More fees as car parking prices to change For the first time in eight years, the Marlborough District Council is recommending changes to car parking charges in Blenheim. The widespread changes include several changes to payand-display parking. Council will convert free and timerestricted parking in and around the CBD, and off-street parking, to pay-and-display at $1 an hour. All-day parking is to be made available at all pay-and-display carparks, at $4 a day. Under the proposal there are still half a dozen sites where free parking would remain. Council will also raise kerbside parking charges to $1.50 an hour, but offer free parking in CBD off-street car parks on Saturday mornings. The free off-street parking is set to begin from this December, but all other changes would not be introduced until March, and

will be discussed before then. Currently, car parking is partly subsided by general rates at about $150,000 a year, a situation councillors want to eliminate. Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman said car parking should

be paid for by users, not funded from rates. The increased rate of $1.50 an hour for kerbside parking was to encourage regular turnover, while also encouraging people to use the off-street parks where the hourly rate was lower.

Council’s car parking account is running at a deficit of $300,000 per annum, partly because there has been no increase in parking fees for a long period, and also because the account funded the purchase of 2 High Street, currently used for parking. Councillors agree the site should be funded from a council reserve, and the parking account reimbursed. Councillors were advised with that change and the other alterations, the council parking account should reach a breakeven point in about two years. Information on Picton’s parking changes can be found on page 3.  What would you like to see with regard to parking charges? Email news@blenheimsun.co.nz and let us know.

Raelene enjoys lifestyle change Continued from page 1. Her move came after eight years in the Royal New Zealand Navy, including four as a physical training instructor, at Devonport in Auckland. She said her new lifestyle and surroundings could not be any more different. “I wanted a different perspective, and to get away from Auckland. “Now I can bike to work every day and not worry about being hit by a car.” Since arriving in Marlborough, Raelene has “been a bit of a tourist,” mountain biking around the Wither Hills, visiting Kaiteriteri and sampling the local wine. “It’s awesome. It’s kind of like an adventure playground,” she said. “The people are really nice. People in Auckland are really stressed

out but here it’s a different pace.” Raelene hopes to walk and kayak both the Queen Charlotte Track and the Abel Tasman Track in the near future. She said she enjoyed being free of the military lifestyle, but also missed aspects of it. “In the military it is so strict – there are so many rules and regulations to abide by. “I feel like I have so much freedom. I don’t have to fill out a request form every time I want to do something. “I do miss the routine and the atmosphere. It’s a really tight-knit community.” Raelene is on a year’s unpaid leave from the military, and hopes to get a posting at Woodbourne when it finishes.

Council backs sugar ban A move away from the sale or supply of sugar-sweetened beverages at council venues or council-sponsored events has won council backing. A majority of councillors agreed council staff should go ahead and develop a policy which a future council meeting would consider. It’s a move which picks up on a policy established by the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board and adopted by the Nelson City Council this year. The proposal addresses any sugarsweetened drinks, including some sports drinks. Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman proposed council follow the example and be a good role model within the community by minimising the availability of sweetened drinks. NMDHB principal dental officer Dr Rob Beaglehole told councillors he’d dealt with about 100 Marlborough children who had teeth extracted due to decay over the last year. He said many New Zealand children were taking in ten times the amount of sugar recommended by the World Health Organisation, with 45per cent of five-year olds showing

signs of tooth decay and obesity and type two diabetes also rising. Mr Sowman said images of decay, and stories including parents putting coke in a baby’s bottle, were shocking. “We realise education and parental responsibility are part of the solution, but most councillors also felt council could help by making the healthy choice the easy choice for children and parents.” Council staff would look into the situation in Nelson where a water truck is provided at council-led events, partly funded by council, the NMDHB and Sport Tasman. Discussion will be required with commercial tenants at councilowned venues, food stalls holding concessions from the council and volunteer groups which participated in council-sponsored events. It is also proposed sweetened drinks should not be made available for sale within the council workplace.  What do you think should be done about the sale of sugarsweetened drinks in Blenheim? Email news@blenheimsun.co.nz and let us know what you think.

PICTON PARKING CHANGES Councillors have agreed increased parking charges should be introduced to try and manage the summer season pressure on car parking space in Picton. The changes include the maximum parking period on the Picton Foreshore being reduced from four hours to two hours, while the parking price at the Coathanger Bridge car park will be raised. The changes will take effect from December 15.

LOGO SEARCH

Mayor Alistair Sowman supports the proposal that will see sweetened drinks banned from council-run events.

