A deadly water bottle Chris Tobin Beware clear plastic water bottles in cars.

This is something Blenheim mum Nikita Woodford discovered to her alarm early on Tuesday afternoon.

She was at home in her Edith Street home, near the Maxwell Rd-Alabama Rd intersection, with her three children Hemi, 5, Lyriq, 3, and Lexus, 1, when she heard an almighty bang.

Looking out her lounge window she saw flames leaping from the smashed windscreen of her 1996 Mitsubish Legnum which was parked near the house.

However, the car was parked over it and would not function.

“A neighbour came over with a hose and he put out the fire before the fire engine arrived.”

The interior of the car had been gutted by the flames and parts had melted due to the heat of the flames.

The cause?

A clear plastic water bottle Nikita had left on the floor of the front passenger seat which had ignited a fire because of the sun.

“I never thought a water bottle could do that,” she said.

A firefighter told her under a hot sun a bottle could become like a magnifying glass if it was shiny. Nikita was thankful it had not been worse.

“I wasn’t thinking about the fuel tank till the neighbour said something about it. I had no idea.”

She had third party insurance on the car but this lapsed three weeks ago.

Clear plastic fires ‘not common’ Blenheim chief fire officer and fire safety officer Rob Dalton said fires caused by clear plastic water bottles was not a common phenomenon and a range of factors had to come together for it to occur.

“In a lot of cases a range of conditions meet up to give you a problem.”

Among these factors were the heat, intensity and angle of the sun. In these circumstances the beam of sunlight penetrating through clear plastic could become like a magnifying glass. Prisms hanging in windows have also been known to cause fires.

However, Mr Dalton commented: “It’s not that common a phenomenon at all.”

Nikita said her husband Hemi had a car which he used for work.

However, for getting around each day she would now be walking and using a pram.

“All I can do now is walk till I save enough money for a car.

“I’ll never have a water bottle in a car again.”

Ready for the rebuild Annabelle Latz It is quite ironic that Reuben Harvey was working on a demolition job with his dad in Christchurch on February 22, 2011.

He had just gone home for lunch from the University of Canterbury campus when the earthquake struck.

Three weeks’ ago he packed his bags and moved to Christchurch, to join DW Construction, a company committed to rebuilding the city and its suburbs.

The Christchurch rebuild is an attractive option of work for tradespeople in this region.

As Project Manager for DW Construction, Reuben will be overseeing the wide range of jobs the company is involved in, which is contracted to Fletcher Construction.

“It’s pretty exciting, it’s full on,” he said.

With the recent collapse of Mainzeal Construction, they will be even busier.

“We are screaming out for tradespeople.”

Reuben has a few friends in Christchurch already from Blenheim.

In recent years he has been helping out his friend who started DW Construction, and when the offer came of a full time position, it was too hard to turn down.

“I was happy with my job up here in Blenheim, but the growth and development in this role was what attracted me to it.”

“I’ll be in it for the long haul.”

Reuben is also the First Aid, health and safety officer.

“We’ve had one shake since I’ve been here, it’s a little reminder.”

Last year 12 students completed the Certificate in Carpentry at the Nelso Marlborough Institute of Technology in Blenheim.

Tutor Alan Jones said they all gained work in Blenheim, and six of them gained apprentices.

Of the 12 students in the class of 2011, five have gone to Christchurch for the rebuild.

Car crashes into ditch near Picton

Annabelle Latz Fires are soaring uphill faster than people walk, and the giant eucalyptus trees can crash to the ground without warning.

This will be reality for six men, members of the Blenheim Volunteer Rural Fire Force, who left yesterday for Victoria in Australia, to battle bush fires.

Jim Herdman from the Department of Conservation will be fire line supervisor, with Chris Hayles as crew leader.

Crew members are Richie Law, who, like Jim and Chris is not unfamiliar to such projects.

Dave Koubek, Peter Selby, Phil Hodson and Quintin Morgan are the other crew members.

Richard McNamara, Principal Rural Fire Officer, said they will be part of a New Zealand deployment contingent of 44 fire fighters, heading to the fires in East Gippsland, in the Omeo Mt Hotham area.

“Their job will be to control fire lines in heavy eucalyptus forests,” said Richard, who is also familiar with working in environments like this.

Jobs will include chainsaw work to cut down endangering trees, using hand tools, and using pumps to

extinguish the fire reach.

“Remember, this fire is motoring.

For every 10 degree of slope, the fire’s rate of speed will double,” said Richard.

Some blocks of bush fire are as big as 12,000 hectares.

