‘Best horse ever,’ says John Pretty excited were Blenheim’s John Goulds words after his horse Tiger Tara won last Fridays Woodlands New Zealand Pacing Free-ForAll at Addington Raceway. John shares in the ownership of Tiger Tara with Bob and Jen Sandford and trainer Geoff Dunn, they hope to now get a start in February’s Miracle Mile in Sydney. We were very unlucky in the cup says John, Tiger Tara still had petrol in the tank but he didnt move when he probably should have, but he [Tiger Tara] deserved the win on Friday. Tiger Tara’s regular driver Gerald O’Reilly was one of the first people to put his hand up and say he missed the boat in Tuesday New Zealand Trotting Cup with pacer Tiger Tara

but he went a long way to alleviating his misjudgement with an inchperfect drive behind the same horse in Friday’s Group I Woodlands New Zealand Free-For-All at Addington. He is now proven as one of the very elite pacers in New Zealand and he is only five years old says John and there is still improvement in him. “The race didn’t go right for us on Tuesday, he just didn’t get the run... But jeez, today he took a long time to get in front of that horse (Mossdale Conner).” says trainer Geoff Dunn. “People were ringing up asking how we were going to drive the horse today [NZ Free For ALL] and you just can’t pick how you’re going to drive a horse, you just have to wait and see what happens. “I tried to say good luck to John

[Gould] before the race three times because we were watching (the race together) now I still can’t get a word out of him, so I’m rapt for the bloke.” John looks back with fondness at the day he made the offer for the horse which has netted him and the other owners nearly $250,000 already in 2015. “We didn’t pay huge money for him. I made him (breeder R. P. Anicich) an offer that at the time was very lucrative, but after two races it looks like an absolute bargain. “He’s the best horse I’ve had in my 38 years owning them.” Although Tiger Tara’s speed and athleticism has been coming to the fore, John believes there is far more to him than that. “He’s got that will to win.

He knows where the winning post is. “On the track he gets very excited and he just wants to be there. “At the moment he’s winning sprint races, but I think over time he’ll become a great stayer.” John is quick to point out the significance of Christchurch-based trainer Dunn’s role in his horse’s success. In fact, several years ago, Tiger Tara’s co-owners Bob and Jen Sandford bought his brother, Turbo Tara, on Dunn’s advice. Note:the runner up to Tiger Tara was Mossdale Conner who is trained by Greg Hope. He also has ties with Marlborough, his father is Bluey Hope and uncle was Les Hope.

Sole sisters on the walk By Paula Hulburt Two Wairau Hospital Nurses are putting their best foot forward for charity with a 100km non-stop walk. Friends Charlotte Cottrell and Jody du Plessis have signed up for the annual Oxfam Trailwalk which takes place in Whakatane in April. The intrepid duo will have just 36 hours to complete the mammoth trek and need to now raise a minimum of $1000 in sponsorship. “I hope we’re not going to need our medical training too much apart from dealing with blisters she says. I know people who have lost toe nails doing this walk and that’s not a great thought.” The pair form half of a team of four called ‘Are We There Yet’, who will join hundreds of others taking part in the challenge which will see 17

events being held around the world in 11 countries. They will be supported by a crew of two who will bring a campervan to

help with the issue of toilets. The two will pack six pairs of sneakers between them and ten pairs of socks.

They can take rest breaks for a maximum of 20 minutes per stop which are scheduled every 20km. Jody, who is running the Queenstown Marathon this weekend (Saturday) said they had been walking regularly together. But juggling children and different shifts at work had proved problematic. Charlotte, after hours co-ordinator at Wairau Hospital, said she had walked 21km before in one go. “Finding the time to train together has been tricky. I’m a bit nervous about the walk as I don’t want to let anyone down but it will be a good chance to spend time together and catch up - that’s if I have any breath left to talk!” To donate to the team, visit www. oxfamtrailwalker.org.nz.

