Ready to rock quest Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Dani Gibbs (right) feels the adrenaline flow through her body when she strums to her audience. The 15 year-old Queen Charlotte College student will be one of nine solo or group performances at the Marlborough Smokefreerockquest next Saturday evening. Live performance is not new to Dani. She has been singing for many years, and picked up the guitar five years ago, for something to accompany her with her singing. This will be her third time performing at Rockquest; she has performed once before as a solo artist, and once with the band ‘Complexcity.’ Continued on Page 2

quote of the week

When you betray somebody else, you also betray yourself. – Isaac B. Singer BROUGHT TO YOU BY:

60 Main Street Blenheim Ph: 577 2299 OPEN 7 DAYS 6AM TO 11PM

A quest for rock Continued from Page 1 As a solo performer at Rockquest, Dani will sing and play ‘Do You Remember,’ and with 14 year-old Year 10 Queen Charlotte student Jack Driffill, who is accompanying her with his guitar, ‘Prayer Flakes’ will be performed. She is also a familiar face at Picton’s annual Picton Maritime Festival, and regularly plays at local restaurants, and performs at school functions. Friends describe her music as soulful, soft rock. “I think I will do pretty well. But at the end of the day if I don’t win anything that’s alright because I enjoy playing music.” Dani said singing is “her thing.”

“I’ve always been able to find a melody, I always know what I want to sing before I start working with chords.” Her guitar skills are a combination of self taught efforts, and help from Picton-based tutor Simon Evans. “I love the buzz of performing. Music is something I’ll always come back to, it will always be me.” Jacob Johnson-Firth and Jack Gent are the Queen Charlotte College members of the band ‘First World Disasters,’ playing drums and bass guitar, who will also feature next Saturday. Jack is also back up vocalist, to fellow band member and lead vocalist and guitarist Mitch

Alderlieste, of Marlborough Boys’ College. Mitch won Marlborough’s Got Talent competition last month. Jack has played bass guitar for three years, and said this band was formed in January. “We’re a rock band, but we will do a bit of everything,” he said. Jacob has played drums for one year, and played guitar in the band ‘Le Movement’ before this. “I’m very excited, it will be the first time I’ve played live drums, so it should be interesting.” Marlborough Boys’ College student Thornton Church is drummer for one of their school bands ‘Hold On We’re Sinking.’

He described the group as having a pop and punk influence. Thornton was a member of the band ‘Down to Funk’ that came second last year at Rockquest, and won best song. “We will hopefully have a good chance this year,” he said. The Queen Charlotte College students want to thank Rosie Parsons for all her help over recent years with their music. Also featuring at Rockquest: Solo artists Clara van Wel, Lee Stuart, and Little Wolf from Marlborough Girls’ College, band Tame from Marlborough Girls’ College, and bands Eagle Vs Shark and Two Brothers from Marlborough Boys’ College.

Leading the way at Renwick By Annabelle Latz The seniors at Renwick School are leading their own path. On Monday afternoon, about 100 year seven and eight pupils received leadership badges at the Leadership ceremony. “This is a big occasion for the school as it recognises the abilities and talents,” said teacher and Year seven and eight team leader Cat Hynd. The badges are sewn onto their green jackets, which were donated to all 125 year seven and eight pupils from the Parent Support Group. The Group raised the required $10,000 for them through fundraising efforts like the annual Renwick Festival of Wheels. Senior school teacher Nic Walker said the visual impact of the badges on the jackets works as a

great example of leadership for the junior pupils to look up to. Points are accumulated throughout the year through different methods of achievement and leadership; academic, cultural, and personal. William Day, in year seven, is on the student committee and helps to look after the grounds. “The leadership badges were good because they show how responsible each other are.” Kate Benesan, also year seven and on the student committee, helps with the ICT. “It makes us set our own goals, so everyone can earn badges,” she said. RIGHT: William Day, 11, and Kate Benesan, 11, received leadership badges this week for their hard work in all aspects of school life at Renwick School.

