Browning’s seat in jeopardy Continued from page 1 Smith, the former New Zealand Winegrowers Association chairman, said his journey to Saturday’s win began in January 2012, when he told then-incumbent Kaikoura MP Colin King he would be putting his name forward for the seat over a cup of coffee.

In his acceptance speech at National’s Masonic Centre headquarters, he said the result marked “the end of the beginning,” and spoke of his desire to represent the region’s “grass-roots.”

“It’s been a long journey but it’s been a lot of fun. I don’t feel tired – I feel energised.

“It’s a big electorate with a lot of communities of interest, and we’ve done a lot of work to unite communities and represent them.

“Now the real work starts to make sure we represent you.”

He paid tribute to his family, and electoral team, for their part in the victory.

Smith, wife Julie and children Fenella, 15, Louis, 16, and Hugo, 18, spent the day voting as a family and visiting Julie’s grandmother.

One of Smith’s first duties was to attend a National Party caucus meeting in Wellington yesterday.

Election Day was less positive for Kaikoura’s other candidates.

Green Party representative Steffan Browning has to wait about two weeks

until special votes are counted to see whether he makes it back into the House of Representatives, and has headed to Wellington to make arrangements for his office.

His party won 13 seats through the party vote, and Browning sits at 14 on the list.

Browning said he had no plan B yet should the result stand.

“I would love to be back in there. The changes National is making are tough on the environment, and the social changes are tough on workers.

“I’d like to be there to reduce the impact.”

Walker plans to head to Auckland shortly to visit family.

She said she was disappointed with the result.

“I worked pretty hard and I’ve had a lot of positive feedback since the election.

“People are still ringing me up and they’re equally as disappointed.”

She will be returning to Marlborough after her break.

Preliminary results show 33,291 people cast a party vote in Kaikoura, slightly down on 2011’s figure of 34,128.

An estimated 77.04 percent voted around the country.

National won the nationwide party vote with 48.06 percent, enough to govern alone.

Governor-General visits MGC The Governor-General, Lieutenant General the Right Honourable Sir Jerry Mateparae, met some Marlborough Girls’ College students during a visit to the school yesterday.

Sir Jerry spoke with the students about their overseas studying experiences.

They were welcomed onto Waikawa Marae yesterday morning to begin the tour, before other engagements with Queen Charlotte College, Safe Air and the Marlborough Food and Beverage Cluster.

Over the next two days the pair has a number of other appointments, including opening a new Scout campsite in the Waihopai Valley, and visiting Outward Bound in Anakiwa.

Formal a spectacular affair for young Photos by Celeste Lodewyk The combined colleges formal was held last Friday night at the Marlborough Convention Centre.

Themed ‘A night among the Sakura’, year 12 and 13 students arrived at their formal in style to walk the red carpet, much to the delight of the large crowd that gathered to watch the procession.

Delivering the students to their formal were many interesting forms of transport including Mr Whippy’s icecream van, caravans decorated in fairy lights, a TNL freight truck, V8 revving classic cars plus much more.

The smiles of those attending were as bright as some of their outfits, some of which had an oriental theme.

Long dresses and short dresses for the ladies and suits, bow-ties for the young men.

Dreads disappear Blenheim woman Yohanna Davidson is 47 dreadlocks lighter after having shaved her head for a good cause.

Dubbed ‘the event Yohanna’s been dreading,’ Yohanna had the hair removed in the Forum on Saturday in support of CanTeen and the Terri Stunell Memorial Scholarship, in memory of a friend who passed away from cancer.

Generous gesture Barry Holder with some of the fish he was given as part of a Waikawa Marae initiative last week.

The Marae shared an order with the community after they received it from Nelson.

Barry, who has lived in Picton for about 60 years, said the generosity reminded him of times gone by, before the tradition stopped in the late 1970s.

“The old people used to go hauling on the water and us young ones would walk along the beach, and then they’d share the fish with everyone.

“I thought it was a great gesture, and it bought back a lot of memories.

“It’s good to see it happening again.”

one on one with the Sun

Long Stretch over One of Marlborough’s great sporting careers came to an end this year when cricketer Greg Stretch announced his retirement from representative cricket.

Marlborough’s most capped player spoke to Adam Poulopoulos about nearly three decades representing the province.

