Major support for theatre

By Jacob Page Some major Marlborough identities have come out in support of the new ASB Theatre as the project enters a new phase. Former Blenheim and Marlborough mayor Leo McKendry, accountant Mark Peters and Marlborough Girls’ College drama teacher Denise Moran have all backed the new theatre as fundraising efforts continue. Leo says Marlborough will be “the envy of many small towns” once the $22 million ASB

Theatre is opened in February. Leo says while detractors only focus their attention on the building cost, the benefits for the town long term are limitless. “We will be the envy of many small towns with this facility,” Leo says. “I really admire those close to the project who have spent so much time in making the vision come to life.”

Theatre will be asset for generations to come Continued from page 1 Leo says he regularly goes to shows in the main centres and believes the new theatre will be a financial win for theatre goers and the region. “There is no doubt that major shows will only come to venues with a certain amount of seats and this new theatre will cater for that. “The fact we’ll have top class shows coming here are going to make the experience cheaper for locals than if they had to get to Christchurch, Wellington or Auckland. He says the new theatre; Clubs of Marlborough and the Convention

Centre should work together. “You have three venues there that should feed off each other.” Blenheim accountant Mark Peters who has been a director of the Highlanders Super Rugby franchise since 2011 and who was involved in the Dunedin covered stadium debate, says people need to see it as something that will benefit Marlborough for many generations. “Yes, it’s costing a lot to build but the theatre will draw shows and events for years, so $22 million in 2015 is chicken feed compared to what it would be in 2050. Peters says the current theatre “just

doesn’t cut it”. “I know people think it could become a white elephant but people said the same thing about (Forsyth Barr Stadium) in Dunedin and that’s the best thing that happened to the city and after five years it’s starting to show signs that it will pay its way eventually.” Mark says Blenheim’s CBD and surrounding businesses will continue to benefit from the theatre and its facilities for many years to come. Marlborough Girls’ drama teacher Denise Moran believes the theatre will be an asset in drawing young people to the performing arts as well

as giving them opportunities to learn the other aspects of theatre life that could see them turn it into a career. “I’m sure it will give our students a lot of confidence to put on a combined college’s production there.” Denise says the theatre continued to work with them so it was affordable to operate the production from the new building. Denise says that was why the production had signed on with Robin Sutherland’s Cavalcade season pass for next year’s offering of Hairspray. “We think Cavalcade is a great idea because it’s keeping costs down for everyone involved.”

Hash browns and health advice all in one By Jacob Page It’s not often a breakfast of bacon, eggs and hash browns comes with a health advice Harvest Life Church are spearheading an effort to get at least 200 men to a men’s health breakfast called ‘Under The Bonnet’ at 8am, September 12 at the Elim Centre. Harvest Life senior pastor Denis Humphreys and Caltex mechanic Grant Stubbs are organising it along with Dr Scott Cameron of the Wairau Community Clinic. Senior pastor Denis Humphries says men need to realise their health matters. “Men don’t go to doctors and if they do it’s often too late.” “After the breakfast we’ll get the guys in the auditorium and do some group exercises and then we’re going to have a vehicle up

on the stage and Grant will do a health check on it and then he’s going to call a doctor who is going to go through men’s health. “It’s R16 because the doctor wants to talk in a very direct level but it’s going to be a fun morning.” Denis says he knows many former rugby teammates who refused to get the medical treatment they needed at the time and they were paying the price now. “It’s the ‘she’ll be right attitude’, a lot of the guys I played rugby with that I look at now and you can see they are in pain from things they used to do when they were younger. “There will also be a question and answer session which will be anonymous.” The duo was confident it would allow people to feel comfortable

