There will be a number of local shearers who will try to do just that at the Woodbourne Tavern’s ‘Woody Speedshear’ event in Renwick on November 6. This will be the fourth time the speedshear will be held, which can see around 30 shearers competing for the top prizes.

Shearers to bleat the competition Continued from page 1 Woodbourne Tavern manager Rowan Ingpen says the event is great entertainment, and he hopes people will come along to watch the action. “The teams event that we begin with is a real show pleaser, but overall it’s quite fascinating to watch the shearers and how fast they are,” he says. In the four-person teams event, which must include a woman, one member begins by eating a dry meringue, the next must drink a pint of beer before proceeding into the sheering. Between the two remaining team members, one must wind over the manual handpiece
while the other shears the sheep. After that event the Seniors category begins which features shearers who are learning or not working fulltime, then on to the Open category with the more experienced. The top three from each category then go into a ‘shearoff’ to determine first, second and third placing. Supplying the sheep for the competition is Waihopai farmer Chris Jones. All sheep are crutched and bellied, so the skill comes down to who can shear the cleanest and fastest, Rowan says. “We will have New Zealand shearing judges who will
inspect the sheep afterwards, so you might be the fastest but if the sheep has nicks and cuts they can be awarded less points. “There’s a real fine art to what these guys are doing, well worth it to watch,” he says. The event kicks off at 7:30pm and winds up around 9:30pm. Cash prizes will be up for grabs for the winning shearers, as well as a Lister Nitro Handpiece valued at $800 sponsored by PGG Wrightson. Mokoia gets national honour By Jacob Page Marlborough Boys’ College pupil Mokoia Pinker has been recognised for his contribution to road safety in Blenheim. The Year 12 student is one of only 37 students from across the country to be selected to the Student Against Dangerous Driving (SADD) national young leaders group. Mokoia says he was approached to take over as the leader of the organisation at MBC and saw it as a great way to give back to the community. “I really enjoyed the leadership role of it and trying to get the message out there about dangerous driving and the impact it can have.” SADD chief executive Anna Braidwood says teenagers play an important
role in keeping the roads safe. “Our national leaders are a very important cohort of teens representing our thousands of members based in hundreds of schools across the country. “They help to shape our student-led road safety programme, provide leadership and support to SADD groups on a local level, and are part of providing a strong youth voice on young driver and passenger safety in their community. “Road crashes are the leading cause of death and permanent injury amongst Kiwi teens, so there really is no issue more pressing for our young people to address. “Mokoia is an example of the significant impact teens can have on pushing for positive change, and in making a National sponsor for SADD is Caltex and Grant Stubbs difference for their communities.” of Main Street Caltex presented Mokoia Pinker with his national leadership certificate.

Hall upgrade in motion
By Celeste Lodewyk In 2012 plans were announced for an upgrade of the Renwick Community Memorial Hall and now the committee is pleased to confirm that these plans have been set in motion. Committee chairman Murray Newman says to kickstart the upgrade they had received a $200,000 grant from the Ministry of Education. This money has been used to “get the ball rolling”, he says. “It’s enabled us to put together a business plan that will take the hall into the future, feasibility studies, building and maintenance reports and permits,” he says. An application for funding for the upgrade was submitted to the Department of Internal Affairs eight weeks ago. Having the funding prior to starting work on the hall has been integral to the committee, Murray says.

