Culture clash By Jacob Page Blenheim student Jordan Green’s childhood hosting international homestay students from Asia looks set to give her an advantage in landing her dream teaching job in her home town. The 21-year-old aspiring primary school teacher was the only undergraduate from New Zealand to go to a Japan Foundation teaching conference in Sydney earlier this year. She was immersed in the Japanese culture she loves, in an effort to learn new teaching techniques for languages.

Continued page 2 Blenheim’s Jordan Green is hoping her love of Japanese will help her land her dream job at a Blenheim primary school helping primary children with both English and Te Reo.

Jordan aims to break down language barrier Continued from page 1 The former Marlborough Girls’ College pupil is so keen to stay in her home province; she is doing her Bachelor of Teaching and Learning via long distance learning at Canterbury University. “I have a love of Japan and the culture. “I grew up with my family hosting international students. “We had lots of different ones that would be with us for a year but I always had a particular passion for Japanese. “I believe being exposed to different cultures growing up is definitely an advantage for me as I start my career so I’m really grateful to grow up how I did.” The Japan Foundation conference had 30 teachers totally immersed in Japanese both written and oral. “We had three full days of total Japanese. “I found it quite overwhelming at the beginning but by the end it was good. “It was hard, I used to know a lot but I hadn’t spoken or looked at it for about five years, so it was still there and I could pick up a bit but the speaking was harder than the listening. “It was great to find other resources and things I can incorporate when not only teaching Japanese but other languages like Te Reo. “Games, competition, online apps and websites

Jordan Green’s time at the Japan Foundation conference in Sydney has proved beneficial.

– all things I would use in a teaching environment.” Jordan earned a Sister City Exchange Scholarship through the Marlborough District Council to visit Japan for two weeks in 2010.

She says studying long distance has been easy and she was pleased to be able to stay in Marlborough to do it. “The chance to stay here and do placements has been really good.”

NeillyRich keen for home brew By Jacob Page Matt McNeilly returns to where it all began for him 11 years ago, when he and his wife, Amelia bring their NeillyRich sound back to Blenheim this weekend. The country music duo will play at The Yard Bar on Friday night before taking the stage for 75 minutes at the reincarnated Blues, Brews and Barbecues event on Saturday. It was at that event 11 years ago, where Matt was part of

the Marlborough Boys’ College blues band called Redhouse. “That was our first gig so thinking back I’ve come a long way.” Matt and Amelia are now based in Sydney and travel most weekends for various shows. “Even back then, I knew this was the life I wanted. “We don’t mind living out of suitcases, it’s always exciting in a way to see what kind of place you’ll be staying in,” Matt says. The duo won the New Zealand

Country Music Association best group award earlier this year and Matt says he’s excited to be home. “It’s always nice to come back to where it all started,” he says. “We aren’t your stereotypical country band that comes through Blenheim so hopefully people enjoy it.” RIGHT: NeillyRich are back in Blenheim for one weekend only.

‘Disappointed’ BBA urged to go back to the drawing board By Jacob Page Blenheim Business Association president Tim Thomas says the group will meet this week to decide where to go next following the “disappointing” BID poll results. Business owners and landlords in Blenheim’s CBD appear to have rejected the proposed business development idea, with just over half of those who voted in favour according to the weighted voting. Tim says the results were not what the organisation hoped. “It is disappointing but that’s democracy,” he says. “We’ll have a meeting (this

March for climate change People are being urged to turn up to the Global People’s Climate March in Blenheim on Saturday and join the universal call to reduce carbon emissions. Similar events are being staged in towns and cities around the globe as part of a worldwide mobilisation of people addressing Climate change. People attending the Blenheim march, between 11am and 1pm in Seymour Square, are invited to bring banners, friends and enthusiasm.

When asked if he felt the results would be good enough to get it rubber stamped by council, which has the final say, he was unsure. “That’s something we would need to discuss.” Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman says the poll results would make it hard for council to endorse. “The result is very disappointing because the group that put it together have obviously put a lot of time and effort into it. “When you only have 52 per cent

Feathered friend saved from falcon attack By Paula Hulburt A kind hearted College student saved the life of a cockatiel after it was attacked by a bird of prey in Pollard Park. Ryan Bull, 16, was on his way home when he spotted the exhausted bird laying in the grass with the falcon circling overhead. Now the Year 11 student, who has been caring for the bird, wants to try and reunite him with his owners. Ryan says the cockatiel, who he has nicknamed Pikachu after a cartoon character, had blood on his wing when he first discovered it. “When I first saw him he was on the ground with a falcon swooping around overhead keeping an eye on him. “As I got closer he tried to fly away but the falcon hit him and he fell to the ground.

