Santa delight

While Blenheim basked in sunshine for its annual Christmas Parade on Saturday, Picton was not so fortunate the following day. Hundreds of people lined the streets of Blenheim to catch a glimpse of the bearded one along with a cast of locals and several colourful floats. TWICE WEEKLY

Continued from page 1 It proved a busy weekend for festive activities in Marlborough with the Mistletoe Market captivating Blenheim’s main streets and turning the town into a hive of market activity.

It was the 38th year of the Mistletoe Market with hundreds looking for Christmas bargains as well as clothing and food. The Picton Christmas Parade was dampened with rain showers and cold winds

whipping throughout the afternoon. Crowds did emerge however, but many were driven back under shelter. Those in the parade braved the conditions and did so with cheerful smiles and festive

waves. The delight on the faces of ‘Santa’s helpers’ riding in the sleigh couldn’t have been happier, and did a great job of sharing their Christmas spirit. The parade featured well

known characters including Postman Pat and Rudolf the Reindeer riding a scooter, as well as local marching teams, volunteer organisations and various business floats.

Fowler report costs MDC $18,500 Marlborough District Councillors have received clear guidance about appropriate governance in the form of an $18,500 Fowler report from the Queen’s Counsel who was asked to look into the circumstances surrounding the leaking of confidential Council business to the media. The council sought legal advice from Wellington QC Richard Fowler after confidential council information about a public-excluded meeting in September was leaked and councillor Jamie Arbuckle publicly discussed an item on the meeting agenda. The report also examined Arbuckle’s comments about a staff member. Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman says the decision to seek a

legal report on the whole matter was prompted by both the leak of confidential Council material and by a Arbuckle’s personal attack. Sowman says the advice held two important messages for councillors about their conduct. “Firstly, the Fowler report found that in all likelihood a councillor had leaked confidential material. “Any Councillor who leaks confidential information is in breach of his or her obligations and undermines proper governance practices.” Sowman says councillors often received sensitive information in the course of their role. While generally, Council’s business was conducted openly, there

were times when confidentiality was required. Commercially sensitive decisions required discussion in private as did issues of personal privacy of individuals. Failing to respect these rules would break down trust and would, in some situations, open the way to legal action. Ha says it was unacceptable for a councillor to comment on confidential information leaked by somebody else. Such comment compounded the leak and could make the situation worse. Secondly, and very importantly, the Fowler Report has a clear message to councillors about their responsibilities as a good employer, said Mr Sowman. “The Fowler report underlined that, under no circumstances, should an

individual councillor place Council at risk of legal repercussions for failure to meet its obligations under employment law. “We found ourselves in a position where an elected councillor attacked the integrity of a staff member who is unable to defend himself. “The Fowler report suggested that a way forward was for the Councillor to privately apologise in an appropriate way or for the matter to go forward to the Conduct Review Committee of Council for its consideration. “However, as I understand that the Councillor involved has now tendered an apology, I think we can declare the matter closed.”

Christmas wish for MS sufferer By Paula Hulburt For many, Christmas is a time of happiness and hope but for one Blenheim lady, this year is especially poignant as she fears it could be her last. Multiple sclerosis (MS) sufferer Paula Davis needs a life changing stem cell transplant and has been battling to raise funds to get the procedure done. But with time running out she has revealed she is frightened that she may not be around to share Christmas with her family next year. Paula, 39, was diagnosed with remitting and relapsing MS in 2009 and her symptoms have steadily worsened. She says her only hope of saving her life is the stem cell transplant which has to be done in Russia as it is the only country in the world undertaking the complete procedure. “I am very pig-headed and have been determined to beat this thing

but sometimes it does get the better of me. “There are days when I cannot walk, or talk, my eyesight goes and each time I have an episode I never recover completely. I get tired, so tired, and it can be a real struggle to keep going “It is only going to get worse and if I don’t have the surgery done before I’m 40 then the chances of the transplant working lessen. “If I do make it to Russia then there’s a five percent chance I won’t be coming home.” Paula, who has around 20 lesions on her brain, needs to raise around $85,000 NZ dollars to travel to Russia. And she would “dearly love” to take her partner, Clinton Irain, with her for support. It was Clinton who discovered the potentially life-changing procedure was available. Paula says she would not have been able to keep going without his help.

