Gold sovereign courage By Jacob Page A gold sovereign and a dented carry case are the proud reminders Brenda Carr has of her father Thomas Neal’s efforts at Gallipoli and beyond during World War One. Brenda has possession of one of five gold sovereigns given to her father by the people of Spring Creek when he left New Zealand in 1914 as part of the territorial’s. On the eve of the 100 year anniversary this Saturday, Brenda says the sovereign, and its dented carry case are a tremendous reminder of his bravery. Continued page 2.

Proud man rarely spoke of Gallipoli horror Continued from Page 1. “He carried them around everyone he fought, even when he was injured at Gallipoli and injured again in France near the end of the war. “The case had five sovereigns in it and as you can see it’s quite damaged,” Brenda says. “He always had it on him throughout his six years away.” Thomas was a man who rarely spoke of his time on the battlefield and it wasn’t until he died that his children knew about the sovereigns. “He came home and had five children so we all got a sovereign each.” “Apparently he had most of the

top part of one leg shot away but in those days the men wore long pants. “He never spoke of war – it must have been horrific.” Thomas went away at the age of 23. “He never talked about it and we never asked. “He was a sergeant major and I think he had those traits until the day he died and we did what we were told. “We were living at Robin Hood Bay, farming, and there was always plenty to do, you never looked back. “It was only Anzac Day when Dad would get quiet and Mum did too, that’s when we knew.”

The residents of Spring Creek also gave him a medallion in recognition of his service when he came home, which her father wore on his pocket watch for the remainder of his life. Brenda says her mother also struggled with the war. “She would play the piano at some of the leaving functions and she said it was tough wondering if she would ever see some of them again and of course many of them died. “I would have liked to have known more but I don’t want to know about it at the same time. “I was very proud of my father’s efforts at the war and from what I’ve heard we did a good job.”

Mural timed for Anzac By Adam Poulopoulos Springlands School students have made their own impact as the school prepares to commemorate Anzac Day. About 15 students have put together a mural, which will be shown along with 30 Marlborough RSA crosses at the school’s afternoon service on Friday, April 24. The mural features poppies, made with painted scallop shells, wine bottles and buttons, with the school’s theme for the year, ‘We Will Remember.’ The poppies have been stuck on a piece Springlands School students Lewis Grady and Georgia Morrison with the mural. of wood, painted with blackboard paint. Teacher Jo Grady says the students “It was a bit frustrating at the start, and work on something – it wasn’t a constructed a wooden stand to rest it on. took about a term to construct the mural, trying different paints. Crosses in place

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk. The Renwick branch of the Returned Services Association (RSA) invited Renwick School students to help with the placement of 39 memorial crosses on High Street on Monday. The crosses were placed on the grass verge at the front of the Renwick Community Memorial Hall ahead of Saturday’s Anzac Day service and centenary commemorations. It was a particularly humbling moment for year 8 student Jacson Wilson who put in place his great-great uncle’s cross, Private John Davis Burns of the 20th Infantry Battalion who was killed in action on May 25, 1941 in Crete. A simple ceremony was held with the RSA Ode being given by Renwick RSA president Anthony van de Water followed by a moment of silence.

ATTEMPTED POPPY BUCKET THEFT Blenheim Police are investigating the attempted theft of the Anzac poppy donation bucket on Friday. A volunteer on the RSA poppy stall outside the BNZ Bank in Market St, Blenheim, was approached by two girls and a boy all aged about 12 or 13 years shortly after 1pm. One of the girls attempted to grab the donation bucket but the volunteer was able to wrestle it back off her and the trio ran off. Police are reviewing CCTV footage of the area and would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information that may help identify the offenders. Please call Blenheim Police Ph 5785279. Information can also be given by calling Crimestoppers Ph 0800 555 111.

Renwick School has played a large part in this year’s Anzac services, including making 100 large poppies with metre long stems which will

line High Street on Saturday. Principal Simon Heath says he hoped to have a large number of students marching on the day.

Key opens Health Hub By Jacob Page Prime Minister John Key was on hand to open the Marlborough Community Health Hub on Queen Street. The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (NMDHB) in collaboration with Kimi Hauora Wairau Marlborough Primary Health Organisation hope it will be an integrated hub that brings primary care and public health service providers under one roof. NMDHB chief executive Chris Fleming says the Community Health Hub, located in Blenheim’s central business district, will house 70 staff members working for Marlborough’s Primary Health Organisation (PHO) Kimi Hauora Wairau, Public Health, Child and Adolescent Mental Health and

Prime Minister John Key.

