Story and photo by Cathie Bell Marlborough’s biggest party went off like a rocket, but the positive effects were felt all weekend. The 2016 Marlborough Wine and Food Festival sold out its 8000 tickets, and the day was fine and warm, as usual. The festival has yet to have a rainy day, Wine Marlborough organisers say. Many of the people at the festival said it was on their bucket list and they would be back again.

Region full Continued from page 1 Some people had made a long weekend of it, coming in to Marlborough on Thursday or Friday and staying till Sunday so that they could enjoy even more of what the district had to offer. The Marlborough Wine and Food Festival was held for the 32nd time last weekend, but the event was as fresh as ever, punters say. Girls on Tour spokeswoman “Scarlett” says the group of 26 women have attended each year for the past 25 years, and they love it. All of them come from outside Marlborough, and when they arrive on the Friday before the event, they don their movie star names and carry out the group traditions, including a fashion show and initiation for newcomers. “We had one newbie this year: she

had to kiss a fireman at the entry to the festival. Turns out they had a newbie too and he had to kiss all of us.” Motel Association president Richie Dickens says there was no spare accommodation over the weekend, with motels full over the weekend. Many had been booked out months in advance. “It’s a pretty busy time. It’s great for the region.” Blenheim Business Association chairman Tim Thomas says the festival was a “massive” event. The 8000 people attending the festival were twice the population of Picton. “We traded very well over the course of the weekend.” Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman says the festival connects the dots between two of the big

people from all over the world. “This year was better than ever and Marlborough was absolutely humming with our festival visitors - so retailers, restaurants and accommodation providers should be very happy indeed.”

Visitors to Marlborough rave about their day The Blenheim Sun asked visitors to Marlborough at the 2016 Wine and Food Festival what they thought of Marlborough and the big event.

We’ve come to Marlborough for a wedding last Saturday, we had to come to the Wine and Food Festival. It’s a great country, a great day out. Well worth the 12,500 kilometres to be here.

We’re going to do it every two years now with the girls, and every four years with our men. This is much better, it’s all in one place. We like that.

Catholics gather for new parish By Cathie Bell Catholics from around Marlborough gathered to celebrate the promulgation Mass to officially form the new Te Whetu o Te Moana Star of the Sea parish on Sunday. About 500 people sat under the trees by St Mary’s church in Blenheim for the Mass, said by Wellington archdiocese vicar-general Monsignor Gerry Burns, Passionist Order council member Father John Pearce, parish priest Father Pat McIndoe and assistant parish priest Father Giltus Mathias. Father Eric Urlich was also there, and Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman also attended. Representatives from each of the seven communities making up the new parish lit candles at

the start of the service to represent their areas, and then using those candles to light one large new candle. Monsignor Gerry says the new parish carried an ancient name. Mary, as the star of the sea, provides a shining light for a community in hikoi, travelling towards God’s kingdom. The merging of the parishes is a time for remembering those who built the parishes, he says, reminding people of the more than 150 years of Catholic history in Marlborough, starting with whaler John Guard taking his child from Port Underwood to Sydney to be baptised well before there were priests or churches in Marlborough. Te Whetu o Te Moana Star of the Sea parish combines St Joseph’s in Picton, Sacred Heart in Havelock,

Hospital rebuilding starts Earthquake-strengthening work has started on the Arthur Wicks building at Wairau Hospital. The building houses the emergency department, which will remain open through the nine months of strengthening work. Patrick Ng, NMDHB General Manager - IT & Infrastructure, says the project involves internal and external seismic strengthening work and an office fitout on the upper floor of the Arthur Wicks building. Approximately 30 non-clinical staff from the upper level have moved.

Rain relief possible River water levels have dropped after a fortnight of dry, hot February weather, Marlborough District Council water scientists say. Council water staff say flow reductions may be necessary again and ask Renwick residents to reduce their daily water use just a little more as this will help slow the rate of aquifer level reduction. Wairau River flows are very low, and if there isn’t significant rain this week, the Southern Valleys Irrigation Scheme is likely to be shut off.

