Bigger bangs for New Year Continued from page 1 Marlborough 4 Fun chief executive Katrina Lange says the company they are working with is Night Owls, operated by Peter Owls who has worked with the organisation and the Picton Maritime Festival in the past. Peter will launch the fireworks in Picton from a barge that will be further out from the foreshore, and in Blenheim from the Taylor River bank. “This allows us to have bigger
displays and to go higher, so people will still see them from the centre of town. He’s very experienced and has always done a great job for us so I am really looking forward to seeing what he delivers,” Katrina says. Ignite Blenheim will kick off at 8pm at the Liz Davidson Square with bands Rockova followed by Watt 4. Ignite Picton will have plenty of early evening entertainment for families with inflatables, face
painting, stalls and Mr Whippy between 7pm and 9pm. Bands Onestep and A Minor Thing will perform from 7pm as well as the Diamond Divas who will MC the event and entertain the crowds throughout the evening. Diamond Divas featured on New Zealand’s Got Talent and are the daughters of NZ entertainer Frankie Stevens. “We have connections to Frankie through past events so we are
excited to have Diamond Divas as a part of our celebrations. “They are really fun and vibrant and will add to the party atmosphere,” Katrina says. Both Blenheim and Picton will have security to enforce the strict alcohol ban in place for the evening, to ensure everyone has an enjoyable time. Celebrating the beginning of 2016 will be the fireworks displays which will fire off after the clock strikes midnight.

Access by steep driveway, tight turning for long vehicles. OK for motorhomes up to 7 metres. Butchers Flat campsite This grassy, flat camping area was once a gold mining area
and is great for picnicking or swimming. You’ll also find walking and mountain biking opportunities nearby. Picnic, swim or fish in the Wakamarina River and walk or mountain bike on the nearby Doom or Wakamarina Tracks. There are high, unfenced cliffs at this campsite, so children need to be supervised. Toilets are wheelchair accessible, with assistance. Turn off SH 6 into Wakamarina Road at Canvastown and follow 15 km to end. French Pass campsite Gateway to Rangitoto ki te Tonga/D’Urville Island; watch the waters moving through Te Aumiti/French Pass. This scenic camp is a great base for boating, fishing, swimming and kayaking. Turn off SH 6 north of Rai Valley into Ronga Road which becomes Croisilles-French Pass Rd. Follow to the end,

Hopai Sports a fun filled day
This year’s Hopai Sports Day will be held on Saturday January 2, 2016 and promises a day filled with fun for the whole family to enjoy. It’s an annual tradition for families to attend the sports day and picnic which has been held since 1920. It’s an old fashioned family day out for everyone to enjoy. The traditional method of transport to the sports is by boat. You are now also able to drive there, setting off from either Picton or Havelock, turn off at Linkwater, follow the Kenepuru Road until you get to the Nopera Bay Golf Course. Just after that, turn right up the Crail Bay Road and follow the signs. The children from the school have painted signs that are put up just before the sports. “Follow your nose” is the message. Bring along a picnic lunch, the swim suits, deck chairs, sunshade, suntan lotion and get ready to participate or just be a spectator. Just in case the weather changes, bring along some warm clothes as well. So, if joining in the races isn’t what you want to do, just come along and cheer everyone else on. The Hopai committee run a small shop for the essential sweets, cold drinks and ice-creams. A sausage sizzle caters for those who didn’t bring their lunch. A small entry fee is charged and the

Grandmother and grandfather races never lack for entrants, neither do the married women and mens races. The boat races kick off when the tides are suitable and lifejackets are compulsory. Country Music The Annual Country Music Awards will celebrate 25 years with this years show. Auditions are from 8am to 5pm Saturday 16 January & Sunday 17 January with the Rock n Roll section on the Saturday night. More than 230 entries with contestants travelling from all over New Zealand. “We feel the buskers really add to the atmosphere on the night.” She says the December night market was a success which showed there was a desire for a summer night market. “Back in December it was quite a drizzly night so perhaps with some better weather we’ll get even more people.”

