Fire now contained Richard McNamara.

By Jacob Page A visibly tired Marlborough Kaikoura Rural Fire Authority principal rural fire officer Richard McNamara, was still able to look on the bright side of the biggest fire Marlborough had seen in 15 years. “No one was injured, no one is in the burn unit at Burwood Hospital, no homes were destroyed and no lives were lost,” Richard says on the day his men and women brought the Wairau Valley fire under control. It had burned through more than 1250 hectares of forest and was contained on Monday. “I don’t care how many trees get burnt as long as nobody gets hurt or killed.

The night sky was brought into the light as the fire intensified.

Fire fighters and residents praised in face of fire Continued from page 1 McNama ra says Marlborough is fortunate to have quality fire crews and he praised their efforts. “Our fire fighters include very experienced pilots, very good earth moving people as well as rural and urban crews as well as forestry crews. “They’ve been magnificent. “That fire didn’t run out of fuel, it was pulled up by a tremendous amount of work. “It cost a lot of money, I’d say somewhere in the vicinity of $2 million but we also saved a lot of land because that fire never ran out of energy. “That sounds like a lot of money but it’s not when you

“I think I could have sold a scone for $5 each they were so popular.” Richard urged the people of Marlborough to educate their loved ones who may be coming to the region as well as tourists about the fire danger over the holiday period. “The majority of fire incidents are started by people who do silly things with barbecues, rubbish piles etc. “This is Marlborough, we have a high risk, people need to respect that this isn’t the West Coast.” He also urged people who run and walk in the Wither Hills to not go too high and stay out of the area during the heat of the day.

Air force Dad to make daughter proud inbriefThe Sun By Jacob Page Former Marlborough Boys’ College pupil Te Manihera WineeraWalker made his two-year-old daughter proud last week. The 24-year-old aircraftman was a recruit course graduate at the RNZAF Base Woodbourne ceremony yesterday. Te Manihera admits he was not at MBC as often as he should have been but with the support of family enrolled in the air force in April. Te Manihera Wineera-Walker

“I wanted to do something positive with my life,” he says. “I have a daughter who is two and I wanted to make sure I was someone she could look up to and be proud of.” He says he enjoyed being able to be paid to keep fit as well as the structure and routine. “I got very good at ironing and learnt how to sew. “I thought I knew a lot about the air force but I didn’t know anything.”

“The good thing is that we are kept very busy. Te Manihera had been working in construction and training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu prior to joining the air force. “As a trade I’m changing from a fire fighter to force protection because they do air and ground security and protect the planes when they deploy.” He was also looking forward to getting in touch with his Maori roots.

Meeting to seek forestry assurance

Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman and Principal Rural Fire Officer Richard McNamara will meet separately with Council’s forestry managers to discuss the management of Council-owned forestry production sites as the region confronts the driest conditions on record. Mayor Alistair Sowman says Council wants an assurance that the management of its forestry is an exemplar for the industry. “In this summer’s conditions where the risk is extreme, safety must be the first consideration – for the sake of the logging gangs and for the fire crews as well as for neighbouring property owners.” Mr McNamara says the industry in Marlborough and Nelson has had a fire risk reduction strategy in place for the last 15 years and that is kept under review.

Ohau waterfall track closed The Ohau Waterfall Stream track north of Kaikoura has been closed temporarily due to seal breeding activity in the area. The track is popular because fur seal pups can often be viewed at the waterfall or in the stream, usually from May to October.

War time medal worth the wait By Paula Hulburt For more than half a century, former air force man Peter Sangwine has looked back on his time in service with fond memories. Today, he easily recalls the cloudless, azure skies of Cyprus, the scent of citrus fruit in the air and the breath taking views across the Mediterranean. Now 53 years after he served as part of a peace keeping force on the island, his work has been officially recognised with a special medal. Wing Commander Mike Salvadore, Base Commander at Woodbourne, presented the medal to Peter in front of air training cadets from 27th Squadron. As a former air cadet himself, Peter says he was humbled by the experience. “I’m very honoured and grateful to the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) for presenting me with this medal in front of the squadron.

