Anzac rules

By Jacob Page Former Marlborough Girls’ College pupil Gili Sharrock has designed the guernsey the St Kilda AFL team will wear for their Anzac Day clash against Carlton in Wellington on Anzac Day. The 21-year-old is in her fourth year of a design course with honours at Massey University and leapt at the opportunity to design the Anzacinspired playing strip which will mark 100 years since Australian and New Zealand troops landed at Gallipoli.

“We were both really excited by the opportunity to do something like this, both from a sports sense and to commemorate the 100 years since Gallipoli.”

“Massey has an in-house design part called Open Lab which allowed us to do this.”

Gili says one of the challenging things was balancing the Anzac look with the traditional colours of the St Kilda uniform and ensuring the strip was still pleasing on the eye to those watching live at the ground.

“We had to make sure it worked for everyone but it was a lot of fun working with St Kilda and once

we’d come up with a main design it was just a matter of tweaking it.”

The guernsey includes the Anzac symbols of both nations, New Zealand’s poppy and Australia’s rising sun and there are 100 notches to symbolize each year since the Gallipoli landings.

Gili was mentored by the team that produced the guernsey for the fixture last year.

“I’m really pleased with how it has turned out and it was a real honour to be part of the project.”

Kiwi-born St Kilda player Shane Savage said it would be a big moment for him to wear the strip.

“For me, wearing the guernsey will be a special way for me to pay respect to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for both countries,” he says.

Stephens’ family donates Anzac shield

By Jacob Page Harry Stephens has presented the Marlborough RSA with a kauri shield to commemorate fallen soldiers on behalf of his family.

His brother Stan did the woodwork, while Michael Wrat did the metal work for the soldiers.

The shield has the Anzac-inspired one dollar Australian coin and the New Zealand Anzac 50 cent piece.

Harry says he hopes the shield will be enjoyed by everyone who views it.

“It will mean something here and there have been family members who have put a lot of work into it so (the RSA) is the best place for it.

“My brother is pretty handy at

woodwork but he was too shy to come down here.

“It means more to the people of the RSA than it does for our family to keep it on a shelf or in a drawer.”

Harry has played an integral part in the war memorabilia collection at the RSA and president John Forrest says they are looking to give the room a spruce up before Anzac Day on April 25.

“There is a lot more stuff still to come in so hopefully we will look to have it looking really good,” he says.

Multi-million dollar development begins

By Adam Poulopoulos Discussions are continuing on a proposed multi-million dollar upgrade to turn Lansdowne Park into a new Marlborough sporting hub.

The upgrade, which will cost $4.8 million over the next five-toten years, has already begun. One all weather softball diamond and two grass diamonds are being laid behind the stopbank, as the sport prepares to relocate from A&P Park for next season.

Other developments include changing the main field from a soil to a sand base, an athletics track with artificial turf inside it, a multi-purpose building containing changing sheds, office space and a commercial gym, and two new parking blocks with 167 parking spots.

“It’s really exciting for the future of sport in Marlborough.

“It’s really about the collaborative approach, shared facilities, reducing their costs and creating that vibrancy, making Lansdowne Park an exciting place to be.”

She says the plan will help resolve clashes with other facilities in the region. With softball moving from A&P Park, it will relieve their clashes with football and other events. That would allow A&P Park to be more devoted to football, which would reduce the football/cricket crossover at Oliver Park.

Rain brings potential relief

By Jacob Page The wet weather means water restrictions are finally easing.

Council’s operations and maintenance engineer Stephen Rooney says by the end of this week Picton’s watering restrictions may be lifted.

Friday night’s rain was centred on the Lower Richmond Range, Pelorus area with 15 to 35mm falling.

Sunday’s rain was of the same amount and was centred on the Wairau region.

Both periods added to the wet weather the region received mid-

week.

At the Barnes Dam, water is finally flowing over the weir and the water in the dam is looking much cleaner with less algae visible.

“We will be running the treatment plant this week to determine the quality of water after treatment, particularly assessing any taste and odour issues. If all is well we can begin to divert this water into the Picton network later this week.”

In Havelock, the salinity in the water supply is dropping and is now at its lowest since mid-March.