Labour’s Little in town Opposition Leader Andrew Little will visit Blenheim on Thursday and Friday, visiting local businesses, meeting with Party members and supporters and speaking to GreyPower Marlborough and the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce.

Police search for driver Police are trying to track down the driver of a car that was involved in a hit and run in Blenheim. The man failed to stop for police on two separate occasions and drove into another car while trying to evade police on Monday. He was driving a red 1998 Holden Commodore. There was no warrant for the man’s arrest but police wanted to speak to him. Sightings of the car, registration number JCH539, should be reported to the Blenheim Police Station.

The look of love - MS sufferer Paula Davis and partner Clinton Irain.

But the mother of one has factored in the cost of returning her body home to New Zealand if she does not survive the transplant. The pair have raised almost $13,000 towards treatment. Paula says she would be “so grateful” if people donated to the

fund. “Even if it’s just a dollar, it all helps. I am doing all I can but it might be too little too late.” To donate visit www.givealittle. co.nz and search under Paula’s name.

Renwick water supply falls The Wairau Aquifer which feeds Renwick township’s water supply is continuing to fall. The recharge wells have reached their lowest since 1982 with levels dropping to a point not normally seen until March-April.

Rain dance needed for dry Blenheim By Jacob Page While Blenheim basks in the early glow of most likely being the sunniest town in New Zealand for 2015, statistics show the town is set to have its driest year on record. Despite light rainfall to begin December, Blenheim still needs 30mm of rain to avoid it becoming the driest year since records began 86 years ago. The current driest year was 1969 which recorded 341.4 mm.

Rob Agnew.

The results collated at the Blenheim Meteorological station

located at the Grovetown Park campus of the Marlborough Research Centre will be grim reading for firefighters with fire hots spots still at risk despite the bit of rain early this month. Marlborough’s resident weather expert, Rob Agnew says while 7mm of rain has fallen this month, it’s unlikely another 30mm will fall. However, Blenheim has been known to have decent rainfall to see out the year in the past.

Well known ‘foodie’ headed to Havelock By Jacob Page Kiwi chef and television personality Michael Van de Elzen is set to bring his own brand of cooking magic to the newly renamed Havelock Mussel & Seafood Festival next year The event takes place on March 19 at the Havelock Domain. The need for emergency accommodation is at “critical levels”, according to Marlborough Citizens Advice Bureau co-chair Sue Duncan. She says there are parents with children, single men and women, entire families with nowhere to call home, sleeping in garages, with friends or family in crowded conditions and when these options run out, sleeping in cars or in Pollard Park. “Designated emergency housing is needed in our community. modate families and single people who need a place to live short term, along with support to get them back on their feet and settled into permanent housing “ says Sue. A number of community groups are supporting CAB in an approach to the Council asking them to initiate urgent action to establish these facilities.” Citizens Advice Bureau is well-placed to comment on social issues as it assists various clients each year with over 500,000 enquiries nationally.

The Marlborough Bureau deals with between 12 and 15 enquiries each year from people seeking housing help but this is just the tip of the iceberg as many more do not approach the Bureau for assistance. “There are very few options to offer these clients. We can suggest hostels, boarding houses, local Marae or camping grounds but some of these are beyond their means or are not suitable for families with children,” she says

