Water woes Mayor pleased with Seddon water decision after tense public meeting

Mayor Alistair Sowman.

By Adam Poulopoulos The Marlborough District Council’s water subsidy application for Seddon has been backed by its residents, but not all the community is happy with the decision. About 80 Seddon locals attended a confrontational meeting at the Awatere Memorial Hall on Monday night. The meeting was held to discuss council’s application for government funds to go towards a centralised membrane filtration system. Continued page 2.

Friendly pig passes away By Adam Poulopoulos A pig who entertained crowds of Marlburians for 13 years had to be put down recently. The late Pig Pig and his friend Rosie attracted crowds of visitors to Phil and Cheryl Sowman’s Swamp Road property for many years. The vet examining Pig Pig had never seen a wild pig live so long, but said the boar was likely to lose the use of his back legs. As that happened he was humanely put down, on Tuesday last week. When Phil and Cheryl’s son Brad found Pig Pig in 2001, he was barely a week old and was the size of a small cat. After he was domesticated he attracted a diverse range of visitors to feed him, from children to families to retirement village parties. Phil said Pig Pig’s uniqueness attracted people. “The family would ask the kids what they

wanted to do in the weekend – they thought they’d want to go to Picton or the aquatic centre but often they’d end up here feeding the pigs. “There’s hardly any farm animals left in Marlborough now, so people would come by weekly.” Pig Pig had his fair share of escapades, once making a solo trip to Dillon’s Point. On another occasion, the family had a boat to sell in their backyard, and Phil said when the to-be owners came to do measurements, they got a rude shock. “He came down and surrounded them. They yelled out for help – they couldn’t get out of the boat. “They didn’t know he was tame.” Cheryl said the family was letting people know about what had happened. “We’re not looking for a new companion for Rosie. We’re just telling people Pig Pig’s gone.” Pig Pig, a well known boar has passed away.

Continued from page 1. The funds are being distributed in the final round of the Capital Assistance Programme, which supplies $10 million per year in grants nationwide. The meeting was attended by the Seddon/Awatere Water Committee and representatives from council, the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board and engineering consultancy Beca. The application will not address Seddon’s rural properties, which are already fitted with individual purification devices. Mayor Alistair Sowman said he was happy with the decision. “It’s very clear this community wants a fresh water system. “It’s our top priority. We’ll work to get the best system at the cheapest price.” A majority voted for the application, but council assets and services manager Mark Wheeler said until it was made, council had the chance to amend it to include a different purification system, or scrap it altogether, depending on further cost analysis. Resident Adam Neilsen disagrees with council’s plans, and has founded the Seddon Water Action Group, who voted against the application. He said the group was not planning to vote no, but did so after a group of seasonal workers arrived at

the meeting. He said the workers arrived with their boss Carl Jackson, also a Seddon Water Committee member, in an attempt to force an affirmative vote for the subsidy. “I think most people here are pretty disgusted. “If that happened in a rural community, there’d be a rebellion.” Mr Neilsen said the workers left the meeting before

the vote could be taken. Mr Jackson said he had acted to inform his workers, who were both members of the community and consumers of the water, and didn’t intend to upset anybody. Mr Neilsen formed SWAG, in part due to having left the Seddon Water Committee, who were reluctant to consider options besides the membrane system. He said membrane technology required chemicals to clean the water and the system, and instead suggested the Homespring point-of-entry units with an added filter, a method requiring no chemicals at a cheaper price. Beca water supply technical director Andrew Watson said if a series of units were placed in a central area they would be considered. Preliminary calculations suggest 26 Homespring units would be required to service the 248 homes in question. Council has until February 27 to get the application to the Ministry of Health, and Seddon will know by August next year if they have a grant. Seddon’s water is currently treated by chlorination, which fails if the water becomes dirty. Seddon’s household tap water currently has an indefinite boil notice.

Marlborough Mayor despairs at ferry disruptions Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman says the on-going disruptions to the Cook Strait ferry service undermines top-of-the-south tourism and is a continuing source of concern for the South Island economy. Mr Sowman says it’s time for a serious review of the Interislander service by central government.

“New Zealanders are getting suspicious about this long-running saga of breakdowns and patch-ups to the ships and service – we want to know that there is a reliable inter-island link and that the government is committed to maintaining that link.” Freight movement between the islands was delayed every time the ferry schedule was

Both Maritime New Zealand and the ship’s classification society are satisfied the vessels has been repaired to the appropriate standard and have given them approval to sail. FORMER PRIEST DISCHARGED WITHOUT CONVICTION Former St Mary’s parish priest father Alastair Aidan Kay was discharged without conviction on a charge of indecent assault against a 17-year-old male. Kay, 71, appeared in the Blenheim District Court on Monday for sentencing after admitting to the act in September. The act committed was described by Judge Bruce Davison as being ‘fairly low level’ made worse by the substantial breach of trust of the victim, his family and the church community. Kay was ordered to pay the victim $1500 in emotional harm reparations.

