Volunteering for the IOC Picton-based former New Zealand Hockey representative Barry Maister travels for about a third of each year for unpaid work, but he doesn’t seem to mind.

A volunteer for the International Olympic Committee, Maister left earlier this week to inspect South Korean city PyeongChang’s progress ahead of holding the 2018 Winter Olympics, and Beijing’s bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Beijing is in a two-way race with Almaty, Kazakhstan, to host the 2022 Games.

Maister will travel to the IOC’s headquarters in Switzerland next month to

help present the Beijing report, and a decision on the host city will be made at the end of July.

He says the work involves a lot of time reading on planes, but the perks far outweigh the negatives.

“I count myself very lucky. I love what I do.

“Every time I sit down at a table there’s someone from each continent there, and you get to meet a lot of people.

“It’s not unusual to sit around a table and think ‘there are six gold medallists sitting here.”

Marlborough Airport expansion enters new phase Airline passengers should expect temporary bathroom facilities at Marlborough Airport this week as the terminal extensions go into a new phase.

Purpose-built temporary arrangements located at the main entrance are in place, while the new terminal toilets are being built. Travellers are advised that, while this construction work is underway, there will be no facilities with disabled access.

The new baggage hall at the terminal is now complete and running smoothly with passengers able to retrieve luggage under cover.

With stage two of the project well underway, work is going on at the southern end of the terminal building where the passenger lounge area, with new CPR coffee shop, will be extended.

Ian Simcox forever a family man

by Jacob Page Blenheim businessman Ian Simcox will be remembered as a loving family man, shrewd businessman and as someone who was giving of his time and resources to the Marlborough community.

The owner of Simcox Construction which he started from scratch 31 years ago, died when his Robinson 44 helicopter crashed after hitting a power line in French Pass, near D’Urville Island about 5.20pm on Friday.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Simcox Construction general manager Antony Clark says Ian was a family man who loved nothing more than spending time with his two grandchildren.

Antony says he was always willing to help people who needed it but never wanted any attention for his good deeds.

“He was a shrewd businessman who was fiercely loyal to his family, friends and those he worked with.

“He was a very unassuming man but always willing to help people when they needed it,” Antony says. “It’s been amazing to hear some of the stories from people in the community he has helped over the years.”

“He and Margaret were a great team,” Antony says. “She really was his righthand man.”

Antony says business would continue this week with the family committed to maintaining the high standards Ian had set in the business. “(Monday) was an interesting day for our team but the support and reaction from everyone at Simcox has been amazing.

“The business holds great values and even in dealing with this adversity and Ian’s untimely departure, I know everyone is committed to ensuring things continue like that.

“On behalf of the Simcox team, it was a privilege to spend time with him.”

Antony says the family were thankful for the unwavering support of their staff.

A service for Ian will be held at the Clubs of Marlborough at 1pm on Friday.

STUDENTS INJURED IN CYCLE CRASH The coastguard and ambulance was called today at 1000 to treat two students involved in a cycle crash in Marlborough The incident happened approximately 7km north of the Portage Resort.

The two students, aged 14 and 15 were part of a school party from Wellington.

The patients suffered facial abrasions and wrist and leg injuries following the crash.

They were treated at the scene before being airlifted to Wairau ED by the Nelson Rescue Helicopter.

Minor water relief for Renwick Day-about sprinkler use has been reinstated for Renwick users after rain fell on Monday.

Council maintenance and operations engineer Stephen Rooney says the aquifer level has been increasing very slowly since the first week of March as Renwick residents eased up on their water use. However he said there is still a long way to go before things return to normal.

Man takes child on police chase through CBD A 41-year-old man is in custody following an incident overnight Tuesday in which police pursued a fleeing driver through the Blenheim CBD for about 16 minutes reaching speeds up to 65kmh in a 50km zone.

The driver came to attention when he was seen by a patrol

car to be driving the wrong way down Market St shortly before 11pm.

Police activated their lights but the driver fled.

Shortly after the vehicle came to a stop at a roundabout and police vehicles moved in and blocked its access.

The driver then rammed one of the Police vehicles and drove off.

He eventually stopped at a petrol station where police again blocked his access and the driver again rammed a Police vehicle, however Officers were able to remove the driver from the vehicle and arrest him.

On searching the vehicle police discovered a child, along with a loaded firearm, drugs and other weapons.