Marlborough District Council an option for guarantor By Robbie Parkes Representatives f rom t he Marlborough Civic Trust went to Marlborough District Council on Tuesday to outline the financial details and banking arrangements for the new Civic Theatre. Six companies have been invited to bid for the contract and tenders close early next month. In order for a contract to be awarded, the Trust had to meet contractual obligations which required the Council to act as guarantor. Marlborough Civic Theatre Trust chairman Kevin Moseley said it is relatively normal for the Council to act as guarantor. The Trust have had a loan approved from ASB bank but that money will act as a backup in case government assistance is not

Marlborough Civic theatre trust chairman kevin Moseley

secured. “And that’s what the guarantor is for,” said Kevin. “The hope is that we’ll never have to borrow any of the money.”

Approximately $2.75 million is needed and the Trust is confident that money will be secured. He said once there’s been a tender taken up they will be in a position to start the project. And once the building is sold to Council, that money will be used to fund the project. “Once we’ve sold the building to Council, we don’t have an asset to borrow against.” “We’re still hoping to have some government support,” said Kevin. The Trust applied to the Significant Project Fund under the Labour government but when National took office, the incentive was ceased. He said National is now thinking of restarting the Fund, and the Theatre is expected to be one of the first projects through the door.

An application has also been approved by the Canterbury Community Trust for a grant, subject to Council guarantee. “We’ve got another fundraiser that we’ll start the minute the building’s sorted.” Kevin said there are plenty of examples around the country of projects that are short on funds when they begin construction. He said many of them begin work 30% short of what is required to finish the project. “That last bit of money doesn’t come through until the last minute.” Mayor Alistair Sowman said he was confident the Trust will be able to meet its financial targets and it is highly unlikely that Council will be asked to meet the guarantee obligations.

More bus shelters to be built The Marlborough District Council is planning to build six more bus shelters on the Blenheim Bus route – two each year. The Council’s Older Persons’ Forum has lobbied the Council to build all six bus shelters within the next financial year. The Council has budgeted for the work over three years and, with little likelihood of an NZTA

subsidy for new shelters in the near future, the Council has agreed to look at advertising and sponsorship to help meet the cost of building them more quickly than planned. Each shelter costs about $6000. Council’s Assets and Services Committee will take another look at the matter soon. Passenger numbers on the Blenheim Bus are growing

slowly but overall patronage means the bus service is still only about 30% full. That’s somewhere between 23,000 and 24,000 passenger trips each year. Three-quarters of the passengers are from the Redwoodtown-Witherlea side of town and the first of the new bus shelters are expected to be located on that route.

The late night openings have been going for well over thirty years and are coming to an end due to a decline in people making use of it. Thursday will revert to the regular closing time of 6 pm.

It is proposed that additional provisions be made to investigate what may be done to ensure verandahs, anchor points and connection cleats are stable and work in an earthquake. Also to establish a register of unreinforced masonry buildings. with petrol price drop

By Robbie Parkes With a significant drop in petrol prices in the last month, the long-term effects are looking pretty good for service station owners and motorists. Petrol prices fell four cents per litre in May, ending the month on $2.16 per litre for 91 octane, with diesel down three cents to $1.54 per litre in the main centres. Pump prices also fell seven cents per litre in the first week of June. For Grant Stubbs, owner of Blenheim Caltex, the last independently owned service station in town, this price drop is looking good for the foreseeable future. A three or four cent drop per litre makes very little difference in the short-term, but in the long-term it will, he said. “The cheaper the fuel prices, the higher profit margin we make on fuel,” he said. “If fuel’s expensive, the percentage profit we make is smaller.” He said, at that cost your typical family could save around $100 on petrol over a 12 month period. There are initial pains with being an

independent owner with the price drops however. When the prices dropped by four cents on all products last month, the four tanks Grant owned, had to be reduced too. He lost around $3,000 as a result but because of that his next delivery was done at a lower price. “As a private owner with a big fuel price drop, we wear it.” Because he’s a local owner, Grant said he can make his own fixed prices but obviously has to keep them near enough to market prices to make a profit. He said it’s a competitive market and there’s always a bit of back and forth with the prices. As soon as he has them higher than the other service stations, customers will notice the difference. AA PetrolWatch spokesperson Mark Stockdale said the reduction in pump prices mostly matches the fall in refined commodity prices over the last two months. “The AA’s monitoring of commodity prices and exchange rates shows that by the