Over Christmas she will be making small changes to the décor and the menu. For Fran, she said stepping away meant the chance to enjoy an extended Christmas break. She said she was looking forward to leaving the 12-hour days behind. “I’ve done my thing. It’s time to move on and let someone else have a go.” Fran said she was thankful for her customers, and for the parting gifts she was given on Monday. She said she would look for new employment after the holiday season. Vikki Rodger, the new owner of The Fix Cafe.

Credits roll for Oscars, movies up for grabs By Adam Poulopoulos The locally-owned Oscars Video Store is closing down, and the owners are offering movie lovers an opportunity to get hold of some of their stock with a clearance sale. All movies and movie racks at the 114 Scott Street store are up for sale. While no end date has been set, the sale is likely to continue for the next couple of weeks. Owner Dawn Hart bought the store in 2008 for her partner, who was a movie buff. She and daughter Marie have been running it for the last few years. Marie said the pair was looking forward to some time out. “Neither of us are really movie enthusiasts, and mum wants to get back to doing her sewing. “There are two of us, so we go to work for long hours and there’s not much return

We get a lot of elderly people who are so excited to watch a movie they saw when they were younger. “The same people will stand here and chat for half an hour.” While the rise of downloading has hindered business Marie said dropping prices to match the competition was also a factor in the store’s closure. “Entertainment is almost a luxury now. For a lot of families $10 to watch a movie isn’t in their budget. “We still get people who watch a movie Marie Hart with some of the movies for sale. online, then come in and say it was bad quality and hire the same movie.” for it.” Marie said all unsold movies will be The store boasts an extensive classic and western section, and Marie said she would gifted to charity or retirement villages.

Easier access to Wither Hills walking tracks Three new gates have replaced the stiles on the ever-popular Rotary Lookout and Twin Tanks Walk on the Wither Hills Park Farm, making it possible for parents with strollers to venture further along the tracks. It’s also easier for people who could manage the walk but had trouble clambering over the stiles to reach the paths. Of course, parents who do take strollers onto the steeper areas should always ensure that children and stroller are secure and that extra care is taken to avoid slipping. Two new mountain bike cattle stops have been installed on the Rifle Range Trail and Mapp Track as part of the continuing improvements for the bike riders and walkers who make so much use of the recreational opportunities provided by the Wither Hills Farm Park. Farm park users may have noticed

the recently updated entrance signs and maps; 42 signs covering the 15 entry points to the farm park have been renewed. Gravelling work of the walking track

will shortly take place between the Rotary Lookout and Twin Tanks, which will improve this section of the track, particularly when the weather is wet.

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim couple Joyce and Ian Cattermole will open their garden to the public this Sunday to benefit a team of breast cancer survivor dragon boaters. Simply the Breast is a Marlborough based dragon boat team which has received close to $2000 in donations from Joyce and Ian. The idea to hold a fundraising garden event came three years ago when Joyce read an article in the Sun about Simply the Breast fundraising for its team. She was inspired to help raise money for the team and in the first year she raised $1068. This weekend will be the third time she has held an open garden. “I have been very busy getting the garden ready, and it has changed quite a bit since the first open garden three years ago. “We would love to see as many people as possible come through and have a look as it will benefit a very worthy cause,” she said. The garden is located at their home, 213a Scott Street in Blenheim and will be open from 10am - 4pm. There will be pink balloons at the

Terry Ryan, Alastair Hebberd and Lloyd Bush.

Death was once the ‘taboo’ subject that people did not like to speak of In more recent years, this taboo has been lifted by a growing acceptance of death, whether it be because of television documentaries aired following the journey of the dying and deceased, or because most funerals now have a better balance between a life celebrated and a loss mourned. Even for religious families, a church, mosque, synagogue or temple is no longer

the assumed venue for a funeral service. More and more funerals are being held at home, in parks, in places significant to the deceased and in purpose-built chapels at funeral practices. Having to adapt to these ongoing changes are the funeral directors. Funeral directors were once simply undertakers, preparing the body for burial

or cremation, liaising with the priest and family and fulfilling legal requirements. Today, their duties have greatly expanded. They are function organisers, often providing personalised service sheets, a venue, music, sound or video recording, a recommended celebrant, priest or minister, as well as catering. Lloyd, who has been a funeral director

for 10 years, says Sunday’s open day will be an opportunity for people to see what goes on behind the scenes, with the aim of removing some of the fear and mystery from funeral homes. “An open day enables people to come through without the burden of a bereavement and to simply have a look around and have any questions answered,” he says.

Bereavement support At Geoffrey T Sowman we are committed to providing ongoing care and support to our bereaved families. Grieving takes time. We recognise this and offer you, or immediate family members, a complimentary support service with our After Care Support Person, Jenny Andrews. Jenny understands the challenges that grieving can bring. Grief is a normal response to loss, and while there

are many common responses to loss, each of us will have our own unique experience of this. Jenny offers support, reassurance and education. Jenny can also put people in touch with any other services should longer term support be required. Bereavement support does not replace family and friends but rather complements them as part of a full support system.

