Browning “ecstatic” to receive call Green MP returns to Parliament By Adam Poulopoulos Marlborough-based Green Party MP Steffan Browning is back in Parliament after special votes were tallied during the past two weeks. Browning, who is 14 on the Green Party list, lost the seat he had held during the last political term after his party only tallied 13 seats on Election Night. However Green, who are traditionally strongly represented among special votes, gained Browning’s seat back after the additional votes were counted. Browning was with friends at
his home at Havelock waiting for the news when the phone rang just after 1pm on Saturday afternoon. “I was ecstatic on Saturday afternoon. I’m very happy now but I was ecstatic then. “We thought we’d go to the Slip Inn for a celebratory lunch if it went well, and we did, but the phone was going crazy. “I’m looking forward to it. I’ve got the first term behind me now and we have a fantastic team.” With his future in limbo, Browning said he had begun to prepare for the possibility he’d
have to do his work outside of Parliament. “I couldn’t assume at all. Plan B had started to form but I’m very pleased it’s turned out the way it has. “I had different offers coming in but I’m back where I want to be.” Browning was back in Wellington for party meetings earlier this week. After the special votes were tallied the National Party lost the absolute majority they looked to have on Election Night, and now must govern with other parties.
Lady luck brings more LOTTO winnings A Blenheim couple are on ‘cloud nine’ after winning $1 million with Lotto First Division last Saturday night, while another lucky lotto player is yet to find out their good fortune after winning this week’s Winning Wheel ticket, purchased at Fresh Choice in Picton. The winning couple circled the winning numbers off on their ticket as they watched the live Lotto draw, but it still took some time for the reality of their win to sink in. “I got a little mixed up as I checked off each of the numbers on my ticket, I wasn’t sure whether one of the numbers was an 18 or 19,” explained the winner. “I said to my husband, ‘I think we have all six numbers, but I could be wrong’, so we jumped on the website to double check.” “We had to check the numbers a good few times before we really believed it.” “Our family were probably more excited than we were!” she laughed. Top of the wish list for the lucky couple is buying a new home. “We are renting now and this win means that we’ll be able to buy a

home without the need for a mortgage, it’s very exciting,” the winner said. “The thing we are most excited about is the financial security the $1 million prize will bring to our future, being retired isn’t easy on the bank account.” The winning ticket was sold at Midway Dairy & Takeaway in Blenheim. This latest Lotto win is part of a lucky streak for Blenheim residents.
Just last week a Blenheim Bullseye player took home $120,000 when her lucky birthday number came up last week. “I was absolutely gobsmacked,” the winner said. “I’ve been playing Bullseye since the game started, using my family’s birthdays as our lucky numbers,” she explained. “We’ve won a few minor prizes and bonus tickets along the way, but
nothing like this, the win really is a dream come true.” The Bullseye winner, who bought her ticket from New World Blenheim, plans to use some of her winnings to splash out on a dream holiday ‘sooner rather than later’. “We are really keen to use the winnings to go on the cruise of a lifetime, maybe to the Caribbean or even Alaska.” And in August, two tickets bought in Blenheim hit the jackpot in the same weekend, with a couple from the Nelson area taking home $4.5 million with Powerball, while a lucky Lotto player from Blenheim won $500,000 with Lotto First Division. 2014 has been a particularly lucky year for players in the Tasman and Marlborough regions, with more than $16.4 million in prizes being won by 250,000 player, including seven major First Division prizes. As for this week’s Winning Wheel ticket purchased at Fresh Choice in Picton, all players who purchased their ticket from this store are encouraged to check their ticket at any Lotto retailer or through the Lotto NZ App.

