“The event couldn’t have gone better, it was a rousing success in every way,” Orphan says.

“I haven’t seen exact crowd numbers but we had a record crowd on Saturday and the same on Sunday.

“I can generally tell by sitting at the top of the grandstand and I couldn’t believe the amount of people.”

“It was great to get three Spitfire’s here.

Being Australian I knew there were two Spitfire planes in Australia and two in New Zealand so it was great to be able to offer the crowd something unique.”

Brothers Nicholas and Elliott Adcroft had come over from Wellington for the event, while John and Olive Gray had travelled from Christchurch.

“We are both aviation enthusiasts so we had to come up and see all of this for ourselves,” John says.

The weekend got off to a bumpy start when a Focke Wulf FW190, piloted by Frank Parker crash landed during practice on Friday.

Frank walked away from the accident uninjured.

Graham says it was the first time an accident like that had happened at the event.

“It was a mechanical issue, one of the pedals failed and it was just one of those things.

“It will put the plane out of action which is a shame but “I’ve spoken with owner Murray Myers who is keen to have it flying again for our next event in 2017.”

Funds raised from the 2015 airshow would go into adding an exhibition hanger for World War Two aircraft.

“We have already started clearing the area for where we want it to go and I’m hopeful we can start the foundations by the end of this month,” Orphan says.

Denis enters final stretch

By Jacob Page Denis Teeling’s vision for his 100 day salute to the fallen service men and women of Marlborough has exceeded his own expectations.

“I was expecting to have some nights where I was expecting to be there alone with the choir but that hasn’t happened.”

Denis has played ‘The Last Post’ for more than 80 consecutive days at the 6pm ceremony where names of fallen men and women from Marlborough are read out and remembered as the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli Landings is set to be remembered on April 25.

“It has proved immensely popular.

“I think people want to recognise each name that is read out and mark the contribution they have made,” Denis says.

“Every night is different in that regard, yes, how we do it is the same but every person has a story.”

Denis says he has still struggled playing the cornet throughout each

ceremony after being reacquainted with his childhood instrument of choice.

“I’ve struggled with the cornet and some of the RSA guys want me to play the bugle which is even tougher.”

He says he has enjoyed the national exposure, which will include an appearance on One News that was expected to be last night.

“The interest nationally was special especially at the start when we hadn’t started yet.

“I get a bit nervous when the cameras are there and it’s no longer a little ceremony to mark someone’s sacrifice.”

Denis says he has been pleased it has not rained yet during the services at Seymour Square, though the forecast did not look promising this week, “Maybe there is a little microclimate around the cenotaph and I’ll be all right,” he says.

ALLERGIC REACTION RESCUE The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter was dispatched to Arapawa Island in the Marlborough Sounds on Sunday morning to attend to a 69-year-old Hastings woman suffering an allergic reaction after being stung by a wasp.

The helicopter was able to hover on the wharf at the island property to uplift the patient after being attended to by the helicopters intensive care paramedic; she was then flown to Wairau Hospital for further treatment.

Today Jeremy McKenzie and Angus Pauley will be awarded medals by the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand for their bravery.

McKenzie and Pauley rescued then 11-year-old student Tenishya McIsaac as she was swept down the swollen Taylor River last year.

The ceremony begins at the Council Chambers at 4pm.

Lost tourists found Two American tourists who became lost in the Mt Fyffe area have been located by a helicopter searching for them.

The pair were found in the Kowhai river bed near the Kowhai hut.

They told searchers they had made it to the Kowhai hut the previous evening but had decided to continue walking and ended up sleeping out in the open.

The man and woman, both aged 21, went for a day walk on Monday.

They were last seen about 3.30pm by a member of the public in the back of Mt Fyffe.

A friend raised the alarm about 9.30pm when they had not returned.

The pair were not equipped for an overnight stay and had light clothing, water and snacks Police would like to thank the search and rescue volunteers involved in this search.

Department of Conservation rangers have rediscovered a native herb that was believed extinct and another herb thought to be extinct in the wild.

Dysphania pusilla, or pygmy goosefoot, had been one of eight native plant species listed as extinct until its surprise rediscovery in summer.

By coincidence it was found at two widelyseparated sites within a couple of weeks – including in Molesworth Station in South Marlborough.

Another native herb, Leptinella filiformis, or slender button daisy, also found in Molesworth, hadn’t been seen growing wild since the late 1990s though it was being cultivated at some protected sites.

DOC director-general Lou Sanson said these were remarkable rediscoveries and he commended the rangers for their work and observance in finding the species.

“The last record of pygmy goosefoot was from 56 years ago and amazingly when rediscovered this year a few thousand plants were seen at both locations.”

Twizel ranger Aalbert Rebergen discovered pygmy goosefoot growing in the Ruataniwha wetlands and was mystified as to what species it was. Botanists he initially approached to identify the species suggested other plants.

