It will begin operations in May. The new MRI suite will be tacked on to the carpark behind the hospital’s radiology building, and the carparks affected will be placed elsewhere in the complex. The project is a joint venture between the Pacific Radiology Group and the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. The service will see both

Scam warning Police are warning people against responding to a text message being sent out today from “Scott Skelby from Standard Chartered Bank, London” to contact him at a hotmail address for a “vital transaction”. Police have received information from several people who have received the same text message and believe it is a scam. Tasman District Intelligence Manager Inspector Iain McKenzie said people needed to be aware that foreign banks would not be contacting them by email. “The request to contact this person at a personal hotmail address should also be a clue. I doubt any bank employee anywhere would be authorised to do that for legitimate purposes.” Inspector McKenzie said that while the approach lacked credibility, there was always the risk someone may feel obliged to respond and could fall victim to a scam. Anyone who received the text message or similar message by any means should delete it and not respond, he said.

private and public patients treated in the same facility. NMDHB service manager, specialist services, Pat Davidsen, says the scanner will be of a research-quality standard. He says the project is providing a crucial resource. “For us it’s a very exciting time. It’s a different way to work forward in terms of providing an essential service for Marlborough, and one that has been missing for a while. “For us it’s a real red-letter day.”

The scanner is the first of its kind in Blenheim since a second-hand scanner used here was replaced by a scanner in Nelson several years ago. Davidsen says the new unit is likely to also take some patients from Nelson. The project was originally slated for completion in February, but the discovery of a few extra pipes onsite had pushed it back. The scanner will be housed by a portable structure that has been purpose-built in Australia.

Sam puts back fracture behind him By Adam Poulopoulos A l m o s t 16 m o n t h s a g o , Marlborough Boys’ College Year 10 pupil Sam Spencer had sustained a bad back injury. Now, he is a South Island Secondary Schools rowing gold medallist. Spencer won gold as part of the MBC under-15 coxed octuple sculls crew at the Meridian South Island Secondary Schools Championships in Twizel over the weekend. He was also part of the under-15 coxed eight, which finished second, and the under-15 quad, which claimed second in their heat, and the fourth-fastest time overall before the regatta was affected by inclement weather. It would have seemed a long way away when, in November 2013, he sustained a compressed fracture of his fourth thoracic vertebra and was knocked out after performing a jump on his mountain bike.

Sam Spencer with his medals.

“All I remember is just before the front wheel hit the ground and lying down with blood coming from my chin,” he says. In the short-term, he convalesced at home, missing his Year 9 MBC orientation. He was not allowed to train for

several months following the incident, which meant he missed his offseason training programme. He first started rowing at MBC in October. Now, he goes to the gym twice a week before school, rows six times a week and cycles to and from training. Sam’s mum Malinda Spencer says after starting physical training, she was unsure whether he would be able to row, but his situation had taught him self-discipline. “Because he’s looked after himself so well he hasn’t had any problems. “I don’t need to pick him up to go to the gym or training – he just does it. “His dad and I are really proud of him.” Sam’s next assignment is the Maadi Cup at Lake Karapiro from March 2329. Even before that, the MBC crews are seat-racing to make sure the best combinations are on the water.

Rain eases but drought not over While the weekend rain has brought an immediate respite to the gardens of Renwick, Picton and Havelock, the council is asking people to remain patient and continue to use water carefully as it is likely to be up to a week before there is any easing of the current restrictions on garden irrigation. Council operations and maintenance engineer Stephen Rooney says in Renwick the level of the aquifer levels feeding the township’s water supply rose by about 300mm after the wet weather. However he has urged the people of Renwick to conserve more water over the next 48 hours with a total water ban on gardens in place.