Council to ‘review every aspect of parking’

Parking in Blenheim’s CBD is set to be scrutinised by councillors. A full review of Blenheim’s parking strategy will be made by a subcommittee of councillors who want to look at current demand and future requirements for space to park in and around the town’s central business district. Cou nci l lor L a ressa Shenfield, who holds the parking portfolio, says with the current focus on improvements to the CBD it is timely to also look at parking. “I would like to review every aspect of Council-

managed parking, from land purchases for car parks, to parking charges and the meter and ticketing technology that is used,” she said. She said that, with sub-

committee members Brian Dawson and John Leggett, she would review the overall value of parking assets and the level of debt associated with it. “We need to look at the location of car parks and whether we have the appropriate amount of land allocated for the present and future demand, taking into account the growth projections for the local population and of the CBD retail area.” The aim was to produce a long-term strategy, she said. Parking charges, even the concept of ‘free’ parking,

could also be considered. However, Councillor Shenfield says, no one should assume that free parking was ever a reality. “In places where drivers can park without charge, the cost of parking is actually being paid by someone else - for example, provided by a mall owner for customers, or subsidised by ratepayers as a whole or by businesses through commercial rates.” In Nelson, for example, the first hour of free parking there came at a cost to ratepayers of over half a million dollars a year – met partly through a rate on

commercial ratepayers but with all general ratepayers also paying toward the cost, she said. “No one ever wants to pay for parking but people want easy access to parking and retail businesses want steady turnover of parking places so the challenge is to try and get a balance.” Under its current structure Council does not make a profit from parking. The councillors say they would be interested in hearing from anyone with constructive ideas about how parking could be funded.

Captain McCaw, at your service All Blacks captain Richie McCaw may be on the verge of retirement but as he ponders the decision he took to the skies of Marlborough last Friday to help keep the frost off the grapes around the region. With temperatures below zero in the Southern Valleys, Waihopai, Fairhall and the Wairau Valley, McCaw was part of dozens of choppers to take to the sky.

Picton Christmas Parade The Picton Christmas Parade will be held on Sunday December 6 at 2.30pm. Following the parade there will be a concert on the Foreshore. Entry forms for floats can be picked up at Harcourts Real Estate High St Picton at the small charge of $10. Any one or group who would like to join as walkers in the Parade are most welcome, and both the Little Theatre and Edwin Fox have costumes available free of charge.

SPCA get boost with new wheels By Jacob Page Ma rlborough SPCA’s new $30,000 inspector vehicle is expected to increase response times drastically and will be crucial in the organisation getting a second inspector on-board. The vehicle was donated by Trust Power and has been almost two years in the making after Marlborough SPCA manager Kaycee Polkinghorne asked Trust Power’s community relations manager Graeme Purches at the Marlborough Business Awards last year. Graeme says he was delighted to receive the news the 4WD vehicle was ready for the SPCA. “It was just a case of waiting for one to become available on a power station so here we are.” “The deal is we give it to them, register it and once it gets a bit tired we’ll find them another one.

We’ve helped two SPCA’s in Whakatane and here and both are where we have power stations and both are very deserving. “When I was told that we finally had a Ute for Marlborough, I was really excited.” Kaycee says the donation will greatly help the community. “We’re getting a new inspector next year so it will allow us to cover our large area, which is all of the Sounds down to Kaikoura, more efficiently by having two vehicles on the road. “It will help increase response time. “Our call-outs have doubled from this time last year… To date we’ve done 230 jobs this year and that’s just the complaints, with just one inspector. “Trust Power is amazing for us and we are so grateful.”

Nature’s best says winegrower Working with nature is better for the environment and produces wines that are a true expression of the land, says Marlborough wine grower Franzi Grab. She and her partner Lex Thomson bought their four hectare Tua Marina Vineyards in 2006. Initially they used synthetic sprays and fertilisers but Franzi knew there were gentler ways of taking produce from the land. “I’ve always been concerned about how we are growing things and the food we are eating. And also the effect we are having on the environment,” she says. Climate change, blamed for the increasing incidence of floods, cyclones, droughts and other extreme weather events, was another concern. It is blamed on carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide gases emitted from cars, farm stock, coal fires and deforestation. Conscious that “everybody can do something”, Franzi and Lex got rid of their old sprays and fertilisers and started following organic methods to control weeds and replenish soil. Since 2014, their sauvignon blanc and arneis grapes have been grown with the internationally-recognised BioGro stamp. Interest in organics is increasing worldwide, says Franzi, who is originally from Switzerland. She is the treasurer of Organic Winegrowers New Zealand, which initiated a three-year study of vineyards moving from conventional to organic grape production in Marlborough, Hawkes Bay and Central Otago.

