Fight for Life By Jacob Page These are precious moments for proud new parents Richard Vuletich and Bex Smith with newborn daughter Amelia after an 18-month battle with cancer that is far from over. For Marlburian, Bex, 35, the daughter of Blenheim community constable Russ Smith and former real estate agent Jackie Herkt, and Northlander, Richard, their daughter’s arrival on January 4 “has been a bright light in a dark time” as Richard continues to battle cancer which sees him largely bed-ridden.

Comebacks and setbacks Continued from page 2 A routine check-up due to a family history of cancer found Richard carried Lynch Syndrome, which is a genetic cancer of the digestive tract. All of sudden the promising cider business Richard was building and the dream early childhood teacher position Bex was working at in Margaret River, Western Australia became a distant memory as the couple returned back to New Zealand to be closer to family. “It’s hard to believe our story even as I’m telling you,” Bex says as she reflects on a period of time that has included a shock diagnosis, two lots of the same surgery, chemotherapy and a cardiac arrest from an adverse reaction to a chemo drug that left Richard in an induced coma. Despite the cardiac arrest which saw Bex perform CPR on him for more than 20 minutes, Richard battled back and by the middle of last year was given the all clear and the couple decided to try to start a family. However, a scan at Christmas time following severe back pain, Richard was found to have a cluster of cancerous lymph nodes surrounding his liver and pushing up against his lower back. Cancer nodes have also been found in both of his lungs. Jackie, Bex’s mother, left Blenheim to move closer to Bex and Richard to provide support after his cardiac arrest. Russ set up a fundraising

Total fire ban starts tomorrow

TWICE WEEKLY

By Jacob Page There will be a total fire ban across Marlborough from tomorrow. The Marlborough District Council has announced the move as the province prepares for its traditional hottest period of weather of the year. The ban, which comes into force at 8am covers land south of the Wairau River including Rarangi down to the Clarence River, except for Molesworth, upper Wairau & Rainbow Valleys that are adminis-

tered under the DOC Zone. The total fire ban will also cover all urban areas of Renwick, Blenheim, Seddon and Ward. All fires in the open within these areas will be banned including enclosed incinerators, pizza ovens, braziers and solid fuel barbecues. The only types of fire exempted from this ban are gas-fired barbecues. The ban will remain in place until such time as the elevated fire risk declines, either through persistent rainfall and/or falling

Principal Rural Fire Officer for the Marlborough Kaikoura Rural Fire Authority (MKRFA), Richard McNamara, says any time a gusty west to nor-westerly blows the fire risk increases, particularly in the dry central Marlborough grasslands and tussock country. “These areas are fuel for fires with large quantities of dead, dry grass and tussock. Combined with the lack of rain, high temperatures and wind, that’s a recipe for fastmoving, dangerous fires,” he says.

Isolated inspiration By Jacob Page Manaroa-based author Marion Day has used her isolated surroundings as inspiration to win yet another award. Day has spent the past five years in the area of the Pelorus Sound and has won the New Zealand Rural Women’s/Ministry of Primary Industries farming stories competition. Her entry was an old-fashioned photo album of over 50 A4 photographic plates to represent Manaroa. Beneath each one she hand wrote captions to create a story on Manaroa, covering industry, life, people and other aspects of the community. In the next month or two, she

will meet with the Minister of Primary Industries in Wellington to receive her award and for press releases. She considers the remoteness of Manaroa and its natural beauty, the sea against mountains, a

great place to do this. Town is a five-hour round trip – a bottle of milk, three hours. “The road is extremely slow and winding, but breathtakingly picturesque. “We are lucky that we retain Rural Delivery Service which plays a key part of living in the isolated outer Sounds. Groceries are ordered over email and delivered twice a week. The postman also picks up items from any Blenheim store that you wish to have brought in.” Day struck success in 2013 with her first full-length adult book, Injun Joe, The Legend of Smoking Joe Collins. The book made it onto the Nielsen’s NZ best-seller list and

Whitcoulls top five sports books bi-monthly list. Day has also made her first foray into eBooks to start 2015. Working with MacKay Books, The Chestnut Mare is now on Amazon Kindle, as is the Heart of the Hunter series. These are 15 separate stories from her popular hunting books ‘Cor Blimey, Mate and Blow Me Socks Off!’ Day is now fully immersed in her first novel. Pipi Splatt is an intense story of a young boy who overcomes much adversity caused by no fault of his own. The book is set for release next year.