By Adam Poulopoulos A Marlborough early childhood centre is preparing to celebrate 20 years with a party and open house later this week. Montessori House of Children Blenheim will be having a concert and shared lunch for children and families at the centre on Friday from 11.30am. A time capsule with a school photo and the children’s selfportraits among other things will be buried on the day, to be opened 20 years from now. On Saturday an open house will be held from 11am-3pm. Rose Montgomery founded the centre with husband Matthew after moving from Auckland. She said she was delighted Montessori had reached 20 years. “It’s fantastic. It’s been wonderful to see the development of each child through the school. “Now the first children who started here are going on to their careers and into the community.”

Radio operators recognised

Recently Marlborough Marine Radio Association Operators travelled to Wellington from Picton to look over the Rescue Coordination Centre and maritime operations in Avalon. Over lunch Maritime New Zealand safety and response general manager Nigel Clifford presented certificates to Joan Henson and Robert Wardhaugh, as both have completed 15 years of service to the Association as VHF marine radio operators. Marlborough Marine Radio operates five VHF marine channels within the Marlborough Sounds and Cook Strait, providing boat-to-boat communication as well as operator monitoring on four of the channels. There are seven radio operators who take turns monitoring the channels from 7am – 10pm each day providing weather forecasts, navigation warnings, taking trip reports and providing general information as requested. At the presentation Nigel Clifford said Maritime New Zealand considers

Marlborough Marine Radio an integral part of the marine radio network for safety services within New Zealand. He commended the organisation for the strong contribution it made to the overall maritime distress and safety communications system within the sounds area. Marlborough Marine Radio Association president Peter Broad said without the support of Interislander, the trip would not have been possible. “We certainly appreciate the support of the Interislander in making this training and familiarisation trip possible, and having Nigel Clifford recognise the long service of Joan and Robert was a highlight for our hard-working volunteer radio operators”. Porse House strengthened After recent work Porse House has been seismically strengthened, and vacant spaces in the building are now up for lease. The building, at 1 Market Street, is at 70 percent of the standard outlined by the 2004 Building Act. The act states multi-storied buildings must attain 34 percent of the standard. Sid Doecke of Harcourts is dealing with the vacant spaces. The former Air Training Corps site at Omaka will be restored and filled with WWII memorabilia.

Working war camp coming to Marlborough Marlburians and tourists alike will get to experience a little of what the Second World War was like when the country’s only working WWII military camp is formed. Historical preservation group The Garrison Society recently acquired the former Air Training Corps site at Omaka, and plans to restore and fill it with WWII memorabilia. Once up and running the camp will house a museum wing, operational communications room, workshop, library, research facility, period offices, formal functions lounge and kitchen. The grounds will be home to military

huts, replica shelters, guard house, memorial area, a parade ground and landscaping. Military shows will be able to be held on the grounds, and areas for pitching tents and parking vehicles will be made part of the camp layout. With the building heavily vandalised, restoration work has already begun, and The Garrison hope to house re-enactors for the Classic Fighters Airshow on Easter Weekend. No date has been set for completion. The society’s commanding officer Adam North said they acquired the building on October 24, but he had been trying to take possession of it since the Air Training

Corps left nearly a decade ago. He said The Garrison ‘Phantom Camp’ would become the group’s national headquarters, and would endeavour to show what life was like. “During WWII there were a number of camps, stations and military outposts around Marlborough and the rest of the country. “We will do our utmost to show the public what could be seen on a camp at that time.” He said depending on grants and funding, they hoped to at least have water and power within the next 12 months. The society’s fundraising drive is due to begin shortly.

