Record numbers attend fair Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Tua Marina School had a very jolly atmosphere during its annual Christmas Fair last Sunday. There was everything from Christmas carols, decorations, arts and crafts through to paintball, archery and Harley Davidson rides. Children eagerly lined up at Santa’s Grotto waiting for their turn to meet Father Christmas, while other families delighted in touring the indoor Christmas lights display. Principal Cheryl Wadworth said the event was a great success with record numbers attending, and the school raised around $20,000, a figure that could increase again as final figures come in. “There was a lovely atmosphere with the fair themed around Christmas. “Our Christmas Fair’s reputation as a great family event is growing with people coming out to experience the variety of entertainment, stalls, auctions, Santa, and other activities. “Each year we try to improve on the previous year, and we are very grateful for the support we are given from ours and the wider community,” she said.

Just a few of the items which have been donated to the Sun Christmas Appeal.

Donations flood in Donations for the Sun’s Christmas appeal have been flooding in from the community, with everything from clothing, perfume, toiletries and giftpacks through to non perishable food items. Everything donated this year will be benefiting Marlborough Women’s Refuge and Foster Hope’s Kits for Kids. Any donations of the following for these worthy organisations are greatly appreciated. Marlborough Women’s Refuge: Christmas gifts for children, non perishable ‘Christmas treat’ food items, phone top-up vouchers, petrol and supermarket vouchers are also very useful. Kits for Kids: Basics such as hygiene products - toothpaste, shampoo and deodorant, underwear as well as items to show children they are loved, such as books and soft toys for ages 0 -17. Donations (preferably unwrapped) can be brought into the Sun Office on High Street, Blenheim. The appeal ends on Friday, December 19 so please have your donations in by then.

Cheryl heads to America for treatment Continued page 1. The first fundraising event, held at the Blenheim Bowling Club on Saturday, raised $626. Originally from Nelson, Cheryl was living in Beerwah, Queensland, and had just given birth to son Ayden when her doctor noticed she could not relax her hand muscles. After seeing a specialist she was diagnosed with the hereditary disease, with symptoms including progressive muscle weakness, fatigue, slurring of speech and damage to the heart and other organs. Cheryl’s uncle had the disease, but she had been told incorrectly it did not affect women, so had never considered the possibility she had it herself.

The week after her diagnosis she had returned to Blenheim to be closer to mother Sue King and stepfather Bruce King. Cheryl said as time had progressed, so had her symptoms. “I find it hard to walk because my ankles give way a lot. I usually wear braces on my feet. “The last time I went to hospital my throat started to collapse, and I find it hard to swallow.” Cheryl is able to live in her own flat with help from Ayden, designated carers and a CPAP breathing machine she wears while sleeping. The only treatment for the disease locally is painkillers, but Cheryl prefers not to take them.

“Every time I ask them (doctors) about treatment they say there’s nothing they can do,” Cheryl said. “If I have a headache or my back is sore I’d rather have a sleep, and it’s OK when I wake up.” She said the treatment would allow her a more active lifestyle. “I just want to be able to kick a ball around with my son without having to take a nap afterwards.” Sue said she was thankful to those who organised and attended Saturday’s event, and more events would be held in the near future. Cheryl has started a fundraising web page for her cause. To donate go to http://www.givealittle.co.nz/ cause/CherylHarper.

CHRISTMAS PARADE

Margot Wilson.

Ian Columbus.

Entries for the 2014 Picton Christmas Parade are open. The event will be held on Sunday, December 14, starting at 2:30pm. A concert and prize giving will be held following the parade. Prizes will be given for the best community float and best business float. Entries close on November 30. Forms can be picked up from Harcourts in Picton.

Rick Edmonds.

Local heroes recognised Eight Marlburians were among the 13 recognised as local heroes yesterday as part of the Kiwibank New Zealanders of the Year Awards. Four of the recipients are from Blenheim – Cancer Society Marlborough information and support nurse Margot Wilson, Blenheim Lions Club member Lindsay Moir, gymnastics coach Allan Best and long-time Harriers member Ian Columbus. Havelock artist and playwright

Rick Edmonds and Havelock Museum secretary Rita ColletJacobson are also recognised, while Awatere Community Trust champion Lilian Broadhurst and Picton volunteer firefighter Wayne Wytenburg round out the list. Margot has run the Cancer Society for the last 14 years. She said meeting patients and their families has been the highlight of her tenure. “It’s a huge thing in people’s lives but so many have to accept it and

get on with it.” She said the support she had received from her colleagues had helped the Cancer Society develop. “We’ve built up a local service in Marlborough that offers the same as what is offered in the big centres.” Nelson City councillor Brian McGurk congratulated the recipients on their awards and said that it was vital that communities continued to acknowledge the contributions they made.