Child Development Services. “This is a significant and positive move to serve the people of Marlborough and we look forward

to seeing the close collaboration between these teams flourish, bringing a more strategic use of health resources to the people. The services have a common goal of improving the health and wellbeing of people living in Marlborough. And this development mirrors a similar initiative between NMDHB and Nelson Bays Primary Health in Richmond,” says Mr Fleming. The building has been leased from the Marlborough District Council and has undergone a refit suitable for serving the health needs of the community. A relaxed Key joked with the crowd at the opening. “Don’t tell Aucklanders the weather is so good here otherwise you’ll have 1.5million of them

wanting to move down.” Key says he hoped the Health Hub would allow people to get critical care without the need to escalate it to Wairau Hospital while allowing health professionals from many areas to work in a stimulating environment and feed off each other’s skills and knowledge. Key had a busy day around Marlborough as he checked progress on the Blenheim Airport redevelopment and discussed Marlborough’s tourism sector. He also purchased a poppy in the Blenheim CBD before speaking to the Marlborough Young Professionals group before boarding a helicopter with Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith to the Heartland Forum at Te Mania Estate.

NEW FERRY ON THE WAY Bluebridge’s newest ferry for its trips across Cook Strait has been renamed the Strait Feronia and has left its port in Sweden bound for its new route between Picton and Wellington. It is likely the ship will be in service from Mid-June. The ship can carry more than 60 trucks, 150 cars and more than 500 passengers. It has a service speed of 18 knots and is likely to be sailed at around 17 knots pending approval.

Water restrictions over for Renwick Renwick’s watering ban was lifted Monday after almost three months of restrictions on garden irrigation. Ma rlborough Distr ict Council’s operations and ma intenance engineer, St ephen Rooney, says the response by Renwick residents coupled with the change in the weather has finally turned things around for the local water supply which depends upon the Wairau Aquifer. “The aquifer has only Stephen Rooney. just begun responding to the higher water level in in the last five days.” Saturday’s good rainfall the Wairau River but the on top of the rain earlier aquifer has gained 500mm

in the week had helped the situation, he said. Water restrictions were imposed on Renwick in late January just before the height of summer when residents were using a record 72 litres a second. Mr Rooney says it’s been a long, dry summer for Renwick people but they had been extremely patient and understanding and the widespread respect for the restrictions had prevented any need to extend the restrictions further. Restrictions on garden irrigation in Havelock and Picton were lifted late last week.

Double the donation

Roofline Marlborough has doubled its donation of roofing from 300m to 600m to help with the Vanuatu rebuild after Cyclone Pam. Branch manager Dave Hix said they had found extra supplies, and with the aid of

Colour Steel, he was happy to donate as much as they could. The extra supplies have been put in the shipping container at The Crossroads outside John’s Kitchen. Supplies like tools are still

welcome as are cash donations, vouchers and certain foods. ABOVE: Roofing supplies are loaded into a container at The Crossroads bound for the rebuild in Vanuatu.

High speed crash A Blenheim man is lucky to be alive after crashing his car at high speed in the town’s main street early Sunday morning. The 23-year-old told Police he had reached speeds up to 180kmh in the 50kmh zone before the crash. He was travelling east along Main St in a residential area when he lost control and hit

a tree about 4.25am. A crash investigator has estimated his speed at about 150kmh just prior to the crash. The driver was uninjured in the crash. He failed a breath alcohol test and has been charged with reckless driving and drink driving. Sergeant Mark Kirkwood of Blenheim Police says

it was pure luck that the young man had not seriously injured himself or another innocent member of the public. “The car was just metres from hitting a house that was occupied at the time,” he says. The 23 year old is due to appear in the Blenheim District Court on May 4 2015.

Havelock history project takes shape A project aimed at collecting Havelock’s historical stories will kick off in Havelock next Wednesday. The project is a collaboration between the Prow website and the Havelock Museum Society. Following the redevelopment of the Havelock Museum, the Havelock Museum Society has plans to collect social history stories for display in its new extension in the Jack Shand building. At the same time, the team from the top of the South history website www.theprow.org.nz was thinking about a pilot scheme to work with local history buffs, so the timing was perfect for a collaboration.

