Over 500 growers converge for Bragato conference Geoff Thorpe, Nick Hoskins, Rochelle Brown and Janey Halliday of Riversun Nursery clink glasses at the Romeo Bragato Conference this week. The 20th annual edition of New Zealand’s largest wine conference concludes today at the Marlborough Convention Centre. It is the third successive year it has been held in Marlborough. About 500 grape growers, winemakers and trade representatives from around the country are attending the event. The theme for this year’s event is ‘new horizons,’ which was touched on in the Bragato address by Australian economist Kym Anderson. Themes of sustainability, advocacy and marketing were also addressed.

Kickboxer shares personal journey Continued from page 1. He said he wanted to pass on his passion. “If anyone sees it and takes it to the next level, it would have been a success.” Immersing himself in training and Thai culture, Boobyer learned to read and write, and lived on-site at a kickboxing gym. “I basically became a big white Thai,” he said. Last year, Boobyer won the World Muay Thai Federation Heavyweight Championship belt. A cruiserweight fighter at that stage, Boobyer only fought in the heavyweight

division as a favour to the promoter. He said the fight did not last long. “I knocked him out in 30 seconds. I thought I’d test him out a bit, and I did a head kick and knocked him out.” His arrangement turned sour when a leg infection prevented him from fighting, angering his gym manager. “I had an argument with him and he kicked me out of home,” he said. “Brayden offered me the job here and I decided to come.” His next fight is at the Knees of Fury 48 meet in Hamilton on October 11, where he will fight Israel Adesanya, a three-time New Zealand champion ranked 10th in

the world. He is fighting in the middleweight category there, so is looking to lose 11 kilograms in the next six weeks. Boobyer is hoping if he wins, he can get a regular place on the Knees of Fury circuit, which alternates monthly between New Zealand and Australia. Before the fight, Boobyer plans to head back to Thailand for three weeks to train. A charity dinner is being held at The Yard Bar on Monday night to help with his travel costs. To register for the dinner, or to book classes with Joe, ring 027 379 0000.

Yealands confirms land purchase at Clifford Bay KiwiRail sells land designated for port development KiwiRail has confirmed the sale of the land at Clifford Bay, owned by Clifford Bay Limited, to local winegrower Peter Yealands. The 413 hectare site was placed on the market earlier this year. Property, investment and revenue national manager Andrew Robinson said the sale price is a private matter between the parties involved.

“KiwiRail has a duty as a state-owned enterprise to operate commercially, and make a return on investment, and this sale fulfills those requirements.” The property was purchased in 1993 by Clifford Bay Limited. “The Government’s decision last year not to proceed with the development of a new terminal means the land is surplus to our

requirements, and therefore the most sensible option is for it be sold,” says Mr Robinson. Mr Yealands, the Yealands Estate founder, also owns the adjoining Flaxbourne Station, and says that he plans to upgrade both properties together. He said he had some “theoretical plans” for the site, but would not comment further. Mr Yealands gets possession of the property later in the year.

Ban the bags!

Linda Thompson wants plastic bags gone from Picton.

3

By Adam Poulopoulos A Picton woman’s trip to America earlier this year inspired her to start a crusade against plastic bags when she got home. Linda Thompson’s movement, ‘Plastic Bag Free Picton,’ aims to remove all plastic bags from the town. She said it was what she saw in Hawaii in March that motivated her to take a stand. “I was sitting in this monstrous food hall one day, and there was a man cleaning all the rubbish out of the big bins. “I was thinking ‘here I am on this beautiful small island. Where does all the rubbish go?” She said she saw parallels with New Zealand’s situation. “I feel like New Zealand’s a beautiful country but we’re wrecking it, so I thought ‘I’m going to go home and do something about it.’ “A person, on average, uses one plastic bag each day. That’s four million bags going into landfills or

oceans. “I’d love to do the whole country, but I have to start somewhere.” Linda has spoken to businesses around the area about taking plastic bags away, and said despite a positive response, the financial consequences had stopped many from acting. “They don’t think it’s cost-efficient, and that’s when I decided it’s up to us not to use them. “We’ve got to change our mindset.” She intends to speak to the Marlborough District Council in the near future about the issue. “What I’d like to see is a bylaw passed to force supermarkets to charge for bags. “From what I’ve read, a charge of 10 cents sees an instantaneous drop of 95 percent for plastic bag use.” A public meeting for the movement will be held at 7pm on Tuesday, September 2, at Dolphin Watch. The movement’s launch is on Friday, September 5, at Mariners Mall.

