By Jacob Page Blenheim’s Noel Nielsen was on former Interislander ship Arahura as she took her final voyage last week, just as he was on her first back in 1983. Noel was one of two former Interislander staff who accompanied the ship as she was run aground at Alang, India destined for the scrap heap. Noel was an electrical engineer on the ship for the majority of her 32 years of service which came to an end in July.

Arahura reaches end of the line Continued from page 1 Noel says he had hoped the ship would still have a late reprieve on its month-long journey of more than 13,400km journey from Wellington to India but it didn’t eventuate. “There was always the chance she could have been sold to countries with lesser restrictions and lesser certificates. “I was very sad to leave a ship I’d worked on most of my life. “We wound her right up to full power and hit the beach… The irony is that you spend your life at sea trying not to run your ship aground and look what you do on the last

voyage.” Noel says while the ship’s age

counted against her, he felt she had more years left. “Knowing that there was still life in the ship, just the bean counters don’t see it that way. “The age of the ship and the changing of regulations it was beyond any economical proposition.” Noel says it was nice to be part of her final voyage along with retired chief engineer Kent Garnons-Williams. “I saw the ship come into service, I worked on it during its final week of service and I delivered her on her final voyage so there is a level of closure there in a sense. “The Arahura was one of

the last really good ships built because there was a lot more put into it. “Because of the multi-redundancy of features on board she was able to stay on service even with a main engine down. “We were meant to get 20 years out of her and we ended up getting almost 32 years. “In that respect the ship has seen her life out well. “It would have been nice to see it carry on in service somewhere else like past Interislander ships have but it wasn’t meant to be.” Noel still works on a casual basis for Interislander while being semi-retired.

Russ raves about his fall to earth By Jacob Page Blenheim community constable Russ Smith was so excited about his skydive, he paid more to go higher. Russ says of the 15 who took the plunge to earth for the ‘Drop Your Boss’ Challenge to support Kiwi Can, he was easily the most calm until it was almost jump time. “To be honest I was more excited than nervous right up until they rotated around and I was about to be thrown out the door for my skydive,” Russ says. “Most jumped from 9000 feet but I paid a bit extra to go from 13,000 because it give you more free-falling time. “It’s quite a buzz for two hours afterwards you’re really pumped. “It’s certainly something I’d look at doing again.”

Local businesses and organisations were invited by the Foundation for Youth Development to nominate a ‘boss’ willing to be ‘dropped’ out of an aircraft as part of a skydive. The boss invited donations via the Givealittle fundraising website and the funds were donated to the Kiwi Can programme. Russ was nominated as the Chair of the Marlborough Youth Trust by the staff and trustees of the trust. They raised $1000 for Kiwi Can, with a total of $46,920.00 raised for the programme by ‘Drop Your Boss’ to date. Kiwi Can is a values and lifeskills programme for primary students. It teaches important concepts such as respect, resilience and integrity in weekly lessons

throughout the year. Funds raised from the event will be used to expand the programme into two further schools next year – Blenheim

and Mayfield. In 2016 the Kiwi Can programme will be in seven local schools and impacting around 630 kids every week.

Rory gains gateway to his career By Jacob Page Marlborough Boys’ College pupil and aspiring automotive technician, Rory Gilbert has been named runner-up in the Fairview Education Services Scholarship. The Year 12 pupil has been working one-day a week at Wadsco Motorworld and Mayfield Motors as part of the national scheme which is called Gateway at the College. The Gateway programme allows pupils to be paired with employers around Marlborough in an industry they are considering turning into a career. Wadsco and Mayfield owner Wayne Young says he initially accepted a pupil last year more out of community spirit but that soon changed. He says having a scholarship winner, who now works for him

and now a runner-up in two years, his business has benefited greatly from the MBC scheme. “For me it’s all about work ethic and seeing how someone goes in the workshop,” Wayne says. “I want practical skills and I want passion and we’ve had that both times.” Rory says he’s loved his time here every Tuesday. “I knew the workshop was new here and I’ve been around cars all my life so I thought being an automotive technician would be great. “Getting to know the industry has been great,” he says. “When I came here I didn’t know much, just the basics.” Rory says he’s hoping to get an apprenticeship in Marlborough in 2016. The event is free and offers families the chance to make and fly kites. There will also be kite demonstrations and stalls. If it is extremely windy, the event will be postponed until next Sunday.

