Early votes cast Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk The first votes for the 2014 General Election were cast in Marlborough on Wednesday, as advance voting begins ahead of election day on September 20.

The first voting location to open was the Kaikoura Electorate Headquarters on the corner of Grove Road and Budge Street which saw an influx of voters through the doors within the first hour.

Twenty advance voting sites will be set up across Marlborough, 15 of which are mobile (in campervans) that will visit rural and the Sounds areas at specific times.

Top local talents

By Adam Poulopoulos The winners of the Marlborough’s Top Talent show said they were as surprised as anyone to be announced winners.

Ballet dancers Kelly Webster and Shiloh Walsh won the title at the grand final, held at the Floor Pride Civic Theatre on Saturday night.

The pair has only been dancing together since April, when they began rehearsing a dance routine for the Marlborough Dance Centre’s presentation of ‘The Nutcracker.’

Kelly and Shiloh were one of 11 acts to make it to the final, and performed the same four minute, 50 second routine as they did during the season in June.

Kelly said they chose to enter the competition because they wanted another chance to perform it, and they were surprised to hear their names read out.

“It was a bit of a shock more than anything. Quite often variety shows like this are won by singers, so it was quite a shock.

“Some of the singers were phenomenal, and all of the

finalists were very good.

“They lined us up on stage, and we didn’t think we had a chance, so we weren’t paying much attention.

Kelly said the routine was very challenging strengthwise.

“The first time we rehearsed it there was a lot of falling over.

“It took us about two hours to get through the first 30 seconds of the routine.”

Stadium to be strengthened

Experience gained from the Canterbury earthquakes has prompted the Marlborough District Council to begin strengthening the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 complex.

Councillors at Tuesday’s Assets and Services Committee meeting have agreed to a budget of up to $2M to cover the cost of the strengthening and underpinning from the council’s emergency disaster reserve.

Work to strengthen the main stadium stairway is already underway, with costs being met by the Marlborough Stadium Trust.

After that, work is required to underpin the foundations of the complex using a soil stabilisation process introduced to New Zealand in the wake of the Canterbury earthquakes.

Most of the work is due to happen this summer, but council is working with the Marlborough Stadium Trust to try and minimise disruption.

The stadium was designed and built in accordance with the building code of the late 1990s.

CRASH VICTIM CRITICAL A 49-year-old Christchurch man was taken to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition after a singlevehicle accident on Wednesday.

The man had been travelling north when his ute left the road and rolled off the bank, between Seddon and Blenheim.

The incident happened at about 8am.

The man suffered serious head injuries, and was treated by paramedics before being flown out.

Stop-go signs were put in place immediately following the incident.

A serious crash investigation is under way to establish the cause.

Earthquake strengthening on Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 has begun.

the Canterbury quakes prompted council to get specialist engineers to assess the building and to conduct a geotechnical review of the soils beneath its foundations.

Mayor Alistair Sowman said given its classification as an important community building, where large numbers of people may be gathered, it is important to

investigate risk reduction options.

“It does not fall into the category of a potentially earthquake-prone building, but our geotechnical investigations, coupled with our knowledge of Blenheim’s geology, suggest that liquefaction could be an issue at this site if there was a prolonged and severe shake.

“We think it’s prudent to

strengthen some of the building connections in case that should ever occur.

“It is important the public understand Marlborough is located in the two highest earthquake risk categories of New Zealand, and a number of fault lines pass through the region.”

Flood risk to be reviewed before Renwick expands Further investigation into the impact of possible flooding of Gibsons Creek is being recommended before residential expansion intensifies north of Renwick.

A block of 57 hectares of land north of Renwick is earmarked for large-lot residential use in the region’s long-term urban growth strategy.

Council environmental policy manager Pere Hawes said more research into flood protection should be done before the land

is re-zoned.

“The growth strategy is a plan designed to address land needs for a 25-year period, and it’s going to be a gradual process to ensure all the necessary services and infrastructure is in place.”

While any landowners can apply for resource consent if they wish to subdivide, a key constraint is likely to be flood risk, especially for low-lying land.

Council rivers and drainage engineering manager Geoff Dick

said recent analysis suggests water flow into Gibsons Creek during a big storm has the potential to be higher than previously assessed.