Whitehaven signs on for 10 years One of Marlborough’s longest-established wineries, Whitehaven Wine Company, is celebrating the export of its one millionth case of wine to the USA with a big Christmas gift for Marlborough – a 10-year sponsorship package for the new ASB Civic Theatre. Whitehaven managing director Sue White says the million case milestone was such a big achievement for her family winery that she wanted to share the success with the region. “We’re proudly Marlborough – we use only Marlborough grapes and we process everything here in Marlborough – and we value the fact that we can market our wines as genuinely Marlborough. “That authenticity is vital to us and I am pleased to be able to give something
back to this region for the privilege of being able to use Marlborough’s great attributes in marketing our wine in the United States,” she said. A long-time supporter of theatre events in Marlborough, Sue has pledged sponsorship of the function room in the new theatre overlooking the Taylor River. It will be named the Whitehaven Wine Room. “I’m especially pleased to be able to support the theatre knowing that it’s going to be used by so many groups in our community.” Sue and her late husband Greg established Renwick-based Whitehaven Winery in 1994. By 2010 when the NZ government began actively promoting NZ wine exports to the US, Whitehaven had already become the favourite New Zealand wine being poured for American consumers. “The North American consumer took some time to understand Sauvignon Blanc and I’m proud that Whitehaven played a significant part in paving the way for this variety in the US,” says Sue White. Today, the winery concentrates on exporting its award-winning Sauvignon Blanc to the US, but Whitehaven was also an early exporter of Marlborough Pinot Noir, picking up its first US medal for its pinot a decade ago. Sue White has made a contribution to Marlborough’s future.
Blenheim people are using the new red and yellow wheelie bins as intended but in Picton the bins have been used for household rubbish – not what they are intended for. The big bright bins are a Council experiment in public place recycling; recyclables like plastic bottles, glass, cans and cardboard go into the yellow bins and the red bins are for other waste like food scraps. The Council is aware that, in other parts of the country, public place recycling has met with mixed success with some people not interested in using the correct bins for materials. “Although there has been some very
positive feedback from both Blenheim and Picton, we’ve also discovered that people are dumping household rubbish in Picton in the foreshore bins – and that is not what these bins are designed to take,” says Council spokesman Stephen Rooney. “For example, someone dumped a large packaging carton for a household appliance that was far bigger than the bins. There’ve also been plastic bags full of rubbish dumped nearby and recyclables tossed on the ground rather than put in the bin. Disappointingly, it does suggest a lack of interest in the concept.” Stephen says the bins are being checked every day and emptied regularly.
He said the new bins were intended for the use of people out walking or enjoying the foreshore and were not receptacles for household overflow. Picton has a kerbside collection service and the red and yellow bins are not there to replace that service. Commercial waste for recycling is accepted at the transfer station at no charge, as is household recycling and there’s a big new recycling bin in place, near the Coathanger Bridge at the Picton marina, for boaties coming in from the Sounds needing to dump household rubbish. The public place recycling trial is due to run until February next year.

