Tourists must make an effort to know rules

Les Whiteside

Continued from page 1 Gatchell says he was side-swiped by a Subaru Legacy car driven by a German tourist and his two German companions on Redwood St on January 10 while he and his threeyear-old son were on their way home from doing some shopping. “They didn’t speak English, they didn’t have a licence or any insurance, not even third party. “I got the police involved and I still have to pay my (insurance) excess and they get away scot-free.” Gatchell’s 2000 Holden Clubsport that he says he has had for a month now had an estimated $5000 worth of damage which was a third of what he paid for the car. “When tourists come to the country they should be given some guidance on learning how to drive on (New Zealand) roads as opposed to just the usual ‘keep to the left and you’ll be fine’.

Richard Gatchell shows off the damage to his Holden Club Sport after a car with three tourists pulled out and hit him. Richard is wanting tourists to be given a clearer guideline of New Zealand road rules and driving etiquette before being given a set of keys.

“I don’t know if (rental car companies) even care as long as their cars are being used.” Blenheim Police highway patrol team leader, Barrie Greenall says some tourists who stayed for extended periods choose to buy a car on the cheap for their journey and then ditch the car before returning home. He says often they do not consider insurance and run the risk. He said third party insurance was a cheap way for tourists to cover themselves in this case – most rental car companies had their own insurance on cars. Greenall says the emphasis was on tourists to be knowledgeable about the road rules in New Zealand just like it is the responsibility of Kiwis when they travel around the world. Gatchell says he now has a fortnight in a loan car for his trips to and from Havelock and a young son still trying to process the incident.

Scott honours fallen family members By Jacob Page For Scott Adams, being the first person to read Marlborough’s role of honour at the 100 Days for 100 Years Anzac commemorations was something he felt compelled to do. Adams read the first six names of the 634 Marlburian service people who have been killed in wars and conflicts since 1899. Adams had two family members who were honoured on the first night, P.R Adams and H.M Adams, who were both killed during World War Two. “I got a phone call out of the blue to do this and I thought it why not it is very

important,” Adams says. He says he was aware of his family’s history in WWII. “I’m a military enthusiast so I was well aware of the importance.” He said it was a moving experience. Denis Teeling, who has been the face of the campaign so far, rediscovered his talent for his childhood instrument - the cornet, with moving renditions of The Last Post and The Rouse. Scott Adams pins the first six poppies on the plinth at the Seymour Square Cenotaph after being the first person to read out the roll of honour at the 100 days for 100 years Anzac ceremony.

Fire rages on in “dry” Dashwood Pass

Wednesday January 21, 2015

By Jacob Page A swift response by firefighters and other emergency services has spared more grassland from being scorched on Monday. However, with dry conditions still prevailing, the fire sparked up again yesterday and had burned its way through more than 50 hectares as The Sun went to print with more than 30 firefighters battling the blaze. The blaze, in the tinder-dry Dashwood Pass on the eastern side of State Highway One, near Seddon, swept across 30 to 40 hectares of grassland within several hours on Monday Quick thinking was able to prevent a large grassland fire between Blenheim and Seddon becoming a Rural fire worked closely with worst case scenario, on Monday. New signs highlight fire risk By Adam Poulopoulos New warning signs have been placed around the Wither Hills Farm Park as the risk of fire continues to rise. The signs, put out when the risk of fire rises to high or very high levels, have gone up a month before they were put out last year. Marlborough principal rural fire officer Richard McNamara says the signs encourage patrons to use the Farm Park early in the morning or later in the afternoon. He says going too far up the slope

is also a hazard. “For every 10 degrees of slope, the fire doubles in intensity and speed. Fire on a 20 degree slope will run four times as fast as one on the flat ground. “The higher you are up the slope the harder it is to avoid the fire as it travels upwards.” McNamara says the short-tomedium forecast shows no signs of substantial rain. “Now with everything in a drought phase south of the Wairau the light rain will only have a

transient effect. “At the moment we’re in a weak El Nino climate, so conditions on the eastern seaboard will stay like this until the early autumn. “The only change of heavy rain is a decayed tropical cyclone coming from the tropics, and we need in excess of 60 to 70 millimetres.” McNamara says the cost of lighting the weekend’s Seddon fire is over $100,000, and with the strict liability associated with rural fires will be paid for by the person(s) who lit it.