Omaka Landing to take off By Cathie Bell Work will start on the stormwater and access roads to the new Omaka Landing subdivision this week, developer Mark Davis says. The subdivision is at Burleigh, on the Colonial Vineyard site on New Renwick Road. Mark says 70 per cent of the sections in the first stage of

the subdivision have sold, and resource consents have been approved by the Marlborough District Council. The first homes could be in by the end of the year, he says. Work will be around the outside of the site, with the grape vines on the site staying until harvest. The vines will then be removed and housing work will

start. “It’s very exciting…It’s been a long time as a project.” Demand for the sections has been very strong, with more than half selling within two weeks of hitting the market, Mark says. Only nine of the 34 residential sections in the first stage remain on the market. “It’s a pretty prime location,

with easy access to Taylor River Reserve and schools. Being close to the golf course and in the Fairhall School zone also seem to be key selling points “It will be linked up to all the walking and cycling trails from day one, so kids can bike to school along the river, and families can easily and safely access the river.”

Tern talk Marlborough people can get an insight into the activities of the Caspian tern around the top of the South when Nelson man Willie Cook speaks at the Marlborough Forest and Bird meeting in Blenheim tomorrow. The Caspian tern is found around most of the world’s coastlines but it is rated as a “nationally vulnerable” New Zealand bird. Most reported sightings occur around Auckland, Willie, who has studied the birds’ movements for the past 15 years, says. At the meeting, he will explain the latest results that expand on what we know about the biology and life cycle of these birds. The meeting starts at 7.30pm in the Blenheim School hall. Caspian terns are large birds weighing about 700 grams, have distinctive black caps, bright red beaks and metre-long wing spans. They can be seen around the shoreline foraging on small fish. Laddie’s Hospice bequest By Celeste Alexander The final hugs and thank you’s were shared last Wednesday when Hospice Marlborough staff met with the family and friends of Alan (Laddie) Hope. Laddie had bequeathed $190,017 to the Hospice which came from the estate sale of his house in October last year. Laddie’s brother Leo met with Hospice fundraising coordinator Sandi Inwood and Trust chairperson Peter Tolan who wanted to personally share their gratitude for the bequest. Peter explained how the money would be used by Hos-

pice Marlborough and how it would continue to benefit the organisation for many years to come. “We like to make sure the family and the community know how much the Hospice will benefit from this bequest. “We invest the money in our Hospice Marlborough Foundation and use the interest that is earned. This enables a bequest such as Laddie’s to benefit us for years to come, which could be 10, 20 or more,” he says. According to Leo it was a ‘wonderful way’ for Laddie to be remembered.

Cheque presented, ashes scattered Story and photos by Celeste Alexander It was a heartfelt and emotional day for the staff of Blenheim’s Farmers store last Wednesday as they presented a cheque for $19,389 to Hospice Marlborough. In the five weeks leading up to Christmas last year the store hosted its Tree of Remembrance and invited customers to make a donation to support the Hospice. Customers who made a donation received a card which they wrote on a personal message to someone they wanted to remember, then the card was hung on the tree. According to Blenheim Farmers store manager Karen Stewart the staff were very excited to be part of the fundraising campaign, as many have had a direct relationship with Hospice supporting a loved one, and family going through a terminal illness. Hospice Marlborough CEO Jude Dellebeke says she herself spent time at the Remembrance Tree and was blown away by the response. “There were some people who sat and pondered for half an hour what they would write on their cards. I could tell it meant a great deal to many,” she says. Once the campaign had ended all of the remembrance cards were burned and the ashes were placed in an urn. Hospice staff member Sarah Hammond scattered the ashes throughout the grounds and over the rose gardens after the cheque ceremony, while Jude read a poem titled ‘The Bridge’ written by Joy Cowley.

Yes, indeed. It’s fantastic for the region. I think it’s great for Marlborough’s economy, personally as an ex-business owner, it brings people to town.

