Nikkita Hanaray cannot wait to get rid of her “winter coat” of hair and with good reason.

The 10-year-old who has had three women in her immediate family suffer from breast cancer will shave it all off in the name of charity on Friday.

Her Nana died from the disease when Nikkita was a baby, while her aunty, who is based in Perth, has just finished treatment and mum, Ronnie, was diagnosed in July and is undergoing treatment at the moment.

“They’re very proud of me because they would not want to do it.

Nikkita loves horse riding and art but said she had been inspired to do it.

“I’ve always wanted to do it ever since I found out my mum had cancer.”

“She’s well overdue for a haircut and I’ve been holding off for this,” Ronnie says.

School rules have prevented

Nikkita from getting her head shaved sooner than the day after the end of the year.

Nikkita was hoping to raise $500 and was halfway there.

The free-spirited girl says she had always wanted to have a Mohawk haircut and Friday would be that day.

“I thought they could shave it off in the style of a Mohawk for a bit, we could take some photos and then shave it off,” Ronnie says.

“That way she gets what she wants.”

While sister Erika looks to

grow her hair as long as she can over the summer holidays, Nikkita will share with pride a look similar to her mum.

“I wanted to do something for mum even though I’ll have to find a nice hat to go outside,” Nikkita says.

The head shave will be done at Hair Studio on Maxwell Rd at 12.30pm on Friday.

All funds raised will go to the Marlborough Cancer Society.

By Jacob Page Keep an eye out for a large yellow slide to appear in a neighbour’s backyard soon Burleigh Park is unlikely to have a slide or two of its swing sets back in action until early 2015 after they were stolen sometime last week.

Marlborough District Council reserves and amenities manager Robert Hutchinson says the theft is a frustrating one given the long summer ahead and the potentially long wait for a replacement slide.

“The kids will be gutted,” he says.

The bright yellow slide that is 4m long and between 800cm to 1.2m in height should be easily recognised.

He says the cost of replacing the missing equipment and repairing the damage that has been done at the park is estimated to be more than $4000. But he said, with businesses getting ready to close for Christmas, it would be impossible to get replacement equipment delivered and installed this month.

The slide was a one-off fibreglass product specially made for the site by local business Norski Fibreglass Products Ltd. It is yellow with a white underside.

“Neighbours will have to keep a lookout and see if a bright yellow second-hand slide appears from over a fence.”

Hutchinson speculated a saw was used in the heist.

However he said the chain on the swings would prove useless to anyone who had it.

“I guess someone might be looking to get some chain for a dog lead but it is actually made of cable.

Inquiry into crane collapse inbrief

By Adam Poulopoulos An investigation into what caused a crane to topple over at Blenheim’s ASB Theatre site earlier this week has commenced.

The crane fell onto the Taylor River bank, near the Clubs of Marlborough building, at about 8:30am on Monday.

There were no injuries in the collapse, but the concrete panel the boom was sitting on will be replaced, and some other panels were chipped.

A crane inspector and representatives from WorkSafe New Zealand were due to start their on-site investigation today.

Robinson Construction, who are building the theatre, are interviewing the crane operator and other employees in their own inquiry.

Theatre project manager Tim Smit says he cannot comment on why or how the crane came down until the investigation was complete.

He says the crane has been cordoned off, but work is continuing in other areas of the site.

The 100 tonne crawler crane cannot be moved until the investigation is finished.

When it is, it will be replaced by an 80-tonne crane, also owned by Robinson Construction, which has been based at Grove Mill Winery recently.

No end date has been given for the investigation.

On Thursday a jury in the High Court in Nelson found the man guilty on a total of 35 charges that relate to numerous incidents of serious sexual offending against young and vulnerable female victims.

These included sexual violations by rape, indecent assaults, making objectionable images, supplying Class C drugs and grooming in preparation for his sexual offending.

The man has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced on February 20, 2015.

Mr Moseley says he is unsure what caused the incident, as the crane was not carrying a load when the incident occurred, and there was no wind blowing.

Two new colleges, one site investigated

By Jacob Page The Ministry of Education appears willing to listen to Marlborough’s desire for two new colleges on a combined site.

A letter was presented on Monday night to Marlborough Boys’ College board chairman Tony de Reeper, principal Wayne Hegarty, and also Marlborough Girls’ College board chairman Bernie Rowe and principal Karen Stewart outlining education minister Hekia Parata’s stance.

The letter stated the ministry would prepare a report on the feasibility of a green field site with Marlborough Boys’ and Marlborough Girls’ colleges side-by-side.

