$63m super school

By Paula Hulburt Marlborough Boy’s and Girls’ Colleges are set to join forces to create a co-located $63 million super school. At a special assembly, Education Minister Hekia Parata revealed plans for the new project which will see both schools located side by side in 2021. And while the colleges will remain single-sex, students will be able to share state-of-the-art facilities.

Colleges set for bright future Continued from page 1 The Minister welcomed the move, saying it was “very exciting for Marlborough and New Zealand”. “Real life includes boys and girls and this was the smart solution. “This gives the community a chance to have a real say not just about what is taught but where and how it’s taught. “I would have been delighted if my daughter had attended such a facility as the one that is planned for Marlborough.”

The move follows two years of uncertainty about the colleges’ futures. The next step will be for the Ministry of Education to secure a suitable site. The hall at Marlborough Girls’ College was packed to near capacity with students, teachers and parents all nervously waiting for the Minister’s announcement. Severe gales saw the Minister’s flight delayed but she wasted no time in revealing her decision before the expectant audience.

“I want to thank the schools and their communities for their feedback and input into the consultation process. “I’m delighted the colleges and their communities have seized the opportunity to put kids at the centre of the learning pathway and we are backing them to succeed.” The Minister also thanked MP for Kaikoura, Stuart Smith, for his input and “tireless work.” “He has done a lot of work for the community and he has kept a

bright and optimistic face in front of parliament.” Marlborough Boys’ College and Year 10 student Eddie Ave was at the special assembly. He welcomed the decision saying it would bring “more opportunities” for students. “There’s been a lot of talk about what was going to happen so it’s great to finally find out. “I think it’s a positive step for everyone”.

Hunters rescued after injury Seagull sparks fire callout Fire crews from Marlborough’s forest fire were diverted from their job on Sunday afternoon to tackle another fire which broke out near Havelock. Helicopters were quickly deployed to Cullens Point, just outside Havelock, a 10 minute flight from where they’d been working in the Waikakaho Valley, after a member of the public reported seeing the fire start after a seagull hit a power line. Marlborough Principal Rural Fire Officer Richard McNamara said the fire began about 1.30pm on DOC land, close to a public access track and was just metres away from large dry tracts of gorse. “It would have whipped away very quickly if the gorse had caught. We were lucky to get to it so fast.” Four helicopters and three fire crews were able to get the fire under control within two a half hours, he said.

At approximately 9:30 Saturday morning the Life Flight Trust rescued two hunters and a dog from bush inland from Ward in Marlborough. Life Flight responded in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter with a Wellington Free Ambulance Paramedic on board. One of the hunters was suffering from a shoulder injury after a fall Friday evening. The hunters were able to walk to a small hut near Isolation Hill but a rescue was not possible due to the weather last night. Life Flight was contacted just before 7am this morning but low cloud in the area meant that it could not respond until the cloud lifted. The hunters called at around 8:45am to say the weather had cleared. Once overhead the scene the paramedic was winched to the patient. A small clearing was then located a short distance from the hunters; the paramedic, two hunters and the dog made their way to the clearing. One hunter, their packs and the dog were dropped at their vehicle and the injured man was transported to Wairau Hospital. The Marlborough man in his 20’s was suffering from an suspected shoulder dislocation and the pain from the injury prevented the men from walking out of the bush.

New bin for marina This summer the Marlborough District Council will be installing a large, enclosed rubbish bin at the Picton marina. The bin is for the use of Marlborough Sounds residents and holidaymakers returning to Picton by boat with their bagged household rubbish on board. The bin is not intended for use by Picton residents.

Some of the crowd that gathered on Monday for the Marlborough Airport Terminal’s official opening ceremony.