Associate Health Minister Jo Goodhew is encouraging those eligible for a free flu vaccine to get in quick, with the programme due to wrap up on August 31. The seasonal flu jab is free for people aged 65 years and over, pregnant women, people with long-term health conditions such as severe asthma, and children under five who have been hospitalised for a respiratory illness.

WETTER SEPTEMBER A large, slow-moving high has brought about several days of settled weather which is set to remain over the South Island until early next week. It has been described by MetService as one of the strongest seen this winter. Looking to September, at the start of the month the South Island keeps most of the dry weather and high pressure, and a wetter than usual September is forecast for Nelson and Marlborough.

New owners for Quilters Barn By Adam Poulopoulos The opportunity to tick something off their bucket list is what attracted The Quilter’s Barn’s new owners to the opportunity. Fiona Higgins and Venice Langrope took over ownership of the Vines Village store on July 1. Fiona said she could not pass up the chance when it came. “It was a dream come true to have a fabrics shop. “It’s not something I actually thought would happen, but it is always something I’ve wanted to do.”

The first two months have been busy for the pair, re arranging stock and learning the systems. They hope to construct the store’s new website in the next two weeks, and begin a store refit by the end of the year. Fiona is hoping to bring dressmaking into the store, while Venice, who was manager for two years before becoming co-owner, will be making use of her craftwork background. Motor still running The owner of Tasty Tours Marlborough is reassuring customers his service is still running, even if it takes an occasional hiatus. Graham Lindsay (pictured) runs his service on weekdays, driving Blenheim-based Queen Charlotte College students to school each morning . On the way back, he picks up people who want to head from Picton to Blenheim. Some customers became confused when the service stopped during the school holiday period, thinking it had finished for good. However, Mr Lindsay said the service only stops temporarily, during the holiday breaks. “We stop it then because without the regular student flow going to Queen Charlotte College there isn’t sufficient traffic to make it viable.” Mr Lindsay does the reverse service in the afternoon, taking Picton locals home and bringing QCC students back to Blenheim. He said his Picton clientele was varied. “Elderly people use it because they struggle driving, and sometimes people just use it to get from A to B. “In tourist season we get a helluva lot of backpackers using it too.” The bus is also available for charters at any time.

New Optometrist Joining the Barry Gainford Eyecare team is local optometrist Martyn Crossley. Martyn qualified as an optometrist from Glasgow Caledonian University and then undertook fellowship training at Gartnavel General Hospital, where he worked primarily as a senior optometrist in the contact lens clinic. He combined this with private practice in Dunblane & Bridge of Allan, Perthshire. Since arriving in Blenheim nine years ago, he has worked locally for a national company, and assisted with the glaucoma and children’s ophthalmology clinics at Wairau Hospital. He has also spent the last five years running the diabetic retinal screening programme along the West Coast of the South Island. Joining Barry Gainford Eyecare,

Martyn said, is an exciting opportunity. “Barry Gainford Eyecare has been established in Blenheim for 20 years and over that time Barry & Trudy have built up a wonderful practice. “Having the opportunity to join him in partnership offers a fantastic opportunity to continue to develop our range of services and products for the Marlborough community,” he said. Barry said Martyn brought with him a great combination of optometric skills and a caring attitude. “Going the extra mile has been such a hallmark of the way we treat our patients. Martyn and his wife Francesca, a deputy principal, and son Jacob have been involved in the local community affairs for many years, and to have a local optometrist join me in practice is a real bonus,” he said.