Both schools had been in favour of a combined site due to the ability to future proof the

school and because of the tired state of the buildings at both colleges.

The ministry had originally offered three options at various price tags.

The options include relocate one or both schools, so that there were two schools on one site at a projected cost of $51.5 million if it was done on the MGC site.

There was retaining the status quo with some improvements at a projected cost of $10.8 million.

There was also the option of a co-educational centre on the MGC site at a projected cost of $52.6 million.

The step towards a new area is the major plus.

De Reeper said the news was a step in the right direction.

“While it’s no guarantee that this will be the option that will eventually come about, it is pleasing that the ministry has listened to the community’s wishes.

“The ministry has to be commended for listening to us because when we first started this process this wasn’t even (an option) on the table.

“We’ve come a long way.”

De Reeper said he was unsure what involvement the colleges and community would have in the process between now and the report, but he thought they had done as much as they could for now.

The consultation process has taken a year to this point with a feasibility study on a joint site likely by June of next year.

PARKING FEES UP Parking fees in Blenheim are on the increase.

The increases, the first in eight years, will come into force in March.

Councillors agreed to a 30 cent increase in the Blenheim hourly kerbside parking rate, and a 20 cent rise in the off-street rate.

Kerbside parking will be $1.50 per hour, while off-street parking will set shoppers back $1 per hour.

An all-day parking rate of $4 will be offered at all pay and display car parks.

By Adam Poulopoulos A born-and-raised Marlborough farmer is looking forward to beginning her term as the Top of the South’s representative in the Rural Women New Zealand National Council.

Melva Robb was notified of her election at the council’s national conference in Rotorua last month.

Growing up in the Pelorus Sounds on a beef and sheep farm, Melva joined Rural Women in 1968.

Two decades later she moved to the Kenepuru Sound, before returning to the Pelorus in 2008.

In between times she has been president of the Marlborough Rural Women body, and currently has the role of secretary.

Now, Melva works in the Sounds Reflection gift shop, and manages a beef and sheep plot in the Waihopai Valley with her sister.

She says it was an honour to be picked to represent the region.

“Another lady stood against me and the position is not something to be taken lightly.

“To have the support of the majority was fantastic.”

In a national initiative, Rural Women sent about 4000 books to the islands after several schools were lost during the floods earlier this year.

Her second award, a shield, was awarded for an essay she wrote on an unforgettable pet, a cat named Good Omer.

“When we were in the sounds we lived in a guest house, and the cat always used to greet people,” she says.

Melva’s two-year council term begins in January.

Toy run spreads cheer Story and photos by Celeste Lodewyk The wind was chilly but spirits were high for the charity Toy Run held by the Marlborough Branch of the Ulysses Club last Saturday.

Participants met at Renwick, displaying their bikes and talking to the public who went along for a look, before convoying to Blenheim.

Despite numbers being down by 50 percent compared to last year due to Nelson holding their toy run the same day and the cooler weather, it was still deemed a success.

“It was great to have so many non members turn up, it’s what we encourage,” club member Murray Brooks says.

“We were also thrilled to see members of the public come along and donate toys, so a big thank you to the community.”

There was everything from scooters and vintage motorcycles through to Can Am trikes and other newer models.

Toy Run leader and club member Kelvin Watson dressed as Father Christmas much to the delight of the children, and says taking part in charity runs was “hugely enjoyable”.

“It’s a great cause and to be able to help people in times of need makes me very happy,” he says.

Kennard to ride in WRC again Blenheim-based co-driver John Kennard will be calling the notes alongside Kiwi rally ace Hayden Paddon in the World Rally Championship (WRC) again in 2015.

Kennard has been with the Geraldine based 27-year-old driver for nine years and the duo will contest an expanded

The duo with return to Hyundai where they had success in this season.

The programme will comprise of a minimum of nine events, which gives Paddon and Kennard more race time

than ever in the WRC. The nine events is up from six that they competed in during 2014.

“It’s fantastic to have this expanded opportunity to continue our development within the great team we’ve already come to know.” Kennard says.

The duo finished 14th this

season but managed their first WRC stage win.

Paddon returns to Europe mid-January to commence testing for the Swedish rally.

Paddon and Kennard will still participate in the pre-event recce to build experience for the future.

Re: Cruise ship Dear Ed, Following on from the letter in 10 December issue, I too am a regular stall holder at the cruise ship market on the foreshore in Picton.

It is sad that the local MDC Marlborough 4 Fun and other groups, are not into promoting the market.

Also the local shop keepers in Picton are not in favour of a market and have tried many times to have us closed.

I think we should all work together to promote Picton but perhaps I have a strange view.