“If that trend continues over the

next few days we will be able to lift water restrictions at Havelock.”

After rain in the last ten days, the salinity level has started to drop and is now at the lowest point since mid-March. .

On Friday, council located a large water leak at the corner of Mahakipawa and SH6 but Rooney says that has now been repaired and has helped bring down the amount of water being used.

After the rain which has fallen since Friday, a good flow of fresh water in the Wairau River is expected for the next 24 hours.

“There was somewhere between 40 and 50mm in the Wairau’s upper catchment and that should create a good fresh amount in the river for another day or so.”

“Renwick’s water restrictions will be reviewed once this fresh has passed and we know what impact there has been to the well levels.”

In the meantime, the Renwick wells are meeting demand adequately although there is an added complication in managing supply when the rivers are running dirty, he says.

TASMAN RUGBY UNION SEES SURPLUS The Tasman Rugby Union announced an operating surplus of $457,490 at their annual general meeting in Blenheim on Monday.

It is their fifth profit in the past six years and was largely due to the Tasman Makos’ run to the ITM Cup premiership final in 2014.

Pelorus area to benefit from grant Pelorus Area Health Trust was one of the 20 successful applicants that benefited from the Churchill Private Hospital Trust’s 20-year anniversary grants of $1000.

This grant has enabled the PAHT to expand its Medical Aid project for the benefit of the Pelorus residents.

The Trust has purchased two fourwheel walking frames and a quad walking stick.

PAHT has a number of Medical Aids which are kept at their shop the Treasure Chest in Havelock and are available for use by the Pelorus residents at no cost for up to six weeks.

Any equipment requiring a longer time frame is signed off by the trust

chairperson.

A mobile St John backpack first aid kit has also been purchased by PAHT with the remaining funds from the grant for use in the Nydia Bay Community.

Nydia Bay, accessed by boat to the popular Nydia Bay walk, has also recently been assisted by Pelorus Area Health Trust with a 50 percent cost of a AED Defibrillator.

This vital piece of equipment is located at On the Track Lodge for the local community.

The Rai Valley Emergency Centre has also received $150 from PAHT with grant funds to aid in any upgrades they require.

I am fascinated as to how decisions such as ‘the colour of the year’ evolve.

Citizenship ceremony The Halton family, Amber, 12, Stephen and Hazel, were among 25 to receive New Zealand citizenship at the Marlborough District Council chambers on Friday afternoon.

The family moved to Marlborough from north Yorkshire in England six years ago.

“It’s another step really It hasn’t really sunk in yet,” Stephen says.

“It’s our country now – it feels more permanent.”

Stephen is a wood artist, while Hazel is a teacher at Rapaura School.

Omaka well done Give-em a break Dear Ed, I’m not hugely into planes but the Omaka Air Show was really top class last weekend.

A great atmosphere for family and friends, really good displays and a commentary team explaining what you were seeing.

There was also plenty of food stalls and the field marshalls were helpful if you had any questions.

What a gem Marlborough has with this event every two years.

Yes, it’s a shame some businesses have to be closed over Easter while large crowds come to Marlborough but let’s just enjoy the fact that the province has something that is genuinely world class.

Ruth Cederman Blenheim Seeing as I’m in my 90s it means whatever money I have I’m very thankful for.

Dear Ed, I was driving behind a grape truck two weeks ago and witnessed the truck driver having to hit the brakes to avoid colliding with an idiot tradesman who was on his cellphone and not even looking for oncoming traffic at the Grove Road and Nelson Street roundabout.

There was naturally a little bit of grape spillage on the road, not a lot, but a damn sight less than what there could have been if the truck driver had have kept going.

After seeing this I really felt bad for the truckies who are doing their bit to drive carefully and safely.

As for the muppets who are driving and talking on their cellphones.... for god sake put the bloody thing down and concentrate on driving before you hurt someone.

Fuel pump price gouging Dear Ed, In the middle of March my wife & I did a driving tour from Auckland to Cape Reinga.

Being an ex Blenheim young bloke but now living on the Gold Coast, Aussie, it appears N.Z has the same problems as we have with fuel pump price gouging.

In fact N.Z appears to be far worse on what I experienced filling up my Rental Car. Paihia, Auckland, Kaitaia, 1.92 to 2.00 a ltr.