“Many of these medal winners are unsung heroes whose selflessness has had a profound effect on the lives of so many. “Those acts of charity, optimism and commitment are what bind a community together and as a community we must stand alongside one another, show our appreciation and give thanks for their efforts.” The awards, which cover the entire Top of the South region, were presented at a ceremony at Seifried Estate Wines in Richmond.

Bikers take stand against domestic violence By Adam Poulopoulos A group of Armed Forces members will bring their motorcycles into Blenheim today, spreading a message of domestic violence prevention. The Patriots Defence Force Motorcycle Club has been driving around the South Island, encouraging men to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women. They make the drive annually for White Ribbon Day, a global male-led movement held yesterday to encourage men to stop violence against women. They are due to arrive at Marlborough Boys’ College at 2:30pm, where a representative will

speak to the students. Anyone is welcome to attend. South Island White Ribbon director Colin Agnew said as armed forces personnel, the group believed the cause was something they could bring back to their own country. “As a group it’s something we all feel very passionate about. “Everyone on the ride has different reasons for being here. We have people who’ve come from violent families and some who’ve been violent in the past. “As far as we’re concerned, the women are the caregivers and the nurturers of the family

and they need to be protected.” Blenheim is the final stop on their tour, which began in Nelson eight days ago. During that period, the riders have encountered six days of rain and one of snow. “That just shows how dedicated these guys and girls are,” Colin said. “Not one of them has complained once.” The ride was the fourth in the South Island, and Colin said it had changed a lot. “We’ve gone from people not knowing who we are to people stopping on the open road and waving at us because they know who they are. “It’s starting to work.”

MARLBOROUGH MISSES OUT Marlborough has lost out to Wellington to try to host the 2017 National Brass Band Championships. It was hoped Blenheim would host the event for the first time thanks to the new ASB Theatre. However, the capital won out with many of the North Island bands having reservations about travelling to a South Island venue.

SPENDING UP Electronic transactions rose by $3million in October compared to the same period 12 months ago. Paymark figures showed spending in the region totalled $49.2 million last month, up from $46.2m in October 2013. Spending had continued to track upwards for the past two years.

BAND ON NATIONAL TOUR Marlborough musicians The Broods will embark on a national tour next year. Georgia and Caleb Nott will play shows in Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, New Plymouth, Auckland and Hamilton. They have just finished a tour of America alongside British singer Sam Smith.

Battle complete The Department of Conservation has completed its Battle for our Birds pest control around Mt Stanley in the Marlborough Sounds. DOC said the aerial 1080 pest control, carried out on November 23, is aimed at protecting vulnerable populations of bush robins, weka, rifleman, and giant snails over about 4000 hectares in the Tennyson Inlet Scenic Reserve, Nydia Bay Scenic Reserve and Chance, Penguin and Fairy Bay Scenic Reserve. DOC acting Waitohi/Picton Con-

servation Services Manager Jo Gould said a rise in rat numbers due to an exceptionally heavy beech seed-fall had provided plentiful prey for stoats to feed on. “Aerial 1080 predator control knocks down rat numbers and stoats are reduced through their eating poisoned rodent carcasses.” The pest control began last month with aerial application of non-toxic baits that encourages rats to eat the cereal baits containing biodegradable 1080 pesticide applied on October 10.

The Marlborough airport terminal is being extended.

Patience appreciated as construction continues December is going to be a testing month for people working at the Marlborough Airport Terminal, and for passengers flying in and out of the region, as the terminal extension project moves into its next stage. Marlborough Airport manager Dean Heiford said he appreciated the public’s patience as disruption to the site continued. “The removal of the front of the building and the restricted access to the baggage area are the most obvious changes so far but there is still a lot of rearrangement ahead.”