back with him and carefully checked him for injuries. But he has had no luck trying to trace the feathered pet’s owner. He says while he is happy to take on permanent care of the bird he would like to return Pikachu home to where he belongs. “He has lots of personality and while he hasn’t been handled a lot, he is growing more confident every day. “I would be very sorry to see him go but happy if his owner is found.” The New Zealand falcon is the country’s only endemic raptor. There are thought to be less than 3000 pairs of falcons left in the wild, making the species one of New Zealand’s most endangered. They are a fearless predator, with their preferred diet being introduced birds.

Escaped pony horses around in Seddon

By Paula Hulburt A runaway horse who took a scenic tour around Seddon was reunited with her worried owners after a social media campaign kept track of her movements. Miss Murphy, a 13-year old mare, was discovered by surprised residents running along the railway line early on Saturday morning. The cheeky chestnut bay was traced to the golf club through the adjacent vineyards long after she had been spotted at the Bowling Club around 4am. But eagle-eyed residents kept a close eye on the hapless horse and posted regular updates on Facebook site, Marlborough Cool Chat. Grateful owner Annette Johns says she first noticed Miss Murphy was missing at 6am. “I went out as usual to give her a carrot and a scratch and there was no sign of her. “I’ve had her since she was a foal and she’s a very much loved family member.

“I was really worried when she wasn’t there. “I’m just so grateful to everyone who helped. We’ve always referred to her as our forever horse and we are going to grow old together.” It was by chance that Annette’s husband, Trevor, logged on to Facebook. At home recovering from recent surgery, John would not normally have been on the internet at that time. But he spotted the posts about Miss Murphy and alerted his wife who was able to go and collect her straight away. Annette says Miss Murphy could have been missing for hours. “She was certainly very happy to see me. It was such a relief when we saw the messages about her and we knew she was okay. ‘She’s a bit of a character and seemed a bit indignant that I wanted her to leave but she was absolutely fine. Miss Murphy, has quite the tale to tell from “A huge thank you to everyone who her adventure around Seddon on the helped.” weekend.

“There is more to this region than a crisp sauvignon blanc - the people are also of a particularly good variety.” Hot off the press, and on sale now in book stores nationwide, is the 2016 NZ Life & Leisure Insider’s Guide to New Zealand, starring a 22-page ad-free feature on Blenheim. Destination Marlborough has

been working closely with the NZ Life & Leisure team on a number of editorial projects, this particular project involved Destination Marlborough bringing down a writer from Auckland and hosting them for a jam packed four day visit to the region in August to research the content for the feature. Destination Marlborough General Manager Tracy Johnston says tar-

geting media outlets to proactively include content about Marlborough is a key component of our domestic marketing activity plan. “Having an extensive feature on Marlborough in this highly regarded NZ magazine is a great start to our profile for 2016. It would make a brilliant Christmas gift from proud Marlburians to send to friends and relatives this year.”

Tap along to dance production Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Students of the Vanessa Bryant Studio of Dance are tapping their toes in excitement as they approach their annual production this weekend. Teacher Vanessa Bryant says the students have worked hard leading up to their exams in August, and now it is time for them to “have some fun”. The production which kicks off this Friday titled ‘Dance Around the World’ will feature around 14 groups of the studio’s dancers aged from three-years up to 16. Each group will dance to the theme of

two different countries, including Hawaii, Australia, India, Ireland, France, Spain and South America through tap, jazz and hip hop. “We began preparing for this production in September, hours have been spent on practices and sewing costumes,” Vanessa says. “The kids are really excited to share their dances with the community. This is their chance to put all their hard work on show, so we really hope people come along and enjoy the production.” The production will be held at the Blenheim

