Hope remains for missing pilot Helicopters are concentrating their search in an area near Mt Arthur

Searching continues for a helicopter missing since Tuesday morning and its pilot, former Blenheim man Damian Webster, in steep, bush-clad terrain 35km west of Motueka. Yesterday four helicopters and five ground teams resumed searches for the helicopter missing since Tuesday morning in an area of Kahurangi National Park 35km west of Motueka, in the Nelson region. On the ground, a total of 20 searchers were operating in extremely difficult conditions in steep, bush-covered terrain. The decision to not use a search and rescue dog was made yesterday due to a 1080 drop in the area. continued page 2

Hot breakfast for a cause Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Alzheimers Marlborough is looking to organise a day outing for its clients next year, but to do so the organisation needs to fundraise to help cover travel costs. There will be a fundraising brunch held tomorrow at the Alzheimers Marlborough Day Care Centre on Wither Road from 10:30am - 1:30pm. Not only will it help raise money, but it will give people the opportunity to have a look around the centre and learn more about what it provides its current base of 44 clients, said Day Care supervisor Jo Dell. "This is a great way to promote what we have here and the importance of our work. "We would really appreciate the community supporting us in this as it does cost a lot to hire a bus to take our clients, staff and carers out on a day trip. "The last one we had was in March and we visited Yealands Winery, the Salt Works and stopped for lunch at the East Coast Inn. "Everyone really enjoyed this and it's our aim to provide this for them each year, so if we can raise funds to help cover the costs that would be so wonderful," she said. Tickets cost only $15 per person and include a cooked breakfast of bacon, sausages, scrambled eggs, croissants, fresh fruit and waffles as well as live entertainment by Anna Moore. Numbers are limited due to space so get in quick, phone (03) 577 6172 to book a ticket.

Search continues for helicopter missing near Motueka The Robinson 44 helicopter’s last known position, at around 8am Tuesday, was over steep, bush-covered terrain. It went missing while on a flight from Karamea, on the West Coast to Nelson. No emergency beacon signal has been detected from the missing helicopter and the search area is based on information from the helicopter’s tracking system. The area being searched is around 5km in each direction from that point.

Four helicopters searching for the missing aircraft were initially hampered by high winds, but have since returned to the area as well as land search and rescue teams. Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) search and rescue controller Neville Blakemore said the focus for yesterday was completing the detailed search of the area around the helicopter’s last known position. “After the frustration of yesterday’s high

winds, conditions in the air are excellent and all four helicopters are conducting very low altitude, slow-speed searching of the bush canopy,” he said. “Things are more challenging on the ground and the teams are conducting contour searches, following the lay of the land. The area is covered in very steep ravines so it is very hard work, but the people on the ground are well-trained and committed to a comprehensive search.”

Wedding ‘like a dream’ By Celeste Lodewyk The wedding countdown has officially begun for Ward couple Michelle Cassidy and Keiran Hickman, the winners of the Marlborough Dream Wedding Giveaway. Michelle will walk down the aisle next Saturday, October 18, and marry her fiance of six years in front of around 115 family members and friends at the Old Saint Mary's Convent. Their wedding reception will be held at the Giesen Sports and Events Centre in Renwick. Asked how she was feeling leading up to her big day, Michelle

said there were definitely nerves but most of all she was excited. "I am still so blown away that this is happening for us, everyone involved has been so amazing and I am really looking forward to the day," she said. Michelle and Keiran have asked that instead of wedding gifts, they make a donation to the Cystic Fibrosis Association. Michelle also plans to run her first half marathon in Auckland to fundraise for the cause as part of the couple's honeymoon. "There are members of our family who have cystic fibrosis, so a big group of us will be going up

for the marathon," she said. They wished to again thank all of the businesses who have so generously donated and supported the Marlborough Dream Wedding Giveaway. Organiser Alysha Hutchison said planning for the wedding had gone well. "The team that came together from the start just stuck with what they offered and worked alongside the couple, and Michelle and Kieran have been great to deal with. "I am really looking forward to seeing it all come together on the day," she said.

A Blenheim couple have moved into the dream home they recently won through the Heart Foundation’s lottery. The couple, who were drawn last month, received the keys to the Wanaka home last week.