The man is facing numerous charges.

He appeared in the Blenheim District Court yesterday.

Visitors from the Chinese province of Ningxia are in Marlborough for a two-day visit to learn about wine tourism.

Ningxia, in the north of China, is where most of China’s wine industry is based.

The 17-strong delegation, led by Ningxia bureau of development of grape and floral industry director Kailong Cao, The group, made up of government representatives and industry leaders from Ningxia, were visiting New Zealand and Australia, mainly to study how other wine regions did their wine tourism.

it was particularly appropriate that of all the winegrowing regions in New Zealand, the delegation should visit Marlborough.

“Marlborough is the heart of the New Zealand wine industry and wine tourism is an important part of the industry.

“Marlborough’s wine, particularly sauvignon blanc, is known around the world.

People know about our wine, even if they aren’t sure exactly where Marlborough is.

It’s a key ambassador for the region, and a drawcard for many of our visitors.”

The delegation arrived yesterday, and visited Wither Hills and the Brancott Estate

Heritage Centre to learn how they did wine tourism.

Marlborough Research Centre chief executive Gerald Hope said the delegation would also be visiting Ormond Nursery’s property in Grovetown and seeing Klima equipment in action on Wednesday.

They would also visit Wineworks to see a world-class processing plant in full swing for harvest.

Ningxia’s wine industry was in the development stage, Mr Hope said. He expected the delegates would learn a lot from their visit to Marlborough.

Cloud formation stuns woman

By Celeste Lodewyk After laying a poppy for her father at an Anzac service in Seymour Square two weeks ago, Pauline Kelly was driving through Woodbourne when she saw an unusual cloud formation that prompted her to pull over and photograph.

It was the shape of a large ship.

“The shape of the cloud was so clear and unmistakeable, to me it looked like a battleship,” she says.

Interestingly for Pauline her father,

Francis Fitzsimons, had served in the British Royal aboard the HMS Charybdis which was sunk in action during World War Two. Francis was among the few survivors later found. He returned home to Liverpool to a huge welcoming procession then married and started a family. He died seven years ago.

“I couldn’t believe the timing, after having just laid a poppy for my father,” she says.

There’s a little area in Nelson and the trees make it different.

I don’t know what could be done. I think parking is a problem but most people won’t use the tiered carparking.

I like the idea of making it pedestrian-friendly, which would allow more alfresco dining. While they’re walking they’ll have more time to look at the shops.

Dear Ed, The Clubs of Marborough, what a joke!

The children on the dance floor unsupervised by adults, it’s more like a kindy service than an adult club for fee paying memebers.

There seems to be no rules, free for all, no shoes on, hats worn etc.

A notice board should be in the front foyer with club rules & dress code clearly written & visable to remind members. Committee should have the power to correct wrong doers & need to be visable to all who go into the club.

Kids out of step Dear Ed, We, as Clubs of Marlborough members, fully support ‘concerned’ about the children running, skidding and racing around the dance floor on a Saturday night as members are trying to dance whilst dodging them.

Where are the parents who are meant to be supervising their children at all times on the club premises.

Wake up staff and committee and please do something about this, staff have been approached about it two weeks ago, members were dancing by T.A.B because of this.

Different story if children were dancing, we are not babysitters for other peoples children, supervise your own.

Watered down Dear Ed, 1. Conders Bend! this was gifted to the Renwick People to help with future growth, it is been leased by the MDC to a vineyard, where is the money from this to help do things like say A NEW WELL in Renwick.

And MDC how much water is the vineyard at Conders Bend using?

2. Why not turn off all the water to the new houses that have been allowed by the MDC to be built after the last well was put in for Renwick, the rates the MDC have gained from these have not observably been used to upgrade Renwick to accommodate them (if this happen watch the preverbal hit the fan then).

If these people don’t like that DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT, your rates that you pay to the MDC are the ones not been used to ensure (under section 40(1) local government act) you are provided water.

3. Put on hold the Marlborough Civic Theatre (supposed to cost 17 million) and the proposed new Library and use the money instead to pay for Seddon to have Drinking Water and Renwick to HAVE water.

4. MDC you are an embarrassment to Marlborough with your posturing to make you look good with the flashiest buildings when you can’t even provide good clean water for the people who pay your wages.

