TWICE WEEKLY

Brook Reeve’s battle at Taupo Blenheim’s Formula First driver Brook Reeve had no luck in the second round of the national competition in Taupo. After finishing the opening round second overall, a number of minor issues made it a stop-start event. He finished 10th overall and slipped to fifth in the driver’s championship but must have been left scratching his head as to what went wrong. Starting sixth on the grid after qualifying, Reeve moved up to fourth after the opening lap. While he battled for a podium spot for much of the race, he eventually had to settle for fifth after a tense final lap of the opening contest. On the second lap of race two there was minor contact

between the nose of Reeve’s car and the rear tyre of Michael Shepherd’s at the chase, however it was enough to unclip one side of Reeve’s nose cone and leave it teetering on the car. Reeve’s performance was unaffected as he continued to battle for the lead. Reeve, now in second, lost his nose cone at turn 1 on lap 5, however the officials had already decided to impose a mechanical black flag on him when he next crossed the line. Shepherd took the race, ahead of the two most recent SpeedSport Scholarship winners, Brook Reeve and Liam Lawson. It all counted for little though as Reeve was later excluded from the race for “failing to

report to the pits, for the following lap the black and orange flag was shown. The final race saw Reeve again climb his way to the front of the pack.

Misfortune would strike again when he ran into the back of a rapidly slowing Chris Symon on the third lap, again losing his nose cone for the second con-

secutive race. Reeve and Symon then went side by side into turn 2 before Symon ran off the road before the switch to turn 3.

Marine farming ‘crucial’ to economy By Jacob Page A report showing more than one in 20 of Marlborough’s full-time equivalent jobs comes from marine farming in the Sounds has been released as the industry celebrates 40 years since the first marine farming licence was granted. The NZIER report, which was released at a launch event at the Marlborough Convention Centre on Monday night, commissioned by the Marine Farming Association, says MFA’s president Rob Pooley. the industry generates almost six percent of the region’s farms, six mussel and three economic activity and 860 jobs salmon have been consented across marine farming and in the Marlborough Sounds processing, paid at far higher since 2002. than prevailing average wages. And in that 13 years the The report also identifies total new area consented (new that only nine new marine farms and extensions minus

farm space not renewed) was 131.9 hectares. MFA’s president Rob Pooley says the report confirms the huge benefits that marine farming has brought to Marlborough over the last 40 years and that it now delivers those gains from an almost static base. “We are pleased to see the contribution we bring confirmed by NZIER’s report, which doesn’t even attempt to measure the add-on value our industry provides to many other Marlborough jobs and businesses. “Ma r ine fa r m ing a nd processing itself delivers more than one in twenty of Marlborough’s full time jobs and they are well paid. We

produce more than 60 % of the nation’s mussels and salmon and earn around $300m a year in exports.” Rob says the report shows marine farming is doing so with barely any increase in the area it uses in the Marlborough Sounds. “We acknowledge we occupy public space. We are prepared to pay Coastal Occupancy Charges for that privilege but do want to see some security so we can continue delivering the benefits that most of Marlborough enjoys in one way or another.” Rob says the occupancy charges need to be applied to good ongoing research which provides reliable science to marine farmers and the

Sounds community. “We don’t want to fill every bay with farms as some appear to believe but nor can we continue to provide the jobs and exports if we are relegated to some form of cottage industry or face constant unnecessary costs. “What we need is certainty for our continued operations, flexibility for any relocations of farms or to change to new species and the ability to add value to our industry. “We want to work with the Marlborough council and communities to achieve a new consensus that allows marine farming to continue adding prosperity into the region on a truly sustainable basis.’’

Unity lacking on BID debate By Jacob Page Key Blenheim CBD business owners may find it hard convincing some landlords of the benefits of the business improvement district (BID) if a public meeting last week was anything to go by. While key business people including Tim Thomas (Pictured) Michael Fitzpatrick, and Ray McCormick all urged people to get behind the initiative, some landlords refused to accept it as anything more than a hike in their rates. The Blenheim Business Association wants businesses in the zone to vote in favour of paying a levy with the funds pumped towards promoting the central business district.

The levy was based on the capital value of a business - the bigger the business, the bigger the rate. The average rate would be around $305 per occupier.

More than 500 business tenants and landlords have until November 18 to vote on the proposal. The Association was projecting to raise around $120,000 with almost half to be spent on hiring a person to promote and push the BID in a full or part-time capacity. “Don’t see it as an increase in rates, see it as a marketing expense,” Tim told those gathered. Tim spoke of Blenheim having two big assets in the sunshine hours and the Taylor River. Landlord Nick Taber said if the BID went ahead he would have to pay more than $1000, something he felt was silly. “As a landlord it is a 10 per cent additional tax on my council rates.