“The likelihood of a big flood had been estimated as a one-in50-year event, but latest thinking is the risk may be greater than that, given also that stormwater flow into the creek may increase with growth in the Renwick township.

“We don’t see it as an issue for

existing houses, as those built recently have minimum floor levels set as a consent condition, and older houses tend to have been built on the higher ground, above flood levels.”

Although some work had been done to upgrade the channel of Gibsons Creek in the last decade, Mr Dick said he could not be confident there was sufficient capacity to give the preferred level of flood protection for a built-up area.

The Marlborough District Council’s Regional Planning and Development Committee has approved changes to regulations regarding the use of frost fans.

The fans will now have to be shown to comply with noise regulations enforced by council.

The changes were mooted after a series of complaints were lodged in 2010.

The changes come into effect on September 25.

ALLEGED GUNMAN HAS LOCAL LINKS Russell Tully, the man who was arrested by police in connection with the Work and Income shooting in Ashburton, has links to Marlborough.

Mr Tully was last seen in Picton a month ago, after returning from Perth, where he was working in the mines.

Tully appeared in court in Christchurch on Wednesday.

Café closing The Argosy Restaurant Bar and Cafe, on Middle Renwick Road, is closing later this month.

The café’s final day is Sunday, September 21.

Old ANZ building The old ANZ Bank building, at 68 Queen Street, is set to become a pharmacy.

Nelson company Prices 7 Day Pharmacy will be moving into the building.

They expect to move in the next six to eight weeks, as the building is currently being refitted.

Four awards for Marlborough Four Marlborough wineries won prizes at the Romeo Bragato Conference last week.

Wither Hills, Bladen, Saint Clair and Starborough all picked up awards, for best riesling, gewürztraminer, dessert wine and sauvignon blanc respectively.

Old Air NZ building The old Air New Zealand building, at 29 Queen Street, remains empty, but commercial real estate manager Sid Doecke says there are “a couple of parties” interested in the site.

She said it was early days in the process.

Air New Zealand moved to Maxwell Road in June after 66 years on Queen Street.

Forage group Expressions of interest for a forage group are now open.

The group will meet at least every two months.

Supported by an independent consultant, participating farmers will share and promote successful methods and information.

Pom Pom hangs up clown shoes

By Adam Poulopoulos Sandra McNeilly, aka Pom Pom the clown, said a “light bulb moment” was the cause of her sudden retirement decision.

Sandra has packed her bag of magic tricks after 15 years entertaining Marlburians as Pom Pom. She will continue her job as a music teacher, teaching students the ukulele, piano and guitar.

Sandra said a variety of factors had contributed to her decision.

“It just came to me very suddenly, lying in bed before I got up one day.

“There are a lot of reasons but the main one was that I damaged a tendon a year ago.

“Pom Pom started as a hobby that turned into a business, and it’s sad to let go – it’s like a divorce really.

“On the other hand I feel like the time is right.”

She said the amount of work required, in relation to the amount of money earned, made it difficult to continue in her condition.

Despite 2014 being a “quieter year,” Sandra had enjoyed her time in the suit.

“I’ve been able to meet a lot of fantastic families and gone to so many fantastic places.

“I’ve performed down in the Sounds, and done things in Nelson, Wellington and Kaikoura.

“It’s the best job when you have the energy to do it.”

In July Sandra announced a new venture, a show with Rikki the puppet, educating schoolchildren about the danger palm oil cultivation poses to orangutans.

She said none of 25 childhood education centres she visited in Blenheim had been interested in the idea, but there were interested parties in Wellington.

She said it was likely the puppet would be sold on.

New start for Campbell’s Upholstery

By Adam Poulopoulos After more than 30 years in the Blenheim upholstery business, Julian Campbell is packing up and leaving town.

Julian is heading to live in Brisbane to be closer to his children, and leaves at the end of the month.

He leaves behind his John Street business, Campbell’s Upholstery Services, and his tutoring position at REAP Marlborough.

Campbell’s Upholstery will continue on under new owner Suresh Prasad.

Julian said the move came after a long planning process.

“I wanted to be near them (my children.) It’s been two years in the making.