Blenheim - bands pre-tour base By Jacob Page The 2015 National Youth Brass Band will be in camp at Blenheim’s Woodbourne Airbase, from January 25 to January 28. The band will perform three concerts in Westport on January 29, Nelson, January 30 and Blenheim on January 31. The young musicians come from all over the country and will be presenting a concert programme entitled ‘Summon the Heroes” which includes a bracket of pieces in remembrance of 100 years since the Gallipoli invasion as well as some arrangements for brass bands of well-known music that will appeal to everyone. Four of them will be fea-

tured as soloists with the band during the tour. The band members are all under 23-years-old and are selected from nationwide auditions of young band members. There is no automatic selection for a place in the band, as each player must audition annually. Many band members have gone on to professional careers in services bands, the NZ Symphony Orchestra, professional conducting and of course the National Band of New Zealand. MOUNTAINBIKE TRACK VICTIM NAMED Police have named the woman who died on a mountainbike track in Blenheim on Sunday as Julie Todd, 56, from Blenheim. A member of the public phoned emergency services at around 11am after she was found near Taylor Pass Rd. It remains unclear whether she died from a fall from her bike or medical emergency. Her death did not appear suspicious and the matter has been referred to the coroner.

MAN CHARGED WITH THREATENING WORKER A 51-year-old Auckland man will face court on February 2, after allegedly threatening a pharmacy employee, in Blenheim on Friday afternoon. The man went into the pharmacy asking for a prescription and when told there was no prescription available he threatened the staff member. Contractors have returned to their full numbers at Marlborough Airport following their holiday break. Normal business resumed yesterday after only a small crew returned to the site on January 7. Recently the rental car booths were completed and occupied, and the parking machine in the carpark will be relocated into the northern end of the rental car building by the end of January. Meanwhile, ground works for the extension to the south are underway. The works are the major part of stage two, the expansion of the passenger lounge and offices. The initial stage of the baggage reclaim area has been closed in, with lining and ceilings installed. The third and final stage of the project is to expand the toilets and the mezzanine floor

The Marlborough RSA advise that effective Thursday 15 January 2015, the last post will be sounded at 1800 hours (6:00 PM) at the Blenheim Cenotaph in Seymour Square each evening and the names of six Marlborough men and women read out from the Marlborough Roll of Honour, who made the ultimate sacrifice as the result of wars or conflicts since the Boer war in 1899. A poppy will also be laid for each and every name read out each evening. This ceremony will continue each and every evening until ANZAC Day, 25 April 2015. The New Zealand and Australian ensigns will be flown at the Blenheim Memorial for the 100 days from 15 January as well. Denis Teeling from the Marlborough District Brass Band who proposed the one hundred last posts as a personal commemorative activity towards the World War one hundred year ANZAC centenary for 2015, will play the Last Post and Rouse, ably backed up by fellow bandsmen to ensure a trumpeter is in attendance each evening. The Marlborough District Brass Band was originally the Nelson Marlborough West Coast Regimental Brass Band and it has had a long association with the District since 1854. All veterans, Ex Service and Serving servicepersons and the public are invited to participate each evening and the MRSA will mark the commencement on Thursday 15 January with a parade (medals may be worn) at the Blenheim Cenotaph to mark the occasion. MRSA will also support the daily events as we are able. It is envisaged that Marlborough youth groups and schools may wish to support this activity by reading out the six Roll of Honour names and laying poppies for them each evening on a rotational basis, over a period such as a week.

