Christmas lights

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk The countdown to Christmas has officially begun and with only 22 days to go, Renwick woman Marie Parnwell has kicked off festivities by creating a spectacular lights display in a room beside the Railway Station Cafe. Officially opening on Monday, Marie hosted the first of 56 groups booked to tour the display, comprising of local preschools, schools and resthomes. Christmas lights delight Continued from page 1 Beavertown Early Learning Centre children and their parents arrived brimming with anticipation and they weren’t disappointed. Walking in there were gasps of amazement and immediately the room filled with joyous smiles. “See the smiles, see the happiness on the children’s faces? This is the reason why I put up this display,” Marie said. “I also see the emotion in the adults and myself included and sometimes it brings a tear to my eye,” she laughed. This is the third year Marie has put up her ‘A

Christmas Delight’ display. Last year she held it at the Wairau Presbyterian Pioneer Church in Renwick which attracted droves of visitors. This year due to demand she looked for a new venue in Blenheim and found the empty room at the Blenheim Railway Station. She approached the owners of Railway Station Cafe who very kindly donated her the use of the room. Marie then set about putting up her lights and decorations in time for Monday’s opening. While the room is open by appointment to private tours, Marie will open it to the public on the following days:

TWICE WEEKLY

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk A colourful and energetic performance portraying the life of a little fish who ventures from his home in the Marlborough Sounds opens this Friday. Around 240 people are involved in the ‘A Fish Tale’, a Marlborough Dance Centre production. Directors Robyn Simmons and Jeannie Mark say for the past eight weeks performers have been rehearsing ahead of opening night, but planning began well before. “This show has been our end of year focus. It’s been so much fun and everyone involved has had a great time,” Robyn says. The show is described as being very bright and colourful with a very humorous narration. A Fish Tale tells the story of a little clown fish and his father’s journey to find him in the Tasman Ocean. His father, Marlin, embarks on a dangerous mission to save his son, meeting many interesting sea creatures along the way, accompanied by a friendly but forgetful fish named Dory. The story is told in dance and narration showcasing ballet, highland, lyrical and contemporary styles of dance that is suitable for all ages. The show opens this Friday at the Floor Price Civic Theatre in Blenheim at 6:30pm.

December 6, 10am - 2pm December 13, 10am - 2pm December 17 through to December 24, from 10am - 6pm Entry to the display is a gold coin donation which goes directly to Hospice Marlborough. In addition to the lights display, Marie has also organised for Father Christmas and his elves and fairies to travel via train from Picton to Blenheim on December 21, where he will arrive at 1:30pm. To make an appointment to visit ‘A Christmas Delight’ display, phone Marie on 027 875 8771.

He was assisted into a boat by his companion and taken to shore. Farmers praying for rain

inbrief

By Adam Poulopoulos A Pelorus Valley dairy farmer believes the region will be subject to serious drought if dry conditions continue. Bruce Richmond says the current conditions are the worst he has seen in the 14 years he has lived on the farm. “It’s probably sitting on a knifeedge at the moment. “The little streams that usually dry up in January and February have already dried. “We haven’t really had any substantial rain since July.” Marlborough has remained dry after a warm November brought little respite. The total of 16.6 millimetres of rainfall last month was markedly lower than the 47mm which falls on average. The latest figures indicate the July-November rainfall figure this year, 99.6mm, is the lowest since records began in 1930. The next lowest, in 1997, was 132.6mm. Bruce has not had to take drastic

Funds will go towards Paula’s travel, accommodation and treatment costs as she prepares to undergo a stem cell transplant in Russia in 2016. Several Marlborough businesses have donated prizes to be sold on the night. So far, Paula has raised about $5500 of the $60,000 she needs. FAMILY COOKBOOK COMEBACK

Marlborough is on the brink of serious drought after a very dry few months.

measures yet, as the odd shower has helped to “keep the grass going.” He says he will have to stop irrigating if conditions get much worse. “The river level is very low,

and it’s fast approaching the level where those who are irrigating will have to stop. “When it stops people will have to feed out supply meant for January and February, which will put pressure on supply for later in the

season. “If we strike hot weather in December and January things could get serious. “I hope like hell it rains in the next three or four weeks.”

