Marlborough Women’s Refuge manager Rachel Black says she was amazed at the amount of donations given, and excited for the families who would be receiving them. “Finances are tight for many families and the pressure of having to pay rent as well as buy Christmas presents really does affect them. “Domestic violence does increase before and after Christmas and the children we have coming through are of all ages. “Anything we can do to make things better for the kids, mum and the family has got to

Kits for Kids coordinator Mary Hart says she was ‘blown away’ and left feeling emotional after seeing what the community had donated. “I do this work for the kids, and to know that these foster kids who are going through are difficult time will have something that is special for them, this really makes me happy. “I don’t know if I could thank everyone enough for their kindness and willingness to support this cause,” she says. Warm Christmas expected A fine and warm Christmas day is likely for Blenheim but everyone will have to survive some weekend rain first. MetService media and communications meteorologist, John Law says a long-range forecast suggests Blenheim will have a high of 25 degrees Celsius for the big day buffeted by a north easterly

breeze. “There will be wet weather this weekend but there is meant to be a more settled pattern come the start of the week.” Law says a large high is likely to station itself over the east of the country which should see temperatures return

to summer levels in time for the big day. “It should bring the kind of weather that the people of Marlborough want to stick around.” Law says as long as wind and atmospheric conditions stay the same, the summer weather should last well close to the start of 2015.

I really like putting my own mark on things that I draw or paint,” says Lilah, who screamed with excitement when she discovered she had won the competition. Mum Heather Bowers says Lilah saves all her pocket money to buy art supplies, and makes paintings and drawings for friends and family constantly. “She immediately wanted to enter the competition, and re-

COOK STRAIT SWIM Wellington teenager Anna Plunkett became the 93rd person to complete a swim of the Cook Strait, on Tuesday. The 17-year-old from the Worser Bay Life Saving Club followed Barrie Devonport who made history as the first person in modern times to swim Cook Strait in 1962.

SHELLFISH CLOSURE By Jacob Page The new leading lady of arguably Blenheim’s oldest rock band, Condition Red, had not started school when the band was a regular act at bars and clubs in the early 1990s. However, 25-year-old Shelley Fraser is more than holding up her end of the deal with these veteran musicians. Fraser was plucked from the relative obscurity of a karaoke night three years ago and had her arm twisted to play with the band after they lost lead vocalist, Steve McManus to an ear issue. The band which has only performed a couple of times over the past two years is preparing for a New Year’s Eve gig at the Royal Hotel.

Founding members, Cyril Dawson, Steve “Bunty” Kennett and Richard ‘Rizzo’ McGarry say they’ve welcomed Fraser in with open arms. Fraser is roughly the same age as the founding members were when the band formed. “She might be a lot younger than us but I knew the moment I heard her voice that I wanted her to come down and sing with us,” McGarry says. “She fits right in and while we can’t do some of the things we could do with (McManus), Shelley gives us other strengths and a new array of songs we can play.” Mixed in with songs from The Eagles, Led Zeppelin and Dragon, comes Shelley’s ability to perform songs from bands like the Cranberries.

“It was a big thing for me to try out because I’ve done some stage and theatre singing but nothing quite like this,” Fraser says. “I just need to learn more songs but I’m learning so much.” Dawson, the band’s drummer said the longevity of the group could be attributed to the enjoyment they got and they hoped Fraser could add to the mix. “It’s great to see people who used to follow us around back in the day coming back all these years later and bringing their own kids,” Dawson says. “The nerves are always there before you start because you’re not sure how people will respond but I’m gaining plenty of confidence.”

MOONEY TO COACH AGAIN Former New Zealand junior tennis coach Michael Mooney says he will get back into coaching in Blenheim early next year. After stepping away from the sport two years ago, Mooney says he had two undisclosed locations in for his sessions that he would run part-time. He says he would train anyone but would focus on the six to 12-year-old age groups.