Wine grower Franzi Grab says organic practices leave the land more resistant to climate change.

Yields might initially be lower, Franzi acknowledges, but good wine is about “quality” not “quantity”. Organic practices are also more sustainable. Soils replenished with organic matter become more resistant to drought, floods and rising temperatures. The predicted, dry El Nino summer has already started. Plant and Food Research Blenheim recorded 61mm of rain from September 1 to November 10.

Average rainfall for the same period is 134mm. Franzi is joining other citizens concerned about climate change at a public rally in Blenheim on November 28. Similar events are being held that day in towns and cities around the world as people make a universal plea for industries and individuals to reduce their carbon emissions. The People’s Climate March starts at 11am, November 28, in Seymour Square, Blenheim. All welcome.

MBC science teacher and Fisher Trust Fellowship winner Sally Withers with Trust representative Nigel Evans.

MBC teacher wins national honour By Jacob Page Marlborough Boys’ College science teacher Sally Withers has won a prestigious Fisher Trust Fellowship. The original Woolf Fisher Fellowships were awarded in 1960. They are designed to send leading secondary teachers and principals overseas to examine different teaching practices, the Fellowships are now awarded to secondary, intermediate and primary principals and secondary teachers. Through the Fellowships, the Trust acknowledges and encourages excellence in educational leadership and ‘in-school’ practice in New Zealand. Fellowships are not given out via application so each winner is a surprise to everyone. There were 11 recipients across New Zealand secondary schools this year. Sally has produced strong results for her students, particularly Tom Morgan, winner

of the 2013 Prime Minister’s Science Award and Piers Landon-Lane the top chemistry scholarship student in New Zealand 2014. The award will allow her and her partner to travel overseas for three weeks to study other teaching techniques. Sally says her teaching environment was crucial to her students’ success. “I think this school has the expectation and gives us the opportunity and support to put into practice the new ideas of teaching and taking risks with our boys. “I know I try new things in my class all the time and are very forgiving when things go wrong and very complimentary when things work out. “I also have a lovely laboratory with birds singing on either side of me which makes for a wonderful environment when I have to work long hours like we all do to make sure our boys achieve.”

Tempo gets into the spirit By Jacob Page A Christmas concert with a twist will happen this Friday at the Wesley Centre. Emerging Marlborough performers will put on the Tempo Christmas Extravaganza to help support the Salvation Army. Entry is by the way of an unwrapped present which can be gifted to a child in need by the Sallies at Christmas. Tempo organiser Linda Lloyd says while the final line-up for the concert is not yet confirmed, they will have two returning performers who got their first break with Tempo. “Graduates of Tempo, Hadley Anderson and Annabelle Lewis will be singing and they were here when all of this began so it’s exciting to have them back.” The Salvation Army Brass Band will also be playing at the event. “This is our big show for the year and it’s nice to be able to give something back to the community.”

Iona Panoho performs at a previous Tempo concert.

Linda says gifts for all ages are welcome especially teenagers who are often overlooked during the festive season. The Salvation Army would also like any donations of Christmas wrapping paper. The event starts at 7pm.

Sounds sees key landings Landing craft carrying hundreds of troops, military vehicles and other equipment were launched from the amphibious sealift and support ship HMNZS CANTERBURY at Titirangi Bay and Okiwi Bay in the Marlborough Sounds on Friday. The amphibious landing was the centrepiece of Exercise Southern Katipo 2015 (SK15), the New Zealand Defence Force’s (NZDF) major military exercise.

“The amphibious landing demonstrated the NZDF’s ability to deploy offshore Joint Task Forces that comprise elements from the Navy, Army and Air Force,” Acting Maritime Component Commander Commander Martin Walker says. “Numerous operations, most recently in Vanuatu following the devastating aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Pam, have demonstrated this capability.”

Yes, I do like my name because it is not a very common one.

I like my name because it’s an old fashioned name that has carried through the generations to still be popular today.

I didn’t like my name growing up as people got it wrong and mispronounced it. But I have grown into it and like it now because it is a bit different.

I love my name and it is a fitting one for me as I teach piano, guitar, ukelele and even sing in tune!

Yes, because I have had it for over 70 years!

