Water abuse By Jacob Page Hosing restrictions have been imposed in Renwick and Picton as the pressure on water supplies continues to rise with the hot, dry weather across Marlborough. Water restrictions were imposed yesterday by the Marlborough District Council after weeks of warnings. Councillor and Renwick resident Cynthia Brooks expressed concern at the amount of water used in recent weeks and urged the community to get serious about water conservation. Residents need to accept brown, dry lawns Continued from page 1 Hosing gardens must be limited to alternate days only in both Renwick and Picton. Properties with even-numbered street addresses may use sprinklers only on even-numbered calendar days and those with odd-numbered street address are restricted to the odd-numbered days. Cynthia says people need to realise how serious the issue is. “Walking about I see people watering their lawns and hear sprinklers going at night. If you are going to use a sprinkler at least put a timer on it, or limit your usage to hand watering your flowers and vegetables. “The thing is, lawns might not look pretty being brown during summer but they will come back to life when the rain comes. Conserving the town’s water supply is more important,” she says. Cynthia and husband Graham, whose property is nearly an acre in size, have installed a rainwater storage system which consists of a number of interlinked barrels and large containers. In total they hold 5000 litres of rainwater which they use to water their large vegetable gardens over the dry periods. “It’s labour intensive but it’s how we manage our gardens without using the town’s supply,” she says. There is no restriction on hand-held hoses but

residents are asked to be sensible and keep this to a minimum. Only one tap should be used at a time to run a sprinkler or sprinkler systems. In Renwick the restrictions will be in place until further notice but in Picton it’s hoped that it will be a short-term restriction only.

Demand reached an all-time high on Monday evening which prompted the move. In Picton, a pipe failure at the Essons Valley water treatment plant has added to the problems. The town’s water is currently all being supplied by the Speeds Road plant and demand is running beyond its capacity. MDC operations and maintenance engineer Stephen Rooney is appealing to residents in both areas to ease off their water use. “Renwick residents were using 72 litres a second(on Monday night)– that’s actually 12 percent more water than the previous maximum use in the township set just a few weeks ago. People just don’t seem to have accepted the message that they needed to cut back,” he says. “Some of the town’s reservoirs are down to just 30 percent of normal capacity and we need people to cooperate. Work is underway on the problems at the Essons Valley plant and, so long as demand eases enough for the reservoirs to refill, the hosing ban in Picton may be in place for less than a week.” In the meantime, householders, particularly those at Waikawa, may be experiencing low water pressure, he said. Rooney says the situation is very much in residents’ own hands.

Thousands expected for iconic festival On Saturday, February 14, thousands are expected to attend what will be the 31st annual Marlborough Wine and Food Festival at Brancott Estate. Visitors to this year’s festival can look forward to a superior line up of entertainment, culinary experiences and wine sampled from more than 50 of the region’s producers. Smaller yield likely

inbrief

By Adam Poulopoulos After last year’s bumper crop, early predictions suggest this year’s harvest may not meet Marlborough’s long-term average. Last year’s crop forced several vineyards to drastically thin their crops to maintain grape quality, but Wine Marlborough general manager Marcus Pickens says vineyard managers will likely choose to go in a different direction this time. “Most growers will be pretty careful when thinning the crop this year. They don’t want to go under their contract yield. “It’s been a natural adjustment from last year – a fortunate adjustment in a lot of ways.” The grapes were about two weeks behind on their growth cycle during December, but the Christmas fine weather had seen them come up to their normal level. Pickens says ideally, vineyards have busy periods either side of the holiday break and a lull in between, but the weather had made that impossible in a lot of cases. Grapeworx Marlborough supervisor Moo Karuna is contracted to work on several different vineyards. He says for a period starting

Quench Restaurant and Wine Bar at the Chateau Marlborough was awarded a 2015 Beef and Lamb Excellence Award earlier this month. The restaurant won the award for dishes made with Wakanui beef and Canterbury lamb. It is the second successive year they have won the event. The Foredeck restaurant at the Bay of Many Coves also won the award.

about two weeks before Christmas and finishing about two weeks after New Year, his team worked up to 11 hours a day, six days a week, with a few days off. He says many wineries needed the vines trimmed and plucked quickly before spraying could begin. Saint Clair Family Estate vine-

yard manager Les Masters says Christmas is always a busy time. “The fellas who work here know they can’t pack up tools and have to work for two weeks. Most of us had Christmas day off and that was it. “We worked right through and had our Christmas break on the 15th or 16th of January.”