Councillors get a little glimpse of Hollywood

From left: Jeffrey Clifford, Producer, Katie Frost, Film Wellington, Tracy Johnston, Destination Marlborough, Councillors Laressa Shenfield, Graeme Barsanti, Jamie Arbuckle and Terry Sloan, Executive Producer Tom Karnowski, Marlborough farmer Rob Peter, the owner of the site location and Jared Connon, Supervising Location Manager. Marlborough District Councillors this week got the opportunity to learn a little about the challenges of bringing a Hollywood film crew to a remote location during a visit to the East Coast base for the scenes being filmed for “The Light Between Oceans”. Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman and five councillors were shown through the make-up and wardrobe trailers and Supervising Location Manager Jared Connon explained the work that went into creating a period film setting. Mr Sowman presented the film’s Executive Producer Tom Karnowski with a bottle of Marlborough wine and book about the region. A cast and crew of about 70 people are in Marlborough for up to six weeks for the scenes which are being filmed on a private property on the East Coast. “This location is the most spectacular I’ve ever filmed in,” Mr Karnowski, commented about the region. “The isolated beauty is stunning.”

HOTEL COMING DOWN Simcox Construction has confirmed it will be demolishing the old City Hotel building today. The building, which is almost 100 years old, is located on High and Wynen Streets. Owner Rob Anderson opted for demolition after it was deemed to need earthquake strengthening.

Uncle Joe’s oils going nuts By Adam Poulopoulos The name ‘Uncle Joe’s Walnuts and Hazelnuts’ may suggest otherwise, but it is the company’s selection of oils that have been making the biggest splash recently. Uncle Joe’s Walnut Oil has been judged gourmet culinary champion oil, and awarded a gold medal, from this year’s Auckland Easter Show Gourmet Culinary Oils competition. Earlier in the year the company, based in Grovetown, was awarded three awards at the International Gourmet Oil Competition in Paris. Competing against 120 oils from around the world, the company’s walnut, mustard seed and hazelnut oils won silver, bronze and a gourmet

You cannot be serious! Tennis club awarded new laptop By Adam Poulopoulos Marlborough Tennis Club office administrator Linley Wetton, left, and club president Judy Shanahan received a free laptop computer from Brendon Price Computers manager Brad Clark recently. The club is one of 22 local community groups who have received, or will receive, a free laptop from BP Computers. For the club, the gift could not have come at a better time, as the laptop they shared with the Marlborough Tennis Association stopped working. Judy said the club needed a new laptop when the association got one of their own.

“We get a lot of emails with people wanting to know things, especially at this time of the year. “We’ve very grateful for it.” Brad said BP Computers looked to cover a diverse range of organisations as part of the promotions. “It was so exciting. We originally did it to get opinions from the judges. “We’ve won a few medals and we wanted to see how they

went on an international scale, but to win over the French walnut oils was amazing.” Jenny and husband Malcolm Horwell started producing walnuts for Uncle Joe’s in 1997, but have since diversified. They now produce a variety of nut and seed products, including oils, kernels, spreads and the nuts themselves. The oil is produced in conjunction with Garth Neal, who owns the press used to make it. Malcolm said the next aim was to get people more familiar with Uncle Joe’s. “We’ve got a good brand, and we’ve definitely got a section of the market now. “We’ve got a good variety, so hopefully we’ve got something that suits everyone’s palate.”

New gatekeepers at Tombstone By Adam Poulopoulos Tombstone Backpackers in Picton has new owners, but those staying there can rest in peace knowing it’s in good hands. Gary and Nikki Husband had their first day as owners of the Gravesend Place property earlier this month. The couple moved from Wanaka, where they have spent the last 21 years, to take the opportunity. It is the first backpackers they have owned. Gary was formerly the Cardrona Alpine Reserve general manager and Nikki was an early childhood teacher. Gary said the family had spent holidays in Picton a lot in the past, and it was that and his love of fishing and scalloping that brought them here permanently. “There’s lovely bush in close proximity to the town centre, rolling hills and a nice harbour, and the Marlborough Sounds is my idea of paradise.” Gary and Nikki replace Lynne and Gordon Neilson, who founded Tombstone in 2006.