5. And last but not least why are we paying the MDC and consultants?

Why not cut MDC out and just pay a consultant. Save a heap of money.

Angela, Havelock, flex mussels

By Adam Poulopoulos Angela Fredericks is due in hospital tomorrow as she prepares to give birth, but that didn’t stop her breaking her own Guinness World Record for mussel shucking on Saturday.

Angela shucked 100 mussels in one minute and 57 seconds at the Havelock Mussel Festival, bettering her own record of one minute and 59 seconds she set last year.

That followed on from her victory in the individual competition. She and second-placed Ray Bernal put their knives down simultaneously, and it was left to judges to adjudicate who shucked their mussels more cleanly.

Numbers attending the event returned to normal after last year’s event was less-well patronised due to weather warnings.

Overall, about 4000 people went through the gates on Saturday.

Marlborough 4 Fun chief executive Katrina Lange says

feedback has been positive, particularly relating to Benny Tipene, the main musical act, and Chelsea Winter, who returned to the event after attending last year.

She says event organisers were complimented by police, who had no incidents of note, and she was thankful for the group of about 100 volunteers who helped organise the event then run it on the day.

After the debrief the focus will turn to planning next year’s event. Katrina says an application will be made for more funds to boost tourist numbers.

“It (the event) has been going strong for quite some time.

One thing we want to look at is having funds to attract people from outside the region.

“They come and spend money in the area over the weekend too because they don’t stay just one night.”

Railway extension to be opened After years of planning and two years of hard work, the extension to the Blenheim Riverside Railway is set to be unveiled.

The Omaka Branch Railway Grand Opening is being held on Saturday from 2:30pm at the new Omaka Station, near the entrance of the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre and Omaka Classic Cars Collection.

Blenheim Riverside Railway Society president John Orchard says the final rails were laid early last week, and the final touches were being applied.

“Essentially it’s all done. As long as it doesn’t rain all week John Orchard, pictured here when the extension bridge opened we’ll be able to have everything in May last year. File photo. ready to go.”

John also expressed his sadness at the passing of Ian Simcox, who was heavily involved in the project as a patron.

Four locomotives, four carriages and a rail car will make the one kilometre journey along the extension, from Omaka to Brayshaw Park.

About 100 guests will attend the invite-only event. The next day, public trains will be running along the line.

The trains will start running on the first and third Sunday of every month, in conjunction with the rest of the line, but will run all three days of the Omaka Classic Fighters Airshow at Easter.

Music man “Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand”. - Stevie Wonder Music was something Ron Davis was born with.

He has lived, played and breathed music for the majority of his life, and now in his 70s Ron is continuing on with his passion and using it to entertain others.

Reporter Celeste Lodewyk sat down with Ron who shared his fondest musical memories, along with a few wisecracks along the way.

Born and bred in Marlborough, Ron was influenced by music from a very early age.

His mother, Dorrie, had a well remembered tradition of singing to her children every Sunday morning.

“We would all jump into bed with her and she would sing to us.

“She had this sad song she would sing, so we would all cry, then when she finished we would get her to sing it again.”

At the age of eight Ron picked up a ukelele and learned a few cords which fuelled his interest in music further.

But the moment he heard rock-and-roll his life changed.

“That was it from there. I was hooked,” he grins.

“I got myself a bicycle, did two paper runs and saved all my money to buy my first guitar.”

He took lessons from Neil Wilson, learning his first song ‘Black Board of my Heart’.

Ron’s first experience playing in a band came in a slightly mischievous manner.

“I would sneak out of my window at age 13 and meet up with a guy called John Madsen. I would jump in the back of his van with Wally Tombs and Roddy Boyce, a couple of flagons and head out to play the drums.

“I would get dropped back home around 1am and jump back through the window. You could say I began playing professionally at 13, and while I thought I was being sneaky I think mum knew about it,” he laughs.

This fired him up even more and after a few years he found himself in a band called The Shades.

“Mum’s friend Peggy Tombs had two sons, Wally and Lindsay who were very interested in playing guitar.

“We got together in the late 50’s and started

playing around Blenheim.

“We would play everywhere from the St Patrick’s Hall, which is no longer standing, to what is known now as the Boathouse Theatre and everywhere in between.”

Those were great times, according to Ron. “There were no big screen televisions, the pubs closed at 6pm so music was what entertained people.