This means instead of battling the actual fire, it is important to ‘burn out’ areas surrounding the existing fire, like burning lines alongside roads and railway lines, to prevent the fire ‘jumping’ and spreading any further.

Richard said they have to be very careful in the tall timber, because visibility is minimal, and trees can

fall down easily.

“Dead standing trees are the biggest danger.”

Richard said the crew is very experienced, “They will be helping out our mates across the Tasman.”

He said it was great that the region had such a good representation heading to Victoria, and encouraged the Marlborough and Kaikoura community to be proud of them.

“You need to know there are very good urban and vegetation fire crews here.”

They will be gone for three weeks, carrying out two seven day shifts.

Jane sees red over roses Chris Tobin Blenheim motel owner Jane Parsons was seeing red yesterday.

Considering that yesterday was Valentine’s Day and that she has half a dozen plots of beautiful red roses blooming around her motor lodge, things should have been coming up rosy.

But that was not the case.

A guest checking out from Mrs Parson’s’ Brydan On Rose Motor Lodge on the corner of Middle Renwick Rd and Rose St yesterday, told her that at about 9am she’d seen someone clipping Mrs Parson’s roses.

When the guest approached the woman, who was dressed in a long dress and heavy cardigan, the woman ran off with a large bunch of roses, jumped in a car and sped off.

“It’s stealing,” Mrs Parsons said. “It makes me angry because my husband Don and I, do all the garden and we don’t get a lot of time to get out there.”

Mrs Parsons said a similar incident happened last year.

She suspected the woman ended up selling the Jane Parsons in one of her rosebeds from which roses were stolen yesterday, Valentine's Day. red roses on a street corner.

Saying ‘I do,’ for the second time Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Michele Ford had butterflies in her stomach yesterday, just like the day she shared wedding vows with her husband Richard for the first time.

But she did not even have time to worry about choosing a new dress when they renewed their vows yesterday.

They were the lucky-draw winners of the More FM competition, giving a couple the chance to renew their vows on Valentines Day. Michele and Richard married in Rotorua eleven years ago, and have two children Duncan, 12,

and Kaylee, 15.

They moved to Marlborough 10 years ago.

Richard, an electrician for Marlborough District Council, said they heard the promotion on the radio, and with the help of marriage celebrant Carol Taylor, created some more vows.

“This time they were very modern. They were a bit more traditional back when we married,” said Richard.

Michele, looking beautiful in her bright summery dress, said she did not even have a chance to buy a new one for the occasion, as they only learned they were the winners yesterday.

“I was going to cook Richard a nice dinner this evening, like ribs or a rack of lamb. But he won’t be getting that now,” said Michele.

The couple went to Hotel D’Urville for dinner, thanks to Nicolas Perez from Harcourts Marlborough.

They said the key to a happy marriage was to not end the day on an argument.

Carol Taylor has been a marriage celebrant for six years, and sees more couples renewing vows these days.

“They look at their happy marriage together, and it’s more Richard and Michele Ford renewed their vows meaningful. I think it’s quite in Pollard Park yesterday, after 11 years of lovely.” marriage.

A male in his mid seventies was transported to Wairau Hospital early yesterday morning with serious chest injuries, following a crash just on the south side of the Picton Elevation.

Only one vehicle was involved; the vehicle leaving the road and crashing into a ditch.

The patient was treated at the scene by two ambulance crews, stabilised, then transported.

It is believed the patient was driving from Christchurch to catch an early morning ferry when the accident happened.

Tickets available for fundraising dinner A dinner to raise money for a North Island dog handler who has a rare brain tumor, requiring treatment in Germany, is taking place at Clubs of Marlborough in Blenheim on Thursday March 7.

The fundraising event and charity auction is being organised by one of Blenheim’s dog handlers Senior Constable Steve Tribe, and civilian support staff member Kate Smith.

Tickets are $35 each, and include a buffet meal.

St Arnaud accident A Christchurch man was airlifted to Nelson Hospital on Wednesday with spinal injuries after his glider spun out of control during a landing. The 47-year-old man was picked up by the NelsonMarlborough rescue helicopter at 2pm on Wednesday after his glider landed short of the Lake Station airfield at St Arnaud.

Ferry to return Cook Strait ferry operator Bluebridge is hoping to get its ferry Santa Regina back into passenger and freight service on the Cook Strait run early next week. The ferry struggled into Wellington Harbour. Last Friday one of the ferry’s two engines broke down during an overnight sailing from Wellington to Picton and it struggled into Wellington harbour.