Strong link to Marlborough Established in 1869 by Alfred Sowman, and trading as Sowman and Sons, Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors has been part of the Marlborough community for over 140 years. In 1930, Alfred was joined in the business by his sons Harold and Geoffrey. After the death of his father and Harold’s retirement, Geoffrey and his wife Rita formed Geoffrey T Sowman Ltd, Funeral Directors. Their three sons, Alistair, Terry and Phillip, have all been involved with the business over the years. Originally operating from a large two-story workshop, the company made caskets by hand. In 1983 monumental masons Hoar and Sons was purchased and moved next-door. Today they are the only registered monumental masons in

Marlborough. The old building was also demolished in 1983 to provide extra parking and a new chapel was erected. Geoffrey T Sowman as pioneers in modern cremation facilities, provide the only cremation service in Marlborough. Today, Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors pride themselves on being able to offer a full range of funeral services and providing exceptional care that is caring, friendly and above all sincere. Our strong reputation comes from our experienced funeral directors and support staff who are passionate and dedicated, to ensure families can have peace of mind at a very difficult time. It is important to know that you can depend on our professionalism to help you with all of the arrangements to ensure a funeral service flows smoothly.

We’re opening our doors and you’re invited. Manager, Lloyd Bush, and his dedicated team take pride in offering a personal service and will be happy to show you around their facilities and answer any questions you may have.

The Sun

Shanghai to London Rally Noeline’s blog A day in Prague part two. Continued from Friday November 7th, 2014. The roads are once again in good condition as we passed through Luxembourg where we all stopped for petrol. The roads are busy with fast moving vehicles so there are walk-overs just for the animals to get to the otherside - a bit like Billy Goats Gruff! We had to get moving as we needed to get to Calais to catch the boat to Dover. Not much happening on the road so some bantering on the radios kept us busy. We arrived at the port just in time for the border officers to check all cars, then onto the boat. We took many photos of the Dover Cliffs as we approached. Getting off the boat, it was all go. Some of the cars got into the truck lane. You can imagine the huge trucks pushing their way in - we just had to keep going and hope for the best, but we all got out safe. The hotel was five minutes down the road. It was small and had small lifts - Ron had to walk up the stairs. We unpacked a few things then off up the road to check out the town - we came across the oldest pub in town so had to have a drink! The building was built in 1376 as a cottage, then in 1525 they turned it into a pub. Had a lot of names, etc on the walls from more recent years of the people who have swum the channel. We also met a man who we got talking with and he can remember the previous Shanghai to London group who came through two years ago. He was probably in the same seat, so if you’re ever in Dover call in and Gordon McKenzie may be still there drinking in ‘The White Horse’. Back at the hotel once again for a lovely English dinner. I had good old shrimp cocktail - just lovely. T he following morning we headed up the hill to visit the Dover Castle that was behind the hotel. How they used to live - huge

rooms, large fire places - and the work that was put into building the castle and forts They worked hard! After a few hours there we headed off to the South Lawn Hotel for our final farewell dinner. Drove in, out, and around many small typical English villages. The South Lawn Hotel is a typical English boutique hotel with large rooms and no lifts - but only two floors so the boys didn’t have to take the bags too far. The hotel was owned by two women so the interior was quite ‘fluffy’. We had another three course meal with lots of banter, finishing with coffee and chocolates and an end-of-rally court where no one escaped being fined! The usual summary of the activities over the last 10 weeks was trotted out and it was excellent fun. The following morning was our last morning together as we all packed up and headed to Brockenhurst - Beaulieu. We were able to go into the private grounds of the Beaulieu Castle and have photos of all the cars lined up. Then around the corner to park on the lawn and look through the Beaulieu Museum. Many great trucks, racing cars, standard everyday cars, etc and something special: A Royal caravan which was built for The Caravan Club by Rollalong Ltd and presented to Prince Charles and Princess Anne in 1955. Also the latest Peugeot which was the car of the year in 2014. (What happen to ours). Mr Bean’s car was there too! There were also cars and custom built cars that the guys on Top Gear built and raced - these were falling apart. Then it was goodbye to some of the group as they went their own way. The next day we all went to Goodwood which is the centre of classic motor racing and the home of the Festival of Speed and Historic racing... an amazing event and