“I’ve been run off my feet with people saying ‘can you get this done before you go?”

Suresh moved to Marlborough from Fiji about six years ago.

His wife and four children are all settled in New Zealand, with his eldest daughter recently making the move.

Suresh has come to the business from Marlborough Motor Trimmers, and has skills in car trimming, boat work, canvas work and joinery.

Julian said the business was in safe hands.

“I think the Blenheim community will be well-serviced by Suresh’s skills.”

The Marlborough District Council has made all of its Resource Management Act documents available online through the launch of its E-Plan.

The E-Plan allows anyone to search any council planning documents, or look for information about a particular property.

The E-Plan, on the council’s website, enables anyone to search for any property, bring up an aerial view and view any property-specific information, such as the resource management plan zoning, rules that apply to that property and any other matters like heritage or hazard issues.

The Marlborough District Council is the second council in the country to release its RMA plans in a digital format.

Council environmental planning manager Pere Hawes said it’s an efficiency improvement for planners

and consultants who use the plans to make resource consent applications on behalf of clients, but it can also be used by anyone who lives, works or conducts business in Marlborough.

“It not only makes the resource management plans more accessible, it will also make the plans more relevant.

“The ability to search plan content by property means property owners and others can instantly access information on the relevant zone and zone rules.”

He said the E-Plan will make it easier to carry out research on planning requirements on matters which are everyday inquiries to Council – from building close to a boundary or drilling a new well, to checking what rules will apply if intending to set up a new business.

COUNCIL NEWS Notices Register now for Second-Hand Sunday Second Hand Sunday is coming up at the end of this month – it’s a chance to see whether this recycling opportunity will work for Blenheim.

Based on the premise that one person’s trash is another’s treasure, Second Hand Sunday is a one-off opportunity for households to place unwanted but still usable items at their gate so others may take them – at no cost. Have a clear-out without the effort of loading up the trailer!

Householders who wish to take part may register their address so it is included in the advertising. Register before 5.00 pm Wednesday 24 September on the council website at www.marlborough.govt.nz or via email at mdc@marlborough.govt.nz or by phoning the Council on Ph: 03 520 7400.

Householders who put out goods are also responsible for removing them after the event – otherwise they will be at risk of breaching the dumping bylaws.

Anyone with materials still left at their gates after the event is encouraged to either take them to a second-hand/charity shop or to the Re-Use Shop at the Resource Recovery Centre in Wither Road.

Keeping our residents satisfied Council’s residents like what we’re doing and, overall, they’re pretty happy with the way we deliver, according to this year’s survey of Marlborough residents.

Council uses a professional research firm to check up on its performance each year; 800 people are questioned in a telephone survey with results that have a margin of error of less than 5%.

Overall, the service areas delivered by Council in terms of sewerage (7.93), emergency management (7.82) and drinking water (7.82) came out on top.

Individual services ranked most highly were the public libraries (8.47), the parks and reserves (8.29) and the rural fire-fighting service

(8.10).

Overall performance of the Council has been rising gradually but consistently each year; in 2010 it was

70.5% and this year it sits at 82.3%.

Asked to list priorities, residents said the most important work of Council was providing drinking water supply, emergency management, community safety, flood protection and control and sewerage services.

Council does this survey each year to help keep tabs on how residents feel about Council services and whether councillors are setting the right priorities for spending decisions.

Information about Council meetings In our Customer Service Survey, about 70% of those surveyed could remember seeing or hearing information about Council’s activities in the media or by way of Council’s own publications.

However, one thing people said they wanted to know more about was ‘information on Council meetings’.

A special plea to dog owners – please don’t drop full doggy-do bags into the recycling bins.

Just lately bags of dog excrement have been appearing in the kerbside bins near the dog walking routes. We don’t think our collection teams should be expected to handle this waste.

Please put doggy-do bags in public rubbish bins or take it home with you and dispose of it there.

Positive Ageing Unlocked cars are an easy target for thieves. Sometimes cars are broken into but more often items are stolen from unlocked cars.

Handbags or briefcases, laptop computers, MP3 players or cellphones left in the car will attract thieves and they will also steal GPS devices, hands-free phone kits and car stereo gear.