The sun is coming out, the temperature is rising and cricket season is set to begin.

It seems like the first suggestions of a Marlborough summer like any other, but for Greg Stretch, season 2014/15 is set to be a little different.

Greg, who played 208 games for Marlborough over 28 years, has hung up the boots, and has taken up a new role managing and selecting the side.

A batsman who kept wicket for long periods in his career, Greg scored 4613 runs and took 71 catches during a career that began when he was 16.

Born and bred in Blenheim, Greg is a self-confessed sports nut.

He also represented Marlborough in indoor cricket, and played football and volleyball.

However, he said he always loved batting the most, from the days when he pretended to be former New Zealand captain Jeff Crowe in his back garden.

“I used to spend a lot of time in the backyard with my dad, and as long as I can remember it was always my number one sport.

“I made him do all the bowling, and I got my mates, who were not as obsessed with cricket as I was, to come over and bowl at me too.”

Greg was still at Marlborough Boys’ College when he got his first representative call-up.

“We played on Horton Park number two in November, it was blowing a real northwest gale, and we got beaten,” Greg said.

“I remember I got a couple of catches but didn’t need to bat.”

half-centuries during his career, with a top score of 118.

He said Marlborough’s Hawke Cup victories in 1994 and 2011, and their defence of the 2011 title against Hawke’s Bay, are “three games that really stick out.”

Playing for 28 years has meant a big commitment, but Greg freely admits he was no gym rat.

“My coaches would say I’m not the fittest. I loved practicing cricket, but as far as running or going to the gym goes, that wasn’t one of my strong suits.”

He considered retirement after playing his 200th game, but one more victory over Nelson, a team Greg said he “loved playing and loved beating” finally brought the curtain down.

“I thought the time was right. I wouldn’t change it for anything.

“It was a huge highlight of my life to play for Marlborough and to play that long.”

Although there are no official records for all the associations, Greg said it was “unlikely” someone had played more games for one province nationally.

With rep cricket off the table, Greg will continue to keep busy, managing New Zealands top SBS Bank branch and turning out for Wairau Valley in club cricket, in addition to his management role.

Just because he will be missing from the Marlborough team playing XI doesn’t mean the family isn’t represented, with son Matthew now a regular selection.

Seems like the name ‘Stretch’ will remain synonymous with Marlborough cricket for a while yet.

Central softballers off to Australia

By Adam Poulopoulos Three Central Softball Club players have been picked to represent New Zealand in Australia next month.

Marlborough Boys’ College pupils Brooklyn Love, 14, Anaru Anderson, 14, and William MacDonald, 13, have all been picked for the New Zealand under-15 squad for the Labour Day Junior Softball Tournament.

The tournament is being held in Adelaide from October 3-6.

Other Australian state teams will be attending, and the New Zealand team will be playing in the under-17 division.

For all three, it is their first call-up into the national setup.

The trio said the tournament would

help them become better players and put them in front of scouts.

William’s dad, Tony MacDonald, will be travelling on the trip as a supporter, while Anaru’s father, Barry Anderson, is the team’s assistant coach.

He said the trio’s selection was significant.

“It’s very exciting for the boys.

“For Marlborough Softball this is huge. It confirms this is a big softball community with good players. And these boys will be punching above their weight at the tournament too.”

The team flies out to the Gold Coast for some warm-up games and team bonding, before making their way to Adelaide.

Aviss beats injuries, field, to take silver

By Adam Poulopoulos Crippled by back and neck injuries, duathlete Susie Aviss contemplated retirement.

Now, she has another international medal to add to her collection.

Susie won silver representing New Zealand at the ITU Long-Distance Duathlon World Championships in Zofingen, Switzerland, earlier this month.

Susie, who works at BikeFit Marlborough, was racing in the women’s 40-44 year-old division.

She completed a 10 kilometre run, a 150km bike ride and another 30km run in a time of eight hours and 45 minutes.

The race was her seventh in a world championship, and the

fourth time she has finished on the podium, following gold in 2008, and two bronzes in her last two attempts.

After her last bronze Susie said she contemplated not returning to Zofingen, where she has raced on the last three occasions, to complete the race referred to as the ‘suffer test.’

“It was at the point where you can’t really see the light at the end of the tunnel, and that’s saying something after 20 years of doing races like this.