SURGEON APPOINTED A new General Surgeon has been appointed to a permanent position at Wairau Hospital. General surgeon Dr Clive Solomon will join the Wairau surgical team from Whanganui. Mr Solomon has worked as a locum surgeon in Wairau Hospital for a year, working between Blenheim and his private practice in Whanganui. He will start in his permanent role early in the New Year.
Graffiti has appeared in several noticeable locations in Blenheim after the weekend.
Tagging spree angers “Worst outbreak for a while” - Police spokesperson By Adam Poulopoulos Taggers have once again targeted the Blenheim CBD, after a spate of graffiti appeared over the weekend. Tags appeared on Seymour Street, between the courthouse and Countdown Supermarket, with graffiti also appearing on some side roads running off Seymour Street. The courthouse itself was targeted, along with businesses like Gascoigne Wicks and Noel Leeming, and the Seymour Square bus shelter.
It is believed the tagging occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, and was all sprayed by the same person or group. Marlborough District Council reserves and amenities manager Rosie Bartlett said MDC had received ten different reports of graffiti. Council were expected to remove the graffiti on public property by the end of business yesterday. Ms Bartlett said she was unaware of the cost of removal as it depended on whether the tags
needed to be removed or painted over. Ms Bartlett said tags on private property were the owner’s responsibility to remove. A police spokesperson said enquiries were continuing, but they were unsure who was responsible. The spokesperson added it was “the worst outbreak for a while.” The latest spate follows a spike in tagging earlier in the year.
HELP KAPA HAKA GROUP GET TO TAHITI Marlborough’s Te Rerenga o Te Ra Kapahaka group will be travelling to Tahiti next year to represent New Zealand in the CIOFF Festival. This festival brings together several countries for a cultural exchange over two weeks. To help fundraise for the group’s trip, there will be a Casino night this Saturday (October 11) at the Clubs of Marlborough main hall. Tickets for the event cost $35 and can be purchased at the door on the night, from the Sun office or by phoning Marie Schroder on (03) 577 8131.
Search and Rescue taking new members Continued from page 1 For local boy Daniel Goldsthorp, joining as a volunteer had always been something he aimed to do. “I was looking for a way to help the community that fit around my own commitments. I have been with Marlborough Land Search and Rescue for nearly 12 months now and I have enjoyed the training courses and working with the others,” he said. Fellow volunteers Julia Eason and Shaun
Crabb are also relatively new to the organisation. Each have commented on the camaraderie and enjoyment that came with being part of Marlborough Land Search and Rescue. “This is a group I have wanted to be part of for a while now, so after finishing university and moving to Blenheim from Christchurch I joined. It’s been the best decision and now one year on it’s going great and I have met so many great people,” Julie said. “I love the outdoors and community work
that is associated, and being able to help people in trouble makes it worthwhile,” said Shaun who has been a volunteer for six months. To find out more about becoming a volunteer for Marlborough Land Search and Rescue, email Marlborough@landsar.org. nz or go along to one of their training nights on the first Tuesday of each month at the Emergency Operations Centre in Blenheim at 7pm.
SONNY BILL IN TOWN Sonny Bill Williams will be in town this weekend as he continues his comeback to rugby union. He arrives with his CountiesManukau team mates on Saturday night, for the game against Tasman at Lansdowne Park the next day.

History and nature Driftwood Retreat and Eco-Tours’s ‘Meet the Royal Spoonbill Tour,’ which sees a guided group kayak down the Opawa River in search of the birds, seems an idyllic prospect. Sun reporter Adam Poulopoulos went to check it out. Marlburians have an affinity with the sea that sets the region apart. Fishing, white baiting, jet boating, cruising, you name it – we like to hop on boats and explore. The Sounds tend to generate plenty of buzz, and rightly so, but that means Blenheim’s rivers can be overlooked. Tours like this one make that seem a little unfair. Sunday morning dawned bright, still and not too hot. Local couple Rose and Will Parsons have been running Driftwood Eco-Tours out of their Dillons Point Road property for 10 years, and Will says conditions are pretty close to ideal. Will, a wildlife photographer, calls the Spoonbill Tour “a taster.” It is a two-hour jaunt beginning right behind the property. The group take a leisurely paddle to the sandbank between the Opawa and Wairau Rivers, all the while looking for birds and taking photos. The trip is about 10 kilometres in total. The group grabs their lifejackets before being put through a brief kayaking lesson. For those who haven’t been kayaking or can’t swim, it takes some special talent to unintentionally capsize – Will says he’s had one roll over in seven years of taking the tour. It is just after 10am before we set off. There are eight of us, plus Will and Adam, our guides, and Vix, The Parsons’ Jack Russell Terrier and unofficial mascot.
The Spoonbill team. Photo: Will Parsons.
It isn’t long before we see some Spoonbills, with their distinctive long beaks and white headdresses. Right on cue, the paddles go down and the cameras emerge. A core of between 70 and 150 Spoonbills remain in Marlborough all-year round as the others migrate around the country. In addition, we catch a glimpse of some terns, both black and white-fronted, three different species of shag, harriers and skylarks among others. But it isn’t just birds you’re looking at. The mouth of the Wairau River was the first settling place for European settlers in New Zealand, and 800 years ago, the Moa Hunters also made landfall in the
same area. Will believes not too many people know what the opportunity provides. “It’s great in the fact we’ve got a migratory bird within New Zealand like the Royal Spoonbill, and this area is the crucible of New Zealand history, and its right on our doorstep. “I think it’s cool people can come out like this and see what’s on our doorstep.” Driftwood Eco-Tours have a selection of five different Royal Spoonbill dates between now and the end of November, including a tour from 2-4pm tomorrow. For more information, visit their website.