“The congratulations I got from the cadets themselves was touching” Peter arrived in New Zealand on January 12 1966, travelling overseas on a 350 British Pounds ticket through the Panama Canal. But he was so entranced with Marlborough that he decided to stay. As the current treasurer of Air Training Corp (ATC) 27th Squadron, Peter says he will never forget his time in Cyprus and was grateful to share a small glimpse into his experiences there. He revealed some of his fondest memories are of his time on the island and the people he met there. He says: “I loved Cyprus and to begin with it was an easy going life. I can still picture the huge baskets of citrus fruits, piled so high you needed a ladder to get to them. “There was a great sense of camaraderie and although I’ve lost

contact with people over the years, they will never really leave me.” Peter’s father, William, was in the Merchant Navy. He followed his father’s footsteps into a military career and served as a storeman. While in Cyprus he was responsible for fuelling up planes and ensuring supply of aviation fuel. During the uprising in 1962, he was one of a team tasked with peace keeping duties after unrest flared up between the Greeks and Cypriots. After leaving the military in 1967, he kept close links with the air force and joined the committee at Woodbourne when his step son, Jason Pilar, was an air cadet. He says he will always be grateful for the medal he received. “After all this time it is very touching to get this. It means the world to me.” RIGHT: Peter Sangwine.

Renwick praised as Chilean Needle Grass water levels stabilise spreads

www.EasternStatesSpeedway.NET.nz

Despite a little rain bringing some light relief to northern and inland areas of Marlborough in the last week, the district is still very dry. Between 10 and 15 mm has fallen in the upper Wairau River catchment and 4 to 5 mm on the plains. Blenheim is still on track to break the record for the lowest ever annual rainfall. Careful water use by Renwick residents is helping to delay the arrival of summer water restrictions there. Rainfall over the last week has been enough to bring a very slight lift to most rivers, further delaying the onset of more widespread restrictions. At this stage the only restriction on irrigation takes are for the less reliable class B and C take, which is not unexpected for this time in a dry year. Low groundwater levels are continuing to recede rapidly due to the low Wairau River recharge rates. Well levels, which until now had been running slightly above 2014 levels, are now as low as they were a year ago. The Wairau Aquifer is reaching lows not usually seen until later in the season and the Riverlands Aquifer is also a cause for concern.

The Rarangi Shallow Aquifer and the deep Southern Valleys Aquifers are faring a little better, still higher than last year’s levels. Renwick residents have been so careful about their water use that restrictions may not be necessary before Christmas. The water level at Renwick’s bore field has been steady at 1000 mm above the pumps for the last week. The small amount of rain in the Wairau River catchment over the last few days, and the water saving effort by the Renwick community, has helped to slow down the rate of decline of the aquifer in Terrace Road. If the daily demand stays below 2,500 cubic metres per day, it may stave off water restrictions for at least another couple of weeks. Other water supplies (Picton, Havelock, Wairau Valley and Blenheim) are looking healthy at present but these communities should also be following good water use practices to ensure the situation doesn’t deteriorate; there isn’t much prospect of decent rainfall in the coming weeks.

One of Marlborough’s most serious pests, Chilean Needle Grass, has been found in an area of Blenheim where the public has easy access, prompting a call for people to be aware how easily it can be spread. Chilean Needle Grass is a problem for pastoral farmers particularly on Marlborough’s east coast but late last year, an infestation was found within the Wither Hills Farm Park. Now Council’s biosecurity staff have identified two more small patches, with the help of the public, within the Taylor River Reserve, upstream of Wither Road. The areas are now fenced off and are being treated. Chilean Needle Grass appearing closer to Dog owners are asked to keep their animals urban areas. out of the enclosed area to minimise the risk found this growing somewhere else on the of further spread. The seeds of Chilean Needle Grass spread walkway and be sure to destroy the seeds very easily as they can cling to footwear and by crushing or burning if your dog gets any of them caught in paws or fur,” says Council animal pelts. People walking on the river reserve can help Biosecurity officer Jono Underwood. Key features when looking for Chilean ensure they’re not carrying seeds by checking Needle Grass include purple-tinge ‘spikey’ their footwear and the coats of their dogs. The public is asked to call Council if they seed heads, sharp angular plants – not soft and droopy, lime-green colour and distincfind further signs of the needle grass. “Take a photo of the spot and contact us, tive collar between the main seed head and or drop in a seed sample if you think you’ve spiralled tail.

Mark Elkington Blenheim

We will be gathering with family and making sure the kids don’t get too spoilt.