Aalbert was sure it wasn’t them and pursued identification, eventually getting confirmation it was Dysphania pusilla.

Leptinella filiformis, or slender button daisy, is one of two native plants rediscovered in the Marlborough region over summer.

The rediscovery of wild slender button daisy was recently confirmed after plants rangers collected in summer were grown on till they flowered, enabling the species to be verified.

Wairau ranger Jan Clayton-Greene had seen the herb on an earlier visit to the remote Clarence valley area but at the time didn’t recognise the species.

I think it’s good. It’s good to have a time of the year, whether it’s Christmas or Easter, when people are forced to take time off.

I’m not too sure. I didn’t know about them.

I’m not worried about the Easter trading, only about the rain.

Just that they’re inconsistent. I work in retail and everyone should know what’s going on.

They’re OK. You’ve got to have some time when shops are closed. You can’t shop 24/7.

Norm Fowke Glass More crossings needed Dear Ed, On Easter Saturday I walked to McDonalds with my six year old and my baby in his pram.

We walked along Grove Road and over the bridge leading into town where we then needed to cross the road in order to get over to the McDonalds/ New World side of town.

Dissapointed that there was no pedestrian crossing to do this, we just had to wait for a gap in the constant stream of cars.

Even more disappointed how not one car was prepared to stop for a few seconds so a woman and her kids could cross the road!

Sunshine hours to be taken with a grain of salt Dear Ed, I believe the time has come for the Top of The South to stop being so polite about Whakatane’s abrupt self proclaimed elevation to Sunshine Capital of NZ. Prior to the installation of their current sunshine recording system Whakatane was getting less sunshine than Wellington, their annual average was almost 200 hours a year less than Blenheim and their previous recording was 500 hours less

than Nelson.

In their first year with the new installation they gained 500 hours on that previous recording making them third sunniest centre in NZ. The following year they gained a further 150 giving a total of 2703 hours - a total NIWA described as anomalous.

Follow the money Dear Ed, My own feelings are that the MDC could not build the new theatre on the site of the original theatre because it wouldnt have benefitted anyone!

I believe the location of the new theatre has a lot to do with benefitting certain people.

Just north of the theatre is Youell House, the owner being the now deceased British / Coventry man Alf Youell, who was and still is one of Marlborough’s greatest benefactors.

Note that as of 01/07/2009 the three apartments on the fourth floor of Youell House were still for sale.

A few offers had been turned down.

Just south of the new theatre is the Criterion Hotel, whose owner is the MDC deputy mayor Terry Sloan.

On a personal note, I emailed Alf Youell several times about my issue, he never replied.

Alf Youell was a good friend of the late Ralph Ballinger who visited my property in relation to my large bluegum tree.

I told Ralph about my issue, but he ignored it.

Vanuatu relief effort continues

By Adam Poulopoulos Money and supplies contributing to the Marlborough relief effort for Vanuatu are continuing to come in.

So far, supplies like roofing iron, timber, water tanks, nails, garden and carpentry tools and an ultrasound machine have been donated to the Project Pam Appeal.

The storage container is situated at the Crossroads Charitable Trust building on Redwood Street.

As well as supplies, about $4000 has been accumulated in the Project Pam bank account.

Convenor Yvonne Dasler says she has been pleased to see the Blenheim response.

“People are really being extremely generous.

“Blenheim has really taken the Ni-Van community into their hearts, and it’s been great to see their response.”

The Marlborough relief effort is focused on the rebuild.

Clothes and food are not being accepted because aid organisations are in a better position to deal with those requirements.

Dasler says the container will remain in Blenheim for “a few weeks,” as there needs to be a safe place to dock in Vanuatu and warehouse space open to store the supplies.

“At this stage it is a waiting game. Things are still coming in.

A contingent of personnel from the New Zealand Defence Force, the New Zealand Ministry of Health, and the New Zealand Fire Service deploy from HMNZS Canterbury to Port Kwmie on Epi Island, Vanuatu, to commence operations in aid of local communities in the wake of Cyclone Pam.

“I’m sure people have had time over Easter to go through their garden shed and see what they can contribute.”

Shear determination Marlburian Sarah Higgins’ recent win at the Golden Shears shearing festival made her the first to achieve a unique double.

She spoke to Adam Poulopoulos about her feat, and pursuing her passion around the world.

Sarah says she did not know what she’d achieved when she won the Novice Shearing title at the Golden Shears shearing festival last month.

With the win, she became the first person to win both the Novice Shearing and Junior Wool Handling titles at the festival, after she won the wool handling crown two years ago.

“I was pretty surprised.

I was like ‘surely not?’ she says.

“I know a few people who have competed in both.”

Born in Havelock, Sarah began shearing during her school and university holidays and was introduced to it by her mother, who worked in the industry.