All but one of the rental car operators will be moved out of the terminal before Christmas, relocating to their new building on the western side of the terminal by December 20. The remaining operator, Avis/ Budget, will be moved out to the new location on the last day of December. The terminal café, CPR Airshop, will keep functioning from its present site through the Christmas-New Year period. The contractors will begin preparing the café’s next temporary site within the terminal in the

New Year. Mr Heiford said the work is being staged so as much of the terminal building as possible remains usable for as long as possible, while still keeping the project on track. He said the contractors were taking a break from 23 December to 12 January, so there would be no building activity at the terminal in that period. People are reminded they cannot park their cars in front of the terminal, but pick up and drop off is encouraged.

Yealands Family Wines has been named overall winner at the 2014 NZI National Sustainable Business Network Awards earlier this month. This is the supreme accolade and is awarded to a business that has performed outstandingly well in all aspects of sustainability. The Marlborough-based company also won the Restorative Impact Award for their composting and heating programmes, which result in a net positive environmental impact. Winery founder Peter Yealands said he was humbled to receive the overall award. “This award is a true honour, especially given the range of businesses nominated for the NSBN Awards in 2014. “Each of these companies has been highly effective in making their vision of a sustainable business a reality, and it is great to see environmental best practice at the core of business growth.” Mr Yealands said the high-quality field contained many companies Yealands has worked with in the

Bohally band for sweet cause By Adam Poulopoulos If you’d like to treat friends, family or even yourself to a tasty treat this Christmas, Bohally Intermediate School can help you out. The school has made 60,000 truffles for their annual Christmas fundraiser, raising about $22,000 so far. The proceeds will be going to new laptops and digital TVs for Bohally students. This is the ninth year the fundraiser has been held. The school’s 350 kids have all been involved in the operation, selling door-to-door and making

Sun reporter Celeste Lodewyk was invited to attend Sensing Murder psychic medium Deb Webber’s show at the weekend.

It’s always been an interest of mine to sit in on a psychic medium live show. I got the chance on Sunday when I was invited to meet Australian psychic medium Deb Webber at her live show held at the Giesen Sports and Events Centre in Renwick. I walked in with no expectations and as I had been instructed, with an open mind. Around 130 people attended the show and it seemed many knew Deb from her time spent on Sensing Murder and sat with eager anticipation of meeting with her and connecting with the deceased. Walking in she was met with a loud applause before kicking off her shoes and setting to work. Guided by ‘spirit’ she walked throughout the audience and approached a number of people for readings. She seemed to connect easily with deceased family members and it didn’t take long before she had accurately described their clothing, demeanour, age and circumstances around their deaths.

the truffles, with classes locked in a competition to see who can sell the most. Teachers and parents have also been involved in making the sweet morsels. About 55,000 of the truffles have been sold, but if you would like purchase some truffles, they are still being sold at Bohally. Left: This year’s top seller Zoe Blackmore, 11, teacher Ally Etty, ‘Friends at Bohally School’ parents committee chairperson Sharee Williams and Stella Roberts, 11, display some of their sweet creations.

Former All Black Norm Hewitt proved a popular speaker with a group of locals who attended a fundraising event for Marlborough Parents Centre last Saturday night. The dinner and auction was hosted by the Giesen Sports and Events Centre in Renwick and featured Norm as MC during the night. The MPC raised $3500 which will be going towards the centre’s new premises at Alana Place.

Organisers said it was an enjoyable night and thanked all the local businesses who donated items and catered for the event. “It was a fun filled night for everyone that attended. “Norm was awesome, an inspirational speaker and a really genuine guy. “He mingled with everyone and people really enjoyed themselves,” Rebecca Toms said.

Local woman Rebecca O’Sullivan pictured with Sensing Murder psychic medium Deb Webber.

In one of her readings she surprised the audience by finding out the name of an attendee, and described the relationship with their relative who had passed over 20 years ago. The messages came through in a variety of forms. Some with parental advice and others with plenty of humour. Deb finished the show with some information on the spirit realms, answering people’s questions about ‘where does my soul go’, and ‘how can I request signs

from the otherside’. Overall I was happy to sit throughout the four hour show and was intrigued by her accuracy with some people and their witnessing their emotional reactions. After the show Deb described the show as ‘beautiful’ and said she enjoyed her brief visit to Marlborough. Deb’s tour went on to Greymouth where she said she was looking forward to reconnecting with families of the Pike River Mine victims.

At Educarents we understand how important it is for children to receive consistent care from a person with whom they are securely attached in the first three years of life. Educarents Marlborough, owned and operated by Miranda McFarlane and Jess Thomas, coordinates licensed home based childcare and nanny services for preschool children aged zero-five years. Educarents provides a pre-school childcare setting to suit the needs of your family, so that your child can access high quality Early Childhood Education (ECE) and care in a caring home environment.