Police seek info on ‘Black Prince’

“I think a BID is fantastic ... but it’s a sticky plaster on bigger issues in the town. I don’t buy the concept of a marketing campaign.” He suggested free parking and flats above shops to be a better answer. McCormick and Co owner Ray McCormick says “if we continue to do nothing, we’ll get nothing”. Michael Fitzpatrick echoed the statement. “The time for doing nothing has passed,” he says. “Blenheim’s CBD needs serious improvement and this is the best model.” The bid model had proved successful in Auckland suburbs and small towns alike.

Police are seeking information about The Black Prince in relation to a vessel found on the seabed floor of Picton Harbour. Black Prince was a commercial fishing vessel in the 1970s and is believed to have been converted to a pleasure craft in the 1980s. Senior Sergeant Peter Payne said Police believed the Black Prince was also colloquially known as the “Blue Submarine” during its fishing days due to the manner in which it moved through the water.Police would like to speak to anyone who has any knowledge of the Black Prince and anyone who has photographs of it.

Christmas camping opportunity The Department of Conservation are looking for a family who want a unique Kiwi Christmas away from the traditional turkey and tree. DOC has put out a call for a volunteer camp host at the Camp Bay campground in Endeavour Inlet, from December 22 to January 12. “It’s a great opportunity for a cheap Christmas away and a chance to make the most of the beautiful Marlborough Sounds,” said DOC ranger Wendy Sullivan. “Volunteer hosts need to have their own camping gear, although DOC supply a family tent. They need to be comfortable meeting and talking to visitors, encouraging fee payment, and keeping the campsite and toilets clean. Duties take about 2-3 hrs a day, and the rest of the day is theirs

to enjoy. DOC will provide transport from Picton to Camp Bay which is only accessible by boat. There are also opportunities for campers wanting to be volunteer camp hosts in Kenepuru, Cowshed and Ha r vey Bay campgrounds, all suitable for motorhomes as well as tents. As well as getting free camping, volunteer camp hosts will be offered $50 a week towards groceries. Wendy Sullivan said people looking to be hosts should be fit and healthy, good with people and have some camping experience. Anyone interested in being a camp host at these campsites should email soundsvolunteers@ doc.govt.nz or phone the DOC Picton office on 03 520 3002. Letters to the editor

Dear Ed, Hugh Shields’ opinion article was extraordinary, based on assumptions rather than hard facts. But then there’s few hard facts with the blue cod fishery because research is lacking. There’s a distinct lack of knowledge of blue cod population dynamics, e.g. migration, spawning etc. Management needs facts. Now admitted is that the earlier research’s methodology was badly flawed. And little or no research has been done during the closure 2008-2015.

Watch & Clock Repairs Rod Clark

7 DAYS: 5AM - 8PM

Hugh Shields’ article invented a cause and then blamed the recreational fishing public, thereby bordering on a “promo” for commercial fishing. There was no credible evidence of slumps at the closure’s introduction in 2008. Therefore anecdotal was the only option. Based on “hard” evidence of anecdotal catches in 2008 when government’s minister Jim Anderton sought to ban all recreational fishing, the blue cod fishery was in reasonable heart. Contrary to earlier ministry opinion, blue cod probably do

migrate seasonally. Do they migrate to spawn off Cape Campbell? Who knows? Sadly no one. Hugh Shields should take note during the unjustified ban, the commercial catch for area 13 increased 42 per cent while recreational were denied access. Recreational anglers will accept justified and sensible management measures to enhance the fishery but not by penalising one sector to the benefit of the other. Fine kettle of fish! Dear Ed, Unlike Colin King I did not see Hugh Shields confusing the quota system with cod rules. But unlike Hugh Shields I do see the reduction from three to two recreational bag limit as a thinly disguised way of giving recreational “quota” to commercial. If my arithmetic is correct, cutting the recreational bag to two should mean commercial should have their quota go from 70 tonne to about 48 tonne? Unlike Colin King the tradeable quota management system (QMS) is not “the world’s best practice.” Government spin says it is so Colin says it is. A game of “Simon says” eh? The QMS is tailor-made for the big companies to buy out genuine Kiwi fishermen and thus accumulate quota. In time the resource becomes owned by powerful corporates who are very influential on ministers and governments with big party donations. As the saying goes -“it’s a fine kettle of fish” which means which means ‘a muddle or awkward state of affairs’ according to my information Percy Parker

Warm memories of an Antarctic summer Derek Cordes spent six months in Antarctica in 1968/69 using Sir Edmund Hillary’s Massey Ferguson tractors that he and his team had reached the South Pole with a decade earlier. Derek talks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about how Hillary helped him get there and adjusting to 24-hour daylight.