“We are adamant that we won’t start until we have the funding. The upgrade won’t be at a cost to the community, rather we will achieve this through funding grants and fundraising events.” While they wait for the result of that application other details can be released, including the artist’s impression of how the hall will look (pictured). The design work has been com-
pleted by Redbox Architecture who have also carried out work for Renwick School in the past. “Once completed we will have a facility that will compliment the Giesen Sports and Events Centre, as both buildings have different functions within the community,” Murray says. On another note, the committee has farewelled long standing secretary and treasurer Helen Miller who
has retired from the committee. Helen was one of the original committee members who raised funds to build the hall. “Helen always had that original passion for the care and well being of the hall, we all wish her the best for the future,” Murray says. Renwick School has taken over the administration and all bookings can be done through Heather Johnson by contacting the school.
Marlborough to be part of adult dental cost-cutting initiative By Jacob Page Two Blenheim dental practices will take part in an initiative to help low income adults look after their teeth. Beattie, Gilchrist and Associates and Durrheim & Associates will help adults with their teeth issues on November 14 through a programme called Smile NZ. The initiative will provide free dental care to low income adults who require but cannot afford treatment. This is part of their commitment to offer free care for up to 1500 low income adults.
The free dental work will take place at 19 practices across ten regions between November 6 and November 14 – a fitting start date considering November 6 is our National Oral Health Day. Southern Cross Health Trust CEO, Terry Moore says the uptake of the initiative in May showed there are a lot of people living with long-term dental problems. “We ran this in May for the first time and quickly ran out of places which shows that a lot of New Zealanders cannot afford basic dental care.”
NZDA CEO David Crum said the Association applauded the dentists who volunteered their time, and welcomed any collaboration which would further provide at-risk people with necessary treatment. “While some DHBs and government agencies offer emergency dental work or help with pain relief, a lot of people don’t meet their DHB’s criteria and are not in the financial position to help themselves. inbrief HMNZS Canterbury to Southern Katipo The New Zealand Defence Force’s (NZDF) sealift and amphibious support ship HMNZS Canterbury as part of NZDF’s largest military exercise, Exercise Southern Katipo 2015 which involves extensive parts of the Marlborough region. Exercise Southern Katipo involves more than 2,000 personnel from nine nations (including New Zealand). HMNZS Canterbury has an extensive range of capabilities including the ability to land personnel, vehicles and cargo by landing craft, helicopter or ramps, as well as conventional port infrastructure.
Steer meets truck A 300kg steer was killed by a log truck after it wandered onto a highway in Marlborough. The accident happened in Wairau Valley in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The driver of the truck was not injured.

Blenheim Ear Health is now fully funded for ACC. This is in addition to being a certified War Pension medical provider, welcome news for many patients. The building where the clinic is held on Francis Street has also undergone a recent makeover and now has a new modern look and fresh atmosphere. “It’s been quite exciting in recent times,” Mary Tolan says. Mary Tolan, owner of Ear Health here in Blenheim together with Debbie Dalzell are both accredited ear nurse specialists and between them have 70 years of experience in nursing, including 14 as ear nurse specialists. As registered nurses their focus is on educating their clients on
how to best care for their ears and managing any ear problems they may experience. “We treat both adults and children for a wide range of ear issues, from ear wax removal and removal of foreign bodies, to the management of ear infections and other ear conditions”. “We have a good relationship with local GP’s and Ear, Nose and Throat specialists, and can liaise with them where necessary,” Mary says. Softball at Lansdowne Park Another milestone in the long-term development of a Lansdowne sports hub was reached with Marlborough Softball opening its summer season this month, playing from the newly created diamond on the northern side of Lansdowne Park. Softball’s new home has been established on the north side of Lansdowne after the stopbank north of the rugby fields and grandstand was excavated and grassed over and the softball dug outs, complete with concrete floor, relocated from softball’s old home at A&P Park. Once softball has trialled this layout, new permanent facilities will be installed. New steps over the stop bank at the east and west ends make easy access from the rugby and touch fields and there’s also a small gravel path from the Central Clubrooms car park to get to the softball area. Temporary car parking will be available on the grass around the Central Club rooms with
space for about 100 cars until a new parking area can be sealed around these club rooms. With many sports codes thinking about their long term future, Council has begun consulting all sports clubs as the next step in planning for the consolidation of sports facilities at Lansdowne Park. It’s the latest achievement for Havelock’s Smart & Connected group and Pelorus Promotions who have worked with Destination Marlborough and the Council to establish the i-SITE. Freedom camping is not that free From boy racer cars that do laps at these locations. Excessive noise in clapped out cars. There’s no activity by police as they even rev past the police station. I had no sleep and had my first day at a new job the next day not good.