Yes, it’s a good way to showcase Marlborough.

Yes, it’s a good way to promote the region.

It’s amazing.

Most definitely, it’s awesome. The security gets a little overboard, but by the end of the day, you can see why.

New $ 6M Picton Library Hub Dear Ed, How original to base the design/appearance of the new Council Library Hub in a Port Town on the shape of a ship. The timber cladding on the outside reminds the onlooker of the “Edwin Fox” on the foreshore and I’m certain that if a protective roof is added (as it is at the Edwin Fox) in approximately 15 years time (designed by a local engineering firm), the building would last its expected life span of 35 years. Picton will have another museum piece which could be called “Edwin Fox II on High”. But this is OK as Council is not building this structure on the foreshore but on Upper High Street – which was neglected by our Municipal Fathers for decades. Kurt A. Trixl

Dear Ed, Just reading your paper that we received and reading Colin Geertson’s letter, page six about promoting walking, as well who not only bike to work, but also including those who walk to work. I quite agree with the man. Why discriminated against those who walk? Further more, as mentioned, we receive our Sun about midday on Wednesday’s, yet I noticed in the same paper, page 19 in the Sportinbrief, an article advertising Go By Bike Day today and offering free breakfast and coffee outside BNZ between 7am - 9am. Don’t you think it’s a bit late to advertise this? After all, that was early that morning before the paper was even put in the letter boxes. Not a fair go.

Dear Ed, Stuart Smith should stop preening and patting himself on the back about the replacement bridge for Grove Road. (Just a waste of taxpayers’ monies, but what’s new). Instead he should be putting all his efforts into a TRUCK BY-PASS, Grovetown to Montana corner. Government have said trucks can be heavier and longer but they have difficulty, even now, negotiating the two small roundabouts in Grove Road and the railway roundabout. Do that and the truckies might even vote for you, but they will certainly thank you. Colin Geertson

Poor advertising Dear Ed, I too feel the advertising for the events such as Market Day are very poorly advertised. It’s amazing how many people I myself spoke to that knew nothing about it. About the only ads I spotted were shops advertising their wares and the tiny ad in the Marlborough Express pamphlet about wine week and the festival etc. Surely it wouldn’t hurt to put some larger ads in the small papers. Another thing in regards to festival week are the dressed up windows in the town and the competition for the best window display. Many years ago, there also used to be a promotion for the public so they too could have their vote. Pity whoever runs it didn’t bring this idea back, then put all the people’s votes into a box and draw out two or three names and give those people a prize too! Maybe the radio stations might like to be in on it to help participate. Wake up Marlborough

Debbie Harper When Debbie Harper first took over the French Essence Cafe in Redwoodtown she says there were two motivating factors. One being for the ‘lifestyle’ and the other being the interaction with people. It has now been 16 months and it’s been great she says, and with the soon-to-be opening of the new Countdown Supermarket right opposite, it’s only going to get better. “The cafe is so much more visible now and in a way has put

us on the map and already there are more people coming in, more smiling faces for us to meet and get to know,” she says. What makes French Essence Cafe so popular with its customers is the opening hours, its range of gluten free food available and of course the children’s playground. “We open at 8am, are open seven days a week and our menu board is available all day. Our cabinet food, including our gluten free, is baked in our kitchen,” she says.

The cafe is also available for private functions, catering and we bake and ice cakes.

We listen to the customer to provide the

best options to see as efficiently as possible. We have systems in place that see us work with them from the first enquiry through to job completion. Will Power Electrical Ltd specialises in new homes, renovations, alterations and heatpumps servicing and installations, as well as electrical checks, new wiring and repairs. Council meets on year ahead

Raupo Riverside Cafe & Restaurant Bienvenue, and welcome to Raupo Riverside Cafe & Restaurant. It has been an ‘incredible’ summer for business owners Stephane Ughetto and Taryn Gilbert who have had a very busy Christmas and New Year holiday period. Stephane says January 2 was his busiest day since purchasing the business in 2014, with around 700 people through the doors and 500 coffees served. “We have never been that busy, it was incredible,” he smiles. Situated in the heart of Blenheim, Raupo Riverside Cafe & Restaurant has carved a niche for itself in the hospitality market, combining both the cafe style day service and a specialty French patisserie, Le Delice, with European style evening dining. “People really love the location and regularly comment on their experiences which is always nice to hear,” Stephane says. The evolving menu has been a source of pride for Stephane who has been implementing his own French culture into the business. “We are always tweaking,” he laughs. “Seeing what works, taking on board what our customers are saying and of course always striving for the best service we can offer,” he says.