Marlborough District Council’s operations and maintenance engineer Stephen Rooney

The Wairau River peaked at 600 m3/s on Friday then rose again to 400 m3/s late on Saturday after that morning’s rainfall although

it had dropped back to a flow of 130 m3/s “River levels remain high there will be good recharge to the aquifer so hopefully it will continue to rise at the Renwick wells,” says Mr Rooney. However it was too soon to declare an easing of the restrictions on water use, he said. “Even though the rivers have had more water in them, the aquifer level at the Renwick wells is still very low. We’re having to manage the pumps very carefully – and that’s complicated even more by the dirty river water we’re dealing with.” Normally three pumps would be running at 20 litres a second but we’re down to two pumps at

15 litres a second at present, said Mr Rooney. However he says, if the aquifer did respond, it was possible Renwick people could be back to watering their garden on alternate days in about a week’s time. In Picton the rain had helped flush the Barnes Dam and, with the cooler temperatures, Council staff were hoping the algae bloom would clear. Water samples would be taken today but it would take a week to get results. In Havelock, the outlook is also promising. Mr Rooney says Havelock people have reduced their water use by a commendable level of more than 30 per cent.

Shellfish warning lifted The public has been given the all clear to collect shellfish in the Tory Channel (including Opua/Onapua Bays). Nelson Marlborough medical officer of health Dr Ed Kiddle says two consecutive shellfish tests taken from the Tory Channel area were clear, with no Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning toxin detected in the shellfish. Dr Kiddle reminded people to only take shellfish from clean water and never take shellfish after rain or when the water is dirty. He said certain areas such as estuaries near urban settlements were never suitable for taking shellfish for eating.

The Methodist Church being shifted from Grove Road to Sinclair Street. The photo was taken on October 23, 1872.

The current Wesley Centre.

Methodist movement celebrates 150 years By Adam Poulopoulos From Grove Road to Henry Street and all the places in between, it is coming up 150 years since the Methodist Movement began in Blenheim, and the Blenheim Methodist Parish are organising a bus trip to celebrate. The trip is on March 21, starting at the Wesley Centre at 3 Henry Street at 9:30am and returning at 4pm. The bus’s first stop will be at the movement’s original Blenheim base, on Grove Road, and will take in other historic sites, including at Baldick’s Bend on the Wairau Bar Road, at Tua Marina and at Havelock. Various other services will also be held

during the weekend of March 27 to 29 to celebrate. Blenheim’s first Methodist Church was at 67 Grove Road, where Super Cheap Auto currently stands, and was completed in 1865. The build was difficult, as the Wakamarina Gold Rush saw a lot of labourers move out of town. After the church moved temporarily to Sinclair Street a new building was opened on High Street in 1882, which served the community for 99 years. The Wesley Centre was opened the following year, after an agreement with the Blenheim Borough Council to trade the

High Street site for the old Civil Defence Headquarters site. Part of the brief was to create a multipurpose building. The Wesley Centre has been used as a meeting place and crèche among other things. Almost as old as the movement is the Hobday Organ, which was installed in 1905 and restored when the Wesley Centre was built. Places for the bus trip are limited. For more information about the celebrations and to enquire about the bus trip, call the Wesley Centre.

A 21-year-old Ashburton man who was the subject of a pursuit in Marlborough on Wednesday and received an immediate 28 day suspension of his licence was caught driving again by Police. Marlborough Police received information the man was back behind the wheel and shared that information with Canterbury Police. Shortly after an officer in Temuka

saw the man drive past. He was stopped and his car was impounded. The man was originally arrested in Marlborough last Wednesday after Police received several complaints about his driving from other motorists. He was clocked at 171kmh on State Highway 1 south of Ward and fled when Police indicated for him to pull over.

The car was stopped after a short pursuit and the driver arrested. On that occasion the man was charged with Failing to Stop and Driving at a Dangerous Speed and received an immediate 28 day suspension of his driver’s licence. He will now face additional charges in relation to driving while suspended.