Imagine my surprise to find a Mobil in Whangarei at 1.56ltr.

I know the refinery is close by, but .44 cents a litre to move fuel two to three hours away max.

Need for speed Eighteen-year-old Blenheim-based race driver Brook Reeve has just clinched the New Zealand Formula First Rookie Championship title.

He spoke with Adam Poulopoulos about his season, learning his craft and his plans for the future.

Born in Hastings, Brook moved to Blenheim when he was three.

Growing up surrounded by classic cars and hotrods, his first experience behind the wheel was in a grass kart, made by father Daryl, in the park behind their house.

He says he knew from an early age that’s what he wanted to do.

“I think I was born with it. As soon as I was able to get into a go kart I started kart racing properly.”

Starting in the cadet class, Brook progressed through the classes at the Marlborough Kart Club.

He attended Witherlea School, Bohally Intermediate and Marlborough Boys’ College, but he says racing was always his primary focus.

“It was kind of good because I’d get days off!

“Every time I changed schools I was not thinking about changing career.”

After numerous titles, travelling became the only way to keep Brook’s skill levels up.

“You can come down to the local track and think you’re really good, but you can head north and be 100 percent off the pace,” Brook says.

Working with a minimal budget, Brook and his crew built their own motors and stayed with friends and family to keep costs down.

In 2013 Brook decided to apply for the SpeedSport Scholarship, a driver development programme founded in partnership by Sabre Motorsport and the now-deceased NZ Speedsport Magazine.

He was the fastest driver on the track, but judges said they wanted him to work on his confidence and skills off the track.

“They wanted to see some more fire in the belly,” Brook says.

“In the second year I thought I’d go

all-out.”

Working as a trades assistant at his father’s engineering business and completing a motorsport course at UCOL in Palmerston North helped develop those skills.

The next year he was awarded the scholarship.

“I was over the moon. My heart was racing,” he says.

“When I was sitting there waiting for the name to be announced I was shaking like crazy.”

He remains the only South Island winner in the scholarship’s 15-year history, and his reward was a fully-funded drive in a Formula First car.

He has not looked back. Racing against experienced drivers over eight New Zealand Formula First Championship meets, he finished on the podium 11 times from 24 races, including his first race win, at the third meet at Pukekohe.

He clinched the rookie title in the penultimate round at Hampton Downs last month, the first scholarship winner to take the rookie title before the last round.

Soon Reeve will head back up north to help the scholarship’s next winner, but the long-term goal is to forge a career in motor racing.

The next level up is Formula Ford, but with the scholarship lapsing Brook and Daryl have begun a fundraising search, with $60,000 required to purchase a Formula Ford car alone.

Brook says his hard work continues from here and uses Nick Cassidy, Shane van Gisbergen and Richie Stanaway, all past scholarship winners, as inspiration.

“You’ve got good drivers, great drivers and then there’s the step above that.

“They’ve got a career out of it. They’re travelling and racing, and living the dream.”

Tribute to Gallipoli Next week will be the last week that the sound of the cornet will ring out the Last Post from the steps of Blenheim’s war memorial at 6pm, as the special 100-year tribute to Marlborough’s fallen servicemen reaches its 100th day.

Blenheim bandsman Denis Teeling has played the notes each night in the brief ceremony at which the names of Marlborough casualties are read aloud.

Numbers have continued to build since the first evening and the ceremonies have brought visitors from Tauranga, Hamilton, Wanganui and Christchurch who have made the trip to hear the names of family members recalled.

Marlborough RSA President John Forrest says there had been some very touching moments.

“There was a woman from Hamilton who was three months old when her father was killed, who travelled down for the ceremony, and the little family reunions that have occurred as various relations have gathered to hear a family member’s name read out,” he says.

The last night will be Friday April 24, the night before Anzac Day, when the names of the last seven servicemen, W to Y, will be read out.

Defence and diplomatic dignitaries in Marlborough for the Anzac Day ceremony will also attend that service.

The two First World War veterans to be recalled on the last evening will be Private Albert Henry Wooster of the NZ Rifle Brigade, from Omaka, who died in France and Sgt Horace William Yaxley of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles, from Kaikoura, who died in Egypt.