Emma Logan changes it up By Jacob Page Expect an edgier Emma Logan in 2015. The Blenheim singer/songwriter has given herself the moniker ‘October’ and has found early success making the top 10 in Phoenix Fest Band Search Competition. Her song ‘Rinsed’ has her in the hunt to open the Phoenix Festival, in Auckland on March 21, after a public vote saw her be one of 10 tunes to make the next round, beating out more than 600 other applicants. “I thought Emma Logan was just far too boring – it needed to be something short, succinct, punchy and easy to remember.” “So, October it is – which is my birth month.” The 18-year-old says she wrote Rinsed at the beginning of last year as she entered a busy final year at Marlborough Girls’ College. “The whole song encompasses my feeling of being overwhelmed with the workload, feeling jaded and faded and a bit exhausted really.

“I wanted it to be something you could dance to and for it to be a bit more edgy as opposed to sad, soppy and depressed.” Emma says transitioning from theatre performances, where she made her debut in The Sound of Music at age 12, to finding her own stand alone voice was challenging but exciting. “I don’t listen to any of the top 40 on the music charts – they all sound the same to me because they all use the same chord structure. “I want to write something that keeps my attention and something that surprises me and catches me off guard. “I also like lyrics that you can’t always understand (the meaning of them) at the first listen.” Emma will study music and marketing at Victoria University this year and will relish the chance to perform outside of Marlborough regularly. Locals abuzz over low mosquito numbers By Celeste Lodewyk Mosquitoes - those annoying buzzing insects that harass you day and night. But where are they right now? This is the question posed by a number of Sun readers over the past two weeks. Emails and phone calls from Marlborough residents have highlighted an apparent low in mosquito populations. Some of the comments came from people camping or visiting beaches, such as Whites Bay while others came from people delighting in their ability to sit in their gardens in the evening without being bitten. The Sun first contacted Roger Abernethy of Fly Busters who says he hadn’t had a callout for mosquitoes this season. Instead, he was dealing with a large number of ants, cockroaches and flies. The Sun then spoke with Mosquito Consulting Services

national manager Mark Disbury to ask if there had been a decline over the summer period, and what was the contributing factor. “Recent low rainfall means there is less breeding habitat, and low humidity brings about a lower survivorship/lifespan of adult mosquitoes. “Many of the breeding habitats have dried up, and in garden areas where they would normally thrive, it hasn’t rained a lot and

many people aren’t watering too often. “Mosquito females lay their eggs on or near water bodies, and after hatching, if there is not constant water they will desiccate and die.” He also says around the March and April period Marlburians may see a spike in mosquito populations, particularly when it rains.

By Jacob Page Timaru’s Mitch Low started his country music love affair with the drums and guitar but it was his voice that stole the show at the Gourmet Paradise Country Music Awards, in Blenheim on Sunday night. The 21-year-old stuck to a song he knew, ‘Smokey Mountain Rain’ by Ronnie Milsap to take out the top prize at the Marlborough Civic Centre. “I’ve performed that song a few times and it’s a really good one and easy for the band to play.” Mitch has come a long way from the 13-year-old who played the drums in his first country music band ‘Running Bare’. “I started playing drums and a bit of guitar and slowly progressed to doing back-up vocals and then doing the odd song.” Mitch says his theory is to play a song he knew well at major events. “I think even one of the judges said last night that it was better to do a song you’ve done before (on the circuit,) it just makes things easier.” Mitch has three older sisters who also

competed at previous events and says it was a real thrill to win the top prize. “The competition was excellent and I know the judges had a hard task narrowing it down.” Blenheim also had its share of winners with Danielle Coles winning the Under-18 novice section and Richard McCallum and Angie Cook combining to take out the senior duo section. Cook also won best original song. More than 60 entries were received for the event. Marie Parnwell, organiser of the Christmas lights displayed in a room beside the Railway Station Cafe, last month, is thanking the community after she raised over $5000 for Hospice Marlborough. “To all the preschools, schools, rest homes, Alzheimers Society and other groups who accepted our invitation to view the Christmas Grotto, you gave us great pleasure. “Young and old alike, your presence was magical, so thank you,” she says. Marie has put up a lights display for the past three years, but says this year was one of the best. “I apologise to all caregivers for causing riots at the breakfast and dinner table when one child had attended the grotto and their siblings had not,” she laughs. “To the young lad who informed me