Appeal to cut back on water in Renwick Renwick is on the brink of water restrictions and residents can do their bit to delay bans by easing back on the amount of water being used for gardening. With the Renwick aquifer at a 30-year low this is the time for water-saving practices and voluntary rationing the amount of water going onto gardens may delay restrictions, Marlborough District Council operations and maintenance engineer Stephen Rooney said. He said watering gardens can sometimes more than treble the normal household water use which averages out at 600 litres per person

3

per day. “A garden sprinkler is capable of pushing out 900 litres an hour.

Watering the lawn and garden for one hour can use as much water as a typical family of four might use

over the course of a whole day.” About 2.5 cm of water each week (rainfall and watering) is all that is required to keep lawns green over summer. Tips for efficient water use. Water early morning or late evening, when heat and wind have dropped. Water every 3-5 days or less when possible; plants can gradually adapt to less water. Use a timer on any sprinklers – over-watering is a waste. Don’t cut lawns too short. Allowing the grass to grow longer leaves will encourage deeper roots to reach soil water.

Johns Kitchen is relaunching its family cookbook in time for Christmas. The book called ‘Food 4 U’ – cheap eats for families has over 100 family recipes and uses easily sourced, inexpensive food items. Johns Kitchen convener Yvonne Dasler said the cookbook proved popular and could be purchased at Johns Kitchen, at the Crossroads and the Mistletoe Markets.

MILITARY EXERCISE Marlborough will be part of a major military training exercise in October next year with more than 2000 defence force personnel expected to take part in the exercise around Marlborough, Tasman and Buller. It follows on from the strong 2013 exercise in Timaru and it is expected the general public will have the chance to get close to the action during certain aspects of the event. There is likely to be an international flavour with Australian and Canadian groups expected to take part as well.

City life beckons for Mitch By Adam Poulopoulos Blenheim-raised musician Mitch Alderlieste is packing up his instruments and heading to Wellington to take the next step in his music career. Mitch leaves in March as he attempts to break into the capital’s music scene. He is making the move with Hayden Lawrence, the keyboardist/vocalist from the pair’s band Superminx. Mitch was working at Ken Ham’s Music Works up until about a month ago, but says he resigned to concentrate full-time on music. “I really enjoyed working retail but music is where the passion is. “I learnt a lot from Ken and the guys there, but music has always been my goal.” He says through the move, he was aiming to be noticed as much as possible. “I just want to play to as many people as I can because you never know who is going to be in the audience. “There’ll be some weeks where I’m struggling. I know I’ll have to live off something

Joshua’s growing juggernaut Story and photo by Jacob Page Joshua Marshall is as green fingered as they come. The 13-year-old Marlborough Boys’ College pupil has released his own gardening and cooking book ‘Young Gardeners Growing Chefs’, based on getting kids growing their own fruit and vegetables. Joshua’s mission does not stop there, as he hopes to use proceeds from the sale of his book to go into schools and show them just how easy it is to use renewable food sources. Joshua, who had a book signing, in Blenheim, to help promote the book he penned with his mum, Julia Davidson. Marshall said his favourite fruit to eat was the apricot. “It has a naturally sweet taste that goes really well with so many things.” Joshua says he is slowly getting used to all the attention and the fact people actually want to buy his book. “The attention is something I don’t think I’ll ever get used too.

Konstanze Arnoldussen gets a signed copy of 13-year-old Blenheim author Joshua Marshall’s book ‘Young Gardeners Growing Chefs’ thanks to the man himself.

“It was daunting having to give a speech to Bohally (pupils). “I really enjoyed cooking with friends for this book and when I go to schools the kids often ask if the stuff from the garden tastes different from the supermarket. Joshua became the first child

to be named Marlborough’s top gardener, in 2009 and then took runner-up in the national award the same year. He said he felt it was important to promote his message in schools to try to get kids involved in gardening and healthy eating.

Gloomy walkway now has positive message Around 30 people gathered for the blessing of the newly completed walkway mural connecting Nelson and Parker Streets in Blenheim, last week This mural was a joint project between Crime Prevention through Environmental Design and the Stop Bullying Campaign to enhance a very gloomy and heavily tagged but well used walkway. Those who attended the blessing and following breakfast represented interested residents, those involved in the painting of the mural, artist Kylie Fleur Clarke, the Mayor and members of the Assembly of God church. The mural portraying an anti-bullying message creates a positive vibe in a place where many felt unsafe. It was designed by Kylie Fleur Clarke with help from many community groups including the OSCAR holiday programmes, youth doing their community service, the Nativity Youth Group and even regular uses of the walkway.