Airport’s terminal officially opened Story and photos by Celeste Alexander Marlborough Airport’s new terminal was officially opened on Monday in front of a large crowd, eager to celebrate what was described as an ‘outstanding achievement’ for all who were involved. Mayor Alistair Sowman, MP

Stuart Smith and Head of Regional Airports at Air New Zealand Jeremy Holman each gave a speech, explaining the significance of the expansion prior to the ceremonial ribbon cutting. “Wow what an achievement,” says Alistair. “There were about 9500 flights

Ward fire Three fire appliances and two tankers were called to a plantation fire near Ward on Marlborough’s east coast last Friday. It was the second fire reported in Marlborough at a time when fire fighters were already battling a forest fire north of the Wairau River on commercial forestry land. Crews from Seddon, Rarangi and Ward managed the fire.

coming in while this project was taking place, so congratulations to the construction company for managing the rebuild while the terminal was still operational. “Our airport is the key that links Marlborough to the rest of the world, so we want people to have a bright, friendly and comfortable

experience when coming through our doors which I certainly think has been achieved,” he says. According to Jeremy, Air NZ enjoyed working with the Council on the expansion. “This has been a fantastic project and one for Marlborough to be proud of.”

Brush with danger

Emergency services were called to Ngakuta Bay yesterday around 4pm on Sunday. A male in his 50’s suffered cuts and bruises to his face whilst trimming trees. He was attended to by a St John crew then airlifted to Wellington for further treatment.

A ‘Mary’ Christmas for family By Paula Hulburt A cockatiel who went missing for seven months has been reunited with her happy owners in time for Christmas thanks to The Sun newspaper. Jan Boese thought she had lost her bird, Mary, forever, after the cheeky cockatiel flew out of her aviary after Jan went to feed her. But after hearing about the article in last week’s Sun, Jan was amazed to discover the cockatiel local boy Ryan Bull had saved was indeed her

missing Mary. Jan says she is amazed the bird survived for so long out in the wild. “People told me about the article in the paper but I honestly didn’t hold out much hope as she had been missing for so long. “I was delighted to recognise her and I sent a photograph to Ryan who confirmed the bird he rescued had the same markings as my Mary. “It’s just so great to have her home again where she belongs.

Coming in on top for the main prizes were, in a tied second place, Jonathan Beldham and Raymond Watson, and first place ‘Man of Movember’ was awarded to Matt Metcalf. he hadn’t decided. “I don’t usually have a moustache but the jury is out on this... I will see what happens. “I have won an award for it now so I might have to think about it,” he jokes. Nationwide PAK’nSAVE has raised over $60,000 for Movember, and in Blenheim over $2500 with more still to come.

Log removal is in full swing so the key safety issue is managing the traffic on the forestry roads. The estimated figure of around $900,000 has been given for fire fighting alone, not including forestry losses. The damage is mostly in the private forestry but in terms of

Marlborough District Council owned forest: As at Saturday November 28 the Marlborough Regional Forestry had lost due to fire, 87 hectares of Pinus radiata in the Waikakaho Forest, and the tree crop burnt has an estimated value of $183,000.00.

Renwick residents thanked for reducing water use Last Thursday Renwick residents were asked to reduce their water use immediately or face water restrictions from next week. Mr Rooney praised the Renwick community for responding brilliantly to the call. The Renwick water supply wells had dropped so the rate of pumping had to be reduced to prevent damage to the pump equipment. Average daily consumption for Renwick from Sunday to Wednesday had been 3064m³/d. The effort to reduce consumption on Friday reduced that to 2827m³. Mr Rooney says this represents a decrease of 237m³, equating to a percentage decrease of about eight percent. Mr Rooney says with the hot dry weather, demand has been running higher than is desirable. If residents can

continue to keep the demand down as they did yesterday the need for restrictions will be able to be delayed. Mr Rooney is appealing to Renwick gardeners to follow good water use practices: Watering of gardens should take place outside the heat of the day; early morning or late evening Use a timer to irrigate after 8:00 pm.

Irrigation should be undertaken using soak hoses so that water is placed at the base of plants. Don’t use systems that throw water into the air – they waste a lot of water through evaporation Avoid irrigation water flowing onto concrete or driveways, this water goes to waste and is not benefiting vegetation.

Exotics welcome Phone scammers Dear Ed, Those responsible for the enhancement work on the Taylor River Reserve with tree planting deserve congratulations. While walking my bichon I was impressed with the tree planting of “exotic” trees which when grown will be splendid. It’s good to see acceptance of so-called ‘exotics’ too. Many non-native trees i.e. exotics are great for native birds, e.g. flowering gum. There are juvenile native trees planted but just a tip, they badly need watering which shouldn’t be too onerous. Plus the plantings are too close together. But those things aside, great work on the Taylor Reserve. Don Coyote

Yes, computers do slow down over time, this is quite natural and the good news is that it can be remedied. Just like a car computers need a certain amount of maintenance which if not done will lead to “slooow computer” syndrome. If you have recently had ultrafast broadband installed and things aren’t happening as fast as you think they should let us give your computer a good service and clean out, even if you are still on ordinary broadband your computer will thank you for it.