When the market was on the foreshore by the Memorial steps we seemed to be more into the Picton spirit and I think that was possibly a

better place for a market.

It dissapoints me that the Lions work so hard to help the stall holders and to promote the market only to be shot down by some, mainly local business people.

I know these people see that we don’t pay rent taxes etc but do they ever stop to think that each day we have a stall we contribute to the Lions who in turn have that money to purchase things to help the Picton community.

I’m sure these business people don’t contribute to the Lions or any other such group, each time they open their shop door.

No Christmas spirit Dear Ed, I find it amusing that the council and Marlborough Lines aren’t happy to just pay for some nice Christmas decorations and a tree in Blenheim’s public spaces, and yet I read about members of the community donating their time, their own decorations and retail spaces to create beautiful Christmas grottos.

It amazes me that no matter how cash strapped people are, and generally people who are paying the council and Marlborough Lines for rates and power usage, they still dig deep to create something magical for the community.

Why couldn’t the council have thought of doing this? Buying some decorations, using an empty shop space in town, find someone to dress as santa, play some carols and do something for the community.

If the people can do it, what’s their excuse?

By Adam Poulopoulos Having started campaigning in the last millennium, 94-year-old Marygold Miller finally has her pedestrian crossing.

Marygold cut a ceremonial ribbon with Mayor Alistair Sowman on Monday to unveil the courtesy crossing, situated outside Ashwood Park Retirement Village, where she lives.

The crossing was completed as part of the Middle Renwick Road roundabouts project.

Marygold, who had been applying to see a crossing put in place for 15 years, says she is delighted one is now in place.

“For people like me, or for people on a scooter, it’s better than a zebra crossing because you can get to the middle of the road and take a break.

“I feel the cooperation of Marlborough Roads, the council and myself shows working together can achieve a lot.”

House dream a reality Six years of hard saving pays off Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim couple Jayson and Nessie Cruz have special cause to celebrate today, after receiving the keys to their brand new home.

What makes their story unique is the fact that they are first home buyers, purchasing a brand new home using savings from six years of hard work and sacrifice.

And it’s not only Jayson and Nessie who are thrilled with their accomplishment, their agent Sue Duckworth of Mark Stevenson First National Real Estate was too.

“It’s the first time for me in 30 years that a first home buyer has purchased a new home, so I was so thrilled for them.

“With so few first home buyers coming through it was certainly an incredible achievement, and I believe they are an inspiration to other young couples,” she says.

Jayson, originally from the Philippines, has lived in Blenheim since the age of 12, and admits he is a big spender.

So when he met wife Nessie, also from the Philippines, he says he made the best decision by giving her control of their finances.

“She does the budget better and I knew she would keep us on track with our savings,” he laughs.

which was greatly helped by them living with Jayson’s mother.

They paid off their debts, and before they knew it they had a $60,000 deposit.

Jaysen’s mother knew how important it was for them to purchase their own home, so she gifted them money toward their deposit.

“She has been amazing to us and without her support our dream of owning this beautiful home wouldn’t be realised,” he says.

The couple went to ANZ’s Blenheim branch, was approved instantly for home

finance and set about finding their dream home.

“We got our finance first so we knew how much we could spend,” Jayson says.

“What made the process easy was that they knew what they wanted and they came prepared so it was pretty straight forward,” Sue adds.

“We can’t say enough about Sue, she was so helpful, explained everything to us and took care of it all and made it a great experience,” Nessie says.

Jayson and Nessie visited a few open homes but fell

‘in love’ with one in Buick Street, and within three days the house was theirs.

“Anyone who k nows me would agree I am not much of a handyman, so we needed something that was new and low maintenance,” Jayson laughs.

“So for us this house was a straight 10 out of 10.

“It was a nervous wait as the deal was multi-offer but once it was all finalised we were over the moon.”

“It’s going to be a great Christmas for our family.

A new home in time for the New Year,” Nessie adds.

Busy Sunday in Picton Picton came out in force on Sunday for the Mariners Mall grand opening day on Sunday.

Hundreds visited the mall to celebrate the newly expanded Shipwrecks playground, the unveiling of Antarctic Yoghurt and Red Salt Cafe, Bar and Restaurant, and get their hands on some prizes and free samples.

Santa Claus also made a guest appearance, and proved as popular as usual.

Later in the day, locals lined the streets to watch the floats travel past as part of the Christmas parade.

Young author Rhys Bloomfield’s recent achievement is still very unknown in the Blenheim community.

What readers will soon find out about this shy 19-year-old is that there is serious potential for his writing, and judging by his first book ‘The Maid, the Man and the Master’, it is a storyline that may soon capture a lot of attention.