Miranda, a registered ECE teacher, brought Educarents to Marlborough after seeing the difference Educarents was making to families in Canterbury. “I wanted to make high quality home-based childhood education an affordable option for families in the Marlborough community.” Jess joined the business in 2013 after seeing for herself the amazing care provided by an educarer to her own preschool children. “Having a great understanding of the demands of being a working mum, I thrive on being able to connect families with high quality

educarers.” In addition to high quality care, Educarents also subsidises the cost to make home based early childhood education an affordable option for families. Now is the time to consider childcare arrangements for 2015. During the first week of December, appointments will be available to visit educarer homes to see for yourself the quality of our childcare services in action. Theatre tower? Dear Ed, I was passing the construction of the new theatre when I couldn’t help noticing the high tower. Is it a two storey building? I’m sure when they had a model of it at the Civic theatre and there was no tall tower. It doesn’t look like the model at all, it was meant to match with the club buildings. Mind you we never had a say about where it should be built. It also looks very heavy with all that concrete & steel. Kathie Warren

Beware of scam Dear Ed, I would just like to warn other Blenheim residents of Peony Tourism, another one of those scams. According to their scratchy card, I had won USD $175,000...but after a phone call at 11pm one night I was required to deposit $3500 into their bank account first, as they were ready to put the money in my bank in New Zealand . Consultants wasteful Dear Ed, As a ratepayer I’m perplexed by the penchant of council employing extravagant, expensive consultants. The “Only Marlborough” cost at $90,000 was ludicrous. Besides it’s a lie. For example kayaking can happen anywhere from Bay of Islands to Abel Tasman National Park to Marlborough Sounds. Next is the $500,000 consultation process on upgrades to Picton Library and Blenheim’s town centre using an Auckland design consult-

ant. I recall expensive consultants like Urban Plus (Auckland) over Blenheim’s future expansion. That flew in the face of logic and cost $600,000 plus I understand. What’s wrong with local talent in professional retirees? No wonder rates are high. Who’s pushing for consultants? Council or staff. A mouse told me it’s staff. Well then who’s running the show? The tail or the dog? Don Coyote

More poison Dear Ed, I see advertisements for Department of Conservation dropping more 1080 on the Raglan Range area near St Arnaud. This area was bombed with 1080 about three years ago. It has good access with a road along the Raglan Range and easy access via farm and forestry tracks off the state highway. So why not ground trap it with cyanide? I remember last time DOC’s possum lines showed zero possums. Yes zero! All DOC is doing is poisoning public lands. They will kill rats, yes but also insects, native birds, deer, etc. Stupid thing is rats that survive will breed like fury and be over double their original numbers. Oh DOC you’re bloody hopeless! Worse still you’re using my tax money. Are you public servants or not? Neil Wilson

one on one with the Sun

Jo’s treasure Havelock may be a small town but it has a big message, one that local Jo Downey and her team of supporters have delivered in a very artistic way, Sun reporter Celeste Lodewyk discovers. Sick and tired of seeing businesses close and creating empty shop windows, Jo and three other women decided to create something that would stop people in their tracks and entice them to spend time in Havelock. Thus, The Gallery Havelock was born. It has been over a month since this unique little gallery has opened and already it has the rest of the country buzzing. As much as Jo and her enthusiastic group of volunteers have worked to make this a success, the gallery’s building is partly responsible for its growing fame. From the floor to the ceiling, a number of highly intriguing historic stories have emerged, telling tales from the days of the old cottage hospital, a stubborn old metal safe that is now part of the furniture and even ‘accidental’ shotgun holes in the floor. The story behind The Gallery Havelock begins with Jo who was helping out with the previous occupying business, Lagoons Gift Shop. Its owner decided to close down the business, making it the fifth empty shop in Havelock. This was something that did not sit well with Jo. “I could see a steady decline emerging so I decided to action a plan I have had for years to open a gallery. Jo, along with Lisa Clem, Liz Matthews and Lorain Day banded together and gained the support of a number of businesses including Johnsons Barge Services, Bladen Wines and the Mussel Pot. Each of the supporting businesses have been hugely responsible for helping Jo to realise her dream of opening The Gallery Havelock. “It wasn’t going to happen without sponsorship, so when I approached these business owners they immediately came onboard. “Being a local here for 18 years means I could see how much potential a gallery would have in Havelock. “People don’t realise it but we have some truly amazing artists in the area, some of which have artworks sold and gifted to the