Discovering jewellery with Pamela McCormick

The Spirit of Christmas just past I read these stories in the industry magazine of the IJO (International Jewellers Organisation), of which we are a member. Having been part of a fund-raising charity Christmas Concert here in Blenheim when all our expenses were sponsored by local businesses and Rotary Clubs, allowing all our proceeds to be donated to the Salvation Army Families helping Families Appeal, it touched a chord, especially in the jewellery context. In the US the Salvation Army conducts a ‘Red Kettle’ campaign annually, but in 2014 more than loose change and notes got tucked into the cans. Across the country, diamond rings were left among the offerings. In Carmel, California, home of Doris Day an unidentified man left a diamond ring with a note, “This is my late wife Edith’s engagement ring. I have kept it for the past 11 years but it is not benefiting anyone or her memory. In the name of Edith Louise Read - Merry Christmas!” The ring was appraised at $3,500. A ring valued at $1,400 was dropped in a collection kettle in Missouri. The ring was wrapped in a letter with “for the feast of Stephen” written on the back,” reported the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The most remarkable story comes from the Boston area. In early December, a widow in Massachusetts left a diamond ring and wedding band in a kettle with a note that she hoped the ring would be sold to buy toys for needy children. The ring was valued at $1,850. The donation made the news and another widow offered to donate $21,000 to the Salvation Army in exchange for the rings to be returned to their owner. The Salvation Army accepted the donation, and the two women met privately reported Boston.com. Should you have jewellery you no longer wear but don’t wish to pass on, remodel or sell, you might like to consider donating it to a worthwhile charity. Kind wishes for 2015!

75 Market St, Blenheim, Ph/Fax: 03 578 7897

that he was ‘desperate, just desperate’ to get to the display, your sparkling eyes said it all. Thank you children.” Marie went on to thank everyone who offered their services and decorations, and to those who took part

in Santa’s visit on the train with his elves and fairies. “The outstanding result of $5236 was raised for Hospice. This result has been achieved by all of us,” she says.

Letters to the editor

Where are the moths? Dear Ed, Summer is really here. Saturday wasn’t quite so hot, but I was pleased after tea time to open my ranch slider. I kept it open till 10pm as I expected a large convoy of small and large moths. But no not a single moth, this is really bad as our butterflies have vanished, not even the white butterfly are about now. Does anyone know how or what has caused their disappearance? Is it poison or paper wasps. KMW

Letters on issues of community interest are welcomed. Guidelines are that they should be no longer than 150 words. They must be signed and a street address provided to show good faith, even when a nom de plume is provided for publication. Please note that your name and street address MUST be provided with emails.

Gardeners feeling the heat Dear Ed, I agree that water usage should be restricted where the supply is getting very low, at this time of the year. But what concerns me is I grow a vegetable garden that costs a fair bit in plants, manure, pest control let alone other costs involved also work too keep it growing. But when you have to water the veges to keep them alive you can get stung. Yet those with huge swimming pools are using thousands of litres of water, spa pools also go through their fair share of water, then those water slides should need to be registered with the council, where a water meter should be installed. We don’t have a bath, so why should the gardener be penalised for growing healthy food and pool owners can empty and refill their pools when they want? D Simmonds

Eye catching or eyesore? Dear Ed, Christchurch is mostly flat. So too is Blenheim. Christchurch has a river meandering through it. So too does Blenheim. What’s the point here and what’s the difference? The point is Christchurch makes the most of theirs keeping it pristine for locals and visitors alike and has lovely walks and even punting and paddling activities. We have weeds, overgrown edges and little, if any, activity on or in the river. The difference? Ours is on SH1 and is seen by thousands who (unfortunately) pass over the river and don’t stop. Why? Perhaps because it has no appeal, no “wow” factor, no activity to lure them to stop and paddle or play. Perhaps it’s just because it’s too damn difficult to find out how to get into town to locate it. I don’t have the answer. What I do have is photographs showing how unsightly it is and how overgrown and weed infested it has become. What a crying shame and indictment on us all. So much of a wonderful resource wasted for weeds! Pride & Priorities?