Sarah’s family currently live on a lifestyle block in the Wairau Valley.

After leaving school she completed a three-year Bachelor of Commerce and Agriculture degree at Lincoln University before she began travelling the world.

The work means constant hot weather and a healthy pay cheque, but she says a trip to Colchester, Essex in England was eye-opening.

“It’s almost backwards.

They’re all outside working on trucks in the heat – they don’t have shearing sheds like we do.

“When you go to the cities they’re so much more populated, and more city-goers have no connection to country life at all.

“They have no idea about shearing a sheep.”

She says New Zealand’s productivity is higher than England’s due to the subsidies given to British sheep

farmers.

While in the United Kingdom Sarah explored Scotland and Wales, taking in a shearing test between New Zealand and Wales at the Royal Welsh Show.

Sarah has also worked in South Australia, and plans to head to northwestern Germany to work shortly.

Earlier this year she was working in Lumsden, and she says she has adjusted to living out of a suitcase.

“I haven’t really got a base.

“I’ve got stuff spread all over the South Island!

“There’s still stuff with flatmates in Christchurch, up here and down south.”

Recently she completed her first full day of shearing in the Malvern Hills, up the Waihopai Valley.

She says after shearing 80 sheep, she was sore, but even wool handling helped her build fitness.

“It depends on what size the shed is, but I can pick up 200 fleeces in a day, and each of those can weigh up to eight kilos.”

Sarah was a keen netballer, but since the travel has made it difficult to play regularly, she has taken up squash instead.

“It doesn’t take much to squeeze a squash racquet into your suitcase,” she says.

Long-term, she aspires to make the New Zealand wool handling team, but says more travel may be on the agenda first.

“The thought was to do two years travelling, but there are still places to go.

Pressure on water usage to continue

By Jacob Page Rain in Marlborough’s high country is eagerly awaited as water supplies continue to be under pressure going into autumn.

Rain was falling in the Wairau River catchment on Tuesday morning.

There was 20mm by noon at Top Valley in the Richmond Range and 30-50mm at Wakamarina/Rai Valley.

However, sustained rainfall is required to take the region out of its current drought conditions.

The Wairau River flow has slowed and the level of the Wairau Aquifer at Renwick has dropped about 400mm during the long Easter weekend.

Over the next day or two, Marlborough District Council water engineers will be assessing the need for further restrictions

on Renwick’s domestic irrigation and also on the water take from the Southern Valleys Irrigation Scheme.

In Picton, tests have confirmed the cyanobacteria previously detected in the Barnes Dam has cleared.

It is now possible to treat the water so that it is safe for domestic use but the stale water from the dam will release a taste and odour so water engineers are hoping for a good fall of rain to flush out the dam before they reconnect this water supply.

In Havelock, salinity in the water supply continues to be a problem and water demand went up again during the long weekend, attributed to the increase in activity at the marina during the holiday break.

The current household water restrictions remain in place in all townships.

Rain coming but not much

By Jacob Page The severe weather warning that was issued for Wednesday for the top of the South Island is likely to miss Marlborough.

While areas of Nelson and Tasman are expected to be drenched with rain, Marlborough’s dry land will have to make do with scattered showers over the next

two days.

A Metservice spokesperson said occasional rain was likely to fall in the Marlborough Sounds area.

Rain is forecast for Blenheim until Friday with temperatures likely to be in the low 20s.

Cowley returning One of New Zealand’s most beloved authors, Joy Cowley, is coming to the Marlborough Book Festival this July.

Tickets are now on sale for the second annual Marlborough readers and writers festival, which will be held from Friday July 24 to Sunday July 26.

Festival trustee Karen Walshe says the festival had built on its hugely successful first year, increasing the number of guest speakers from six last year to 10 this year, and the number of venues from two to four.

As well as Cowley, the author list includes Patricia Grace, Fiona Farrell, Joe Bennett, Liam McIlvanney, Nicky Pellegrino, and investigative journalists Nicky Hager and Mike White.

The festival also features sessions about Our Big Blue Backyard, a popular documentary series which screened on TV1. The producer, Judith Curran of Natural History New Zealand, is coming, along with Janet Hunt, who has written a coffee table book of the same name, which explores New Zealand’s 38 marine reserves.

Healthy food for pregnant mums You know you should always eat healthy, but maybe, just maybe you used to cheat a little.

Now that you’re expecting, you are trying to think much more carefully about what you’re feeding yourself because the foods you eat are the main source of nutrients for your growing baby.

During pregnancy, for example, you’ll need protein and calcium for your baby’s tissues and bones.

You’ll also need extra folic acid to protect against neural tube birth defects, as well as more iron to help red blood cells carry oxygen to your baby.

Get off to a good start with these pregnancy super foods.