Prow writer, Joy Stephens has been involved in the Prow since it was launched in 2008, researching and writing more than 80 stories from Marlborough and Nelson for the website. She has also run writing workshops for the Prow to encourage members of the public to contribute historical stories. “For me, writing a Prow story basically involves researching information from books, magazines and online resources such as the wonderful Papers Past website. “The story is just part of the process as library staff then add images, links and extensive bibliographies to provide a many layered resource.

“We are developing a digital archive which is used by schools, local historians, the media and people overseas who are doing research. “As I have researched stories, I have become aware of people and groups in the community who are essentially guardians of history and I began to feel that the Prow should capture some of those stories. “The people in Havelock are real community enthusiasts, many with long roots into the area’s history,” Stephens says. Next Wednesday’s workshop which will be held at the community classroom at Havelock School between 10am and noon

will feature Stephens interviewing long time Linkwater resident and local historian, John Collins. “John has lived in Linkwater for more than 50 years. As well as being involved in various activities in the community during this time, he also has a keen interest in the history of the area and has collected material on a range of subjects including the early timber and gold mining industries, Pelorus rugby and the late Sir Paul Reeves, who had roots in the area. “I hope to be able to show workshop participants how to find ‘the gold’ in people’s stories and knowledge and turn it into well-crafted stories which can be recorded and kept for the museum’s use and

for us to share with a world-wide audience via the Prow.” The Prow is supported by the Marlborough District Libraries, and manager Glenn Webster will attend the workshop to show people how to record interviews on equipment loaned by the Aotearoa People’s Network Kaharoa. Two more workshops will follow (dates yet to be set) in which Stephens will work on the Linkwater story with workshops participants and then discuss developing and writing more stories from the area. Anybody who has an interest in Havelock’s history and would like to be involved in the project can phone Ian Cameron 574 2558 or email joy@wordpower.co.nz .

Sam to contest Miss Universe New Zealand

Sam McClung (left) and sister Georgia. Sam is a former local now living in Christchurch, she will contest this year’s Miss Universe NZ.

By Adam Poulopoulos Four years ago Sam McClung made the top 15 of New Zealand’s Next Top Model, and she’s hoping to better that in this year’s Miss Universe New Zealand pageant. The former Marlborough Girls’ College pupil applied for the pageant after a friend encouraged her to enter, and was accepted at the end of last month. Having competed on New Zealand’s Next Top Model as a 16-year-old, she says she is looking forward to this experience, without the pressure of filming. “It’s (Miss Universe) still highly about image but it’s more focused on personality and interests.” Sam was born in Christch-

u rch, a nd move d to Marlborough when she was eight. After four years living in the Marlborough Sounds she moved to Blenheim and attended MGC, before returning to Christchurch to complete her diploma in makeup artistry at the Kristen Stewart School of Make Up. After 18 months in Perth she returned to Christchurch, and is now tutoring at the Kristen Stewart School. Sam was notified of her acceptance by email, and she says it took a while for it to sink in. “I was sort of shocked at first because I’d forgotten I’d entered initially, and then the excitement came 10 minutes later when I went and told everyone.

”My family’s always very supportive of things like that. I almost think they were more excited than me! “They are over-the-moon.” The next step for Sammie is to attend ‘Stiletto Camp,’ in her current home town of Christchurch in the coming weeks. The Christchurch event is one of four regional weekend camps, and incorporates a makeup and grooming workshop, a styling seminar, choreography workshop, interview and more. The participants are notified on June 1 if they have made the competition’s national top 40 and the eventual winner will contest the international pageant at an as-yet unknown location.

Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street. Q: Do you support the SPCA, and what is your favourite animal?

Yes I do support SPCA. I love animals especially turtles. I still have one from when I was born. Speedy is my favourite turtle.

I adopted my kitten Toby from the SPCA. I love kittens because they are really friendly, cuddly and playful.

I have two cats, one of which was adopted from SPCA about two months ago

I enjoyed the SPCA open day and like seeing all the animals. I really like puppies, you can walk them and they are cute and cuddly.

Yes I support the SPCA. My favourite animal would be a monkey. I have seen them at zoos before and they are fun to watch.