The golden country life a delight By Laura Shipley Robin Robilliard is bringing her book on a life in farming to Marlborough next month in the hope her story will educate others. Robin and her husband Garry started a farm in 1957 in Takaka on a piece of land that caused previous owners to go bankrupt. She shares her experiences on the farm and what it was like to live with little money in a profession that neither she nor her husband knew anything about. Robin grew up in Hawkes Bay surrounded by sheep farming stations. Her father had come out from Lifetime farmer Robin Robilliard . England on a scholarship to work in farming and her mother grew expected to work in his family’s up on a back country station. accountancy firm. Robin met Garry when she When they bought the farm they was studying nursing and he was had three children and not much

money. Their primitive living conditions included no indoor plumbing. Robin found a job, writing about her struggles on the farm and raising a family on a low income, for the Auckland Weekly. She took photographs of her children and was asked to write stories to go with them for school readers. She also wrote social studies books for an education publisher. Robin went on to travel yearly to learn and write about politics, culture and religion in foreign countries. Living in such a remote part of the country and knowing the importance of a good education, Robin came to terms with the fact that she would need to send her children to boarding school.

A Picton pub will be closed for three days this week after it was caught selling alcohol to minors The Irish Picton will have its onlicence suspended between 10am on Wednesday and 10am on Saturday The decision was handed down by the Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority following an application from Blenheim police’s Senior Sergeant Peter Payne.

She returned to nursing and with the help of scholarships she managed to pay the school fees. Her children have now gone to University, and one has started his own farm in Canterbury. More than 50 years on and Robin and Garry are still living on the farm. They have sold two thirds for a subdivision, using the money to build a new house and help their son start his own farm. Robin will be talking about her book on: September 7 Blenheim Rotary Club at 6pm September 8 Blenheim South Rotary Club at 6pm September 10 Picton Library at 10.30am Women’s RSA Club at 2pm Blenheim Lions Club at 5.30pm.

Sun Business Update

The Lemongrass opens

It’s here! Blenheim’s new Asian fusion restaurant The Lemongrass has opened for business and promises to delight the senses. Owners Bu-nga K rataitong and Nuttav ut Rodsienglum were thrilled to open their restaurant’s doors yesterday and share with locals their exciting new menu. “This menu is something new to Blenheim and 95 percent of the dishes I haven’t seen in any other restaurants,” Bu-nga says. The Lemongrass’s menu is focused on fresh, lean and green and features some additions many people may not have tried yet. This includes serving dishes with red rice, a more natural form of rice that is packed with more nutrients. There are also several Vietnamese dishes designed by Nuttavut including one his mother taught him - Steamed Fish with Kaffir Lime Leaf and Tamarind Curry. “We love Vietnamese food, it’s very popular in Thailand and we are confident the locals will enjoy it too,” they say. Examples of what will be on offer at The Lemongrass are; • Wok fried chicken with lemongrass and vegetables served on a crispy noodle basket

3

• Sizzling crispy pork belly with whiskey • Spicy hokkien noodles with salmon • Spinach wrap sensation, roll your own spinach leaf with a selection of fresh ingredients Each table will also receive a bowl of fresh herbs and vegetables that can be eaten along with the dishes. “Many people are becoming more health conscious,” Bu-nga explains. The Lemongrass will be open seven days for lunch and dinner for dine in or takeaway.

Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith says it is a scheme well worth being part of. “I would encourage all firsthome buyers in Marlborough to check whether they are eligible, if they haven’t already. “Over the next five years, HomeStart is expected to help 90,000 people achieve their home ownership dream. “HomeStart is proving popular,

The Government has already paid out $7.2 million in grants for 1,195 properties. “The HomeStart package came into effect on 1 April this year, replacing the KiwiSaver First Home Deposit Subsidy. First-home buyers can apply for grants of up to $10,000 for the purchase of an existing home, and grants of up to $20,000 for a new-build.

“KiwiSaver HomeStart is part of the Government’s wider programme to improve housing affordability. This includes freeing up more land faster through eight Housing Accords and 118 Special Housing Areas, as well as measures to constrain building material costs, rein in development contributions, cut compliance costs and invest in improved productivity in the construction sector. New tax measures come into effect in October to ensure people who invest in housing pay their fair share of tax.”

Right here. I’m not going anywhere.

Probably travelling and seeing the world. New places and new cultures.

On a pension probably.

Organic milk Dear Ed, So Fonterra says they badly need organic milk as they have a big market. Please dairy men and ladies don’t get to make huge expensive changes. I don’t think Fonterra is for the poor farmers. When prices went sky high and everything was rosy.