Dear Editor I have had a whole heap of fun with these phone scam people. I have asked them to talk to my husband because he knows much more than me as he’s a Senior Police officer..oops they’ve hung up. Another is I let them ramble on and then say I have an Apple computer. They hang up then too. I told one lady the number was a brothel and we didn’t have a computer. She asked what a brothel was and when I told her she hung up....I didn’t get a call for over a year! My latest is to yell in my loudest voice “you are a scam! How do you sleep at night ripping off innocent people?” I haven’t got to the second bit yet..they hang up! Such fun! - Leigh Maddison

Where’s the justice? Dear Ed, When a person (who was seen) can intentionally damage other peoples property leaving them thousands of dollars out of pocket and without an income for sometime, then gets the charges dismissed in court. How and why, when another can damage a sandwich board and get convicted and charged, and of course there’s those that get convicted, charged and penalised on hearsay, where’s the justice!! Does it add up, I don’t think so. Totally Confused.

Lifeless 1080 areas Dear Ed, Two letters on 1080 (25 Nov)were like chalk and cheese. Doug Carter’s excellent letter summed up the deathly silence which follows 1080 drops. Conversely Barry Baxter’s letter read like Forest and Bird rhetoric using smokescreens and mirrors to avoid reality. Baxter should ponder why tiny NZ can claim to use over 90 per cent world’s 1080, despite being only the size of Colorado-one USA state. The reason for 90 per cent is 1080 is banned in many countries and severely restricted in others. NZ is not unique in wildlife behaviour. Wildlife, predator prey relationships and food chains behave the same world wide. Baxter seemed to deny this and confused herbivore possums with carnivorous rats. 1080 decimates everything. Rats are no exception. But unlike possums (one young a year) rats with 40 young a year, bounce back (Landcare Research’s Ruscoe 2008 and Sweetapple and Nugent 2007). The rat has been here for 800 years. Birds and insects can cope as long as the scales are not tipped in rat’s favour, as happens with aerial 1080. Conservationist Bill Benfield put it well in his excellent book “The Third Wave”. Baxter should read it. I’ve just been to South Westland. 1080 has left it silent and lifeless. Lloyd Hanson

Friendship forged at the crease Michael Wilson and Graeme Hawtin were a key part of some of the glory days of Marlborough cricket in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. The two latest Marlborough Cricket Association life members spoke to Sun reporter Jacob Page about the importance of the win, scoring centuries in rep trials and still not getting picked. Michael Wilson is adamant he was faster than former test paceman and fellow Marlborough opening bowler, Gary Bartlett. All you had to do was look at the wind direction any given Saturday. “I always bowled with the wind… I was faster,” he says. “I don’t think we lost a game for six years there,” Michael says. “A game against Takaka, they were all out for 16, there were four runs off the bat and 12 extras,” Graeme says. “Michael took 6 for two and Gary took 4 for 2. “That’s how good they were together. “We never had an older ball much, it was all over with the new ball,” Michael said. “In those days they used two piece balls so they would swing more and hold their shine.” Michael and Gary were in every class together from primmer one, and every rugby team. “We were friendly rivals, we’d go out on the school paddock every night of the week and play and get booted off at half past five. “If I looked up at the board and Gary had four wickets and I had three and the captain came up to me and said ‘have a spell’ I’d say no way not until I have another wicket,” Michael says. “I had arthritis by the time I got the ball,” Graeme says. Graeme was an allrounder and an integral part of winning the Hawke Cup in 1968 during a career which spanned from 1958 to 1976. Not that he had it all his own way. “One time I was playing in a rep trial for the Marlborough team and I scored 107 and still didn’t get picked,” he says. “Work that one out.” Michael started as a 15-year-old for the senior men’s team, “I didn’t have a long run up, about 16 and a half yards. “The best memory for me was going over to Nelson in 1956 with a bunch of bums – possibly the worst Marlborough team ever and we ended up beating them outright.