Norm Fowke Glass Bypass hopes Dear Ed, Travelling from Picton into Blenheim, I saw the road works just north of Blenheim by the Rowley Crescent side road. “Ha!” I thought. “They’re doing work on the exit take-off for a bypass around Blenheim.” “At last! Some common sense!” I smiled. I drove over the Grove bridge. “This’ll be no longer clogged by trucks with a bypass - they’ll go the bypass” I smiled. “No need for a new bridge.” I drove down Grove Road in Blenheim, behind three trucks slowly negotiating the roundabouts. They turned down Main Street heading south, never stopping, probably frustrated by the gauntlet of roundabouts and town traffic. Then a funny thing happened. I glanced up and saw a pair of flying pigs. Don Coyote

TB - Free New Zealand Dear Ed I see a big advertisement with ‘impossible-to-read” maps of Tb-Free NZ dropping 1080 in the Limestone Creek of the Kaikouras. A schoolboy can understand the Kaikouras by their very nature hold very few possums. Rocks and screes don’t give animals

any food. Elementary my Dear Watson as Sherlock would day. But Tb-Free NZ using farmers and public money will drop 1080 which kills everything and anything which takes it in. Tb-Free NZ knows it will kill native birds and native insects because 1080

was initially an insecticide. Knowingly killing native life is against the law. Will DOC prosecute Tb-Free please? What a waste of farmers and public money and wasteful of native wildlife. Percy Parker

No mussel Dear Ed, I am really amazed the way New Zealanders carry on. I’m writing about the current situation with the mussel industry or lack of. A shortage of mussel could just be a temporary state of affairs. Why close down a working factory, loss

Natasha Knox Blenheim Yes, I love the work that the SPCA does. Cats are my favourite animals, they are incredibly cute, affectionate and independent.

of jobs and another empty factory. I remember when they closed the near new freezing works and now they have to truck animals to Christchurch and back as processed meat. No wonder the traffic has increased over the years. Kathie Warren

Dear Ed I have some sympathy for the Seddon residents, but I strongly object to Blenheim Central Rate payers having to pay for Seddons water upgrade. In 2013/2014 Council carried out a major upgrade of the sewage ponds at Hardings Road at a cost of 17 million dollars. Seddon residents did not contribute to this upgrade. This was paid for by the Blenheim Central rate payers only. It is most unlikely that I will consume water in Seddon, but Seddon residents are more likely to use the toilets in Blenheim when they attend functions or shop in Blenheim. This appears to be a change in council policy, in the past such upgrades have been ring fenced with those living within the ring fence paying for the upgrade. Ross Hamilton

Council needs to push reset Dear Ed, Can’t help thinking that there is $6 million gone into the theatre when the core roles of a local authority are water, roading etc FIRST....not last. Seddon residents should have had this paid out of reserves funds. Our Council needs to push reset on its priorities. Leigh Maddison

A Gallipoli legacy Paul Way has spent a lifetime trying to get to the bottom of his family’s military service. On the eve of Anzac Day, he talks to reporter Jacob Page about his three family members that served at Gallipoli and the impact it had on future generations. A century ago, Paul Way’s grandfather Robert O’Sullivan and two great uncles Patrick and Timothy made land at “Hell on Earth”, better known as Gallipoli. Robert and Timothy were both seriously injured, while Patrick was killed but that’s only half the story. “I’m 78-years-old and I’ve wondered all my life why no one has told our story,” Paul says as he pours over photos and discharge certificates from his family. Three generations all signed up for combat, motivated by the memory of Patrick’s ultimate sacrifice. The O’Sullivan family started in Picton in 1885, by Paul’s admission the whole family were tough “fighters by nature” and loved a drink. “My Grandpa had four sons – two went to World War Two, the next went to Korea and the next went to J-Force. “Then my generation came along and my younger brother served in Malaya and I trained as an EMT and then went into the merchant navy so I escaped active service.” Paul himself battled alcoholism until 1972. Paul says neither his grandfather Robert nor great uncle Timothy spoke much about their experiences unless they were drinking. “Grandpa didn’t say a lot when he came home…They sat in silence him and Tim. “They could sit for hours and never talk, just sit outside and smoke in the sun in each other’s company. “Sometimes the drink would make them

open up. “The horror was after Paddy had been killed they had a lull in the fighting, my Grandpa went out with a group of guys to pick up the dead and wounded and he found his younger brother, Tim, with his guts blown out and he didn’t even know Tim had gone over.” “He managed to get back to safety but he never knew he was over there until then but he got Tim back to safety and it took a couple of years to get him to recover from his injuries. Robert was discharged in 1916 after being injured while Tim was discharged after

recovering in 1919. “Robert was 25, Patrick 32 and Tim was 19 when they went over. “The family history isn’t pretty but I still have pride in it. “When O’Sullivan’s drank there would be plenty of fights… When there was no one else to fight we’d fight each other.” While Robert struggled to come to terms with what he saw in Gallipoli, with his sons set to fight in World War Two, he also signed up to fight as a reserve at the age of 50. “Both Grandpa and Tim agreed, when they were drinking, that it was a hell, a living hell in Gallipoli.