Garden spectacular! Dear Ed, To the Committee behind the hugely successful Garden Marlborough event culminating in a fabulous Garden Fete on Sunday, a huge thanks. These things don’t happen without professionalism, passion, hard work, drive, energy and a committed team of go getters from whom we can all learn much. Tim (as Committee Chairman), Debbie and Julia you should be hugely proud and immensely satisfied of your accomplishments. Marlborough ought to be proud of you too. You have set the bench mark way up there for others

to beat if that’s possible. I venture to suggest if our publicly funded Tourism organisation (Destination Marlborough) were as good at their job as you clearly are at yours, Marlborough would struggle to cope with an onslaught of visitors year round. As it is we are left wallowing behind our neighbours, Nelson and Kaikoura, and remain a sad thoroughfare not a “destination” Congratulations to you all on a superb effort enjoyed by thousands from near and far. Hugely grateful & impressed!

Stand up for Blenheim Dear Ed, I read Julia Gray’s letter in your Wednesday November 4 Sun and frankly I think she and I live in a different Blenheim. I suppose I’m still a new-ish resident after 13+ years but I have never found this town ‘uninspiring’. I lived all over the North Island and just out of Christchurch and my Blenheim is one of the friendliest, prettiest and kindest places I have lived. Sure I think the Council has a long way to go before it realises it represents US but the people in Blenheim are simply the best. After my brain stem stroke last year I got to see the very best of the local humanity and kindness, from the awesome nurses to the boy racers who stopped to

let me wobble my way across the road! I have three dogs and I wouldn’t expect to have them in public restaurants. My wolves wouldn’t like that anyway - they are dogs, not handbag accessories or dress up toys. Take a picnic to Rarangi Beach if you want to dine out with your dogs. They will like that better too. I love shopping in Nelson on occasion but I love to shop local and I love living in Blenheim. Maybe once Julia Gray has been here longer she will see there is a part of Marlborough with an identity of its own and that Blenheim is more than shops and winery restaurant’s. Leigh Maddison

Fireworks

Pest phobia

Dear Ed, When is council going to pass a bylaw about fireworks? I suggest having one night (Nov 5th) and outside of that anyone letting fireworks off gets a $500 instant fine. It would be a better revenue gatherer than increases in and more parking meters. There would be more justification too. The point is modern fireworks are more explosive. Oh for the days of Catherine wheels, roman candles and sky rockets that didn’t emit ear shattering bangs. Todays rockets scare children and traumatise animals. Back then we had the one night- i.e. Guy Fawkes night. Sales should be strictly limited. Sleepless in Blenheim

Dear Ed, I see the pest phobia is alive and well. Recently a Wanganui school held a “pest” hunt for kids and among pests were peacocks! How sick to brainwash primary school kids into the pest phobia. I have also recently read of DOC regarding trout as pests for eating whitebait. The biggest pest are humans destroying whitebait spawning habitat and dare I say for monetary gain selling it. There are at least two households in Blenheim with street notices advertising “whitebait for sale.” If DOC want to do something constructive for whitebait, then decommercialise them. Those selling would then only catch enough for their dinner table and not

for profit - unless they dishonestly indulged in a black market. Meanwhile trout have been here for 150 years. Whitebait catches were massive in the 1950s over 60 years since trout were let go. Predator/prey relationships are part of Nature’s system. Simple 4th form biology. March Brown

Reporter Paula Hulburt talks to those who are closest to the mail boat now. The Torea off loads passengers and freight in Tory Channel at one of the whaling stations.

For more than a century, the iconic Pictonbased Mail boat has been a familiar sight on the idyllic waters of the Marlborough Sounds. Braving high seas, gale force winds and icy Polar blasts, the mail boat has proven its staying power, helping isolated communities and homesteads stay connected with the wider world. Now celebrating a milestone 150 years, the historic service is still as vital as ever. Bought by Tony and Marg Jones in 2006, the Beachcomber Mail Boat is a family run business with the couple running the service alongside their two daughter, Jessica and Lora. Jessica says it is a real honour for the family to continue providing the mail service. She said: “As a family we are all passionate about the sea so it was an ideal business to buy. “We have put our heart and souls into this business.” The Beachcomber Mail Boat is the only officially licensed New Zealand Post Rural Delivery Service by water in the Queen Charlotte Sound. The service started its maiden voyage in 1865 after Picton man Mr H.E Liardet secured the Royal Mail contact using two whale boats, The Swiftsave and The Alabama. Mr Liardet was also credited with saving the life of a young child who had fallen off a jetty into the sounds while he was delivering mail. Witnesses at the time said Mr Liardet had jumped from his boat to rescue the drowning child. The mail run has seen many changes to the boats and the communities it has served. In 1880 the mail boat was a 44ft steamer, the Torea, which has begun life as a private yacht.