Seddon to benefit from Council’s long term plan The Seddon community has come out of the annual plan round with one of the biggest wins - a promise of $48,000. The money will fund repairs for the building used by the Seddon Community Hub as well as its Memorial Hall. The Marlborough District Council has also promised the community it will investigate the lighting and general safety of the SH1 underpass. The location and design of much-needed new public toilet amenities for the township has yet to be resolved. Councillors agree that these facilities are very important as this can be the first stop

for travellers arriving from the south. Mayor Alistair Sowman says Seddon has long been a very self-sufficient community but this maintenance work is urgently needed and, if it’s not done soon, it will be even more expensive to undertake. Both these matters have been referred to Council’s Assets and Services Committee for further action. The Council has already budgeted for the cost of a feasibility study on the upgrade of the Awatere Memorial Hall. A report on a new option for the upgraded hall will be discussed with community representatives in the next few weeks.

Local Authority Statistics: March 2012 quarter Local authorities had a quarterly operating surplus in the March 2012 quarter, Statistics New Zealand said. Income exceeded expenditure by $50 million (after adjusting for seasonal effects). “The operating surplus in the March 2012 quarter follows a surplus of $63 million in the December 2011 quarter, and are the first surpluses since the $14 million surplus in the December 2007 quarter,” said local government statistics manager Peter Gardiner.

Operating income (funding earned for core services) for the March 2012 quarter was $2.0 billion, and increased by $5 million (0.3 percent) from the December 2011 quarter. Operating expenditure (spending on core services) also increased during the same period, by $19 million (1.0 percent), to $1.9 billion. Local authority statistics are quarterly accounting-based estimates of the money local authorities in New Zealand earn and spend on their core business.

Dear Ed, I’m writing regarding false advertising on 2 different items. First is on the property press we receive weekly (Marlborough Express). Last weeks (June 7) shows an awesome photo on the cover of Picton. Boy! Wouldn’t one fancy that for a view from their lounge? ment of my recent submissions on traffic to the Council, so I assume there is no intention in place to consider this matter or make arrangements for improved safety. I note that Marlborough Roads (Frank Porter) accepts the proposed new Ale House, which will mean even more traffic for the elderly to contend with, as well as for all the many other pedestrians. So it seems that we must accept that there is no concern there for pedestrians, even though Marlborough Roads is in the position of taking control of the safety of pedestrians who need to cross Middle Renwick Road. hoped. The 2nd item regards the Sunday Markets in town (The Farmer’s, the People’s, and Taste Markets). The people’s and Farmers always seem to be doing well, but as for Taste Market which advertises crafts, ethnic food, music etc each week, it’s a dead loss. Most times when our family go there, there’s bugger all there. Sometimes there’s just a coffee cart and that’s it. It’s a dead loss. Nothing like what’s advertised. Signed, What’s going on?

Marlborough musicians collect awards By Robbie Parkes This year’s Golden Valley Country Music Awards recognised a lot of standout Marlborough musicians but also brought in the most entrants the awards have ever seen. There were over 200 entries for the 23rd awards this year. Blenheim Country Club member Sandra McNeilly said it was the most they had ever seen. The event was held in Takaka on Queens Birthday Weekend where members of the Blenheim club took home alot of the big awards. Richard McCallum took out seven titles, including: the overall award, Traditional Unaccompanied, Male Open, Veteran, Male Gospel, Best Dressed Male and Male Personality. “It’s very good for the Blenheim Club, it helps our profile,” said Sandra. “Quite a good standard for Takaka.” Sandra herself scored first place in the Novelty Section and also received a Highly Commended in Original Song-Writing. “It’s always been quite a fun awards.”

“I’ve been quite lucky in song-writing over the years.” She said it’s great for people just starting out, and Marlborough was pretty well represented this year. Ange Cook won Novice Senior, Female Gospel, Best Chord Charts, and received a Fender guitar as an incentive award. Sally Cook came first in the Junior Novice 9 years and under, and placed second in the Junior open Justin Cook was first in the Junior Open, first in Junior Novice 10 to 17 years, won the Junior Overall and a McNeilly Prize Package. Lissie Brew was runner up in the under-17 Duo with Mackenzie Lightwood. Laura Lowe performed for Nelson but is also a Blenheim Club member. She came first in Intermediate Open, first in Rock and Roll under 17 years, first in Intermediate Gospel, won Best Dressed Female under 18 years and was first in Country Group with her group called Mel, Lou, Chris.