Airport profits ‘excessive’ Wellington International Airport, which is co-owned by Infratil and Wellington City Council, is extracting excessive profits by targeting higher returns than it should, according to the Commerce Commission. The transport hub is likely to recover between $38 million and $69 million more than it needs to for a reasonable return between 2012 and 2017, the antitrust regulator said in a final report to Commerce Minister Craig Foss and Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee. The commission thinks a reasonable return is 7.1 percent to 8 percent, whereas the airport is projected to make returns of between 12.3 percent and 15.2 percent, it said.

House prices ease New Zealand house prices eased from a record last month while the volume of sales had a seasonal dip compared to December, according to the Real Estate Institute. The national median house price fell 4.9 percent in January from December to $370,000 and was 4.2 percent higher than in January 2012.

The median price in Auckland rose 8.1 percent from January last year.

Dishing up a treat on Picton foreshore A new mobile food trailer ‘Off The Hook’ opened for business on the Picton foreshore in recent weeks.

Owner Helena Bullen said they had plenty of mouth watering food available.

“We buy fresh fish from Uncle Lawrence at Ngamarau,” she said. The menu includes gourmet burgers with Silverfern farms ribeye and a lot more. “We’d like to thank the Marlbrough District Council for all their help,” she said.

KITE expands as business grows Blenheim’s Koru Institution of Training and Education (KITE) is currently being upgraded and expanded, as the organisation continues to grow.

Renovations of the Sutherland Terrace campus include three new classrooms and an extension of two existing classrooms, and follow the opening of a new branch in Nelson last July.

KITE CEO, Monique Gemmell, says the upgrades are taking place to cater for their growing business, which predominantly attracts mothers who want to get back into the work force.

The upgrades mean KITE can now offer the Blenheim public a programme in Forestry Harvesting, Level 3, adding to their current courses of Computing, Computing and Business Administration, and Social Services.

The opening of the sister site in Nelson has been successful, and will be continuing this year.

The local establishment is rated by NZQA to be a category one organisation, and has won numerous awards, including the Trustpower Customer Choice award in 2006, and the Mana Maori South Island Best Business, Awards 2007, where Mrs Gemmell also won the Best Businesswoman award.

Mrs Gemmell says enrollments are coming in fast for this year’s programmes, and she expects enrollment numbers to meet their yearly average of about 430 students again.

The new and improved Blenheim campus will be open to the public on Febuary 25, if the builders are out in time, Mrs Gemmell says.

Dear Ed, Regarding the constant tax hike on alchohol in bars, what is the ultimate goal? Prohibition is proven to fail spectacularly and I am not convinced pricing alchohol in bars out of reach for the average consumer is having the intended result.

Everyone is aware that in NZ there is a ‘drinking culture’, my point is making a relatively safe and secure place, generally with security and responsible managers and bar tenders a place where noone can afford to enjoy a few pints - but instead forcing people to go out, buy home-made spirits

and enjoy them in unsupervised and un-regulated venues counterintuitive.

Removing safe channels (or in this case pricing out the average consumer) for the purchase and consumption of liquor only creates black market demand, teenagers ‘preloading’ before going to town and puts people at risk. For example the untimely death of the young man up in Auckland from consuming the home-brew spirits.

What my gist is, is the unending tax hike working? Is it ‘fixing’ our drinking culture. From what I can see, the answer is no.

A good face Dear Ed, What a superb few weeks we have had in Blenheim.

First we had the wonderful Heritage Day at Brayshaw Heritage Park.

It was great to see mums, dads and kids enjoying all the old farm machinery and the fun rides with the Riverside railway and on the miniature trains as well.

There was a wide range of

entertainment and with only a gold coin entry it was great value.

Let’s not forget the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival.

Sun, wine, a big happy crowd, no over the top boisterous boozing, good music.

Neryl's amazing lillies Neryl Savage (pictured) was so impressed with her Christmas lillies this year she brought a photo into the Sun to show us.

This was several weeks ago and due to space constraints it has taken some time to make the paper but we think it is still worthwhile.

Neryl, who enjoys gardening with her husband Graham on their Marlborough Ridge property, said she had been amazed when she saw the buds developing on the stems of her growing Christmas lillies.

“I couldn’t believe how they were growing and on the

One stem produced an extraordinary 32 heads and two others had 24 and 18.

“It seems to have been the particular bulbs I bought or it may be just the season,” Neryl said in explanation.

“We also have nice soil up here where there’s no clay.”

The stems grew to an impressive 2.1m in height.

“Last yea r we didn’t produce as many but this year has been amazing,” said Neryl.

She was looking forward to what next season’s lillies would be like.

When the tops start dying back, stop watering or you’ll encourage the bulbs to resprout.