Masters says workers finished the wire lifting before Christmas and mostly sprayed and trimmed vines during the holiday period. He says they are busy again now, spraying canopies and putting up bird netting. Barring a spell of poor weather, harvest is due to begin in early March.

SH1 projects on the go By Jacob Page Marlborough is set to see significant road improvements as two major initiatives on State Highway 1 get underway. T he Gover nment-funded initiatives are set to see safety improved at both sites. Work began on Monday at the Sheffield Street intersection

of State Highway 1 near Riverlands, while the Aberharts Road intersection work will begin on February 16. While both pieces of work are set to improve the layout of both intersections, there will also be other benefits, according to the New Zealand Transport Agency. The Sheffield St safety im-

provements include widening the southbound shoulder of the highway, and installing a left turn slip lane into Sheffield St. Temporary speed restrictions will be in place during the works which are expected to be completed by the end of February. Widening the shoulders on both sides of the highway near

Aberharts Rd will be undertaken. Installing a right turn bay into Aberharts Rd and a flush median at the Rowley Crescent intersection will also take place. Temporary speed restrictions and lane closures will also be in place during the works which are expected to be completed before the Easter Holidays.

A masked man was escorted away while another was warned for jumping a fence during a protest at the Waihopai Spy Base on Saturday. No arrests were made as 50 protesters marched through the main streets of Blenheim and then onto the base itself. There were five police guarding the spy base.

Fishing offences The Ministry for Primary Industries has released figures showing a high number of recreational fishing offences recorded over the holiday period. Between December 20 2014 and January 11 2015, there were 82 offences recorded along the Kaikoura Coast, and 21 in the Marlborough Sounds. Kaikoura’s compliance was described as “one of the worst rates for several years”, while offences in the Marlborough Sounds were related to blue cod and set net breaches.

Raft race to change This Sunday’s More FM Raft Race has had to come on to land due to the low water levels in the Taylor River. The change opens the race to those who have not assembled a raft – organisers challenge Marlburians to come down to the Beaver Road Bridge with something resembling a raft. The rafts will then be separated into weight categories. Registration for the event is at 1pm. Those whose raft cannot adapt to land are still eligible for prizes if they bring it down on the day. North beats odds to become 2NZ By Adam Poulopoulos He took an unconventional route to grab his podium finish, but Patrick (Paddy) North does not care. The Blenheim-based speedway driver took second overall at the Picton ITM New Zealand Saloon Championships at Eastern States Speedway on the weekend. After driving for 20 years and “12 or 13” national title tilts, it was his first podium finish. North’s final position suggests a successful meet, but it did not always look like it would finish that way. He finished fifth-equal in Friday’s qualifying, with only the top six qualifying for finals the next day. The result meant he had to win a 17-car repechage on Saturday to make the finals cut-off. With a few tyre and suspension adjustments North won the repechage from his front-row starting berth, and then finished top on points in the three qualifying heats before the final. “Mostly it came down to not having any bad luck and driving with a cool head. Sometimes you can get on the outside, try and be a hero and attempt to pass five cars at once but I just stayed as low as possible,” he says. Starting on the front of the grid for the 20-car, 20-lap final, North led for about half the race before being passed by the eventual winner, Nigel Ross from Warkworth. “I was catching him a little at the end but he passed me fair and square. I was pretty rapt with second,” he says. “To do it in front of a big home crowd was

Paddy North with his trophy. Inset: Paddy North takes the chequered flag, putting an Eastern States saloon driver on the podium.

pretty awesome.” Robert Flood was the only other Marlborough driver to make the final, but a crash earlier on Saturday meant he started from well back on the grid. North reverts to super saloons for the upcoming South Island circuit, but will take his

saloon car, with the new ‘2NZ’ number on the side, to the South Island championships in Christchurch in March. More photos on page 18.