How the ornamental sheep looked when it was taken.
Get Molesworth to Molesworth By Adam Poulopoulos A Monro Street family are looking for answers after their full-sized ornamental sheep was stolen off their front lawn. Heather Christie bought the plaster sheep back in May as a birthday gift for her husband Alister, who is an ex-farmer. The sheep was named ‘Molesworth’ as it was to become an unofficial mascot for the 20th annual Molesworth Run, organised by Marlborough Harriers. The 20th edition, on Saturday, November 15, will also be the 20th occasion Alister has run in the event. The ornament was taken on the weekend of September 20 and 21. Heather said she could not figure
out why Molesworth would be stolen. “It’s devastating. We couldn’t believe anyone would take it. “We do miss him, as do all the children who walk past looking for him. “We’d like him back to take him through to Molesworth.” Heather had also prepared Molesworth a Marlborough Harriers outfit to wear on the day. “It’s got little sneakers and everything,” she said. The ornament was the only item stolen on the night. Heather said she thought one muscular person would be able to carry the sheep themselves. Police have been notified of the theft, and Heather asks Moleworth be returned to 43 Monro Street.

Busted driving too fast Caring club
Stomach bug There have been a number of reports from families in the community of a stomach bug doing the rounds, causing fevers, body aches, vomiting and diarrhea. Some reports have included young children being treated for severe dehydration. A Nelson Marlborough District Health Board spokesperson told the Sun while there had not been a notification of an outbreak, he wished to remind people of the importance of handwashing when dealing with ill family members.
“If you have ill children please keep them away from daycare facilities, kindergarten and school as viruses can spread quite quickly. “In the case of a child vomiting, particularly babies, don’t leave it too long before taking them to a GP as dehydration can set in and can become serious, even causing death. “Also, handwashing and basic hygiene for children and for adults changing the nappies of affected babies can help to prevent the spread of a virus.”
Dear Ed, I would like to add my comments to letter writer Embarrassed motorist, I agree with what has been said. I wish to say to those people who drive like a madman through the yard at Mico Plumbing in Boyce St Blenheim, we can still see you and your number plates are about to reported to the Police. We want to see you as a customer but very soon you are going to be skewered like a pig on the end of a forklift or be attached to the back end of a large truck. Keep out of our yard unless you intend to buy from us and drive in slowly. I think I can speak on behalf of similar businesses in town as health and safety officer here at work. Our driveway is not a short cut. Remember the phrase – “Better to arrive five minutes late than Dead on time”. Mark Reid
Dear Ed, Thank You to the Blenheim Beaver Town Lions Club - lots of smiles with the goodies brought to our doors on Saturday, Caring means alot to those you visited with yummy biscuits, we are mindful of the work entailed. ‘Bethsaida Oldie’
Take care
Dear Ed, I love the rivers around Blenheim, and I regularly head down there for a walk or to wet a line. Lately I’ve been saddened by the amount of rubbish I’ve seen on the banks, the boat ramps and in the rivers themselves. These rivers need to be taken care of, not used as rubbish bins because you feel too lazy. If you’re going to go boating or fishing take away what you take. I’m no greenie but if people took a little more care maybe the rivers would get cleaned up and maybe more people would use them. Anon

