Man in the background gets deserved recognition Continued from page 1 Mike says he left after three years because “back in those days that was all that was needed” and became a butcher at the request of his mother who thought one of her boys needed a trade. “I did it and thought I’d only be here four years – that was the plan but I’ve been here ever since.” Mike says he liked to think of himself as a cog in the fundraising wheel.

“I’m very much the guy in the background and I’m sure there are people out there doing it who are more deserving than me. “I spend too much time working here so I don’t have the chance to be out there, but I like to help those people that are out there actively doing it – the ones who are at the games selling the raffles or cooking the sausages. “I don’t feel like the Old Boys’ Association asks for

much but they make whatever they get work.” Head of the Old Boys Association Ross Anderson says Mike’s generosity over many years has helped hundreds of children and young adults are able to afford opportunities and reach their full potential. “Mike may give us $10 worth of sausages for example but we can then turn that into $40 worth of fundraising for a sports team or individual. “While it’s not cash, it’s prod-

uct that we can make plenty of money from and we really appreciate that.” Mike says while the prospect of a new combined college site is exciting he loved the main building on the MBC ground. “I think the Association has a key role to play in keeping the history relevant when the move comes.” Ross says Mike’s contributions are not just limited to MBC and his community spirit knows no limits.

Christmas tree lights up Forum By Jacob Page Blenheim’s new eight-metre high Christmas tree has been erected in The Forum. Councillors opted for an eightmetre high tree imported from China, costed at just over $54,000 including its installation. Given the 15-year expected lifespan, most councillors at the time agreed that the cost was reasonable to ensure that downtown Blenheim had a Christmas centrepiece. A locally-produced alternative was ruled out as it was more expensive.

A 10-metre tree from Cuddons, which would have been built in Blenheim, would have cost $93,000. It is the first time Blenheim has had a Christmas tree in the CBD in six years. The workers drew quite a crowd as they erected the tree with a cherry picker needed for some of the higher points. Potential school sites emerge on the quiet By Jacob Page The Ministry of Education remains tight lipped over the new $63 million combined site for both Marlborough Boys’ and Marlborough Girls’ College. However, the Sun understands the Council has been asked to look into the possibility of several sites which will be the home of both colleges by 2021. It is understood an area on Battys Road which is currently in grapes is the first priority, while the Waterlea Racecourse and Pollard Park’s Blenheim Golf Club is another option while Woodbourne provides a third. A potential issue with Pollard

Hekia Parata.

Park is it is currently listed as reserve land. The MDC would not comment on the matter while the MOE

says it will not comment on any proposed individual site for “commercial sensitivity reasons”. Head of Education Intrastructure Service, Kim Shannon says the process of finding a new site will need a lot of consultation. “When we look at potential sites to build schools on, we use specialists to identify sites suitable for educational use. “Criteria include size, shape, topography, environmental conditions and potential hazards, issues of cultural significance, transport networks, price and current use. “We will work closely with both Marlborough Boys’ and Girls’ Colleges in identifying what site

factors are important to them to help deliver the curriculum. “Once a preferred site is identified we negotiate with the landowner. Price is determined using an independent valuation based on current market value, and negotiations between the parties. “Then we arrange for the site to be designated for education purposes. “We don’t comment on potential sites while we are in the process of identifying and acquiring them, as this information is commercially sensitive. However, we do involve the schools, the local council, iwi and other key stakeholders as part of this process.”

Another large fire set to last for days Another forestry fire broke out in Marlborough yesterday that is expected to take several days to get under control. The fire is midway up the Wairau Valley a few kilometres from the Wairau Valley township. The fire is burning in commercial forestry land owned by Nelson Forests Ltd., on the south side of SH 63, well away from any residential settlement. About 40 rural fire crew from around Marlborough are fighting the fire and further support has been called from Canterbury, West Coast and Nelson. Ten helicopters have been summoned to the scene of the fire which is burning across steep terrain, the fire moving steadily up the slopes fanned by light winds. Incident controller John Foley says conditions are not as bad as they were

for Marlborough’s recent Waikakaho Valley fire but the forecast is for rising westerly winds. John says the fire could take up to four days to bring under control. He described it as “another hard slog for firefighters. The alarm was raised shortly before noon yesterday. The cause of Marlborough’s recent Waikakaho Valley forest fire, about 35 km to the north of this latest outbreak, is still the subject of investigation. The public is asked to be aware that fire vehicles and heavy water tankers are moving through Wairau Valley township. Parson’s Road at the intersection with SH 63 is being closed to the public. Residents still have access to their properties.