COUNCIL NEWS Right to Demand a Poll on Electoral System Notice is given under section 28(1) of the Local Electoral Act 2001, that electors of the Marlborough District Council have the right to demand a poll on the electoral system to be used at the next two triennial general elections (2016 and 2019) of the Marlborough District Council. The choice is between the Single Transferable Vote (STV) and the First Past the Post (FPP) electoral systems. Unless a poll determines otherwise, the STV electoral system will continue to be used for the Marlborough District Council. A valid demand for a poll must be: • Made in writing; • Signed by at least 5 percent of eligible electors of the Marlborough District Council. This will require a minimum of 1,596 elector signatures; and • Delivered to the office of the Marlborough District Council, 15 Seymour Street, Blenheim by 5pm 28 February 2015. Every elector who signs a demand must also set out in it his or her full name and the address for which he or she is qualified as an elector of the Marlborough District Council. For further information, please contact Dean Heiford or Mike Porter, Ph: (03) 520 7400.

Pool Inspections

Compliance with the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987

All pool owners have a responsibility to keep young children safe from drowning in swimming pools. All pools including spa pools must be registered with the Council and must comply with The Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987. Pool owners have the responsibility to maintain the safety of the pool at all times. The Council in turn has an obligation to inspect pools for compliance. The annual inspection notice will be sent out during September. At this time inspections will begin and will continue on a regular basis to ensure compliance is maintained. It is anticipated that all pools in the Marlborough region will be inspected in due course. The biggest area of non-compliance in pool fencing is the gate. Gate latches must be secure and have enough tension on the gate spring that gates self-close and latch firmly. Please check your fencing to make sure it works properly. Remember your pool is your responsibility. For more information check Council website: www.marlborough.govt.nz/Services/ Swimming-and-Spa-Pools If you have any queries please phone Council on 03 520 7400 attention Phil Eves or email phil.eves@marlborough.govt.nz

Taylor River public planting day The next event in the Taylor River Project is a planting day for schools on Tuesday, and members of the public are welcome to come and join in. Three schools – Redwoodtown, Whitney Street and Springlands – are including the Taylor River in their Enviroschools curriculum and they will be out planting next week under the guidance of Council’s Reserves department. Reserves Officer Robin Dunn says natives including flax, kowhai, coprosma and carex grass will be planted

alongside the river, giving children a chance to get their hands dirty while learning about biodiversity and how plants can help improve water quality. “It’s great to see kids connecting with the earth and hopefully getting inspired to plant things in their home garden as well,” says Robin. Public planting day, Tuesday 2 September 2014. Monro Street car park area – come along when it suits you between 10.30 am and 2.30 pm. All welcome. Postponed if wet.

– Entitlement to mobility parking permits

Parking spaces designated for people entitled to Mobility Parking Permits are available near public facilities and services throughout Blenheim. A vehicle must display an approved permit to park in these spaces. A fine of $150 may be imposed when a space is used without a permit. The permits are issued on the basis of mobility – not simply to anyone with a disability. A person unable to walk 200 metres without help is entitled to apply; this may include people suffering from an underlying medical condition not immediately obvious to others, such as multiple sclerosis or

If you have a permit and travel in different vehicles, it may be convenient to attach a small suction cap to the permit for easy display. RE: MOULDY SUPERMARKET FOOD Last year we shopped at a local supermarket, they had heaps of closed punnets of peaches, we had to pick through a lot of punnets to find one that didn’t have rotting fruit! As for meat? If you buy it on special then chances are you may find its going off on the underside so won’t be able to see it till its home. I’ve struck this a few times. My advice is to really look at the food before you put it in your trolly, happy shopping!!

To the staff at De Broods Bakery Moran Street, best pies in town, top quality so yummy, friendly staff, keep up the great work.

Live n let live, I say. There’s worse things going on in the world, why does such trivia matter to some folk? J

GREAT NEW SHOP

Hilarious. I agree with the three sensible texts last week explaining to this person the reasons why you don’t wear your PJ’s out. Scary that its not obvious to this person anyway.

Sheets and things new shop is great more room and great for parking.

WHITEBAIT Come on Doc its about time u banned sock nets in case a hector dolphin goes in one and drowns.