Some people said they felt the public was not aware of the meetings and didn’t feel locals knew what went on at Council meetings.

A huge part of Council’s work is maintaining the basic infrastructure of the region. In Blenheim, parts of the town stormwater system date back about 80 years and Council is beginning to replace it. For the last few weeks our contractors have been working in Muller Road, renewing 340 metres of pipeline – a half-million-dollar project. It’s a big job with large diameter pipes as this section of the stormwater system drains the area right out to Burleigh, taking in the area around Maxwell Road and Howick Road.

There has been quite a bit of traffic disruption due to the scale of the works and we thank residents and drivers for their patience. Weather allowing, the work is due to be complete by the end of September.

RE: TO THE GOVERNMENT Nothing is more important than the health of our children! Maybe you are happy being overweight, while your parents feed you lollies and powerade.

When you are older and obese, possibly with type 2 diabetes, heart disease and unable to keep up with you own children, you will see things differently.

To the Government 15 Aug issue of the Sun. I have followed the responses with interest, agreeing with the 1st response on 22 Aug. Parents play a very important role in setting up their childs palate for later life. Whats happening to eating a piece of orange at half time! Powerade is extremely high (and other sports drinks) in added sugar. Sugar is addictive & can add to carrying extra weight, rotton teeth & diabetes. Being over weight can add other health related problems. Often unhealthy foods are used as a reward, & the food industry also has a huge impact by targeting different age groups, not always for our good, but to get our dollar.

In response to Get Facts Correct in 29 issue, I didn’t feel the response, Reply: To The Govt, was saying that all persons with diabetes are over weight or unhealthy living, but they were acknowledging that NZ does have an obesity prob (which can cause diabetes) epidemic & this places a huge strain on our health system. 1 in 3 adults are obese, with another third over weight...(on 24 Aug, Re - think on channel 3, covered this very topic,which was very informative).

THE WHITEBAITERS AT THE DIVERSION I walk my dog there every day all year round. A whitebaiter in a caravan accosted me the other morning telling me I was “arrogant” for allowing my dog to swim by his net. I told him that this area is not a camping ground and we are allowed access to the river. He suggested I walk my dog elsewhere. I suggested he whitebait elsewhere. I am there 2 min.

He has his net in the water all day while sipping tea in his caravan. Go figure. Do these people not know that they are not allowed to block access to the river? and we wonder why our whitebait stocks are dwindling? They camp there for three months rent free and make money selling their catch at exorbitant prices. Our rates pay for the upkeep of these reserves, and we get abused for using them?

Since when does religion hav anything to do with swearing? My daughter has been sworn at and called names. It happens in many teams through the grades. Just ask the 8 year older who swore at an umpire.

Oh and she went to a state school. Get real!

Walking the walk

By Adam Poulopoulos An Invercargill freezing worker hopes his walk around New Zealand’s coastline will inspire kids not to give up on their dreams.

Craig Hoffman came through Blenheim on Tuesday, speaking at Riverlands School during the process.

Craig had the idea after his two applications to join the army were rejected due to three drink-driving charges and an assault charge.

He completed a six-week Limited Service Volunteer course, a motivational and training programme run by the Defence Force, and finished top of his class.

He said that convinced him to continue following his ambition.

“I didn’t really want to give up what I wanted to do. I thought ‘what can they do to look at me differently?’

“So I decided to go for a walk.”

He said he wouldn’t have seen myself doing this a couple of years ago.

“I’m trying to inspire kids not to give up when they’re told no.”

Craig, carrying a 34-kilogram pack and accompanied by dog Sancho, started his walk from Bluff 80 days ago, and plans to reach Cape Reinga at about Christmas before returning to work.

He said the scenery and the public’s generosity were what had stuck out for him.

“It’s been eye-opening what society has been like.

“The amount of strangers saying hello on the side of the road, and people opening their doors to let me have a shower, has been amazing.”

The walk is also raising money for the Bluff Coastguard, with about $800 having been raised so far.

Craig headed up to Picton yesterday, with the North Island his next destination.

Officials prepare to tell story

By Adam Poulopoulos Work is continuing on the construction of the Marlborough Story, with a tentative launch date of Marlborough Anniversary Weekend set.