Community Resilience and Good Ageing

Building community resilience so people can look after themselves and each other is a priority for Council, says Mayor Alistair Sowman. And he says a recently completed research project, Community Resilience and Good Ageing: Doing Better in Bad Times, will help Council and community agencies in their planning for older people in severe floods, storms and earthquakes. Marlborough groups including the Council’s Older Persons Forum played a big part in the research, sharing

their experiences of recent floods. From these real-life examples, the researchers have created practical tools (checklists) to help people work out risks when buying a house site, building or renovating, and to improve organisational responses to help people recover. The two-year research programme, led by the Centre for Research, Evaluation and Social Assessment (CRESA), has the Mayor Alistair Sowman with community representatives checklists available for free on Linnette Mortlock (Access and Mobility Forum) and John www.resilience.goodhomes. Craighead (Older Persons Forum). co.nz

Cutting down the waste

We’re still working on ways to extend recycling including research into where and how services might be extended in future. We’ve now finished a five-month trial where a recycling container has been available to the communities of Tua Marina, Rarangi, Spring Creek, Grovetown and Renwick, hosted by the local schools. We’re compiling the feedback and analysis of this trial and will report back to Council in November. In the meantime we have secured funding from the Public Place Recycling Scheme to offer a further service with containers taking plastics, cans, glass and card/paper. The bins will be ready

later this month and sited in Renwick and Grovetown initially. Meantime, Second-Hand Sunday went well and it seems people were quick to snap up the giveaways. More than 30 people registered so they could be part of the free advertising. The feedback on the trial event will be reported back to Council in November 2014.

We’ll think about holding another Second Hand Sunday toward the end of summer. Anyone with stuff they didn’t get around to disposing of? Give it to a charity shop or drop off at the Re-Use Shop at the Resource Recovery Centre at the end of Wither Road. Opening hours: 8.00 am-4.30 pm Monday to Friday and 10.00 am-4.00 pm at the weekend. Enquiries to the Re-Use Shop, Ph: 03 578 7917. Rolling out new playing fields at Lansdowne Park

The heavy earth-moving machinery is hard at work, smoothing out the land over the northern stopbank of Lansdowne Park making way for a softball park. Old greenwaste from years of

cropping has been removed and river silts have been cut out and stockpiled. The subsurface is being re-levelled at the moment. Once this is complete river silts will be re-laid and a seed bed created. Grass will be sown in November before work can commence on the development of the softball diamond and facilities. The Council’s concept plans for the 13-hectare park show how it could become a multi-sport complex for the district. www.marlborough.

Q A Church turns 150 Q

Vince Smith and Father Pat McIndoe outside St Mary’s Church.

By Adam Poulopoulos A Marlborough church is inviting members past and present from around the country to celebrate 150 years in existence. St Mary’s Catholic Parish, on Maxwell Road, will be having a weekend of celebrations, beginning on Friday, October 24. The official opening, on the Saturday at 1pm, will feature speeches from people including Catholic Archbishop John Dew, deputy mayor Terry Sloan, acting parish priest, Father Pat McIndoe, and organisation committee chairman Vince Smith. The festivities will include food stalls, a pageant depicting period costumes and a collection of displayed memorabilia. During the weekend fourteen ‘stations of the cross,’ artistic representations of Christ carrying the cross

to the Crucifixion, will be blessed. The depictions, by local artist Jim Davis, have the names of all those baptised in the parish carved into them. Those baptised in the parish were remembered at masses last Sunday. Masses for the deceased and the married will be held during the next two Sundays. Mr Smith said the celebrations were a way of reminiscing about old times. “We’re all pretty excited. There are a number of people registered from outside the district – priests, nuns and ex-parishioners.” “We trust they enjoy themselves and it brings back memories for them.” The celebrations conclude with a barbecue following Mass on Sunday, October 26.

One of my best holidays was... Summer holidays as a kid at Kuratau on Lake Taupo at my Grandparents house with all the cousins. I have the best memories from those holidays. My guilty TV pleasure is... X factor. I normally hate those sort of shows but my daughters are fans and now I’m hooked this season too. I’m inspired by...