Fluoride plans leave nasty taste for protestors By Paula Hulburt AN anti-fluoride campaigner has warned Marlborough residents that adding the mineral to the region’s water supply could have “catastrophic” consequences. Mary Byrne, from Fluoride Free New Zealand, has warned people’s health is being placed in jeopardy by health bosses looking for a “quick and cheap fix.” But health chiefs have denied the allegations, saying they believed fluorodisation to be a safe option. Speaking prior to a talk on the topic over the weekend, Mary says the public need to be more informed about the side effects of fluoride. The moves comes after a recent announcement by Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (NMDHB) that they were seeking to appoint a fluoride promotion advocate. They believe adding fluoride to the water supply will help battle tooth decay, especially among children. While no appointment has yet been made, Mary says it was “ludicrous” to promote the concept. “The Health Board think they’re going to save money by cutting back on the number of general anaesthetics needed. “There is evidence that show it has a detrimental effect on people’s health, causing problems with thyroid, bones and brain development. “Advocates always say that the amount ingested is negligible but how can they actually know how much someone might consume over a lifetime?

Mary Byrne from Fluoride Free NZ considers the region’s fluoride future

“They’re being very sneaky about it all and didn’t even want to attend the meeting.” NMDHB Chief Executive Chris Fleming says while the DHB welcomes discussion, a decision was made not to formally attend the meeting. Principal Dental Officer Dr Rob Beaglehole says the Board’s position will be guided by the science, which clearly shows that fluoridation is completely safe. “The anti-fluoridation lobby represents a vocal minority opposed to a safe, practical, health initiative that is supported by most of the community. “They are a lobby group that pushes questionable science in the face of hard facts.”

Why two? Dear Ed, Flag Referendum - Why two Referendums? Surely one referendum including of course the present flag should financially, practically, and honestly be sufficient to give the correct result and all straight forward. So are the ones promoting the change of flag including John Key aiming at manipulating the results to get their own way? Can we be sure that the number of the winner of this 1st referendum are honestly counted and destroyed before the 2nd referendum and the same number of referendums sent to all voters for the 2nd referendum, and the same publicity, including photos of course, given to both flags for the second referendum? For what reason are there two? P.S. Apart from many other reasons the present old flag is still the prettiest, point that out to the school children. Puzzled Voter.

The extra costs to businesses is what is not wanted. The B.B.A. failed to look at the compliance costs to many targeted business. These are the extra costs per annum, (many pay thousands of dollars to comply with regulations), just so they can open their doors each day. Dear Ed, It was a big shock to see on the news about those poor cows and bobby calves being shoved around. If this gets out to the world we can expect big ruptions money wise. Stop it and clean up the situation. It was a big shock to see what they plan to do with the two colleges. What are they going to do with the buildings? Where will they get land close to town as the cost of ferrying them on buses will be expensive? Water restriction should be started well before we really dry out. That raise one thing is the current blatting of souped up, throbbing exhausts by young or in their 20s, hoons. They drive at high speed (estimated 60 to 70 km/hr) down quiet suburban streets, streets with children, cats and dogs. Can the police target them please? They are a menace and clamp down on them before some child is hit. A few mufti police patrols should catch them? James Snodgrass

Banter with Santa It’s that time of year again when Santa saddles up his reindeer and delivers Marlburians joy and presents. Sun reporter Jacob Page talks to the bearded one about the momentous news in and around the province this year. Finally, my big journalistic break interviewing Santa, the one man in December who works his staff harder than Les Whiteside. I was a little nervous interviewing Santa for the first time, like Leon MacDonald, he’s an old man I’ve looked up to since childhood but like a good open side flanker, his hard work is very rarely seen. I was told Santa was in a good mood but when he came in swilling a wine I naturally thought it was Peter Yealands, another delightfully jovial chap with a cracking beard. “Good morning, Peter… I mean, Santa,” I went to shake his hand realising 26 years of waiting for this moment had been thrown away with one incorrect name. Santa laughed it off possibly because of the wine. “It’s better than Skype calls with your MBC principal Wayne Hegarty who thought I was education minister Hekia Parata.” I explained that Wayne was probably still getting over the shock of the new $63 million school the region was promised and it all started to make some kind of awkward sense. I asked Santa what he meant in last year’s ‘5 minutes with’ answers where he said his favourite meal was venison and snow cones. “That’s a tough question,” he says stroking his beard. “It’s a renewable