BID voting closes soon Wadsco and Mayfield owner Wayne Young, Rory Gilbert and MBC transition manager Peter Kemp.

Baker says there are more than 50 Year 12 and 13 pupils taking part in the project this year and a roll of 140 employers interested in the scheme. He says it’s been active for five years and he gets a buzz when he hears past pupils achieving in

their career which they started at school. Transition manager Peter Kemp says it’s important the school offers pupils career paths outside of university while maintaining a strong working relationship within the community.

Theatre to host national brass bands The new ASB Civic Theatre has enabled Marlborough to secure hosting rights to the 2018 national brass bands competition which will bring up to two thousand people into the region. “With the new theatre due to open next year, I’m very pleased to know that a big event like our brass bands championships has already booked its place,” says Civic Theatre Trust chairman Kevin Moseley (pictured). He is also the musical director of the Marlborough District Brass Band. The event will be attended by between 1600 to 2000 musicians and supporters over a six day period in July. Kevin says because Blenheim is

timing and length of the event constitutes a significant boost for Marlborough in what is traditionally a quiet time of year. “This means something in the order of 12,000 additional bed nights for Marlborough which puts it right up there with some of the region’s bigger events making it a real bonus for accommodation and hospitality providers.” The championships coincide with the first week of the July school holidays. Destination Marlborough’s Marlborough Convention Bureau helped the Marlborough District Brass Band to prepare its pitch for the NZ Brass Bands Championships. Marlborough Brass Band leader

Kevin Moseley says the only reason Blenheim was able to lure the event organisers away from the bigger centres was the new theatre and its proximity to the Marlborough Convention Centre. “The national competition sticks to the good venues in the bigger places but, because we were able to provide terrific facilities under one roof and give a strong message about community support, Blenheim is getting the chance to show how well we can host this event,” Kevin says. One of the deciding factors was the prospect of good audience numbers from the Marlborough community which has always been so supportive of its own brass band concerts, he says.

Voting for the Business Improvement District (BID) in Blenheim’s CBD closes on November 18. Businesses and building owners are being urged to make their voice heard on something which has the potential to impact the direction the CBD takes.

Roll juggling act

Primary schools in Marlborough have met with the Ministry of Education to discuss increasing school rolls. Some schools are at full capacity and one or two can cope with more children. There is capacity in Blenheim but it is not evenly distributed says Ministry of Education spokesperson.

Brad gets silver in Japan

Business inbrief

By Jacob Page Wadsco Commercial foreman Brad Beattie made the most of a second chance to compete at the International Isuzu I1GP championships for mechanics, in Japan, by winning a silver medal. Brad, originally for Canvastown was part of a two-man New Zealand team along with a coach which travelled to Tokyo for the event where they competed in the commercial vehicle division dealing with trucks. The 29-year-old was selected for the second consecutive year from throughout New Zealand for a second time after competing in theory and practical challenges. “In Japan there’s a 75 minute exam which I found it pretty intense, they think of stuff you wouldn’t dream of. “After that you have a practical so you

By Jacob Page The Quilters Barn at Vines Village now has its own mid-arm quilting machine. The 14-inch machine takes up almost an entire room above the store and while it’s only half the size of shop keeper Venice Langrope’s one at home, it has proved popular with people. “It’s perfect for home quilters but having one here allows people to come in here and work on their quilts or we can run a pop-up workshop on it. “People might make five or six quilts a year so buying a machine like this that’s

The mid-arm machine makes quilting less labour-intensive with all parts of the making process able to be done without the need to kneel on the ground to grab and pin material. “A lot of people like to do their quilts 100 per cent themselves so being able to hire it out certainly helps with that.” Venice has been quilting most of her life. “It’s rather addictive because you’re only limited by your imagination.”

