By Jacob Page Roger Wadham feels like a kid again when he walks into the hanger that houses his Nanchang aeroplane at the Omaka Aviation Centre.

He is spending 10 hours a day, six days a week working on his “new toy” which has an estimated cost of $100,000.

All in an effort to get it ready for the Classic Fighters Show over Easter Weekend for its maiden New Zealand flight.

“I always wanted a plane, ever since I was kid and this chance came together.

“I’ve got plenty of glider experience but this is my first power plane, I can’t get enough.”

“Sometimes you dream long enough that you have to tell yourself to dive in eventually.”

Roger says there will be nine other Nanchang’s from around New Zealand at the Classic Fighters and it will be the first time they will all be in the same place at once and able to do a flyover for the crowd.

Roger says he has an Air New Zealand pilot who will take control of the aircraft for the weekend.

“This will be my first Omaka show and while I won’t be flying, I’m just happy to be on the flight line.

“Everyone gets wrangled into doing Omaka sooner or later.”

He hoped to get his licence to fly later this year but admitted to being a bit nervous about it.

“I’m nervous as heck about it,” he says.

At the moment I’m just working on and Roger Wadham works on his Nanchang aeroplane ahead of putting screws in it and trying not to think its maiden New Zealand flight at the Omaka Classic Fighters at about the fact that one day I’ll have to fly it.

“These ex war planes have a lot of personality.

“They’re loud, they’re noisy, they’re oily but they’re 10 times more fun than you can imagine.

“They aren’t the kind of plane you take your girlfriend for a ride in.

“They’re the best boy toy ever made.”

The Nanchang was used in the 1950s to train pilots for the MiG-17 fighter jets, with the cockpit being an exact replica of the MiG-17.

Chairman of Omaka Classic Fighters Air Show Graham Orphan says the show is on track to be the biggest yet with more than 35,000 people expected over the three days.

“It will be the biggest war bird air show in the Southern Hemisphere which is pretty cool when it’s happening in our wee paddock.

“Some people just show up on the day and want to show off their plane but if they have an interesting aircraft, then we will do all we can to try to accommodate them to try to add to the colour and spectacle of the event.”

Sausage sizzle for Vanuatu relief

By Adam Poulopoulos Blenheim School students have come up with two ways to add to the Vanuatu relief effort.

A sausage sizzle will be held at the Blenheim School carpark by the courthouse on Friday, from noon-1:30pm.

The funds raised will be added to those accrued from the school’s mufti day on Thursday, April 2.

Principal Denyse Healy showed images of the devastation to students at

a recent assembly, and asked them to come up with ways to help.

Teacher aide Tania Palmer says it’s great to see the students getting involved.

“It makes the staff feel proud that they want to give help to people in need, so it’s awesome.”

A container for building materials and tools has also been set up at Crossroads on Monday to help with the Marlborough collection.

Besley to step down

By Jacob Page The Marlborough District Council will have a new chief executive for the first time in 15 years when Andrew Besley steps down in December.

Mr Besley says he made his intentions clear when his contract was renewed for a further three years in 2012.

“I had always intended to stand down at the end of this three year term and pursue other things.”

Mr Besley said working with the staff at the MDC had been a highlight of the job over a long period of time.

He says he will stay in Marlborough.

“Marlborough is my home and I have a few interests here.”

Mayor Alistair Sowman says Mr Besley had left the MDC in excellent shape.

“He has been a very savvy CEO and very prudent with the finances,” Mr Sowman says. “This is a low debt council.”

and it is disappointing to see him go.”

Mr Sowman says a human resources company should be appointed to oversee the job advertisement.

He said he would raise the matter at the next council meeting on April 2.

“It is a key appointment that councillors must decide upon so I’m sure there will be plenty of discussion.”

He says the chief executive’s impact on future councils is unknown but he was confident of finding a strong choice to suit the province.

Sowman says there will be interest internally for the role but he wanted to cast an open net to find the right applicant.

“I’m always open to promoting from within but with this role being an important one, I want to take it to the market.

There, he says he remembers his favourite truck, the Leyland Octopus.

“The old Hippo (Leyland Hippo) was 150 horsepower, and when I got the Octopus she was around 200. I thought ‘by crikey, there won’t be many catching me!’

“I used to say I didn’t have the fastest truck on the road, but I thought I’d make it bloody interesting for those who thought they had!”

In 1987 he and wife Zeta moved to Sydney, where he chauffeured for Lady Fairfax, but he returned due to homesickness.

On how he had continued to work for 70 years, he says the social part of the job kept him going back.