Don’t pull it out by the stems, fork it up carefully.

Lay the bulbs out to dry.

Or freeze for convenience.

Peaches are plentiful at the moment and here’s an excellent recipe you should try.

PEACH MARGARITAS! Puree 4 cups ripe peaches, the juice of 3 limes, 2 tablespoons tequila, 2 tablespoons orange liqueur or triple sec and 1/3 cup icing sugar.

Gradually add 2 cups crushed ice, blending until smooth.

Pour salt on a small plate, dip the rims of 2 margarita glasses in water and then in salt.

Fill with margarita mixture and garnish with a fresh peach wedge.

3. Watering Water-stressed plants soon stop cropping.

Regular watering is essential for beans, courgettes, cucumbers, eggplants, peppers and tomatoes.

Feed weekly with liquid fertiliser for bigger yields.

4. Dig spuds Harvest potatoes when they start to flower Spuds take 60-90 days to mature, depending on the variety.

Mark sharing his icons of art Chris Tobin Sharing his art collection with the wider community is something Mark Stephenson enjoys and he would like to see school groups become involved also.

The well known Blenheim real estate company owner and art collector would like to see them visiting the Millennium Art Gallery in Blenheim to view his latest exhibition of art.

“They’d have to go to Te Papa or a major gallery to see something similar; they’re of museum quality,” he said of the works currently on display in the exhibition, ‘New Zealand Art Icons from the Stephenson Collection.’

The art includes works by Billy Apple, Colin McCahon, Michael Smither, Bill Hammond, Darryn George, James Robinson, and Frances Hodgkins.

They are highly rated works by these standout artists. Mr Stephenson said, for example, Hammond’s ‘Unknown European Arts, was the best work by the artist he had seen while the Frances Hodgkins painting, A Country Window, has been placed among the five best works by the artist.

“The Tate Gallery wanted to keep that painting in England,” Mr Stephenson said.

His interest in art collecting goes back 30 years when he was principal of St Joseph’s School in Picton. He has concentrated on contemporary New Zealand art from the 1930s onwards and also has a collection of Australian art.

“I’ve always had a liking for art but there was Mark Stephenson with Frances Hodgkins’ painting ‘A Country Window’ which is currently part of an exhibition at the Millenno background of it in the family. I used to enjoy nium Art Gallery going to the Aigantighe Art Gallery in Timaru which was a working platform for artists. with my mum. She had what I consider is, ‘an eye;’ you’ve to see if he’s interested.’

Cheers, so much to celebrate

Marlborough Wine and Food Festival was a huge success at the weekend, and according to a British scholarship winner and a Japanese wine grower based in Marlborough, this industry and this region certainly has something to celebrate.

Embrace the diversity Kat Wiggins was asked if she might get bored sipping wine constantly on a scholarship visit to Marlborough late last year.

As the first British winner of the Wine Marlborough/NZ-UK Link Foundation/John Avery Scholarship Kat visited the region, and said boredom was the last thing on her mind.

“While it's true to say that I certainly tasted a lot of Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and more, there wasn't a single moment during my trip when I thought ‘I've heard this all before’. Everyone was different - their practices, philosophies and personalities were all unique.”

The 32 year-old is marketing manager with Lay and Wheeler, a British fine wine merchant, part of Majestic Wine.

Kat was quick to observe the diversity of the Marlborough, both between valleys, and in regions within the valleys.

“It displayed different characteristics within their wines.”

The wine industry, open and friendly, meant everyone was welcoming and willing to help her.

"From the state-of-the-art at Marisco and Brancott, through to smaller scale and artisan

producers like Staete Landt and Te Whare Ra; from the biodynamic philosophies of Seresin to the science and pragmatism of Forrest; from the grand scale of Yealands, Cloudy Bay and Villa Maria, through to single vineyards like Ballochdale and Kekerengu; I learned something new every day.”

“There are now perhaps two generations of winemakers in the region, both of whom can benefit from the knowledge, outlook a nd exp er ience of the other.”

Kat Wiggins loved her time in Marlborough, and can’t wait to come back.

Passionate about Pinot Noir Elegance is one word used to describe Marlborough’s Pinot Noir, which is evolving and improving every year.

That is what producer Takaki Okada loves about it, and that is the message he shared when he was tasting at the Pinot Noir NZ 2013 Conference in Wellington a fortnight ago.

Dubbed as the “fresh thinking” event, the event was a chance for growing regions around the country and Pinot Noir producing representatives from overseas to get together and talk about developments, taste wines, from a ‘grass roots level.’