food source and Mrs Claus gets just the right amount of sear on the meat and I find that all that sleigh pulling makes the meat nice and tender. “The snow cones just wash it down right.” A rather defiant answer I thought but an honest one none the less. “I don’t mean to stir trouble like SAFE or Jamie Arbuckle, it’s just the honest answer,” Santa says. Santa says the thought of finally being able to take a drink of water on his way through Seddon was something he looked forward to. “It’s such a dry run for me out there, so the chance to wet my whistle will be great.” Santa says a personal highlight for him was watching the Givealittle page of former MBC head boy PJ Lupi raise more than $100,000 in less than 48 hours following his scooter accident. “That’s the generosity of Marlburians right there.” Santa, having parked his sleigh in the designated spot behind the Sun building constantly looks over his shoulder as if to check it. He notices Rudolph, his lead reindeer is getting a bit toey. “Oh gosh he says, I thought I had enough money to pay for the parking while I did this, goodness knows why parking isn’t cheaper around here,” he bemoans.

Santa Claus and Rudolph in the reindeer barn at the North Pole. Photo provided by Mrs Claus.

“Maybe we’ll do this interview via Skype next year.” Resigned to the fact Rudolph now has a $65 parking ticket attached to one of his antlers he carries on. “I couldn’t help but notice how many empty wine bottles were stacked up near the bins of Marlborough Lines. “When I called the office and asked for their wish lists all they wanted was paracetamol and several litres of Seddon water to wash it down. “One gentleman rambled they

were enjoying the taste of their new investment and things had gotten a bit out of hand at the Marlborough Lines Christmas Party.” I thanked Santa for that little bit of information and promised I’d call Marlborough Lines managing director, Ken Forrest about that as soon as he left. “It’s good to see Blenheim is set to become the sunniest spot in New Zealand again. “But this place needs rain or the volunteer firefighters are going to continue to be busy.”

That’s very true, Santa. What do Marlburians want most under the tree this year? “Most want gift vouchers for Speights, Supermarkets, McCormicks Jewellers, Lynfords Furniture ....all our wonderful retailers! “As for the kids,” Santa explained. “It’s either Star Wars or Frozen gear. “Maybe I could combine the two with the help of a freezer?” Santa sighs. “When will the kids just let it go?”

Puppies are NOT just for Christmas. Are you prepared for the new arrival?

Puppies love to chew on all sorts of things, it is important to get them their own toys, small stuffed toys or squeaky toys.

Planning and preparation for puppy care, routine, responsibility, exercise and rules are all very important and requires patience.

Remember that you are legally responsible for your dog and you must take all responsible steps to ensure it does not endanger, intimidate, injure or otherwise cause distress to any persons.

Puppies are cute. However they grow very quickly. Dogs generally live for about 11 years – are you prepared for this responsibility!

Puppies continually develop behavioural patterns so socialising is vital, this helps puppies learn acceptable behaviour and gain confidence.

Puppies are adorable – how suitable is your home? This new environment needs to be safe to live, play and explore in.

Feisty penguin released

EcoWorld Aquarium has successfully rehabbed and now released Shazbot the Little Blue Penguin. Shazbot was released into Picton Harbour this week after two months of rehab. “She bit me twice and I knew it was time to let her go”, EcoWorld life science manager Regan Russell says. “The SPCA brought the little blue penguin into us after she was found in a groggy beaten up state lying on the side of the road near Port Underwood. She was pretty stuffed.” Shazbot has become quite a feisty penguin as her health has improved and she has drawn blood on several occasions, the last time being just five minutes before her liberation. “The penguin was not in good shape when it arrived. We weren’t confident she would pull through,” EcoWorld director John Reuhman says. “The team worked very hard at times on Shazbot. We are really pleased she has made it through and been returned to the wild.