Memorial now complete Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk The newly restored war memorial in Renwick is gaining plenty of attention since its completion earlier this month.

The memorial, where the Renwick Anzac Day service is held annually, is a source of pride to the Renwick community but over time cracks had appeared on the name plaques.

There were also a number of service people missing from the list of names, as well as the misspelling of another.

With the 100th Anzac Commemorations approaching, Renwick RSA president Anthony van de Water and vice president Les Barrow wanted to correct the mistakes and missing names and install new plaques.

Les carried out a huge amount of research through Auckland Museum to find the missing names, including that of D. Fogerty who had no mention of his service from the second Boer War. Anthony and Les then approached Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors and spoke with Ken Rooney who heads the monumental

team about providing new memorials and restoration services.

Ken visited the Renwick war memorial before making the most ‘generous offer’ to Anthony and Les, offering to supply, engrave and install three new memorial plaques free of charge.

“We were blown away, Anthony says.

“Knowing how much work went into it, we are so thankful to GT Sowman for their generous contribution which was gratefully received.

“It shows a huge amount of respect to these men who gave their lives.”

According to Ken it was a “pleasure” to be involved.

“Our relationship with the RSA has been strong over the years and as a company, we like to give back to the community.

“For me personally it meant a lot to do this, especially as my father was a returned serviceman,” he says.

The Marlborough SPCA held an Open Day last Saturday, attracting large crowds to its centre. There was everything from apple bobbing and rock painting, through to animal quizzes and market stalls.

Tactix spirited but lose again

By Jacob Page There was no netball miracle as the winless Mainland Tactix were no match for the undefeated West Coast Fever 66-51 at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 on Sunday night.

As Marlburians soaked up the ANZ Championship for the first time, the Tactix were more competitive than their record drubbing against the Southern Steel in the last round.

The hosts trailed by three at the first break and six at halftime but once they fell behind, they never threatened to get back to parity with their more fancied opponent, it wasn’t until late in the third quarter that the Fever’s lead hit double figures for the first time and from there they exerted dominance.

The hosts failed to capitalise on

“I think we put a better performance out there on court, obviously we would have wanted to come away with the win as that would have been more pleasing but there were some really good things out there.”

Blenheim will host more transTasman netball when the Tactix return on May 24 to play the Queensland Firebirds.

The Picton Quilters Group will hold their annual exhibition and mark 20 years of hard work and friendship this weekend at the Port Marlborough Pavilion, Endeavour Park, Picton.

Exhibition convener, Carolyn Pickering and a hearty group of volunteers stationed themselves in The Forum with their car quilt which had become quite the head turner.

“It’s been all around the country – it’s certainly done some kilometers.

“It was originally meant for advertising purposes but

it’s been to other clubs as a talking piece.

The Picton Quilters have always had a community focus, making and sending quilts to Christchurch following the 2011 earthquakes, as well as Seddon following their shake in 2013.

The club currently has 30 members aged from 40 to 77 and while they are based in Picton, members come from all around Marlborough.

They group have also done special quilts for organizations like The Alzheimer’s Society Marlborough.

The annual exhibition was a chance to raise the group’s profile amongst the community and try to attract new members.

Marlborough RSA President John Forrest receives a poppy wreath from Pauline Haines from Waterlea Rest Home who played an integral part in the making of the wreath.

Pauline’s husband was in the air force and the 85-year-old says she wanted to do something to commemerate those Kiwis lost in World War One. Pauline was hopeful of attending an Anzac Day service on April 25.

First XV’s championship Sport inbrief crusade fast approaching

By Adam Poulopoulos Time in the Crusaders setup will be one of the highlights of the Marlborough Boys’ College First XV’s tour this week.

The team is well into pre-season training for the UC Championship, formerly the Press Cup, and are spending the week in Christchurch to train and play as part of a mini-tour.

Coach Gray Cornelius says during that time they will spend two days with Crusaders coaching staff.

The team begun fitness training in December, and pre-season proper began in late January.

Their first UC Championship match is against Roncalli College in Timaru on Anzac Day. In the last two seasons MBC enjoyed success, winning the title in 2013 and losing a tense 25-23 semifinal to Nelson College last year.