Le Delice which is located near the entrance is going strong, particularly in the last six months, he says. This is the customer’s first French experience upon entering but certainly not their last. The decor, the French music played in the evenings and of course the influence found within the food continues to delight. Stephane says he is currently working on the new menu which he plans to introduce toward the end of March. “Through this menu we will be giving ourselves a bit more identity with more French influence which I am very excited about. “I like to keep the menu fresh and interesting,” he smiles. Raupo Riverside Cafe & Restaurant has a number of seating options. Outside customers can enjoy the view of the Taylor River on the terrace which has recently been extended and can seat up to 70. The inside dining area can cater to a maximum of 178, and upstairs in the private dining area up to 30 can be seated. Raupo Riverside Cafe & Restaurant is a popular choice for group bookings and private events, so speak to staff about what they can do for your next special celebration.

Stephane’s recommendations From the patisserie: The savoury scones, carrot cake and the fruit Louise with shredded coconut are always a delight. Breakfast: French toast served with crispy bacon, banana, maple syrup and mascarpone. Brunch: Lamb burger or one of our homemade bagels. Lunch: Steak sandwich. Dinner: Pork belly. Dessert: Chocolate brownie or the gingerSweet and savoury scones. bread sundae.

By Cathie Bell Marlborough District Councillors face a year of hard work, Marlborough mayor Alistair An exciting Asian flavour adventure Sowman says. He met with all councillors on Monday for the first of what will be a monthly series of workshops. The workshops are something councillors want to do on a more regular basis, he says. “We get together as a group, so that councillors have clear understanding of the challenges going forward and have clear communications with constituents. “There are no surprises, everyone understands what’s involved, all get an opportunity to contribLunch: Wed - Sun, 11am-2pm ute, all understand the huge tasks year. 5.00pm onwards Dinner:this Everyday, something haven’t-done Takeaway “It’s & Delivery fromwe4:30pm 9pm before. Alistair Sowman year…Marlborough is doing very well at the moment.” Since last year, the council had been planning, Alistair says. “I think this year people will see the doing. There are lots of things on the drawing boards.” The biggest project is the adoption of the council’s Environment Plan, setting out rules for development in the district. The notification of the plan for

public submissions has been delayed until March to enable some “user-testing”, Alistair says. “There will be criticism about the delay, but it has to be done properly.” The theatre trust will be drawing down on the council’s underwriting, he says, but councillors were assured it was on track for completion in time for the first show in March. Water is a big focus for council, Alistair says, with key infrastructure projects around water, including freshwater supply in Picton, Havelock, Renwick, and Seddon, as well as more storage for Blenheim on the Wither Hills. Picton’s sewerage project continues, and the new riverside park in High Street was in planning, as well as the “sports hub” at Lansdowne Park and decisions over the future of the old Floor-

Pride Civic Theatre in Arthur Street that had been offered to the Primary Health Organisation and the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board to expand the “health hub” in Queen Street. The council couldn’t afford to let the pending elections in October overshadow the business it has to do, Alistair says. “There are more things out there that councillors need to be involved in, the plan being the key one, but other things that require councillors’ attention as well. “I would be extremely disappointed if electioneering dominated discussions.” He has not decided whether he will stand again, Alistair says. “I’m certainly considering whether the time is right. It’s been a very interesting journey.”