By Jacob Page Wilson Robledo had plenty of ideas but did not want to look back on his life having not tried to make some of them work. He started his latest Mobile Wash venture with just $50 three months ago and was so unaware of what he needed he used shampoo for hair instead of traditional grooming products. The business is going so well he has upgraded all of his equipment and now uses top of the line products. The 26-year-old, originally from Chile, fell in love with Picton six years ago while travelling around New Zealand. He is an ambitious person with an environmental bent so he started his own business three months ago, which was originally meant to be a car grooming business. “I organised a website for my business

Brad battled against 11 teams in the truck category, in an effort to try to improve on the seventh he earned last year. “Sadly, once you win a medal, you can’t go back, but it was held in their major Isuzu training centre. “The scale of it is unbelievable, you wouldn’t believe how big of a deal it is unless I told you. “It feels like a Japanese game show. “They make you walk out onto a stage with lights and cameras on you.” Brad says being there a second time took the pressure off which he says helped him Brad Beattie finished second in the International Isuzu I1GP championships for mechanearn the medal. ics in Japan.

Nelmac delivers fresh drinking water to fete The self-service Nelmac water tanker made its first appearance in Marlborough last weekend, providing garden fete patrons with fresh drinking water free of charge as part of the company’s support for Marlborough District Council’s Sugar Free drinks policy. Council is promoting the sugar-free message by encouraging all Councilsupported events to provide healthy options rather than sugar-sweetened drinks. It’s a policy adopted at the invitation of the NMDHB after the emergence of alarming statistics about

childhood tooth decay in Nelson and Marlborough. As the main sponsor of the garden festival, Nelmac chose the festival’s big Sunday fete as the first opportunity to deliver fresh drinking water direct to the public in Marlborough. The Nelmac water tanker holds up to 3500 litres of potable water, equivalent to about 14,000 cups or 5,000 filled water bottles. Council is also talking to Nelmac about the possibility of making the specially modified water tanker available for future events in Marlborough.

Chinese consul-general visits Marlborough Chinese consul-general Jin Zhijiang made his second visit to Marlborough last week, meeting the Mayor, council staff, and several local businesses to develop the relationship between Marlborough and China. He was particularly interested in talking to tourism operators about the potential increase in Chinese tourists when China Southern Airline opens its direct flight between Guangzhou and Christchurch in mid-December. Mr Jin met Destination Marlborough general manager Tracy Johnston and was impressed by the Chinese language material promoting Marlborough the regional tourism operator had produced. He also visited Wineworks, Sanford in Havelock, Saint Clair Family Estate, and Marisco’s Leefield Station.

Another solid performance for Marlborough District Council

Mayor Alistair Sowman said the visit was timely, as Marlborough was developing closer links with Ningxia, China’s premium wine-producing area, and Mr Jin has offered to help with sister-city links.

The Sun Royals So sad to think it should be Diana & Charles touring the country. I know time has long moved on but if only there had been true love like Will and Kate and the backing behind Diana it would be so different. How people forget.

Dog friendly Dog friendly, the Railway Cafe. There are hooks for your dogs in the picnic table on the platform, great coffee and lovely food I’m there every Friday lunch time. Calling all dog friendly shops let us know who you are. I have three very well trained toy poodles that give a lot of pleasure to strangers, it’s sad that they don’t get to go shopping with me in town. I take one at a time into Mega Mitre 10, they sit in the shopping trolley on their own blanket and just love it. Thanks Mitre 10 you are the best shop in Blenheim.

Rain Jackets To the person who wrote in about obsession with rain jackets, thank you for the laugh! The fact it bothers you that much you had to contact the local paper is hilarious. To the person who complained of people wearing raincoats and heavy jackets in hot weather. I have cancer, I am very thin and feel the cold. Think before you judge and who cares what people wear? If I get a chill I die so do you think I care what you think of what I wear?