Tip fees Another to agree with the tip fee’s !!! They are absolutely over the top. I did a favour for an elderly neighbour, cut an old tree for him an took it on my trailer to the tip, cost me $70. Didn’t have the heart to ask for the money. Where we lived before Marlborough we got two tip vouchers a year for free trailer loads when we paid our rates !! C’mon MDC be a bit public spirited. Completely agree it costs too much. But I think it should be free to dump green waste since the dump composts and sells it!
Too expensive Some weeks back an item in local rag about doctors wanting people to go to practices instead of A & E. Maybe people would if they were treated better not just a number. Paying $60 - $80 for 10 min.

Dogs in car To the person who moans about leaving dogs in car. I take my dogs everywhere with me even to the supermarket I leave all four windows down enough for them to get air and its not like I am going to be in supermarket shopping all day. They are fine. What is it with some people? Its a bit different if you see a dog dying of heat otherwise mind your own bees wax.
Not 24 hours If people actually read the drive through sign correctly, it says 24 hours Fri/Sat. It’s not all week. What can be done about the obesity crisis you ask? How about reducing the hours of fastfood outlets. Obviously if people are complaining about MD’s not being open 24 hours - there is a problem.

Film Fest gets the attention of movie buffs More than 270 people came to the Marlborough Civic Centre for the first ever Top of the South Film Festival on Wednesday night. The crowd was treated to 14 short films by film makers from Marlborough, Nelson and Golden Bay. Five Marlborough film makers were represented by six films on the night

MPI and salmon farmers examine summer fish mortality issue The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is working closely with the country’s salmon farming industry to better understand an issue that has emerged over the past few summers in the Marlborough Sounds. As reported previously, a salmon farm in Waihinau Bay experienced higher than normal fish mortality rates in early 2012 and this has continued in subsequent summers. MPI officials met late last week with industry representatives to outline the situation, share knowledge and discuss next steps. Response manager Chris Rodwell says MPI believes there are a range of factors at play including high water temperatures, water flow, diet and even sea anemone stings. “In addition, new genetic tests developed by our Animal Health Laboratory have revealed the presence of two bacteria not previously detected in New Zealand.” The bacteria – a Rickettsialike organism (strain yet to be defined) and Tenacibaculum maritimum can cause disease in fish but do not affect people. “There are no concerns about food safety associated with this situation,” Dr Rodwell says. “Our focus now is to determine
what, if any, link these bacteria have with the higher summer mortality rates. “MPI is actively managing the situation and is working with salmon farmers around the country to collect information and sample fish to determine if the bacteria exist outside of Marlborough. “This information will help us decide how we continue to manage the situation,” Dr Rodwell says. “We know the bacteria have been present in New Zealand for a number of years. Our new genetic tests enabled us to retest samples from the first mortality event in 2012 and these revealed the bacteria were present then. It is possible it may even naturally occur here.” There have been no reported increased mortality events in wild fish or in farmed salmon outside of the Marlborough Sounds. As a precautionary measure the Marlborough farms put biosecurity controls in place to prevent any spread of the bacteria and MPI is enforcing this. The future welfare of fish is also top of mind for MPI which is the lead agency in animal welfare. “We take animal welfare seriously and are working with the company to plan for the upcoming summer.”

By Jacob Page Abstract artwork need not be confusing to the general public, says Marlborough artist Walter Scott. Walter will have three pieces in the Marlborough Art Society’s exhibition of local abstract and contemporary art work called ‘Inspiration Revealed’ at the Yealands Estate Marlborough Gallery. The exhibition has its preview night on Saturday before being open to the public from November 1 to 22. “It’s impressionist and expressionist kind of work. “People won’t see nice seascapes of the Sounds, this is a different kind of work,” Walter says. Some people do come along and wonder what the heck it is that you’ve painted but if you get them asking a question then it is a start. “You are trying to express a feeling or emotion. “You’re trying to say something and often the piece must interact and connect with people.” Walter dabbles in both pastels and oil painting. He says he likes being out in the environment he’s painting and see it for himself.