DON’T JUDGE To the reply of my txt to the government. I’m not an uneducated fool. There are a limited amount of over weight people around here, and I am announcing I may b 1 of them. How do u know that us overweight people don’t have health related problems. Because u don’t!! Go and discuss something that actually matters in this 1st world country.

GET FACTS CORRECT To the person moaning about diabetes and dialysis I have Type 1 diabetes and looking at getting dialysis soon my diabetes is not caused from being overweight or unhealthy living u should educate yourself on diabetes before mouthing off. Not all diabetes is caused from bad eating.

SEDDON WATER There are advantages and disadvantages when living out in the sticks. Advantages: More space, cheaper properties, cheaper rents. Disadvantages: Inadequate water supply and sewage. Thems the breaks. Hopalong Cassidy.

BAD TV Cannot believe how bad the television programs have become in NZ, Shortland Street, is now just as pathetic as Days of our Lives. Just about everything is a repeat, they cut that much out of movies, to make more time for advertising, it’s not worth watching!!! Paid TV, well they are ripping everybody off, by repeating everything, but seriously American programs, omg!!! No wonder they’ve got so many people with so many problems, won’t be long before it starts happening here, stop watching paid TV, or you might end up chasing bigfoot through the mountains, or wolfman, or warecat, hahaha.

GET IT RIGHT To the person who was referring to the PD workers, it’s CW these days... Community Work.

PJs or onesies those who don’t like need to get off ya high horse not everyone wants to wear suit n ties to supermarket again blenheim haven a go at the younger gen get over it. Is it really so much of a hassle that we have to put it in the paper. All I see is bitching and moaning. It is up to the individual what they wear to the supermarket and how they dress. Why not find something a bit more important to complain about. I’m gonna wear my pj’s to the supermarket all the time now. I am one that wear’s my pjs in the supermarket at night, judging someone by what they wear is more disrepecting than wearing your pjs out in public, you don’t know us, you don’t know weather or not we have jobs, We have self respect and we don’t care what others think. You are judging a book by it’s cover before you even know who we are, so next time you see us in our pjs inthe supermarket why dont you come up to us and get to know us instead of judging us. Wearing PJ’s to the supermarket doesnt necessarily mean people don’t have self respect towards themselves. In all honesty I see it as them being comfortable with who they are. PJ’s are a piece of clothing at least they aren’t walkig around half their butt showing like you see with young girls these days. People really need to be more open minded or mind their own business because honey we live in the 21st century not the 1800s

New Zealand born artist Maxine Thompson will be delivering a pastel techniques workshop in September. Photo provided.

Top pastel artist to present workshop When it comes to depicting people and animals in lifelike pictures, New Zealand-born artist and tutor Maxine Thompson is one of the best. Maxine has exhibited in many art shows and won a number of prizes and awards for her work. Her passion for drawing began in her teens when she drew commissioned portraits, but for a period of time she put her pencil down when she studied and took up legal work in England. Being her first love, Maxine would return to art on occasions, before taking up life as a full time artist in 1990. She went on to be named as master pastellist by the Pastel Society of Australia, and is called upon to give advice and critiques at it the Society’s meetings. Maxine will be bringing her skills to Marlborough on September 13 and 14 for her workshop ‘Pastel Techniques’ through the Marlborough Art Society. There students will receive one-on-one instruction as well as benefit from demonstrations with full explanations. “Any willing student can learn to draw from scratch. “Each exercise is demonstrated and explained so beginners can cope and experienced artists will be challenged to find the accuracy necessary in portraiture to reveal the character,” she said.

Shanghai to London Rally Noeline’s blog Leaving Perm for Kazan Friday 6th June 2014.

Leaving Kazan City. 7th June 2014

Up early – not a good sleep. I woke at 2am and it was quite light in the room. ‘Doesn’t it ever get dark in this country,’ I thought, as it was quite light. Ha! But no (a blonde moment.) To my surprise there were lights up high under a drop board from where the curtains are attached which I’d forgotten to turn off! Who puts lights up there?! Anyway, we packed the car with our clean dry laundry all ready to leave for Kazan. We headed through the city and the police were out on the roads at the many check points. This time they got the VW and the Daimler. Arriving in Kazan right in the middle of the 5 o’clock traffic with four lanes to contend with, four of us missed the turn off, so along with the Daimler and a few others we made a U-turn in the middle of this eight lane road. We managed it perfectly, making our way into the hotel underground car park and then up to the hotel bar for a well deserved beer while we waited for our room key.