Misleading advertising? Nothing annoys me more than when a product sits on a shelf with the shown price, when you go up to checkout to find that price pertains to another product on another shelf altogether. To me that constitutes misleading advertising. I don’t get the response “you don’t have to buy it”.

Empty shops in Market Street Is it landlords charging too much rent? Wouldn’t it be better to have bums on seats so to speak than NO RENT? Shame really.

Ban fireworks Totally agree, there should be a ban on fire works. A lot of cruelty happens to animals by people with no ability to decipher the difference between right and wrong. Also the fire department would not have to deal with as many fires, and A&E would not have as many burn victims. Who pays for the financial side of all these things that would not happen if there were no fire works??

FIREWORKS is one day. Come on you inconsiderate people... Have a thought for others and animals. I’m a fan of them but every night till midnight is not fair. Something needs to be done to control this. I live in Cleghorn St and am sick of people saying it only happens once a year. We had it Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday night 8.30pm till 2am in the morning. Come on Mum and Dad it’s your turn to stop it. Young mum with small baby.

Please stop feeding the pony To all those who have felt ‘sorry’ for the chestnut pony in the bare paddock on Middle Renwick Rd and fed him, please stop. He has laminitis - more commonly known as ‘founder’ and he can die from it. Restricting his feed isn’t ‘mean’, its exactly what must be done to help him.

Doggie dodo bins poo-poo’d... Last year I suggested it, and was lambasted ‘dog owners should take home their dog’s dodo’s.’ Well, they’re not doing that are they. The plastic bags are great, but disposing of them needs to be made easy... i.e. special bins with small hand size openings (to discourage general garbage dumping). Yes, added cost to ratepayers. And I still don’t own a dog.

Make sure your car is safe Specialists in all aspects of:

Aluminium Cooling Components • Radiators • Oil Coolers • Heat exchangers • Inter coolers

Your car’s radiator is essential to the engine being able to function properly, and when it has a hole or leak this will require radiator repair or soldering. The most common cause of a leaking car radiator is age or collision. Radiator leaks are fairly common and are easier to fix than you might think. While it is possible to fix it yourself, don’t attempt to repair it yourself if you are not completely comfortable with the procedure. It is also important to use the proper

coolant in your radiator. Using the wrong type can be a cause of radiator damage. In order to achieve the best results, a professional full service car repair shop is probably your best bet as they generally will perform car radiator services. Preventing radiator leaks involves fairly simple and inexpensive actions, including regular checks and care, following a coolant maintenance schedule, and even adopting careful driving habits to avoid stress to the radiator casting. Follow a radiator maintenance schedule to help avoid breakdowns.

Summer gardening Summer months are approaching and that means warm weather that can affect not only your lawn, but your garden. As it begins to get hot, experts say this is the best time to get ready for summer gardening. Whether doing it yourself, or considering hiring a professional, there are many aspects to look at improving. Irrigation systems, pruning, weeding, and gutter cleaning are all things which should be well

maintained. Considering aspects such as composting, lawn maintenance, and pest control is also important. Gates, decks and fences should also be checked and maintained, whether they need replacing or just a new coat of paint or stain. Having a well cared for outdoor area is an easy way to spruce up your home and create a great entertaining space for the summer months.

Don’t replace...

REpaiR!

Don’t waste money Broken windows Repair what is broken or damaged need repairing Deciding whether to fix a broken product or spring for a new one often feels like an expensive guess. There’s no need to throw away good money on a new product when the old and damaged can be easily fixed for less than the replacement cost. What some people may not realise, is that Marlborough has a large number of businesses that dedicate their time to fixing,

cleaning and even improving what has been broken. Whether you have an old rusty fence hanging off its hinges, a washing machine making funny noises or an old antique chair passed down through the family - these are all things that can be repaired. Contact any of the local professionals on this page for more information.