The people I work with! Everyday they are enthusiastic, fun, positive and passionate about what they do.

What’s one thing that you’ll never throw away? Photos, (and photo frames according to my husband). Who would you love to have a meal with?

A

My sisters... they make me laugh more than anyone and I don’t see them anywhere near as much as I would like.

Q A Q

What would you spend your last $100 on?

A

Probably coffee.

What’s next on your wish list?

Q

There’s some amazing things happening at work so at the moment I am focused to putting those in place. In the future my aim is to keep growing my role within Cityfitness.

What is the one thing Sun readers would be surprised to know about you?

A

I’m ridiculously impatient, or a ‘rush pants’ as I get called at home.

Shanghai to London Rally Noeline’s blog Leaving Tallinn Sunday 15th June.

meet the others on the top floor of the hotel for a cocktail and an amazing view over the city. This area is worthy of a return visit.

Tallinn is a place that we will not forget, and nor will the Peugeot. We stayed right across the road from where the Queen and Prince Harry stayed - couldn’t go in, but took photos. Really, anyone can say anything and out come the cameras! We all waited at the hotel for Ron and Gregg to pick up the rental. This proved to be a nightmare due to changes in area and zones for rental car companies, but Avis came to the party. At one stage we thought we might just finish the tour and go home, but we’re so glad we carried on. Tony in the Daimler led the group out of Tallinn while Jimmy and Greg took the Peugeot over to Helsinki - they were to catch up with us that night. We were late leaving Tallinn but got on the road by 11. We had all the bells and whistles in the Skoda, but it didn’t feel right, so we put a few stickers on the car so we could feel part of the tour. We can confirm however that vehicle technology has improved immensely over the last 47 years! We arrived into Riga and stayed at the Radisson. It was another large hotel with a long walk to our room. We visited Riga Central Market which is the largest open market in Europe. It consists of four main pavilions (meat, fish, vegetable and dairy). The pavilions are airship hangers left over by the Germans after World War II. The food and stalls were amazing - would have loved to have bought a basket full of food - but did buy some strawberries that were the size of a small apple and just melted in your mouth. Found yet another quaint cafe just as the sun was going down. It was getting cold, so along with Wes, Silvia, Brenda, and Allan we found a table and the waitress brought out blankets. We didn’t quite know if we should wrap ourselves in them, but that is what the locals were doing - so ‘when in Rome’.. I had beef stroganoff and cottage pie plus mulled wine. Just what you need on a cool evening! After dinner we walked back to the hotel to

Fact - the Latvian flag is one of the oldest in the world, dating all the way back to the 13th century. It is said to have originated when a Latvian chief was wrapped in a white sheet after being wounded in battle and the sides of the sheet became stained with blood, while the central stripe remained white. The stained sheet was used as a battle flag. You know those rivets on your jeans? We have got a Latvian to thank for it. Jacob Davis partnered with Levi Strauss to bring his invention to the denim-clad masses.

The spectacular view from our hotel roof

The following morning we stayed back with Silvia and Wes as Silvia’s family comes from there and she was keen to visit a few places. We drove out to the beach where her mum used to play - lots of photos, etc - had another beautiful lunch - then back on the road to catch up with the group. Heading to Vilnius we were travelling along at a good speed. Going around a roundabout, a woman driver decided to change her mind and turned left in front of us and bang she hit the right front of our car. Ron tried to steer to the left and the VW behind had to also take evasive action. The rest of the group carried on while we caught up with the other driver. The Police were called. Wes and I talked with the woman and were able to take photos of her licence in case we needed it. Ron was negotiating with police with hands waving and drawing pictures - language was certainly an issue - then all of a sudden the policeman pointed to Ron and said, “you pay cash now!” All of a sudden his English was very clear! Ron asked the policeman for a ticket - he wasn’t too happy with that - but in the end we got it. Wes took photos of Ron handing over the cash. All smiles, in the car and off we all go. What an exercise! Ron was convinced he was guilty, no matter what, so now he has a ticket and police record in Poland! We arrived in Warsaw very late, but wiser for the experience.