Laura Lowe performed for Nelson at the Golden Valley Country Music Awards, but is also a Blenheim Club member. Photo supplied

Helping hands from WW2 This is a group of nurses and soldiers at Marlborough College in 1942; the year the students had to attend classes around different parts of Blenheim, as their classrooms were being used as a medical base for injured and unwell army personnel. The third form class of 1942 recently got together again, 70 years on from that unique school year.

Elsie Simpson, a war nurse is pictured back row in the middle , is 91 years tomorrow. Elsie’s story was published last Wednesday.

‘Mind blowing’ trip Story by Celeste Lodewyk Playing in the snow, a helicopter flight and the chance to meet Shortland Street stars were just a few of the highlights from a recent Cure Kids trip to Queenstown for Ashleigh Neal (9). Ashleigh featured in the Friday Sun last month talking about her fundraising raffle prior to her trip. The Witherlea School student was one of 16 New Zealand children chosen by Cure Kids to receive a weekend trip to Queenstown from June 8 to 10. Each year Cure kids hosts the ‘Ticket to Hope’ weekend for children who suffer from life-threatening illnesses. Accompanied by her mother Kerry Neal, Ashleigh was treated to a fun filled weekend described as “mind blowing”. “The trip was out of this world, the kids were awesome and the organisers were wonderful. “Ashleigh is still on a high from the trip and enjoyed being able to present Cure Kids with a cheque of $640.20. “We wish to thank everyone who purchased a raffle ticket and made a donation,” Kerry says.

Nature’s super fruit

For all of those MasterChef fans out there, one thing that home viewers have learnt is how to create stunning dishes and sauces from exotic fruits and vegetables. One dish which featured in the New Zealand MasterChef was the Stuffed Pork Fillet with Parsnip-Filled Shallots, Swede and Earth Gem Fritter and Tamarillo Sauce. One of these ingredients, the ‘Tamarillo’ tends to evoke a spine tingling shudder in some people, but the reality is that this fruit is fantastic to grow and cook with. They contain good quantities of Vitamins A, B1 and are an excellent source of Vitamins C and E and are rich in iron, potassium and are a good source of fibre. Not to mention they are low in calories and are cholesterol free. A bit of a super food some may say. Tamarillo’s, also known as a tree tomato, is a bright red or golden egg shaped fruit that will reward you with mountains of fruit if planted in the right spot. Tamarillos (Cyphomandra betacea) are generally fairly easy to grow. However, they can be very susceptible to frosts, and also cold winds. For those interested in growing their own Tamarillos, here are some handy hints on where, when and how to plant them. When, where and how to plant: Plant in fertile well-drained soil. In a sunny position away, from strong winds when trees are young. Look for a site in full sun or partial shade, out of any cold winds and frosts. The soil should be light and

Preheat oven to 200C. Line and lightly grease 10-12 muffin cups. Sift together sugar, flour and baking powder.

Tips

In another bowl, combine egg, milk, melted butter and vanilla. Add liquid ingredients to dry ingredients and stir just to combine. Add chopped tamarillos. Pour batter into muffin cups and top with a slice of tamarillo. Bake 16-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean when inserted into the centre of the muffins.

fertile with plenty of organic matter. Don’t dig too much around the plant once it is established, as they tend to be very shallow-rooted. Plant 1m apart if you are planting a few, young trees may need staking. Growing Guide Mulching and supplementary water in summer is essential in dry areas. Tamarillos need good drainage, but they are also sensitive to drought. If you have wet soil, plant on raised mounds to improve drainage. Lack of water limits plant growth, fruit size and yields. Tamarillos are fairly pest and disease resistant, although they can be attacked by aphids, powdery mildew. They are usually fairly short-lived plants often needing to be replaced after five years or so. Tamarillos are heavy feeders. Apply a complete NPK fertiliser to mature trees before spring pruning, one month later and again in February as fruit is developing. Pruning Remove central growing tip once plant has reached 1m high to encourage side branching. This is important as your plant will grow too tall and either fall over or worst of all you can not reach the fruit. Frosts will naturally prune your tree. After frosts, remove old and dead wood. Always remember fruit is formed on the new spring growth therefore, a hard prune will maintain desired shape, size and maximise next seasons fruit. Harvest: When fruit changes to bright red colour in autumn – early winter depending on where you live.