The story will be a resource, containing print, audio and audio-visual material, which tells the story of the Marlborough region.

The initiative follows in the footsteps of similar projects like the New Zealand Story and Grow Wellington.

Mayor Alistair Sowman said the project was significant for the region.

“I think it’s extremely important Marlborough tells its unique story. We haven’t to date, and other regions are doing a similar thing.

“If you look at the New Zealand Story and Grow Wellington, there are still videos that need to be made, and other material put together.

“The date is dependent on whether we get the work done before then.”

The story will contain an overarching theme, but also tools that cater to specific businesses.

Mr Sowman said the story would make Marlborough more accessible to non New Zealanders.

“I think the biggest complaint when local products get sold overseas is people don’t know about Marlborough or what makes it special.”

Workshop aimed at creative marketing

By Celeste Lodewyk Marketing is an important part of operating a business or promoting an event, such as an art exhibition, so to help you is a workshop titled ‘Marketing for Artists’.

The workshop is being run through the Marlborough Art Society by Richmondbased woman Glenys Della

Bosca.

Glenys is the owner of Impressions, an art supplies retail store which has been servicing the art community in the Top-of-the-South for over 30 years.

In this time Glenys has met many artists she said were struggling with their marketing, so she has created

a workshop aimed at helping them with their goals.

“Marketing is a creative process, but for many businesses and artists it can be an area they are lacking in.

“So I have designed a workshop based on things I have learned from marketing experts as well as taking my own experience selling my

art products, and created something that would appeal to a wide range of artists,” she said.

The workshop will be run in Blenheim’s Yealands Estate Marlborough Gallery on Saturday, September 20, and has 15 spaces available.

It will look at the artist, define who they are and what

they produce and end with setting a plan, objectives and identify their target market.

This workshop was successfully run last year and received great feedback.

Working smart

By Adam Poulopoulos Three i-SITE staff members are looking forward to putting the skills they learned during their study into practice.

Amy Chandler, Chloe Bell and Annette Tanabose have all recently completed courses through ServiceIQ, the industry training organisation for tourism.

A my, who m a nages t he Blenheim and Picton i-SITEs, completed a First Line Management course, while Chloe and Annette, customer service travel consultants at the Picton branch, finished level four travel and tourism courses.

The trio get recognised at the Marlborough industry graduation, which is being held tomorrow from 5-7pm at the Floor Pride Civic Theatre.

Annette said the study would help them in office situations.

“It helps us a lot with the work we do with customers.

“For example, with everyone who comes in, you have to be able to adjust. Some people don’t speak English, so sometimes you have to use writing or actions to get your message across.”

Amy said the practical courses would help them in the office, and with job prospects down the line.

“For me, with the manager qualifications, I could put things into practice while doing the course, and look back at the books if I needed to.

“It (the i-SITE) is a place to harbour them, put them in training, and then most people go out and get other tourism jobs.”

Although the trio had worked in their current jobs for four years or more, there were no plans to move on yet.

“It’s a beautiful place to live in.

It’s an easy job to be passionate about,” Chloe said.

“I’ve been here seven years and I still love it,” Annette added.

Population growth fastest in decade New Zealand’s population is growing at its fastest rate for over a decade, according to Statistics New Zealand.

The country’s population grew by 67,800 people, or 1.5 percent, in the year to 30 June 2014.

This came from natural increase (births minus deaths) of 29,500 and net migration (arrivals minus departures) of 38,300.

New Zealand’s estimated resident population was 4.51 million at 30 June 2014.

The estimates are the best available indication of how many people currently live in New Zealand because they

include people missed by the census, including those who were temporarily overseas on census night.

The estimates confirm increases in all ethnic populations since 2006. Even the broad European ethnic population has grown to 3.31 million despite its older age structure.

The June 2013 estimates put the Maori ethnic population at 692,000, the broad Asian population at 541,000, and broad Pacific population at 344,000. An estimated 53,000 people identify with Middle Eastern, Latin American, or African ethnicities.