Life on the water Since picking up an oar for the first time 45 years ago, Kevin ‘Mouse’ Taylor has been just as comfortable in a rowboat as on land. One of the Blenheim Rowing Club’s favourite sons spoke to Adam Poulopoulos. Born and bred in Marlborough, Kevin started out playing at halfback in his early years. He was one of the founding members of the Redwood Rugby Club. However, the national game began to take up less of his time. He said he was 13 when he was first invited to join rowing and be a coxwain by his best schoolmate at the time. “The rowers in those early days really looked after me. “Some of them bought me up like a brother. They carted me around everywhere.” As well as new friendships Kevin picked up a new nickname. Both have stood the test of time. “One of the coaches named me Mouse because I was so tiny. “In those days coxswains had to be a certain weight, and as I was small, the crew had to carry bags of sand in the boat to make up the weight.” He says the highlights have been numerous. In 1972 he won a red coat title, the highest honour for a domestic rower, while he was coxswain for a different club. “Other clubs used to ask you to cox for them in those days,” he said. As his career progressed he moved into coaching. He has enjoyed coaching both his sons, and in 1996 he coached son Bodie’s crew to second in the under-18 novice fours division at the 1996 Maadi Cup. In 2000 he was made a life member of the Blenheim Rowing Club. “I felt really humbled and honoured by that,” he said. After so many years rowing with others, Mouse has seen many highcalibre Marlburians come through the ranks. He lists Joseph Sullivan, Marlbor-
ough’s only Olympic gold medallist who retired earlier this year, as a standout “boat mover.” “He was a guy I really admired - he never shirked anything. He’s probably our most accomplished and medalled rower. He’s done it since he was a junior. “Every boat he got into, it won.” Mouse took over coaching the BRC’s masters crews in 2011 after he stopped rowing due to injury. Under his tutelage they have been successful. In 2012 and 2013 they were the top masters club in the South Island, and they went even better this year, finishing as the top club in the country, at the national champs at Lake Karapiro last month. It is that success, and the good atmosphere around the club, that Mouse says will keep him going back for a while yet. “I love the culture and the camaraderie. “Two years ago I used to take a squad of eight away to nationals. Now I am taking 17, and I look after 24 altogether. The numbers are still growing. “They’re competitive on the water but we’ve got a really good social life off it. Off the water, Mouse now works at Pernod Ricard’s Kaituna vineyard, having shut down his printing business, Bos Print, late last year. Mouse said the backing of his wife Jenny and his two sons has been crucial in keeping him on the water. “She met me in 1973 and knew I was involved in rowing, and she’s let me do it ever since! “She’s been a big support behind me all the time and giving me encouragement and the boys have been good too.”

Spring festival a highlight for weekend Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk There will be another excuse to love spring this Saturday when the St Ninians Church hosts its big Spring Festival. This inaugural festival will see Riley Crescent closed off and a number of stalls opened up, a superslide and bouncy castle put up as well as a huge variety of fun activities, food and entertainment held throughout the day. There will also be face painting, a treasure hunt, a lucky dip, Mr Whippy and a cafe to sit at and enjoy the festivities. The event kicks off at 9:30am and finishes at 2pm and will feature the festival highlight, ‘Build a Scarecrow’
competition. Families are encouraged to take part in this competition by creating their version of a scarecrow and registering it on the day by 10:30am. The scarecrows will be judged at 1pm and prizes will be awarded. First place is a return family ticket for the Coastal Pacific train from Blenheim to Picton, and second prize is a family ticket (four people) for the Blenheim Riverside Railway. There will also be a prize for each participant. The festival is a fundraiser for the Wairau Youth and Family Trust which employs community children’s worker
Robin Humphreys. Robin’s role is to support young people and their families in the community and spends 12 hours a week at Redwoodtown School as a 24/7 youth worker, mentoring and encouraging students. Through the Trust Robin also coordinates the popular ‘Crazy Cool Kids’ school holiday programmes, and she leads ‘The Light Factory’ on Sunday mornings at St Ninians Church. Right: Mrs and Mr Straw, scarecrows made by Fay McCallum, are an example of what can be created in the Build a Scarecrow competition for this weekend’s St Ninians Spring Festival.
The Nation kids - Blake, 5, Jemima, 4, and Benji, 8, got dressed in some varied costumes for the occasion.
Back: The 23 Grove Road Staff - George Pupich, Tessa-Jane Power and Alice Lichtnecker, and front: Lucy Price, 5, Lillybea Scammell, 7, Ruby Price, 6, Hannah Hayles, 7, and Mia Harris, 3.
Dress-up day on Grove Road Kids made the most of their school holidays, and the sunshine, by descending on 23 Grove Road Coffee House dressed in a variety of different outfits. Superheroes, fairies and others all came out in force yesterday afternoon.
The café staff also got involved in the fun. A bouncy castle was positioned at the back of the café, while a colouring competition was also held. Ruby Price, 6, Lillybea Scammell, 7, and Lucy Price, 5.
Irish Rovers’ Blenheim Farewell this week By Adam Poulopoulos Iconic folk group the Irish Rovers are back in New Zealand, and their upcoming Blenheim show may be the last time Marlburians get to see them live. The eight-person group plays on Friday night at Marlborough Boys’ College, beginning at 7:30pm. The show is the 13th of 20 on ‘The Farewell to Rovin’ tour, their last trip to New Zealand. It is 42 years since their first trip to New Zealand. Founding member, singer and guitarist George Millar said he was looking forward to returning to Blenheim. “They’re good people and I remember them clapping and singing along, and that’s what it’s all about. “If they leave whistling ‘The Drunken Sailor’ (an Irish Rovers song) then I feel like we’ve done our job.”
All eight current band members are from Ireland, but the band formed in Canada in 1963. George, a founding member, said the constant travel had become a bit tough. “After going for 50 years you feel like getting off the road a little bit. “Touring is a young man’s game and we’re older boys, so you learn to pace yourself. “Cher’s on her fourth farewell tour and we’re on our first, so maybe we’ve got a couple to go yet,” he joked. Tickets are still available from the Floor Pride Marlborough Civic Theatre or the TicketDirect website. The tour began in Palmerston North on September 25 and finishes in Gore on October 20, before the band travels to Hawaii for two shows. Left: The Irish Rovers ahead of their farewell tour.