Broken windows are a common occurrence in most homes. Some people may be inclined to just tape up the cracks and put off the repairs, and while this may save money in the short term, eventually they will prove hazardous to your health and safety. Particularly when the weather turns cold or throws out blustery winds, broken windows can let out the warm air or worse - break. So don’t risk the health and safety of your family, contact your local glass specialist and have your windows repaired when they break.

New shearing pavilion

Shearing is not dead in Marlborough. Thanks to an initiative primarily driven by new Marlborough A&P Show president Chris Jones. Marlborough now has a new shearing pavilion at the A&P grounds. Chris is also chairman of the local shearing association. With his wife Glenda, they have both worked tirelessly to ensure this new pavilion was ready for the A&P Show. With the help of the Rata Foundation organised by Tony deReeper and Rosemary Wells, the Marlborough District Council

and the A&P association, Marlborough now has a new shearing pavilion to replace the old one which was more than 50 years old says Colin King. “The pavilion is multifunctional, it is more user friendly for spectators and it can be used for Farmers Market.” Top Right: Colin King opens the new shearing pavilion at the A&P Show grounds. Havelock authors launch books Havelock couple Brett Avison and Lorain Day will be signing copies of their new books at the Gallery in Havelock, from 5.30-7.30pm, on Tuesday. It’s a unique occasion - after all it’s not every day that two authors who happen to be married to each other both have a book published at the same time. “We think it’s something to celebrate, and everyone is welcome.” Te Mania — a stunning landscape even by New Zealand standards. Mountain tops, farm country, river fans and flats all the way down to the Pacific Ocean pounding the Kaikoura Coast. This is the story of generations of

Lorain Day and Brett Avison.

one hardworking and high-achieving family — the Wildings — and the sound farming practices and respect

for the land which led to the development of their iconic and commercially successful Black Angus beef stud. Author Lorain Day tells a lively story that touches on biplanes, true love, the pre-World War One Riviera, Wimbledon, thoroughbred bloodstock, generations of warriors, a great Kiwi war hero, a secret mission on a Pacific Island … and the blackest of cattle. Kiwi icon, chef Al Brown, pays tribute to Te Mania in the book’s foreword, and offers the reader four seasons of cooking with Te Mania Angus beef. ‘It’s been a pleasure to contribute four recipes at the end of this book that feature Te Mania Black Angus beef.’ — Al Brown

A Hippo Lives in Havelock is a quintessential Kiwi story. Havelock could be any town in New Zealand and the sense of wonder at a hippo coming to reside in the town could be felt by any little Kiwi kid in their own patch of New Zealand. Brett Avison is the author plus other bestselling children’s titles A Bigger Digger, Ducks to Water, Pigs Might Fly and Stuck in the Muck. Scott Tulloch’s detailed illustrations depict things us Kiwis are familiar with: the NZ Post postie on a bike, camping scenes, the Cook Strait ferry, campervans, our wildlife

and seashells, colonial wooden buildings, town halls and community gardens. The clever text is a chance to promote stories of ourselves in our own backyard. The big question, of course, is how does a hippo fit into all of this? Think of the recent worldwide fascination when a hippo (and other animals) escaped from a flooded zoo in Georgia and ran amok. It captured the imagination of millions around the world, including the imagination of the bestselling author, Brett Avison, who himself lives in Havelock.

What meal do you never get sick of eating? Mexican. And I’ve been wishing for a Mexican restaurant to open in Blenheim for years! Any takers? One of my best holidays was... In the thick of the Bornean jungle doing volunteer work with Orangutans, bliss! My guilty TV pleasure is...

Wentworth - fabulous!

Q A Q A Q A

What would you change about the world? Actually, I think I’d get rid of the human race. Individuals I love, but as a race, we’re very destructive to the planet. (Would make it a bit hard to sell Real Estate) What’s one thing that you’ll never throw away? Just my photos, irreplaceable. Who would you love to have a meal with? That’s tricky. Jane Goodall or David Attenborough probably. But for an outrageous time, Graham Norton!