Todays mail boat the Tiri Cat. LEFT a poster showing the time table and rates for the three mail boats Florence, Ramona and Wainui that serviced the Queen Charlotte Sounds.

The Picton to Endevour Inlet service started in July 1889 when Horace Norgrove took over the service for the princely sum of $25 a year. Jessica says the service’s rich history was a real draw for present day passengers. “People come from all over the world to visit us. There’s a great sense of history about the routes. To know we are continuing something that has helped shape local history is really special.” As well as showing visitors around the area, the Beachcomber still delivers mail and groceries to people living in the Sounds, operating 374 days a year.

Jessica revealed no two days were ever the same and the variety meant every trip out was different. She said: “You never know who or what you will meet. “People ask us what route we like best but, honestly, each has its own highlights. Whether it’s the pigs at East Bay, the marching chickens at Big Dog Bay or Oscar the mail dog at Blackwood Bay, there is always something special to see.” Adrian Sexton, Rural Contacts Manager from New Zealand Post says the mail boat service had proven itself on many occasions

over the centuries. “New Zealand Post is proud to be providing a mail boat service in the Marlborough Sounds. In every sense of the word, the service is a life line to these remote customers. With limited access to the internet, mail is an important part of their lives. “But the boats don’t just deliver the mail, they also deliver food, mechanical parts, animals, and even people. It’s very important that this service keeps going. The people running mail boats over the years have been a vital part of the community”.

World Prematurity Day (17th November), was founded in May 2010 and officially launched and celebrated as World Prematurity Day in 2011. It has since grown exponentially as a global day around the world marked in more than 50 countries. One in ten babies are born premature, which means around 15 million children are born too early every year. The aim of World Prematurity Day is to raise awareness of prematurity and the concerns of preterm babies and their families. Premature babies aren’t just small, they often face ongoing health challenges. The Neonatal Trust in New Zealand is one of a growing number of support organisations worldwide now supporting World Prematurity Day. Funding is needed in New Zealand to improve the support

provided to neonatal families and the people who care for them, to fund much needed research into identifying the causes of premature birth, and develop treatments and preventions. To donate to the New Zealand Neonatal Trust visit www.neonataltrust.org.nz

Safety in numbers By Paula Hulburt Marlborough school children have proven to be among the most safety conscious in the country thanks to a pioneering project. A ground breaking initiative aimed at keeping local youngsters safe has helped reduce the number of accidents that need treatment by almost half. The Clued-Up kids program has seen a massive 43.3 per cent drop in medical treatment claims after injury for children aged between 10-18 years old. And participants are praising the program for spreading the vital safety message. Dave Parsons, head teacher at Riverlands School says the dramatic reduction, compared to just a three per cent drop nationally, proved the event was working well. “The figures don’t lie and our children are definitely taking the message home. “It reinforces what kids learn at school in a hands-on way they can relate to. The key aspect of this is that the children can relate what they do to real life hazards. “They take the message home and it becomes a real tea table discussion.” The program focuses on real life safety scenarios and over the past nine years, more than 4,500 year five and six Marlborough students have taken part. Schools attend every two years to ensure

everyone gets a chance to go. Alongside local community safety agencies, event organisers have aimed to help build confidence in young people and encourage them to learn life skills. The most recent event at Blenheim’s Brayshaw Park saw children coping with simulated earthquakes, house fires, dog, water and rail safety. Around 45 students from Riverlands School took part in this year’s event. Dave says the children look forward to attending. “The success of this initiative has made Marlborough the envy of many other districts; it really is a great thing to have on our doorstep.” Stephanie Melville from the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) welcomed the latest figures.

In Memoriam

Remember your lost loved one on their anniversary.