Lipstick and Hi-Vis Aurora Blackmore-Adair she’s beautiful, models parttime and drives a truck for a haulage company in Western Australia. This Marlborough girl is living the dream of many Kiwis who have journeyed to Australia in search of better jobs and salaries. Aurora talks to reporter Celeste Lodewyk about her love for driving big machines and her plans to return home this year.

Aurora was just 17-years old when she began driving dump trucks in Richmond. Her employer later informed her that she was the best worker he’d had after a string of bad employees who were rough on the machinery.

“I’ve found lots of places prefer to hire females as heavy machinery operators because they’re more careful on the gear, so it’s a great industry to get into if you have the guts for it.” After a conversation with her brother about the “money to be made” in Perth, Aurora bought a one way ticket in December 2012. The heat and the culture came as a shock to her initially. “It was high 30s to 40s every day and high 20s all night long. “I felt like a little girl in a huge place, it definitely changed me.” After putting her resume on Gumtree, a classified advertising website, she

was contacted by company McMahon Haulage, wanting to interview her that day. She got the job straight away and has since been working fulltime, picking up and delivering mining equipment and supplies for a gold mine 1800km north of Perth. Being the only female truck driver for the company, she has had to work hard to earn the respect of the other drivers, as well as learning to drive in the harsh Australian conditions. “It’s been tough being the only female driver, the amount of flak I cop is unbelievable. “But I have learnt to give it back. Aussie male truckies don’t hold back, they’re ruthless,” she laughs. “I have learnt so much about trucking, it’s been tiring and draining but in some ways I’m glad to be only working Monday to Friday.” While she might be enjoying her evenings at home, that will soon change when she starts doing long trips. “I am a bit worried about driving through the harshness of the Western Australian outback. If something goes mechanically wrong, or tyres blow up it’s up to me to be able to know what to do and to get the load delivered on time,” she says. One of her worst experiences came

in the form of a tiny, buzzing insect. She contracted the Ross River Virus nine months ago from a mosquito bite which attacked her joints, caused itching, swelling and tiredness. The effects, she says, last up to five years and have been one of the hardest mental and physical things to deal with. In her spare time, Aurora gives horsemanship lessons and helps people with badly behaved horses, something that keeps her busy while she misses her own horses back in Marlborough. “I miss my own horses so much so I need to be around them when I can over here. With what ever time she has left she fits in photoshoots with local and traveling photographers. As much as she enjoys her life in Australia, Aurora says she plans to return to Marlborough in April for a 12 month stint, getting back to her roots and spending time with her family and horses, before heading back to Western Australia. “I’ll sit my road train license then do a year or so doing long trips. Then I think that will be enough of Australia for me, and I look forward to eventually moving home and getting a wee farm of my own to focus on my horses,” she says.

YOUR RETIREMENT

The trouble with retirement is that you never get a day off. ~Abe Lemons

Retired but not out Now that you’re retired, do you miss working? And how do you fill your time? Not so long ago retirement was viewed by many people as the beginning of the end. Upon reaching age 65, your days of being an active contributor to society were pretty much over. What lay ahead was a peaceful existence, free from stress and anxiety, that was filled with time to relax and enjoy memories of earlier glories. For those fortunate enough to live the retired life today, the picture is very different. Today’s retirees are not satisfied with passively watching life from the sidelines.

They finally have the time to do as they please and have plenty still wanting to accomplish. Although they may not be quite as energetic as age 20, they are far from out of the game. Here are some ways baby boomers are choosing to spend their retirement years. • Renew family ties: Many had to sacrifice family time in order to fulfill the requirements of their careers. In retirement they can be front and centre for important moments. • Pursue work you enjoy: Some people prefer to keep working in some capacity in retirement. For them the job offers excitement and challenges they want to sustain

in later life. Many people also wish to continue experiencing the camaraderie found interacting with co-workers. In retirement you have a greater degree of freedom to chart the course you prefer. • Get better at something you love: Your retirement can be a time to refocus on what you love. • Take time for you: Retirement is the perfect opportunity to set aside time for personal reflection. That elusive downtime you used to dream of is now within your grasp. In retirement, the day’s activities are in your control, and it is up to you to take time for yourself.