By Adam Poulopoulos Marlborough man Mike Milligan’s severe back injury has made putting socks on difficult, so he has created a machine to help. The Sockson machine, manufactured in Marlborough by Indac, went on sale earlier this month. The user rolls their socks onto the machine’s Perspex cups, which are then positioned at an appropriate height for the person to put their feet through. The whole process is completed while standing. The machine has been trialed in Marlborough, and Mike has attended shows around the world to help him come up with the finished design. Both regular and compression socks can be used on the machine. Mike says he has had back trouble most of his life, brought on initially by building and rugby. However, his inspiration really began

in 2007, when a car crash left him with a broken back. Unable to put socks on for two years, he began to work on his design. He says the machine helps not just those with back pain, but also tall or obese people or those with joint problems. “It’s a very real problem. For those who can’t do it it’s a very hard thing to do. “Shoes aren’t so bad, but socks go right over the end of the feet.” He says there is nothing like the product anywhere. “It’s hard-wearing, very strong and a goodquality product. “There are lot of aids out there but this is a very serious bit of kit. “There’s no pressure on the back or hips – you just have to be able to lift your feet about a foot in the air.” Right: Mike Milligan demonstrates how to use the Sockson machine.

New crafts shop launched By Adam Poulopoulos A couple who moved to Blenheim in October have launched a crafts store out of their home. Sonia Valentine and husband Dave Rausbatch have moved to Blenheim to be closer to family, and launched Valentine Crafts at the start of the month. The shop, at 1 Whitney Street, sells wool, buttons, needles, crochet hooks and other similar items. They have arrived from Twizel, where they were running Southern Alps Outdoors. Sonia says the change of business is not as drastic as it seems.

COUNCIL NEWS Notices Wither Hills Farm Park Possum Control Programme Users of the Wither Hills Farm Park are advised that from 1 December 2014 to 30 January 2015, Valley Pest Control Ltd (VPC Ltd) will be undertaking possum control within the Wither Hills Farm Park/ Reserve areas. This operation is being undertaken to lower possum numbers within the Farm Park and Reserve areas to help protect planted and native species and to lower the incidence of infestation into urban areas. The operation will utilise leghold traps as the main control technique, with some live capture cage traps close to urban boundaries. Traps will be checked daily and the public is asked to not interfere with traps, bait or captured animals. Parents are asked to please inform their children if they use the Farm Park of this information. Council’s Water Supplies Plumbosolvent

Many water sources used for public water supplies in New Zealand are plumbosolvent. This means that the water is slightly acidic and can dissolve metals such as lead and copper out of brass fittings, if the tap has not been used for a period of time. Council’s water supplies for Blenheim, Picton, Renwick and Havelock are plumbosolvent. The Ministry of Health requires the following notice to be printed six monthly to advise consumers of this: Ministry of Health – Public Notice Some plumbing fittings have the potential to allow minute traces of metals to accumulate in water standing in the fittings for several hours. Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends that you flush a mug full of water from your drinking-water tap each morning before use to remove any metals that may have dissolved from the plumbing fittings. We are recommending this simple precaution for all households, including those on public and private water supplies.

Draft Marlborough Regional Land Transport Plan 2015-2021 Marlborough District Council is seeking feedback on its Draft Marlborough Regional Land Transport Plan 2015-2021 (the Draft Plan). The Marlborough Regional Land Transport Plan is a critical document for the Marlborough District as it underpins all of the District’s road network and transportation planning and investment priorities over the next six years. The Top of the South councils, in partnership with the New Zealand Transport Agency, have collaborated to develop a joint Draft Regional Land Transport Plan that aims to provide our community with an efficient, safe and resilient road network. Section F outlines the specific issues that each of the three councils face in their region and how they intend to deal with these issues. Each council has developed their own