place. Back to the hotel to do the final packing, and as we didn’t have our car and couldn’t fit all our goodies in our suitcases we gave a few back to Keith and Lorraine to pack in their car. Those who were left met up for breakfast and said our final goodbyes, and we all then went our own way. What a great experience something we will never forget. There were 27 of us and 13 cars, and we all got on great. To have that many people from different parts of New Zealand, starting off on the tour and not knowing each other, and for the tour guide Gregg to keep us happy and altogether was fantastic. It all worked really well. We have driven 16,000 km, travelled through may countries, seen cultures we had only read about or seen on TV, been through all weathers, seen the rich and the very poor, and experienced an interesting and challenging array of toilets, along with having to wear gum boots in some showers! Everyone in the group picked up some sort of sickness except Ron and I. We were disappointed our car didn’t make it, but thanks to Avis we picked up a Skoda which got us to the end. Many people ask if we would do it again and the answer is yes, but we would like to explore other places. Favourite place? We didn’t really have one - they all had their own special place. Although Mongolia and crossing the Gobi Desert and staying in the Gur Camp was very different and we loved it. Our car the Peugeot is now back in the country and is in the workshop having an overhaul. This is my final story and would like to thank you all for your kind feedback, and I hope you have enjoyed our journey - I have certainly enjoyed writing it! Noeline and Ron

ROWING The Picton Rowing Club is hosting a month of have-a-go rowing events. All are welcome from 5:30pm on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Please wear casual clothing, trainers and a warm jacket.

FOOTBALL The Nelson Marlborough Falcons suffered the first loss of their ASB Youth League campaign, going down 3-1 to Hawke’s Bay United in Napier last weekend. They play Manawatu United in Nelson on Sunday.

CROQUET

Morkel bowls a yorker outside off stump, and Smith manages to hit the ball through his legs out to the square-leg boundary. “Now he’s taking the mick,” the commentator announces. Ball five, and normality is restored as Smith takes a single. Last ball and Wade, who’s been watching the chaos, smashes a cover drive which looks to be heading for four, but a South African fielder sprawls and deflects it. The batsmen hare back for two. If we get more of what the Australians and South Africans served up, it’ll be a pretty exciting World Cup here in three months’ time.

slog. The ball’s heading for six but Faf du Plessis gets to work. He leaps spectacularly and takes the ball, but realises his momentum is taking him over the boundary. Solution: throw the ball back into play while still in midair. He saves four– it seems a shame it went unrewarded. Smith hits the next ball for four, but it’s not long until du Plessis is involved again. Smith belts the ball in his general direction, and he dives forward and catches the ball in one hand. He throws the ball in the air, jubilant. What nobody realises is Morkel’s bowled a no-ball – not out. Ball four again then, what next?

It’s rare for a sport to split opinion as much as cricket does. While play between the Black Caps and Pakistan moves at the pace of a dead snail, Australia and South Africa have been serving up all sorts of entertainment. The difference in quality isn’t better encapsulated than in the final over of Australia’s innings on Wednesday. The Proteas have been hit all over Canberra, and Steve Smith and Matthew Wade are looking to demoralise them further. Morne Morkel bowls his first ball, and Wade edges luckily. Smith does his best Usain Bolt impression and runs three. Ball two and Smith plays a dirty

By Adam Poulopoulos Entries are down for this weekend’s PAK’nSAVE Sun Run, but the organiser is sure the event will be a success. The Sun Run, formerly the Marlborough Marathon, is clashing with the Queenstown Marathon, which is also being held tomorrow. So far between 400 and 450 people have entered the event, with about 60 percent coming from out of town. Organiser Pete Halligan said the number of entries was about half what they would usually receive. “We’ve had several people email in saying ‘sorry, but we’ve decided to head down to Queenstown instead.” “We will try and sort that out for next year.” Halligan said there had been a late surge in entries during the last week. Despite the low turnout, the Sun Run is still being eagerly anticipated. The event will be based at a new venue,

ATHLETICS The Marlborough Senior Athletics Club is meeting at Athletic Park on Tuesday from 5:30pm. Programme C, which comprises the 200 metres, 400 metres, 3000 metres, high jump, javelin and hammer, will be held. The distance event (3000 metres) will start promptly at 6pm. Everyone aged over 15 is welcome to participate and Children’s Club members are also welcome.

Athletic Park, for many the heart and soul of athletics in Marlborough. The change in venue comes after the race was based at Villa Maria Estate in the past few years. Five races, including the new 15 kilometre race distance, are being offered, and the half-marathon course has remained mostly unchanged. The marathon will be a double-lap of the half-marathon course. Halligan said as a rule, marathon runners did not like running two-lap courses, but the amount of variety in the course meant it had been well-received. He said about 35 percent of entrants were running the half or full-marathon distance, which was a high proportion. He said the marathon favourite was Nelsonbased runner Phil Costley. For a list of briefing and start times, visit the Marlborough Marathon website.