“They had an unbelievable team,” he says. “I still don’t know how we beat them. “The teamwork and camaraderie was fantastic in that team even though we were three or four short on the Thursday. “It was the biggest fluke ever but that’s what set our era going.” Michael remembers playing a game in Whangarei where they were confronted by 75 gang members and the team walked right through them to get to the game. Michael says he loved coaching. “If I had played after I was coaching I would have been a double international… I was good from the grandstand.” Both men remember a night when members of the Wairau and United had gone to the tuck shop on the edge of Horton Park after practice for some lemonade and buzz bars. The two rival clubs shared the ground and were set to play the second day of a game against each other in the coming days. “United were batting on the second day and all of a sudden we saw these white gumboots make their way out onto the

pitch,” Graeme says. “We realised it was Bartlett, he was giving it some extra water on the Thursday night before the game on Saturday. “I think World War Three broke out after that.” Michael remembered one time during a club match, his captain instructed his players to bring a fork to the game to “diffuse the pitch” and make it crumbly. Graeme says he remembered one time against Nelson during a season where he had the most runs and wickets when he was picked purely as a batsman in the eyes of the Marlborough captain and selectors. “Bevan Congdon was on 199 when I got my first bowl. “All our bowlers had none for 100 so were asking the captain to give me the ball so I could get a taste of the punishment. “I run in first ball and Congdon nicks it straight first slip and was out. “I just stood there and suggested I should have gotten the ball earlier. “That’s one of the funniest things about cricket.”

Food favourites When it comes to sampling baking who are our best critics? Children! So it’s no wonder that some tasty recipes have come from the students and families of Renwick School, in their newly released cookbook titled ‘Yum’. Throughout the book there is a huge selection of recipes from brunch and snacks right through to desserts and baking. The cookbook was put together by a small committee of the Parent Support Group at Renwick School including Nadia Crighton, Brenna Nation, Michelle Chee, Donna Wilson and Anna Colman. Incredibly this group managed to not only compile a huge list of recipes and photographs from the Renwick community, but also some celebrity favourites from the likes of Dan Carter, Jamie

Oliver, Annabel Langbein, Nadia Lim, Brooke Fraser, Ama Agbeze, Antonia Prebble and Sam Mannering. The book is being sold for $25 and is available at Renwick School.

Former Nurses’ home not in good health By Paula Hulburt Demolition work on the former nurse’s home at Wairau Hospital has been put on hold indefinitely. The historic 90-year old building was closed in 2010 and scheduled for demolition. Now health officials have revealed there is no money to fund the wrecking work Patrick Ng, General Manager of IT & Infrastructure at Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (NMDHB), says the building was initially abandoned as it had been highlighted as an earthquake risk. “In addition we suspect there are asbestos issues with the building. NMDHB believes it is not economic to recommission the building and has no plans to do so.

NMDHB does not currently have available funds to demolish the building, nor does it have plans for the site the building sits on. The building is likely to remain in situ until both of those conditions change.” The now dilapidated home was built in 1925 to improve the accommodation and study facilities available to student nurses working at Wairau Hospital. The building is classed as a category 2 under the Historic Places Act 1993, making it a place of “historical or cultural heritage significance or value. Hundreds of trainee nurses have walked through its doors and many were present at the farewell ceremony back in 2010. Today, the building is over-

Babies Building Blocks is coming The popular Babies Building Blocks Program held previously at Blenheim Playcentre, will be held at Renwick Playcentre from February 2016. Every Monday, the ten week course, for 6-12month old babies and their parents / caregivers, will allow adults and children to get together each week, sharing ideas, and playing and learning alongside each other. The course will offer a chance to experience what Playcentre is like. “Playcentre is run by families for families. Parents learn from each other in a supportive environment,” course facilitator Poz Poswillo says. The Babies Building Blocks course is for all parents, whether younger, older, ‘first timers’ or those with older siblings.

“People enjoy exploring different types of play with their babies and find it helpful to ask questions. “Both babies and adults also make friends along the way,” Poz says. “At Playcentre children develop the curiosity and courage to try new things, and the motivation to extend themselves. “The topics covered were relevant to my baby’s developmental stages. I felt like I learned valuable and useful parenting skills. The supportive and caring environment was fantastic,” a parent who has attended the course says. “My daughter loved the sandpit, swings and the heuristic play. Most of all she loved watching the other children.”