“It was just carnage but they would break down often. “The guys who came back from the Second World War weren’t any better.” Paul says he is often overcome with emotion on Anzac Day, and while he was taught as a youngster it was a sign of weakness to show it, these days, he just lets the tears flow. “Our mother used to say that we would rather choke than ask for help, but it’s different now.” He hoped the research would help his grandchildren and great grandchildren to keep the memory of the family servicemen alive for many years to come.

Mrs Brown’s boys Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk In 1996 Phil Brown arrived in Blenheim with his family with the goal of setting up a used car dealership. He began with a simple set up, 10 cars and just himself delivering what was to become a well known and trusted service in Marlborough. Nineteen years later Phil is still going to work with a smile on his face, enjoying everyday as if it was his first. The only difference now is that Phil has been joined by his son Matt. Matt, a graphic designer by trade jumped at the chance to join his father in the family business 10 months ago, saying he has always had an interest in learning the industry. Taking on the same philosophy as his father, Matt offers the same friendly service that has become the hallmark of what Phil Brown Motors is about. “It’s been really great working with dad and watching

how he interacts with our customers. “It has shown me that in a small town like Blenheim, it’s more about service than it is about sales,” Matt says. With the strong presence of the internet Phil Brown Motors now takes its service nationwide, enabling customers to view and purchase used cars from home or out of the region. “It’s been a great selling tool and a way for me to source cars for locals,” Phil says. With 40 years of car sales experience Phil has a great selection of used cars as well as good contacts throughout New Zealand. Phil Brown Motors is also the only independent authorised MTS dealer in Marlborough. This keeps the business up to standard and offers customers a mediation line if they are not satisfied. Call in and see Phil and Matt, have a chat and see what they can do for you.

EDUCATION Garin has big heart Garin College has, yet again, proved to be a school of choice in the ‘Top of the South’. Why is this? What are the hallmarks of a college that has excelled in NCEA, the Arts, Cultural and sporting endeavours? The only South Island Catholic Secondary School north of Christchurch, mirrors values of Father Garin who opened schools and orphanages in the local area to help people aspire to reach fulfillment in their lives. This legacy drives the Garin College Community towards excellence in all areas of school life. One key factor to this success is that staff are selected, not just as superior classroom practioners, but also as individuals who have lived interesting and varied lives with histories that can inspire and motivate students. From writers for BBCTV to per-

forming artists and respected sportspeople, staff at Garin College ‘walk the talk’ as they encourage, motivate and support students to be the best they can be. Small class sizes, innovative learning methods – including laptops as main learning tools in class - and a commitment to innovation, review and development set the scene for the remarkable academic record achieved in 2014.

The off-site hostels offer comfortable, secure and caring family environments for up to 56 young people and contribute to the college’s success. If Garin sounds like the learning environment for your child, visit the website and contact the Head Teacher John Boyce or the Hostel Manager Robert Booth to arrange a tour. Places exist for both Catholic and non-Catholic students.

Garin College Small School, Big Heart Garin College is a co-educational Catholic College with boarding facilities for boys and girls based in Richmond, Nelson. Our modern facilities and extensive grounds back onto Saxton Field, Tasman’s premier sporting grounds. We have a number of places for non-Catholic students.