“Everything you could tap, your toes and feet, you would. The music was simple, told stories and was happy.

“They were great years, we grew up in the best times I think,” he says.

In the late 60’s tavern licenses came in allowing them to stay open until 10pm, introducing a whole new time frame for The Shades to play.

“We would play Fridays and Saturdays at the Grove Tavern earning $2.50 an hour which was good money.

“Those two years were the happiest music years of my life, we had a ball,” he smiles.

In the 70’s the music scene turned to cabarets which saw Ron and his band mates playing for “every firm in Marlborough”.

“We were pretty much playing at cabarets every weekend at the racecourse. People were still up dancing and enjoying themselves but that started to taper off in the 80’s when television came to the fore.

“Playing at taverns started fading out because of the sports on television. People would complain that the music was interrupting what they were watching, the sports zone really killed it,” he says.

That was when Ron shifted focus and began playing in a duo with close friend Mike Reader, performing for people in their 60’s who “appreciated good music”.

The Shades, including John Davis, Ron Davis, Wally Tombs and Michael McConnell.

“We were really limited who we played for.

We had a rule, no rugby clubs.

“The boys and girls would be on separate sides of the room and not dance together, I see this now. Not a lot of contact or dancing which is a shame.”

Today Ron still enjoys his music, watching music biographies on DVD and operating his juke box and karaoke hire business - Music Systems Ltd or otherwise known as A2B Juke boxes.

His range of juke boxes a nd sou nd systems are hired out all over the region, with portable units designed to go on boats into the Sounds areas.

Many of the machines have been custom designed and modified to include speakers, lighting, touch screens, touch display and has music from the 50’s right Ron Davis has, and continues to live a very musical life. Street appeal tomorrow Child Cancer Appeal Month is upon us, and here in Blenheim there will be a street collection tomorrow, Friday and Saturday in Blenheim.

There will be collection tables at the three Countdown stores, New World Supermarket and The Warehouse.

The public is encouraged to show their generosity, as cancer affects so many people and children in the Marlborough community.

Please support the Marlborough Child Cancer Foundation and remember, all money raised locally stays in Marlborough to support local families.

During the past six months there have been several fundraising efforts by the general public to support the Marlborough Child Cancer Founda-

tion.

We need to acknowledge these people publicly as their efforts are appreciated by all the members of the foundation.

It is the children who reap the rewards with what the Foundation is able to give them and their families to make their time in treatment so much easier.

This support goes on longer than just whilst in treatment, as cancer causes some ‘late effects’, and the children need further help.

This can include help with school, eating, organ damage or any other effect. We try and make their lives as normal as possible.

The members in Marlborough are all very supportive people and some of them have been members for 30 years now.

Involved are parents, siblings, grandparents and some nurses who looked after children during their ‘cancer journey’, as well as many kind and caring people that just want to help.

Members of the Freemasons Lodge, known as the Dunedin Lodge of the English constitution number 931, made a donation of over $1000 to the Marlborough Child Cancer Foundation at Christmas last year.

Lodge members were represented by Chris Hobbs and Azher Mir, who are pictured with the children who are all members of the Child Cancer Marlborough Group, and chairperson Barbara Thompson.

Epic battle Two friends, Tristan Claridge and James Haining went head to head for over 15 hours in a challenge called the ‘8 Ball Epic’.

It’s a challenge which sees the pair play off against one another , and and supporters donate an amount of money to watch.

This year’s event was quite unique, in that Tristan had moved to Blenheim so in order to keep up the annual challenge, James travelled over from Brisbane to complete at the Clubs of Marlborough, raising $620 for the Marlborough Child Cancer Foundation.

Cod rules a hot topic

by Jacob Page Marlburians will get the chance to voice their opinions on blue cod rules in the Marlborough Sounds this week.

The Blue Cod Management Group is holding two “drop in” meetings this week for public consultation, one in Nelson today, and Picton tomorrow.

The blue cod fishery was closed in 2008 to help boost dwindling numbers of blue cod in the Marlborough Sounds.

It was reopened in 2011, with new recreational fishing rules in place, including a “slot rule” that meant recreational fishers

could only keep fish between 30 and 35 centimetres long.

The Blue Cod Call to Action Group say early indications show cod numbers are “severely depleted” by the slot rule.

The Government has announced it will make an announcement on any rule changes on October 1.