Lucas Simmons (2 years old) helps his grandparents to do everything in the garden. Lots of fun!

• Plant garlic: Buy seed garlic (available from garden centres) or organic, locally grown garlic. • Pop in shallots: A must-have for French cooking, shallots have a sweeter flavour than onions. Plant seed shallots now. Don’t bury them like garlic cloves though, just press them into the soil, pointy end facing up, so their noses are still peeking through slightly. • Harvest leeks: Blanch the stems for soft, pearly white stalks. • Security for sheds: Make sure your shed is secure before you pack it full of spuds or pumpkins, to avoid rodents making it their home. • Turnips: The “Purple Top White Globe” are trendy and tasty. They look so good, like purple-pink ping pong balls! • Sow salads in pots: Sow rocket, mesclun and red-leafed lettuces now, for a quick dinner option. • Tamarillo time: Stake young trees pronto if high winds are a risk. Tamarillos are very brittle and if yours is laden with fruit, it may need a little extra support.

CO-OP taking the headache NAIT is coming, whether we like it or not, but it’s good to see that one cooperative is trying to make it easier for us, said Fraser Macbeth, dairy farmer and LIC shareholder councillor for Tasman/ Marlborough. Farmer-owned cooperative, LIC, is an accredited information provider for the NAIT scheme which comes into effect on 1 July, meaning its herd recording software, MINDA, can provide the animal tagging and movement information NAIT requires, on a farmer’s behalf. “It’s good to see that LIC is working closely with NAIT to take the headache out of compliance for farmers to adapt its systems and give farmers the easiest means of meeting their requirements under these new regulations,” Fraser said. Alternatively, farmers will be required to record all tagging and on/off-farm movements with NAIT directly.

Bull sale season looking good

By Annabelle Latz There are no complaints about the current situation of beef farming from Taimate Angus’s Ossie Hickman, who is gearing up for the annual Taimate Angus Bull Sale on Monday, at 2pm. Ossie, who was born and raised on Taimate, between Seddon and Ward, said this annual sale is a main focus of their farming year for him and his son Paul, who is Ward chairman for Angus New Zealand. Breeding Angus has been happening at Taimate since 1956. There will be 42 Angus bulls in the pens. “It will be the most even line up we have ever had, in terms of quality.” He said the autumn calf sales were very strong this season; a good forecaster for the bull sale season. Roland Barker, president of the Christchurch Hunt, “The beef schedule, like the sheep died this week, aged 80. schedule, has been strong.” Known as Roly, he had been president for the past With the world wide shortage of beef at eight years. the moment, Ossie was confident the prices He farmed most recently on a lifestyle property in will stay strong for some time. The bulls have come through very well, they are in great order.” His progeny is from four bulls, two of whom are based is South Australia, who he has used for the first season. Jimmy and Becky Murray at Matariki Hereford Stud, in the Clarence Valley, have their annual bull sale next Tuesday, June 18, at 1pm. It will be in conjunction with the Woodbank Angus bull sale. Combined, there will be 42 Hereford bulls and 74 Angus bulls. Jimmy said it is a family affair, and one he is really looking forward to.

Three generations of the Murray has now farmed Woodbank, and Jimmy and Becky are passionate about the Hereford stud in Clarence, which their four children Lucy, Jack, Jimmy and Sam are also involved in. Johnny, Rob, George, Ben and Tim Murray are all involved at Woodbank. “It’s a big family thing,” said Jimmy. He said the structure of Matariki is going well, and they are producing good quality carcasses. “It’s a matter of getting everything in the right place.” Matariki Holy Smoke, a home bred sire, has six progeny in next week’s sale as his first season standing. “We have a few quite interesting bulls.” Jimmy described his stock as soft and easy going. “Hereford just seems to be going good; the figures are good, the IMF is good.”