By Adam Poulopoulos The Red Cross is marking 100 years in New Zealand with its annual appeal, and the Marlborough branch has jumped on board. Marlborough Red Cross has been holding raffles at Blenheim’s five supermarkets this week, and their appeal day is on Friday. On March 20 a bingo night is being held at Whitney Street School, while a fundraising dinner is being held at Bamboo Garden on March 31. An exhibition containing Red Cross memorabilia is being held for the next four weeks at Marlborough Museum. As part of the appeal pins symbolising the nurses in WWI, known as “the red roses of Red Cross,” are being given. Marlborough Red Cross service centre

coordinator Gayle Chambers says a big effort was being made to mark the 100year anniversary. She says the money raised locally would go towards continuing Red Cross services like Meals on Wheels and the Community Garden. “The more money the community donates the more money we can put into ensuring our services keep going.” Tickets for both the bingo night and fundraising dinner are available by calling the Red Cross rooms. Bingo tickets can also be purchased on the night, while remaining tickets for the fundraising dinner are very limited. Right: Louise Thompson and Rod Henderson will be participating in the Marlborough Red Cross’s annual appeal.

Marlborough Pipers March on to Nelson Weekly trips to Nelson and regular Skype music lessons culminate this weekend for eight Marlborough musicians as they join the Celtic Pipe Band of Stoke in the Royal New Zealand Pipe Band Championship in Nelson on Friday and Saturday. Since last October, eight Blenheim and Districts Highland Pipe Band members have driven over to Celtic Pipe Band practices once or twice a week. The Blenheim band is not able to compete at the event so the players chose to join Celtic for the experience. Celtic Band pipe major Bryce Gilchrist says it’s quite common for bandsmen play in more than one band, which enables them to be loyal to their own local organisation, but also to play in a higher grade band. He says 45 bands, including three from Australia, will bring more than 1300 players and officials, plus supporters to the city for the contest. Year 13 Marlborough Boys’ College prefect Brett McKeown is joining the Celtic Pipe Band’s Grade 3 Band in the championships. The build-up to the weekend event has meant weekly video lessons via

Massed bands. computer, Thursday night practice sessions in Nelson, plus Sunday afternoon marching practice. The remaining seven players from the Blenheim band will join the Celtic Pipe Band Development Band competing in its first ever national champs.

Overall, each band is judged on its musicality, precision, ensemble, marching and dress. The championships are held every March, alternating between North and South Islands.

Hiatus for Stars in your Eyes By Adam Poulopoulos After seven years of uncovering local talent the Spring Creek Lions and Districts Stars in your Eyes Show takes a break. The show will not be held this year, but organisers plan to bring it back in a new format in 2016. The show’s co-organiser Jon Moore says the committee were taking a break to explore their options for the future. “There’s been a lot of support and interest, and it has a great Mitch Alderlieste sings in last following, but we’ve got to take a step back and have a look at year’s show.

changing the format to keep the interest up.” Moore says the 2016 show may be held at the new ASB Civic Theatre. If that were to happen the show would have to be revamped from its current format, which involves a sit-down meal. He says national talent shows, like New Zealand’s Got Talent and The X Factor NZ had also influenced the decision. “It’s been seven years of doing the same thing, and there’s a lot of competition out there. “We’re exploring whether there’s something we can do

that’s unique to Blenheim and suits us better.” Despite the hiatus he says the show had been great to be involved with. “It gives a great buzz, and it’s our main project. “For people to get in front of 300 people with the spotlight on them, they have to be brave.” He says the new show would still be hosted by a celebrity MC, and may include a guest act. The proceeds taken from the show go back into youth projects in the Marlborough community.