“I got quite a bit of business for Up Marketing. Talking, joking and being a bloody fool.

“And you’ve got to give good service.”

He says although he was still able-bodied, it was time to take a reduced role.

“It’s a good way to end my working career.

Seventy years working.”

HAGER TO BOOK FESTIVAL Investigative journalist, Nicky Hager is one of 10 guest speakers at this year’s Marlborough Book Festival, from July 24-26.

Seventy years working

By Adam Poulopoulos After 70 years in the workforce, Bryan Maxted is finally taking a back seat.

The 84-year-old has started on an on-call basis for Up Marketing & Sales, the company where he has worked for just over a decade.

The change marked nearly seven decades where he has driven cars and trucks on-and-off.

Born in Marlborough, Bryan says his dad taught him to drive when he was 13.

His progress into the workforce was accelerated by the family’s living situation.

“We lived in the Wairau Valley and there was no way to get to school in Blenheim,

SUDDEN DEATH A man in his 50s collapsed and died at Whites Bay on Sunday morning.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and the matter has been referred to the coroner

HUNTER WINCHED TO HOSPITAL A hunter fell approximately eight to ten metres down a steep rocky gully, near Okaramio, on Sunday morning.

The man sustained serious leg injuries.

The Nelson/Marlborough Rescue Helicopter’s onboard intensive care paramedic was offloaded close to the injured man to assess and stabilise him, however due to the nature of the terrain and the man’s location in the gully, the helicopter crew had to winch the injured man into the helicopter before transporting him to Nelson Hospital for further treatment.

Picton ponders water test

By Jacob Page More testing in the coming week is going to be required before Picton can take water from the Barnes Dam in the Essons Valley, as cyanobacteria has not cleared from the dam as quickly as expected.

Further samples will be taken next week with another week before results are received.

In the meantime Picton people are being supplied from the Speeds Road wells with a garden sprinkler restriction limiting watering to every second day.

Restr ictions on Renwick residents’ water use have been

relaxed to allow sprinkler use every second day but council water engineers are relieved that people are continuing to respect the need for careful water use.

“It’s good to see that water use has not shot straight up although maybe it’s the cooler days that is also helping to lower demand.

“It’s important that people stay sensible about water use because already the water levels in the town’s wells have plateaued after an initial recovery,” MDC operations and maintenance engineer Stephen Rooney says.

The Wairau River flow has

also dropped back since the recent rain and that would be affecting the aquifer recharge rate.

In Havelock, the restriction on the use of sprinklers to alternate days only will remain while the water supply still shows too much saltwater intrusion.

The Southern Valleys Irrigation Scheme is still in operation although council staff warn it may have to be shut off again in about a fortnight unless there is some rainfall at the scheme’s Wairau River headworks.

Broadband rollout complete

By Adam Poulopoulos About 12,500 houses, businesses, schools and health facilities in Blenheim are now able to access fibre after the town’s ultra-fast broadband rollout was completed.

The completion of the project, coordinated by telecommunications company Chorus, was celebrated at an event at BP Computers on Friday morning.

Com mu n icat ions m i n ister Amy Adams, Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith and Mayor Alistair Sowman were among those in attendance.

Blenheim is New Zealand’s eighth town to have full fibre access, and the third in the South Island after Oamaru and Ashburton.

Adams says fibre can encourage Blenheim’s youth to stay in town longer and bring more diversity to the job market while encouraging more people to invest.

“In towns like Blenheim that traditionally rely on one sector but which have UFB, there isn’t

Hannah hits right note

By Jacob Page Hannah Zydenbos thanked her parents for their patience “as I probably wasn’t very good” when she first started playing piano almost a decade ago.

Hannah has come a long way since then as was awarded the 2015 Queen Elizabeth II Music Award.

The Year 13 pupil at Marlborough Girls’ College was surrounded by family, friends and longtime mentor, Linda Lloyd as she was given the award by Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman.

“Without (Linda Lloyd) pushing me, I doubt I could have achieved all the things I have with my music,” Hannah says.

The accomplished pianist is also an avid drummer and has been a regular performer at charity concerts as well as Christmas in the Park.

As a drummer, Hannah is in her fourth year in the Marlborough Girls’ College Jazz Band and has performed

Sounds a bit fishy Minister destroying blue cod Dear Ed, I recently attended two meetings on Marlborough’s Marlborough Sounds Recreational fishery.

The first was for some envisaged group, called Marines Future.

It was a “babble-fest” by speakers from Auckland and a couple of locals.