Rhys talks to Celeste Lodewyk about his first book.

For this former Marlborough Boys’ College student, writing has been a recently awaken talent, and he completed his first book in October.

Rhys left school after year 11 due to bullying and is now writing full time with the view of having more books published.

He admits this was the first time he had worked on a book, and with no formal educational training he felt it came “naturally”.

“I would sit down every night at the computer and just start typing.”

Once the first few paragraphs were down the rest of the story flowed.

“I have been thinking about this story for a few years and one day I just started” “I worked on it from start to finish, rather than writing bits here and there.

“It’s really just been a build up of ideas, no research or outside influence,” he says.

Once completed Rhys sent a copy to a freelance proof reader before sending it to local publisher John Penney of Prisma Print.

John described Rhys’s book as an achievement for someone of his age.

“I thought he had done very well,” he says.

Supporting Rhys along the way was his family who have also read and enjoyed the book.

When I was first handed a copy of The Maid, the Man and the Master, its stormy and mysterious cover art gave me the first hint of what I found to be an unexpectedly dark, yet gripping tale of suffering and survival.

The 309 page book entails the encounter between main characters Jake, a struggling 21-year-old author, and his millionaire high school friend, Eric.

Jake is offered live-in work at Eric’s mysterious mansion with a sizeable allowance, and finds three maids also living there.

It isn’t long before Jake discovers the outwardly pleasant Eric to be arrogant and inflicting pain upon the maids for his own pleasure.

Jake forms a bond with the favoured maid, Amelia, and makes it his mission to free her and the others from the terror of the mansion.

But along the way he finds himself locked in Eric’s ‘secret punishment’ room,

and he soon learns that he has to play by the rules in order to save everyone’s lives.

Like all good stories, the hero provides a great ending and you find yourself almost ready to forgive Eric of his sins.

Rhys has already begun work on the sequel and plans to make it a trilogy.

“Throughout the trilogy you will see the characters pushed to the limits before prevailing, and along the way there will be new characters introduced.

Looking back at Christmas and New Year babies

By Celeste Lodewyk It is that time of year again when expectant parents due around Christmas and New Year wait with anticipation of having Marlborough’s first Christmas and New Year babies.

Looking back at last year, Blenheim couple Chloe and Daniel Rarity celebrated their Christmas in hospital giving birth to their second child, son Hunter Jay Rarity.

He was born 9:09pm weighing 10lb 5oz on December 25, 2013 , which was his due date.

Chloe says what made their day even more special was arriving at the maternity ward and finding a bassinet decorated in Christmas theme.

Baby Hunter was “the best gift ever” for proud sister Dakota.

Funnily enough, Chloe knew the parents of Marlborough’s New Year baby.

Anthony and Natasha Jones welcomed their second child, baby girl Wynter Rose Jones at 10:40pm weighing 6lb 14oz on January 1, making her Marlborough’s first baby for 2014.

Dakota Rarity was thrilled when her baby brother Hunter arrived on Christmas Day.

Natasha Jones welcomed her daughter Wynter on January 1, making her Marlborough’s first baby for 2014.

Natasha described it as “a date we won’t forget”.

“We were secretly hoping Wynter would be the first baby for 2014,” she

says.

Wynter was also welcomed by adoring big brother William.

While the Sun will still be visiting the maternity ward during the Christmas break, parents are welcome to send in their birth announcements to babies@blenheimsun.co.nz, and they will be published on the Babies page in January’s publications.

Sunflower soars at Witherlea Enthusiasm for gardening has literally grown at one Marlborough kindergarten over the last few months.

Witherlea Kindergarten was named last week as Marlborough’s winner of the Tallest Sunflower award, in a competition run by landscape supplier Daltons.

Witherlea was one of three k i nd e rga r t e n s f r om t h e Marlborough Kindergarten Association taking part, with their winning sunflower plant measured in at a healthy 2.08 metres.

Witherlea kindergarten teacher Cynthia Ragni said gardening was an important part of the kindergarten’s programme.

“Our garden at Witherlea Kindergarten continues to inspire and educate our children in all facets of the natural world.

“We believe it is so important for our current and future generations.”

Daltons general manager Colin Parker was quick to send his congratulations.

“I’d like to congratulate Witherlea Kindergarten as well as thank every child and the Marlborough Kindergarten Association members for taking part. I hope they enjoyed the project as much as we did bringing it to them.”

Eighteen months ago, Daltons came up with an initiative encouraging kindergarten kids to learn more about gardening by growing their own sunflowers.