Projects in pipeline at Omaka By Adam Poulopoulos A new hangar at the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre is one of the projects planned for the area in the near future. The centre is hosting a flying day on Saturday, January 24, starting at 10am, to raise funds for the hangar. It will feature several aircraft not normally viewable at the airfield, taken from private hangars for the event. The new hangar will house World War Two aircraft, to go with the two currently displaying aircraft from WWI. Aviation Heritage Centre chief executive Jane Orphan says the flying day will be the first of many events held to raise funds. “We’ve got to gather up as much as we can. It’s an expensive process.” She says the new hangar will be larger than the existing ones. “This one will be slightly taller – there will be bigger aircraft and we want to suspend some from the ceiling.” The money is also going towards an upgrade for the centre’s café and foyer area,

Plans are in place that will see the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre expand.

which are being extended to cope with anticipated demand from the new WWII exhibition. Orphan says she hopes the hangar and café extension will be complete in time for the next tourist season. A temporary café extension will be in place in time for the Classic Fighters Airshow over Easter Weekend. Plans for a second new hangar are also in the pipeline, but sufficient funds have not been raised yet. Elsewhere, the Omaka branch extension of the Blenheim Riverside Railway is on course to be completed by late March. Foundations for the station building have been laid, and a concrete platform is being built. When the platform is complete the station building, taken from Kekerangu Railway Station, will be moved in by crane, and 80 more metres of track will be laid. The track’s grand opening could take place on March 21, but the date has not been confirmed.

Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street. Q: Do you shop at the butcher or the supermarket and why?

Amy Moore Blenheim

Dave Oliver Blenheim

The butcher because my friend works there.

Both about equally. I go to the supermarket for convenience and the butcher for quality meat and the personal touch.

Subdivision jumps major hurdle By Jacob Page Colonial Vineyard Ltd chairman Mark Davis says there is relief more than anything after a ruling that allowed a planned subdivision get through another hurdle. Marlborough Aero Club Incorporated and New Zealand Aviation Museum Trust had been battling for five years to have the Burleigh housing development stopped. Following an appeal hearing in Blenheim High Court last August, Justice Lowell Goddard dismissed the appeal in a decision released prior to Christmas. The area in question is more than 21 hectares of flat land planted in sauvignon blanc grapes, framed by by Richardson Avenue, New Renwick Road, and Aerodrome Road. The plan was to build 230 homes on the site. Two of the major concerns were the impact it would have on Omaka airfield and if residents would complain about the noise. However, the ruling dismissed these as issues. “It’s been frustrating that things have been so drawn out, it has cost us a lot of money but this is a major step forward in our plans,” Davis says A reappeal process expires at the end of the month and Davis says if there are no further appeals, rezoning work of the land would start soon.

Gerald Grocott Napier I go to the supermarket but I go to the butcher more often. I prefer the personal touch and the different cuts of meat.

Jenni Nicholls Blenheim I shop at the supermarket. I don’t eat that much meat personally.

Jeremy Claasen Blenheim The supermarket. It’s so much easier. It’s like fishing - why would you go when you can go to the supermarket?

Peter Chapman Blenheim A bit of both. If I’m serious about the variety of meats I’ll go to the butcher, but if I want mince for that night I’ll go to the supermarket.

Fowl love match By Adam Poulopoulos They locked eyes from across the plain, and it was love at first sight. In one of the stranger liaisons, a male pheasant, Pecka, and a female bantam, Ruby, have produced chicks on a Waihopai Valley farm. The unlikely duo produced half a dozen eggs and two chicks at the end of last year, and the bantam is currently nesting a clutch of about a dozen more, with two having already hatched. Farm owner Katrina Ferris says she thought the eggs had been fertilised by a bantam rooster on the farm which had since passed away. “A couple of months after the rooster died they hatched and we thought ‘how could they stay fertile for that length of time?” She says the chicks display many pheasant traits, including speckled chests, lacy feathers and a more upright posture than a bantam. The pheasant/bantam mix is rare, and often the chicks produced die shortly after birth. On the Ferris farm the chicks are eating, drinking water and have shown no observable health defects. Katrina says she is amazed they have not only produced healthy offspring,

Saxon Ferris with Pecka the pheasant and the two chicks.

but become a family. “They might mate, but for them to produce and then become a family unit is quite extraordinary. “The pheasant has become so protective of the chicks – he’s with them all day.” The unit has been dubbed the ‘Phan-

tom Family,’ a cross between pheasant and bantam. Ruby was given to Katrina’s son, Saxon, as a present by family friend Samantha Lawrence, while Pecka was bred by neighbour Norm Phillips and allowed to roam free.