I believe a lot of dairy farmers increased spending on the farm. Now they have to cut back again and again. How could bright New Zealanders’ get rid of all the dairy factories and cheese as well. How many years has it taken for this company to take over NZ dairy companies. We need the milk thank you. Kathie Warren

Lights please Dear Ed, Last Monday morning travelling to Picton just after dawn on a foggy morning, three cars approached in file heading to Blenheim. Wasting time Dear Ed, Watch parliament on Sky if you dare. The practice of government back bench MPs asking questions to ministers so ministers can hold forth on how great they are is annoying. It is as waste of taxpayer money. Parliament costs heaps to run per minute. Anyone know exactly what it is? Thus it was disappointing to see Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith asking a “patsy” question to Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy who then said how great he was. Frank Henry

The game of life Marcello Pinheiro knew little about New Zealand, Marlborough or the wine industry when he arrived from Brazil’s capital of Rio de Janeiro, a decade ago with his now wife, Paula. Five years in Marlborough has opened his eyes to the wine industry while he has brought his love futsal to the young football players of the region. He talks to reporter Jacob Page about life, football in Brazil and his future plans. Chances are, unless you’re a football tragic you have not heard of futsal. An indoor version of the beautiful game played with five players per team and a heavier ball and a smaller indoor court. Marcello Pinheiro has had to learn about the New Zealand wine industry over time but knows all about futsal having grown up in football mad Brazil’s capital city Rio de Janeiro where space is limited but passion for the round ball game overflows onto the streets like cricket in India. Marcello believes futsal can take the credit for helping mould some of the biggest names in football today. Names like Neymar, Christiano Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi all cut their teeth on the indoor version of the game before they made it big and now Marcello is gaining real traction with the game in Marlborough. “The game is very big in Europe and South America but it still growing around the world,” Marcello says. “I grew up playing it because we didn’t have wide open spaces and parks that were available, so you make the most of what you have.” Brazilians only play futsal until the age of 12 then they can play

soccer. “Futsal is what I credit with Brazil’s success because you touch the ball seven times more than you do in football. “The ball doesn’t bounce as much so it forces kids to learn control and passing,” Marcello says. “I wanted to get futsal going in Marlborough five years ago because it’s catching on in Auckland, Wellington, and Nelson.” Marcello has been coaching the same kids for five years as well as running social futsal at Stadium 2000 on a Friday night. He has been training teenage players at Marlborough Boys’ College for two years and has taken them to compete in the national age-group futsal championships. He is also looking to get a game against Nelson on September, now that futsal has linked with Marlborough Football. “It started off as a private thing for me but now working with Marlborough Football allows me to offer the kids a pathway.” He says there are discussions about having a futsal league in the summer. “That’s how you enhance skill level by playing all year round.” Marcello says New Zealand has

to work on increasing its football culture but also needs to change its style of play. “In Brazil the football culture is amazing, you can watch four or five games a week and they televise futsal as well all year round.” Marcello says futsal would allow New Zealanders to use more width in their attack. “New Zealand plays a lot of football in the middle of the field; they need to use the wings more.” Ma rcello ad m its he loves Marlborough and wouldn’t think of living anywhere else.

“We couldn’t be happier here. We bought a house two years ago across from A&P Park so we can hear football being played and we have two kids.” The decision to come to New Zealand came out of the blue. “One night I said to my wife who was my girlfriend at the time if we should go to New Zealand and she said for me to go to bed as I must have been tired. “The next day I asked her if she was coming with me because I was going... We thought it would only be a six month thing to try something

different and here we still are 10 years later. Marcello says his parents were supportive because New Zealand was seen as a safe country. “We only knew one friend here but thought it was worth a chance.” Marcello says the only thing he misses about Rio de Janeiro is the night life. “Rio is a city of six million people so (Marlborough) is a bit quieter. Marcello’s son and daughter were both born in New Zealand but he has two years still to wait before he can become a New Zealand citizen.