The 10 week course for 6-12 month old babies and their parents / caregivers costs $30 and has limited spaces. Registration for this popular program is essential to avoid disappointment. Email Louisa Woods at louisaannwoodsnz@gmail.com.

Christmas in the Park a ‘special occasion’ says volunteer By Celeste Alexander Behind every successful community event is the team of volunteers who drive it. Each empowered with their own enthusiasm and willingness to help others, it’s these volunteers who help to make the event that little bit more special. The Christmas in the Park team of volunteers is led by Murray Milmine who co-ordinates up to 20 people on the day. Murray has been part of the Christmas in the Park event for a number of years alongside wife Lorraine who serves on the committee.

Murray Milmine

It was his involvement with the Blenheim Ministers Association helping to run men’s events that

saw him get involved. “I love it. “It’s a special event with great entertainment for all ages,” he says. “Who wouldn’t love to be involved with such a happy occasion, especially when it brings joy to people.” In addition to co-ordinating volunteers, Murray is often seen directing traffic and parking and generally keeping an ‘eye-out’ to ensure everyone has a good time. Asked what he was looking forward to the most this year, Murray says it is the entertainment lineup and visual effects.

“Every year there are different types of entertainment which keep it fresh and interesting, and this year is no exception. “It’s a great set up in a great location. The kids can play on the playground if they don’t want to sit down and the adults can bring along a picnic and blanket and relax. “I encourage everyone to come on down and enjoy what is on offer, and join in to remember what Christmas is about. “It will be a fun afternoon... put on a Christmas hat and we will see you there.”

Music is joyous to all By Celeste Alexander Music is one of the major highlights of Blenheim’s Christmas in the Park event, so it’s no surprise to see Ken Ham’s MusicWorks as a regular supporter. Owner Ken Ham says he has supported the event from the beginning as he believes in the event and the efforts of those organising it. “Christmas in the Park has a nice feeling to it and makes people happy. It’s a well attended event with a nice group of people and a nice community event, so we are happy to support it. “Christmas is a warm, sunny and happy time of year and we have the good fortune of having arguably the sunniest place in New Zealand... so

why wouldn’t you go to this event,” he smiles. Being a firm advocate of music Ken likes to support Christmas in the Park by donating some ‘musical goodies’ and generally encourage people to go along and enjoy it for themselves. “Music should be fun and enjoyed by all,” he says. Traditionally Ken has donated ukelele’s to the event due to the enormous popularity of the instrument right through the ages. “Ukelele’s have been such a turning point in this industry. People who never thought they would learn an instrument pick one up and really enjoy them. “Everyone smiles when they play, they are a fun instrument,” Ken says.

CELEBRATING OUR VOLUNTEERS

Thank you

to all of our amazing volunteers, who gift their time to help reduce the incidence and impact of cancer in Marlborough.

Volunteers are not paid .... not because they are worthless but because they are priceless!

Lend a paw Whether you’re a dog person or a cat person, or even a tradesman or cleaner, SPCA Marlborough has a wide range of volunteer roles which could suit you. In every capacity they serve, volunteers are a highly valued resource to our society and are making a very real difference to the lives of so many animals. Whether you are interested in being hands on with the animals, or would prefer to help with non-animal care roles, there is always something you could do. Roles vary from animal care, training and walking, to maintenance, one-off projects and events. The SPCA is reliant on our community for volunteers and funds to help support and care for their animals.

Marlborough SPCA are currently launching a project to bring their dogs in from the cold. Lundons Law have kindly offered to sponsor the building of an indoor dog shelter, but the SPCA now needs volunteers to help make this happen. Raise a paw if you can donate some of your time or materials in crucial areas such as building, electrics, plumbing, insulation, or draining. If you think you could help with Project Warm Paws email Phil - the ‘warm paws’ coordinator at spcadogshelter@gmail. com. For more information or if you are interested in volunteering with the SPCA, give the centre a call or visit them on Fox’s Island SPCA Volunteer Vicki Green help the organisation by Road to fill in an application organising fundraising event throughout the year. form.