“Last year I was constantly in pain, but I still dragged myself out and trained.

Aerial Spraying Programme 2014/15 The aerial spray programme for 2014/15 targeting woody weeds is to commence immediately.

Due to seasonal weed development the programme this year will be in two parts.

1. From Dungeys catchment east to commence immediately, and 2. From Dungeys catchment to the west will be sprayed around December.

This will be advertised separately at that time.

Susie arrived in Europe more than a month before the race to acclimatise, which stood her in good stead when faced with the course’s hilly terrain, temperatures in the high 20s and high humidity.

She said she was considering returning for next year’s event, but her participation was dependent on finances.

By Alister Cooper The Blenheim Racing Pigeon Club held their first race from Christchurch for the season and were pleasantly surprised when the liberator released the flock at 7.30am into sunny skies.

The forecast for the day had been dubious at best.

The fine spell at liberation point extended right up to Cape Campbell, and meant that the birds weren’t going to be too disadvantaged by some homeend showers.

Husband and wife team of Donald and Shirley Morrison of Spring Creek took the 1st and 2nd places with their yearling pigeons completing the 244kms in a little under 3.5 hours with velocities of 1183.78 mpm and 1166.35 mpm respectfully.

Third place to Carl Kirkwood also of Spring Creek with his pied cockbird 298 doing 1159.81 mpm.

Osteoporosis - the silent epidemic Osteoporosis is a disease in which the density and quality of bone are reduced, leading to weakness of the skeleton and increased risk of fracture, particularly of the spine, wrist, hip, pelvis and upper arm.

Osteoporosis and its associated fractures are an important cause of mortality and morbidity.

In many affected people, bone loss is gradual and without symptoms or warning signs until the disease is advanced.

Osteoporosis is a global problem which is increasing in significance as the population of the world both grows and ages.

For these reasons, osteoporosis is often referred to as the “silent epidemic”.

Here are some key facts about osteoporosis: Osteoporosis can be prevented.

56% of women and 29% of men will suffer a fracture after the age of 60 because of osteoporosis.

Young people can suffer from osteoporosis too.

The estimated cost to New Zealand is $1.1billion each year.

One of the most important things you can do for your health is to look after yourself.

Keep active Every day do at least 30 minutes of weight-bearing physical activity that works your muscles against gravity.

Use hip protectors These thin, oval, plastic discs fit over the hip area in specially designed garments and absorb the shock if you fall.

Eat foods that are high in calcium Dairy products, such as milk and cheese, are calcium-rich. Eat at least four servings of dairy products each day.

One glass (200ml) of high-calcium milk provides over 400mg of calcium. (Check the label for the calcium content.)

Spend 30 minutes outdoors each day to ensure an adequate supply of vitamin D. Vitamin D is needed for your body to absorb calcium, and is made in the skin when it is exposed to sunlight.

If you are housebound or getting insufficient exposure to sunlight, you can take vitamin D supplements, but check with your doctor first.

Limit your intake of alcohol.

Don’t smoke.

Breast Cancer Month in New Zealand is October, where health organizations are out in force spreading awareness and fundraising for the nationwide Pink Ribbon Appeal on the 10th and 11th.

Many people have been affected by breast cancer, whether it themselves or family members, but one thing some people do not realise is that men can develop breast cancer too.

In New Zealand, around 20 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year.

Some men may be at greater risk if a first degree relative like a mother or sister, has had breast or ovarian cancer at a young age.

The majority of men diagnosed and treated for early breast cancer will not die from the disease, though some men may be embarrassed about a change in their breast or chest area and put off seeing a doctor.

This may result in a delay in di-

agnosis. Survival is highest when breast cancer is found early.

It is important that men share any close family history of breast cancer with their doctor, as they may need closer monitoring.

Also to show their doctor any new changes in their breast.

Breast cancer symptoms in men can include: • A painless lump close to the nipple (most common symptom) • Fluid discharge from the nipple • A change in appearance of the nipple • A change in the shape or appearance of the breast, such as swelling or dimpling • Pain in the breast • Lumps in the armpit Men tend to have much less breast tissue compared to women, so some of these signs can be easier to notice in men than in women.

These symptoms may also be signs of a benign (non-cancer) breast condition.