MAKING WAVES Being prepared will save lives “Things can go wrong very quickly...” Maritime NZ Deputy Director Lindsay Sturt October 17–24 has been declared Safer Boating Week this year. This will become an annual focus on keeping boaties safe in the lead up to Labour Weekend, the traditional time to get boats and gear ready for summer. The aim of the week is geared at getting three simple messages through to boat owners: • Prep your boat – prepare your boat and make sure it’s safe • Check your gear – check you have the right safety equipment and it’s working • Know the rules – and know what to do if something goes wrong. Maritime NZ Deputy Director and Forum chair Lindsay Sturt said Forum members will be taking a coordinated approach to making sure Kiwis
going out on the water have a great time, but above all get home safely. “We know one in every three New Zealanders goes out on the water. Messing about in boats is a national passion, but last year 19 people, mainly men, didn’t make it home. “So far this year, 14 boaties have already died,” he said. The Forum recommends
lifejackets should be worn at all times on boats less than six metres. As part of Safer Boating Week, boaties will be encouraged to check that their lifejackets, boats and safety gear are in good condition and serviced, and will be reminded that the skipper is responsible for the safety of all on board at all times.
“Preparation is essential before heading out on the water,” Mr Sturt said. “That means making sure vessels are seaworthy, but it also includes ensuring boaties know what to do in an emergency and have reliable, waterproof means of calling for help. “When things go wrong, they tend to go wrong very quickly. Being prepared will save lives.” During the week Maritime NZ will lead activities around lifejackets and regulation. Maritime Officers will be at boat ramps around the country doing lifejacket checks and providing safety advice to boaties. For more information visit the Safer boating page: www.saferboating.org.nz.
Prep your boat
• Check your lifejackets – make sure that lifejackets are still the correct size (especially for children), in good condition and suitable for the type of boating you do. - Service your inflatable lifejacket – make sure it’s checked and serviced, and regularly check that the gas cylinder is properly secured and not corroded. • Check your equipment – look at all of the equipment on your boat and make sure it’s in good working order and you have everything you need.
• Service your engine – schedule an annual service and make regular visual checks to ensure your boat’s engine is up to the job. • Check and change your fuel – if your boat has been out of the water for a while, it pays to replace old fuel with clean, fresh fuel. • Always plan to use a third of your fuel for the trip out, a third for the trip back, and have a third in reserve to allow for anything unexpected. • Check your battery – make

Check your gear • Check batteries on portable equipment such as torches, radios and your GPS, and replace them if you need to. Make sure your distress beacon’s registration is up to date. • Check you’re prepared for an emergency – look at where your safety equipment is stored. Can you access it easily in an emergency or after a capsize? Put together a floating ‘grab bag’ that contains all the emergency gear you will need should your boat capsize.

sure the boat’s battery is professionally checked so that it will be capable of operating all electric equipment and have enough strength to start the motor. After lying idle over winter, batteries have a habit of providing a start or two before failing completely. • Give your boat a good onceover – take a thorough look and make sure everything on your boat is in good working order. If you find anything that is damaged or worn, repair it properly or replace it.