It is however not always good news for little blue penguins. “Last week a mauled little blue that had been attacked by a Jack Russell dog in Nga Kuta Bay was brought in to us in a really bad way,” John says. “In spite all our efforts she did not survive the first critical 24 hours and died of her injuries and stress. We were told that the same dog had killed at least one penguin this time last year.” It is understand that DOC is contemplating prosecuting the owner of the Jack Russell and the penguin has been kept frozen as evidence. “It is penguin breeding season, the adults are on their nests, and there are going to be more sad encounters between penguins, humans and their dogs,” John says. If you find a sick or injured Little Blue Penguin please contact your local DOC office or EcoWorld Picton Aquarium for help. Take care, Little Blue Penguins are wild animals and they do bite.

Speechmakers take stage The sixth annual Blenheim Lions Young Speechmaker contest was held at the Bohally Intermediate School Hall on November 15. Seven Year 7 and Year 8 entrants presented their prepared speeches before an audience of family, friends and Blenheim Lions club members. This year Bohally Intermediate School, Renwick School, Fairhall School and Rai Valley Area School were represented. The contestants took the opportunity to express their opinions on a variety of topics ranging from women’s rights, children’s rights to education, man on the moon, buzz for the bees, books versus devices and the health benefits of chocolate. Co judges, Charles Riley and Gwyneth Lowe had the task of finding the place getters. Mr Riley commented on the high standard of the entrants, noting in particular the excellent content of their speeches and the confidence of their delivery. Congratulations to the winners: Samantha Grammer from Bohally Intermediate School in first place, Maddy Croad from Bohally Intermediate School in second place and Izzy Adams from Renwick School third place.

Celebrating 21 years mr green in Marlborough Lawn care Lawn maintenance is essential for keeping your property looking well groomed and tidy. Mr Green’s complete garden care and maintenance services include everything from weeding and hedge trimming through to landscaping and spouting and gutter cleaning. Mr Green can carry out maintenance on sections of any size, and we will remove all green waste from your property.

Cleaning Mr Green home care and commercial cleaning services can help out as much or as little as you require, whether that means regular weekly, fortnightly or monthly visits or just a thorough clean up once or twice a year. We can clean your new home before you move in, or your old home before new tenants move in. Our franchisees are all security checked, wear uniforms, and their work is guaranteed.

Hard work and dedication Is there a secret to a successful business? Reporter Celeste Alexander talks to Mr Green franchise owners for the region, Brian and Dawn Milne about the company’s 21 years in Marlborough, and asks what has contributed to their success. “There’s no real secret, you get out what you put in. “It’s been a lot of hard work but we do it because we love the work, and honestly we wouldn’t change a thing,” Brian says. Mr Green is celebrating 21 years operating in Marlborough and with that Brian and Dawn wish to congratulate their franchisees for their continued hard work and success, and thank their clients for their loyalty. “We have a wonderful franchisees, they really are nice people and very dedicated to the service they offer,” Dawn says. “We also have amazing clients, some of whom have supported us since we first joined Mr Green 14 years ago.” Mr Green Services is a nationwide franchise-based company that was established in 1992, and is 100 percent Kiwi owned and developed. It was first created by a Wellington lawn-

mowing contractor named Tom Trapp who at the time was an independent lawnmowing contractor with one round. He came home after a hard days work covered in grass and his wife advised him he looked like Mr Green. Mr Green was created from that off the cuff comment. Since then Mr Green has grown to include 28 regional owners around the country, including Brian and Dawn who first became franchisees in 1994, then went on to purchase the regional license in 2001. In Marlborough itself, the number of Mr Green franchisees has doubled since Brian and Dawn took over. That proves to them that the Mr Green brand has become not only a respected and trusted household name, but one that has also created business and job opportunities for local families. “This is something we are incredibly proud of. “We have a great sense of achievement and pride to know that we have done this. “From the bottom of our hearts, we want to thank the Marlborough community for supporting us. “Without our wonderful clients, dedicated franchisee owners and staff we wouldn’t be where we are today.”

