March set as the projected finishing date.

Work on the $4 million project began on July 19.

Currently, rental car booths are being constructed as the first stage of the project.

Work on the baggage claim area will begin after the rental car booths are finished.

Marlborough District Council support services manager Dean Heiford said the project was on schedule, but the March finishing date was dependent on delays caused by, for example, weather.

Mr Heiford said drivers parking at the airport should remain

mindful of traffic congestion in front of the terminal, and limitations on parking.

He encouraged people to be picked up and dropped off if possible, and to park in long-term parking if they needed to.

During peak times assistance is being provided to direct vehicles around the car park as it fills up.

The airport is expanding to the south, with the interior being doubled in size. An extra gate is being added facing south, while several parts of the terminal, including the Air New Zealand desk and café, are being reorientated.

AMBULANCE BOOST Yesterday a $9.2 million boost to emergency ambulance services was announced, improving service response times, increasing the number of frontline paramedics and providing better tailored patient care.

Under the new funding model St John will be better able to provide better and faster-quality healthcare.

The new funding starts on December 1.

SUICIDE DECLINE Latest provisional figures from the chief coroner for the year ending 30 June 2014, show an encouraging decline in the number of deaths by suicide among young people aged between 15 and 24 years, with 110 suicides, compared with 144 last year.

The total number of suicides for the year 2013/14 was 529, a decrease of 12 from last year.

The number of suicides recorded in over-60-year-olds went up from 75 in 2012/13 to 97 in 2013/14.

A hub of community

She is a hairdresser who for years has worked from home – and her home has also been a hub for friends to meet and have a tea or coffee. It’s also where she indulged her love of craftwork, which she has sold or donated to organisations for sale.

Now, she’s taking that idea a step further. In her home at 111 High Street, Picton, she and two commercial partners have created The Health Hub. Lisa Lee, massage therapist and beauty therapist, and Sarah Arias, a UK-trained foot health practitioner, have both created havens for treatments in what was the Bugler family home.

New website for Phil Brown Motors

By Adam Poulopoulos Phil Brown Motors has launched a new website, to help customers make informed decisions.

The website, launched earlier this month, lists all the cars in the business’s lot.

Phil’s son Matt, who joined the Main Street business on August 4, designed the website.

He said it allowed customers to look at what was available before coming

COUNCIL NEWS Right to Demand a Poll on Electoral System

One year since the 2013 earthquakes

Notice is given under section 28(1) of the Local Electoral Act 2001, that electors of the Marlborough District Council have the right to demand a poll on the electoral system to be used at the next two triennial general elections (2016 and 2019) of the Marlborough District Council.

The choice is between the Single Transferable Vote (STV) and the First Past the Post (FPP) electoral systems. Unless a poll determines otherwise, the STV electoral system will continue to be used for the Marlborough District Council.

A valid demand for a poll must be: • Made in writing; • Signed by at least 5 percent of eligible electors of the Marlborough District Council. This will require a minimum of 1,596 elector signatures; and • Delivered to the office of the Marlborough District Council, 15 Seymour Street, Blenheim by 5pm 28 February 2015.

Every elector who signs a demand must also set out in it his or her full name and the address for which he or she is qualified as an elector of the Marlborough District Council.

Pay your parking ticket online!

You can now pay your parking infringement online with your credit card. Simply choose “Pay Online” from the Online Services list on the home page of the Marlborough District Council website to find out more and to access this service.

Parking and other infringements are the latest payment type to be enabled for online credit card payments, joining dog registration fees, and LIM and resource consent invoice payments.

Building, litter, navigation, camping, Resource Management Act and dog infringements can also be paid online.

Further payment types will be progressively rolled out.

Please note, payment by credit card is an online service only; Council cannot accept credit card payments over the counter or by phone.

Second-Hand Sunday Second-Hand Sunday is an experiment coming up next month to see whether this way of encouraging recycling will work for Blenheim.

Based on the premise that one person’s trash is another’s treasure, SecondHand Sunday is a one-off opportunity for households to place unwanted but still usable items at their gate so others may take them – at no cost.