Taking place at Yealands Grovetown Vineyard, about 150 pruners will show off their pruning and tying down skills. They will compete in six classes for eight awards; novice sections, open sections, a team prize, a contracting businesses prize, an overall woman prize, and a Recognised Seasonal Employers (RSE) prize. “The RSE workers are such a large part of our pruning season, it’s good to recognise their work,” said Claire Wilson, Wine Marlborough seasonal labour coordinator. She said pruning is a vital part of the year’s work on any vineyard. Throughout the season the region will employ about 3000 pruners each season, to carry out the work, which runs from May until September. “If we don’t prune, we don’t get the growth to allow for the next year’s harvest.”

Jacqueline MacLaurin gets ready for some pruning. Photo: Celeste Lodewyk

Awards at Silver Secateurs are hotly contested for, and the contracting businesses’ one last year created a lot of fun. Winter weather patterns add potential challenges to a pruning season, with extreme weather conditions making pruning difficult or impossible at times.

“Winter so far has been fantastic.” "We think the event is something to celebrate and it involves a lot of our vineyard workers competing to be the best pruner," said Wine Marlborough General Manager Marcus Pickens. The competition started in 1995.

Pig hunting comp draws closer

Local lad Craig Shaw with his boar entry at last year's Blenheim Toyota Boar Slaying Super Comp.

Marlborough Hunting & Fishing. “Don has been a key figure in the competition and truly believes in what we are doing, and is responsible for many prizes,” Matt says. A highlight of Sunday’s weigh-in will be the guest appearance of Crusaders rugby players and brothers, Luke, Sam, Adam and George Whitelock. “These boys are known to be keen hunters themselves and have said they will be coming along with some of their mates, including newly named All Black Luke Romano,” says Matt. “A mate in Kaikoura, Anton Evans,

organised the contact with George Whitelock and it grew from there. The boys will be a great feature and we encourage the public to come down and meet them.” As part of the competition Matt has introduced a new kid’s category, for the best dressed Crusaders fan. “Get the kids dressed up in Canterbury’s colours and bring them along on Sunday, the winner will be chosen by the Whitelock’s,” Matt says. Entry forms are now available on the Hooked on Boars website, at the Woodbourne Tavern and at Marlborough Hunting & Fishing.

Story and photos by Celeste Lodewyk Throw in some wild pigs, possums and hares with a group of Crusader rugby players, and you have an exciting climax to the Blenheim Toyota Boar Slaying Super Comp which runs July 6, 7 and 8. Presented by Hooked on Boars Magazine published by locals Matt and Lisa Willis, the competition is the largest in New Zealand and sees hunters from all over the country enjoy three days of ‘boar slaying action’. There are three divisions. Open division which judges the heaviest boar, average weight, best tusks and heaviest combined weight. Young Guns division which is open to 10-16 year olds and judges the heaviest boar and heaviest possum. Junior Division which is open to 4-9 year olds and judges the heaviest critter (hare, rabbit or possum). All pigs and critters are weighed in on Sunday between 12noon and 3pm, kindly hosted by Richard, Rowan and Stacey of the Woodbourne Tavern in Renwick. Again this year there will be a kitted out Toyota Hilux pig hunting truck up for grabs as the event’s major (Open Division) spot prize sponsored by Blenheim Toyota. There is also a huge number of other prizes up for grabs in the competition, many of which have been sponsored by, or organised by Don Hansen of

Winter dairy days workshops Helping dairy farmers look ‘beyond the dollars’ at their whole farm system management is the goal of a series of winter dairy workshops being held by the Dairy Women’s Network around New Zealand in June and July. The five workshops are being held in Winton, Rotorua, Cambridge, Hokitika and Nelson at the end of June and beginning of July,a great follow on from the Essential Farm Finance days run by the Network earlier in the year. Ultimately attendees will be able to leave the seminar with an action plan for their own farm for the next 12 months. http://www.dwn.co.nz

Old woodburners and open fires under review High air pollution levels in Blenheim during May mean that the Marlborough District Council must enforce a ban on the installation of new open fires in houses built within the town boundaries from next year. From May 31, 2013, Blenheim residents who rely on open fires and old woodburners are being urged to think seriously about clean heating options. The future use of existing open fires and old woodburners within urban Blenheim is also currently under review as part of the broader review of Council resource management plans. This ruling falls under the Government’s new mandatory National Environmental Standards. Marlborough District Council’s air quality testing recorded exceedances of the national air quality standard on May 23 and May 31 and again this month on June 12. Council’s Environment Committee chairman Peter Jerram said ways to improve the quality of the atmosphere when the temperatures drop need to be found. “As a Council, we don’t have any choice but to enforce this requirement; no building permits can be issued to install an open fire inside a new, or existing, Blenheim house after May 31 next year.” Nelson has banned the use of open