Why choose Garin College • Small community based Catholic College • Modern facilities in beautiful grounds • A safe and caring environment • Family style hostel • Fantastic results for all students, NCEA, Rock Quest, Stage Challenge, Sports, Outdoor adventure and more Our off-site boarding hostels provide a welcoming family environment for students away from home and our boarders achieve well above the national average at all levels of NCEA. Originally from Blenheim, Rangi Ruru Girls’ School Head girl in 2015 is Jess Wood who says when she thought about what she wanted to bring to the role this year, she decided it was to “keep feeding the fire of fun”. “I’m a strong believer in fun and good humour which is reflected in our theme for the year, which is FLOB - Fun, Laughter, Opportunities and Belonging.” Being from out of town, all of those things were even more important to Jess as she adapted to a different school environment and a different city. “I left Blenheim and moved into the Rangi boarding house in Year 9. I adapted to my new home greatly helped along by fun and laughter,” she says. A “Fireside Chat” is being held in Blenheim on Friday 22 May, 5.30pm – 7.00pm, hosted by Marty Wilson and Sue Hurd at Parsonage Chambers. Rangi Ruru Principal, Julie Moor, will talk about person-

PRIDE in Excellence

Year 13 students have the privilege of living in the Levels building. Photo provided

Pride in excellence At Nelson College for Girls we take great PRIDE in all that we do. We offer high quality, affordable education for young women in a very dynamic and supportive environment. Our Boarding Hostel, Clarice Johnstone House, offers high quality accommodation for up to 150 students, from New Zealand and overseas. For many of our boarders, there are significant opportunities for them to be involved in sporting and cultural activities that would not otherwise be available to them. Our Year 9 – 12 students live in Clarice Johnstone House where they enjoy considerable facilities for study and recreation. Our Year 13 students have the privilege of living in the Levels building. This very modern accommodation, opened in 2011, provides them with a more independent living experience, while still ensuring our most senior students play a pivotal role in creating the family atmosphere of the boarding

community. Our boarders enjoy academic success, make lifelong friendships and enjoy strong connections within the school and its community. They take pride in taking part in activities such as sporting clubs, choirs, jazz bands and drama productions. This is demonstrated strongly by our NCEA and Scholarship results for 2014. For example over 90% of our year 11 and year 12 students were awarded a National Certifcate. At the end of 2014, in the Scholarship examinations, a total of 18 Scholarships were gained by our students. Our boarders are well represented in these statistics. Enrolments are now being accepted for 2015. Join our happy family. Winter Warmth 2015 How will you warm your family? Blenheim Chimney Cleaning • Chimney & Solid Fuel Heaters • Log Fires • Open Fires • Pellet fires • Fire Repairs, Spares + Service

Doug Powell

Heat pumps are a very energy efficient form of heating and typically produce at least 300% more heating per dollar than a standard plug-in heater. They can quickly bring a room up to temperature, and are controlled by a thermostat and timer. They are usually sized to heat single rooms, but ducted units are also available. Modern enclosed wood burners (wood or pellet) are among the most efficient heat sources available, especially if you have access to free or cheap firewood. Correctly operated units burn very cleanly, can produce significant amounts of heat, and are virtually carbon-neutral. Enclosed wood burners are most suited to

large rooms or open-plan areas and when coupled with a heat-transfer unit can provide whole-house heating. If you enjoy the cosiness of a fire, want to ensure you have a heat source if the grid fails, and also have the option to heat your hot water with a wet back, then a wood burner is

a great idea. Radiant heaters give a more even, lower temperature heat and are suitable where you want to feel instant heat without waiting until the air in the room has warmed up. They are suitable for taking the chill off bedrooms or in large rooms where you only need the heat in one area. Heat transfer systems move air from a warm room to a colder room, via ducts and a fan in the ceiling or attic space – typically from a living area to the bedrooms or hallway. heat transfer system if you consistently have excess heat in one space. For example, woodburners can give off intense heat – which can be efficiently moved to warm up a hallway or bedroom.

Sun smart solar energy When you consider the rising power prices and the financial impact that has, why wouldn’t you consider solar energy? Lucky for Marlborough, Blenheim is home to one of the country’s specialist solar energy companies - Solar Synergy. How it works? It’s simple. Solar Synergy is one of New Zealand’s specialist importers, suppliers and installers of photo voltaic (PV) solar panels which are generally mounted on a roof to produce electricity. The light from the sun is absorbed by

semi conductors in the panels which excite the electrons and in turn, produces an amount of ‘direct current’ which is then converted into alternating current through an inverter for use in your home or business. This is a great investment, particularly for people who are thinking about sustainable energy options. Contact Solar Synergy today for more information or a free, no obligation quote and discover why Solar Synergy is right for you.