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk With less than a week to go, parents are flocking to local retailers in order to prepare their children for their first day back at school for 2015. The Warehouse Blenheim assistant store manager Warren Peter says sales of back to school supplies have begun to build up. "Like all big events, customers seem to leave their shopping to the last minute," he laughs. "But that's fine because they can get everything here, including school clothing and uniforms, shoes, stationery and lunch boxes," he says. Paper Plus manager Karen Gibb says she had seen some parents spreading out their school stationery purchases, as well as price comparing to help save money. "Stationery, uniforms, fees it's a lot for parents to pay for. "We sympathise, we are parents too so we try and help where we can," she says. Curtain change as theatre approaches milestone By Adam Poulopoulos It’s out with the old and in with the new at the Havelock Town Hall as the Havelock Theatre Company starts to prepare the building for its 110th birthday. The hall’s old green curtain, which has stood in the building since the early 1960s, was replaced by a new blue curtain in December, in time for the company’s recently-concluded production ‘Cut and Run.’ The company is also planning to restore the stage’s proscenium arch with a new coat of paint, gold detailing and theatrical masks. Jobs like changing the stage’s side walls to curtains, and upgrading the lighting and sound systems, are also on the agenda before the big birthday in 2017. Company chairperson Jennie Johnson says removing the old curtain was a difficult decision. “It was still functional even though it had holes in it, tears down the side and wasn’t fire retardant. “I’ve had complaints that people can’t look

through the new one and see who’s in the audience!” She says the company wanted to incorporate a new colour for “the wow factor,” but it had

taken a while to settle on the specific shade. Before the green curtain a roll-up canvas blind was used on the stage.

Pair lucky to survive capsize Marlborough’s top cop says two men were lucky to be rescued off the coast of Kaikoura on Monday night. They were seen by a person who was fishing on the shore to be having engine trouble in their small dinghy. The dinghy was drifting about 500 metres from the shore when police were notified about 7.10pm. By the time police arrived the boat had drifted out of view.

Simon Feltham The coastguard was called but could not locate the dinghy so a

helicopter and plane joined the search. By the time the pair were located their dinghy had capsized. One of the men was clinging to the hull and the other was found drifting nearby. Both men were wearing lifejackets. They were taken to hospital by ambulance showing signs of hypothermia. Marlborough area commander inspector, Simon Feltham, says

the men were very lucky the person fishing had seen them and raised the alarm when they did. “These men had no means of communication so it could have been quite a long time before anyone became concerned about them. The outcome could have been a tragic one.” He urged all people heading out on the water to ensure their vessel was seaworthy and to have some form of communication.

Punters jet in for fun day Over 400 people gathered at the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre for the museum’s Fun Day on Saturday. The event saw several planes, many privately owned, put on display.

Money raised from the event will go towards building a new hangar to house aircraft from World War Two, plus the café/foyer expansion. More photos on page 18.

Blenheim parched Blenheim is on course to record its driest January in a quarter of a century. So far 2.8 millimetres has been recorded at the Woodbourne station in 2015. The lowest-recorded January figure since

the Woodbourne station was founded in 1990 is 5mm. While it is one of the driest spots in the country, it is not the most dry: Wanganui has had 0.4mm of rain this month.

Yes. We have showers every second day now instead of every day. We try to conserve in the garden too.

Yes. We haven’t been watering our gardens recently.

I live on a boat so water’s not a problem for me.

No. I depend on my veggie garden to keep living costs down, so that’s where most of the water goes.