Paws for a cause Kiwi band Melting Faces will play at Blenheim’s Yard Bar tomorrow as they look to raise money for a cause close to their collective hearts. All profits from their latest single Thundercats, including royalties and any money they make from their national tour, will be donated directly to the SPCA. The idea stemmed from their drummer Ben Lovell, who with a group of flatmates was adopted by an abandoned cat a few years ago. Being poor students and unsure what to do, they took it to the SPCA for treatment after they realized it was sick. The SPCA were kind, helpful and rushed the cat to feline E.D for treatment. It was during this trip to save the life of ‘Kitty’ – who is still alive and well – that Ben discovered that the SPCA is funded entirely by donations. Fast forward a couple of years and Ben and the rest of Melting Faces are doing everything they can to help be a part of this donations process. Their single ‘Thundercats’ was recorded by NZ music legend Warren Maxwell, and mixed and mastered by Mike Gibson of Munki Studios. The video was filmed at the Wellington SPCA and features a number of rescue dogs that were up for adoption at the time.

Pelorus Cluster proves valuable The morning session of the annual Pelorus Cluster Athletics Day saw 210 pupils of the five schools, Canvastown, Havelock, Linkwater, Rai Valley and Waitaria Bay, run, jump and throw their way around the Havelock School field. The afternoon session took on a unique flavour when about 12 Army personnel on the current Katipo exercise arrived. They were mainly Australians, and with their approachability and patience excelled at the “hearts and minds” aspect of their work. The day was the culmination of a three-week Run-Jump-Throw programme in their schools, conducted by an IAAFaccredited coach Ian Carter. The programme is in its third year and is jointly-funded by Kiwisport, through Tasman Sport, and the schools, with the generous assistance of Marlborough REAP. It teaches the basic athletic movements to all ages, using for example slaloms, low hurdles, quoits and vortexes, through to the more technical shot and discus for

the oldest. No matter how often they had heard, “run straight to the end, don’t watch your mates”, most children forgot it all in the heat of competition. Perhaps it was just to entertain the good crowd of parents, caregivers and grandparents as they ran diagonal lines, cut others off or slowed to run with a friend. The day finished with the longer races, 100 metres for the younger runners and 200 for the older athletes, and the relays. Gallantly, the army runners couldn’t seem to beat the youngsters; some of the older athletes were too challenging, but let’s not mention the 14 kgs of equipment each soldier carried. The medley relays saw several teams of schools, parents and soldiers running, hopping, skipping, balancing a quoit on the head, side-stepping and sashaying back and forth; doing it a second time gave one adult’s team a chance to replace their non-balletic sashayer and everyone a chance to admire the classy style of a male soldier.

Bateman wins sprints easily

Year two running race - Sophie Harrison and Ollie Foote.

meant a long hard fly to make their home lofts. The first flock of birds made Blenheim just before 7.30pm which after the 710 km journey was a very good effort in most trying conditions.

Richard Bateman ensured he would win on his home roads with a commanding performance in the Taylor Pass Rally Sprint. Bateman was never really challenged for top spot despite a class field of 28 drivers

Celtic extend lead Celtic crushed Renwick to extend their lead atop Marlborough senior cricket after Wairau held on for a 24-run win over Criterion Hotel Wairau Valley. The result goes a long way to ensure Celtic will be a finalist next month in the four team competition. Chloe Hackett of Havelock School participating in the obstacle course.

Lis goal enough for win

Birds race over 700 kilometres The racing pigeons of Blenheim pigeon club raced from Invercargill on Saturday, competing against birds from North Island clubs. All were liberated at 7am into high cloud and extremely strong north to north west winds which

19

Carl Kirkwood of Spring Creek recorded his bird first doing an average speed of 57 km/h, next was Donald Morrison also Spring Creek at 56.9 km/h, third position to Chris Bensley on 56.72 km/h, and Alister Cooper, fourth on 56.71 km/h.

A very close finish indeed after such a long distance. Next was Two Fishers loft doing 56 km/h, then Nearo lofts on 55 km/h followed by Shirley Morrison 47.9 km/h and Sindy Kirkwood at 45 km/h.

A late strike from Joshua Lis was enough to lift the Nelson Marlborough Falcons past the Wellington Phoenix youth team in the ASB Youth football premiership on Saturday. The 80th minute goal secured a 1-0 win for the visitors who have now made the top four for the first time since the opening round.