Young and old combine for music’s sake

By Adam Poulopoulos Youngsters have been joined by more experienced musicians in the new Marlborough Youth Orchestra The orchestra has their first concert at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church from 7pm, the first under their new name since changing from the Marlborough Youth Orchestra.

The youth orchestra was losing members, so was opened up to adults.

Interest was gauged at events like the Summer Strings Concert earlier in the year, and now, the orchestra has 36 members ranging from primary school students to an 87-year-old.

Orchestra promoter Lisa Erikson said the venture had been successful so far.

“It’s great for people to have an orchestra in Marlborough to listen to, and for those who play to have a vehicle to do so.

“It’s the only way these musicians are able to play, other than in operatic society shows, but they wanted something just for them too because often they can be in the background.

“I think the audience will be pleasantly surprised.”

The orchestra will be conducted by Marina Quintens, a French-born flautist.

Long-term, the orchestra hopes to be able to play two or three concerts a year, get invited to events and play for charity, with the overall aim to become a full symphony orchestra.

Tickets are available at the door.

Entertainment group look to tune up with new voices

By Adam Poulopoulos A local entertainment group which has existed for about 60 years is looking for new voices.

The RSA Entertainment Group has entertained rest homes and other

organisations since the 1950s.

Due to a number of factors numbers have started to fall, and the group has now set out on a recruitment drive.

The group practises every morning from 10-11am at the RSA at Clubs of

Marlborough.

And the pre-requisite? Anyone who can hold a tune.

New CT scanner for hospital announced Over the next 10 days Wairau Hospital will be installing a new CT Scanner that will give clinicians a better look at what’s going on inside a patient’s body.

CT (Computed Tomography) is a 3 Dimensional form of x-ray imaging that is a key diagnostic tool for many conditions including oncology and is also important in trauma assessment.

Wairau Hospital’s nine-year-old eight slice scanner will be removed tomorrow and the installation and testing of the new machine will be completed by noon on September 15.

The new Toshiba Aquilion Prime scanner can perform up to 160 slices in a single rotation which is considerably faster than the current system.

Nelson Marlborough District Health Board specialist services manager Pat Davidsen said it was the same make and model scanner that was installed in Nelson Hospital during July and will ensure all NMDHB patients have access to the same level of CT imaging.

During the installation of the new scanner no CT scans will be carried out at Wairau Hospital.

Patients in need of urgent CT scans will fly by helicopter to Nelson Hospital and return to Wairau Hospital for care wherever clinically possible.

Patients will be escorted by hospital staff at a level of care appropriate to their needs.

“All people who require non-urgent and routine scans that can safely be deferred will be scheduled to be scanned using the new CT scanner after September 15,” said Mr Davidsen.

Transfer out of the region may be considered for patients deemed unsuitable for transport to Nelson Hospital.

There will also be a lowered threshold for the rescue helicopter to fly emergency cases to Nelson, Wellington or Christchurch Hospital depending on the patient’s clinical needs.

Costs for transport and scans in other DHBs have been included in the capital expenditure budget of $1m which includes in the CT purchase.

School wins new iPads for students

By Adam Poulopoulos Southfuels Nelson/Marlborough account manager John Eales, right presented two iPads to Mayfield School students Hayley Rogers, 11, left, and Jakya MacDonald on Wednesday.

The school won the iPads as part of ‘Fuel for Schools,’ a promotion which entitles the purchaser of any Southfuels bulk fuel order to allocate a cent per two litres of fuel to a school of their choice.

Mayfield School was the first school in the country to reach the $1000 target, and chose to redeem a technology package as the reward.

The schools have the choice of a technology or sports equipment package.

Principal Nicky Halligan said she was delighted to receive the iPads.

“The thing that struck me was out of 350 schools, Mayfield was the first to reach the target.”

Mr Eales said the promotion was a good way for customers to help schools attended by their children and grandchildren.

“It’s really neat Mayfield is at the top of the line.

These small schools can struggle sometimes.”

A combined exhibition is being held from September 20 to 28 with works from local artist Lesley Griffiths titled '3 P's in a Pod', and Swiss born artist Florence Berthold with 'Revelations'.

Florence's interpretation of nature using unique watercolour techniques are sure to excite the imagination, while Lesley's works in pastel, pen and ink and pencil show a true passion for the arts.