Daffodil Day

Friday 28 august 2015

Glenys makes the most of everyday By Celeste Lodewyk It has been two years since Picton woman Glenys Pope was diagnosed with breast cancer. Last year she featured in the Sun to talk about her cancer journey and treatment, and to explain why the Cancer Society had been so valuable to her. This year she is back with an even bigger smile on her face. While she is still hesitant to use the word ‘cured’, she remains positive about life and says despite having some ‘down days’ she keeps focused on her goals. “After having a double mastectomy it does take time to get used to my new body image. “Sometimes it’s all a bit much and all the emotions come back to me. But I just pick myself up and carry on. “Really it’s about accepting that things are a little different now. I don’t just sit and say ‘oh my god’ and get upset now, I try to keep myself upbeat and positive,” she says. Glenys discovered a lump on her left breast while in between mammogram appoint-

ments and acted on her intuition by having it checked. After her operation and six month chemotherapy treatment she now only has to take a daily hormone medication that reduces the risk of breast cancer recurrence. Today she says the people who have supported her throughout her journey are never far from her mind. “The lovely people in oncology are still in the back of my mind, they are never forgotten. “My family and friends who were in this with me... I am grateful to their support, as well as the wonderful ladies at Cancer Society Marlborough who have become like an extended family. “I am forever grateful that they are here for people like myself,” she says. Glenys proudly volunteers for the Cancer Society Marlborough and will be helping out where she can this Daffodil Day. Be generous and make a donation, knowing that your support is helping other people like Glenys in our community.

Daffodils needed Daffodils are in short supply this year, so the Cancer Society Marlborough is calling for members of the community to donate any spare daffodils they have in their gardens or on their properties. Fundraiser Zoe Gray says pickers went out yesterday morning and instead of picking their usual 35 buckets, they only had half a bucket. “We really need some more, so if anyone has spare daffodils we would be so grateful,” she says. Simply phone the Cancer Society Marlborough office on 5794379 to arrange a pick up, or you can drop them in to the bunching centre at the McKendry Car Corner.

Real generosity is doing something nice for someone who will never find out.

Donate on Friday Charlotte is this year’s Daffodil Day bear and is a very special addition to the Cancer Society’s bear collection. Charlotte is the 25th bear in the collection and will be for sale on Daffodil Day as well as at the Cancer Society Marlborough office at The Forum in Blenheim. In addition there will also be Daffodil Day pens, windmills, brooches, key rings and fresh daffodils being sold, with all proceeds staying in Marlborough. At the Forum there will be a number of events being held to celebrate Daffodil Day including live music, the ANZ

Why you need it Magnesium (Mg) may be the most overlooked mineral, when in fact it is an incredibly versatile and important nutrient that many doctors, nutritionists, and researchers believe is the single most important nutrient for human health. It is essential for over 300 different chemical reactions in the body, including maintaining your energy level, helping you relax, and sustaining the health of your heart and blood vessels. Unfortunately, in most of the developed world, magnesium deficiency is probably the most common nutritional deficiency. Because it has so many crucial functions, and because it appears to protect us from serious conditions that are most prevalent in the developed world, magnesium really is one of the ‘miracle minerals’. What is magnesium good for? One of its most common uses is for alleviating constipation; you may recognise it as the active ingredient in well-known over-the-counter laxative medicines. It is also a natural calcium-channel blocker. Many integrative medicine practitioners have used magnesium supplements to help lower blood pressure and maintain healthy blood pressure. While we often hear about the importance of calcium for bones, magnesium is the other key mineral for healthy bones. And because so many people take calcium pills without magnesium, there may actually

be a greater need for magnesium than for calcium in people who are most vulnerable to osteoporosis. Magnesium is probably the most important nutrient for that energy powerhouse, the human heart; it helps the heart muscle itself function better. Magnesium also helps protect blood vessels, which is where most of what we call heart disease actually happens. Magnesium is also a natural blood thinner, much like aspirin, so many doctors and researchers believe that it may help prevent heart attacks and strokes. Perhaps the area where magnesium could have the biggest impact is in the prevention of diabetes. Scientists have proven that magnesium levels are low in people with diabetes, people with higher magnesium levels do not develop diabetes, and that supplementing with magnesium appears to help reverse pre-diabetes. As with all minerals in foods, the mineral has to be present in the soil where the food is grown. The best food sources of magnesium are beans - especially soy, whole grains, including bran, nuts like almonds and brazil nuts and seeds, including flaxseed, sesame, and sunflower. Dry cocoa powder, and dark chocolate are also a great source. Talk to your GP or local pharmacist about magnesium for your health.