Musical Theatre on Lakings Road, with shows on Friday night at 6:30pm and then again on Saturday at 2pm and at 7pm. Although there may be door sales, people are urged to buy tickets this week to avoid missing out. Tickets cost $18 for adults and $12 for children, and are available from Versatile Homes and Buildings showroom on Boyce Street in Blenheim. Tourists increase spending Visitor’s spent $294 million in Marlborough to the year end March 2015, 9.1 per cent more than the previous year, according to The Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment statistics. The region was targeting to grow visitor spend by 6.4 per cent and so the over achievement is very encouraging. stores, $54 million on alcohol, food and beverages, and a further $45 million at restaurants, cafes and bars. International visitors spent

a total of $103 million in Marlborough to year end March 2015. General Manager of Destination Marlborough Tracy Johnston reflected that the latest data from MBIE reinforced the feedback from Marlborough businesses that the last year has been a positive improvement. “Not only have businesses had to roll with the punches of the global financial crisis and the Canterbury earthquakes, there has been a more localised challenge to contend with. “The uncertainty of the Clifford Bay proposal over the last

couple of years forced businesses into a holding pattern. “With that behind us, we saw confidence levels improve and business owners starting to reinvest in their businesses.” “The summer season looks bright with many businesses reporting strong forward bookings. “To capitalise on this momentum attention must now turn to ensuring that the region has its doors open and offers a consistently high standard of service delivery that pushes out well into Autumn,” she says.

Phone scams Dear Ed, Further to the piece about scams. We used to get a lot of these but I now know how to handle them. You KNOW when you pick up your phone if it is someone you know. Answer with your number or your name. If it is someone known to you they will say “Hello Mary, Gladys here...” and so on. If it is a stranger then put your hand over the mouth piece and SAY NOTHING AT ALL!!!!! Several of these calls are made at once and the caller will soon get fed up and ring off. Listen to their repeated “Hello, is anyone there? Hello Hello” and keep your hand over the mouthpiece. It is no use getting cross and saying you will contact the police. They can do nothing as these calls come from abroad. It is probably against your natural ethics to ignore someone in this way but this is a stranger and they are invading your privacy. KEEP SILENT and they will soon ring off. Replace your receiver.

Letters on issues of community interest are welcomed. Guidelines are that they should be no longer than 150 words. They must be signed and a street address provided to show good faith, even when a nom de plume is provided for publication. The editor reserves the right to abridge letters or withhold letters from publication. Email them to news@blenheimsun.co.nz or phone 577 -7868. Please note that your name and street address MUST be provided with emails.

Prowling Cats Dear Ed, Rich boy Gareth Morgan is at it again, demonising cats. On TV he depicted prowling cats sneaking around at night, gobbling up birds. Gareth didn’t put his brain into gear. The more likely prey for cats are mice and rats because they are mainly nocturnal. Most birds are not nocturnal. Cats are doing good preying on rats and mice. Money does not maketh the man. But brains and thinking logically are likely too. James Snodgrass

Zeffi Lewis, 8 Blenheim I’d like a box of favourites chocolates. My favourite one is the Moro boost.

Dear Ed, I was reading the paper on Friday when I saw the ‘hot topic’ about how Marlborough parents are getting worried about BYOD. Honestly I see nothing wrong with it. I am not in a bring-your-own-device class, but at home I frequently use my free google account ( set up by school for all students) for submitting and getting feedback on work. It is so much easier and faster than the traditional alternative. There is an editing history so that teachers know whether you have been copying and pasting from websites or not. And no, there is nothing wrong with my eyes because of using a computer, to the person who made that silly comment. Just because it is new and unfamiliar to parents doesn’t mean that they have to go running around like headless chickens, spreading panic everywhere. It’s like the tinfoil man from the paywave advert; just learn about it some more and then you’ll realise that you don’t have to be so paranoid. P.S. keep us updated on the doggy doo bag dropper. Can’t wait to see a photo of the offender. Name and shame!

Foodbank appeal poorly promoted Dear Ed, Every year I like to pack a box of food items for the annual Foodbank appeal, and stand eagerly out on the street with my children to donate to the passing vehicles and fire truck as they go past. But this year I didn’t hear or read about it happening, and it was only by chance I heard the fire sirens coming up our street on Monday night. Even though I was able to scramble a few items together I was disappointed that it wasn’t promoted better so I was prepared. I think there may be many other people in my street who were

equally as disappointed as there were not many standing out with their donations. This is a fantastic and worthy cause, but one that needs to be promoted much better in all the newspapers and radio stations. Foodbank devotee