My plan for Christmas is to spend good time with my family, enjoying all that Christmas brings like the pleasures of giving, feasting and recollecting fond memories of past Christmases, and hoping there’s many more to come.

While I’m sometimes working parts of the Christmas and New Year period, on Christmas Day my wife and I generally make time to catch up with family, have a barbeque or Christmas style meal and spend time together.

I am lucky because my wife Tessa is the ‘Queen of Christmas’ and has everything organised by about Easter. We will have our four boys home with us, which is the best Christmas present of all and will be heading to the Marlborough Sounds.

A Christmas day tradition involves fruit berries with sparkling wine, ham on toast then later a long lunch in the afternoon. However this year we will be visiting a new grandchild and having a Christmas meal at a restaurant for the first time.

Charities

Theatre traffic Doggy doos

Dear Ed, Why does a certain charity ask for childrens gifts but not to donate cuddly toys? I understand that some cuddly toys may be past their best but those could be put to one side. Folks donate what they have and to stipulate that certain items are not wanted angers me somewhat. On this vein - I was in Pollard Park, for the Christmas in the Park Concert, when donations of money was asked for,.. ‘we would, of course, prefer paper money’!!! WHAT!... please, please peeps, do not presume that everyone can spare ‘paper’ money and some may feel uncomfortable putting in a few coins of a silver colour. Instead please ask for, ‘whatever you can spare would be gratefully received’ next year. Happy Christmas to everyone. Maggie Walker

Dear Ed, Coming from the roundabout into Hutcheson Street and then turning into the Clubs of Marlborough carpark, with the hulk of the theatre looming just 30 metres away, is now a traffic hazard. Cars travelling 40-50 km/hour coming along Hutcheson Street are suddenly upon you. The obtruding corner of the theatre hinders vision. The question is irrespective of the merits of getting a new $30 million theatre, about the siting. The theatre should not be there. There were far better sites. What short-sighted planner or staff recommended that? Councillor Bagge pointed (painted?) out the folly by her marks on the ground before the theatre was built. Questions. Does the theatre occupy public road? Who recommended it? What was wrong with the councillors apart from councillors like Ms Bagge who saw the stupidity? Will council accept responsibility for any accidents? Meanwhile whispers are all is not well inside the theatre with construction. Archie Legato

Dear Ed, I cannot get over the number of tradesmen who take their dogs onto worksites these days. I have seen dogs roaming and fouling peoples properties while I have been out walking. My neighbour had a tradesman working at her place while she was out and came home to find that his dog had done it’s business on her lawn. What is it with these men, are they too lazy to walk their dogs, or would they prefer to let someone else clean up their dogs doo. “Take it home”

New era for motorcycle business Marlborough Trials Centre buys Peter Grinter Motorcycles and merges Story and photos by Celeste Lodewyk Two well established motorcycle businesses have become one under a new name - Marlborough Motorcycles. Brendon Wadsworth, owner of Marlborough Trials Centre has purchased Peter Grinter Motorcycles and is rolling the two into one brand new business venture. Brendon says he came to the point in business where he had to consider growing or downsizing. “The only way to grow it was to take on another franchise, and the best one for Marlborough was Kawasaki. “I went to Peter and asked if he was interested in selling the business to me and it all went from there. It’s been good to obtain Kawasaki and attach it to CanAm as the business now covers everything from motocross and trials bikes through to road

bikes and jet skis,” he says. The decision to sell did not come lightly for Peter Grinter, who has had his Kawasaki dealership for 33 years, but it’s a move he feels has been beneficial to all. “There have been a lot of great times with Peter Grinter Motorcycles, and I am hugely grateful to the role my wife Barbara has played in it, but moving foward this is the start of an exciting new era. “For everyone involved having both under one roof makes a lot of sense. “Personally it keeps me involved in the industry, but still frees me up to spend time on other things,” he says. Peter will continue working for the business four days a week, overseeing the workshop and its staff as well as being on hand to meet with customers. What was the Marlborough Trials Centre

showroom has now been through renovations and an extension to create a brand new look for the business. Outside the building has had a new glass frontage added, and internally the showroom has been opened up to create more space for motorcycle displays. Out the back is a large four bay workshop that is equipped to service mules, ATV’s and roadbikes. This will all be on display this Saturday at Marlborough Motorcycle’s grand opening event. The showroom and workshop will be open to the public to take a tour and meet the team from 10am - 2pm. Marlborough’s Dan Moore will be back for another crack at the GODZone adventure race in April.