The end of a seven hour day left one wondering what had taken up the time.

Someone asked what happened to Soundfish?

A very good question.

On Thursday I attended a Picton meeting on blue cod held by the Government and the blue cod management group (BCMG).

It was not consultation.

If Government and the BCMG were sincerely interested in the public views, it would hold meetings in Blenheim and Havelock.

Are they listening to the public?

It drags on.

As time goes on, the minister of fisheries is destroying cod with his ridiculous slot rule and penalising the public in favour of commercial.

Talk and more talk. It is called procrastination.

one on one with the Sun

Wheels of time Weir Broadbridge has been playing with trucks all his life and while the Broadbridge Transport owner may be on the countdown to earning his Super Gold card, he tells reporter Jacob Page about why he’s unlikely to step away from the 69-year-old family business any time soon.

Weir Broadbridge was destined to be in the transport industry.

His path was laid out long before he even realised it.

“Me and my brothers all played with trucks growing up,” he says. “What else could we do?”

His father, Cyril, started Broadbridge Transport with one truck in 1946.

Weir says he doesn’t remember wanting to do anything else but join the family firm.

“I started in 1968.

“We all just worked here,” he says. “I’m sure we could have done other things if we wanted to but what else do we know?

“Let’s be real about it.

“It’s in the blood.”

Weir and his three brothers have all worked there at some point.

Most recently Ross came back with his Marlborough Waste Bins to use the yard, while Leon retired in 2012.

Retirement was not an option for Weir.

“The profit margins get less and less as the years go by.

“The trucks get better but the competition is far greater nowadays.”

At its peak, Broadbridge had 45 trucks

and 55 drivers in the early 2000s.

Now with down-sizing and a partial buy-out by Renwick Transport in 2009, the company has seven trucks and a more focused reality.

“The reason for down-sizing was straight economics.

“Renwick and us share the workshop here and we obviously have our different areas of business now.

“We’ve been doing it six years and it has to work, you have to make it work.”

Weir says there are positives and negatives to having your last name attached to the business.

“It is good in a small town, everyone knows you but at the same time everyone wants to speak to you directly.

He says consumers have become more impatient over the years.

“Everyone wants job done today – right this second.

“That’s just how it is.”

Weir’s son, Adam also works in the company however, just like Weir, he wasn’t given a free ride into the business.

“There were no free lunches with our Dad, we had to buy our way in.

“Adam had always wanted to work here but I wouldn’t let him at first so he went away and got some experience.”

Weir says its passion and worth ethic that keeps him going.

“You either have a willingness to work or you don’t,” he says. “I really think you are born with it and thankfully I was and Adam has it too.”

He says the excellent staff and drivers keep the business ticking along, even though it had seen rough times a decade ago.

“I’ve had some great people giving me advice over the years especially when things weren’t so good.”

While Adam is set to become the third generation to run the business, it’s unlikely Weir will stop anytime soon.

Weir plays tennis twice a week but in true Broadbridge fashion, anything with a motor takes his fancy when he does get some free time.

“I do love this,” he says. “They will probably have to carry me out in a box.

“I certainly can’t retire because I’d drive my wife insane pretty quickly.”

Resource consent applications complex The impact of the latest raft of changes to the Resource Management Act is a more complex, more costly, but ultimately slower process for applicants seeking resource consents, says the chairman of Marlborough District Council’s Environment Committee Peter Jerram.

“It’s important that people seeking consents understand that it is not councils which are making it harder for people to get consents - it’s the legislative requirements.”

Applications must be absolutely correct with all the relevant material before they can be processed. The stricter requirements, and the limits now placed on council staff seeking more details, mean that more applications are likely to be rejected, he said.

The Marlborough District Council previously rejected fewer than two percent of applications as incomplete but, since the latest changes to the Resource Management Amendment Act 2013 came into full effect early this month, almost half the applications are failing to meet the required standard and have had to be rejected.

“The new reality is that applications for consents now require expert input and that’s a cost to applicants. But at the moment even the consultants are confused by the new requirements because it’s all so much more complex,” says Councillor Jerram. “While the intent was to shorten time frames and speed the process up, the reality is that that isn’t happening.”

The Marlborough District Council currently processes all applications for consents within the statutory timeframes.

However there is concern that the new regime will result in longer processing times before the applications can be accepted, and corresponding higher costs.

Councillor Jerram says proposed new amendments to the RMA may be made in the name of increased efficiency but the reality is that these changes will probably create another 20 years of arguing over interpretation in the Environment Court just as has happened in the past.