Whole grains Enriched, whole-grain breads and

cereals are fortified with folic acid and iron and have more fibre than white bread and rice.

Work whole grains into your day: oatmeal for breakfast, a sandwich on whole-grain bread at lunch, and whole-wheat pasta or brown rice for dinner.

Beans Add black beans, white beans, pinto beans, lentils, black-eyed peas, and kidney, garbanzo, or soy beans to your diet.

Try them in chilli and soups, salads, and pasta dishes. Besides providing protein and fibre, they are also good sources of key nutrients, such as iron, folate, calcium, and zinc.

Salmon Omega-3 fatty acids are good for your baby’s brain and eyes, and salmon is a great source. Plus it

Salmon is also relatively low in mercury compared to other fish.

Try it grilled, broiled, or on a salad.

You can safely eat up to 12 ounces of low-mercury fish, such as salmon, per week.

Berries Blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are delicious snacks and taste great in pancakes and on top of cereal. Berries are packed with vitamin C, potassium, folate, and fibre.

Low-fat yoghurt One cup of plain, low-fat yoghurt has more calcium than milk, is high in protein, and doesn’t have the added sugar of flavoured yoghurts.

Dress it up with fruit or crunchy, whole-grain cereal.

WHEELER SELECTED

Central Districts fast bowler Ben Wheeler has been named as a standby player in the Black Caps squad to tour England later in the year.

Wheeler is available for two warm-up matches to start the tour, covering for the unavailability of several players involved in the Indian Premier League.

Dragon Boat nationals Marlborough Dragon Boat crew Simply the Breast recently attended the National Dragon Boat Champs at Lake Pupuke in Takapuna, Auckland, on March 28 and 29.

It was the largest Dragon Boat regatta held

in New Zealand to date, with 40 teams taking part.

Simply the Breast raced with 18 paddlers instead of the usual 20, and improved their times from the South Island Champs two weeks ago.

In the 500 metre and

two kilometre races they placed fifth, and they finished fourth in the 200m race.

A new event was introduced at the regatta, a race with 10 crew in the large boats, an event Simply the Breast finished fourth in.

Crew member Wendie Partner says of their 18 paddlers, four had never attended a National Champs before, so this was a big education for them.

She says the crew’s sweep Margaret Hockey recently achieved her

level 3 accreditation and this was her first time sweeping at a National Champs competition.

The South Island teams featured very well in the medals with Canterbury schools and the Breast Cancer team receiving several accolades.

Reeve finishes fifth

By Adam Poulopoulos Brook Reeve has closed his season strongly at the final round of the Vortex Racewear Formula First Championship.

He finished with two podium finishes from the three races in the final round, held in Taupo over Easter Weekend.

The results meant he took fifth in the series overall, to add to the Rookie of the Year title he secured in the previous round at Hampton Downs.

During the season, Reeve claimed 10 podium finishes

Brook Reeve. from eight rounds, and 24 races altogether.

Those finishes included his maiden race win, secured at Pukekohe late last year.

Reeve won the chance to complete his first year on the Formula First circuit after he was awarded the SpeedSport Scholarship last year.

He became the first scholarship driver to secure the rookie title before the last race of their first season.

Summer league heats up Last Thursday evening saw the sixth week of Marlborough Volleyball’s Fairweathers’ Senior Indoor Summer League being played at Stadium 2000.

Woodbourne Cannons played Treefellas in a good game but it needed a big step up by Treefellas if Cannons were to be troubled.

There were finally some good rallies in set three after everyone warmed up.

Luke Kenyon played well for Treefellas and there were

some crowd pleasing spikes from Aaron ‘Styx’ Hills and Jack Wheeler for Woodbourne Cannons. Set scores were 25-12, 25-14 and 25-18.

The second game in premier grade was very competitive, making it a great game to watch and was played between Woodbourne Warriors and Marlborough Boys’ College Seniors.

Both teams were hunting down everything and there were some great digs off big spikes.

Fabio Raimundo played well for Woodbourne Warriors while brothers Adam and Jack Pope set the foundation for a great win in set three for MBC. The final score was 27-25, 17-25 and 25-23.

The ladies and men of Pure Samoa and Uso Fiafia chase down everything and Thursday’s game was no different.

Pure Samoa let Uso get too much of a head start in sets one and two and were always playing catch up.

They dug deep in set three though for a final consolation point.

Nimo Taala had a good spiking game again for Pure Samoa backed up by some good play and serving from Faamanu.

Andrew Moli led Uso well and he also played a great game with some nice touches on the ball.

Set scores were 25-19, 25-12 and 18-25.

CENTRAL REMAIN TOP

Central maintained their unbeaten start to the Marlborough Division One rugby season, beating Harlequins 13-6 at Lansdowne Park on Thursday night.

Central scored the only try of the game with minutes remaining to break a 6-all deadlock and lift their winning streak to three.