By Jacob Page The Burleigh Park playground is likely to be without its swings and slide at least until the end of the month. The swings and large yellow slide were taken in a daring act in the middle of December and while there were hopes of finding the slide, it still remains elusive. Marlborough District Council reserves and amenities officer Robert Hutchinson says they will give it to the end of January to see if items can be relocated before replacements are sourced. “We have had a couple of

pieces of information come through from the public including a yellow slide for sale on a Trade Me-like website but they have come to nothing at this stage.” Burleigh Park is one of the most used playgrounds in the province despite it being built in the 1980s. Hutchinson says while the swings will be an easy piece of the playground to replace the slide would be trickier. He says a mould may have to be sourced for it. Hutchinson had stated previously it could cost $4000 to replace.

The final chapter Like many similar businesses nationally and around the world, independent bookstore Blenheim Bookworld is shutting down. Owners Peter and Charlene Scott spoke to Adam Poulopoulos about the store’s run. Peter and Charlene Scott had always hoped to work for themselves, and in 2006 they got the chance with Blenheim Bookworld, on Market Street. For both it meant a move from Christchurch and a change of career – Peter was a teller at Kiwibank and Charlene was studying, following a stint working for the Christchurch District Council. It helped both had a passion for books, as the 16 cases they brought with them during the move is a testament to. Their interest also gave them an idea what they wanted the bookstore to be like, and Charlene says the dark wood shelving, armchairs, nooks, crannies and natural light were all part of the ‘gentleman’s library’ aesthetic they wanted. “We set about creating a bookstore we’d want to go into. “Books are a mood thing, and people want to be able to take time with them. “In a library you can spend time among the aisles and the stacks, and that’s the look we were going for.” However, signs the store was not coping with the rise of online shopping started to emerge. Two years ago, the store received 200 special Christmas orders, but last Christmas, that number dwindled to below 20. When the store opened, more than three of its bays were dedicated to adult fiction. Now, there is only one. “Since opening we’ve diversified the stock, held events and refitted the store, but we couldn’t adapt to online shopping,” Peter says. Charlene says the store has always had a website, but competing financially with online retailers was impossible.

“New Zealand online shopping law allows people to get books cheaper than we get them from the wholesaler, and being independent we don’t buy as much from the supplier, which means we don’t get as much of a discount as the chains do. “Spending two or three dollars online on an author you don’t know is not a big deal, and we just can’t compete with the margins.” Over the years the store has hosted a kaleidoscope of different events, based around subjects like hunting and fishing, poetry, tattooing and alternative faith. “Most events are based around an author, but because Blenheim is small and expensive to fly to you don’t get many visits,” Charlene says. She says the range of functions has given her an appreciation for the region’s arty types. “The musicians, actors, artists and writers – Marlborough’s cultural wealth is seriously underrated. “You only need to fall out the front door one morning and you’re probably living next to one. “One thing that struck us was we saw more stage shows in our first six months here than our last six years in Christchurch.” Peter and Charlene will take some time to ponder their next move, but are likely to stay in Marlborough. As for taking on another bookstore, they’re not ruling it out just yet. Peter and Charlene have already been contacted by other bookstores looking to take their books. The store will continue to liquidate stock, with February 28 the final Book lovers Peter and Charlene Scott are closing their business after almost eight years. deadline for closure.