Small or large, volunteer contributions appreciated Story and photo by Celeste Alexander People looking to volunteer for their community are always welcome at the Cancer Society Marlborough office. Ready and smiling to greet anyone interested is volunteer and office co-ordinator Hilary Gill, who says volunteers are the very heart of the organisation. “We really are a volunteer driven organisation and rely heavily on the support we receive all year round. “Volunteers help us on all levels, whether it’s helping with one event per year or on a regular rostered basis. Every minute our volunteers offer us is so gratefully received,” she says. Cancer Society Marlborough volunteers help in the following areas: • Raffle co-ordinator • Driving patients to appointments • Supporting fundraising efforts

• Putting up and taking down of shade tents throughout the community and schools • Office volunteer support Currently there are some areas which are short in volunteers. “With the busy summer season here we require someone to set up our shade tents, someone with the know how and a larger vehicle to transport them. “We also need more volunteers to help marshall at events such as our up and coming ‘Walk for Life’ in February, so if you think you could spare some time to help in these areas we would love to hear from you,” Hilary says. Volunteer training is provided by the Cancer Society as well as ongoing support for every role. If you are interested, call in and visit Hilary and her team at Cancer Society Marlborough at The Forum on Market Street, Blenheim.

“ It’s about our team

and doing the right thing”

Civil Defence in our area is made up of mostly volunteers. People who dedicate their time and energy to respond to a call to help those in need. While their work goes largely unnoticed their dedication and training means as a Community, we are more prepared to respond to and recover from, an emergency event. So thank you to all the Civil Defence volunteers that dedicate their time and energy to our community. If you are interested in knowing more about CD Emergency Response Teams and Incident Management Teams, please call 03 520 7490 and ask for Marlborough Emergency Management.

Thank you The volunteers of Marlborough are the people who make a difference to our community and they richly deserve our collective thanks. So many of them work away behind the scenes, dedicated to the causes, the organisations and the clubs which depend upon their energy and industry, yet they are not always publicly acknowledged. The fire last week in the Waikakaho Valley reminds us again of the contribution that volunteer fire fighters make keeping us and our property safe. Firefighters are the kind of people who care about their communities and want to be actively involved in them. It is a very tough job, requiring serious training and teamwork as well as a willingness to take on personal risk.

Our special thanks goes to them this week. We are fortunate to have so many who are so willing to help others. So, on behalf of the community, I want to extend a sincere thanks to all those who volunteer in any way to help make Marlborough such a great place to live. Alistair Sowman MAYOR

Volunteers are not paid .... not because they are worthless but because they are priceless!

Charitable market benefits many By Celeste Alexander One great example of volunteers at work is the annual Mistletoe Market held in Blenheim’s CBD. The market is in its 38th year and is run by the Blenheim Lions Club. Each year club members volunteer their time to help run the event which raises money through stall site fees which

the club then puts back into the community in a variety of ways. This year there will be 45 members involved in the market which is set for this Saturday from 9am - 2pm. Around 150 stalls will be on display in Market, High and Queen Streets selling everything from food, clothing and jewellery, through to toys and

Christmas themed items. Performing in the morning will be the Blenheim Brass Band, adding a cheerful ambiance to the market. New to this year’s event will be the inclusion of the Artisan Market which will be set up in Wynen Street. Co-convenors Charles Riley and George Jensen say the club and its members are proud to

bring an event like the Mistletoe Market to Blenheim every year. “What began as a small in Market street has grown in size and popularity over the years which just shows how well it is embraced by the community,” Charles says. Following on from the Mistletoe Market will be the Blenheim Christmas Parade at 3:30pm.

Women’s Refuge Women’s Refuge is a key national organisation working to end domestic violence towards women and children. Women’s Refuges around New Zealand provide education programmes and support services, information and safe housing to women, young people and

children experiencing abuse, and advice to their concerned friends and family members. The majority of their workforce is voluntary, assisting thousands of families every year to break the cycle of violence. There are many ways you can help support their work.

You can train to be a Women’s Refuge advocate and work directly with female, youth and child victims of domestic violence; help collect donations in street appeals that raise the funds vital for the survival of our local refuge; or help our local refuge with varied tasks like collecting furniture and

clothing, cleaning or gardening. To be a volunteer at Women’s Refuge it is vital you are supportive of women and children’s rights, able to listen, are nonjudgmental and keen to learn. Contact the Marlborough Women’s Refuge with expressions of interest or for more information.