Congratulations, you’re ready to retire. You’ve done the hard part - spent a lifetime getting out of bed for work, taking care of your family and saving for this day. But what if retirement turns out to be too easy and there’s not enough to do? Take up a sport Golfers don’t have to worry about what to do with their time—they’re too busy playing, practicing, and reliving their rounds afterward. Many folks who have come to sports late in life get great pleasure (and other benefits, like fitness) from their new activities, whether it is fishing, boating, tennis, biking, or water aerobics. Start a business In this sphere you are only limited by your imagination, interests and finances. People need someone to take care of their pets, watch their empty houses, drive them to the airport,

fix their computers and bicycles. Tourist destinations need tour guides. Perhaps you have always had an idea for a product or service, now is the time to test it out. Do something you like, beware investing too much of your capital, and try to get good advice from someone whose business judgment you trust. Take a bridge (gap) year It used to be this was the plan for young people who needed an adjustment between high school and college, or college and their first job. But more and more folks are planning for a bridge year right after their retirement starts. Perhaps you have always wanted to travel around the world, work for a relief organization, learn Italian in Rome, build a website, or learn how to repair clocks. This is your chance.

YOUR RETIREMENT Food for life As people age, their diets may need to change, especially if their diets are not wellbalanced. Generally, doctors will recommend a well-balanced diet for elderly, meaning that they should eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, protein and whole grains to maintain and improve overall health. Omega-3 fatty acids The acids have been proven to reduce inflammation, which can cause heart disease, cancer and arthritis. They can be found in many different types of fish and in flaxseed oil.

Calcium and Vitamin D The need for calcium and vitamin D increases as people age. This is primarily to preserve bone health. One added benefit of calcium is that it helps to lower blood pressure. Limit sodium content For those who suffer from hypertension – high blood pressure, prepare foods with low sodium. The foods with the lowest sodium content are fruits and vegetables, so incorporate them as much as possible in meals.

A guide to jumpstarting a retirement plan in your 20s Starting a life can get in the way of planning one. The need to find a job and a place to live, not to mention food or premium paid television seem to take priority in your 20s. But this comes at the expense of a sensible strategy for future well-

being. Too few 20-somethings pay any mind to a retirement plan. Below are two of the most important steps for the eager 20-something to complete. • Save a little, save often Habits are hard to break. Make saving a lit-

tle from each pay cheque one. Someone who saves a bit for a long time is better off than a person who starts later and must save more. • Scrap the credit cards, pay off that debt first. Credit cards are too often used as get-out-ofjail-free cards.

Does drinking alcohol put you and your body at risk?

How alcohol affects the body Drinking alcohol affects the body in many ways. These effects can lead to physical and mental changes that can put alcohol users and others at risk of injury or death. How a lcohol move s through the body When a person drinks beer, wine, or another alcoholic drink, the alcohol is quickly absorbed in the blood and then carried throughout the body. A drink of alcohol stays in the body for about two hours after being consumed. This period of time can vary depending on the person’s weight, gender, and other factors. When a person drinks, the concentration of alcohol in the blood builds to a peak, then goes down. At first, alcohol often makes people feel relaxed and happy. Later, it can make them feel sleepy or confused.

The small intestine and the stomach absorb most of the alcohol after drinking. A small amount leaves the body through breath and urine. Eating food, especially fatty food, slows the absorption of alcohol. If people drink more alcohol than their bodies can absorb, they become drunk. How alcohol affects the liver, brain, and heart Drinking too much alcohol affects many parts of the body. It can be especially harmful to the liver, the organ that metabolizes (breaks down) alcohol and other harmful substances. People who drink heavily for a long time can develop diseases such as liver inflammation (alcoholic hepatitis) or severe liver scarring (cirrhosis). Alcohol-related liver disease can cause death. Alcohol not broken down by the liver goes to the rest of the body, including the brain.