Blenheim club trees poisoned The Blenheim Club president Mark Batchelor is furious after trees on their High Street site were apparently poisoned last week. Four plane trees on the property, at the corner of High and Seymour Streets, were found with drill holes, which look to have been used to inject herbicide or a similar

Woman injured in fall

product. Three of the trees have started to lose leaves, while two further trees, another plane and a beech, were not drilled into. The trees are about 30 years old each. No progress has been made on catching the culprits.

Mr Batchelor says there was no excuse for the poisoning. “I’m surprised at their (culprits) arrogance thinking they can enter someone else’s property and damage it when I expect they would not like that done to themselves. “Anyone with an ounce of integrity would have made contact if

they were unhappy about the trees with a view to finding a resolution, which I’m sure the club would’ve been amenable to.” He says the club was taking steps to preserve the trees, but would most likely replace them if they died. Marlborough District Council

reserves and amenities officer Robin Dunn calls the event “disappointing”. “The trees add much to Seymour Square and the park setting. “These trees would easily qualify for heritage and notable status.”

He says he was still getting his head around everything. “It’s a bit like getting married. It seems like a good idea at the time then you get told to do everything to perfection and you don’t have the vaguest clue what it’s going to look like.” Terry says he wanted to get across how much the industry had changed as well as infor-

Email celeste@blenheimsun.co.nz to go in the draw. The draw will be made next Wednesday. The book is also available at Blenheim Bookworld and The Magazine Shop on Scott Street.

Halal a choice

A great place to go

Dear Ed, As a consumer I am concerned at the frequency of halal labelling on a wide range of food products. For personal reasons we, as a family, have avoided these products but it was only recently I became aware that a percentage of the “tax” goes to support sharia law and all that means to the wider community. I would suggest that consumers do a Google search on halal choices and other related sites for further information. From there, it is your choice, but as for me and my household - no halal products at all. Nicola Gray

Dear Ed, I am writing about the Wholesale Nursery at the corner of Hammerichs and Old Renwick Roads. It is a great place to go. The owner has for many years run it from a wheelchair and must surely be an example of the Kiwi Battler. But yesterday when I called in and got talking to the assistant, she told me there has recently been a rumour

going around that they are closing. This is completely untrue; but this misinformation has caused the flow of customers, believing this, to slow, and it is affecting the business. Not nice when Christmas is so close. Call in, people, and find out for yourselves, it is business as usual. Elaine Harmer

More toxic 1080

• High quality jade grantite plaque Ask us about our colour ceramic service

Dear Ed, I see where the Department of Conservation is dropping more 1080 both in Pelorus Sound and near St Arnaud. A St Arnaud drop was done just a few years ago. Besides access is easy so employ trappers with cyanide which isn’t an ecosystem toxin like 1080 is. But then what’s the purpose. The big beech seeding year is a nonsense. Beech trees have been here for millions of years. Rats were introduced by Maori 800 years ago. I recall bird life abundant up to the 1990s until DOC and Animal Health Board started 1080 topdressing of public lands. Wasteful of public money - destructive of the ecosystem - insects, birds, animals. Ken Lloyd

Food for thought Dear Ed, As a recent returnee to Marlborough after many years, I have been delighted at the choice and quality of your bars and restaurants. I have deliberately tried to go to as many places as possible to try to work out what will become regular eating spots and find myself spoilt

for choice. Most places seem to have a great atmosphere and are reasonably priced with all sorts of cultures and cuisine available. Whether I’m after a coffee, muffin, salad or steak, I’m yet to have a bad meal. A Geary

Ian’s long run Ian Columbus is getting recognition for his years of dedication and service to athletics in the Marlborough region. Adam Poulopoulos looks back at his stellar contribution to Marlborough sport. The Marlborough Harriers Club has been in existence for 81 years. For 56 of those, Ian Columbus has been a member, and he’s not finished yet. Ian was recognized for his work with Harriers and Marlborough Athletics when he was awarded the Marlborough Medal at the Marlborough Sports Awards last month. He is the second recipient of the award, which is given for a lifetime contribution to sport in the region. Ian said he was still getting his head around the achievement. “It was mind-boggling really. It was a bit overwhelming. “I didn’t expect anything like that.” The man known as ‘Flea’ moved to Marlborough with wife Audrey from Christchurch in 1957, and joined Harriers the next year. In the early years Ian and Audrey would pack their six children into a caravan and attend meets. During his time with harriers he has been both club secretary and president, was named Harrier of the Year in 1973, and was made a life member in 1985. He was involved with founding both the Queen Charlotte Relay and King and Queen of the Withers, the expansion of Athletic Park