Hospice volunteer ‘met with warmth’ Story and photo by Celeste Alexander The gift of time can make such a difference in the lives of many. This is one of many reasons why Gillian Mutch has given her time as a volunteer to Hospice Marlborough for the past five years. When Gillian and her husband moved from the Marlborough Sounds into Blenheim, she was really looking forward to helping in the community so she approached Hospice Marlborough. “We were living in Double Cove which was boat access only, so when we moved I thought ‘great, now I can do something to help others’. “I am so glad I went to Hospice as I felt I wanted to give something back and I was met with instant warmth and friendliness... it’s a lovely place to volunteer,” she says. Gillian spends most of her volunteer time on the desk, answering the phone and greeting people as they arrive. She has also spent time in the kitchen helping with meals. “One thing I will say about Hospice is that they look after their patients, staff and volunteers beautifully. “The people there are wonderful and caring

towards everyone,” she says. Asked what advice she has for others considering Hospice volunteer work, she insists it’s rewarding and worthwhile. “You meet new people, it broadens the mind and you learn new skills along the way. “For me personally it has helped to grow my confidence, so if you have some time to spare I really do recommend you make contact,” she says. Hospice Marlborough volunteers are a valued part of the hospice team and as a group donate tens of thousands of hours to the hospice every year. Prospective volunteers complete an application form, attend an informal interview with the Coordinator of Volunteers and participate in both formal and ‘on the job’ training. Volunteer opportunities include: • Assisting in the in-patient unit • Sitting with patients • Reception duties • Assistance with meals • Supporting patients and family in the community • Bereavement support • Life story writing

Hunter’s Cafe

Story and photo by Celeste Alexander When it comes to tempting the taste-buds, nothing goes down better than sampling award winning local wines and perfectly matched platters to nibble from. This clever combination has seen Hunter's Café grow considerably in popularity, as diners have relished in the relaxed ambiance of the garden setting and the simplistic style menu. Hunter's Cafe was originally launched last December and following on from the positive feedback, owner Jane Hunter is pleased to be offering it again this year. "The idea of having tasting platters has been really well received by many. What we find is that many people don't feel like large meals so being able to sample some of our wines and nibbles goes down a real treat. "Our customers have commented on how simple, easy and enjoyable it is here which is exactly what we are trying to offer. "Come along, enjoy the garden and unwind. We have arm chairs inside, tables for groups and outside we have family sized

tables and bean bags. It can't get much better than that," Jane says. The cafe is open seven days from 11am and has a number of platters to choose from. They include: • Cheese • Mixed meats • Hot smoked King Salmon • Locally made paté "Our cafe is very welcoming to families and even offers a children's platter with cheese, crackers, dried fruits and popcorn. "We also offer children and adults icecream and milkshakes, so there really is something for everyone," Jane says. To satisfy your sweet tooth Hunter's Cafe has a delectable gluten free chocolate brownie, and for those with a slightly larger appetite there are mini pizzas to start with and even gourmet pies. Jane recommends trying Hunters new 'pink bubbles', the new Miru Miru Rose. "Our Rose is also a lovely pick for enjoying over summer."

Local heroes the toast of town A special award ceremony was held last Friday night at the Scenic Hotel to honour a number of Marlborough’s local heroes. As part of the 2016 New Zealander of the Year Awards, the 12 Kiwibank Local Heroes were presented with specially made medals to officially recognise their achievements. Mayor Alistair Sowman presented the medals and congratulated the recipients on their awards. “These fine people embody the qualities that have long held our community together. Their charity, selflessness and generosity have touched upon the lives of so many and make our community a better place to live. “They really are Marlborough’s very own local heroes,” Alistair says. Kiwibank CEO Paul Brock said Kiwibank was proud to support local communities celebrating their outstanding citizens during the past seven years. “The Local Hero Awards are very special. They recognise good people in our com-

munities. People whose sacrifice, optimism, and commitment make others better off. “They might not see their deeds as special. They’d be the first to say they’re not special people. But we know otherwise so these awards are Marlborough’s way of saying thanks.” The recipients of the Kiwibank Local Hero Awards for Marlborough were: Ross Banbury Beryl Bowers Betty Boyce Jennie Crum Graeme Faulkner Leslie Hamersley Deborah Jane Healy Stephen Leitch Di Morrissey Shirley Roughan Nancy Sherwood Erica Ticehurst