The kindergartens received a free sunflower starter pack containing Daltons Potting Mix, biodegradable pots, Kings Seed skyscraper sunflower seeds, an extra long measuring tape, growing guide and growth chart.

The Link Pathway was the big winner in the recent round of funding from the Canterbury Community Trust.

Marlborough projects received $444,283.

“The Canterbury Community Trust has committed $73,000 over the next twelve months to support the work on the pathway link from Picton to Ngakuta Bay, which is on top of $10,000 provided as seed funding in 2013. This project stood out to trustees as a community-based, community-led initiative that has involved a significant number of volunteers who are keen to see this project come to fruition. We believe it will not only benefit its local communities but will also provide significant returns through tourism for the region,” chief executive of The Canterbury Community Trust, Louise Edwards says.

Old mates back together Friends Rosalie Vigil and Lynda Crawshaw have been reunited in Picton, eight years after they last saw each other.

Rosalie has returned to visit Lynda as part of her tour around New Zealand, and arrived on Friday night.

Lynda says although the pair Skype each other once a month, it was no substitute for time spent together.

“There were a lot of tears at the airport, that’s for sure.”

The pair met in 1959 when in form one at Bohally Intermediate, and instantly became good friends.

“We seemed to gravitate towards each other. I’m

not sure why but we did,” Rosalie said.

However, the pair lost contact after Rosalie got married, and left to America in 1971.

Twenty years ago the pair got back in touch.

This week, they have been visiting old friends, looking at old photos and visiting old haunts, like Rosalie’s old family home on Battys road.

“It’s nice seeing old friends and that everyone’s relatively well,” Rosalie says.

The Queen Charlotte College touch team finished 18th out of 20 teams at the National Touch Championships in Auckland recently.

Day two started brightly with a 4-2 win over St Andrews. But after losing their next three games they were placed into the playoffs for places 17-20.

A 7-6 win over Western Springs put them into the playoff for 17th, where St Andrews gained a measure of revenge, winning 7-1.

Volleyball finals Marlborough Volleyball’s Subway Spikers’ & Premiers’ School’s Competition competed in their finals last Friday, and spectators were treated to some great volleyball play.

The Premier Division Two final was a rematch of last week’s game, and St Mary’s came out fighting making for a very close point-to-point game.

Both teams have very hard serving and were enthusiastic about attacking the ball.

Excellent chasing, communication and rallies were consistent throughout the game.

St Mary’s showed passion and aggression – which is a perfect mixture when paired with skills

and these traits won them the game. Set scores were 25-21, 25-19 and 22-25.

Premier Div One final was played between Bohally #YOLO’s, who had only lost one game this term and the Fairhall Phoenix.

The first set was a very close good serving set, with hard overarm serving from Jack Winstanley of Bohally and Sophie Whittall, Mereana Ave and Tom Remacha of Fairhall.

The boys from Bohally could be an outstanding team if they had a little of the passion that the girls from Fairhall have for the game of volleyball.

This was what gained the girls

victory and title in two sets; 25-21 and 25-18.

Trophies were handed out to all the winning teams and certificates to all the players in a prize-giving after each round.

Marlborough Junior Volleyball is once again holding the popular Volleyfest on January 22 and 23, designed for keen volleyballers in the Year 8-10 year age range.

Sponsor needed for champs Sport inbrief

The highlight of the local speedway calendar, the New Zealand Saloon Championships, is just over a month away, and a sponsor is being sought for the event.

The meet is being held at Eastern States Speedway on Friday, January 23 and Saturday, January 24.

Locals Paddy North and Robbie Flood are likely to be among the field of 50, which will include the best drivers from around the country.

As part of the package the naming rights sponsor will also be included in advertising and editorial content leading up to the event, in programmes and documents produced by Eastern States Speedway, as well as displays at the business and complimentary tickets to the event.

The event will also be televised free to air.

To decide who gets naming rights for the meet Eastern States Speedway is holding a raffle at their Christmas meeting on Sunday, December 21.

Entries for the raffle close on December 20.

Athletes claim Hester Shield Marlborough’s junior athletes comprehensively took out the Hester Shield interclub meet in Blenheim over the weekend.

About 120 athletes from Nelson, Richmond, Takaka, Motueka and Marlborough took part in the event at Athletic Park.

Richmond narrowly won the preceding meet, the Winstone Cup, at Saxton Field last month.

The five clubs meet again on February 15 to contest the Russell Cup. Marlborough Children’s Athletics representative Steph Southey says the meets held in Marlborough are a great way for families new to athletics to get a taste of the sport, before committing to travelling to meets outside the region.