Norm Fowke Glass No last goodbye Dear Ed, This has been bugging me for a while. I am hearing all these things about Gallipoli. It’s sad to think a lot of the families that had siblings there and in France have had no closure, no last goodbye. That’s why these people should be going - to be able to stand on the ground and to be able to say my blood runs in this soil, and to feel the energy of my sibling. That they have family and they have not been forgotten even though they are miles away. They are still loved. Half of these people who are going are not even family. Just the privileged, not the average Joe like many of our soldiers were. I had three uncles that grew up dirt poor with their dad. Mother died at 31 in childbirth. Back then living in Oamaru, signing up to go to Gallipoli and France would have been some kind of adventure. How sad. I never knew my uncles, but I have great photos, and lots of stories my dad told me about them. I am very proud to be a Kiwi AND of our fighting men and women. PS At dawn my thoughts will be in Gallipoli. Not Privileged Dorothy

Come on Blenheim Dear Ed, As an ex-Blenheim young bloke living next to the Gold Coast Airport in Australia I am amazed at how very little Blenheim and Marlborough actually pushes tourism. Is it left to all the big wineries to do their thing? Over here, Marlborough wines feature strongly in all the major wine stored but if you asked a punter where Marlborough or Blenheim is, the answer would be ‘buggered if i know’. I look online all the time, I look at ‘Take a Break Webcams’, Nelson have around five, Blenheim none, Kaikoura even has one. The rest of New Zealand has heaps. Close to Blenheim there must be some beautiful ar-

eas where a winery could put a webcam taking in the Marlborough Valley and advertise to the world. Is that too hard? What about the Queen Charlotte Sound? Imagine a webcam at Karaka Point, on a post or one of those houses looking over Allports Island, Karaka Point. It’s a beautiful part of the sounds, there is enough happening with the Interisland Ferries and small craft , plus the magnificent large cruise ships passing this fantastic vantage point. I just cannot believe a webcam has not been put there. I’ve always loved Waikawa. Is there anybody actually employed promoting tourism there?

France and Italy they plant the vines and water them sparingly (or not at all!) so the new plants will put down deep roots and grow quite well without constant water. Here the majority of vineyard owners water the vines constantly from the get go so the vines have shallow roots and can’t go a day without water. Also the vineyards should have a good layer of mulch on the vines but most don’t do this either. To me this is crazy and has such adverse affect on our environment. Surely the council is not this stupid and blaming the residents instead of the vine-

Fuel Prices Dear Ed, What shallow deception by the oil companies and government over fuel prices. Diesel almost hit $1 a litre and predictions were it would stay that way for about two years. Not to be! The greedy oil companies ratcheted it up on feeble excuses. The government no doubt dismayed its GST and levy rake-offs were down, turned a blind eye. There’s always the corrupt chance government colluded with the corporate oil companies to get the price back up to restore the GST take? Conspiracy nonsense? Nah! Hold on! Man has conspired since Julius Caesar’s days usually for power or greed or both. Don’t hold your breath about government doing an enquiry. It’ll be a whitewash and more deception. Meanwhile us plebs pay higher prices. Frank Henry

They need an injection of something if there is. You have a worldwide audience, but Blenheim and Marlborough seem to be more interested in keeping a massive secret. Is it Mayor Alistair Sowman and the council with their heads in the sand? Too scared that Marlborough’s secret as a brilliant destination might get out? Get the world looking at beautiful Marlborough, spend a couple of bucks on something simple like two or three webcams. I use webcams around the world to see what is happening, to assist in planning a trip. Water restrictions – Why do the council wait Kerry Jacques until the water flow hits rock-bottom before they put water restrictions on? They know there is going to be a water shortage at this time of the year. Water restrictions should be set for ALL Marlborough on 1st December which must yards! help with the supply. What about the vineyards? Dear Ed, Why is it that Cynthia Brooks is constantly telling Renwick residents that they are being irresponsible with water usage when I am not watering our gardens (we are just letting everything die and have not watered at all), and I am not seeing anybody else in Renwick watering gardens BUT I do see the vineyards around Renwick constantly watering their vines! (You can’t tell if you are driving past them but if you are walking by you can clearly see the precious water draining away). These vineyards use an awful lot more water than the Renwick residents do. In

Transport Operators By sea, land or air – they will get it there!