It was first held in 2001.

“It was a really good opportunity to taste different Pinot Noirs from around New Zealand,” said Takaki.

About to start the third vintage for his own label Folium, he knows it will taste different to last year’s wine.

“That’s what I like about the Pinot Noir from this country.”

Born in Japan, Takaki has been in Marlborough since 2003, firstly a vineyard manager at Clos Takaki Okada has his own label Forum, and grows Henri, and since 2009 he has been setting up his grapes on Brancott Rd. He says his Pinot Noir his own brand; growing six hectares of Pinot changes and evolves with every vintage.

Good times roll at festival A crowd of over 7000 basked under a bright sun at the Marlborough Wine and Food Festival at Brancott Estate near Blenheim on Saturday.

More than 60 vineyards and 25 food sites ensured those present could partake.

Tim Crawford, the chairman of the festival’s organising committee, said it was the best ever. Changes made to the festival to target an older audience and with tweaking of the music and availability of water throughout the day, proved a success.

Next year the festival will celebrate its 30th year.

Talking business about helping youth

By Annabelle Latz If Marlborough businesses can work alongside Youth Programmes, everyone will benefit.

This is the message from David Taylor, one of the three new trustees of Foundation for Youth Development (FYD) Marlborough.

He will help set the direction of FYD, and extend the child and youth charity’s profile both locally and wider afield.

“Two key steps in growing the reach of FYD are how do we get partners to come alongside us and how do we fund the roll out of new programmes,” said David.

The aim of FYD is to inspire all school age New Zealand children to reach their full potential through programmes that help build self-esteem and promote good values which teach valuable life, education

David, who has a business mentoring and people skills company, Positive Potential, said with his natural talents and enthusiasm for mentoring, and his connections with Marlborough businesses, he feels confident he can encourage local businesses to help Marlborough’s youth get exposure to potential career opportunities.

“It’s about getting businesses involved, to see if they can give kids some insight into what really happens in the work place.”

David, originally from Scotland, moved to Marlborough a year ago from Sydney, after a career in banking.

He is a board member on the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce and holds advisory and mentoring roles on banking and mentoring programmes globally.

He knows that positive mentoring and exposure to role models from a young age can help create wonderful futures.

FYD was founded by Sir Edmund Hillary’s friend and climbing companion, Graeme Dingle and lawyer Jo-anne Wilkinson in 1995 as the Project K Trust.

Sir Ed served as one of the first trustees, and together they wanted to take a practical step forward to address high levels of negative youth statistics in New Zealand.

David will be working alongside the other two new trustees Nicki Bennett and Laurie Murdoch.

They will join Lisa Delaveau and Tracy Johnston, chair, on the trust board.

“The business community will see more of us. We will put on some small gatherings to tell our story and show how it can give our youth a hand up in life.”

Pets’ speed dating by SPCA

By Kat Duggan Marlborough SPCA will be holding an open day tomorrow at its base in Renwick with a range of activities planned for the public, including ‘furry speed dating’.

Marlborough SPCA office manager, Kate Horrey, said the focus of the day was to hold an adopt-a-thon, to help the SPCA find some great homes for their animals.

Super 15 rugby rolls around again It’s still hit-out time for the New Zealand franchises but Super 15 rugby rumbles into action this weekend.

Aussie teams Rebels against the Force, Brumbies v Reds will be kicking off the new season.

Kiwi teams will follow next week with the Highlanders taking on defending champions the Chiefs on the southerners’ home turf, Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, while the Hurricanes will be up against the Blues in Wellington.

The Crusaders have another week to wait after that before they begin their 2013 campaign – against the Hurricanes in Wellington.

Of the New Zealand franchises, a pepped up Highlanders outfit looks

dangerous, the Chiefs will be up there again no doubt and coaches Todd Blackadder (Crusaders) and John Kirwan (Blues) will be watched closely to see what kind of magic they can weave with their sides.

The clock’s ticking for Todd Blackadder to deliver with a Super 15 title so that’s going to be interesting.

There were about 20 bikers taking part at Le Cafe in Picton too.

Road cycling is his sport too, he enjoys everything about biking.

His mate Nick Blakiston, 17, bikes from Springlands, works part time at a bike shop, and his sport is also road cycling.

“It’s not too hard, and you get a good breakfast on a day like today,” said Nick.

Bike Walk Marlborough is Marlborough’s walking and cycling advocates group, and works alongside Marlborough District Council to promote cycling.

Rob Dunn, coordinator for the group, said there are many benefits to cycling.

He said health, fitness, money saving and environmental sustainability could all be achieved.