Welcome to the world baby Ruby

Continued from page 1 “We had a great Christmas with family and a quiet New Year but late on January 1 Aimee began experiencing a few pains. “It all kicked off on the third and before we knew it our beautiful baby girl was in our

arms,” he says. Trevor jokes that baby Ruby “broke every line of their birthing plan”. “We planned for a water birth in Paraparaumu but ended up having Ruby in the South Island by caesarean section,” he laughs.

The inspiration behind Ruby’s name came from her great great grandmother Eileen Ruby Norris and great great great grandmother Constance Ruby Kidson who was known as Ruby all her life. The couple say once they are discharged from hospital they

are in no rush to return home and plan to stay with family while Aimee-Lee recovers. “We are so besotted with Ruby, it’s just amazing to have her here. “We are both looking forward to enjoying our little girl,” Trevor says.

Intruder in girl’s alarms police Police are searching for a man who was found in the bed of a girl during a suspected burglary on New Year’s Day. Police are investigating after the Budge Street incident that occurred around 4am on January 1. Detective Wayne Fransen says an unknown male has entered an address while the occupants were sleeping. He was then found in a girl’s bed by one of the occupants of the house who immediately

intervened. During the scuffle the intruder received cuts to his hand and arm before he fled the scene, running west on Budge Street, past Super Cheap Auto. Detective Fransen says police are now looking for a dark skinned male, possibly Polynesian, about 174cm in height with a shaved head. He was wearing a dark blue top with red lines around the middle that go all the way

around the body and had long sleeves with a zip up front, knee length shorts possibly black and wearing cream coloured jandals. The circumstances of this offending is clearly of concern to police who are appealing to the community for help in identifying this person. Foods to aid sleep Foods that may aid a better sleep - what better excuse to get creative with evening meals. • Cherries have natural melatonin in them that help you fall asleep at night. Cherries also can help regulate your internal clock which tells you when it’s time for bed. • Bananas are packed with potassium and magnesium which act as a muscle relaxant and calm your body for sleep. On top of that, bananas have vitamin B6 and it turns into the hormone melatonin, which gives you a better night’s sleep. • Most dairy products, like milk, are very rich in melatonin and they help you get a good night’s sleep. However some say that having a warm glass of milk at night is all psychological. If it was something that you did as a child then warm milk could trigger those good childhood memories. Either way it looks like

this food will be great all around for a better night’s rest. • The grains in oatmeal is just as great for sleep as it is for breakfast. The oatmeal grains trigger insulin production. When your blood sugar increases at night, it makes you begin to feel tired and ready for bed. • Try making jasmine rice a few hours before you plan on going to bed. Having rice for dinner can cut down on the amount of time it takes you to fall asleep. Jasmine rice has high-glycemic-index (GI) and helps your body relax at night. • Sweet potatoes can be your dream come true. Sweet potatoes contain high levels of potassium that acts as a muscle relaxant. They also have complex carbs that slowly digest and then release healing energy while you sleep.

Don’t break your heart, keep it healthy You have an important role to play in your health. The choices you make every day can change your risk of heart disease. There are many factors that work together to influence your risk of heart disease. Some of these risk factors can be changed, while others cannot. Your age, gender, ethnicity, and family history of heart disease are beyond your control. However there are some factors that you can change, such as your blood pressure, your cholesterol, what you eat and drink, if you smoke, and how much you move. You are the key to managing these risks and taking the appropriate steps to ensure your heart is in good health. Here are just few things to consider. Become smokefree: If you smoke, becoming smokefree is the single most important thing you can do for your heart health. Manage your blood pressure: By managing your blood pressure, you can lower your risk of heart attack or stroke. Manage your cholesterol: By managing your cholesterol, you can lower your risk of heart attack or stroke. Manage diabetes: If you have diabetes, managing it can lower your risk of a heart

attack or stroke. Move more: Moving more is key to having a healthy heart and managing your risk. Make heart healthy eating and drinking choices: Taking steps to change what you eat and drink can help you manage your risk. Reach a healthy weight: Managing your weight can help you manage your risk. Manage stress: Recognising how you are feeling is an important first step in managing stress. You may like to write down any concerns you may have and take them to your next appointment so you can discuss with your doctor or nurse.