Nothing ventured, nothing gained Chilean-born Wilson Robledo’s outlook on life is always positive even if life hasn’t always gone his way. He talks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about why he loves Picton, his community spirit, the trials and tribulations of being a small business owner and how he cures his loneliness. Wilson Robledo has made a happy home for himself in Picton and he’s willing to share it with others. When he first came to New Zealand six years ago, he spent four months homeless in Wellington. “I didn’t have the right visa to work but I didn’t want to go back to Chile, so I slept on the streets. The 26-year-old first came to New Zealand in 2009 to see where Lord of the Rings was filmed. After travelling, he returned to Chile and worked in mining but realised his happiness was somewhere else. “I really liked Picton when I travelled through in 2010 on my way to the North Island. “I said to myself that if the opportunity came up I would come back and live here so here I am.” The qualified barista is now trying his hand at community groups and his own Mobile Wash Company he started with just $50 and some hair shampoo. He wants to use the business to fund his own hospitality venture but for now he’s just having fun implementing his own ideas. “A few months ago I realised I wanted to do more and because I was working under a fulltime contract I decided to quit. “I had no plan but plenty of ideas and I

thought why not give it a go and see where it goes. “In October I joined a non-profit dance organisation Street Dance Federation and it changed my life 100 per cent. “I saw two girls working for the love and passion of it and I said to myself that I want some of that.” Wilson still volunteers there and also runs a community cross fit class. He’s also found a giving way to try to make more friends. “Because I don’t have many friends so one day I was lonely in my house and I realised that I can play guitar and I love lots of sports. “So I decided to open up my house to people who are going through tough times. “I put it on Facebook and I got such a good response and we chilled out, had some dinner and played some guitar. “I’ve decided I’ll continue to do it a couple of times a month.” He’s also active in trying to get the Picton Gondola idea off the ground. The Picton Gondola with over 1000 likes on Facebook and I’m helping build support for it. “We know it’s a very big business idea and we just want to get the community together and see if there’s some interest there before we go to council.” Wilson’s first love is still coffee and he has a few plans up his sleeve that he is trying

to get off the ground with investment at the moment. “I’m not scared of losing everything because I already have. “I’d rather fail 1000 times than look back on my life and realise I never gave my ideas a chance. Wilson admits he doesn’t have a lot of spare

time but it’s all worth it. “We all dream but we are afraid of failing or losing. No one in my family in Chile has taught me anything about business but I figure I’ll try, learn and see how it goes. “It’s hard, really hard and I’ll keep learning.”

The ideal environment for women to feel the burn

By Jacob Page Curves Blenheim owner Karen Jennison believes moving the gym to the third floor of the Porse Building is another step towards providing the top quality gym women deserve. “I was painting the other day and I was tired but I stopped and looked out and said ‘man look at that view’ and that meant a lot.” I’m sure the building will be a drawcard for people to come in and have a look. Karen had always been a fan of fitness but an early stint as an engineer and then a toss-up between opening a gym or being a chiropractor, lead her down the latter road. “When I was an engineer in my younger days, I realised I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would,” Karen says. “Then it was a toss-up between becoming a chiropractor or opening a gym. “For many reasons I became a chiropractor but I always had this feeling of wanting to find out what it would be like to own and run a gym, so when Curves came up for sale two years ago, I thought it was my chance.” Karen happily balances both passions now, but still loves the interaction with the women at her gym.

Curves Blenheim owner Karen Jennison says the half price summer memberships are great. Even a few gym sessions can make a big difference.

“I love being there, and I love knowing each person’s name and a bit about them when they come through the door. “I want people to know if they have a problem, they can come to me.

“We do other activities, about a dozen of us did a long walk on the Queen Charlotte Track and we’ve decided we’ll do that once a year. “We have holiday challenges and walking groups, it’s a lot of fun.”

“It improves your flexibility, prevents injury and statistically you get 19 per cent more strength out of your strength training if you stretch afterwards straight away.” The other great thing about Curves is their progress machine Curve Smart. The system knows who you are, logs all your key information, and charts your workout. It shows you how many calories you’ve burned and which muscle groups need more work. “It forces the ladies to sweat it out,” Karen says. “Being able to chart your progress acts like a motivator and you can see women pushing themselves more because of it. “It’s like having your own personal trainer in a way. “You should need a shower after a workout.”

By Jacob Page Karen says Curves women only policy helps to take the intimidation factor and stereotypes out of going to the gym for the first time. “Women can be intimidated by a bunch of guys looking in the mirrors and posing so we don’t have mirrors or men. “Another key point for us is that there is always a personal trainer on hand at all times, so if you need help, someone is always available. Karen is also a big advocate of a forgotten part of gym work – stretches. “How many gyms go over stretching?” she asks. “For me it’s essential. “I will drag people off the street if they try to leave without doing their stretches. “I want people to be doing their stretches correctly and effectively.