Starting university can be an exciting time. It is often accompanied by many lifestyle changes such as new routines, meeting new people, making new friends, and generally adjusting to campus life. In the midst of all of this, students are expected to develop effective study skills in an environment that may be very different to the one they were used to in school. Here are some tips to help you manage your time and your work load, cope with the stress

of study and hopefully have you well on the way to academic success in your chosen field. Establish a timetable: Schedule fixed commitments (e.g. lectures, tutorials, sports training). Also schedule in due dates for assignments, projects and presentations etc. Plan your day: Begin each day with a list of things you both ‘have to’ and ‘want to’ accomplish. It is better to have more items on your list than less.

Brain food Salmon, sardines and mackerel are amongst the healthiest types of fish. Why?

Organise your place of work: Ensure that your study area is a pleasant environment. Organise your books, papers etc. so that they are easily accessed. Searching for things is a big time waster. Have a tidy desk. Know your peak times: Decide when you have the most energy as this corresponds with when you are most able to focus and concentrate. Schedule your most demanding work for these times and less demanding work for other times when energy is

not as high. Study breaks: Study for about an hour at a time then have a short break. This is an efficient study method because while you are taking a break the brain is still processing the information. Take care of yourself: Make sure you are attending to the three basics for health and wellbeing, which are sleep, nutrition, and physical activity. Keep the big picture in mind value yourself and what you’re wanting to achieve in your life.

Helping with course choice As your child moves on into secondary school it becomes more important to choose the subjects and courses that will lead them to the sort of work they want to do. Parents have an important role here. Careers NZ (www.careers.govt.nz) has excellent advice for students and their parents. Tools to develop ‘career maps’ and help young people plan what to study to get the NCEA qualifications they need to meet their goals are available on the government’s youth guarantee website.

Bamboo Garden Restaurant owner Bu-nga Krataitong holding one of the new customer loyalty cards.

Bamboo Garden Restaurant The year 2014 was a happy and successful one for Bamboo Garden Restaurant owners Bu-nga Krataitong and Nuttavut Rodsienglum. So as they launch into the New Year, Bu-nga wishes to thank all their loyal customers who have supported the restaurant. “Since taking over the business two years ago we have had such great support, so I want to thank everyone who has dined with us,” she says. The feedback from customers on their dining experience with Bamboo Garden Restaurant has been “so nice”, Bu-nga says, showing that the restaurant has a loyal following. “We are so happy when customers say our restaurant is a ‘destination’ for them to visit. “One lady said when she travels from Christchurch to Wellington, she likes to stop in Blenheim for dinner at Bamboo Garden. It was so nice to hear,” Bu-nga smiles. Celebrating the New Year Bamboo Garden Restaurant is introducing its brand new loyalty card for its custom-

ers next month. How it works: When you spend $25 or more simply present the card and points will be added to it. The card can be used when dining in or for takeaway, and one point will be earned for every $25 spent and can be spent the next time you visit Bamboo Garden Restaurant. “This is another way for us to thank our customers for their support,” Bu-nga says.

Pike River Mine families to have weekend of local hospitality It has been just over four years since the Pike River Mine Disaster which claimed the lives of 29 men. But the memory of it remains with people all over New Zealand. Wayne Carey, formerly of Reefton, and now residing in Blenheim, knew three of the men and he felt strongly that he would like to do something for all the families of the 29 men. As a way of moving forward for them, he thought a weekend of Marlborough hospitality where they could just relax and enjoy themselves would be something he and this province could offer. Wayne has organised travel accom-

modation, meals and activities for their weekend, but he now needs to raise the money. Local woman Erica Sprosen has now joined forces with Wayne to help with the fundraising. On Monday, February 16 there will be a fundraising dinner and auction held at Bamboo Garden Restaurant where they hope to raise the bulk of the money. Erica and Wayne are hoping the community will get behind them by way of sponsorship, purchasing a ticket to the dinner and donating auction items. Erica, who has organised a number of fundraisers, says she is confident

the people of Marlborough “will not let us down”. “We have an extremely generous and supportive community here,” she says. Tickets for the dinner/auction will be $35 per person and can be purchased by contacting Wayne on 577 5444 or 027 3035417. Anyone wishing to donate items can contact Wayne or Erica on 578 0273 or 021 048 5327. Right: Wayne Carey is hosting a fundraising dinner at Bamboo Garden Restaurant.