Visitors, locals wind down Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Sunday’s Wine & Food Wind Down event at the Vines Village proved to be a huge hit with locals and visitors. The sun was out and everywhere people were smiling and enjoying the many things on offer. Families flocked to the children’s activities and live entertainment, while visitors in town for the Wine & Food Festival enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, gourmet food and wine tasting. Wellington couple Sabrina Young and Matthew White returned this year for both the festival and Wind Down event. “We heard about the Wind Down event and came to the first one last year and loved it so

much that we had to come back again. “It’s such a great day and very chilled out,” Sabrina says. The Vines Village co-director Jeff Fulton was happy with how the day went. “It was fantastic. A sweltering hot day but we had lots of families and visitors and the atmosphere was nice and relaxed. “Some of the feedback we got was that some people didn’t realise the Wine & Food Festival was R18, so they loved that there was this event they could bring their children too. That’s exactly what we focus on, a free family-orientated day that anyone can enjoy. “Going forward we will look to build on what we have now and hope to make it an annual event,” he says.

Introduced wasps in the top of the South Island are to be hit by the Department of Conservation, as it expands its wasp control operations using the new wasp bait Vespex. Vespex is a protein bait targeted only at wasps and is not attractive to bees. It was successfully piloted at five public conservation land sites in the South Island last year, reducing wasp activity at those sites by more than 95 per cent. DOC scientist Eric Edwards says this year the Department will be using Vespex in priority areas where wasps are a threat to native wildlife or present a high nuisance factor. In the next few weeks DOC and its partners plan to bait wasps over 7,000 hectares at more than 30 sites. This includes sites in the Marlborough

Sounds, Pelorus Bridge and Nelson Lakes area, as well as in the Abel Tasman National Park. Eric says previously DOC staff could only respond to the wasp threat by locating and destroying individual nests, which is dangerous and time consuming. “This bait station method means that the wasps can be controlled over a wider area because they take the insecticide back to their nests to feed their larvae. “Many nests can be destroyed from a single bait station.” Vespex was developed by Nelson based consultancy Merchento in conjunction with DOC, and was recently made available for public use.

It is not likely that either the world renowned brand of Tolkowsky Diamond Jewellery or Antwerp Diamond Brokers will be seen in Blenheim again after we close. Tolkowsky Jewellery is manufactured and promoted by Jean-Paul Tolkowsky (the son of Gabriel Tolkowsky - the cutter of the World’s largest flawless diamond) and the great nephew of Marcel Tolkowsky who invented and perfected the ideal diamond cut. This premium brand is exclusive to Nationwide Jewellers with seven outlets in New Zealand and any official stockist has to be vetted and approved by Tolkowsky. With the legendary Gabi Tolkowsky in 2008. Antwerp Diamond Brokers source diamonds directly from Antwerp with access to some of the world’s best Site Holders. This also is exclusive to Nationwide and the retailer must reach a very high standard and be officially approved before certification is presented at HRD (the High Diamond Council) in Antwerp, Belgium. If you Google either the Tolkowsky or the HRD websites you will appreciate the honour that we have had in retailing the jewellery and personally sourcing the diamonds for our clients. We still have five exclusive pieces of Tolkowsky and seven loose diamonds remaining including some unique Gabriel Tolkowsky-cut stones.

Third time the charm By Cathie Bell Blenheim multisport athlete Ian Martella has achieved one of his aims on his third try – achieving a win in the open men’s category second place in his Coast to Coast event. Teamed with David Hansen as the Pilsner Boys, the two men entered the two-day team open mens’ category, and won it, coming second overall of all the two-day teams – “despite me being 42,” Ian says. Previous years had seen him come fourth in his category; the first year, achieving 13th overall, and last year, sixth overall. “I’d been trying to win it. This year, I was confident we were going to go well, in our category. We were hyped up, we had high expectations.”

inbrief

He’s not ruling out doing it again. “I’m not sure what category yet, but I certainly am looking at it. “There’s something about the event. It’s a rite of passage for Kiwis. It’s fairly competitive, there’s professional athletes doing it, but the camaraderie is fantastic. I think that sets it aside from any other events I’ve done.” Ian says a few people from Blenheim were in the Coast to Coast, competing in different events. Other Marlborough participants included Nicholas Hill, Peter Mann, Josh Scott, and Sarah McAllister.