It’s an opportunity to have a clear-out without the effort of loading up the trailer.

The concept works in other places but it has never been trialled in Blenheim until now.

Householders who put out goods are also responsible for removing them after the event – otherwise they will be at risk of breaching the dumping bylaws.

Anyone with materials still left at their gates after

the event is encouraged to either take them to a second-hand/charity shop or to the Re-Use Shop at the Resource Recovery Centre in Wither Road.

WHITEBAIT They say last year was a bad year for whitebaiting down the diversion. I wonder if the 25 sock nets that were in the river fishing from day one to the last day of the season had anything to do with it? While they all sat in their buses drinking coffee and tea.

PRODUCE ASSISTANT A few times when shopping at a local supermarket, I have noticed an older lady produce assistant consuming fruit while stocking produce shelves, if customers were to do this it would be theft by consumption, does the same rule apply to the staff, not the first time I have seen her do this, I am a regular shopper.

Four bars penalised

By Celeste Lodewyk The controlled purchase operation carried out by police in April has resulted in three local bars being penalised, while a fourth still awaits the result of an application to suspend its liquor licence.

Paddy Barrys Irish Bar, Fairweathers Bar and Biddy Kate’s Irish Bar were handed 24-hour closure notices, while Criterion Hotel owner Terry Sloan will have his manager’s certificate suspended for 28 days.

The fourth bar caught in the sting was Scotch Wine Bar which, police said, was the second time it had been caught.

According to police the volunteers enlisted are not dressed up to appear over 18 years old.

“The briefing they get is that they cannot wear a lot of makeup, they cannot make themselves look older than they are.

“A photograph is taken before the operation and if they are deemed to look too done up then it does not go ahead,” a police spokesperson told the Sun.

Plants stolen from church garden

By Adam Poulopoulos Members of a local church are frustrated after they had 30 plants stolen from their two-week-old garden.

Blenheim Baptist Church pastor Ernest Stevenson discovered the theft on Wednesday.

The plants only appeared on Saturday, August 9, by a group of church volunteers.

The project, which saw the stones and plants laid down to beautify the carpark area, began earlier this year.

The entire garden cost about $600 to put together.

The plants stolen included Leucadendrons, Hebes and Akeakes.

Pastor Stevenson said he was disappointed.

“I think it’s very sad, but it’s more frus-

“It’s frustrating people can help themselves in a public area we’ve put a lot of work into.

“It takes a lot of time to get some of these plants growing. A lot of them were grown on private property before being brought here.”

He said the theft would have occurred between 4pm on Tuesday, when the last pastor left the church, and noon on Wednesday, when he walked through the carpark for the first time.

Several plants were left untouched, and most of those taken were obscured from the road by the carpark’s front fence.

Volunteer Graham Nevill said he thought the thieves used the fence to stay hidden from the road.

Constable Andrew Holdaway said a bike was stolen from a property near the church at about the same time, and the two thefts were probably related.

He said in the 20 years the business had been in Mariners Mall, the main change he had noticed was a more touristic feel to the town.

This successful event is a major fundraiser for SPCA where individuals and businesses get involved to raise funds to fight animal cruelty in the community.

On Monday there will be cupcake sales sites outside Super Value Renwick, the Warehouse, Springlands Countdown, the Blenheim Post Office and the SPCA Op Shop on Grove Road.

There is also the chance to win a set of electronic scales donated by Breville for the ‘best decorated cupcake.’

By Adam Poulopoulos A photographer and designer new to Marlborough said it was the opportunity to move into a smaller community that inspired his move here.

Simon Greenwood arrived in Blenheim about a month ago, having most recently lived in Melbourne.

He has a background in photography, with past exhibitions in England and Spain, as well as design experience with banks, corporate entities, and in the wine and fashion industries.

He said he and wife Pam moved to Marlborough to escape the hustle-and-bustle of Melbourne.

“Being in Marlborough I hope to get in touch with the wine industry, because I have a fair background in doing that,” he said.

Tractor workshops

By Adam Poulopoulos Yealands Estate is looking to address a shortage of tractor drivers in Marlborough’s wine industry by offering workshops.