Cricket tournament under way By Adam Poulopoulos Teams from around the island have descended on Blenheim for the South Island Primary Schools’ Cricket Tournament this week. The tournament began on Monday and finishes on Friday, with each team playing a game each day. About 200 players and staff, along with the families of the players, have arrived in Blenheim for the event. Marlborough began the tournament with a loss on the first innings to Mid Canterbury at Horton Park. Ma rlborough bat ted first, scoring 135/8 from 60 overs. Joel Lavender

scored 55 and captain Tom Sutherland 35, together putting on 84 for the second wicket. After Tom was run out the innings stalled, with wickets falling regularly and runs hard to come by throughout. In reply Mid Canterbury were 51/4 at one stage, but ran down the total in 43.2 overs with four wickets in hand. Coach Mark Mason called the performance “an aberration” and his players responded yesterday against Nelson at Oliver Park. Marlborough bowled them out for 67 in their first innings, before declaring their innings at 130/4. Nelson was 9/1 shortly after

National stockcar championships Eight Blenheim drivers attend meet Mark Taylor and Gavin Marshall were the best of the local drivers at the New Zealand Stockcar Championships in Nelson over the weekend. Taylor, who lives in Lawrence but is registered to Eastern States Speedway, placed 26th in the final, and was the seventh South Island car home. Marshall placed 13th in tier two, and 43rd overall. He was racing a new car he had built from scratch himself.

Two drivers new to stockcars also attended. Grant Tompson and Aaron Schumacher placed 10th and 12th in tier 3 respectively, while Luke Thompson, returning to stockcars after a few years away, finished 16th in tier 3. About 130 cars from around the country raced at the meet, won by Asher Rees from Palmerston North. Marshall and Taylor are also attending the Blakely Construction Stockcar Hoopla meet in Christch-

Surf boat crew to face Australia By Adam Poulopoulos The hard work has paid off for the Rarangi surf boat crew, who have been selected to take on their trans-Tasman rivals next month. The four-person boat, swept by Neil Watts, will be the New Zealand under-23 men’s development team facing Australia at the Trans-Tasman Test Series at Waihi on February 7. The crew sealed qualification by winning their division at round two of the New Zealand Surf Boat Series, at Whangamata, on January 2. Crew member Joe Lepper says their achievement had not sunk in yet. “It’s a bit surreal. You’ve got to pinch yourself to realise you’re representing your country.” The achievement is a big step for a crew that has gone from rowing casually to competitively in the last few years. The crew now trains six times a week, in preparation for six or seven meets a year.

Sport inbrief TOUCH The Marlborough touch competition resumes this week after the Christmas break. Mixed-grade games are tonight, while men’s and women’s-grade games are tomorrow night. The competitions continue until the end of next month.

SOFTBALL

The Rarangi team: Mick Boon, sweep Neil Watts, Joe Lepper, Keagen Saul and Matt Jackson.

Watts says the selection is good reward for their efforts. “Nothing in life comes easy for these guys – it shows what you can do with a bit of hard work.” He says the crew has continued to progress. “Last year we won nationals and that was the pinnacle, but this has

gone past the pinnacle. “We’ve come up against the Red Beach crew who are world champions and beaten them eight or nine times. “Clubs like Red Beach and Orewa have expensive boats but we’ve got a boat that’s 12 years old, held together with duct tape,

a bit of spit and a bit of luck. “It shows the little man can do it.” The team will race against the open men’s crews sent by either country in the three-race series. Points will be added up across all crews to find the winning country.

Four fleet-footed Fissendens One local family featured heavily at the North Island Colgate Games in Wellington last weekend. Four members of the Fissenden family were included in the Marlborough dozen who competed at the games, with Grace, 13, leading the way.