Team work is key to get through 520km of rugged endurance racing.

In the adventure zone Spare a thought for Dan Moore as you tuck into your Christmas tucker this year. The 35 year old Marlburian will be in training for next year’s 520km GODZone adventure race around the top of the South Island. Dan talks to Sun reporter Jacob Page about training while being a new father, determination to return from a knee injury and why he puts his body through it. Dan Moore’s third time in the GODZone adventure race in Kaiteriteri from April 2 to April 9 could be his most demanding. The 35-year-old says being able to train in Marlborough’s, challenging and unique terrain for a physically and mentally demanding 520km non-stop adventure race is an asset but can’t always prepare you for what lies ahead. “It can become a serious mental game at times – like one foot in front of the other.” Moore will be part of a new four-person team called Team Yealands in 2016 for his third tilt at the event. He finished third in the race two years ago with fellow Marlburian Jeremy Mackenzie but had to pull out of the 2015 event with a serious knee injury. “There’s a part of me that is using the injury as a motivator,” he says. “I felt like I let the team down by having to pull out, so it’s redemption of sorts.” The team grabbed the final podium spot

two years ago in four days six hours and 18 minutes after doing 267km of mountainbiking, 114km of trekking, 101km of canoeing, 38km of kayaking and 9km of “coasteering” around Kaikoura and beyond. Dan says his earlier years based in the Wanganui hunting, tramping and farming all kept him in good shape but it was his adventurous spirit that kept him coming back for more adventure race punishment. For me it’s an adventure in some really beautiful parts of my own country. “The fact the race is held on a different course each year is a big bonus.” Dan says while 35 may seem old for many top-level sports, it’s almost the perfect age for endurance events. “The body is still in really good shape and I think in your mid-30s and beyond you’re able to handle the mental pressures better than some of the younger guys. “You can make up time not only with fitness

and speed but strategy and course navigation. “When you hit that mental wall you have to be able to keep going.” Dan says he often does day training and prepares at all times of the day and night to simulate race conditions. He says sleep can be a blessing and a curse. “Sometimes sleep is the best option,” he says. “You may not be moving forward physically but sometimes having a sleep is the best option because your body rests and your times will get faster than they ever would have been if you keep going. “It’s all about moving forward the best way possible.” Dan says being a parent to a five-month-old baby has also been challenging but it’s helped him make the most of his time and become more organised. He says every day of racing is the equivalent of one week’s worth of recovery. “You have dreams of just lying on 10 mat-

tresses in your living room watching Star Wars,” he laughs. “The weeks after the race are usually very quiet. “It’s important to understand your body has been through a lot, it feels like a car crash, so it’s important to recover properly.” He says he is training between 12 and 20 hours a week in a mix of individual training and with his team. He says that training will intensify to around 30 hours a week closer to the race. “My diet is pretty normal,” he says. “It’s a about balance. “I really like avocados and nuts after a training session and berries are also great.” Dan says the team knows it will be competitive but since they have not raced together an expectation of a final placing is unfair. “We’d like to think we’ll be right up there but it also comes down to the course on the day and how well we navigate it and work together.”

Merry Christmas and happy New Year to all my clients

The management and staff of The Blenheim Sun wish you all love, laughter and magical moments this Christmas. Thank you to our valued readers, advertisers and deliverers who make our paper shine!

Wednesday

Christmas Greetings Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year The electorate office will reopen on Tuesday 12 Jan P: 0800 STUART MP (0800 788 278) W: www.stuartsmith.co.nz E: stuart.smithmp@parliament.govt.nz F: facebook.com/stuartsmith.national

Christmas is a time for celebration and relaxation; a chance for us to appreciate all the good things that have happened over the past year. I will be spending Christmas with my family at home and I hope you are all able to share the day with people you care about; to give and receive gifts and good wishes and to join together for a special meal. Christmas is a time when the offer of hospitality is greatly appreciated by those who are alone or isolated from their own families; a small gift or a shared meal can mean so much. Remember those for whom the last year has been a struggle. This is a time when we can all give a hand to those who may be having difficulty making ends meet or dealing with bereavement. With a brilliant summer ahead of us, I also want to send out a message of safety to everyone. Take care on the roads, at the beach and in our dry countryside. We give thanks to all those involved with emergency services who will be on duty at Christmas – but let’s all do our utmost to ensure they’re not called out.