Yes we do. We have quick showers and we don’t use the hose very much.

Avoidable crash

Take up golf croquet Dear Ed, Ref your ‘Enjoy Your Retirement’ article, Wed 21 Jan, 2015, ‘Take up a Sport’. We have the answer - golf croquet. This is a growing sport worldwide and caters for ages 9 - 90+. It’s fast, similar to snooker but using larger balls, hoops instead of pockets, mallets in place of cues and on manicured outside greens. Brooklyn Croquet Club, Whitehead Park, 15 Brooklyn Drive, Redwoodtown, welcomes new members, plays Saturdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays with a sign in time of 12.45pm. Casual clothes, flat shoes and a wide smile is all that’s required. Hooked.

Bridget Orman Blenheim I do it all the time. I’ve been brought up in the country with tank water. In the garden we have timers on the taps and we don’t let the water get on the driveway or footpath.

Wine contests Dear Ed, With Air NZ changing to only one brand of wine on their aircraft, they will have to pull out of wine contests. The reason being they may find themselves judging some wines as gold medal and then serving inferior wines on the aircraft for mid flight drinks. Mark Reid.

Law hard to swallow Dear Ed, I fully endorse the comments of Mr Rod Lofthouse, Marlborough Express, Friday January 2nd, regarding the discharge without conviction of the woman doctor four times over the legal limit seemingly because her career and reputation would be seriously affected. He said, especially knowing one can be charged and convicted on, hearsay, no evidence available, no breath test, no being pulled over by the police, just a call from a member of public (who apparently even records speed on passing lanes) at the busiest time of the evening, no other complaints recorded. No consideration of career or reputation in this case - the law and court system is ‘Surely an Ass!’ Angry and Disgusted.

Dear Ed, I fully agree with Richard Gatchell. A swiss tourist crashed head on into a car at Goose Bay on Xmas day, yes the tourist came round the corner on wrong side of the road. My grandson, a passenger in the other car, now has plates in his forehead, lacerations and spleen damage, and can’t work for many months. This was no accident but an avoidable crash, tourists walk free to often, then get on a plane and go home. We as a family pick up the pieces.... C.A.N

Post frustration Dear Ed, One is beginning to wonder, what the hell’s wrong with our postal services. First, we get long cues at the main post office in town. Next we get people who have had late snail mail in the post which is not on. The next problem is no service. That’s right! Today I went to Redwoodtown to posts overseas mail, but there was no one serving. Why you ask? Simply because it was that persons smoko break, so for approx. 10 minutes, I was lined up with several others just waiting for that person to come off their smoko. Wouldn’t one think someone else would be made to step in? After - all, makes one wonder how one would get on if that person took crook? Obvious, the customer doesn’t always come first.” Tired of waiting.

Not just moths Dear Ed, KMW’s letter raised an observation that has a number of people who kick around outdoors are concerned about. He, or she, asks “where are the moths?”. I would ask where are the bees, crickets, skylarks, red ladybirds, cicadas, frogs, fantails, moreporks and various other wildlife species, in the numbers of yesteryears? And yes, moths and insects coming in the windows - virtually gone. Something is seriously adrift in the whole ecosystem. Where is DOC in this question? After all their title contains the word “conservation.” The observant ones I know who discuss this subject come up with the factor - chemicals. 1080 is used to kill “pests” but it was developed as an insecticide. It will take out bees, cicadas and other invertebrates - and “pests” and birds. Dew600 the replacement for DDT for grass grub, is widely used. At Cape Foulwind dead mallard ducks were autopsied and had Dew600 residues. I use the phrase a “cocktail of chemicals” to describe the most likely cause of the collapse of various species. Don’t forget also, humans are one cog in the ecosystem. Tony Orman