CHEF’S SPECIAL

Hotel d’Urville’s Seafood Restaurant Bar and Grill By Celeste Lodewyk Dining out at a restaurant is a special, often celebratory experience. So what makes an unforgettable experience? Hotel d’Urville owners Tony and Sarah Lawrence say it’s the combination of quality ingredients prepared to the highest standard, friendly service and a relaxing ambience - all found at d’Urvilles Seafood Restaurant Bar and Grill “There is nothing better than sitting in front of a beautifully prepared meal made from the freshest ingredients and an accompanying glass of Marlborough wine,” Tony says. The restaurant’s existing menu has proven to be hugely popular with diners and the new summer additions will further compliment it, Tony says. “Our summer menu will be launched this weekend and will incorporate a number of our old favourites with some new dishes.” One recent addition is the slow roasted alpine origin Silere Merino lamb rump served with smoked eggplant puree, glazed baby beets and chimmichurri. “This dish is the one we have de-
veloped for the Silver Fern Farms Premier Selection Awards and is extremely popular among diners. It is priced at $29.50 and matches perfectly with a Marlborough Pinot Noir,” Tony says. The new summer menu will continue to showcase d’Urvilles selection of speciality seafood, including the popular Kaimoana tasting platter. “This dish is the second most favourite with our diners behind our wild venison loin. Not only will this menu be fresh and exciting, but it is also affordable with entrees starting from $12 and mains starting from $26. From now until Christmas a special festive menu is available. Designed to cater for 15-24 people, it is a set buffet menu priced at only $59 per person. It includes a tantalising selection of seafood and traditional Christmas dishes. Christmas functions will be held in a private dining area, making it the ideal option for businesses celebrating with their staff, families and friends. To make a booking for dinner or for a Christmas function, contact Hotel d’Urville today.

it’s going to be interesting to see how they have developed in that time. “We also have one brand new garden which, when you see it, you will be amazed with how beautifully landscaped it is,” Nicky said. The gardens on the tour are in the Omaka, Hawkesbury and Fairhall areas, and will be open on Saturday, October 18 from 9am - 5pm, and on Sunday, October 19 from 11am - 5pm. How the tour works: Get a group of friends together and purchase a programme for $20 per person which provides a map with where the gardens are. “With this programme people can visit the gardens as they choose and the $20 covers both days of the tour,” Nicky said. Drive to each garden and enjoy seeing some of the “most amazing” gardens with breathtaking views. There will be a selection of yummy food, tea and coffee sold on both days at one of the gardens, as well as a sausage sizzle and cold drinks at another. To purchase a programme, see the advertisement on this page.
Outdoor space Whether you choose to employ the services of a landscaper or decide to do the dirty work yourself, you need to think hard about what sort of garden would be most suitable for your situation. Think about how you want to engage with your outdoor area. Do you want to use it for entertaining? Do you want a nice lawn where your kids can play? Sit down and make a list of what you would ideally want from a garden, and think carefully about whether your budget, environment and time constraints would allow you to achieve this. Your local garden centre is a great place to get advice on plant choice and care. There are a number of plants that are particularly popular including Camellias which are a perennial favourite. ’Gay Sue’ is lovely – it has frilly white flowers with a yellow centre and can be used as a hedge. Fragrant plants are also popular. Daphne, for example, is being incorporated into many gardens.

FORREST GRAPERIDE Entries for the 2015 Forrest GrapeRide are now open. The event is being held on Sunday, March 28, 2015. For more information visit the GrapeRide website. HARRIERS Marlborough Harriers’ Summer Runners programme will commence on Thursday, October 16 with a pack run/walk from the clubrooms. Another pack training run leaves tomorrow at 6pm from the clubrooms. FOOTBALL The Nelson Marlborough Falcons opened their season with a 4-1 win over Heartland Wairarapa at Trafalgar Park on Sunday. They play Canterbury United in Christchurch on Sunday.