As a manufacturer, wholesaler or distributor, one of the biggest challenges is getting your products delivered on time and on budget. It’s important you find the company that is right for you. Each has its own unique service, from heavy lifting and container hire through to livestock and log cartage. Support local companies and in return you will receive the very best in customer service and most importantly - trusted partnerships.

deliverinsg the good

Renwick Transport owners Ian and Karen Higgins, pictured with daughters Jax Smith and Jen Hall who operate the business.

Sisters ‘truckin’ along Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk When it comes to running a busy freight business, sisters Jax Smith and Jen Hall have the winning formula - professionalism, top end service and plenty of humour. Jax and Jen operate their family business, Renwick Transport, which was first established by their parents Ian and Karen in 1994. In its beginnings, Renwick Transport consisted of Ian and one truck. Today it has 25 trucks, as well as machinery and around 30 staff members. “When starting the business, dad sold their personal car to buy the first truck, much to mum’s disgust,” Jax laughs. “It was just him and his truck but over time the business kept growing, to the point where they couldn’t do it alone.” Ian and Karen ran the business until 2005, before enlisting the help of Jax to help ease the load.

Jax, who was a qualified pharmaceutical technician at the time, quickly progressed from working in administration to handling the logistics. This was a challenge she enjoyed and that gave her more flexibility with her own family. Three years later the business’s growth demanded more help, so Jax ‘conned’ Jen into taking over the administration and finances, as well as the spreading and fertiliser division of the business which was later introduced. “I was working as a personal assistant to a real estate agent but Jax really needed the help and she can be pretty persuasive when she wants to be,” Jen laughs. Asked what they enjoyed most about the industry, they both reply in unison - “the challenge”. “Our staff and clients are fantastic too. We have a great team around us, plenty of laughs and good humour, and we also take a lot of

Choose service over price There are numerous transport companies in the Marlborough region, and they are all competing for your business. Many of these companies claim to be ‘top-rated’ or the ‘best’, but how can you be sure? It’s never a good idea to simply go with the lowest bidder because you might be sacrificing service and dependability for price. At the end of the day, it’s the service that you will remember most, and not necessarily the price you paid. Here are a few tips for choosing a reputable truck rental company that best fits your needs and your budget. • Ask people you trust Good news travels fast but bad news travels even faster. • Ask your friends and family if they have any transport company recommendations.

Odds are somebody you know had a recent experience, or they know somebody who did, and they can give you feedback. If their experiences were bad, you’ll be sure to hear about it and then you’ll know what companies to avoid. Or, if the job went off without a hitch, then you can start narrowing your choices down to a select few. • Call the companies Calling local companies will give you an idea of how they treat their customers. • Ask for a free quote and find out exactly what the quote includes. If the company is a good one, they’ll provide you with the information you want without hesitation and with no questions asked. There is a lot of transport operators out there, so by following these few simple tips, you will improve your chances of working with a reputable company.

We look at it as a challenge,” Jen says. “Especially around harvest time, which we are gearing up for right now, it goes mental for around six weeks,” Jax adds. “The main reason is that we are here for mum and dad,” they say. Marlborough Ltd While Jax and Jen have a good handle on the day to day operations, Ian still enjoys “We’re there when you need us” ‘popping’ in from time to time. “Dad loves it, he is more of a mentor now For your lifting & shifting needs we have a crane although he still comes in and checks on us,” available to lift in close 12000kg & 500kg @ 26m. Across the world The path from growing up in one of Peru’s biggest cities to living and working in Blenheim has been an interesting one for Marco Fernandez. Football, computers and visits back to Peru were the main points of discussion when reporter Sam Duff sat down with Marco last week. Marco Fernandez

Peruvian born Marco Fernandez immediately perks-up whenever the topic of football is bought up in conversation. The Managed Computer Networks engineer, who has lived in Blenheim for four years, says he cannot get enough of the sport. “It’s what we (Peruvians) like,” Marco says. “Everybody in South America plays football every week.” Asked who his favourite football team and player are, Marco immediately responds with Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo. When he is not playing football for Rangers Masters Club or having a go with a squash racket, Marco squeezes in time for his day job at Managed Computer Networks in Blenheim. The software and different features of networking computers are what make the industry so fascinating for him.