Rotavirus presence Rotavirus gastroenteritis , a highly infectious virus of the gut, is something that 90 percent of New Zealand will develop by the age of three-years. Marlborough health professionals advise that it’s not uncommon to see cases of it this time of year, but in recent weeks Rotavirus has made its presence known throughout the region. One Renwick mother told the Sun her 21 month old daughter had recently been confirmed as having Rotavirus, another said her two-year old son was treated for high fevers and dehydration, while a third Renwick mother had her son hospitalised last weekend. The Sun contacted local medical centres, the Marlborough PHO and the Nelson Marlborough District Health board to ask if there had been a large outbreak, but none had been reported. “There is Rotavirus about and we have had some cases recently, but it’s not unusual for this time of year,” a Redwoodtown Medical Centre spokesperson said. Rotavirus symptoms can range from a short period of mild, watery diarrhoea to severe, dehydrating diarrhoea with vomiting, fever and shock. Rotavirus can lead to severe dehydration that can be fatal if not treated, visit or contact your GP if you have concerns. Immunisation is availalble free in NZ for babies at their six week, three month and five month immunisations. A large Rotavirus outbreak was reported in Wellington last month, also affecting a number of childhood centres.

105 MIDDLE RENWICK RD, BLENHEIM

Vege gastro illness reported The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board has had one unconfirmed case of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis notified to Public Health. Medical Officer of Health Dr Andrew Lindsay said Yersinia pseudotuberculosis causes stomach cramps and can present symptoms that mimic appendicitis. Diarrhoea can occur but is rare. It has a three to 21 day incubation period. “The Ministry for Primary Industries is working to determine the source of the outbreak. Y. pseudotuberculosis has many potential animal reservoirs, and person to person spread is uncommon,” he said. Outbreaks of Y. pseudotuberculosis are not common, and have been associated with the consumption of fresh vegetable produce in previous outbreaks. Please apply normal food safety practice. If it looks off or smells off, throw it out. Otherwise keep fresh food chilled and wash fruit and vegetables before eating. See your doctor, or call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for advice if you think you might have symptoms.

There’s been a lot of talk in the media about so-called Zombie Towns and the death of small town New Zealand. Havelock is determined not to be one of them. Tired of seeing businesses close and leave behind empty shop windows, four local women came together and decided to do something to stop people just driving through, and to entice them to stop and spend time in Havelock. Jo Downey, Lisa Clem, Liz Matthews and Lorain Day have banded together to tell the world that yes, Havelock is still the gateway to the Marlborough Sounds and proud greentip mussel capital, but it’s so much more than that. “The area’s big secret is just how many clever, talented, creative people live and work here – painters, sculptors, ceramic artists, photographers, wood artists, bone carvers. But all those cars that don’t stop have no idea,” Jo said. Jo decided it was time to action a

plan she had for years to open the Gallery Havelock. Immediately there was a lot of support and with her team, supportive landlords, the ever-willing chaps at the Havelock Menzshed and lots of clever, hardworking and skilful helpers in the community, the Gallery Havelock was born. It will open its doors on October 18 at 60 Main Road, and will provide a gallery environment for the display and sale of locally created artwork by a select group of local artists, artcourses, work and display experience for secondary school students. It will also provide a vital and colourful venue for publishing events, book launches and national author encounters, with profits donated back to the community. “We invite everyone to come and see for themselves, find out more about this innovative, exciting and proactive project by talking to one of our representatives and even better, come to our opening,” Jo said. death notices

Final in Blenheim? The Tasman Makos’ last roundrobin game this weekend could set in motion a sequence of events that sees the ITM Premiership final played to Blenheim this year. Last year’s ITM Championship final was in Nelson, and Blenheim and Nelson have an agreement that sees the final rotated year-on-year. The final makeup of the table will be decided when current leaders Taranaki play Canterbury at 2:30pm on Sunday, with secondplaced Tasman and Counties at 4:30pm at Lansdowne Park. For Blenheim to have any chance of hosting the final Tasman has to win their guaranteed home semifinal, which is being played at Trafalgar Park in Nelson next weekend.