Blenheim’s Elim Church has cancelled its annual Christmas lunch. The event had been a regular fixture for more than two decades but it had lost its Christmas feel as some people came with a sense of entitlement.

By Jacob Page ANZ Blenheim is getting behind Active Dads Marlborough thanks to a staff member who knows the benefit of the organisation. The $500 donation is set to pay for visits to the Stadium 2000 pools for the next two years. Active Dads Marlborough coordinator Jodie Griffiths says donations from the private sector are rare but greatly appreciated, especially from a local branch of a national company. “We run free regular events for dads to hang out with their children and other dads. “We encourage them to get out and enjoy all that we have to offer in the region.

“It’s about ensuring dads don’t start their relationship with their kids when they are playing footy but are in the pool with them at six months old. Jodie says in the four years since Barnardos started Active Dads; they’ve helped more than 2000 dads. ANZ Bank’s Jamie Norton has been going with his two-year-old daughter, Sophie to their events since she was four months old. “It’s fair to say I’ve been campaigning for Active Dads to get this money,” Jamie says. “I see the work they do and they give the opportunity for fathers to spend time with their kids without the hassle of having to organise the time.

Active Dad, Jamie Norton, Active Dads Marlborough coordinator Jodie Griffiths and ANZ Blenheim branch manager Hiram Taylor with $500 from the bank which will be given to the organisation.

“They take the stress out of it.” ANZ Blenheim branch manager, Hiram Taylor says it’s nice to give money to a local organisa-

tion that staff are part of. Jodie says the money will be vital over the next couple of years.

Snaps and beauty Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Beauty and photography are two passions of Lisa Lee who has combined the two in her new business venture Sounds Beautiful Studio. The studio held its grand opening on November 14. Located on Auckland Street in Picton, Lisa’s studio is divided between massage, beauty and photography. Her photography studio is set up with a number of backdrops, props and themes for all ages and is also where she hosts her boudoir parties, an initiative she hopes will prove popular with the ladies. “These are a lot of fun, especially for hens parties and birthdays. Bring your own outfits or choose from my boudoir wardrobe.

Lisa Lee recently opened her Sounds Beautiful Studio in Picton.

“You can be as sexy or conservative as you like, but ultimately it’s about having a blast and leaving feeling spectacular,” she says.

Lisa’s experience as a wedding photographer in the Cook Islands is also something she will be including in her business. “Weddings, special events,

baby and family photography... it’s all things I love to do so this is an area of the business I will be growing,” she says. Opening her own business has been a goal of Lisa’s who returned to the region after two years living in the Cook Islands. Originally she lived in Blenheim with her parents who first started the Marlborough Wildlife Park on Foxes Island Road. “Growing up around wild life was interesting. I was living with lions and tigers right outside my bedroom window before the big floods in the 80’s came along and someone else took over the park. “I think my father’s adventurous nature has always been a part of me, but now back in Marlborough I have set down roots and launching a business doing what I really love,” she says.

COUNCIL NEWS Notices

Destination Marlborough

Temporary Road Closure

Chairman of Destination Marlborough Trust Inc Nigel Gould says Destination Marlborough is financially ‘match fit’ and in good shape to concentrate on its main focus of getting this region widely profiled and onto travellers’ itineraries. “We’ve built great relationships with other regional tourist organisations, with the airlines and the tour operators as well as Tourism New Zealand and that’s paying off with increasing awareness and excitement about what Marlborough has to offer.” As an example, he said, Marlborough has had huge exposure as a holiday destination after a visit from China’s top-rating reality TV star with photos and descriptions of our region still circulating in Chinese social media. “It was the equivalent hit for the region as a $24 million advertising campaign – which is way beyond this region’s budget. That kind of marketing doesn’t happen by accident and we have