“Many central politicians have thought they were improving the RMA with their amendments over the years. Few have,” he says

Treat hearing loss early to reduce risk

A recent study shows a link between hearing loss and dementia, but a local audiologist says addressing hearing loss early can help reduce the risk.

A research team commissioned by the John Hopkins School of Medicine concluded that seniors with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time than those who retain their hearing.

The study focused on 639 volunteers, whose hearing and cognitive abilities were tested every two years between 1990 and 2008.

By the end, 58 had developed dementia, and compared with volunteers with normal hearing, those with mild, moderate and severe hearing loss were twofold, threefold and fivefold more likely to develop dementia respectively.

Clean air models are designed to burn away the particles left behind, and because wood naturally produces carbon dioxide when it burns, a clean air fire will burn that gas giving you a cleaner and hotter fire.

This can all be determined by the Heating Marlborough team when you make contact.

Something else homeowners should be thinking about now is having their wood fire checked and cleaned to ensure you get the best result.

“If a wood fire has the right parts in it, has been maintained and the chimney has been swept, you will get better efficiency from it,” he says.

Improving community well being by reducing the incidence and impact of cancer

Dr David Orsbourn of enhanceskin, (Nelson), continues to make fortnightly visits to Blenheim.

It’s almost eighteen months ago that he first performed Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) of Varicose Veins in Marlborough at the Churchill Private Hospital, and David finds that he no longer needs to spread the word about how wonderful this treatment is, because his patients are doing it for him. He says, “People can’t believe the difference it makes, it’s quite literally life changing.”

Now the word is out, David finds he is regularly treating family, friends and workmates of past patients who have seen the results from this new, non-invasive procedure last year and have just enjoyed their first summer of wearing shorts again.

But David stresses, it’s not just about the improved look of his client’s legs following treatment, it’s also about the relief from painful, heavy legs, he says, “Just last week I treated a client who drove to work every day, because

she couldn’t endure the short fifteen minute walk home.”

He continues, “She couldn’t believe how instant the relief from heavy legs was following the procedure, she was literally walking to work the next day.”

The great advantage this method of treatment has over surgery is that there is minimal downtime or impact on your usual daily living over the days following your procedure. You will simply need to wear compression stockings, (which the clinic now carries in a selection of fashionable colours) and avoid immediate international air travel.

Asked whether the surgery is painful, David assures us that he’s compared favourably to the dentist. Many people with varicose veins complain of pain, described as an aching or cramping in the legs.

Other common symptoms include tiredness, restlessness, burning, throbbing, tingling, or heaviness in the legs.

Pain from these veins is usually relieved by elevating the legs or by wearing support hose.

By Adam Poulopoulos Trains have started to run on the railway extension between Brayshaw Park and the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre.

The one-kilometre extension connecting the two was opened at a ceremony on Saturday afternoon.

The combined cost of the extension bridge, station and track was over $200,000.

Mayor Alistair Sowman says the track would appeal to locals, tourists and train enthusiasts.

“The challenge is now for council to figure out how to bring people here.

“We’ve got cruise ships stopping in Picton. What an opportunity to bring them up to Omaka by train.”

Omaka Aviation Heritage Trust chairman Brian Greenall says he is looking forward to his customers using the railway on a regular basis.

“This is something very special for us. At Omaka we were supportive of the railway coming here.

“It gives people who may not have transport alternative means of getting here.”

had reached the Omaka Classic Cars building, and the platform was constructed this year.

At the Omaka end a fence to separate the track from the surrounding land and a veranda for the station still need to be constructed.

Trains ran for the public on Sunday afternoon, and will be running on all three days of the upcoming Easter Air Show.

Rainbird returns to New Zealand

By Adam Poulopoulos After several years in the United States, a Blenheim-born basketballer is back in New Zealand, and playing for the Mike Pero Nelson Giants in this year’s National Basketball League campaign.

Adam Rainbird returned to New Zealand about a month ago after signing with the Nelson Giants late last year.

The 196 centimetre shooting guard/small forward spent four seasons playing college basketball at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, where he also completed a degree in business management.

Before that he attended Nelson College, captaining their basketball team.

Giants play the Welling-

ton Saints in an National Basketball League warmup game at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 on Saturday afternoon, but Rainbird is doubtful to play as he continues to nurse a back injury.

“It’ll be nice to come home, and I really wish I could play, but it’s always nice to come home,” Rainbird says.

He says the team is preparing nicely, but players like Mika Vukona and Josh Duinker are still yet to return to the fold.