Not many people achieve a lifelong dream at 24-years-old. Blenheim man Derek Cordes certainly did, even if it took a little persistence and a recommendation from one of this country’s greatest ever men. A childhood fan of Antarctica and Sir Edmund Hillary’s world firsts on Mt Everest and the South Pole, Derek applied to be part of a team to go to the continent to work on maintenance for six months. “I had always been keen on going down to Antarctica. “I’d applied twice before and the second time got to the interviewing stage but missed out,” Derek says. “I was fortunate that I’d spent some time building Hopeless Creek Hut in the Nelson Lakes and there was an official opening. “I’d just bought a camera so I went up four days ahead of time and it just so happened that Hillary and his first wife were there. “I was going to clear out but they convinced me to stay so I did and we spent time together and he ended up writing me a letter of recommendation the third time I applied which I’m sure helped.” Derek then received a telegram saying he’d been selected as one of 30 men to fly out for the Antarctic summer. “We trained for three weeks at the Waiuru Army Base and spent quite a few days on Mt Ruapehu. “I was a mountain guide and worked in forestry so it was all beneficial.”

The team was then issued with all the clothing they would need, with Derek being employed as a field assistant. He completed building Lake Vanda Station, they then took fuel and supplies overland to the Bay of Sails while camping in a wannigan which is a caravan on a sledge. “We were at the Bay of Sails with one of Hillary’s tractors that we used to ferry the drums of fuel from there to the Wilson Piedmont Glacier where it was then helicoptered down and distributed to Lake Vanda Station.” “Derek says Antarctica was more colourful than what he expected when they first landed. “I thought it would be very black and white but there were a lot of greens and blues. “Man’s influence with buildings helped too… I was glad I took colour film to get colour photos. “Scott Base was very laid back in those days; looking back on it we probably did some hair-raising things and got away with it. Derek says with Antarctica in full daylight all the time, it took some getting used to. “We were completely out of it. “We knew what day it was but we never knew if it was day or not, we often had breakfast at 6pm at night. “Doing maintenance of Scott and Shackleton’s huts was quite special knowing what those two went through. “Scott Base was wonderful; we ate all sorts - flounder, whitebait,

oysters… We probably ate better there than we did at home. The return journey proved very difficult. “We came back on the Endeavour. It was 10 and a half days coming back… I was pretty sick with the rough seas. “I much preferred the 10 hour flight there. Getting back into Lyttleton it was 37 degrees and of course when you’re in Antarctica there are no bugs so your immune system isn’t

used to it. We all got colds and flus almost straight away when coming home. “Temperatures were so cold I remember seeing someone chuck a cup of hot water out into the open and it was frozen before it hit the ground. “I remember one time, I just didn’t think and I picked up a crowbar with my bare hands and it basically tore the skin right off. “Even going to the toilet was a mission because you had cotton underwear, then a pair of long johns and then layers of your own

personal clothing and gloves on so there was no rushing the process.” The 69-year-old never returned to the ice but did get selected. “I got accepted to become a team leader in 1971 but I was working in the forest industry and they said I had gone once and they kept my job for me but they couldn’t guarantee that again. “I thought about it for a long time and decided to turn it down which in some ways I now regret.” Derek says he has caught up with members of his team twice at reunions since.

keeping those‘nasties’ away from your home...

Where are bed bugs found?

Bed bugs can live in any area of the home and can reside in tiny cracks in furniture as well as on textiles and upholstered furniture. They tend to be most common in areas where people sleep and generally concentrate in beds, including mattresses, boxsprings, and bed frames. They do not infest the sleeping surfaces of beds as commonly as cracks and crevices associated with the bed frame and mattress. Other sites where bed bugs often reside include curtains, edges of carpet, corners inside dressers and other furniture, cracks in wallpaper (particularly near the bed), and inside the spaces of wicker furniture.

Sometimes people aren’t aware that they might have bites from bed bugs.

Since the bed bugs can arrive on the clothing or in the suitcases of guests from infested homes or other ac-

commodation harbouring the pests, accommodation can be an easy target for bed bug infestations.