“I have a real interest in technology,” says Marco, who also has several cousins working in the industry. He also says the way computers make our lives in the 21st century so much easier intrigues him. Marco says he originally trained as a systems engineer at Santa Maria Catholic University in his home city of Arequipa. To even get into his chosen field of study he says he had to sit a five hour exam which is only held once a year. “It was quite difficult because you have to be really good at maths,” says Marco, who managed to win himself one of the 200 spots in the programme. It was while at university that he says he met his future wife, Claudia, in 1993. The two had friends in common and met at a social function, they have been together

ever since and now have two children. After leaving university, Marco says he started working as an administrator for the government agency responsible for nature reserves and the Peruvian jungle. A career in computers slowly developed while he and Claudia, a wine maker, lived in Peru until they moved to Auckland in 2004. “Moving from Peru and starting a new life in Auckland was difficult. Learning the language was hard.” Marco says before coming to New Zealand he knew just a small amount of English, mainly technical terms he had picked-up at university. After making himself at home in his new country, he says he decided to study a diploma in computing and quickly scored himself a job. The landscapes and the way people see

New Zealand as a great country are what drew Marco and Claudia to New Zealand, he says. Claudia was working as a wine maker and the couple ended-up working at the same company, which moved to Blenheim four years ago. So they packed their bags with their young son, now five, and moved to sunny Marlborough. “It’s a peaceful place,” Marco says. “The weather is beautiful and the people are very friendly.” Since moving to the area Marco and Claudia have added a daughter to their young family. Keeping the Peruvian culture alive in their children is important for the couple which means they make an effort to travel to their home country at least once every two years.

Finishing touches Want to add some sentimental meaning to your wedding? Here are some great ideas. • Did your mum preserve her wedding dress? If there’s no chance that you or a sibling would ever wear it, ask if you can add a sentimental touch to your bouquet by wrapping a piece of her gown around the stems. Odds are that if she’s kept it for so long, she’d be honored to have you use it in your wedding, even if you aren’t wearing it. • If Mom doesn’t want you to cut up her gown (understandable!), put it on display instead. • Gather the gowns of your future motherin-law and your grandmothers as well, if they saved them, and display them on dress forms along the path to your ceremony. • Engrave the title of your first dance song inside your ring. • Add a photo charm to the groom’s bouton-

Your wedding day wouldn’t be nearly as much fun or memorable without all your loving friends and family who traveled near and far to celebrate with you. Express your thanks with wedding favours that are meaningful and will be appreciated by your guests. Rather than waste money on items your guests will almost certainly throw away or leave on the tables, give favours that can be continuously used. Ideas include: • Table centres with multiple mini vases which guests can then take away with them at the end of the night. • Tree seedlings with guests names on tags that they can take home and plant. • A printed recipe for something that was on the wedding menu.

• A bottle of wine with a personalised label with your wedding date. • Fancy dress favours - silly glasses and stick on moustaches. • Homemade jam combining the bride and groom’s favourite fruits. • Jars of coloured candies. • Mugs with individual bags of your favourite coffee grinds. Fun elements You spend months (if not years) picking out the perfect venue, choosing the right dress, hiring the best photographer, videographer, DJ... the list goes on and on. So why not include a fun and quirky side to it as well? • Add a line for a DJ song request on your RSVP cards. • For a great photo opportunity, give out sparklers as favours. • Incorporate your love story into the aisle runner. • Hire a food truck for a late-night snack, or charm the younger guests with a special visit from Mr Whippy. • Instead of wedding favors, let people fill up bags with the candy of their choice. • Leave out advice cards near the guestbook or on the dinner tables. • Sometimes an array of bridesmaid dress colors can look prettier than just picking one. • Keep the program simple and to the point. • Put crayons and colouring books at the kids table.