New dux looks to future Piers Landon-Lane was announced as the Marlborough Boys’ College dux last week. He spoke to Adam Poulopoulos about his achievement and his plans for the years ahead. Five years of hard graft paid off for Piers Landon-Lane last Wednesday afternoon when he was named his school’s top academic. “I was elated. My heart was pumping,” he said. “All the hard work sort of paid off. I finally got what I was aiming for.” Piers was named top student in chemistry, biology, statistics and accounting, and won awards for the best overall student in science and maths, but much of his motivation came from an unlikely source. It is actually the second time in three years a LandonLane has been named MBC dux – Piers’s brother Leatham won the award back in 2012. “I can’t remember the first time I thought about aiming for dux, but it was definitely since my brother got it,” Piers said. “I didn’t want to be worse than him.” The similarities between the two don’t stop there. Leatham has spent two years studying engineering at the University of Canterbury and Piers intends to follow in his footsteps next year. He has just begun a stretch which features five NCEA Level 3 exams and four scholarship exams, but he said leaving day-to-day school life behind was a strange feeling. “It hasn’t really sunk in that it’s the end of school and I don’t have to go to classes any more.” As well as being MBC’s academic prefect, Piers represented the school’s first XI cricket team. He was also involved with the Leos Club, which helps with community projects like tree plantings, delivering phonebooks and serving food at John’s Kitchen, for his entire college life. “Being part of it for all five years was special. I feel like I made a significant contribution to the community,” he said. “It warms your heart to put a smile on people’s faces in the community.” The youngest of three children, Piers was born in Marlborough after his parents moved from Grey Lynn in Auckland two decades ago.

He said he was happy to have spent his childhood here. “I’m glad I grew up in Marlborough. Auckland probably wouldn’t have been very good for me. “I love the relaxed style in the country, the weather’s very good and there’s lots of sporting opportunities. “I very much enjoyed the schools too – Renwick School and Marlborough Boys’.” He hopes to be studying electrical engineering in Christchurch, researching the importance of electrical technology, and how to improve the efficiency of machinery and vehicles in the future. He said electrical, along with chemical and mechanical

engineering, were all important factors in mankind’s future. “I find it interesting. I see it as the way forward to get away from the fossil-fuelled world we live in. “Fossil fuels are a double-pronged problem. The fact they’re running out and becoming more expensive and the climate change aspect.” Before Piers departs he expects to spend his summer working, possibly on the Waihopai Valley vineyard the family has run since coming here, and playing for Renwick’s senior cricket team.

CELEBRATE THE FESTIVE SEASON WITH YOUR FRIENDS AT

Banoffee Pie.

Cortado

If you ask one of Cortado Restaurant and Café’s customers what was pleasurable about their dining experience, what do you think they will say? Great food? Prompt and friendly service? They will say many great things about the food and service but most importantly they will say; “We were made to feel welcome.” Manager Diogo Almeida and his staff have one motto they work to, and that is to ‘work happy and treat our customers the best we can’. “We love our customers, it’s their support that drives us so in return we do everything we can to make their dining experiences memorable,” he says. Picton’s Cortado Restaurant and Café is a partnership between owners Marisa Friedrich, Nick Johnstone and manager Diogo. Since November 2009 when they took over the business they have worked hard to build on its previous success. This has included maintaining a loyal team of staff, as well as continuing to improve their highly popular menu which boasts of tantilising South American flavours. It’s not just the menu that adds to Cortado Restaurant and Café’s international flavour, it’s also staff. “We have staff from England, Brazil, Chile, Fiji, Argentina, India and of

course some kiwis,” says Nick. “This adds to our uniqueness and our staff’s personalities really adds something special to what we are all about,” Marisa adds. Every customer is greeted with a cheerful smile and encouraged to sit, relax and enjoy the menu. Cortado Restaurant and Café is a hugely popular location for locals and tourists as it is open from 8am till late, and offers breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. Beginning next Monday will be an exciting new summer menu, which is simply a number of new additions to the already popular menu. There will be an emphasis on New Zealand and Marlborough seafood, crispy skin duck dishes as well as some wild meat additions including venison. Complimenting the menu is Cortado Restaurant and Café’s extensive wine list which strongly features Marlborough wines, as well as craft beers and the Macs range on tap. Also set to be introduced will be a number of new cocktails which will compliment the already famous ‘Green Hornet’, the ‘Cortado Bloody Mary’ and the ‘Cortado Mojito’. Dine inside or outside overlooking the water. Cortado Restaurant and Café is open seven days.

Insect screens for windows and doors Keep pests out, let the fresh air in.

Call in the experts to prevent or solve rodent invasions.

Rodent problems Through the summer months the natural population of rats and mice rises as they have increasing quantities of food such as fruits, nuts and grains are available to them. All too often they find food and shelter by joining us in our homes, offices, shops and factories. Also all too often we don’t do anything about this inevitable invasion until they have moved in, set up home and begin to raid the kitchen. Rats and mice are well known to gnaw on cables

causing short circuits, pipes causing floods, eating our food causing health risks, and causing consternation to those with a natural fear of rodents. Now is the time to prepare for and prevent rats and mice moving indoors to live with you. While you can do your best to stop rats and mice finding a way into your home or building, the best option would be to call in a professional pest control company which can assess your home and help solve your rodent problems.