rich, famous and in some cases - presidential. “Already after only a month you can see people’s heads turning as they drive past and within minutes they have turned around, parked the car and come in. “We even had a lady touring from Europe come in and spend an hour in the gallery. She later thanked us for ‘creating a Havelock memory’ for her,” Jo says. Wandering around the gallery Jo’s face lights up as she points out each of the exhibiting artworks. “We have beautiful whale bone carvings by Norm Clark who has had carvings gifted to the last six American presidents. “Colin Wynn is another amazing artist who interestingly, has been the official artist of the Royal New Zealand Navy since 1983. “People would be astounded to hear the stories behind these artists, something that makes this gallery really unique,” Jo smiles. It is not only Jo and the people of Havelock who feel this way, recently a travel writer passed through Havelock and was immediately attracted to the gallery. His elation at finding The Gallery Havelock was expressed in his travel blog which is read world wide. His comments sum up it up nicely and is a source of great pride to Jo. “I’ve found a treasure today and the folk here certainly deserve the success coming their way. “Havelock you little beauty, thanks for all the reasons for making me stop, both humble and fabulous!”

By Kristy Martin A field of remembrance featuring 250 white crosses on the Taylor River is set to honour Marlborough’s fallen soldiers in the lead up to Anzac Day 2014. The Marlborough RSA hopes the project will give members of the public a visual representation of how many local soldiers have been killed in armed combat across the globe. RSA vice president Rod Shoemark said the names on the crosses were of local servicemen and women who died in battles between the Boer Wars of South Africa in the late 1800s and the Vietnam War, which ended with the fall of Saigon in 1975. what is broken or damaged Deciding whether to fix a broken product or spring for a new one often feels like an expensive guess. There’s no need to throw away good money on a new product when the old and damaged can be easily fixed for less than the replacement cost. What some people may not realise, is that Marlborough has a large number of businesses

that dedicate their time to fixing, cleaning and even improving what has been broken. Whether you have an old rusty fence hanging off its hinges, a washing machine making funny noises or an old antique chair passed down through the family - these are all things that can be repaired. Blenheim Drycleaning & Laundry EXCELLENCE IN QUALITY & SERVICE

Careful cleaning of upholstery How often have you had out your cleaning products trying to scrub away food marks, drink stains and grubby hand prints from your lounge suite? After a while these marks will begin to leave stain up on stain, so before you despair about having to pay thousands for a new lounge suite, why not try a professional cleaner? We all love our sofas and lounges. They are the main feature of a living space and much like your carpets, they are in constant contact with people and animals are require

regular cleaning. Natural oils from our skin and food traces can transfer to the upholstery and cause skin irritation and become unhygienic over time. Before this happens let us take care of your upholstery and make it safe for you and your family. Some fabrics and leathers require special products and cleaning techniques, so for the best result contact a professional cleaning company to take care of the whole process.

Broken windows need repairing Broken windows are a common occurrence in most homes. Some people may be inclined to just tape up the cracks and put off the repairs, and while this may save money in the short term, eventually they will proved hazardous to your health and safety. Particularly when the weather turns cold or throws out blustery winds, broken windows can let out the warm air or worse - break. So don’t risk the health and safety of your family, contact your local glass specialist and have your windows repaired when they break.

Don’t replace... To advertise your business, call Jill or Simon

Appliances can be repaired Appliances are built to perform. They work hard, year after year, usually without too many problems. They’re easy to take for granted. The result is that when an appliance breaks down, you may be completely at a loss and you don’t know how it works, you have no idea why it stopped working, and you certainly don’t know how to fix it. So who do you call? You call an appliance repair

Proud to support the community

Sean and Sharon Boswell are celebrating 10 years in business.

Brumby’s celebrates 10yrs The husband and wife team purchased the local franchise and opened the doors to their Queen Street Brumby’s Bakery on November 26 in 2004. The bakery quickly earned itself a loyal following and as the number of customers grew, so did the range. “We have been really fortunate to have had such incredible support from the community. “Brumby’s was welcomed right from day one and we are so very grateful to still have this support today,” Sharon says. At the time of its opening Brumby’s was the only independent bakery in Blenheim CBD, but over the years as the makeup of the town changed the business itself evolved.

best ingredients. This, and their commitment to providing a high level of customer service are what have made Brumby’s the success it is today.