Burgess the bold/brilliant/bonkers Before I get on to the main thread a rugby union matter must be addressed. I can’t speak for others, but the origin of the terminology ‘first-five-eighth’ and ‘second fiveeighth’ has always baffled me. Why don’t we call them ‘fly half’ and ‘inside centre’ like everyone else? So when the question got bandied around over a glass of wine I made a note to figure it out. The best explanation I could find for this is: The halfback (0.5, if you will), and fullback (1) start and end the backline, so the other positions should fit within that spectrum.

The centre and wings are actually known as ‘centre threequarter’ and ‘wing three-quarters (0.75) so numbers 10 and 12 must be between 0.5 and 0.75. As a result, they are known as the ‘five-eighths’ (0.625). Still a strange system but anyway… moving on to league. Sam Burgess – what a Herculean performance over the weekend. After fracturing a cheekbone in the first tackle of the NRL Grand Final, he went on to play the entire game, and won the Clive Churchill Medal for man of the match. The English colossus now leaves rugby league to take up a union

contract, with the tears he shed on the field immortalised as one of the game’s defining images. In the aftermath questions have been asked – did playing on pose any long-term risk? How do physios make the judgement call? Apparently, Burgess’s cheekbone was in no real danger of further damage, but surely there was an increased risk – it was a mad decision to let him play on. While the episode might not be what we recommend our children do in the same situation, it’s hard not to admire Burgess’s courage and bloody-mindedness.

Basketball tournament coming to Marlborough By Adam Poulopoulos Teams from around the top half of the South Island will shortly be bouncing into Blenheim for the Under 13 Mainland Basketball Tournament. Marlborough will field teams in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions at the tournament, to be held at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000. Teams from the Canterbury region, Nelson and the West Coast will be competing, with eight registered in each division.

The tournament begins on Friday, October 17 and continues through the weekend, with finals to be held on Sunday, October 19. Boys’ team manager Mel Morris said her side came together in May, and was now training hard in preparation for the tournament. She said they competed at a tournament on the West Coast earlier in the year, with mixed results. Right: The Marlborough captains, Emily Overend and Max Morris.

Arotea uncovering the past By Adam Poulopoulos A famous old hockey club is looking to piece together the jigsaw of their 105-year history before their anniversary celebrations later in the year. The Arotea Hockey Club, formerly based in Tuamarina, celebrates 105 years with a function on Saturday, November 8 at the Grovetown Hotel. In the meantime, the club is asking for any documents, artefacts or general information from anyone who can provide it. Arotea, originally a women’s club, was formed alongside men’s club Kiwi, before they amalgamated in 1988. Club member Pip Forsyth said the journey of discovery has already begun for both Arotea and Kiwi. “We’re looking to see as much history as possible and have

a night celebrating how both clubs have been in Marlborough for over 100 years. “We’re uncovering all sorts of things as we go along.” Club president Emma Mills said members regretted not collating the history for their 100th birthday. “In those five years a lot of people who held keys to this information died. “Now we’re trying to piece it all together.” Already, artefacts including old hockey balls and sticks have been retrieved. Former member Robin Robinson, who has been tasked with making a display for the evening, said she found a badge thought to be the club’s original insignia. “It was just laying among a lot of old jewellery. I picked up an old photograph

and saw what it was for.” The club now plays its games in Blenheim, but in years past players were known to arrive at Tua Marina School, the club’s old home base, on bikes or horses. The clubs have distinct ancestral links, with several generations of the same families represented. Arotea in particular has provided many New Zealand representatives.

Pigeon results By Alister Cooper Considering the forecast for inclement weather on Sat, October 4, the racing pigeons of the Blenheim Racing Pigeon Club quite literally ‘flew’ home from their liberation at Christchurch because the birds were clocking

over 90 kilometres an hour on average for the 244 km journey home. Once again the Spring Creek area took the winning three positions, with Shirley Morrison’s chequer hen 176 taking first place by a whisker from husband

Donald’s two-year-old chequer hen 110 with only a decimal point separating their very fast velocities of 1515 metres per minute. Great effort when you consider those two birds raced home neckand-neck for two hours and 41 minutes and landed at their

respective lofts at the same split second! Young Sindy Kirkwood also had a fine race and again only a second or two behind the other two, with her bird No. 83 recording 1512.68 mpm.