Q A Q A Q A

The best thing in your life right now? The overseas volunteer work I regularly do with wildlife. It fills my soul and spins my toupee! What is the one thing Sun readers would be surprised to know about you? I don’t think they’d be surprised about much really! Ummm, I was a Fisheries Officer for 14 years. What’s next on your wishlist? I think a trip back to Africa to work with Cheetahs might be on the cards next year.

Green Prescription co-ordinator Debbie Healy (left) Marlborough smokefree quit officer Cynthia de Joux and Respiratory educator for Asthma Marlborough Karen Vis are all hoping for a big turn out for the first ever Blue Walk tomorrow.

Dad skills build chicken coup Mayfield Kindergarten’s working bee means the chicks they have been looking after for several weeks now have a home. A hard bunch of Dads put their

carpentry skills to the test to build the chicken coup while Mitre 10 donated all the materials. The children are now looking forward to getting our first eggs.

Blue Walk for Asthma tomorrow By Jacob Page Marlburians of all ages are being urged to take part in the Asthma Blue Walk at the Taylor River Amphitheatre tomorrow. Green Prescription co-ordinator Debbie Healy, Marlborough smokefree quit officer Cynthia de Joux and Respiratory educator for Asthma Marlborough Karen Vis would all like to see respiratory awareness raised in the region so they came up with this event. Three walks are available, with different distances to suit all levels of respiratory fitness: The 5km ‘Lung Tester’ is suitable for those

wishing to challenge their respiratory fitness! The 2.5km ‘Huff ‘N’ Puff’ is suitable for families and those with a low level of fitness. The 800m ‘Breathe Ezy’ suitable for those who require a less challenging stroll e.g. with COPD conditions or undergoing pulmonary rehabilitation. Entries are accepted on the day between 9am and 9.45am. Entry costs $5 and is required upon registration. Children 10 and under are free. All proceeds from this event go directly to Asthma Marlborough.

New recycling trial for Blenheim and Picton CBDs Red and yellow wheelie bins will be appearing around central Blenheim and Picton very soon, offering the public a chance to recycle their rubbish. The yellow bins will take recyclables; plastic bottles, glass, cans and cardboard, including coffee cups.

Other waste – like coffee dregs and food scraps – will go in the red bins. Council’s Solid Waste Manager Alex McNeil says it’s an experiment at this stage, to see whether the public is going to get behind this kind of recycling. “We’re putting the bins in promi-

nent spots within the two CBDs where people are most likely to use them so we’ll see what the reaction is over summer.” In other parts of the country public place recycling has met with mixed success with some people not interested in using the correct bins

for materials. “The bins will be emptied at the Resource Recover Centre and if there’s too much contamination of the recyclables then it won’t be worthwhile continuing. But we’re keen to give it a try and see how the community responds.”

“It will be interesting to discover whether recycling really is becoming a community habit in Marlborough or whether a lot more education is required before it becomes day to day behaviour.” The trial will run until February next year.

Fun for everyone Last Friday’s A&P Showday was popular with young and old alike. The woodchopping and sawing proved excellent for spectators as did many of the side shows. RIGHT: Charlotte Boyce and Millie Boyce enjoying the day and having their faces painted.

Seventy years married After more than seven decades together Gilbert and Joan Mackie know a thing or two about what makes a good marriage. The couple have just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. They received a card from the Queen, congratulating them on reaching the milestone of 70 years of marriage. The couple were married on November 3, 1945 in Blenheim. Gilbert 94 years and Joan 90, put their success down to hard work and being dedicated to each other. Gilbert said he was a very shy young lad when he met Joan on November 16, 1940 at a dance at the local hall. Several months passed before he saw her again when she returned to French Pass to work as a postmistress.

In the early days they lived on Kenny Isle, in the outer Pelorus Sound where Gilbert worked on a 6000 acre farm with nearly 10,000 sheep, Joan took on the job of cooking in the cookhouse. They went on to have two daughters and a son, who Joan taught via correspondence before they moved into Blenheim so the kids could attend school. Gilbert’s work farming took them to Parnassus in North Canterbury and Dorie, near Ashburton for 10 years. When the couple retired they bought a house in the Mahau Sounds, just out of Havelock. “The thing is we have been together so long, each one relies on the other,” Gilbert said. The couple now live in Nelson.