“Over the years the bakery has adapted to the changes in the community and as a result we expanded our range to meet the needs of our customers. “We have more sandwiches and filled rolls as part of the cabinet food range which have all proved very popular,” Sean says. Another change seen by Sean and Sharon has been the increase in people with gluten and wheat intolerance. This prompted the introduction of gluten free bread, muffins, rolls and pizza bases, as well as rye bread options and specialty spelt bread to order. “We understand that people have different dietary requirements, tastes and preferences and that’s why here at Brumby’s we

endeavour to cater to this. “It’s all part of our philosophy of going the extra mile for our customers,” Sean says. Looking back over the previous 10 years, both Sean and Sharon say the key to their success has been not only the community support, but also the staff who work hard to deliver on Brumby’s promise to provide preservative free, freshly baked bread every day. “It’s been a wonderful journey and we can honestly say we still enjoy coming into work every day. “We are proud of our staff and the enthusiasm they bring to work every day. “They really are the backbone of the business,” Sharon says.

Brumby’s is proud to support the community, and has donated many vouchers and baked goods to local charities, churches, community groups and organisations. “Being part of this community means we like to help where we can. “We donate to Hospice on a weekly basis, as well as St Marks Addiction Residential Treatment Centre. “We also donate bread to the Oscars Bread of Life programme plus many other community groups, events and fundraisers. “It’s all part of what we do, and giving back to the community gives us a feeling of satisfaction,” Sharon says.

Seddon farmers urged to vote Local Farmers were told they must vote in the forthcoming meat company director elections at a recent meeting of farmers held in the Seddon Hall. The meeting featured candidates who spoke to the small attendance of 20. Alliance candidate Dr. Mandy Bell, a Wanaka veterinarian and deer farmer, said the elections for Alliance and Silver Fern meat companies gave

a farmer an opportunity to push for change and to rectify inefficiencies within the meat industry. “There’s a strong message out there that farmers want change. “The elections are the chance to move forward.” Southland farmer and Alliance candidate Russell Drummond said the crux of the problem was the low return for investment. “Frankly the incumbent di-

rectors have failed to front up to the low farmer returns.” Meat Industry Excellence’s Dave McGaveston, of Tapawera, referred to the small attendance and commented with the forthcoming elections, the future of beef and sheep farming lay in the hands of farmer shareholders. “It’s vitally important. Apathy is the big danger.” Agricultural business consultant Sue Lindsay said it was

unjust farmers were not getting proper returns. “Fonterra’s not a perfect model but the meat industry and farmers can learn a lot from it. “I love the cooperative model. But first and foremost farmers must not be apathetic. They must vote,” she said. Dave McGaveston said Alliance voting would close on December 10 with Silver Fern elections likely to close in the

Good time to check your skin

With summer approaching and the risk of melanoma, it is a good time to check out your skin. Detecting (finding) skin cancer as early as possible is the key to successful treatment. Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. If detected when they are thin and at an early stage most melanomas are curable. Skin cancer often develops from an existing spot, freckle or mole, but it can also develop on what was once normal looking skin. It is recommended that people regularly BAY AUDIOLOGY check all areas of their skin, including skin BAY AUDIOLOGYOFFERS: BLENHEIM OFFERS:not normally exposed to the sun, like the BLENHEIM soles of the feet. or changing in shape or colour, see your doctor straight away.

People over 50 For people over 50 the risk of melanoma increases with age, so it is especially important for those over the age of 50, particularly men, to check their skin regularly. In New Zealand, more men than women develop melanoma and more men die from melanoma. This may be because men do not notice skin changes or they may delay seeing their doctor. Do people with naturally dark skin need to check for skin cancer? While people with naturally dark skin, such as many Maori, Pacific and Asian people, have less chance of getting melanoma, it is still important they check their skin.