• Event Organiser/Venue Management (Any venue) • Linen Hire • Chair Cover Hire • Sashes and Runners • New Decorative Items Arriving all the time • Licensed /Experienced Bar Staff Available Keep the program simple and to the point.

• Forgo confetti for colourful pom-poms your photos will be so much more colourful. • Lose the bartender and serve your alcohol in water coolers.

Treat yourself to a lunch out in Picton. You deserve it.

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk There’s something quite magical about walking into Hunter’s Cafe. With plenty of space, a relaxed vibe and a picturesque garden setting Hunter’s Cafe is fast growing in popularity. The cafe was launched in December last year after Hunter’s restaurant was closed. The idea came from Jane Hunter who had seen a number of wineries she visited in Australia operate a similar cafe style, offering a selection of ‘nibble’ platters. “We wanted to move away from having a restaurant setting, and rather create a comfortable space where people aren’t rushed and can enjoy nibbling on our platters.” The response has been hugely positive, she says. “People seemed generally pleased to have this as an option. “It’s certainly growing considering it has mostly been word of mouth since the cafe opened.” Hunter’s Cafe has an exciting list of platters including the following options: • Cheese • Mixed meats • Hot smoked King Salmon

• Paté, made locally • Children’s option Served on wooden boards, the platters are accompanied by a delicious, locally made chutney described by Jane as having “the most beautiful flavour”. “These platters are light, simple and nicely presented. “Perfect for those who want to relax in the garden with a wine or coffee and enjoy a snack,” she says. Also on the menu are paninis, fries, a decadent chocolate brownie and icecream with a selection of toppings. And if you really want to treat yourself, there’s the Hunter’s Wine Flight for $12. Simply select three wines from the list provided and sample some of what Hunter’s does best - winemaking! For a warmer and equally tempting option, there’s the Hunter’s Cafe Affogato with coffee. In the winter, Jane says there will be some warm dishes available including soup and pasta, and gluten free options are always available. Tick it off

With the change of season nearly upon us, now is the time to get those jobs done. Don't wait until the cold weather arrives - do it now! Cruise into winter knowing you have ticked it off!

Your home maintenance checklist Has your home maintenance checklist been ticked off before the short days and the freezing cold set in? If not, you still have time to complete all your check marks. Let us start with you home exterior. • Do your walls, pathways, or driveway still have their cracks, deteriorating bricks, concretes, and asphalts? • Is your wall cladding damaged? • Are your gutters still full of dried leaves or have suspicious blockages? • Have you inspected your roof for dam aged or frizzy shingles, blemished flashing, or leaky vents? During winter many people prefer to stay inside their warm home.

While you’re inside your home, you may want to feel more relaxed and comfortable so before the winter starts let us help you with your home interior checklist. • Have you checked all your pipes for possible leaks? • Do your windows and doors have gaps? • Are you thinking about changing the colour of your walls and ceilings? • Have you checked your fireplaces for ashes or dust build-up or are you thinking to go for an eco-friendly fireplaces or burners? • Have you collected that firewood yet? The above list is not a complete list of all the things you can do for your home but it should give you a leg up on the numerous tasks that need to be done before the winter starts.

You’re good to go

Last Thursday evening saw the second week of Marlborough Volleyball’s Fairweathers’ Senior Summer League being played at Stadium 2000. In Premier Grade, Marlborough Boys’ College played Woodbourne’s top team, the Woodbourne Cannons, in the first game of the night. A very well-fought game after the Cannons woke up and they then took it to MBC, winning the first set 25-20. The second set was very close with MBC Senior player Luke Kenyon having a great night of powerful serving and they took it

to within two points. However, too many mistakes from MBC gave Cannons another set win 26-24. Woodbourne Cannons really controlled the final set with Aaron “Styx” Hills playing some powerful spikes, and they won the third set 25-16. In C Grade, The Avengers wiped the floor with MGC C team in the first set winning 25-13. New team member for The Avengers, Alli Win, showed she is certainly an asset to the team by displaying some great serving and spikes. Evidence also points to more informal participation in physical activity as a result of environmental factors.”