8am start. Wes and Silvia along with the Daimler boys stayed back to get the Daimler fixed. We took the ‘tail-end-Charlie’ position with Ed in front with his Nissan Pathfinder which made it hard to see the cars up ahead. There were quite a few police on the road today - who will be next? It was an easy drive out of the lovely city this morning but the zebra crossings are a pain - not like the ones we have in NZ - just a small sign on either side of the road. We travel at a good speed then someone steps out and we all hit the brakes. Ron grabbed the hand brake, I grabbed the iPad, books and drink bottles, only to look up to see that we missed the car in front and the guy was just strolling across the road! We arrived in Nizhny Novgorod at 3:30pm, and after some time we finally got our room. Down to the lobby to have a few drinks with everybody then into a taxi to walk around the Kremlin. We had dinner in town out on the sidewalk with Nancy and Ron Mc, then walked up and down the mall stopping to listen to various people playing music. Some boys from NZ were playing!

Back down to the lobby at 6:30 for a walking tour to an ancient cathedral and several monasteries and mosques. The first ever McDonalds to be built in Russia was apparently here in this city. And apparently Ivan the Terrible built a castle for the love of his life who said, ‘If you build me a castle in seven days I will marry you.’ So that he did, but because it was built so quick it was built on a lean. They married, but after a short time she couldn’t stand him anymore and she climbed to the top of the tower and jumped off. The buildings and shops were lovely. When they renovate a building they put up a huge painted canvas of an apartment building which can be four stories high or more. After dinner we walked up the street by the Volga River to the fountains which were playing to music. As it was slowly getting dark the lights came on and it was very magical. By the way, Kazan was Ron’s favourite Russian city. It was simply beautiful with great buildings that had been preserved and the whole city was surrounded by lakes and water ways. A fantastic place to have that ‘White Xmas.’

An example of the beautiful architecture in Russia.

Leaving Nizhny Novgorod. 8th June 2014 We got on the road by 8am after a good breakfast. The second turn for the day was wrong, so by the time we got 13 cars sorted and heading in the right direction we were finally on our way. We passed a truck on its side, and Wes said the truck got tired so decided to stop to have a sleep! I thought that was funny - I must be tired! We crossed over into Moscow at 2pm - very hot at 28 degrees. Our make-shift fan on the dash was going full on. We arrived at the hotel in time to have a shower, then back down to the lobby and off to catch the Metro to go to the Moscow Circus. It was a typical circus at the beginning but did get a lot better in the second half. One of the clowns played the drums – it was awesome! The lady with the lions wasn’t that great. I think she thought she was in a fashion parade. Another actor changed into different outfits within seconds while on stage - our husbands wished we would only take that long to change. The acrobats were fantastic. We all had a great time.

The Volga River fountains out on a show at dusk.

Band hopes to rock out in Auckland By Adam Poulopoulos Picton band Pandamonium is looking to follow in the footsteps of Arm the Reckless and open at Smokefreerockquest’s national finals. The indie rock group, made up of four Queen Charlotte College students, won the people’s choice award at Marlborough’s regional finals in July. Now, they are competing against other bands from around the country for the public’s vote, and the right to open the national finals in Auckland in late September. The public can vote by text, and the window closes on September 15. If they win, Pandamonium will be the second Marlborough band in succession to open the national show, after former Marlborough Boys’ College band Arm the Reckless did so last year.

ATTENTION RENWICK HOME OWNERS!

Lead vocalist Zoya Timms said the band was hoping to tread the same path. “It’s a bit nerve-wracking, but we’ve got heaps of support from people. “It would be great to represent our school, and represent our region.” The band is sacrificing lunch hours and weekends to stay sharp should they win. Tarn Greenlaw, who alternates between the bass and the drums, said it would be a dream come true to reach nationals. “I’ve been doing Rockquest since year 9. It’s my final year of school, and it’d be really good to get there.” The band has set up a Facebook page with songs and photos. Smokefreerockquest is an annual national rock competition open to intermediate and high school bands.