Alcohol can affect parts of the brain that control movement, speech, judgment, and memory. These effects lead to the familiar signs of drunkenness: Difficulty walking, slurred speech, memory lapses, and impulsive behaviour. Long-term heavy drinking can shrink the frontal lobes of the brain, which impairs thinking skills. Drinking alcohol can affect the heart in good and bad ways. On one hand, studies have shown that moderate drinking, up to two drinks a day for men and one drink for women, can lower the chances of developing heart disease. On the other hand, heavy drinking, either all at once or over time, can damage the heart. Long-term alcohol use can also result in high blood pressure, which increases a person’s risk of heart disease.

Dr Boxclever (Jeff Sewell) persuades Ted Trusting (Gary Marshall) to have his second leg amputated.

Not who they seem

By Adam Poulopoulos The laughs were back at the Havelock Town Hall last Wednesday night as a near-sellout-crowd turned out for the first show of the Havelock Theatre Company’s new season. The play, ‘Cut and Run,’ is an English comedy set in a national health clinic which is hired out to a private consultant. From the synopsis on the programme to the set design, everything pointed to a story full of more twists and turns than a tangled stethoscope, and it didn’t disappoint. At the centre of things is the flamboyant Dr Boxclever, who has two eyes on the money. He is contrasted with Dr Glow, an honest man, but one who is not immune to temptation. Between them they treat a variety of different patients, including a fitness fanatic, a

perpetually-pregnant woman and an upperclass hypochondriac, some of whom are not who they appear to be. As always, the crowd got involved with the classic good-natured Havelock heckle, which got more pronounced as the play became more and more farcical. The performance was the first of a nine-show season. There are evening performances each night until Saturday night, starting this evening. Each evening performance starts at 8pm. Audience members are asked to bring their own refreshments. Soup and bread rolls will not be served at each performance as was reported last week. Tickets are available at Eyes on Nature in Havelock, Take Note in Picton and Still Books in Blenheim.

Sports day celebrates big milestone

A gathering that began during World War Two has just celebrated its 70th birthday. The Te Towaka Sports Day was held at the Leov’s property, near French Pass, on Saturday. The usual races were accompanied by a piper, speeches and cake-cutting ceremony to celebrate the 70th edition. Property owner Liz Leov says the tradition began during WWII, and had not changed much since.

“They’ve basically tried to keep it the same. It started as a home guard event in WWII, as there was some concern about the Japanese coming into the Sounds. “People decided the camaraderie had developed so they kept the day, and now they have a picnic and run races for the children.” Between 200 and 250 people turned up for the event, which saw many generations of the same families attend.

Sport inbrief Cricket Marlborough finished 11th in the South Island Primary Schools cricket tournament held locally last week. They had a first-innings win, a draw and three first-innings losses during the tournament. The tournament was won by Christchurch Red, who finished three points clear of Christchurch Black, South Canterbury and Canterbury Country. Next year’s event will be held in Dunedin.

Speedway

Children participate in this year’s Te Towaka Sports.

The countdown to the Picton ITM New Zealand Saloon Championships is almost over. Ten local drivers will be competing at the event, which starts with qualifying at Eastern States Speedway on Friday night. The event concludes with finals on Saturday night.

Cycling sisters taste success at carnival By Adam Poulopoulos For 11-year-old Katie Batt, performing strongly at the Canterbury Track Cycling Carnival earlier this month meant carrying on a family tradition. Katie rode off with the under-13 and development girls’ title from the carnival, held at Denton Park Velodrome in Christchurch earlier this month. It was the first carnival

for the youngest of three cycling siblings, who has been riding since the age of five. She won the under-13 women’s 1200 and 800 metre events, as well as racing against the under-15 riders and claiming third in the 800m handicap. She was joined at the meet by older sister Sophie, who was second in

the same handicap race. Last year, their brother Ethan won the under-17 boys’ title, while dad Nick also rides. Katie’s next meets are the Speights Ale House Blenheim Summer Track Carnival this weekend, and she, Sophie and Ethan hope to compete in the Yunca Junior Road Cycling Tour in Invercargill in October.

Golf The team of Tony Ermerins and Brent Lawless were victorious in the men’s division at the Rarangi Summer Spectacular golf tournament at the weekend. The pair combined for a score of 199, five shots better off than second-placed John Davis and Arnold Kremer. Sharvine Looker and Jo Rainbird won the women’s title by one shot from Anne Newman and Mariann Grant.