Dry winter air leeches moisture, leaving your skin as dry and cracked as a salt flat and your sinuses as parched as the Sahara in summer. Here are a few tips to help you combat dry indoor air. • Use a humidifier. Running a humidifier in your home will add moisture to dry, heated air. Don’t crank up the humidifier higher than that, though, or you could develop other problems. Make sure to keep your humidifier clean so that it doesn’t send dust and germs spewing

into your house. • Seal your home. Insulate your home so you don’t have to turn up the heat. Close any air leaks in doors, windows and crawl spaces. • Hydrate often. Keep your skin and mouth moist by drinking water throughout the day. Don’t like water? Tea and juice are also good ways to rehydrate. • Shorten your showers. Long, hot showers might feel great on frigid winter mornings, but the heat and steam can really dry out your skin.

Stroke club celebrates milestone

Margaret Wilson and Kathie Warren with one of the blankets being sent overseas.

T h e M a rlb o r o u g h Stroke Club celebrated 30 years in existence with a function at the old Marlborough Club on Saturday afternoon. Several long-serving members were given awards at the luncheon. Pete Carpenter and Kay Ayson were awarded service awards from the National Stroke Foundation of New Zealand, while 15 members received awards from the Marlborough Stroke Club. Blenheim Stroke Club was formed in 1985, and in 2006 the name was changed to Marlborough Stroke Club. More photos on page 18.

Those who received awards from the Marlborough Stroke Club include back: Barbara Taylor, Peter Peterson, Barbara Murrin, Barbara Carpenter, Helen Winstanley and front: Margret Saul, Phyllis Ham, Noeline Barker, Elisabeth Elliffe and Margaret Gilbert. Elsa Cresswell, Nancy McDonald, Ann McQuarrie and Jean and Dennis Bateman were also awarded, but were absent for the ceremony. Photo supplied.

Knitting operation Twenty years continues for quilters By Adam Poulopoulos Many local participants involved in knitting initiative Operation Cover Up met to spin a few yarns, and maybe even have a chat, on Friday. Operation Cover Up sees participants knitting supplies to send to Eastern Europe in time for the Northern Hemisphere winter. It is the 15th year the programme has been running.

Marlborough’s contribution will be on display at St Christopher’s Church on Weld Street on July 10 and 11, before being sent away. Operation Cover Up’s Marlborough coordinator Ruth Buckley organised the gathering to thank volunteers for their hard work, and to supply them with more wool. More photos on page 18.

By Adam Poulopoulos Picton quilters celebrated two decades in existence with an exhibition over the weekend. The exhibition, held at the Port Marlborough Pavilion at Endeavour Park, showcased quilts made both locally and nationally. The club has grown significantly form its early days, with the number of club members currently at 30, up from six at the beginning. The club often sew quilts for the community. Their first quilt was for Ronald McDonald House, and they have recently sent 20 quilts to the relief effort in Vanuatu following Cyclone Betty Grenfell and Jacqui Foster standing alongside an Anzac quilt displayed at the Picton Quilters' 20th anniversary exhibition. Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk This year is an exciting one for Blenheim Ear Health as they celebrate 10 years caring for ears in Marlborough. This specialist service was new to Blenheim in 2005 when owner Mary Tolan first opened her clinic in Francis St. At the time Mary who is a registered nurse felt it was important to introduce herself and her service to all the General Practitioners. “Of course they knew about this method of ear wax removal but I needed to show them so they could trust the service” she says. In those early years she began working one day a week and as her client base increased so did her clinic hours. Now Ear Health operates five days a week,

and employs an additional nurse, Debbie Dalzell. Mary and Debbie also take their equipment to all the Rest Homes on a regular basis to provide clinics for those less mobile. To celebrate the anniversary of 10 years in Marlborough Mary is very excited about the opening of a new clinic in Picton. This clinic is set to open on May 14 and is available to all new and existing clients of Ear Health. Initially it will operate from the Seaview Rest Home in Seaview Crescent Picton. “The hours the clinic will operate will increase as demand grows, and all the appointments can still be made through the Blenheim clinic,” Mary says.

When to seek treatment If you have been experiencing the following you may need your ears cleaned. • Itchy ears • Weepy canals • Hearing loss or hearing clicking noises • People who wear hearing aids are also encouraged to have their ears cleaned regularly.

Because the aids sit in the ear they often push the wax back into the canal. • This is also the case for people who wear ear plugs at night or in the workforce. If any of these scenarios relate to you, contact Blenheim’s Ear Health today to make an appointment with Mary and Debbie.