and forming the Tasman Centre, which covers the entire Top of the South region. Ian said he counts running with world-renowned athletics coach Arthur Lidyard, and winning the 10,000 metres in his division at the National Championships in Wellington during the 1980s, as his career highlights. He said the comradeship among the athletics community was what kept him going back. In presenting Ian’s medal Harriers secretary Les McKay said he had shown his abilities as a thinker, planner and doer for many years. “He has shown seemingly unlimited energies, abilities and most of all resourcefulness for work, innovation and creativity when dealing with the things he was passionate in. “He is the champion of the underdog and assisted others at the expense of himself.” In recent years Ian’s running days have ended due to a triple heart bypass and three knee replacements, but Audrey said his enthusiasm still remained. “He still goes to club days when someone picks him up. “He was called ‘Mr Harriers’ for a long time.” Nationally, Ian was president of Athletics New Zealand in 1995, and three years later was awarded a medallion for services to the organisation. He held course steward and timekeeper positions at national level, as well as being a runner of repute himself. His involvement in Marlborough sport did not stop at running. In his younger days he played cricket for Wairau and as a halfback for the Opawa rugby team. For three seasons he became a rugby referee. Outside sport, Ian worked as an accountant for about four decades, and he and his family grew vegetables and flowers on a three-acre plot on Goodman Street for many years. Ian’s Marlborough Medal win was sandwiched by two other awards – his acceptance to the Marlborough Civic Honour Roll in September, and a Kiwibank Local Hero of the Year award he received in Nelson last week.

Puppies are NOT just for Christmas. Are you prepared for the new arrival?

Puppies love to chew on all sorts of things, it is important to get them their own toys, small stuffed toys or squeaky toys.

Planning and preparation for puppy care, routine, responsibility, exercise and rules are all very important and requires patience.

Remember that you are legally responsible for your dog and you must take all responsible steps to ensure it does not endanger, intimidate, injure or otherwise cause distress to any persons.

Puppies are cute. However they grow very quickly. Dogs generally live for about 11 years – are you prepared for this responsibility!

Puppies continually develop behavioural patterns so socialising is vital, this helps puppies learn acceptable behaviour and gain confidence.

Puppies are adorable – how suitable is your home? This new environment needs to be safe to live, play and explore in.

Proudly brought to you by the Marlborough District Council Animal Control in conjunction with the SPCA.

International Volunteer Day Dec 5th

Volunteers are not paid .... not because they are worthless but because they are priceless!

Deirdre’s call for volunteer help Witherlea animal lover Deirdre Lister believes passionately in a New Zealand free from factory farming, and the cruelty of pig farming in particular. She’s a volunteer for animal charity SAFE and says December 5, International Volunteer Day, is the perfect time for people in Blenheim to sign up to help animals. International Volunteer Day is a day first designated by the United Nations in 1985 to make visible volunteers’ contributions at national and international levels. SAFE’s Blenheim volunteers are getting out there to help animals, and especially pigs this year due to all the recent exposure showing they suffer neglect and abuse on top of routine hardship, in factory farms. “My heart truly breaks for these animals. When I saw the cruelty towards those pigs I knew I couldn’t sit back and do nothing,” Deirdre says. She is one of over 1000 people who are expected to be collecting nation-

wide during SAFE’s annual appeal this year. The vibrant and fun event, complete with collectors in animal costumes, will take place on December 19 and 20. “Animal welfare is my passion. I’ve been volunteering for SAFE for some time now, doing all manner of things to help animals. “I feel that their work is vitally important to help spread the word so we can make things better for animals who are suffering, and I really encourage locals to join me in December,” she says. Money raised during SAFE’s appeal will be used to fund campaign initiatives and humane education projects in 2015. Blenheim residents who want to do their bit to help the animals can register at www.safe.org.nz Collectors can give as little time as two hours to collect in their own area. To make an immediate $3 donation please text ANIMALS to 4419 now.