programme of forward works for the next ten years. Seddon CACTUS Mayor Alistair Sowman presented awards to the Awatere teenagers who are the latest group of Marlborough teens to graduate from the CACTUS Programme Combined Adolescent Challenge Training Unit Support. Amongst the bustle and (I grant you) hassle of Christmas most of us can find a memory that returns each Christmas season. For me it is usually the music which stirs the sentiments and memories of Christmas but I was delighted to enter a business premises last week where I caught the smell of apple and cinnamon which reminded me of a special Christmas I hadn’t thought of in years. For many Christmas’s, before moving to Blenheim, I sang in a small women’s-voices group which performer a lunchtime Christmas Concert annually. It was the very best time of year and when I had the opportunity to perform in a recent concert of Christmas music I could hear the voices of the women I had shared so much music with – and the memories came back as a lovely gift. Creating a memory is not about running yourself ragged preparing ‘super-meals’ or driving yourself to distraction trying to find the perfect gift. It’s about preparing a welcome to family and whoever else may come into your home for that special time of Christmas. You can help someone else create a festive season memory through your warmth & welcome. This is a real gift. Celebrate the whole ‘Christmas thing’ in whatever way is relevant to you but it is how you make other people feel at that time that will remain long after the razzle dazzle. I am very aware that getting the right gift can almost ruin your Christmas so keep it genuine, unique and chosen on the premise that it fits at least one of these criteria – it is useful, it is beautiful or it will have significance then you should ‘have it nailed’! Dental clinic moved The old Seddon dental clinic, which has stood for almost 70 years, has been moved. The idea for a dental clinic was raised in Seddon in 1941, but the build was delayed by World War Two. The building was opened in 1946, in the old headmaster’s garden at Seddon School, before being extended in 1969. It was decommissioned in 2011 as mobile clinics became popular. The Awatere Playcentre will use the land to extend their grounds. The building was put to tender, and a private investor in the Lower Dashwood has purchased it. The dental clinic is lifted off the ground.

No regrets for Jacqueline By Adam Poulopoulos Blenheim’s ‘The Bachelor’ Wild Card contestant says she would go through the same process all over again, even after finishing second in the public vote. Jacqueline Williams, 29, was one of four wild cards from around the country competing for one spot on the show, to be screened next year. She says she is grateful for the support the community showed her. “I’ve had the most amazing support. The whole’s community’s been amazing, and my family the same. “I think they were more disappointed than I was.” She says applying for the show was a great learning experience. “A lot of people said I was so brave doing it, but I’m not really that brave or confident. “If you put yourself in a challenging situation it helps you to grow as a person.” Jacqueline says she and fellow Wild Card contestant Aimee Thomas hope to apply for the Amazing Race should they get the chance. Aucklander Lisa O’Loughlin was announced as the winner live on air in Christchurch on Monday morning. She secured the most votes during the voting period, which began on December 5 and finished on Sunday.

Unique exhibition opens tonight When it comes to art, there’s a particularly passionate group belonging to the Marlborough Art Society. This group of members, including some new faces, will be taking part in a very special exhibition which opens tonight from 6-7pm at the Yealands Estate Marlborough Art Gallery. Titled ‘Members Exhibition’ it runs until January 25. Some of the artists involved are Sally Gill, Walter Scott, Pam Sowerby, Prue Matthews, Karen Neal, Sukarlin, Nikki Roberton and Ron Warnes, with each artist putting up around three pieces into the exhibition. Newcomer and exhibitor Matthew Muir hails from Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf where he ran a community newspaper, art studio and worked as an artist. Another talented member also hailing from Waiheke Island is Heina Petzold, who will be displaying his unique kiln-fired copper/enamel creations. Some of the other mediums that people can expect to see are acrylics, oils, watercolours, scratchboard, a painting on a suitcase, copper etchings by Yvonne Jordan and Diana MacMillan’s ceramic ‘mussel ropes’. The exhibition is a cash and carry concept, so the artworks are able to be taken away at the time, and will be replenished as they are sold. Most artworks are very affordable and range from as low as $50 which would make great Christmas gifts of original artworks.