The sessions, which will be held every Saturday morning, will see six applicants spend a session with two trainers.

The first session is on September 6.

Each applicant will be taught the basics of driving the tractor, before having a half-hour practical course with one of the trainers.

Yealands Estate founder Peter Yealands said the programme was aimed at those graduating, or just about to graduate school.

“There’s a real shortage of skilled drivers because there aren’t enough coming on.

“We want to do the right thing – help ourselves and help them.”

At the end of the session applicants will be informed if they are asked back or not.

When to retire?

Softball Marlborough Softball’s muster day for the 2014-15 season is coming up.

The event is being held on Sunday, September 20 at 11am at A&P Park.

Half-marathon Hamish Hargest was the winner of the Woodbourne HalfMarathon last weekend in a time of one hour, 18 minutes and 38 seconds.

Annabelle Latz was the first woman home, in one hour, 25 minutes and 53 seconds.

About 330 runners competed across the grades.

Conrad Smith, Ma’a Nonu and Tony Woodcock are also in their 30s. None are the players they once were, as their games decline or change, but are they still the best in their positions?

There is no hard-and-fast rule relating to when a player should retire. A lot of them say “you just know when to give up” but we never see that.

It can go either way.

Ryan Giggs spent 23 years, more than half his life, playing in the Manchester United midfield.

He started as a flying left winger, and finished as a central midfielder.

He was still as fit at the end as he was at the start, although all of his pace was gone.

Martin Crowe decided to make a cricketing comeback in 2011, but it was ended after three balls when he got hurt.

These players are too good to let go – they just need to be handled properly.

Maybe Sam Cane should be playing with McCaw to compensate for his drop in pace.

Maybe Carter needs to be coming off the bench so he stays fresh.

We have the depth to get them fit and firing for next year.

Football The Marlborough Mariners development side lie fourth on the table with two rounds of their season to go.

They play Nelson College in Nelson this weekend.

Shooting Marlborough’s Bradley Palatchie was the top shooter as the South Island junior team beat their North Island counterparts last weekend.

The match was part of the Target Shooting New Zealand Inter-Island Match, held at Clubs of Marlborough.

While the South Island Juniors won their match, our open, veterans and women’s teams were all beaten.

MBC was beaten 25-23 by Nelson College in Nelson, bringing an end to their defence of the trophy.

Leading 13-8 at half-time, MBC was put under severe pressure. Trailing 25-13, they mounted a comeback, only to fall just short.

MBC coach Gray Cornelius said he was proud of the team’s fighting qualities.

“They were pretty disappointed and gutted to fall over, but they did well to battle back.

“Our goal was always to make the top four, and we nearly made the top two.”

The gap between MBC and Nelson has been small throughout the season. Nelson won both their meetings by a combined three points, after a last-minute try gave them a 17-16 round-robin win in Blenheim earlier in the season.

MBC had a tough run with injuries too. Captain Zac Harrison-Jones broke his leg,

Fenemor off to Hamilton

By Adam Poulopoulos Indoor bowler Janet Fenemor will represent Marlborough at the National Champion of Champions tournament next month.

Fenemor will play singles at the event, to be held in Hamilton on September 13.

Competitors play four games each, and require at least two wins and a draw to progress to the knockout rounds of the tournament.

Playing for Rapaura Indoor Bowls Club, Fenemor earned the right to play in Hamilton by winning the Marlborough title.

She last represented Marlborough at the tournament in 2011, held in Lower Hutt, and said she was aware of the magnitude of the task she was facing.

“Very few people manage to get to nationals, and with the knockout rounds it doesn’t offer you many chances.”

Earlier this month, Fenemor was part of the Marlborough side beaten 45-3 by the touring North Island team.

While the team was thrashed, Fenemor was the shining light.

She drew her singles match with 20-year-old Waikato star Teri Anderson, arguably the best women’s player in the country.

Marlborough Indoor Bowls publicity officer Eric Percy said if Fenemor played like she did against Anderson, she would do well in Hamilton.