Which doctors do skin checks? General practitioners. Although general practitioners (GPs) are not specialists in skin cancer, they are trained and qualified to check skin lesions, and are able to recommend the best approach for treating any unusual skin lesion. A study showed that New Zealand GPs were skilled in diagnosing skin lesions and identifying which lesions should have biopsies (removal of a sample of tissue which is examined in the laboratory to check if it is a skin cancer). Beat hay-fever this season It is hay fever season and antihistamines seem to be the only well-known preventative medicines, but there are many natural therapies available. With hay fever season almost in full swing, there are many natural therapies that may alleviate irritation and pain without the need to go to the pharmacy. Vitamin C and bioflavonoids help the part of the immune system related to allergies and histamine release. Vitamin A and carotenoids are good for the maintenance of healthy mucous membranes of the nose, throat and eyes. Good sources of carotenoids include apricots, carrots, pumpkin, sweet potato, spinach, kale, and collard greens. Omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the production of inflammatory chemicals in the body. They can be obtained from fish oil or flax seed capsules. Horseradish, Garlic and Fenugreek help to dry up discharge and relieve hay fever

symptoms Taking a horseradish supplement during the hay fever season, helps to alleviate hay fever or reduce the severity of the symptoms. Two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and two of honey in a glass of water, three times a day can also be an effective treatment for hay fever symptoms. The vinegar and honey help digestion and reduce the formation of mucous.

Solid start for scholarship winner SpeedSport Scholarship winner Brook Reeve has made a solid start to his motor racing career, with four top-six results from the opening two rounds of the New Zealand Formula First championship. The Marlborough Boys’ College old boy qualified fourth-fastest on his racing debut at the Taupo circuit over Labour weekend, scoring a second-place finish. He led the final race before slipping off the track and recovering for seventh in the 20-plus field. On his first visit to the Pukekohe race circuit last weekend, the 17-year-old added two topsix results from the three races. He holds an 11-point lead in the rookie of the year title race. Reeve, now based in Palmerston North, said he was happy with how his season had started. “I’m definitely going for a (race) win. Costley finished 23 minutes ahead of his nearest challenger, Nic Orr from Wellington. Marlborough’s top two finishers were Seddon’s Robbie Barnes, who finished fourth in three hours and 16 seconds, and Brett Forgesson of Blenheim, who was six seconds and one place further back. Claire Walton from Auckland was the first woman home in three hours, 11 minutes and 41 seconds. Blenheim’s Annabelle Latz was second

in three hours and 17 minutes. In the half-marathon, Blenheim’s Keren Edwards was the first woman home in a time of one hour, 38 minutes and 13 seconds. She finished sixth overall, while Glenn Blackmore, who finished about a minute quicker, was the first local man home. The race was won by Kerry Faass from Southbridge in one hour, 15 minutes and 10 seconds. In the half marathon walk local man Jonathan Martin was second, finishing in two hours, 42 minutes and 24 seconds. The event was run in windy, changeable conditions.

Coopers pigeon wins 700 mile race By Alister Cooper The Blenheim pigeon club raced from Invercargill a distance of 700 km as the crow (pigeon) flies on November 16. The birds were liberated at 7.10am. As the day progressed the temperatures increased and the northeast breeze did little to help the birds, nevertheless the winning birds made the distance home in very good times. The winning bird from the loft of Alister Cooper in Renwick, raced home in nine hours and one

minute with a velocity of 1295.06 metres per minute. A very good second went to Sindy Kirkwood of Spring Creek when her blue hen, recording 1292.95 mpm. Third place went to the Two Fishers loft of Dillon’s Point and recording a velocity of 1258.83 mpm. On Saturday the birds were liberated at Christchurch at 6.30am, in hope of getting the birds home before the forecasted bad weather

arrived. One bird stood out ahead of all others in this race and that was the chequer cock bird of Nearo partnership loft of Seddon. This pigeon was nearly 14 minutes ahead of all the other birds recording a velocity of 949.68 mpm. Second and third positions were closely contested by Donald Morrison and Carl Kirkwood, both of Spring Creek. Their birds separated by only decimals (or seconds) with velocities of 901.37 and 901.12 mpm.

Second time lucky By Adam Poulopoulos She had to overcome a hurricane, the application process and finally illness, but finally, Tracey Sims completed the New York City Marathon. The Marlborough Harriers club member completed the run in four hours and 44 minutes earlier this month. The run itself sounds taxing, but Tracey faced several hurdles before getting on the course. She travelled over for the 2012 race, which was cancelled after Hurricane Sandy left debris lining the streets, closed the subway and sent the city into lockdown the previous week. She said it was a demoralising experience. “It was quite devastating actually. We had a really good trip but we didn’t end up running. “It was quite a big political issue. People thought the cost of the marathon Tracey Sims with some of her marawas excessive after all the damage that thon memorabilia.

