Basking in bumper numbers of strawberries Continued from page 1 Foster says the cooler, more overcast cooling period slowed the development of his crop over the winter months but that had long term benefits, with the strawberries being bigger and having a better flavour. He also said the strawberries he grows in plastic houses, similar to glasshouses have also been a big hit. “It’s always fascinating to see how they grow but the ones under the plastic have been going really well because of the more humid climate under the roof.” Foster says his 35 to 40 tonne crop was a normal size but he said with strawberries so plentiful and North Island raiders getting in on the South Island market also having bumper crops, he would have to lower prices. “We’ve got a lot of what we call secondary fruit as well and with supply being so high we will have to drop prices. “We simply can’t keep up with demand but I could always sell what we have it just depends at what price. With some supermarkets selling strawberries at $2 a punnet, Foster says prices are naturally lower. He said a price war like this wasn’t uncommon in the early days of December. “Lower prices are a result of North Island strawberries coming in to the market but of course things always change in that week before Christmas when things get a bit silly.” Some strawberries in the Waikato were ready to go a month earlier than normal due to a wetter winter that helped growth. Foster said Wednesday’s 20mm of rain did not do any damage to crops but it did keep people away.

Our wet Wednesday By Jacob Page Marlborough received more rain on Wednesday than the entire month of November. Around 21mm of rain fell in the 24 hour period near Woodbourne thanks to a low sweeping across the top of the South Island from the Tasman sea, Metservice communications meteorologist, John Law says. The entire month of November just

20mm of rain fell. Parts of the Marlborough Sounds received twice the amount of rain. Stephens Island received 41mm of rain. “This rain was much needed after an exceptionally dry and windy month in November,” Law says. He also said there was likely to be more wet weather in store through the early part of next week. “This is not totally uncommon for

Marlborough this time of year but we’ll be keeping an eye on things with the hope that it settles down and (Marlborough) gets back to some settled weather early in the new week. Sunday is expected to be a sunny day with a top of 21 degrees Celsius; however Monday sees a return to the rain with a mild temperature of 23.

Top Award for medic Blenheim-based medic Michael Cocker has been named the inaugural recipient of the Gordon Watt Memorial Award for the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) top medic Warrant Officer Cocker has served for 37 years in the RNZAF. Throughout his career he has embodied excellence and the core values of comradeship, commitment and courage. He has been deployed on several missions including to Bougainville, East Timor, Kyrgystan and to Indonesia in the wake of the Boxing Day tsunami. Cocker was presented the award at the Ohakea Air Base by Operational Support Commander Group Captain, Colin Marshall, and the Watt family. He said he was honoured and privileged to be named as the inaugural award recipient. “When I joined in 1977 my Warrant Officer was Sergeant Watt’s former boss and he instilled in us the values and ethos of those soldiers who fought in the Vietnam War. I’ve spent my whole career trying to live up to their standards so to find out I was the award recipient was amazing.” Watt, a medic orderly remains the only RNZAF service member killed on active service overseas since World War II. He was killed by a land mine in Vietnam on March 1, 1970. “I’ve been fortunate to deploy to countries where medical assistance has made a real

Dairy farmers to feel pinch By Jacob Page Marlborough dairy farmers will have to tighten their belts while Marlborough as a province will feel the effect of Fonterra slashing the milk price, according to Marlborough Federated Farmers dairy chairperson, Sharon Parkes. Fonterra cut its farm-gate milk price forecast for the 2014-15 season from $5.30 a kilo of milk solids to $4.70/kg, on Wednesday, amid ongoing global dairy price weakness, that is particularly affecting milk powder. Parkes said Marlborough dairy farmers would find thing challenging.

inbrief

“Most dairy farmers will find this to be tough as a number of expenses have already gone out for the year. “Fertilisers, silage crops hopefully have already been made

with maize crops already in,” Parkes says. “Nothing extra will be bought this year so (Blenheim) will feel it eventually. Only the bare necessities will be bought.”

Parkes says many local will farmers were expecting a decrease but would have been shocked at the eventual outcome. “Farmers have known that this was coming but I am sure they did not expect it to go so low. “Some farmers were expecting under $6 but not well under $5. Farmers need to talk to their business partners... and plan well for the rest of this season and also the next season. Farmers must still feed their animals as well as possible. Unfortunately the World market will take some time to come right.