Marlborough Stroke Club wishes to thank our wonderful, hard working volunteers, without whom we would not be able to function and the stroke community would be that much the poorer. Among other things they are drivers, bakers of cakes, sellers of raffles, listening ears, organizers of entertainment, and most importantly providers of friendship and care to our members. We welcome new volunteers. Blenheim woman Deirdre Lister pictured with her hen ‘Cordelia’. Deirdre is a volunteer for animal charity SAFE and is appealing for more volunteers. Volunteers vital to Help when it’s Cancer Society needed Cancer Society Marlborough is a non government funded organisation and relies on donations and volunteers to continue its support for people affected by cancer. Volunteer co-ordinator for Cancer Society Marlborough Margaret Tepania said volunteers were “vital” to the organisation. “Without them we wouldn’t be here. “Our volunteers help in so many ways and are people who are really kind and

generous with their time,” she says. T he C a nc er So ciet y Marlborough provides a comprehensive range of support and information services for people affected by cancer and relies solely on the generosity of donors for funding. It covers the greater Marlborough Area, including the Upper Wairau Valley, Havelock, Picton, the Marlborough Sounds and south to Kekerengu, including Seddon and Ward.

Unfortunately for many families in Marlborough, dementia has had an impact on their lives. Supporting these families is Alzheimers Marlborough, an organisation formed to assist and support carers and families dealing with the disease. Providing the backbone to this organisation is a team of dedicated and willing volunteers. “We offer our volunteers training and education to support them in their roles,” volunteer co-ordinator Rona Kennington says. For more information about volunteering your time, contact Rona at Alzheimers Marlborough.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of so many of our local clubs, services and organisations and I want to take this chance to thank each one of them for the way they contribute to our community. This year I’d like to pay special tribute to all those who give their time to the children of Marlborough – whether through sports coaching, arts and culture, mentoring, support for the vulnerable or simply to help our children to do things that are fun! Our volunteers add much to the quality of community life but they also provide valuable capacity to our important health and safety services, whether it is as hospice volunteers or search and rescue support - or any number of roles in between.

Volunteers so often give their time without expectation of recognition but it is important that they know they are greatly valued and much appreciated. The countless hours they give to us all contributes much to making Marlborough such a wonderful place to live. Alistair Sowman

GOLD, OLD COINS, WAR MEDALS, OLD BANKNOTES AND VINTAGE WATCHES DO YOU HAVE ANY OF THE ABOVE? IF SO, THINK HARD ABOUT...

The historically high New Zealand gold price • • • • • • • • •

Are the items doing any good just lying about in cupboards and drawers? Will the kids or grandchildren really want or appreciate them? Will the burglars get them? Can the museum handle any more than they already have in storage? Will they be destroyed in an earthquake or other disaster? Have you the expertise to sell them yourself on the internet? We have that expertise and can get them into collectors hands quickly. Is the money better in your pocket in these harsh economic times? Giving the items away? Consider selling them to me and giving the money instead.

YOU KNOW THE ANSWERS – WE WANT TO BUY – SO CASH IN NOW!

Anthony Grant from John Bertrand (Collectables) Ltd. will be visiting Marlborough this week on a buying trip for the company. See the page opposite for a full list of venues. He is very keen to purchase a wide range of collectables, especially the following items:

• • • •

Old Coins • Old Banknotes War Medals • Old Gold Vintage Watches • Military Badges Pre 1950’s Postcards (collections and accumulations)

SEE THE PAGE OPPOSITE FOR EXAMPLES OF THE ITEMS WE WANT TO BUY, SAMPLE BUYING PRICES, AND THE VENUES WE WILL BE BUYING AT.

Emergency services sign understanding St John and the New Zealand Fire Service (NZFS) updated their Memorandum of Understanding, yesterday guiding co-ordination between the two services. The agreement, formalising practices introduced since a 2005 Memorandum of Understanding, sets out clear processes about who should respond and when; procedures for dispatching vehicles; equipment and training levels along with criteria for establishing NZFS First Response units. The NZFS provides a medical support response with St John ambulance along with non-medical assistance (lifting and extracting patients)while St John provides ambulance standby when NZFS anticipates they may need medical assistance at a call-out. St John Chief Executive Peter Bradley and Fire Service National Commander Paul Baxter say the updated agreement will ensure faster responses to emergency calls and better outcomes for patients.