Cornelius says this year, they have lost much of that team’s experience, including 2014 captain Zac Harrison-Jones and TC Campbell, last year’s MBC Sportsperson of the Year.

“We’ve got the highest number of Year 11s for a long time. They’re all excited and pretty keen but it’s going to be a steep learning curve.

“It’s going to be sink-or-swim but quite often the young guys surprise us.

“The likes of TC were all young at some stage,

Mako Heem on the move

By Jacob Page Tasman Makos winger Bryce Heem will join Worcester Warriors after just one season in Super Rugby with the Chiefs.

The 26-year-old was an integral part of the Makos’ run to the ITM Cup premiership final last year and scored a try on Chiefs debut earlier in the Super Rugby competition.

Heem says he is looking forward to the move.

“I am really looking forward to

joining Warriors and linking up with my new teammates in England,” he says on the club website.

“I am excited about the prospect of joining a club which is progressing rapidly and I look forward to being a part of the side and playing a role in the long-term success.”

Warriors director of rugby Dean Ryan says he will be a welcomed addition.

“Bryce has demonstrated his

talents in a number of competitions and is now hungry to realise his potential at a club which has significantly changed its direction over the last 18 months.

Mike Mitchell of Mitchell Sports says the interest during and after the Black Caps’ run to the World Cup final was high.

“In the last week there was a flurry of locals heading off to the final. It was cool to see the local support.

“People are still talking about it a good couple of weeks after the final – it’s all good feedback.”

Mitchell says Brendon McCullum’s success led to an increase of Puma bats being sold, while there was also a rise in the amount of general cricket gear sold.

He says some who do not even play the game were buying specialist cricket gear.

“There were a couple of guys who weren’t players but supporters, who were buying bats to hang on the wall.

“We talk to the customers quite a bit but that was probably one of the most interesting ones – buying bats because of (Martin) Guptill and McCullum.”

Black Caps merchandise ran thin, as apparel supplier Canterbury Clothing Company did not have enough stock to cope with the rush of interest.

RUGBY Central beat Renwick 50-0 on Saturday to extend their unbeaten start to the Tasman Trophy season.

Graham off to Las Vegas

By Adam Poulopoulos Winning selection for the eightstrong New Zealand Mixed Martial Arts team may have only taken a three-minute fight, but for Brayden Graham, preparation began at a very young age.

The 25-year-old will be the New Zealand representative in the featherweight class at the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation World Amateur Championships later this year.

He is the co-owner of Kustom Fitness and is coached in Brazilian jiu-jitsu by Marcelo Lopes.

The tournament will be held in Las Vegas from July 6-11, where Graham will probably fight several opponents.

To get there, he choked out Logan Price at the Road to Vegas MMA Fight Night in Auckland on Saturday.

The fight was over in the first

round, but Graham’s martial arts background goes back much further.

He says his father, Owen, represented New Zealand in karate, and was second in the world at one point.

“I grew up with all the pictures on the wall. Now, I’ve got to try and win the title and be the alpha Graham.

“I’ve always been keen on it.”

The fight was booked four weeks ago, and Graham had to put on a couple of kilos to meet the 61.5kg weigh-in to fight Price in the bantamweight category.

He says he remembers little about the fight.

“You turn into a different person.

“Maybe he thought I was just a grappler because I come from Brazilian jiu-jitsu, but when I hit him it put him off.

“It couldn’t have turned out any

better.”

When Graham won the fight, Lopes excitedly tried to jump into the cage, but was told to use the door by an official.

He says Graham’s win helps set a good example.

“For young guys in Blenheim it’s good to have a New Zealand representative – some people in Auckland don’t even know where Blenheim is.

“For our young guys it’s good to set up to try and achieve big goals in life – think big.”

Garden Marlborough launches scholarship Garden Marlborough has launched a scholarship to support students studying Level 4 Horticulture at the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology.

Funded from the proceeds from the Nelmac Garden Marlborough annual art auction and other fundraising activities, the scholarship will assist students with tuition fees and course materials.

Alongside this, naming rights sponsor Nelmac will work to support the student with work-

experience opportunities in appropriate areas of environmental management, propagation and landscaping.