Local snatches junior rider honours Blenheim’s Emma Pilcher made the most of a hometown advantage aboard Snazzy As to win the Mikes Mowers KiwiSpan Junior Rider on Sunday with an impressive jump-off performance. Billed as ‘the’ class to watch at this weekend’s Fruitfed Supplies ESNZ’s Marlborough Spring Jumping and Show Hunter Show, the junior rider did not disappoint. Featuring eight of the South Island’s top juniors, five went through to the jump-off to battle it out against the clock. First out Canterbury visitor Jessica Sonne on Mi-
moa stopped the clock in a time of 38.58 seconds but paid for it with one rail down for four faults. Kaikoura’s Jack Ford on Strictly NZPH was next, but he too picked up four faults. Current Young Rider of the Year Rose Alfeld jumped clear in 38.89 seconds aboard Last Song and looked set to pick up her first win of the season with just Pilcher and Wellington’s Sophie Scott on Benrose Rockstar left to go. But 19-year-old Pilcher and her gutsy little palomino produced a cracker in front of their home crowd, leaving all the poles intact with more than a second in
hand to seal the win. Riding last, Scott pushed hard but two rails down saw her drop to fifth. The other local winner was Kimberley Harrison-Jones, who triumphed in the hotly-contested Weatherbeeta South Island Foxhunter Hack. The event was the first jumping event to be held at the newly opened $500,000 Marlborough Equestrian Park, and attracted riders from throughout Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, Wellington and the West Coast.
RUGBY The Tasman Makos have secured a home semifinal after thrashing Canterbury 38-10 over the weekend. The semi will be in Nelson, but before that, they play Counties at Lansdowne Park in their final roundrobin game on Sunday. The Makos may top the table should they win.
Fun training sessions aim to raise $10,000 The Jules Taylor Wines Marlborough Women’s Tri is less than two months away, and for many women, training is now well underway. For those looking for some added inspiration, organisers have scheduled a series of fun runs and rides which will also raise money for charity. Naming sponsor Jules Taylor Wines will donate $1 to the Marlborough Cancer Society for each kilometre that participants
walk, run or bike, up to a maximum of $10,000. The donation will go towards a new programme aimed to help women undergoing cancer treatment get back into exercise through personalised training sessions and massage. The fun running and cycling sessions are designed for the whole family. “You don’t need to enter the Women’s Tri to participate, it’s about spending a fun
day with your family and raising money for a great cause,” said organiser Mark Grammer. The 5km runs and 15km bike rides will take place in the month leading up to the triathlon, which is on November 30. The first run will be on Sunday, October 26, starting at 9am at the Taylor River Amphitheatre. No registration is required prior to the event - just sign up on the day.
Triples Tournament winds up season Marlborough Volleyball’s Fairweathers’ Senior Winter League finished their season last Thursday with the Triples Tournament being played at Stadium 2000. Triples is played fast and furious, with teams competing on a badminton-sized court. Each game had a duration of nine minutes with a one minute break for changeover. Premier Grade event was won by Uso 4 Life, with Raging Pineapples taking C Grade honours and The Flying Fijians taking out Social Grade. The Fairweathers’ Fair Play Team of the Week Award went to the Hybrids. After the Triples Tournament was over prize-giving was held at sponsors Fairweathers on Scott where the most valuable players for each
grade for the winter season were announced. In the premier grade two awards were given to acknowledge the difference between the top and the lower teams. Premier A MVP was awarded to Toby Hogg from Wolf Pack, Premier B to Fabio Raimundo from Kinoaths. C Grade went to a player with just three seasons’ experience, Conner Broughton from M & M’s (Mayfield Motors), and finally the Social Grade MVP was presented to Emilien Remond from Indevin Thunderballs. The beach fours competition is next on the calendar, taking place on Thursday evenings commencing November 6, and running until December 11.
WINE RACE Entries are open for this year’s Wineworks Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc Yacht Race. The event, which is open to members of any yacht club, begins in Marlborough and finishes in Wellington. Entries for the race, which is on November 6, close on October 30.