Marlborough’s Chamber of Commerce continues to tout the Link Pathway as a future tourism jewel for Marlborough. The restoration of the historic pathway continues to progress thanks to a cash boost and Marlborough District Council (MDC) pledging $75,000 a year for the next four years. The submission for funding was put forward by the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce back in May and approved as part of the regional development plan The 42km path that runs from the Picton ferry terminal to Anakiwa has already had more than 27,000 volunteer hours put into it. Upon completion, the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce hopes it will draw 20,000 visitors each year and generate close to $3 million thanks to its location and ease of access.

MDC spokesperson Dean Heiford said the decision was made as the Council felt it would be another great way for people to enjoy the Marlborough Sounds area. More than 28km of the track has already been completed or is under construction largely through volunteers led by Link Pathway executive officer Rick Edmonds. It is expected another 10,000 hours will be needed before completion with construction likely to cost around $600,000. The Marlborough Chamber of Commerce said in its submission that visitors spend one to three nights in the area and spent between $131 and $176 each per day. Moston blazes moto cross By Adam Poulopoulos A local motocross rider has gone from spending time off the bike to reclaiming his national title in two months. Moston Wadsworth rode away with victory at the New Zealand Veterans’ and Women’s Motocross Championships in Southbridge, South Canterbury last month. Wadsworth won the 50-54 years age group category, finishing 12 points ahead of his nearest challenger, Ricky Trumpeter from the West Coast. Wadsworth won four of the five races in the 15-man division. Wadsworth also came second in the combined age/placing rankings from the feature race. His victory completed a journey which had seen him resume his career two months ago. A multiple national champion already, he gave up the sport a year and a half ago, citing a lack of interest. He says he had not quite discovered

Moston Wadsworth with his NZ Veterans’ trophy.

the sharpness he had before the hiatus, but was happy all the same. “I’ve done a reasonable amount of practice the last three months to get ready for it.

“I’m not quite 100 percent race fit but I’m happy with how it went.” Next year’s national championships are in Taranaki, but Wadsworth will be racing in the

55 plus age group. Overall, 10 Marlborough Motorcycle Club riders competed in the event and 126 riders completed altogether.

Marlborough youngsters take awards Alistair Gifford capped off a huge year by being named sailor of the year at the 2014 Tasman Secondary School Sports Awards. Gifford, who represented New Zealand at the Youth Olympics in China earlier this year, was presented with the accolade on

Sunday night. His Marlborough Boys’ College schoolmates Joshua Leach, Quinn Udy and Joel MadsenClark were also recognised as shooter, squash player and male mountain biker of the year respectively. Marlborough Girls’ College

student Liv Bishop made it a Blenheim one-two in the mountain biking category to win the female award. Sprinter Lucy Sheat was named female athlete of the year, while Georgia Catterick won the female road cyclist award. Right Alistair Gifford.

Touching the top By Adam Poulopoulos The time spent creating a touch rugby culture has culminated in Queen Charlotte College making the national tournament for the first time. The 14-strong squad is preparing to travel to Papakura for the 20-team tournament, to be held from December 12-14. Coach Jack Saxon says the school, with a roll of 380, was the smallest competing at the tournament. “It’s quite rare for a school of our size to make it to nationals. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a school that small.” Q CC wi l l comp et e against schools with vast talent pools, in some cases four or five times the size, but Saxon says the school’s “robust touch rugby culture” held them in good stead.

The sport is QCC’s most popular, with about 25 percent of students enrolled. The school’s prizegiving has been shifted to early next week to accommodate the tournament. Saxon said there were several reasons for the sport’s popularity. “It’s a social sport and it’s a mixed school. “Everyone’s welcome to learn as long as they’re committed and ready to get fit.” Saxon said the focus had been on learning attacking and defensive systems, to cancel out the pool of natural ability larger schools have at their disposal. As the culture has grown the number of enrolments has also increased. “There’s been a lot of scaffolding put in at each level,” Saxon says. “We’ve created a ladder to the rep team, which

The Queen Charlotte College touch team earlier in the year.

helped us create a factory of young players.” The team’s build-up has been stymied by injuries, exams and a leadership camp. Saxon said while the team had high hopes, they

needed to have realistic expectations “To an extent, making nationals is the icing on the cake for the year. “Our goal is to make the top ten, but for a small school like us to do that

would be like climbing Everest.” QCC qualified for the national tournament after winning the regional competition and finishing fourth at the South Island meet.