New pilot music therapy sound medicine for children It is said that ‘nothing activates the brain so extensively as music’. So it’s no wonder that a new pilot programme through ‘The Creative Arts Centre’ launched earlier this year providing music therapy for vulnerable children is a growing success. The Creative Arts Centre is a non-profit charity which offers group and individual Creative Arts Therapy. The aim of the trust is to support vulnerable children to “grow through the arts”. If focuses on children with a wide range of needs, including those seeking support with physical, psychological, intellectual, developmental, behavioural and social functioning. Behind this initiative is a group of dedicated people, headed by Trust founder Liz McKay, and supported by the Creative Kids Trust Board and Creative Arts Centre team. It started off with Liz’s passion to train as a music therapist. And over the busy years of starting a family and business with her husband Greg, Liz’s passion matured into an understanding,

that to be effective, a community combining all the rich talents of the Creative Art forms needed to be grown around these children and their families. A place where every child was supported through the art form that they love. So when Liz came across a newspaper article featuring Yvonne MacSweeny and her music therapy, she made contact with Yvonne and the first steps began. The Centre has developed since offering it’s pilot programme and is now operating group music therapy sessions led by Yvonne MacSweeny and supported by the Creative Arts Centre team members Jody Hughes and Sandra Sangster. The sessions are centered around goals for Attention and Concentration needs, Managing Anxiety, Speech Development, Movement Development, Social Development, Behavioural Development. Early indications are that as the children’s trust grows with the team and their group members, they are becoming more aware of themselves and others, which supports their growth and the friendships

they are developing at the centre. Now they are excited about taking another step and are in the planning stages of offering a teen anxiety programme through Creative Writing, led by Molly Murphy Wittig, a

registered psychologist. ‘Each new step leads us closer to our long term goal of offering all art forms and ultimately having our very own front door,” she says. For now though, they welcome

anyone with a child that would benefit from being involved in the programmes or anyone interested in supporting the centre to be in touch. For more information contact liz@creativearts.co.nz

Volleyball down to the wire Marlborough Volleyball’s Winter League night saw some tense three-set matches during its sixth round. It was a slow start from Dank Lords and some good team play from Uso Fiafia which gave the latter the first set win of 25-16. Dank Lords got some teamwork together for the second set but Uso held on with some nice spiking from Afa Lauvai for the win 25-19. The third set really came to life with Dank Lord’s Theo Martin-Babin and Toby Hogg leading the chase with some solid court play and nice spikes but the sneaky serving from Tupuaga Siovaeata and huge spikes from Afa Lauvai made the difference to give Uso the hat trick win with a close set score of 25-23. Uso Fiafia continued their double-header week and played Cri Clovers in their second game of the evening. Cri Clovers kept everyone entertained with their unorthodox shots, Greg Stretch using almost every part of his body to keep the ball in play. Uso gained another hat trick for the evening 25-21. Kaiser Faalilo played and captained Uso Fiafia well and was supported by consistent play from Andrew Moli. For Cri Clovers, Stretch and Michelle O’Donnell both had good sets, especially O’Donnell, given the fact she is playing on the men’s height net. She received the ball well and offered some solid shots at the net. Bella’s Team got off to a good start in the beginning of the set against Pure Samoa, Some great serving and hitting by Emma Gardiner proved vital early. Pure Samoa caught back up but Bella’s Team was just able to hold on for the win 25-22. A huge serving run of 13 points from Pure Samoa in set two left the set in their hands. A good fight back from Bella’s Team followed but not enough and the set win went to Pure Samoa 25-13. A very close third set followed with Pure Samoa coming out the victors. Work Hard Play Hard’s, Jack Pope was the difference for his side in their two sets to one victory on the night

NMIT tutors Steve McIntyre and Andy Woolley have come up with a two-faced Mazda to help recruit students for automotive trades and engineering and construction courses.