Muster Day

Marlborough Football’s Muster Day (Junior Football Club Registration Day) is on Saturday March 6. All new and existing players are asked to sign up and register to any of the clubs: Redwood FC, Rangers AFC, Trojans AFC, Blenheim Valley FC, and Renwick FC upstairs in the pavilion at the A&P Showgrounds on the day between 9am and 12 noon.

Skate along to open days Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Three years ago Renwick School student Erin Green was given a pair of roller skates and went along to a public day at the Blenheim Roller Skating Club. Today she is competing at national speed skating championships and says she has found a sport she really loves. “I think a lot of other kids would love it too if they gave it a go,” she says. Erin’s mother Roxanne Green is also an avid supporter of the club and says the Blenheim track is one of the only ‘bank tracks’ in the country. “It would be great to host national and regional events here. Blenheim has a number of fantastic locations to skate, we really are very lucky here,” she says. The club is looking to grow its numbers and support persons and to do this it will be holding a number of fun public events. The first is this Friday, a ‘Back to School

Disco’ evening from 6pm - 8pm at the skating rink on Stephenson Street, beside the hockey turf. It will give the public an opportunity to meet club members, try skating for themselves, see the new skates available for the club’s public sessions and enjoy a sausage sizzle, spot prizes and refreshments. The cost is only $2 per person with their own skates, or $5 to hire the club’s skates. Then on Sunday the public sessions will begin where people can also go along, try skating for themselves and find out more about joining. The next big skating event will be the ‘Top of the South Tour’ held March 12 and 13. The tour will be alternated between Nelson and Blenheim, and is open to all ages and skating abilities. To find out more visit the club on Friday or Sunday.

Blenheim Masters swimmers had another successful weekend ocean swimming, bringing home 5 medals. Seven swimmers made the journey to Corsair Bay in Lyttleton to take part in the fourth event in the New Zealand Ocean Swim Series, the “Christchurch Crown”. In the 1km event Judy Hegglun brought home gold despite a few kicks to the head during the swim. First Marlborough swimmer in was Paul Sell in a time of 41.13 (22nd), followed by Jodie Lovell in 42.07 (31st), Pete Colbert in 45.50 (71st) and Phil Jeffs in 47.03 (90th). Paddon and Kennard make history in Sweden Top Kiwi rally driver Hayden Paddon has made history with his co-driver, former Blenheim man, John Kennard by finishing in second place in Rally Sweden on Sunday. Hayden is the first non-European driver to finish on the podium on the snow rally which is traditionally dominated by Scandinavian drivers and is now one of only seven non-Scandinavian drivers to have secured second place finishes on this World Rally Championship event. He says he and John were really happy to finish second. “It’s much more than we expected at this rally so to bring it home safely is a big relief. We had a small scare on the last stage which kept it interesting right to the end. “That late drama aside, we have had a good weekend and I have felt very comfortable in the New Generation i20 WRC. We made the most of our road position when we had to, and refused to get drawn into a fight for the lead. “It’s a great result for the team.” The history-making result moves Hayden into fourth equal on the WRC drivers’ championship points-table – his highest-ever championship position to date – and also marks the second consecutive podium finish

Team Principal Michel Nandan says that to come away with a podium result in Sweden is fantastic. “Congratulations to Hayden and John - and to everyone in the team for a job well done. We had a few nervous moments at the end of the Power Stage when Hayden experienced a water leak from the radiator, but thankfully some quick thinking allowed him to make it back safely.”