Originally from Switzerland, Florence moved to Nelson with her partner where she now works as a full time artist and novelist.

Lesley's exhibition will feature 24 pieces that she has been working on over the past year, which she says are products of her 'enjoyment of art'.

For the two women, this is their first time holding an exhibition.

The gallery will host an opening preview night on September 19 from 6pm, where the public is invited to attend, meet the artists and enjoy a glass of wine and nibbles.

During the week of the exhibition, Florence will be at the gallery painting live during weekends. She will be painting original cards, and anyone who visits the gallery that week will go into the draw to win one of her paintings.

Sport inbrief HALL OF FAME T he d at e for t he a n nu a l Marlborough Sports Hall of Fame function has been announced.

The Mayoral reception will occur on Friday, October 24 at 6pm at the Marlborough District Council’s civic chambers.

The Spor ts Hall of Fame recognises the performance of Marlborough sportspeople, coaches and officials whose efforts have gained recognition at national and international level.

TAG – RUGBY LEAGUE Registrations for the summer season of tag rugby league have now opened.

Marlborough Lions Rugby League is running the non-contact competition, and teams of at least 12 players in men’s, women’s, mixed and under-18 leagues are being invited.

RUGBY The Tasman Makos maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 16-all draw against Auckland at Eden Park last weekend.

Horsing around I can’t believe I’ve never paid much attention to horse racing.

In a year when sport on both sides of the Tasman has been tarnished by corruption allegations, with the cricket match-fixing saga and the ASADA drug scandal, the latest horse racing furore continues to gallop into consciousness.

Central Districts jockey David Walker faces two charges of betting on a horse other than his own, and pulling up his own horse to collect the money.

It is believed Walker has admitted to the betting, but not to throwing the races.

It is not the first time Australasian horse racing has been hit by a scandal, and in a nice piece of symmetry, it is just over 30

years to the day since one of Australia’s most embarrassing sporting moments, up there with losing to Zimbabwe in the cricket this week.

The Fine Cotton substitution scam occurred in Queensland, and was notable because it was uncovered in quite a prominent race.

Fine Cotton, a horse which really wasn’t that good, was substituted by an almost identical-looking horse, Dashing Solitaire, which raced better.

Unfortunately, that horse was injured and unable to race, and another horse, Bold Personality, was bought to make sure the investment paid out.

One problem remained – Bold

Personality was a different colour to Fine Cotton.

Trainers applied hair colouring to lighten its legs in the race lead-up, but they forgot to do so on race day.

In its place, white paint was applied, but when it started raining during the race, the paint began to run, and the scam was uncovered.

For someone whose knowledge of horses stretches as far as that scene in The Godfather, this was understandably quite mindblowing.

Fact: Corruption is obviously a blight on any sport, but it does make for some pretty awesome stories.

Seido Karate Tournament About 100 Seido Karate junior students from Dojos across the Top of The South will converge on Marlborough tomorrow for the annual Children’s Tournament.

The tournament is open to students from beginner through to black belt, and starts at 11.00am at Stadium 2000 on Kinross Street.

Blenheim Instructor Kyoshi Eric Hughes said “This is a great opportunity for the kids and teens of all abilities to show off their skills while supporting other competitors in a fun environment.

“Seido Karate is a martial art for everybody that improves balance, endurance, flexibility and co-ordination, while the Seido values of love, respect and obedience build self-respect, selfdiscipline, politeness and tolerance.”

Hanshi Andy Barber, one of only three 8th degree black belts in the Seido style, will be overseeing the tournament along with some of his senior students.

Spectators at the tournament are welcome.

Marlborough’s Hashim Mir, 16, spars at last year’s tournament in Wellington.

Bowls bonanza The team of Colin Wratt, Pauline Bailey and Lindsay Thomason were too strong at the Gascoigne Wicks Mixed Triples Bowling Tournament.

The triples tournament took

place at the Whitehead Park Bowls Club last weekend.

Wratt, Bailey and Thomason won each of their six games.

The team of Lloyd Gallop, John Romano and Dot Capil

finished second, while John May, Trish Downs and Barbara Lancaster were third.

The tournament was the final event of the winter season.