Two cars, one project with a twist Take two clapped out small cars. Back them up, bumper to bumper. Cut each in half and then weld them together and you have an intriguing project at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology It is a unique project for the automotive trades and engineering and construction students. The eccentric hybrid – with two engines, two gearboxes and two drivers – is the brain-

child of tutors Steve McIntyre and Andy Woolley. Steve says the unusual vehicle is a way of attracting the interest of school leavers in a trade’s career. “If we go to schools to talk about a career and do, say a wheel change exercise it’s all ‘so what’ for the kids. We need something more exciting. “If we can take this car along to school, kids will go,

wow and talk about it to their parents.” That may lead to interest in a career as an automotive or mechanical engineer or in construction. Steve and Andy have fused the two Mazdas together with the enthusiastic involvement of their students. Steve says the car can be driven in each direction and – with sets of wheels facing in opposite directions – is

capable of a few tricks, like driving down the road like a crab. Steve is now planning a V8 chainsaw and says the car should add promotional value for the trades programme and NMIT in general. The final look of the car isn’t certain. If the tutors can find a paint and panel shop that wants to be involved, the dual “Mazdadzam” may look smart.

Kennard and Paddon battle through Rally Germany By Jacob Page Kiwi rally duo Hayden Paddon and Blenheim’s John Kennard have finished ninth at the World Rally Championship’s Rally of Germany. Paddon described his first tarmac event of his 2015 FIA World Rally Championship season as “a trying but educational three days”. The result was solid considering the technical issues the pair experienced on Saturday, the longest day of the rally. Having been the quickest of the four Hyundai drivers during Thursday’s shakedown run, Paddon and Kennard came through Friday’s eight stages to hold eighth place overall in a close-fought top ten. They were encouraged by their pace relative to their Hyundai Motorsport team-mates Dani Sordo and Thierry Neuville – after eight stages they were just over 20 seconds behind Neuville in

fifth place. Both Sordo and Neuville have a lot more experience on tarmac than Paddon and eventually finished this year’s event in fourth and fifth place respectively. Saturday proved unexpectedly challenging as the Kiwi duo contended with a turbo-related technical issue on all nine stages of the event’s longest day. The lack of power was particularly frustrating on the iconic Panzaplatte with its hundreds of junctions and the relative lack of acceleration available to power them away from each junction. Despite losing the best part of a minute and a half, they persevered to complete all nine stages and reach Saturday’s finish in ninth place overall. With the Hyundai i20 WRC back to full power for Sunday’s final four stages, Paddon and Kennard concentrated on gathering as much information as he could about the

the men’s quad, while Blenheim’s Tom Murray will be an integral part of the men’s eight. Karl Manson was part of a crew that impressed at Lucerne at the third world cup where they finished with a silver medal, meaning Olympic qualification should be attained as they chase a spot on the podium Murray and the rest of the crew have steadily improved throughout the season and will look to be the first New Zealand men’s eight to race at an Olympic Games since 1984 Axel Dickinson is a reserve sweep for the regatta The New Zealand Rowing Team topped the medal table at the 2014 World Rowing Championships winning a total of nine medals - six gold (four Olympic boat classes and two International boat classes), two silver and one bronze.

The Marlborough Development football team are through to the semifinals of the Tasman Trophy after a come-from-behind 4-2 win against Nelson Suburbs First XI at A& P Park in Blenheim, on Saturday. Striker Cailan Thompson and captain Lukas Simpson each scored twice for the home team.

Makos march on The Tasman Makos have climbed to the top of the ITM Cup premiership ladder after two rounds thanks to a hard-fought 34-13 bonus point win over Bay of Plenty in Nelson. The Makos struggled early for cohesion but eventually got the better of a determined Steamers outfit that refused to go away. It wasn’t until flanker Pete Samu made a break and ran 60m for a try in the final stages that the Makos earned the four-try bonus point. The Makos play the Manawatu Turbos at Lansdowne Park tomorrow night.

Red Devils slow to start The Tasman Red Devils were too slow to get going against Canterbury Metro in an invitation game at Christchurch’s Rugby Park, eventually succumbing 28-12. The visitors trailed 21-5 at one point and could not battle back despite finding parity on the scoreboard for the latter stages of the match.