The gift of giving Mel Morris has been nationally recognised for the time she has spent volunteering for sport in Marlborough. She spoke with Adam Poulopoulos about helping to make our teams tick. Born-and-bred Marlburian Mel Morris does not like the limelight, so winning The Lotto Volunteer Foundation’s Sport Maker award last year came as a shock. So did seeing herself featured on Lotto’s next advertisement. “That’s 100 percent not me. I’d rather be behind the scenes getting the job done,” she says. The award recognised the hours Mel has spent doing administration and coaching for the teams her three primary school-aged boys play in. She says she received the award on behalf of others doing similar work. “As they (Lotto) said to me I received the award to recognise every other volunteer around the country. “It’s nice to be recognised, but that’s not why we do it.” She says while she grew up playing sport, having knowledge of the sports she’s involved in is not a volunteering pre-requisite. “I don’t know much about half the sports I’m involved in. The kids probably teach me more about them than anything else.” “You don’t have to understand the sport. A lot of people don’t put their hands up because they say ‘I don’t know how to do it,’ but you learn as you go along.” Mel thinks she got her passion for volunteering from her parents, who coached her netball and rugby teams while she grew up at Rapaura School. She started volunteering with son Max’s Rippa Rugby team eight years ago, and the next year she became the convenor of the Moutere rugby club Junior Advisory Board,

a position she still holds. In that time she has coached or managed teams across a diverse range of sports, including rugby, Flippa Ball, volleyball, softball and basketball. “If I’m in the carpark I’d prefer to be on the field helping than sitting around doing nothing,” she says. Managing a team can involve anything from organising meals to making sure all the playing kits are in the right sizes. She says she is happy to help in a field which is beneficial to children. “I have seen instances where kids haven’t been able to play sport because there hasn’t been anyone to take the team. “That saying ‘a kid in sport is one less in court’ is true. You get some kids on the field and let them shine and it helps build character.” Mel’s work with children is not limited to sport. For the last 18 months she has been a teacher and sporting director at St Mary’s School. Outside of work she says she enjoys whitebaiting. “We caught 25 pounds this season. I do enjoy it. It’s my time out. “That might be why I enjoy fishing too. I enjoy being around my kids but I also enjoy not being around them sometimes!” During the summer Mel is helping out with her children’s softball teams. Her first events in the winter season will be a rugby muster day and the South Island Primary Schools’ basketball tournament in Rangiora.

Lower fuel prices bring relief By Celeste Lodewyk Local motorists are all smiles at the pump as they take advantage of low fuel prices, after a series of price cuts since October last year. Earlier in the month nationwide petrol prices dropped another seven cents per litre, while the price of diesel sits at the lowest it has been for nearly two years. Caltex Main Street station owner Grant Stubbs says his customers are very pleased, and he has noticed a lot more activity at the pumps. “Our volume has definitely

been up. “There are still a lot of people on a budget but are now finding they are getting more for their money. “Others are tending to put in more fuel while it’s cheap, and for me when the tanker comes in with a delivery it’s costing me less so it’s a win win all round,” he says. Challenge Queen Street Service Station owner Phil Sweet says he had noticed a lot of surprised faces. “You see people come to put in $50 and their tanks have been full at around the $40 mark.

“I still have my regulars who come in for $20 worth of fuel, but they are noticing they are getting more for their money,” he says. Yesterday Caltex Main Street Station was sitting at 173.9 cents per litre of 91 octane and 106.9 cpl for diesel. Challenge Queen Street Service Station reported 173.9 cpl for 91 octane and 107.9 for diesel. Right: Challenge Queen Street Service Station owner Phil Sweet says his customers are happy with lower fuel prices. File photo.