“It gives me an added dimension or perception for what I’m painting. “It’s called ‘the seeing eye’.” Walter says the title of an abstract or expressionist piece needs to give people a clue of what has been painted. “If you put something in your title that can be understood then people feel like they can relate to it.
Walter has a piece called ‘Market Street at Midnight’, he hopes from the title, people will see what they want to see in it. Walter is also a skilled photographer and he says he often uses a camera to capture what he sees so he can paint it later. “The thing that first draws me to a painting is how the light touches it.”

Saying goodbye to Jane Last week was both a celebration and a sad ending as I ended my fortnightly sessions with personal coach Jane Butler. We both celebrated the fact that as far as my healthy journey was concerned, I have reached a point where good eating habits and a healthy lifestyle has been established. It was sad however, to say goodbye to Jane as she has been instrumental in keeping me on track and providing endless encouragement. It was Jane who made me realise from the beginning that this was not about losing weight, but instead about creating a lifestyle that supported healthy weightloss which has been the most valuable lesson. I may not have had a dramatic weightloss so far, but I feel so much better on the inside and the weight I am losing I am not putting back on. So moving forward I am finishing this journey on my own now which won’t be difficult as all the changes I have made, cutting added
sugar, regular exercise, reducing gluten and eating regular small meals, these have become ‘normal’ for me. That alone is cause for celebration. To kick years of bad habits to adopt a healthier lifestyle has not been weasy and takes effort to maintain, but I can personally say that it is worth it. Of everything cutting sugar has been the most difficult but the ‘withdrawals’ have subsided and I haven’t looked sideways at a block of chocolate for nearly a month. So the countdown of weeks begins now, it’s not long now until I say ‘I do’. I will keep taking regular measurements and update you all as we go along. Of course with the wedding being on a ‘secret date and location’ I can’t reveal how many weeks, days and hours but what I can say is that all will be revealed with a photograph and announcement in the Sun.

Nix to be nixed? Kicking the Wellington Phoenix out of the A-League would be a hammer blow to football in New Zealand. For me, the Phoenix are like nice ambiance music – they’re on in the background of my sporting life. Rarely do I turn them up or switch the channel to watch a game but I like following how they are going and would happily jump on the bandwagon if they made a decent run to the finals. However, it appeared Football Federation Australia (FFA) is quickly losing patience for the side which really struggles to draw a decent crowd. In a stadium that seats 30,000 plus they’d be lucky to get a third
of that. Add into the fact Australia plays in the stronger Asian confederation while New Zealand languishes in the rather meaningless and weak Oceania zone, and it’s no wonder the Aussies want to wash their hands of a New Zealand franchise in their competition. For those diehard ‘Yellow Fever’ supporters who gladly take off their shirts with 10 minutes to play if the Phoenix are leading a match, the end would be a sad one. New Zealand has been haunted by appallingly bad football franchises like the New Zealand Knights and Football Kingz. The Phoenix have done a lot better than those two Auckland-

based outfits but not that well. They’ve never contended for a title in 10 seasons and have just played spoiler in most seasons. The Phoenix does however offer a pathway for aspiring Kiwi footballers to get noticed. Take the likes of 23-year-old Marco Rojas who burst on to the scene with the Phoenix in 2010, became arguably the best player in the A-League during two seasons with the Melbourne Victory and is now on loan to FC Thun from VfB Stuttgart. Other players like Shane Smeltz and Kosta Barbarouses have all progressed their careers after starts with the Nix. It will be interesting to see how the saga plays out but the current signs are not promising.

The Tasman Makos have 16 players in early New Zealand Super Rugby squads announced this week. With the overall position of sixth place wrapped up, Paddon added: “I am happy with how our weekend has gone overall. We made a good start on the mixed surface on day one and we have certainly shown a good improvement on tarmac compared to this time last year. “We had a decent Sunday and were able to move back into seventh place, from where we just took it easy to bring the car home. “We then, of course, moved into sixth place after Ogier’s incident in the final stage.” The duo will now compete in their final rally of the season, the Rally of Great Britan in Wales.