The white heron on the Taylor River

White heron reappears The white heron of Taylor River has made it’s annual reappearance. Gerry Ten Broeke was walking his dog Jack on Sunday, when he spotted the elusive bird and managed to catch a quick pic. “Apparently there’s only one white heron that seems to come back to the river every year,” he said. “I was quite amazed.” Jack showed a bit of interest, heading down to the riverside

goes out for public consultation. At a glance: In the Regional Policy Statement review, the Council is proposing to: • Ban the use of existing indoor open fires • Phase out the use of solid fuel burners that are more than 15 years old • Ban all outdoor burning in the Blenheim airshed (urban area) • Allow the installation of only those new multi-fuel burners which comply with the National Environmental Standards. More information about both these schemes is available on the Marlborough District Council website www.marlborough.govt.nz

fires since 2008 and Christchurch followed suite in 2010. Blenheim exceeded its air standard six times from July to August last winter, also experiencing the highest levels of pollution ever recorded here. The first two exceedances of 2012 were recorded in May. “This is an urban issue, and does not apply to houses in the country. We’re just talking about open fires and old woodburners in Blenheim itself – the pollution stems from the concentration of population and is not an issue in rural Marlborough,” said Councillor Jerram. The public will get the opportunity to make submissions on that proposal when the Regional Policy Statement

Gerry said the white heron seems to be a bit rarer around these parts than some of it’s blue relatives which can be seen near the Wither Hills. Photo supplied.

The most recent Marlborough Sounds perception survey has come back with similar results to one conducted in 2001, with one important difference. Corydon Consultants were commissioned by the Marlborough District Council to conduct a nationwide phone survey of 1534 people during February and March this year. This included a ‘booster’ of 331 Marlborough residents. Of the Marlborough respondents,

The TAB has opened Campbell at $500 to win this week, the highest odds for any player at the competition. The 112th US Open is being played at the Olympic Club in San Francisco and will kick off Friday morning (NZT).

Flotilla crew recount their London experience By Robbie Parkes Having just returned from their trip down the Thames, the Marlborough Boys’ College rowing crew recount their experiences of London, meeting John Key and seeing Kate Middleton. The boys rowed Ron Perano’s replica whaling boat SwiftSure in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee flotilla down the Thames River earlier this month. Hayden Beavis, Connor Irving, Harrison Somerville, Troy Gilmore, Mitchell Avery and Tom Wilson were selected earlier in the year as the lucky crew to be heading to London. After a $100,000 fundraising effort the six-strong crew made their way to England for a 10-day stint to represent New Zealand in the celebrations. The boys said they were pretty overwhelmed by the whole experience. “I don’t think we realised how big it was until we saw ourselves on TV,” said Mitchell. They all agreed it was an extremely memorable time and it was a big deal coming from New Zealand. Even John Key came to talk to the boys and wish them luck before the big day. “Being from Marlborough as well, it’s a big honour,” said Mitchell. “Usually this goes to people from Auckland and Christchurch.” “It means a lot, it’s been an experience we’ll never forget,” said Hayden. Not many people from New Zealand could say they’ve done it, he said.

They also agreed that seeing the Queen and Kate Middleton were the highlights of the trip. They said the atmosphere was amazing, especially with so many people yelling and watching. “They got the odd roar from Kiwis,” said Bill. As they went under Tower Bridge, the crew did a bit of a

Maori chant too. The boys got to go sightseeing and shopping in their spare time, the Tower of London being a memorable destination. Coach Bill Campbell said it was a great trip and they really worked hard to get there. “It’s hard to take in really, the volume of what it’s all about,”

he said. “We were extremely lucky to be the chosen ones for the trip.” The boys got a huge welcome when they came home and getting back into life in Marlborough does have its challenges. “London’s so massive and Blenheim’s just Blenheim,” said Mitchell.