Join me on ‘The Kane Train’ By Jacob Page I am the president of the Kane Williamson fan club. I’ll happily make t-shirts, form a club and chant his name for the next decade; such is the class of the man. Quite frankly, I haven’t had so much admiration for a cricketer since my childhood hero, Chris Harris. Williamson’s 140 at the GABBA against Australia earlier this week was absolute class. While the rest of his teammates were found wanting against a strong Aussie bowling attack, the 25-year-old No 3 batsman was resolute and assured. He was so good, even the Australian commentators, who rarely take a breath to notice there is

another team playing against their beloved cricket team, were waxing lyrical. Just to prove this isn’t a mancrush gone overboard, here are some statistics illustrating why you should jump aboard ‘The Kane Train’. Williamson has amassed more Test runs at No.3 than Bradman could at that age. The Kiwi craftsman has 2804 runs at 51.92 with nine centuries; ranking him second overall in Test history in runs scored at 25 or younger. South African great Jacques Kallis (3040 at 47.50) tops the poll. Bradman (2691 at 117, 10 tons) is fourth. The Don’s statistics will win out

over the career, but it is rarefied air. Williamson has also amassed more runs in 2015 than any other batsman. Combine that with the fact former test greats like Martin Crowe are already labelling him our best player since Sir Richard Hadlee and the best batsman New Zealand has produced and it’s no wonder the world is starting to take notice. Williamson currently has 11 test centuries, and could conceivably play for another 10 years, mind, body and form willing. So here’s your warning. When you are watching Kane Williamson, you are watching class, world class. Enjoy it.

Sports awards The Marlborough Sports Awards at the Marlborough Convention Centre is almost a sell-out on November 23. The night’s guest speaker is former New Zealand Warriors rugby league captain Steve Price and it will see 34 nominees go up against each other to try to become Marlborough Sportsperson of the Year for 2015.

Updated pace notes for Kennard at Wales By Jacob Page Hayden Paddon says he and co-driver Blenheim’s John Kennard plan to push for a strong performance at the final round of the 2015 FIA World Rally Championship in Wales this coming weekend. The objective is to contribute a good points’ haul to assist the Hyundai Shell World Rally Team alongside team-mate Dani Sordo in their quest to regain second place for the team in the WRC manufacturers’ championship. Paddon says he’ll be taking the same approach as usual as he prepares his Hyundai i20 WRC car for the traditionally wet and muddy Welsh rally roads. “We’ll seek to prepare well and then push as hard as we can on the rally,” says Paddon who confirmed a three year contract with the team just two weeks ago. “Realistically the best thing we can try and do for the team is score big points, and to do that we have

to push. It won’t be enough to just cruise and take points for the lower positions.” Like all WRC competitors, New Zealand’s leading rally driver had just a half day test prior to this rally, offering a chance to make small changes and confirm the gravel settings for his car. Paddon contests the Welsh event for sixth time – Kennard will compete there for the eighth time – and even though he is familiar with the route, he says it’s still challenging. “Yes, it’s a rally we have good experience of but that doesn’t make it any easier. The early winter conditions make for wet, muddy roads and very changeable grip levels. “While I enjoy the fast nature of the stages, it’s reading the grip levels which proves the most difficult.” Talking of pace notes, Kennard says the notes have changed a huge amount since he first did Rally GB.

Blenheim’s John Kennard’s pace notes will undergo another evolution at Rally Great Britain this weekend. “Well, there weren’t any pace the last fractions of a second on notes that first event I did with our stage times against top WRC Brent Rawstron, who’s now my competitors, we’re refining our business partner in New Zealand,” notes with different scenarios for says Kennard. different surfaces and conditions. “Hayden and I are in about the “Everything we’re working on third evolution of our pace note at present is aimed at being in system. the best possible position to start “Now that we’re fighting for next year.”