Cockroaches a pest Cockroaches may be one of the most loathed and adaptable bugs around. Able to survive up to 3 weeks without their heads, nobody wants these bugs hanging around. Cockroaches seek environments in which to breed which consist of food, water, humidity and warmth, and they may enter you home in a multiple of ways including on pets and flowers. It only takes one pregnant female to create an infestation and cockroach numbers can increase nearly exponentially if conditions are favourable. While preventing cockroaches is extremely difficult, here are some things which can be done to help reduce chances of getting cockroaches in your home: eliminate food and water sources by cleaning up and putting all food in sealed containers, remove your garbage in sealed bags, fill in cracks

and crevices which give cockroaches dark, moist places to hide, and removing excess clutter such as old newspapers, magazines and boxes. Cockroach pesticide sprays, gel bait and bait traps may also be effective in the control of cockroaches, if used correctly. For the best results, consult a pest removal expert.

Mosquitoes can be a pain Summer means warmer temperatures and sadly warmer temperatures mean more mosquitoes. The population of mosquitoes more than quadruples during the summer due to the improved breeding conditions, which makes them difficult to manage. They require water to breed as the larval stages are aquatic. An easy way to help reduce the population of mosquitoes is to make sure there is no still water inside or around your home. Mosquitoes also feed on sap from plants which means that having overgrown vegetation around your house can increase your chances of high levels of mosquitoes. Simply by cutting the grass around your house and clearing the bushes you can help to reduce the population of mosquitoes. You can also use bug lights outside and

Flies transport disease While they do not harm us with bites or stings, flies can transport a lot of diseasecausing micro organisms on their hair and vomit – houseflies vomit digestive materials on solid food to make it liquid before they can suck it in. As with the majority of pests, flies are looking for a source of food and a safe place to breed and live. The type of food preferred may include meat, excrement, decaying vegetation,

You can also use fly repellent techniques to eradicate flies, including oils such as Lavender, Citronella, Peppermint and Lemongrass. LAMONT: George Prebble arrived safely on 30 October to Callie and Evan, and brother to Noah, who was stillborn on 22 May 2014. Tremendous thanks to our midwife Adriana Yianacou, for her brilliant pre- and post-natal support and for a beautiful home birth!

MILLER: Alesha and Travis are pleased to announce the safe arrival of baby Dante (7lb 9oz) on November 4th 2015, at Wairau Hospital. Special thanks to midwife Cathy Middleton and staff at the Wairau maternity ward. Both well.

Scott Alexander and Celeste Lodewyk were married on November 7, 2015 at Forrest Wines Cellar Door and gardens in Renwick in a surprise wedding service. The service was officiated by celebrant Coralie Holdaway and witnessed by close friends and family. Photo provided.

Musicians tie the knot On October 4th 2015, Blenheim’s country music duo, NeillyRich tied the knot. Having met at the CCMA Academy, the pair became friends. A few months down the track Amelia flew to New Zealand to see what would transpire. It turned out it was a match made in heaven and destiny had thrown it’s hat into the ring. The duo NeillyRich was formed shortly after and they haven’t looked back. During the relatively short career so far, they have kicked some impressive goals together including their first single “Love Hate Kinda Thing” going to #1 and recently being announced as 2015 Duo/ Group of the year at the Country Music Awards New Zealand (CMANZ). Matt proposed to the love of his life on September 27th 2013, and two years later the big day came around. The day was a big

success with many friends and family being there to celebrate and enjoy the country atmosphere at the Camden Valley Inn. As Guests arrived at the garden where the ceremony was to take place they were greeted to music

played by Martin Vella. Amelia, escorted by proud father, walked down the aisle to Carrie Underwood’s “Look at me”, without a dry eye to be seen. With their own vows and being officiated by friend, Fred

Kellaway, the ceremony was a very personal and moving affair, even Matt’s ring was made by his father. Of course it wouldn’t have been complete without a honky tonkin band to groove the night away to, which was “Bryen Willem’s And The Bayou Boogie Boy’s”. The bride and groom entered the reception, announced by MC Jane Kellaway, to the band playing the Keith Urban hit, “Some Body Like You”, Amelia looking radiant in her gown of white, and Matt with Guitar in hand, they sang out the remainder of the song to each other. Speeches were spoke, songs were sung and dances were danced, and a great time was had by all. This all being possible of course with the love and help of the Bride and Groom’s parents. Now they continue their journey, hand in hand, heart to heart as Mr and Mrs McNeilly-Woolley.

muffle the sound of fireworks and prevent your pets being startled by the lights. It is a good idea to switch on the radio, television or stereo to distract your pets from the sound of fireworks. If there is no human present to look after the animals, it is even more important to leave the radio or television on for them. Make sure your dog or cat has a collar on with up to date contact details (or better yet, get your pet microchipped) just in case they get out and are panicked by the fireworks.