The sun’s out and it’s warming up, which means our summer game is coming back. The sound of leather on willow, the smell of freshly mown grass, picnics on the boundary… And the Channel 9 commentary team. Earlier this week, it was reported ailing 83-year-old commentary doyen Richie Benaud may continue to call the game from his armchair at home, such is his knowledge of the game and appeal for Aussie cricket fans. Australia’s cricket commentators have become a bit of an institution, even in this country.

Archery The Vines Village is hosting archery lessons each Sunday from 2-4pm, starting on September 7. Hamish Beard from Dartington Barn will be taking the lessons. All ages are welcome.

Football The final round of the Marlborough club football season sees four cup finals being played on Saturday. Cup: Central Pirates v Blenheim Valley Masters. Shield: Rangers Masters v Rangers Hammers. Plate: Blenheim Valley United v Rangers United. Bowl: Clubs of Marlborough Rangers v Pumprite Hammers.

We only need look at the success of The Twelfth Man’s parody records for proof. From Bill Lawry’s “got’em yes” and love of all things Victorian, to Tony Greig’s pitch report’s and banter with Bill, you tuned in as much for the call as for the cricket. With Bill on the way out and Tony passed away, the new team hasn’t been able to quite live up to the halcyon days. Mark Taylor and Ian Chappell, both former Australian captains, provide insight but not as many classic one-liners, while Ian Healy and Michael Slater are both

The Marlborough Mariners development side were beaten 3-0 by Nelson College in their game last weekend. They play Richmond in Nelson tomorrow to close out their season.

Cycling The 2014 Cuddon South Island Secondary Schools’ Two Day Tour is in Blenheim this weekend. The event is open to secondary schools from around the South Island and Wellington. There are four stages over two days, including a time trial, criterium, hill time trial and road race. There are 12 Marlborough riders competing, and 130 overall.

No Crusaders game here Kieran Read, Richie McCaw and Daniel Carter will not be running out onto Lansdowne Park in Crusaders jerseys next season. T he Ta sm a n Rugby Union approached the Ma rlborough Dist r ict Council to gauge their interest on hosting a Super Rugby match in Blenheim in late May next year, but council declined the prospect, saying the associated costs posed too much risk to the ratepayer. Council came to the conclusion costs for the game would be about $200,000, which would have included accommodation and travel fees for the players, and

extra lighting to meet Super Rugby standards. Over 5000 portable seats, in short supply at that time due to the upcoming under-20 FIFA World Cup, would also have needed to be sourced. The costs would have meant council having to sell about 7000 tickets at $30 each just to break even. Council also decided the likely weather for late May would not encourage spectator turnout, after 2500 people turned out to watch the Tasman Makos’ win over Hawke’s Bay on a sunny afternoon earlier this month.

more Cyclops than commentator, they’re that one-eyed. Keeping Richie on is a great move, as he provides one of the final links to one of the great commentary teams. A good game caller always adds to the sporting experience. We may not let them into our homes physically, but we let their opinions and voices in. Fellow Australian Ray Warren is the undisputed voice of rugby league, while closer to home, Grant Nisbett has been calling the All Blacks for Sky for nearly 20 years. It’s going to feel strange when they all retire.

By Adam Poulopoulos A Seddon-raised multisport athlete is in Canada, preparing for the biggest race of her life. Jess Barnes (pictured) is with the New Zealand squad at the Triathlon World Championships in Edmonton. The 20-year-old is one of two Kiwis competing in the women’s sprint distance race, in the 20-24 year-old age group. Her race is early tomorrow morning our time. She said she was relishing the opportunity. “It is a great honour to wear the silver fern and represent New Zealand. It has been something I have dreamed about since starting the sport. “It is also cool to be travelling with the team and getting international training experience, and learning a lot.” She said she had been working hardest in the water. “My focus has been on swimming, as it is my weakest discipline. “Now we are over in Canada the training is just small bursts,