I waited for five to ten minutes in a main stream retailer before I was finally served and told I cannot buy or order the product from that store that I was after. By Jacob Page It’s that time of the year again when we all pause and have a look back at what was a fantastic year in New Zealand and Marlborough sport. Highlights from a provincial perspective have to include Sophie McKenzie’s back-to-back world championship light weight double victory. I know many felt a little deflated when she was named Marlborough Sports Person of the Year for a second straight time but you cannot argue with being a world champion. Georgia Catterick’s emergence into the Bike New Zealand squad. This was a phenomenal effort and the first in many steps to what promises to be an exciting career for the teenager. Ben Wheeler’s effort to make the Black Caps one-day cricket squad was a big moment. This is my claim for fame having happily filled numbers for a Celtic third grade team which included Ben in 2004. Here’s hoping injuries do not curtail his rapid rise. The left arm quick will also be trying to get the ultimate prize of a test cap in time. Internationally the Rugby and Cricket World Cup’s take most of the accolades. For me, the cricket was more enjoyable. As a long suffering cricket tragic, it was exciting to see New Zealand get behind them and fully believe they could win the whole thing. Grant Elliott’s six to beat South Africa in the semi-final, Kane Williamson’s six against Australia to beat them by one wicket at Eden Park and Tim Southee’s 7-33 against England in Wellington are all memories to be treasured, even if we failed to fire in the final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Anyone who was unaware just how good this generation of All Blacks was, just needed to watch the knockout games of the Rugby World Cup. The saluted six of Richie McCaw, Dan Carter, Ma’a Nonu, Conrad Smith, Keven Mealamu and Tony Woodcock all played their part. The smashing of France in the quarter finals was then enhanced with a gritty semi-final win over the Springboks. The final against Australia was one way traffic. Had it not been for Ben Smith’s yellow card, the men in black would have won by 25 points. It hasn’t sunk in that so many greats of the jersey have gone. It’s going to be a strange new world come the first All Blacks test in June. Congratulations must also go to the Highlanders for breaking their Super Rugby title duck and extending the Hurricanes’ one at the same time. Many Marlburians would have supported the southern franchise given the number of Tasman Makos players in the squad. Let’s hope for a few Olympic medals to make their way back to Marlborough after the Olympics – now that’s a good New Year’s resolution.

Amazing lady turns 100 Mary Webber has had a life time of happiness, and as she celebrates her 100th birthday today she will do so with a huge smile of satisfaction on her face. Mary, a resident of Waterlea Rest Home in Blenheim sat down with reporter Celeste Alexander to reminisce on a busy life and how excited she is to share her milestone with her friends. Up until one year ago Mary was walking into town and still is a very active member of the rest home. Today she celebrates a century of life and does so with grace and her trademark sweet smile. It’s evident by the attention she receives from rest home staff and residents that she is a well liked member of their ‘Waterlea family’. “Mary is one of life’s treasures, she is very special to us,” activities coordinator Karen Savage says. “She is a gorgeous lady in every sense, gentle, kind and very happy. Anything you do for Mary she is always so appreciative, even of the really little things. “We all love her here,” she says. Mary was born in Auckland on December 30, 1915 and was one of three children. Later in life Mary married her love Tom and the two found themselves living an ‘incredible’ life in the Tory Channel with their son Neil. After the war Mary and her family settled at the Te Pangu Lodge, a guest house they operated which saw many people come and go in the time they were there. “We had many people stay with us
and I enjoyed cooking for them. It was a lovely place to be and I remember it fondly,” she smiles. Mary and Tom also owned a restaurant in Christchurch for a number of years, serving up what she describes as ‘everyday food’. “It was nice homely food that people seemed to enjoy. People said I was a very good cook and I had customers say they had to come back to have the food again.” In the spare time Mary found between family and work commitments, she was also an avid dressmaker and singer. She loved to make her own clothing and even designed and sewed her own wedding outfit. In the early years of their marriage, Mary and Tom would spend many Saturday evenings at social dances, and other days Mary spent time helping people as much as she could. “She was a very giving person, always helping others,” her son Neil says. “I was a very busy girl, always doing something. But I was very happy in my married life and my family meant so much to me,” she says. Asked what she would do if she could do anything, she replied; “I would live my life over again!” “I was married to a wonderful husband and had a happy family life,” she says. Celebrations will kick off later today at Waterlea Rest Home with a high tea and a visit from Mayor Alistair Sowman.