Reeve racing towards rookie title Blenheim teenager Brook Reeve takes a big points advantage into the penultimate round of the New Zealand Formula First championship this weekend, and has the rookie title in his sights. The 17-year-old has racked up six podium finishes this season after winning the annual SpeedSport Scholarship back in May and embarking on a motor racing career from Kartsport. While Reeve is looking most likely to win the rookie title, he says that is not top of his list with just two rounds of the championship remaining. “I’m not focused on the title, just focused on getting more good results. If I achieve that then the title will come. I’m only taking one race at a time. “I know I’ve got a car that can win races. I’ve had one [race] win and I’m really keen to more before the season ends.” The Formula First championship heads to Hampton Downs this weekend before the final round at Taupo over Easter weekend. Paddon and Kennard stutter through Mexico By Jacob Page Kiwi rally ace Hayden Paddon and his Blenheim-based co-driver John Kennard leave Mexico feeling upbeat and positive for their next World Rally Championship event in Argentina in five weeks’ time despite not achieving the results they’d hoped for in Mexico. After a series of ups and downs, the pair eventually finished 17th overall. After a spin on Thursday night’s super special stage, a small error on Friday’s second stage resulted in broken suspension and the end of their day. Re-starting on Saturday in 26th position, the Kiwis were on the back foot, running first on the road in the ‘sweeping’ position, and then were further hampered

Kiwi duo Hayden Paddon and John Kennard had a tough debut at Rally Mexico by brake issues in the morning and overheating issues in the

afternoon. On Sunday’s final three stages,

Paddon reported they had a cleaner day, making clear steps forward to improve their feeling in the car on Mexico’s unique stages. “It’s been an eventful rally for us but I think there are plenty of positive things for us to take away. The car has been good. Coming into Sunday’s final stages, I watched the on-boards from my team-mates last night and I learned a few valuable things about my driving which I can now take forward to Argentina,” Paddon says. “In the long 55 km stage this morning, we saw these improvements with some good spilt times and this is what we will analyse with both the data and on-board footage in the coming weeks to further improve.”

Yachting clubrooms damaged by high tides Marlborough received some much-needed rain on Friday and Saturday, but the inclement weather also left its mark on the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club’s clubrooms. QCYC publicity officer Christel Hopkins says on Friday, the waves hammered a hole in the corner of the building and the stove went flying across the club kitchen. The clubrooms were also flooded, concrete bollards were shifted and jetty boards floated away. The tides rose and flooded the building again on Saturday. The building has been patched up and cleaned for now, but even before the floods the club had been saving up in their building fund for new clubrooms above sea level, and talks and initial

plans are in progress with the Marlborough District Council. QCYC is holding a fundraising dinner later this month to raise money for the new clubrooms, as well as the club’s fleet and coaching programme. The dinner will be held on Friday, March 20 at Drylands Winery. Well-known sailor and America’s Cup Comentator Peter Lester will be the guest speaker at the event. To sign up, or to provide auction items/vouchers, email Ange on giffrd@xtra.co.nz.

Several locally-raised Central RPC rowers have made it to the full and under-23 rowing squads for upcoming international meets. Sophie MacKenzie and Robbie Manson, of the Wairau Rowing Club, and Karl Manson and Tom Murray, of the Blenheim Rowing Club, are all in the full squad. They will be heading to World Cup meets in Italy and Switzerland, and the World Rowing Championships in France. As part of the men’s eight, Murray will also go to the Windermere Cup in Seattle in May. WRC’s Holly Greenslade and Hannah Bailey, and BRC’s Corey McCaffrey, have been selected for the under-23 crews to attend the World U23 Rowing Championships in Bulgaria.

Running Tomorrow is closing night for the 2014/15 Marlborough Harriers Summer Runners programme for 2014/2015. Tomorrow’s run begins at 6pm from 11 Forest Park Drive, and will be followed by a prize-giving and BBQ.