Harmful spiders Most spiders in New Zealand are harmless, but the redback and white-tailed spiders can be harmful and should be avoided.

Redback spiders Redbacks will only bite when disturbed or trapped in clothing, and bites are rare. The bite feels like a sharp pain similar to a pinprick. The bite may lead to localised redness, pain and sweating. Occasionally the pain and sweating may spread and stomach pain may occur. Aches in muscles and joints, nausea and vomiting, and increased heart rate and blood pressure can result.

White-tailed spider The usual white-tailed spider bite can be painful but the initial burning feeling, swelling, redness and itchiness at the bite site usually goes and there are no long-lasting effects. White-tailed spider bites are not considered poisonous to humans. A recent Australian study has

shown no evidence linking necrotic ulcers (destroyed skin) to white-tailed spider bites. What to do if you think you have been bitten by a white-tailed spider If you suspect you have been bitten by a white-tailed spider only simple first aid is necessary, as with any puncturing of the skin, as these spiders do not cause skin damage or ulcers: • Clean the bite area with antiseptic or warm soapy water • Place ice on the bite (not directly onto the skin) to reduce any pain or swelling. • For any suspected spider bite, see a doctor if the bite area becomes very red or painful, blisters, appears infected, or forms an ulcer. What to do if you think you have been bitten by a redback spider If you suspect you have been bitten by a redback spider you need to seek urgent medical attention at your nearest hospital, medical centre or doctor.

MagicSeal has a range of screening solutions for all situations for windows and doors to help you control household pests in an environmentally friendly way.

The redback and white-tailed spiders can be harmful.

Even if you do not immediately experience symptoms beyond the ‘pin prick’ of the bite you still need medical advice.

Don’t get stung, call the professionals New Zealand has some of the highest densities of German and common wasps in the world. This is because they have no natural predators here, our winters are mild and there is plenty of food for them. It’s no fun being stung by a wasp, the venom from a wasp sting contains several toxins that can cause a hypersensitive or allergic reaction in

some people. The best way to reduce a local wasp population is to find and destroy all the nests in the area. Usually wasps fly no further than 200 metres, so you should aim to kill all the nests within this range. Rather than attempt at destoying the nests yourself and risk being attacked, call in a professional pest control company to do it safely.

Pest Control Operation Tennyson Inlet – Mt Stanley As part of the Battle for Our Birds campaign to control rats and protect native wildlife, the Department of Conservation intends to apply cereal baits containing sodium fluoroacetate (1080) by helicopter over the following area of public conservation land. Bait distribution should take less than one day to complete and the toxic phase is planned to commence on or after 13 November 2014.

Description of the area

Approximately 4,000 hectares of public conservation land centred on Mt Stanley in the Tennyson Inlet Scenic Reserve; Nydia Bay Scenic Reserve, Chance, Penguin & Fairy Bay Scenic Reserve in the Marlborough Sounds. Method of control

Cereal baits containing the pesticide will be distributed by helicopter over the above area. The toxic baits are cylindrical pellets approximately 16mm in diameter, dyed green and contain cinnamon. Marlborough RDA staff off to LA By Adam Poulopoulos Two s t a f f m e m b e r s a t Marlborough Riding for the Disabled are off overseas with the New Zealand Special Olympics team next year. Amanda Trueman will be travelling to Los Angeles for the Special Olympics World Games, to be held from July 25 to August 2. Amanda will be coaching three equestrian athletes, Chelsea Thorn, Pratima Patel and Nickolas Taris, all from the North Island. Blenheim RDA manager Roslein Wilkes will also be travelling with the team, as an assistant technical delegate. It is Amanda’s second Olympics, after she travelled with the team to Athens for the 2011 event. She said the experience was always rewarding. “I like getting to give athletes the opportunity to do something they wouldn’t ordinarily do. “You meet some really good people, coaches and athletes alike, and everyone is there to help someone else.” The team leaves in mid July to acclimatise before the games. They will spend the first week at Long Beach University before being put up in one of the towns or suburbs surrounding Los Angeles. Amanda started coaching intellectually disabled athletes about a decade ago, and said coaching

Queen Charlotte Yacht Club sailor Jack Cowley has got off to an outstanding start this season, winning the open gold fleet at a recent meet. Jack was top of 104 open gold fleet sailors at the first New Zealand International Optimist Dinghy Association ranking regatta of the season. The regatta was held in Taupo last weekend. Jack Tripe was 17th in the same division, with Jasper Hopkins 46th. For QCYC, it was a double cause for celebration, as Max Gibbs claimed top spot in the 11-boat starling division. Overall, 12 QCYC sailors