Time limits on parking at Clubs and Queen Street car parks Time restrictions have been imposed at two Blenheim CBD car parks where people have been occupying the parking spaces all day. Parking charges are structured to encourage turnover where there is a high demand for parking space. Both the parking areas outside the Clubs of Marlborough and next to Liz Davidson Park in Queen Street are pay-and-display car parks that were previously not time-restricted. Changes have been made at both car parks: • Clubs of Marlborough - $1.00 per hour with a maximum stay of 4 hours. • Queen Street - $1.00 per hour with a maximum stay of 4 hours. Find your water toby on smart maps One of the most common inquiries to Council is about water supply – where to find that water tap or toby which turns off the water supply to a property. Never a day goes by without at least one phone call from a householder with a plumbing problem needing to know how to turn off their water. Council’s latest Smart Map Find My Water Toby is the quick and easy solution – the map shows the water line to each property and indicates where the water toby is located. This is generally near the roadside boundary and can either be just inside or outside

the property. Click on the blue line to your property to get the details. Note that most newer houses also have their own water toby, generally close to the house. It’s worth taking a moment to make sure you know where your Council water toby is found; far easier to find out now rather than wait for a plumbing emergency. The toby may be a round tap or a lever, with a small black circular lid or rectangular black plastic lid. Check that the toby is not rusted or seized up and not covered by vegetation. The toby is Council’s property while the

Positive ageing Christmas is on the way – the time of year when it’s so easy to blow the budget. Most people want to forget about belt-tightening this month but a careful approach to the festive season can avoid a debt-laden new year. It’s wise to approach Christmas with a budget. The Sun Water Conservation I hear you. Our neighbour frequently waters our cars, footpath, driveway. I have given up asking her to stop. 4 years now. Leaves sprinkler running for 8 hrs. Argh!

Indeed Spotlight plus numerous others in Blenheim. The council here is very small minded, whoever is in authority over these things? No traffic lights, no wheelie bins for rubbish etc, ridiculous parking charges. Shall we go on? THEN they wonder why town is EMPTY! What would be good would be council not doing the usual cautious hold off. They ought to study towns-centres that are thriving and learn why? What are they doing that we are not?

Do the decent thing

Warehouse alarm I agree about Warehouse alarm going off. Made me wonder for awhile. Now take no notice “not guilty”. Felt SO sorry for a lady last week, could tell by her face she innocent. Trying to say to attendant she didn’t know why it went off. Attendant saying “have you got any of our garments on?” Suppose she had to go and be searched. How embarrassing. Just Not Right. Get it fixed.

Historical water sense

On the 27th Friday night down Parker St around 8 pm my dog was hit by a car. Now I take full responsibility for my dog being on the road, but the person who hit him didn’t even have the decency to stop and make sure he was ok. It really is the decent thing to do when you hit an animal. It’s awful to hit a dog I have done it myself. I did the right thing and picked the dog up, found where he lived and took him home to his very grateful owners. You’re obviously not a decent person. If it had of been a child would you have stopped ? Annoyed dog owner.

Was it not Mayor Tom Harrison who previously stated that the Renwick residents rights to water come first as ratepayers? Wairau Valley boring Oh how the mighty political grape has There are kids here who have nothing to do, changed our rights. no shops, just a pub. Hopefully our new MP will support us. Very boring for the kids, and neighbours wonder why the kids get into trouble.

Take Old Renwick Road Those who want to go 7O kph on the open road between Renwick and Blenheim should What’s the story? go on Old Renwick Rd, that way they would There has to be a story behind a young man only be 1O kph below the speed limit and not walking down Maxwell Road at 8.15am on hold so many people up behind them. Sunday 6th Dec in a blue dressing gown, sun hat, bare legs and feet.

Emergency dept Reply to lead Scott St nurse Alison Bond re emergency dept and children. People go there because they can’t afford doctors or doctors are closed when you need them. If your consulting rooms don’t have adequate times for people, they’ve got to do something....again high prices come into play.

Dangerous crossings Those pedestrian crossings near roundabouts opposite Seymour Square are dangerous for cars and those people crossing. Cars backed up through a roundabout.

txt talk of the week

Wine taken to cruise ships In response to the txt concerning the info that wine purchased by cruise passengers cannot be taken on board is not entirely correct. Friends of mine took six bottles onto the ship last week. Two bottles to the cabin and the rest held by the ship till the night before landing in Aus. They had been told by the tour guide that wine couldn’t be taken on board. Maybe it depends on the cruise company.

Good night out Great evening out at Allan Scott Restaurant last weekend, fabulous meal, fantastic service from the lovely Charmaine! Happy diner.

Fast Food? LOL

Why are there so many cranky people at xmas time. We get 364 days to shop for xmas, but some leave it to the last moment, then wonder why shops don’t have what they want.......

Good to see a Christmas tree in The Forum. I wish it had been made locally, but it’s a nice addition this time of year.