Improve the health of your ears Blenheim’s Ear Health clinic is one of over 60 throughout New Zealand, providing its specialist services to all ages, and it’s safe for children through to the elderly. Ear Health uses modern technology with a very powerful microscope which allows Mary and Debbie to easily view the smallest of ear canals. Their micro-suction technique is the

safest method to remove ear wax and foreign objects from the ear canal. Their aim is to provide a safe and pleasant experience for all their clients. Both Mary and Debbie are registered nurses, specialising in ear care and conditions, and have been specifically trained for this particular skill. Sanford’s Havelock plant to be busier By Jacob Page The closure of Sanford’s Christchurch mussel processing facility, on Monday is likely to mean more work for its Havelock plant. T h e H ave l o c k p l a n t is close to the company’s mussel farms in the Marlborough Sounds. More than 230 jobs were lost with the decision with all workers being offered a minimum of eight weeks total pay.

Sanford will be combining its South Island mussel volumes at the Havelock site, the company says in a statement on its website. “The final decision to close has been a difficult one due to the number of staff impacted, however given the outlook of reduced Greenshell mussel crop supply in the short to medium term, the Company needs one South Island location working efficiently at capacity, rather than

two impacted by uncertain supply,” says chief executive Volker Kuntzsch. “This will eliminate the strong likelihood of intermittent processing interruptions, unpredictable shift patterns and two sub optimal manufacturing environments, which have been caused by spat shortages limiting crop supply. These supply conditions are expected to continue for the next two to three years.

Sacred Day of Anzac, Of memories ...forever dear Trysting place of loving hearts Of yesterdays ...drawn near; Of long remembered faces Dimly thro the Veil of Time; Voices in the far-off distance, Cherished memories sublime Hallowed soil of Anzac, Bridgehead of valor, unsurpassed, May the plots wherein they lie Be ever spared from war’s red blast! May the sacrifice they made, Outlast the tears of bitterness The Sacred Flame of Anzac, light The future’s pathway down the years! Roll on, Ye drums of memory! Blow ,Ye bugles blow! The pause if Ye would hear them Answer from the long ago! “We are the Sons of Anzac, Who died in Freedom’s name We sought our fame not glory In the playing of the game Nor did we vision monuments To glorify our memory; We died ...that you might live In a world forever free! From out the past we send to you A challenge and a call Build a Brotherhood of Nations A better world for all.”

Kennard set to pilot world championships By Jacob Page Blenheim's John Kennard will be looking to pilot Kiwi rally ace Hayden Paddon to some consistent speed in the World Rally Championship's (WRC) Rally of Argentina this weekend. It has been four years since the duo has competed on the roads of Argentina but they were looking forward to the challenge. “Argentina is going to be a very rough rally this year,” says Paddon from his base in Frankfurt, Germany. “There has been a lot of rain

and road damage in the past few weeks. “So the objective is to set a consistent pace and try and avoid problems. If we can do that, then we hope we can finish well within the top eight. “We were here once before four years ago and now, none of the stages are the same. “But any experience is good and we will draw on that as much as we can.” Kennard says their pre-event reconnaissance will include writ-

ing all pace notes from scratch. “We only had one real stage of Argentina notes from 2011 and with our system having changed a bit since then, we have decided to write everything from scratch. “This means my pre-Argentina work is the usual familiarisation with timings, travel and schedules. “However, as I only have one week at home between now and early July, with four rallies – three WRC plus Otago – and two tests in that time, I've made sure to take some time to prepare

notes for future events plus schedules, travel and on-event commitment for these events.” Paddon says the weather is expected to be a little warmer than usual, as the rally is being run a month earlier than its usual calendar slot. “Some rain is normal in Argentina, which helps keeps the dust down. “Once we're through the challenges of Argentina we're back to Europe and more familiar events, so we have greater expectations in terms of results for those.”

Nero lofts Football season shoots into action win again B l e n h e i m ’s y o u n g s t e r s strapped on the boots for the first time this season as junior

Bad weather early Saturday morning prompted a postponement of the Blenheim racing pigeon clubs race from Cheviot until Sunday. This resulted in perfect conditions for the 93 birds liberated at 11am. Nero Lofts of Seddon had another very good win with their chequer hen # 98 having a nine minute break on the rest of the competitors which over the shorter 150 km distance is a considerable margin. Second and third positions to husband and wife team of Donald and Shirley Morrison of Spring Creek where their first birds were only separated by 40 seconds to their individual lofts.