Simple safety on boats Coastguard strongly urges anyone heading out on the water to wear a lifejacket this holiday season. “The Christmas and New Year period is always a busy time for Coastguard volunteers and we can’t stress enough the importance of wearing life jackets. you’re giving yourself the best chance of survival because accidents are by definition unpredictable, and it is extremely difficult to put on a life jacket once you are in the water. Life jackets Take them and wear them Nobody expects to fall overboard or their boat to sink. But, if you end up in the water, you have much more chance of saving yourself - and those on board with you - if you’re wearing a lifejacket. Lifejackets won’t save you unless you wear them. The Marlborough navigation bylaws require that all vessels have the sufficient number, size and type of lifejackets for everyone on the vessel. The Harbour Master has a zero tolerance approach to this rule. Anyone found to be in charge of a vessel without enough lifejackets on board will be issued an infringement notice and face a $200 penalty. That includes dinghies and kayaks In the interests of safety it is strongly recommended that, on vessels under 6m, everyone should wear a lifejacket at all times while at sea. Lifejackets can be the difference between surviving and drowning. Stay safe in the Sounds this summer
Picton ready for summer visitors
The sidewalk tables, the deckchairs and the sun umbrellas are all ready, opening up the vista from Picton’s London Quay for visitors. Once again this summer there will be no parking along this stretch of London Quay so cafe patrons will be able to sit and enjoy an uninterrupted harbour outlook.
Using our water resources wisely With more commercial irrigation and industrial processes, and more households with flushing toilets, washing machines, dishwashers, spa and swimming pools, water use has increased rapidly. Marlborough now uses 70% more water than was the case 30 years ago. Water is the most important resource in our region. Please play your part in managing it well. Marlborough households use an average of about 500 litres of water a day. Most of the year this is where it goes: • 30% on showers and baths • 30% down the toilet
• 20% in the kitchen • 20% in the laundry. But in the summer, water use can increase to 1500 litres daily. Much of this goes down the drain or onto gardens. Ensure sprinklers are directed at gardens, not paved areas. A garden sprinkler delivers 900 litres of water per hour. Hosing during the heat of the day means much of that water evaporates into the air. Use an efficient garden irrigation system with a timer and water only in the cool of the early morning or later evening. A leaking pipe on your property
wastes water; 300 litres a day will disappear from a 1.5mm hole in a water pipe. Check that outside taps aren’t dripping. Commercial and irrigation water users are reminded to be aware of all conditions of their water take and water use consents. Council’s Compliance Team is monitoring all consented water takes. Keeping safe in our coastal waters Summer is the busiest time of year for Council’s Harbours Team as they maintain regular patrols in our waters to maintain safety and manage the risks that exist where commercial shipping and recreational boaties share the confined water space of the Marlborough Sounds. Harbour Master Captain Alex Van Wijngaarden has 20 years’ knowledge and experience patrolling this region and is one of New Zealand’s most experienced maritime emergency controllers. His deputy, Luke Grogan, is also a fully qualified Harbour Master. Captain Van Wijngaarden leads a team of four who are responsible for the

If you’re going to a hot climate, remember that you may be less tolerant of the heat than others, even more so if you are overweight or have heart or diabetes problems. Beware of diarrhoea and constipation and make sure you know how to treat either situation. When going overseas, ensure you have travel insurance covering preexisting conditions. People urged to stay safe these holidays Wairau Hospital clinical head of emergency Dr Andrew Morgan has encouraged everyone to take care of themselves and their loved ones over the holidays. If injury or illness does occur he urges people to consider their options and not to treat the ED as a default option. “It’s in everyone’s interest that the ED is treated as a place where people with serious needs can quickly receive medical help. It’s not set up to focus on routine health care,” he says. “Most doctors would agree on a short list of problems that should always be treated as emergencies – chest pains, stroke symptoms, breathing difficulties, and severe and uncontrolled bleeding among them,” he said. “On the other hand, insect bites, strains, sprains and the flu were not generally emergencies and the patient would receive more appropriate treatment elsewhere,” he said. Marlborough Primary Health Organisation chief executive Beth Tester
says the PHO, GPs and the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board have been working this year to inform the public about the most appropriate places in Marlborough to seek care for non-emergency conditions. “Primary health providers such as GPs, practice nurses and pharmacists were the people to see for most health matters,” she said. “If you are feeling unwell and it’s not a medical emergency, your options include calling Healthline on 0800 611 116, or consulting a pharmacist, your GP or practice nurse,” she said. All the general practices in Marlborough will be open on non-statutory holiday days over the Christmas and New Year period. Visitors to Marlborough who need a GP on these days should access the Marlborough Primary Health Organisation website at www.marlboroughpho. org.nz for the acute on-call GP phone number.