Shopping for Christmas Kick the last minute habit for a happier Christmas Every year you promise yourself you won’t wait until the last minute to do your holiday shopping, but for those who have not already made a list, now is the perfect time to start. Also, if you find yourself giftless the week before Christmas, don’t panic. Before you go into a desperate shopping frenzy, check out these tips. With careful planning and the help of our local retailers, you will find everything you need with time to spare. Make a list and check it twice One of the biggest regrets of last-minute shopping is going over budget. Make a list of how much you’d like to spend on each person you are buying for, and stick to it. Write down two or three gift ideas for each person in case you can’t find the first option, and write down the name of the retailers which stock these items. Give gift cards Do you have a relative who is difficult to buy for? Purchasing gift cards is actually a good idea as the recipient can use it to go shopping during the holidays and buy what they really need or want.

Virtually every retailer offers gift cards now, so forget the idea that plastic is an impersonal gift. To dress it up a little, add a personal touch, such as a mug with a gift card to a favorite coffee shop, or a gift card to a book store tucked into a classic novel. Shop on Christmas Eve There are those amongst us who like to shop on Christmas Eve. And there is nothing wrong with that. If you have the time why not make an evening of it by dining out on an early dinner then hitting the shops afterwards. It’s also a great way to see what items have made popular gifts this year by seeing what others have bought.

Baby’s first Christmas Baby’s first Christmas is filled with special milestones. Here are some tips to make baby’s first Christmas a special one with these traditions and ways to capture the cute moments. Choose a gorgeous stocking This is the stocking you’ll pull out year after year, so get something you really love. Start a new family tradition : Make it a ritual to read the same special holiday book each year, watch retro holiday specials like Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Visit Santa Sure, your baby has no idea who the portly guy in red is. But you do, and so do your parents, who will get a big thrill out of seeing your baby sitting on Santa’s lap in photos. Buy a keepsake ornament Ornaments are all about the memories associated with them, and this first Christmas is a biggie. So commemorate it with a sweet ornament you’ll love pulling out year after year.

A healthy heart It’s up to you to take care of this vital organ

131 Middle Renwick Road Springlands

Mole Checks The Skin Clinic Marlborough is equipped with high resolution digital mapping technology allowing early detection of melanomas and other skin cancers. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment can result in a complete cure from skin cancer. The clinic provides a comprehensive range of treatment options and is now approved by Southern Cross as an affiliated provider. Make an appointment today to have you and your family’s skin checked.

A broken heart can heal, but a damaged/ diseased heart may not. One organ we really can not do without is our heart, so it’s imperative that we look after it. There is plenty of advice available on what makes for a healthy heart, but there are some very important factors that are proven to help to keep the heart healthy. Many of these are not only health related, but lifestyle related too. Think of it as a lifestyle change rather than dieting because by living and eating in a healthier way you will feel better, more energised, more confident and happier. Reduce fat: A certain amount of fat is good for a well balanced diet but reduce the amount of fat and the type of fat you eat. Saturated fat affects blood cholesterol levels, so try to eat less full-fat dairy products, cakes, cookies, pastries and burgers and replace with monounsaturated fats such as olive oil, nuts and avocado. Polyunsaturated fats in small amount helps reduce cholesterol so oily fish (salmon, sardines) and oils like sunflower, corn and soya oil are good. Eat less salt: Eating too much salt has been linked to high blood pressure.

A recommended level is 6g a day. Put less in cooking and try not to add any salt at the table. Exercise: Regular exercise improves heart function and lowers your blood pressure and blood cholesterol. Thirty minutes of moderate exercise every day is recommended. Keep weight down: Too many calories, fatty foods and being overweight is really bad for you. It puts extra stresses and strain on your heart, makes you feel lethargic and deenergised. Try eating more fruit and vegetables, less sugary foods, eat more unrefined carbohydrates such as seed breads, wholegrain cereals and pasta. So-called soluble fibre may also help reduce cholesterol so eat oats, beans and pulses such as kidney beans, peas and baked beans. Stop smoking: Although it’s down as step five, quitting smoking is one of the most important things you can do. It dramatically cuts your chances of getting heart and respiratory diseases, cancer and emphysema. If you have already had a heart attack quitting will reduce the risk of a second one.

Good health begins at the roots Beetroot is often hailed as a ‘super food’ by health experts, celebrated for its ability to help the body eliminate toxins and prevent fatty deposit build-ups. One suggestion made by nutritionists is to drink beetroot juice to help reduce blood pressure. Young beetroot leaves can be eaten raw

and are packed with iron, so add some to your salad today. The roots are a good source of many other vitamins and minerals, including folic acid, phosphorous, magnesium and B6, so next time you feel you are lacking in diet, juice up some beetroots or make a fresh salad.