Celebrating 21 years mr green in Marlborough

From sheep to grass Couple’s journey leads to Mr Green By Celeste Alexander Brian and Dawn had no idea they would end up in Blenheim leading a successful franchise. The couple started out farming in Culverden before going up to the North Island where they were sheep and beef farming. When their children came along they began to shift their focus to a new direction. “I had always been my own boss and preferred to be outdoors, so I was happy to consider anything related,” Brian says. They decided to pack up and move to Blenheim where they felt would provide more opportunities for them and their children. “It was nice to be here and not be worrying each day about the wool market, and just focus on the family,” he says. Brian began working with plants in glass houses for Stefan Browning years ago, something he found really interesting. Four years later an opportunity arose to take on a Mr Green lawnmowing round. “It was good healthy work and I enjoyed being outside. The outdoors became my office and it fitted in well with our family commitments.” When Brian became a franchisee he was one of five. He worked hard at growing his client list and says he rarely ever turned down work. In 2001 the regional franchise license came up for sale, and thanks to a nudge from his brother in law, Brian took the plunge and bought it. “Being business savvy he recognised the potential of own- ing the license and was

talking us into it. “I went home one Sunday and told Dawn to sit down because her brother had something important to say, which was that we should buy it,” he laughs. “At that point our family circumstances had changed and we realised that the timing was right to take this on,” Dawn says. The couple took a business plan to the bank and shared their plans to grow the business by one new franchisee per year, for the first two years. What they hadn’t predicted was how fast that growth would be. “After just two years we had doubled in franchisees, it just took off,” Brian says. But the business growth didn’t stop there. Brian and Dawn attended a biannual conference for Mr Green regional owners and got talking to the regional owners of the Mr Green cleaning franchise of Auckland. “They were really encouraging and insisted we give it a go. We went away unsure if we were ready for that,” Dawn says. It was a phone call from a Yellow Pages salesperson that got the ball rolling. “We had an advert going in for Mr Green but the salesman had done his homework and said ‘I see you do cleaning too. I can offer you a free advert to promote it’,” Dawn says. “We had only talked about it at that point but I impulsively said yes. I told Brian that night and we got the ball rolling straight away. “The 2013 phone book arrived in our letterbox on a Saturday and by Monday morning we had our first phone call and away we went,” she says.

Dawn set out to build a client list, doing a lot of the cleaning work herself before the first franchise was large enough to sell. That first franchise sold in September that year, the second sold in February 2014, the third in November 2014 and another in May of this year. What has contributed to this success was the point of difference offered by Mr Green. “We clean to a very high standard. No cutting corners, no leaving houses in disarray. We pay attention to detail and treat each home like we would our own,” Dawn says. “I am aware that people are paying us from their disposable income, so it would make me incredibly sad if I knew a client had to pay someone else to come in after us. “For me I want the client to walk into their home and tell that we have been in and done a great job. That’s our point of difference,” she says.

Mr Green does it all For both the lawnmowing and cleaning sides of Mr Green, franchisees are required to have all relevant insurances, including Public Liability, and to have been through Police checks. “Security awareness

is big, and we want our clients to know that we are a reputable company that can be trusted in and out of their homes,” Brian says. Today Mr Green has nine lawnmowing franchisees operating throughout the region, and four cleaning

franchisees taking care of clients in both residential and commercial. “We are incredibly proud of the Mr Green brand and what it stands for. “It’s been a lot of work but worth every minute of it.”

The ‘Retreads’ midweek riding group belonging to the Marlborough branch of the Ulysses Club.