Power was out for about 30 minutes for some residents in Blenheim, on Wednesday morning. The outage, which began around 10.45am affected Parker St, Hutcheson St, Budge St and Dillons Point Rd.

By Adam Poulopoulos The new owners of the Knightsbridge Court Motor Lodge are hoping their new start will allow them to spend more time with their one-year-old son. Amy and Richie Dickens have moved from Christchurch to take the position. It is the couple’s first foray into motel ownership. Amy, a former Marlborough Girls’ College pupil, was a resource management planner in Christchurch, while Richie was working as an E-commerce manager. Their first day at the Middle Renwick Road motel was November 24. Richie says the change of lifestyle was to allow the couple to see their son Liam more often. “For me personally, I missed a lot of stuff while Amy was home with him. “It was getting to the point where we were going to have to put him in care while we both worked.” The move has also helped Amy move closer to her parents, who live in Marlborough.

The couple had been looking for their own business for a few years. They first started looking at motels midway through last year, before stumbling on

WONDERFUL TEACHER

KIDS AREN’T TO BLAME

Yes i agree about police on the rd dictating the laws, the one major fact is revenue gathering, there is two cops that I know of who hit up every second week around the intersection of maxwell/alabama road pulling car’s up left right & centre making their quotas for that week! Bullying by them is a crime against the taxpayer! yes we know the police do a fine job in all things they are paid for but that’s not one of them, go fight crime but leave the general public alone.

I would like to give the biggest thank you to the most wonderful teachers Mrs Hebbard! you have done an amazing job with J this year, with all the challenges he has had, no amount of words can thank you for your dedication, kindness and understanding, you go above and beyond and it means the world to us, you are one in a million!

There will always be those who waste $$’s on booze, drugs kfc etc but what ya gunna do?? Their kids aren’t to blame, they don’t deserve to go hungry.

FREEDOM CAMPERS Well done council, we will now see a new shower/toilet block built in the back of the I- Site opposite the new camper parks and best of wifi from the I-site server for the tourists. Please keep the historic station, new cafe and main bus stop free of daily/nightly soiling and obstruction. Will the I-site staff clean it up each morning? not on their life, they will only be promoting the facility.

The council usually have lights on a REAL tree in Seymour Sq. Who needs a artificial one any way? Let the shop owners do their own thing in town centre - might be interesting, as each would try out do the others.

THANKS BOOTS N ALL Boots n all, thank u for such great friendly service. Always a good job at an affordable price.

Thanks to J & I Cattermole for opening your garden again to help raise funds for the Simply The Breast Dragon boat ladies. Great event and a worthy cause, well done.

Healy nears finish Fairhall School teacher Denyse Healy is on the cusp of completing a teacher fellowship programme to help develop their science teaching skills in schools. Healy is studying viniculture and oenology at The New Zealand Institute for Plant & Food Research She is one of 11 primary school teachers are close to completing the Teacher Fellowship programme to help develop their science teaching skills. The teachers have been spending the final two terms of 2014 as Primary Science Teacher Fellows, under a scheme administered by the Royal Society of New Zealand and funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. Around 150 teachers have been through the Primary Science Teacher Fellowship programme, since it began in 2009. “The goal is for these teachers to gain the knowledge and confidence to become the science curriculum leaders within their school,” says Richard Meylan, Manager – Public Engagement and Education at the Royal Society of New Zealand. “One of the conditions of the Fellowships is that the principal and school must be fully behind the teachers and willing to make science a focus for the school in the year following the Fellowship. Healy’s course involves field, winery and laboratory research and gives her a better understanding of disease and pest management as well as wine fermentation dynamics.

I love to laugh so maybe Joan Rivers, Graham Norton and Ricky Gervais. What would you spend your last $100 on? Most probably food for my boys. What’s next on your wish list? A good old kiwi camping holiday with no TV, no internet, no games but amenities of course.