Too hot for dogs

I agree, leave the building for carparking. When the new ASB Theatre is completed, nearby parking will be in demand when a show etc is on... parking at The Clubs of Marlborough - no empty parks to be had there.

LocaLLy owned, nationaLLy Known Auto Super Shoppe Blenheim

The Auto Super Shoppe team. Jim and Dorothy Hasseldine with technicians Grant, Jason, Clive and Jason.

Owners Dorothy and Jim Hasseldine.

New name delivering same trusted service Formerly Topp Motors, Auto Super Shoppe continues after 40 years in Blenheim By Celeste Lodewyk When Jim Hasseldine first fell in love with cars, he was barely tall enough to see over the bonnet and that passion has never changed. Today he spends his time helping customers, trouble shooting with his staff and still can be seen getting his hands dirty. Jim, together with his wife Dorothy own and operate their business Auto Super Shoppe Blenheim, located on Houldsworth Street behind Horton Park. The busy repair and service shop is bustling with activity on a daily basis, and has been for 40 years since first opening as Topp Motors in 1975. Topp Motors began with Ian and Ann Topp. Ian had wanted to set down business roots for himself and with his background in British and European vehicles, he forged a well

known name in Blenheim. In April 1987 Jim came into the business as an A Grade Mechanic, which evolved into that of an Automotive Technician. This was a role he relished as he too shared an interest in British and European cars. Then in 2001 the opportunity arose for Jim and Dorothy to take over the business when Ian and Ann retired. “I guess you could say it was a goal of ours to have our own business, but at the time the reality was that Topp Motors had a very good reputation and it felt right to get into the drivers seat,” Jim says. The business continued under its original name up until recently. Just under three years ago Topp Motors became part of the Auto Super Shoppe network, a brand with over 90 workshops

throughout New Zealand. “Recently we changed our name to Auto Super Shoppe Blenheim as we wanted to raise our profile here in Blenheim. “It has become a well known brand and one recognised nationwide, so for us it was a good move,” Jim says. Today the business continues to provide a one-stop-service for any issue customers may experience. “Our bottom line is that we set out to solve people’s problems.” Auto Super Shoppe Blenheim continues to be well known for its work on British and European cars, as well as being a Kia parts and service agent. The workshop is fully equipped with comprehensive diagnostic equipment including six scan tools.

“Because technology is evolving at a really fast rate, we have always had a policy to evolve with it. “We are constantly upgrading and training to keep up with the latest trends which is one of the main reasons we are still here today,” Jim says. Jim and his team of technicians, the two Jasons, Clive and Grant are hugely versatile in the range of vehicles they service, from vintage Bentleys to modern Porches and Maseratis. Their skills enable them to not only service vehicles but to also deal with electrical and safety issues, SRS airbag systems, ABS brake systems and engine management. Call in and see Jim and his team to find out what they can do for you. For pEAcE oF Mind HolidAy Motoring, SEE

Q A Q A Q A

What meal do you never get sick of eating? Anything Asian.

One of my best holidays was... Spending time at the Pakawau Holiday Camp with friends a few years ago. A beautiful spot removed from the pressures and bustle of life. My guilty TV pleasure is... The Chase – I enjoy quizzes.

Q A Q A Q A

What would you change about the world? Get people to respect each other and life itself. As with the current situation, too many people are convinced that their belief is the only one there can be. What’s one thing that you’ll never throw away? Things, be they physical or emotional, that inspire good memories. Who would you love to have a meal with? Sam Elliott the actor. His persona is such that I think some interesting conversation could flow.

Q A Q A Q A

The best thing in your life right now? Where I am at at the moment. Life is good, I really enjoy working, my oldest son is getting married at Christmas time and our grandsons will be with us for Christmas. Good memories. What is the one thing Sun readers would be surprised to know about you? That I am an avid proponent of Organ donation. As fate had it, I was lucky enough to be the recipient of an organ (heart) transplant 18 years ago. What’s next on your wishlist? To spend as much quality time with family and friends as I am able (hopefully plenty!)