had happened.” With New Zealand getting a quota of runners each year, Tracey applied again when she returned, and was accepted for this year’s event. She arrived in New York on Thursday ahead of the Sunday race, and woke up on Friday morning with the flu. “I didn’t think I was going to run. I went down to the chemist and dosed myself up,” she said. Race day dawned windy and cold and Tracey arrived at the course at 6:30am, for a 10:30am start. Despite the illness Tracey said the event was the best she’d ever completed. “It wasn’t easy, but I got through it. It was an exciting course and a fantastic, amazing event. “I think all of New York came out to support, and there were thousands of people with signs. You’d turn a corner and there was country music playing, then you’d turn another and there was a brass band.” Tracey said she hoped to complete the event again in 2019, but she had other plans before that. Five Marlburians competed in the event altogether.

From strength-to-strength By Adam Poulopoulos Pre-season work is translating to early-season runs for Grove Tavern Wairau cricketer Ma’ara Ave. The 16-year-old top-order batsman has 173 runs in six innings, with two half-centuries, in the club season so far. He said the hours spent training indoors during the colder months has meant he has hit the ground running. “We did a lot of technical work and it’s been good to transfer that onto the grass wickets. “We’ve each had personal

things to work on, and for me it was my balance. Cav (Marlborough representative coach Andrew Cavill) has been really helpful.” This season, the right-hander has also been a regular in Marlborough’s rep team, building on his debut, the Hawke Cup win against Nelson in the final game of last season. “There’s a lot of experience around the squad, which is good,” he said. “They’re always willing to give a bit of advice.” Marlborough’s next assign-

ment is a Hawke Cup rematch with Nelson this weekend. “It’ll be good to beat them again,” Ave said. Ave’s coming off his first full club season last summer, when he scored 244 runs at an average of just over 20, and 82 twenty20 runs in four innings. He is an all-round sportsman, making the Marlborough Boys’ College First XV squad this season, and playing basketball before giving it up to focus on cricket. Right: Ma’ara Ave.

Formula Ford Blenheim driver Dyson Freeman is lying first in class 2, and fifth overall, in the Ace Hire South Island Formula Ford Championship. At the latest round in Timaru, Freeman suffered his first retirement of the season, before two strong showings saw him retain fifth spot overall, and vault into first by nine points in his class. The Timaru round also served as the opening weekend of the national championship, and Freeman sits second in his class in that competition. The next meet is at Teretonga on December 7, which Freeman will attend if enough funding is secured.

The tall left-armer helped dismiss the Aces for just 90. Fifth-placed Central Districts play top-of-the-table Northern Districts in Napier on Friday.

War veterans break bread

Children all smiles for award The children and teachers of Picton Kindergarten had their efforts rewarded last week when they received their Enviroschools Bronze Award. Heather Graham and Kathryn Richards, Marlborough Kindergarten Association Head Teachers and Enviroschools Coordinators came to Picton Kindergarten last week to present the kindergarten with their award along with a plant and a cheque for $500. The teachers and children have been working towards the award for some

time and, using a number of healthy, peaceful, and sustainable practices each day. The recent addition of a water tank to collect the rain that drains off the new roof over their sandpit has been an exciting way to learn about water conservation. The children use the water to water the plants in the garden for their sandpit play and have learnt to turn the tap off when they have filled their buckets.

After being a part of opposing armies during the Vietnam War, Nguyen Dinh Thu and Blenheim resident Peter Slape had dinner last month. Peter, a radio operator in the ANZAC Battalion in 1971, and Nguyen, a medic in the North Vietnamese Army, had never met before the dinner in Ho Chi Minh City. Peter said the pair got on like the best of friends. “It was a wee bit emotional but it was incredible. “I couldn’t get out of my mind 44 years before I’d wanted to kill him and he’d wanted to kill me. “It emphasised the futility of war and what a waste it is.” Although the pair did not speak much about the war, Peter said Nguyen told him he had walked from Hanoi to Saigon, now Ho Chi Minh City, dodging B52 bombs. Peter said he told Nguyen how impressed he was with the country’s transformation. “The people are free and the infrastructure is amazing. “The people were so friendly. Being a New Zealander we were treated like royalty. The people couldn’t do enough for you.” The meeting was arranged by a friend of Peter’s son, who

knew Nguyen, and the pair communicated through Nguyen’s daughter.

Peter was joined at the dinner by his brother, two sons and three grandsons.