With two tall American point guards on the roster, the Nelson Giants will play a different style of basketball this season, something Rainbird has called ‘positionless basketball.’

“There should often be mismatches on the floor.

We’ll look to post up bigger guards or use the speed of our bigs who are a little smaller,” he says.

“I’m excited about that.

It suits my game.”

The Nelson Giants have already played the Wellington Saints this preseason, losing 104-100 in the pre-season Blitz Tournament in Wellington.

They beat the Manawatu Jets and Taranaki Mountairs at the same tournament.

Tip-off on Saturday is at 1:30pm. The curtainraiser between the Nelson Sparks and Canterbury Wildcats women’s teams begins at 11:30am.

By Adam Poulopoulos The Marlborough Boys’ College stage band, and the school’s jazz combo, were in fine form as they played in the Forum on Friday afternoon.

The bands played for about an hour, starting shortly after midday.

MBC director of music Ray Russell says the show was a precursor of what’s to come.

“We intend to play more similar

shows this year.

“This is about them (musicians) getting used to playing in public.

It’s good for their confidence levels.”

The stage band usually has 28 pieces, but played with 20 on Friday.

Cornelius’s 98 was a major contributor to Wairau’s victory. Batting first, Wairau scored 263-9, before bowling out Celtic for 177 in the 42nd over.

Coming in at 52-2, Cornelius scored his runs off 78 balls in an innings which included eight fours and four sixes.

The game was one of three finals at the ground on Saturday. In the second-grade T20 final, United Country and Vineyard Cricket beat Guthrie Bowron Renwick by 60 runs, and Wairau beat Criterion Hotel Wairau Valley by 104 runs in the third-grade 50-over final.

The Marlborough Harriers Cross-Country Scratch Race is on Saturday at the Taylor Dam. Grades for under-10s start at 2pm, with the rest beginning at 2:10pm.

They opened their season with a pack run and committee meeting recently, and their next non-competitive track run is tomorrow night, beginning at the Redwood Community Hall at 6pm.

John and Brigid Forrest were among the 50 to take part in the Forrest GrapeRide taster on Saturday.

The riders completed the 101 kilometre GrapeRide course in three stages, stopping at Picton and Havelock during the journey.

The course took about six and a half hours to complete, although participants were not timed.

Brigid says the event was a nice way to lead into the main event

this weekend.

“This is why John and I got into cycling. There had to be a carrot, like a café or coffee shop we could stop at along the way.”

The GrapeRide registration is being held on Friday from 10am, and the main event starts the following day at 6am with the two-lap ‘Magnum’ riders. The time trial scheduled for Friday has been cancelled due to a lack of entries.

By Adam Poulopoulos While bowls clubs around the country close their doors, a group in Picton is going against the tide.

The Waikawa Indoor Bowls Club has been founded in time for the Marlborough season.

The club is opening with a welcoming ceremony at the Waikawa Marae on Wednesday, April 1, beginning at 6:30pm.

Club nights will be on Wednesdays at the Marae, with members meeting at 7:15pm for a 7:30pm start.

Club captain John McCarthy says he approached the Marlborough Indoor Bowls Association about starting a club at Waikawa.

“The association is delighted. This is probably the only place in New Zealand starting a new club up.”

McCarthy has been playing bowls at Linkwater for 22 years and living in Picton for nine, and he says he is excited to be able to play a little closer to home.

“The Linkwater club is in good heart and

the time is right to start a club in Picton.

“If we can get 30 to 40 people it’ll be one of the biggest clubs in Marlborough. Every second person who’s spoken to me has said they’re coming along.”

The Waikawa club is Marlborough’s 11th, and McCarthy says the club is already planning to have home and away fixtures with Linkwater and Rapaura each year, and to enter a team in the Marlborough competition.

He says he wants to see the game continue to flourish.

“It’s a great game and I don’t want to see it die. It’s as simple as that.

“It’s something to do on a Wednesday night. There’ll be nothing to watch on TV when the cricket (world cup) is over!”

The indoor bowls season runs from April to October. Anybody wishing to be a part of the club can turn up on a club night to register.

League The Wairau Taniwha were beaten 68-8 by the Victory Phoenix in the opening game of their season in Nelson on Saturday.

The Phoenix led 34-0 at halftime.

The Taniwha have a bye this weekend.

Squash This weekend sees the best players in the region competing for the Marlborough Squash Open title.

The event begins on Friday and finishes on Sunday at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000.

The Friday session is in the evening, from 5pm-11pm, while the weekend sessions both start at 8am and finish at 7pm on the Saturday and 6pm on the Sunday.