Dancers earn trophy haul By Jacob Page Blenheim’s Annies Dance Studio had the tough task of trying to fit in 14 trophies to bring home from the World Salsa Solo Championships in Brisbane. The 11-strong team called Dance NZ competed in individual and team events and many of them defended their titles Director Vicki Bendell says many of the girls aged 10 to 14-years-old created their own choreography for their routines. “It’s been nine months of preparation for these girls and they’ve all had to qualify for the event in Christchurch earlier in the year so it’s been a long road. “It’s hard to pack them on the plane. “I put my clothes in with my daughter’s case and

then we had to try to wrap them properly. Vicki says she is looking at a world salsa event in Miami, Florida next year. “The girls work hard, train hard and really look forward to those international events. The group also competed at an event in Auckland on the way home. Vicki says any child is welcome to try dance but she believes it takes six months of dancing to see progress. “It’s a real privilege to watch the kids train hard and see the improvements day-to-day. RIGHT: Annies Dance Studio trophy winners from their Brisbane event. They are (back left) Rose Church, 12, Anna Grant, 12, Kristina Gibbs, 14, Lucy Bendell, 13, Tiarna Nukunuku, 12, Abbey Sullivan 12 and Sophia Bendell 14.

A group of volunteer drivers are raising money thanks to Blenheim Toyota.

Funding drive A team of volunteers have been giving their time as drivers to raise money for the Marlborough College Old Boys’ Association thanks to Blenheim Toyota. Blenheim Toyota prepares all summer rental fleets to be delivered to Picton, and it’s these volunteers who drive them there. In return the Association is paid, creating essential funds for the

Marlborough Boys’ College. This is the fourth year the fundraising initiative has been held which will see a total of 450 cars are being driven to Picton over three months, ending December 20. Last year alone the Association collected $9000. For Blenheim Toyota CEO Scott McDermid it’s a great partnership that benefits many.

“We were looking to provide a scholarship but we felt it would be more feasible to give a monetary contribution, so this is where the fleet driving came into it. “It’s a win win for us. They are doing a service for us and the money we give them goes back into the college,” he says. The team of volunteers is coordinated by Jill Adams.

Artist Richard Adams will be hosting a workshop in Blenheim February 2016. Photo provided.

Unravel the painting process For painters wanting to explore the layers of abstract art a two day workshop will be held in February of next year. The workshop is being offered through the Marlborough Art Society (MAS), which will be held on February 20 and 21 by renowned artist Richard Adams. Titled ‘Elements of Surprise within the Abstract Painting Workshop’, Richard says the focus will be to unravel the painting process by focusing on the underpainting. “It’s really about the layers that go before the final layer, bringing it to life,” he says. “Whether the artist is painting a landscape, abstract or a vase there are three elements working together; foreground, midground and background.” Richard also plans to share the stories of famous artists who have struggled, found their niche and become successful.

“Some of the most famous artists found their ‘marks’ by accident, while others work for years to find it. “I simply want to help people find their mark, whether it be in abstract or not. This workshop is not confined to just abstract, any stage you are at I will work with you,” he says. Those participating in the workshop will paint primarily on 420g sheets of art paper, and Richard welcomes all levels to attend. This will be Richard’s first workshop in Blenheim as he is based in Auckland and spends time traveling. One of his recent trips was to Winchester College in the city of Winchester where he spent two months as the resident painter. For more information or to register for Richard’s workshop, contact Helen Ballinger at workshops@ marlboroughartsociety.com or phone 02102678711.

Fury-ous response to comments Heavyweight boxing needed publicity but the type new world champion Tyson Fury is dishing out is not needed. There has not been a captivating heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis a decade ago and while Fury may have the attention of the masses, it is for all the wrong reasons. However, fellow Brit Fury has wasted little time with his new public profile in angering the masses with his comments following his points decision win over Wladimir Klitschko in the heavyweight title fight on November 28. His comments about women, homosexuality and his fellow sports stars have angered many

globally and have him the subject of a “hate crime” investigation. Before the Klitschko fight, Fury also ranted about abortion, and said doping should be legalised in all sports to make it “fully fair.” In the past week, he has been quoted as saying Olympic heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis-Hill “slaps up good,” before adding that “a woman’s best place is in the kitchen and on her back”. Fury is of Irish-Gypsy heritage - he calls himself “Gypsy King” on Twitter - and comes from a bloodline of bare-knuckle champions. He says he is the most charismatic boxer since Muhammad Ali, He must be getting the words

controversial and charismatic confused. Just in case you’re wondering, he does have a wife who is currently pregnant, so she must be fine with his views on these topics including her gender. Boxing is a sport based largely on spoken hyperbole pre fight but Fury’s comments are totally unacceptable. What it will do is have people wanting to see him get knocked out at some point, so in a sport where fact often meets fiction and things are said to draw money, maybe this is all part of his plan to set himself up financially while he is on top of the world.