Tips for animals Please remember to make sure your pets are safe on Saturday, November 14. The fireworks are pretty spectacular however they can spook animals so to help keep them calm here are some tips. If you have any health related concerns speak to your veterinarian. Make sure your pets are indoors throughout the evening and that they can’t see or hear the fireworks. Exterior doors and windows should be secured to prevent your pets escaping and running away in terror. Interior doors and curtains/blinds should be closed as this will help

From ‘I can’... to ‘I do’

Sun reporter Celeste Lodewyk’s health journey as she approaches her wedding day.

Surprise! As every journey should have a happy ending, I had mine last Saturday. I married my partner of nine years, Scott Alexander, in front of a very surprised crowd who attended what they thought was an engagement party. And while I am sure there were a few who had an inkling of what we were up to, it was still nice to see the surprised looks on their faces when our lovely celebrant Coralie Holdaway made the announcement that they were in fact, attending a wedding. Scott and I staged an engagement celebration at Forrest Wines Cellar Door, and with me dressed in a black cocktail style dress I managed to keep the surprise hidden. Once the announcement was made I slipped away with my children to change before a beautiful ceremony was held. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day which brings my healthy journey

to a very happy conclusion. I was feeling very happy and comfortable in my wedding dress created by Bernadette Thomas. Of course my new healthy lifestyle has not been forgotten. I requested that our wedding canapes and reception dinner had plenty of healthy options, and I was not disappointed. My lovely friend Jacqueline Lammas of The

Kit returns with own creation Former Picton actor Kit Stevens will unveil his own show ‘68 Per Cent’ in Picton next week. 68 Per Cent was conceived when Stevens was researching live theatre ticket buying trends. He discovered sixty-eight per cent of all such purchases were made by women. Along with actress-director wife, Tiffany Jane, he decided a comedy show recognising the fact should be written. But in a departure from the usual script writing process, the pair then went out and asked people what they might like to see included in the production. As a result 68 Per Cent is arguably the first show largely written by a potential audience. “Because the audience mood and collective dynamic changes every night, so will the show,” Stevens said. “We have a core script, but the audience will drive the show and determine which direction it goes in.” In another radical departure for theatregoers, 68 Per Cent will be delivered as theatre in the round. This style of theatre presentation is exactly what it suggests. The audience are on the same level as the actors and virtually surround the performing area. This allows the audience to become intimately involved in the show to the point they become part of it. Theatre in the round is rarely presented in

New Zealand due to a lack of suitable venues and Stevens believes it has never before been staged in Marlborough. Theatre in the round is gaining a huge popularity and following overseas. 68 Per Cent will play at the Port of Marlborough Pavilion at Endeavour Park, Picton, on Friday and Saturday 20 and 21 November. Tickets are available from Take Note, High Street, Picton, or reserve your seats by Emailing alisongrossband@gmail.com or enquries@endeavourpark.co.nz and you can pay on the night when you arrive. “There are a lot of towns and cities in New Zealand who would give their eye teeth for a venue like the Pavilion.” The venue also has another added attraction. Licensed to seat up to 250 and minimising production costs means ticket prices can be kept low. A single ticket for 68 Per Cent will cost $15.00 while a double pass is on sale for $25.00. Those attending are warned the show does have an R18 rating. Coarse language may offend. The Sun has two double passes to give away for both nights of the show. Simply contact us and answer the following questions. What is the name of the show? What are the names of the two actors? What is the name of the venue?

Polo and picnics for a good cause

By Jacob Page Polo will make an appearance in Blenheim on November 28 all in the name of charity. A ‘Day Out at the Polo’ at Rewi Allen Park in Blenheim will take place to help raise funds for Ronald McDonald House. Event organiser and co-owner of McDonalds Blenheim, Lauren McAuslin says the day will incorporate the best of the region and the sport with several polo matches, picnic style lunches, the traditional divot stomp and even a car versus pony race.

“This is a rare opportunity for the public to experience the fun and festivities around one of the oldest team sports in history and all whilst supporting Ronald McDonald House Charities. “All the money raised on the day will help us continue to fuel our mission of supporting families in their time of need.” Last year RMHC supported 3600 families, including 190 families from the Nelson Marlborough region. This was made up of 3,496 nights in the Houses.

Shield quest over quickly Marlborough’s Newman Shield cricket challenge never got any momentum in their six wicket loss to Nelson at the weekend. The challengers lost two wickets in the first over of the game and that proved too much to overcome in what was already a high pressure match.