Business fast and furious Business has been fast and furious for Mag & Turbo owners Darrell and Tina Bate who opened their new workshop and showroom on Grove Road last Saturday. “The opening was massive, there were so many people who came and had a look around. It was quite overwhelming for us and even the crew that came from around the country, they were really impressed,” he says. Since then, business has been steady with plenty of sales inquiries and the workshop gaining a good momentum. “There’s definitely been plenty of interest with loads of positive feedback,” Darrell says. “A lot of people have commented on how rapt they were to see Mag & Turbo finally come to Blenheim.” The wheel and tyre showroom, “the jewel in the crown”, as Darrell describes it, has the whole spectrum of products on display, including tyres for passenger and four-wheel drive vehicles. “That’s the beauty of Mag & Turbo, we can fit a whole new set of wheels and tyres, or simply replace one or two tyres,” he says. The ability to finance with Finance Now has also been a major drawcard, with Darrell

Orange for a new room A Blenheim boy who was given three months to live nine years ago will get a bedroom makeover thanks to Marlborough tradies with big hearts. The Child Cancer Foundation has nominated Braden Mason who suffers from a

rare form of inoperable cancer ependemoma. The illness has affected Braden’s brain and spine to the point where he is no longer able to walk. His parents have purchased their first home and it is time for Braden to get a new look

room to match his new surroundings. The 16-year-old’s favourite colour, orange, is likely to feature heavily in the completed look as well as his favourite type of car, Lamborghini. Painter Sandy Knight is overseeing the project and

looking to get as many businesses involved as possible. While the key is to makes Braden’s dream come true, the addition of wheelchair ramps is another important feature to try to improve his mobility. The makeover will be happening in January.

Puppies are NOT just for Christmas. Are you prepared for the new arrival?

Puppies love to chew on all sorts of things, it is important to get them their own toys, small stuffed toys or squeaky toys.

Planning and preparation for puppy care, routine, responsibility, exercise and rules are all very important and requires patience.

Remember that you are legally responsible for your dog and you must take all responsible steps to ensure it does not endanger, intimidate, injure or otherwise cause distress to any persons.

Puppies are cute. However they grow very quickly. Dogs generally live for about 11 years – are you prepared for this responsibility!

Puppies continually develop behavioural patterns so socialising is vital, this helps puppies learn acceptable behaviour and gain confidence.

Puppies are adorable – how suitable is your home? This new environment needs to be safe to live, play and explore in.

Proudly brought to you by the Marlborough District Council Animal Control in conjunction with the SPCA.

Mall’s grand opening

Ashleigh Meadowcroft of Antarctic Yoghurt welcomes people to their grand opening on Sunday.

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk There is something very exciting planned for Mariners Mall in Picton this Sunday. The mall is hosting its ‘grand opening day’ to showcase three if its newest additions, Shipwrecks, Antarctic Yoghurt and Red Salt Cafe, Bar and Restaurant. The event kicks off at 10am and runs through to 2pm, and will feature live music, free food samples, craft stalls and clowns, Father Christmas, face painting and a huge amount of prizes and giveaways. Up for graps will also be a food hamper, Scenic Hotel dinner vouchers and a grand prize of a night’s accommodation for two at any Scenic Hotel Group property with bubbles on arrival and breakfast. For those who have been waiting to see the newly expanded Shipwrecks, you will not be disappointed as entry will be free during the grand opening. Shipwrecks is the first commercial children’s play area in Marlborough, and has already proved a hit with families since its opening earlier in the year. The mall’s newest addition, Antarctic Yoghurt, will be officially opened and the public is encouraged to sample the range of frozen yoghurts and sorbets on offer. Also new to the mall is the Red Salt Cafe, Bar and Restaurant. Manager and head chef Ashley Guy, assistant manager Ashleigh Meadowcroft and their team will be welcoming people and tempting them with their new and delicious summer menu. Mariners Mall was first opened in 1987 and is owned by Earl and Lani Hagaman, who have also been involved with the recent redesign.

Picton Christmas parade highlight and star of the show, Father Christmas is set for this Sunday’s event.

Picton sees seal pups Picton is been an unexpected home to several seal pups this week Picton Department of Conservation ranger Wendy Sullivan says the newly weaned pups can prove quite adventurous. “One pup ventured 250m up Wellington St while another checked out the playground on the foreshore. “The closest seal breeding colony is the Stephens and Trio Islands, although it is possible they have travelled as far as Kaikoura. “They are looking a bit skinny as still learning the hunting techniques that will put them in good stead for the rest of their lives. DOC is asking people to keep 10m away from the pups at all times and to keep dogs under control as they need their rest. Right: One of the seal pups that have made themselves comfortable in Picton over the past week.