Council urges no mowing in hot, dry conditions The Marlborough District Council’s reserves management has called a halt to mowing of reserves on the southern side of Blenheim at the foot of the Wither Hills as the fire risk is now so great. “It’s so dry that one spark flicked from a mower would be all that it would take to get a blaze going,” says council’s reserves and amenities officer Robert Hutchinson. “People moving around the lower Wither Hills walking tracks may notice that verges and reserves are not being mowed

near Sutherland Stream, Quail Stream and Harling Rise or around the Rifle Range Carpark but it is just too risky to have contractors’ machinery amongst this dry grass,” he says. If there was no rain soon, Mr Hutchinson says mowing will probably have to stop at other reserves around Blenheim, particularly those close to open spaces where fire could ignite. With pressure on local water supplies, council has also begun reducing its ir-

rigation regime in its reserves in Renwick and Picton. “Things may start to look a bit browner and a bit straggly in our parks and reserves but I hope people understand that we must manage our public amenities taking into account the weather conditions and the fire risk. At this time of the year we’re not necessarily going to be at our manicured best.”

Roach control

An increase in house fly numbers has been one of the most common reported pest issues over summer, says a local business owner.

House flies worse this year By Celeste Lodewyk The heat of summer seems to bring out the worst in the insect population, with pesky flies invading your home. As potential disease carriers, getting rid of the summer fly problem is essential. House flies and blow flies, the two most likely summer culprits, enter your home because they’re seeking a food source or they’ve already found one nearby. Magic Seal Marlborough owner/operator Roger Winter says house flies have been the most common complaint,

along with cockroaches and mosquitoes. He also says this summer has been worse for pesky critters than previous years. “Due to the heat and dry conditions, it’s definitely been worse this year. “It’s been creating quite a bit of work for me, which has been good but perhaps not so good for those dealing with the increase in insects,” he says. One area of work which has picked up has been Magic Seal’s insect screens. “A lot of people are going

off using the automatic insect control systems and are opting for insect screens. “Some have commented on the film they leave in the home, and others don’t like the ingredients used in the sprays. “At least with the screens there are no sprays and nasty poisons being used, and people can even have their windows open at night to let cool air in, while keeping the bugs out, particularly moths,” he says.

New Zealand has many species of solitary native wasps that evolved here and never cause problems for people. In contrast, four social wasp species have been accidentally introduced and become established pests. These introduced species are the Asian paper wasp, the Australian paper wasp, the German wasp and the common wasp. How should you behave around wasps? If a wasp annoys you, move quietly away. Wasps are attracted to food: Cover up any food that you’re not presently eating and keep lids on any sweet drinks. If you are eating and a wasp won’t go away, put your food down and walk away quietly. Wasps are unlikely to chase after you unless you have disturbed their nest. If you have disturbed a nest and are attacked, keep walking quickly away until they stop flying after you, usually after 50–100 metres

HARDAKER: Holly, Phil and proud big brother Ben are happy to announce the safe arrival of Chloe Ann (8lb 2oz) on January 22, 2015 at 9:56am at Wairau Hospital. Special thanks to midwife Sue Hudson, Dr Helen Crampton and the theatre and maternity staff. Both well.

HELLSTROM: Rob and Gemma are pleased to announce the birth of their first baby girl, Evelyn Miller(7lb 15oz) at 5:59pm on January 20, 2015 at Wairau Hospital. Special thanks to Gwen and the team at Ward One. Everyone is doing well.

BROUGHTON: Herbie, Leanne and big sister Bella are over the moon to announce the long awaited arrival of Corban Nate (8lb 7oz) born at 12:44am on January 25, 2015 at Wairau Hospital. A huge thanks to midwife Gwen Costello, all the staff at Ward One and for the support from Corban’s proud grandparents.

Baby sleeping habits The first few weeks of a baby’s life are a time of major adjustment. Although the books and experts give us some idea of how much sleep babies need, these are only guides and not a promise. They don’t help if you are already feeling a bit unsure about how much sleep your baby isn’t having. Comparing your baby to a non-existent ideal is unrealistic and is guaranteed to erode your confidence. What can I expect and what is normal? There is no absolute number of hours babies need to sleep according to their age.