Our Op Shop will raise necessary funds to help feed and care for the abused, unwanted animals in our area.

Donations gratefully accepted The tamariki of ABC Springlands visited the St John’s Community Shop.

Children find treasures at charity shop By Jenna Beaumont To further extend our group focus of “imaginitis”, the tamariki of ABC Springlands, Ruma Tui, went on another trip, but this time to our local op shop, St Johns Community Shop. We set off with one mission, and that was to buy some new dress ups to bring back to our room. Once we reached our destination, we met with the manager of the shop and she talked to us about who and what our money supports after we have purchased items from their shop and how we are giving back to our community. The tamariki chose many different outfits,

78 Cleghorn St (03) 579 4686

many of them being dresses. Once the decisions were made, we sat down and read some of the books they had in the shop. The tamariki even wanted to buy some of the books as they found many that they enjoyed exploring through. After this, we brought all of our selections up to the service counter and we made our purchase. What an experience! Thank you so much St John Community Shop for allowing our tamariki to come to your store to extend their group focus of Imaginitis. They had so much fun!

Mackenzie wins back to back awards By Jacob Page World champion lightweight double scull rower Sophie MacKenzie took out her second consecutive Marlborough Sports Person of the Year Award, on Monday night. The 23-year-old won her third sportswoman of the year title in a row. She paid tribute to the amount of quality sportspeople Marlborough produces on a regular basis, many were in the 300-strong audience that packed into the Marlborough Convention Centre. Cricket’s Ben Wheeler was named sportsman of the year. The injured Black Cap, who won for his debut in the one-day side in England, accepted the award while wearing his father’s suit after his bags were lost in transit. Wheeler’s main aim is to continue to make the New Zealand test team which is considered the highest level of the sport.

Celtic the team to beat Celtic look like the team to catch in senior cricket after their third convincing win in succesion. Celtic chased down Valley’s 125 all out with six wickets to spare on the main ground at Horton Park in Blenheim, while on the no 3 field Wairau claimed a winning draw but fell one wicket short of an outright win following some gritty tail-end batting from Renwick.

Seddon Shield stays put Ben Wheeler. The Tasman Makos were named Team of the Year for their 2014 campaign in which they reached the National Provincial Final against Taranaki. Volleyballer Eloise van Velthooven won Junior Sportswoman of the Year and squash nominee Quinn Udy was announced as Junior Sportsman of the Year. Roy Titheridge was recognised for his 30 plus years of dedication to junior volleyball in the region

Softball’s Seddon Shield will remain in Marlborough hands after the home side prevailed 5-3 overall in the rep fixture at Blenheim’s Lansdowne Park on Sunday. Both senior men’s and women’s Marlborough softball teams recorded victories over Nelson teams as the province kept the Seddon Shield. The men won 4-0 while the mercy rule was in use as the women won 16-1. Marlborough retained the Shield 5-3 across eight grades.

Sophie MacKenzie and Julia Edward celebrate being on top of the rowing world once again. MacKenzie secured back to back Marlborough Sportsperson of the Year Awards with the effort. Photo: Igor Meijer when he became the third recipient of the Marlborough Medal, which is awarded annually. Rugby league player Steve Price proved an entertaining guest

speaker, as he shared the joys of his second chance in the game and the importance of trying to enhance your own personal brand.

Falcons go down

Spring Creek fanciers take honours A very strong gusty westerly wind greeted the Blenheim racing pigeons flying from Christchurch on Saturday. Fanciers in Spring Creek took

all the honours and a credible performance by Carl Kirkwood to take first position at a speed of 69.4 km/h for the 240 km distance and this pigeon was his only entry.

Second place to Donald Morrison with 69.1 km/h followed by wife Shirley doing 68.2 km/h. Fourth place to Two Fishers loft 67.7 km/h, then Alister Cooper

Southern United beat the NelsonMarlborough Falcons 2-0 at Logan Park in their ASB Youth League match in Dunedin on Sunday afternoon. A strike from golden boot leader Ben Kiore and central midfielder Ben O’Farrell, were the difference as the defending champion Falcons slumped to their third defeat.

64 km/h, Nearo lofts 60 km/h and Sindy Kirkwood on 53 km/h. No racing next week in readiness for the clubs last major events in two weeks.