Electorate Office: 22 Scott Street, Blenheim

A safe and happy Christmas to you all.

Toys and cheer Story and photo by Celeste Alexander The wild and wet weather held off long enough for the Ulysses Toy Run to be a success on Saturday. Just over 90 riders took part in the ride including one Nelson rider and two from Kaikoura. Club spokesperson Murray Brooks says despite it being slightly less than last year’s turnout, it was still a very successful day. “We are really happy with the turnout and amount of toys donated. It was a wonderful turnout from Marlborough riders

and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves,” he says. Riders met at the Woodbourne Tavern & Motels in Renwick before riding through to Blenheim. Even reporter Celeste Alexander was invited to participate, taking a seat on the back of a CanAm trike for the journey. Boxes upon boxes of toys were donated at the beginning and the end of the toy ride, making it a joyous occasion for the Salvation Army volunteers who will be distributing them for Christmas. Everything from scooters and ukeleles to baby ride-on toys and model cars were donated by

the riders and members of the community. Teenager Cheyne Pharland was on hand again this year volunteering as a toy collecter for the event. She has been volunteering for the toy run for the past six years. “I really love being part of this, it’s such a great cause and always a happy time collecting toys for children,” she says. RIGHT: Salvation Army volunteers Lea Shanks and Cheyne Pharland collecting toy donations at the Ulysses Marlborough Toy Run on Saturday.

Manson and Storey claimed line honours ahead of Chris Harris and Jade Uru. The women’s double proved a good race for Marlborough’s world champion Sophie Mac-

Robbie Manson.

Junior volleyball titles decided Last Friday was the finals of Marlborough Junior Volleyball’s Subway KIWIVolley Spikers Competition at Stadium 2000. In the Year 5 and 6 Grade Section 1, the young Grovetown Diggers played Witherlea Warriors for the top spot which the latter won with some good serving The second set was won by Grovetown’s teamwork 25-22. The third set went point for point with a lot of cheering from the crowd and Witherlea took it out when time was called at 17-14. Grovetown’s Luke Register had consistant powerful serving and accurate passing over the net while Witherlea’s teamwork and all round consistant serving won them the game. Section 2 of the 5 and6 Grade was also played between Witherlea and Grovetown and both teams impressed with their fluency, control and the communication amongst each other. The Grovetown Spikes were not only excellent servers but had colossal forearm and overarm passing skills. Samantha Fawcett-Kay demonstrated above adequate court awareness and genuine enjoyment of the game. Witherlea’s Saxon King displayed huge desire and tenacity for the ball through his court mobility and diving. Jordan Meikle and William Rowse both served very well too. This time Grovetown won all three sets 25-12, 25-19 and 15-8. In the Year 7 and 8 Section 1, Fairhall Smashers and Redwoodtown 2 had a competitive contest. Both teams got under some tough serves, played aggressively and were mobile in the front court.

Fairhall’s Katie Cairns showed huge growth in skill and Messina Salsea did very strong serves throughout for Redwoodtown 2 and they came out with the win in all three sets 25-21, 28-26 and 17-15. The Queen Charlotte College Aces played the Fairhall Flyers in the final in the Year 7 and 8 Section 2 Grade. Fairhall won the first set with some good serving from Tarryn Metcalfe 25-22. QCC Aces then turned the tables on Fairhall and won the next two sets 25-15 and 25-19 to take home the trophy. In the Premier Grade final between BIS Spikers and BIS Net Smashers the game was ultimately decided by mental strength, perseverance, and consistency with serving. The Spikers started off the game losing but quickly regained their confidence and skills, as evident by the score of their first set 25-15. Isla Dodson, Anna Gardiner and Maddy Croad all played well, especially behind the service line and kept calm and precise throughout. The Net Smashers unfortunately let the girls get a very good serving run in the second set and thus had difficulty making sufficient attacks, with the Spikers winning 25-11. Cody Stone showed great determination and enthusiasm while Ben Dalton displayed good court awareness and skill. Josh Whittall again served very consistently and was a constant source of motivation for his team. The boys of the Net Smashers won the last set 25-20 but the girls got the bragging rights and the trophy.