In the first month of life most babies are reasonably settled. They wake for feeds and sleep in between. From around one month,

they tend to be more wakeful and most babies will have a couple of wakeful, crying episodes a day. Babies under the age of

around three months will still wake regularly overnight for feeds. This is because they need a regular intake of milk and can’t digest large volumes at any one time. Breast fed babies generally need to feed more often that bottle fed babies. Small babies don’t know the difference between night and day. It can take six or more months for their bodies to learn how to sleep longer overnight and be more awake through the day. If you have any concerns or wish to speak to a professional, contact your midwife or Plunket nurse.

RANDALL: Jason and Leonie are pleased to announce the arrival of their son Jett (8lb 6oz) on January 15, 2015 at 11:17am at Wairau Hospital. A little brother for Aylee. Backup lives up to name By Jacob Page Backup did exactly what his name suggested he would and backed up his win in the Marlborough Cup prelude on Friday with a win in the race proper on Sunday. The Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen-trained four-year-old proved too strong for the field at Waterlea Raceway, driven by Matt Anderson. Anderson said post-race, the horse was one that always shows a good kick at the top of the home straight. “He’s the type that never goes a bad run and he always puts his best footforward.” It capped a strong meeting with limited runners for the All Stars stable with Isaiah winning the $40,000 Pelorus Classic on Friday.

Harriers get new garage The Marlborough Harriers Club opened the club’s new garage on Thursday night. the garage, but share the area with Scouts and Girl Guides. Harriers will continue to use the Redwood Community Hall as their clubrooms. Life member Les McKay says the garage is a one stop shop, where the group can collect only the equipment they need on a particular day, rather than take everything.

GYMNASTICS The start of several Blenheim Gymnastics Club classes has been postponed due to seismic strengthening at the gym. Kindy gym, gym fun, grade one, grade two, iron and bronze and silver boys will commence at the start of term two. The open day will also be postponed, with a date to be announced. Competitive, silver, gold, and elite will commence at the start of term one as per usual.

MULTISPORT Entries are being taken for this year’s Coast to Coast event. The event, which involves running, cycling and kayaking, will take place on February 13 and 14. The course starts on the South Island’s west coast, at Kumara Beach, and finishes on the east coast, at New Brighton Beach. Four different divisions will be contested. For more information, visit the Coast to Coast website.

Former Marlborough Boys’ College head boy Ben O’Keeffe has been called up to the 2015 Super Rugby refereeing panel. It is O’Keeffe’s first year on the panel. He joins South African Jaco van Heerden as the two new members of the 16-strong team. O’Keeffe refereed in last year’s IRB Junior World Cup Final between England and South Africa at Eden Park. He played in the Marlborough Boys’ College backline growing up, and for the region’s under-18 side. O’Keeffe studied medicine at the University of Otago, and started refereeing while based there. He currently lives in Wellington, where he works as an eye doctor. His father Peter also refereed at a provincial level.

Callum Caughey was one of the standout performers at the Speights Ale House Blenheim Summer Track Carnival at Athletic Park over the weekend. Caughey finished the 500 metre time trial in 37.2 seconds, comfortably underneath the 37.5 second under-17 qualifying mark. The result means he will head to the Age Group Track National Championships in Cambridge in mid-March.

Coach Lance Spencer says he is likely to be even quicker there, with the event to be contested on a wooden velodrome rather than a concrete track. Overall, 45 from Nelson and Marlborough attended the meet, and Spencer says good performances across the board means the riders are in good form heading into the Tasman Centre Track Cycling Championships on Waitangi weekend.

SQUASH Megan Craig took out the women’s Australia Day Challenge title in Ipswich, Queensland over the weekend. Craig had to overcome 36 degree temperatures and 17-year-old finalist Lakeesha Rarere to take the title.

SWIMMING Sally McMath, 17, met two qualifying times for this year’s Australian Age Group Championships at the Wellington Long Course Summer Championships earlier this month. McMath qualified in the 200 metre backstroke and 100m butterfly, and will now wait to see if she is selected for the New Zealand team. McMath set seven new NelsonMarlborough records, including two open records, at the meet.