Christmas elves at last year’s Picton Christmas parade.

Picton Christmas parade Just when you thought the parade excitement was over, Picton is set to host its annual Christmas parade and concert this Sunday starting at 2:30pm. The concert will be held on the Picton Foreshore and there

will be face painting and fun balloons for children, and food and drinks available for purchase. The prizes for the ‘best community floats’ and the ‘best business floats’ will be awarded around 2:45pm.

Grovetown memorial A memorial is to be set up at Grovetown School to remember those from the area who lost their lives in The Great War. The memorial, set up with assistance from the Fields of Remembrance Trust, will feature 10 crosses marked with the names of the 10 Grovetown School soldiers who passed away, and a newly repainted monument, which cur-

rently sits on the school grounds. The 10 are among the 922 soldiers from around Marlborough who lost their lives in World War One. Similar memorials are being set up in different communities around Marlborough as recognition of the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings.

Back: Marlborough RSA vice-president Rod Shoemark, president John Forrest and Mayor Alistair Sowman and front: Grovetown School siblings Abbie Large, 8, and Thomas Large, 9.

Where were you?

inbrief

As we get closer to Christmas its human nature to look back over the past year and remember what we’re thankful for. From a New Zealand sport point of view, there has been no shortage of candidates. Despite all the golden moments from the Commonwealth Games, the All Blacks’ season, Lydia Ko’s growth, our rowing supremacy and the juggernaut that is Valerie Adams, one moment sticks out beyond the rest. Much like the Melbourne Cup, Brendon McCullum’s triple-ton stopped a nation. Wellingtonians flocked to the Basin Reserve in work attire, cheering every ball he negotiated. For cricket tragics

ATHLETICS The Marlborough Harriers senior athletics group have their final meet on Tuesday before the Christmas break. They meet again on January 6.

FOOTBALL The Nelson Marlborough Falcons have gone equal top of the ASB Youth League standings with a 2-1 win over fellow table-toppers Waitakere United in Auckland. The Falcons have two round-robin matches to go. They play Auckland City in Nelson on Sunday.

the cut shot he played to bring it up has become one of those ‘where were you?’ moments. For new Sun reporter Jacob Page, the moment represents one of the great near-misses. Based at the Basin for the first three days of the test, he saw the Black Caps completely outplayed by India. Halfway through the third day New Zealand was 94/5, about 150 runs away from making India bat again. McCullum brought up his century by the close of play, but the rearguard action couldn’t last forever. He left Wellington and, less than two days later, started kicking himself. It was a special moment – an individual reaching 300 for New

Zealand in a test match was one of the last great unscaled peaks of our summer game. McCullum was hardly the most likely candidate – consistently inconsistent, brash and overly aggressive – all that faded away. It took him 559 balls and nearly 13 hours to compile his masterpiece. But the whole experience was much more than that. It had been 23 years since Martin Crowe made 299 at the same ground, and with McCullum’s achievement the two-decade wait for redemption became cathartic rather than crippling. Hadlee’s 9/52 is still the bowling benchmark – will it ever be beaten?

SPORTS TALK With ... Adam Poulopoulos

Freeman loses lead Marlborough driver Dyson Freeman had a difficult weekend at the third round of the South Island Formula Ford Series in Invercargill on Sunday. After having problems with his gearbox, Freeman could only qualify 13th for the three-race weekend. After finishing sixth and eighth in the first two races, a DNF in the final race saw him lose his lead in the Class Two standings to Michael Collins from Christchurch. Freeman’s next meeting is from January 16-18 at Ruapuna, before the series moves back to Invercargill for the penultimate meet the next weekend. The final round is in Timaru at the end of March.

Sheat sets records Young sprinter Lucy Sheat broke a slew of records at the NZ Secondary Schools Champs over the weekend. Sheat broke the senior, junior and youth Women’s Tasman Centre 200 metre records, running 24.90 seconds.

Marchers second in South Island Blenheim’s Shontae Allstars under-12 marching team has set its sights on the national championships in March after finishing second at the South Island event, in Dunedin at the weekend. Co-coach Natasha McCracken said the team was pumped up to put in a good performance with their display march and delivered the ideal performance. The team has been going a lot better this year and I could just tell while we were waiting to go out there that they wanted to show what they could do with their (three minute) routine.” The national event will be held in Christchurch.