Revved for toy run, tinsel and all Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Get ready for the annual Ulysses Christmas Toy Run this Saturday, as members of the Marlborough branch gear up for this much anticipated event. This year marks the sixth Christmas Toy Run where participants meet in Renwick and ride through to Blenheim School. The riders accept donations of Christmas toys which are then donated to the Salvation Army who then distribute them to those in need. Branch spokesperson Murray Brooks says it’s an event the Ulysses members looks forward to every

year, with some even decorating their motorcycles and dressing to the Christmas theme. “It’s a wonderful time of year, everyone is happy and feeling festive. “We all have a lot of fun, many laughs and some members even go through to Nelson and the West Coast to join the club’s other toy runs,” he says. Last year’s toy run attracted a record number of over 100 riders, something Murray would like to beat. “We welcome anyone wanting to join us on their scooters and motorcycles. Vintage, modern...

anything is welcome. “The more interesting the better as we park up at the Blenheim School for the public to visit, look over the bikes and chat with the riders,” he says. Riders meet at the Woodbourne Tavern at 11am and leave for town at 12noon. The public is encouraged to go along to the Blenheim School at 1pm, enjoy a BBQ lunch and donate an unwrapped Christmas toy. Club members will also be selling toy run badges for $10 each with profits going to the Salvation Army.

Ruth enlists granddaughter for winning stocking By Jacob Page A Skype chat and many hours of hard work will most likely see Ruth McCaa’s new sewing machine head across the ditch to be with her nineyear-old granddaughter. Ruth won The Sewing Store Blenheim’s Christmas stocking design competition and with it a new sewing machine. Ruth was more than happy to divert most of the credit to her granddaughter Emerson Payne. “She came up with the design,” Ruth says. “She wanted a very big Santa where you could see all the things he was eating as he was delivering the presents.” Ruth even used a German beer in the hopes of tipping the odds in her favour with German-born owner of The Sewing Store, Lars Hamann. “It was a lot of fun, we often Skype and so she came up with the concept and I made it up. “When I spoke to her and told her we won she didn’t say much but

Ruth McCaa and The Sewing Store co-owner Lars Hamann with Ruth’s winning Christmas stocking and the sewing machine she won.

once we finished our chat she was apparently running around the house in excitement and disbelief. “I’d say (the sewing machine) will be headed to Townsville where she lives,” Ruth says.

Lars says more than 25 entries were received of all shapes and sizes. He says goodie bags would be given to each entrant to ensure no one went home with an empty stocking this Christmas.

Business Association keeps faith in BID By Jacob Page The Blenheim Business Association is vowing to stay together well into 2016 despite CBD retailers and landlords failure to overwhelmingly support the Business Improvement District initiative last month. In an email, the group says they remain committed to helping keep the CBD a priority. The group met last month to dis-

cuss the BID results and decided not to put it to council but still backed the concept. “We will not request the Council to strike a new targeted rate from 1st July 2016. However, the BBA remains committed to the benefits a BID brings to the CBD. “We remain committed to strengthening the BBA as the private sector representative body

for the Blenheim CBD.” The BBA will hold an AGM on February 24 to adopt a modern constitution and elect an executive committee. “We will seek voluntary membership contributions to help fund the BBA to operate effectively. “We will review the opportunity of requesting another BID poll within the next two years.”

Seddon’s water network inspected A handful of water waste points have been located in Seddon’s water supply during a recent inspection of the township’s network. Eight likely leaks, losing an estimated 29.5 litres of water per minute, were located by contractors using specialist equipment. “The biggest sources of wasted water were not so much leaks as taps discovered turned on; one at the sports ground and another at an unoccupied property. Between

them they accounted for 70 per cent of the waste so it was easily dealt with,” says Council’s operations and maintenance engineer Stephen Rooney. A similar inspection at Renwick in October discovered 30 leaks in the township’s network with an estimated 207 litres of water being lost each minute. In Seddon, one irrigation leak was located on a private property and the other leaks were all very

small, all less than a litre a minute, and all were being repaired, said Mr Rooney. He said Seddon’s water supply network dated back to the 1930s/40s so, given its age, there were relatively few problems. “Nevertheless, we’re asking everyone everywhere to get the message about careful water use this summer so it would be helpful if everyone took responsibility to turn taps off.”