The meetings will be the only chance the public has to discuss the rules.

The Picton meeting will be held on Thursday, drop-in between 4pm and 9pm, Port Marlborough Pavilion, 181 Waikawa Rd.

Meg’s head shave in Nana’s memory

By Jacob Page Marlborough Girls’ College pupil Meg Lamb once did not cut her hair for two years, but by next week it will be all gone.

The 17-year-old is shaving it all off to raise funds for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand.

Meg says her Nana Nola is her inspiration for the fundraising after she died from blood cancer in January.

“I looked at all the girls at school doing it three years ago and thought it was really cool.”

The Year 13 pupil did not know of anyone with cancer at the time but that has since changed.

“Since my Nana was diagnosed (with cancer) I now have two other family members who have been diagnosed with it.

“I think not knowing anyone affected by it stopped me from doing it but now I am motivated by the affect it’s had on me.”

Meg has established a Facebook page called Meg’s Shave for a Cure where people can be linked to her donation page.

Meg says she probably will miss her hair but the cause made it worth the sacrifice.

“It’s really bad that it did get very long after I didn’t cut it for two years at one point,” Meg says. “It’s a worthwhile reason to do it and I’m excited about it.

Meg will shave off her hair in front of family and friends on March 27.

Wiffen claims second in farmer contest Renwick Young Farmers Club member Andrew Wiffen has finished second in the Tasman Regional Final of the 2015 ANZ Young Farmer Contest.

Wiffen took home $2900 worth of prizes, and also took out top prize in the AGMARDT Agri-Business Challenge.

The event was held in Kirwee, outside Christchurch, on Saturday.

Held at the Kirwee Showgrounds, a knowledgeable crowd watched the group of

eight contestants display the best of their farming knowledge and skill.

The contestants were put through their paces in a variety of challenging modules, from dairy goat milking to engineering, touching on all aspects of farming from practical, hands-on tasks to theory and business components.

The event was won by 29-year-old James Hoban, who will head to the Young Farmer Contest grand final in Taupo at the start of August.

The Flaxbourne A&P Show kicks off with equestrian events at 8:15am.

When it comes to country pride and putting on a great day’s entertainment, the Flaxbourne A&P Show is a shining example.

Being the 90th year, it can only be expected that the show continues to grow in popularity and success.

A committee spokesperson agrees, saying while last year was undoubtedly a fantastic show, this year is already looking to be bigger and better.

“Entries are up again from last year with more than 60 trade and craft sites, and many of last year’s new entertainment and activities have returned again for this year.

“There will also be a few new things in the lineup which the whole family can look forward to,” she says.

One example is the introduction of the show being broadcast on radio frequency 88.5 FM

band, allowing people to enjoy the show commentary from the comfort of their car.

“Some of the older generation might like to sit and watch the horses in their cars while listening to the commentator.”

New to the show entertainment will also be Don Stuart’s duck herding, as well as the new Wife Carrying competition through an obstacle course.

The Flaxbourne A&P show begins at 8:15 with the equestrian events.

The annual sheering competition kicks off at 12 noon and once finished, the Iron Man competition then takes over.

For those who enjoy the arts and crafts, there will be plenty to see and buy with everything from cooking, home produce, sewing and vegetables.

Skaters get vital experience Sport inbrief

By Jacob Page New Zealand speed skating coach Bill Begg believes Blenheim has the chance to produce national quality skaters if the sport continues to grow.

Bill brought 25 of his South Canterbury speed skaters with him to bolster the Top of the South Speed Skating Tour that was run in Nelson on Saturday and Blenheim on Sunday.

Rarangi crew runners-up The Rarangi under-23 men’s surf boat team secured two silver medals at the AquaPick New Zealand surf lifesaving championships in Gisborne over the weekend.

Theatre takes shape Architectural practice Shand Shelton has released artistic impressions of the ASB Theatre, due to open later this year.

The $20 million theatre, which will look over the Taylor River, is set to open in December.

Two theatres, the main theatre seating 711 people and a studio theatre seating about 200 people are both incorporated in the plans, as well as a function

room overlooking the Taylor River.

A commercial kitchen will be installed to service public spaces.

Back-of-house facilities include a green room, dressing room, orchestra assembly room and laundry and wardrobe areas.

Three offices and a meeting room will house the theatre administration staff.