Blenheim schools congratulated Education Minister Hekia Parata today congratulated Blenheim’s 18 primary schools, one intermediate and two high schools on becoming the first Community of Learning to agree on the achievement challenges that will drive collaboration between the schools. “Blenheim has been the first region in the country to step up to the collaboration challenge and I want to acknowledge its leadership and the enthusiasm that this reflects,” says Ms Parata. “As a result of agreeing to their achievement challenges, Blenheim’s schools will be receiving extra funding for new lead principals and teacher roles. However, the benefit to students will be keeping their local school identity while gaining the extra expertise of Blenheim-wide teachers,” says Ms Parata. The Blenheim Community of Learning has agreed to the following achievement challenges: To reduce the number of Year 1 to 8 students who are below the national standard for maths, reading and writing

David set for speedway action Story and photo by Celeste Alexander When you put Blenheim man David Livingstone in a shed with tools and a beat up old car, what does he do? He creates something he hopes can win in on the track at Eastern States Speedway. David has transformed his flatmate’s Ford Telstar into a production style car which he will race in the Farmlands/Golf Oil Series which kicks off this Saturday. With a bright paint job and a list of sponsors on the side, David is looking forward to the start of the series. This three event series running December 5, January 9 and January 23 will see David go head to head against his opponents in a non contact fashion before finishing off in a bumper grinding, metal crunching derby race.

For David being near and on the track is not new to him as he has grown up “living and breathing” speedway. “My father raced a stock car then I joined the club in 1991. My mate Dave Rennie raced in saloons before marrying my sister, so it’s a big part of the family now,” he jokes. David spends most of his days at the track as a pit crew member for the Metal Munching street stock team, helping out Bruce Foster and Daniel Honey. “I would like to say a big thank you to my sponsors Metal Munching Racing, Jack’s Tyres, Martin Motors and Marlborough Vehicle Receivers. “It’s going to be a great event so come along and support us,” he says.

The Farmlands/Gulf Oil race series was first introduced to Eastern States Speedway by club president Frank Burns, and is in its second year. This event allows a novice

driver to race on the speedway track. The series runs over three nights over the summer with the cars racing three times per meeting. Points are awarded over the

series to find eventual winners but points are awarded to the car as opposed to the driver. Drivers then have the option to enter the demolition derby, or install a rollcage and safety equipment

and compete in other speedway classes. This enables the car to have more than one driver, making it a great race option for businesses or groups.

German influence at Sport Tasman

New Zealand companies could do more for the health of their staff by allowing them to exercise during work hours, says a German student in Nelson to research sports programmes and trends. Rebecca Grau is about to head home after spending the last three months working for Sport Tasman as part of an internship exchange organised by Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology and her university in Villingen-Schwenningen. The 20-year-old from Stuttgart, who is studying business administration, has been comparing the sporting systems of the two countries while in Nelson. A keen volleyballer, she says while sport in Germany and New Zealand is well integrated,

popular and an important part of the culture, there are significant differences. “A big difference is that in New Zealand there is a strong focus on schools and children doing sport, while in Germany the focus is more on clubs with not only children but also adults doing sport there.” In Germany, companies are more likely to take a greater interest in the health management of their staff, she says. “This means that employees have the chance to do some sport exercises during work so that they can better handle the stress and increase their performance.” Ms Grau says this may involve a company paying part of a gym membership or providing their own gym, allowing

staff to take paid time-outs to exercise, providing an in-house physiotherapist or doctor free of charge, ergonomic work stations and rooms where they can relax and take a break from the computer screen. “Such an approach had been shown to lead to fewer sick days and healthier, happier and more productive and loyal staff. “New Zealand could also offer more sports programmes for older workers, she says. In Germany many people over 50 do Nordic walking which is easier on the joints, while health insurers in conjunction with gyms often provide incentives for older people to take up sport and fitness programmes,” she says.
