Fire fear By Cathie Bell Marlborough has been lucky so far, but people need to be aware there is a high risk right now, Marlborough’s top firefighter says. Marlborough Rural Fire Authority principal fire officer Richard MacNamara says we have caught fires so far but there is a time when we may not be good enough. He says people need to be aware of the risks and it is high risk at the moment. “The risk will remain until we get a lot more rain.” Two fires were lit over the weekend on the Wither Hills, and it was only the efforts of firefighters and helicopter pilots who stopped it from taking off like the Boxing Day Fires in 2000.

Fire fear as dry hills burn Continued from page 1 After two fires, Richard says there is ‘no doubt the fires are being deliberately lit’. “The situation is dangerous and we’ve now had to put fire crews on standby.” The first fire broke out about 1.30pm on Saturday near Forest Park Drive and the second fire broke out about 7pm on Sunday near Taylor Pass Road. Marlborough Police Area Commander Inspector Simon Feltham urges anyone with information about suspicious activity in the area to come forward. Police are liaising with the Rural Fire Authority to investigate the fires. Anyone with information should

call Blenheim Police Ph 5785279 or Crimestoppers Ph 0800 555 111. Richard says the situation in Marlborough is now ‘extremely disturbing’. “Clearly someone is lighting these fires. The conditions are extreme; the wind is up and the hills are bone dry. If this person is not caught quickly, there is huge potential for a very serious fire,” he says. In the Boxing Day fires in 2000 about 7000 hectares of grassland was destroyed when the Wither Hills were on fire for several days. Angela breaks world record again By Cathie Bell Champion mussel opener Angela Fredericks has done it again, making a new world record opening 100 mussels at the Havelock Mussel and Seafood Festival. The Kono mussel opener blitzed the field, retaining her crown and breaking the record she achieved last year. Last year, she set a world record of 1 minute 57 seconds set at the festival and this year, she did it in 1 minute and 56 seconds. Angela says it was great to have another win, and to beat her own record was ‘awesome’. “I was just as nervous as every other time, it was just like the very first time. “I had some very vocal support from Kono whanau which was awesome. Water scheme gets funding

inbrief

By Cathie Bell T he Gover n ment has put $895,000 towards the work being done to build an irrigation scheme in Flaxbourne. At a ceremony yesterday at Yealands Wine Company in Seddon, Minister for Primary Industries Nathan Guy says the proposed Flaxbourne Community Irrigation Scheme had the potential to add $15 million to the Marlborough economy. A member of the Flaxbourne Community Irrigation Scheme, Peter Yealands says that when he came to Seddon in early 2000, the eight farms that now make up his estate were earning about $1 million a year. “Today that same bit of land is generating in excess of $100 million. “It shows what a bit of water and intensification can do.”

Book festival

Flaxbourne landowner John Hickman says he has 25 hectares of vineyard, which is three per cent of his land but 40 per cent of gross return. “It shows what you can achieve, why we have such a driver for this.” Nathan says the funding, from the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Irrigation Acceleration Fund, will help the Marlborough District Council complete concept designs, finalise funding arrangements, and begin the detailed design phase for the storage dam. “Providing a reliable water supply for growers has major potential to boost growth, creating jobs and exports. “This is especially important in Marlborough given the serious drought the region has suffered over the past 18 months.” The Flaxbourne Community Irrigation Scheme proposes to

Schools to cut sugar? Nelson Marlborough Health CEO Chris Fleming encourages school principals and chairs to accept the call to remove sugary drinks from schools. Head of the Ministry of Education Peter Hughes, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, asked all school leaders to consider becoming a ‘wateronly school’. Chris says many schools in Marlborough and Nelson offer sugary drinks for sale. He says the effects to children’s health can be devastating. “This is why Nelson Marlborough Health was the first district health board to remove sugary, artificiallysweetened and corrosive drinks from our cafes, shops and patient meals.”

Local family buys old convent By Cathie Bell The Old St Mary’s Convent in Rapaura Road has sold, and will be turned into a luxury lodge. Marlborough Tour Company owner operator Chris Godsiff confirmed yesterday his family has bought the boutique hotel, and would be taking possession on May 1. ‘The Marlborough Lodge’ will open for business in October, and is being established in the former bed and breakfast, Old St Mary’s Convent. The property will undergo a major refurbishment from May onwards, including increasing accommodation capacity from five to 10 rooms and offering evening dining, courtesy of an in-house chef team. Chris says his family-owned business has been looking to get into the luxury accommodation market for a long time and is very excited by the acquisition. “There is a gap in the market for a luxury lodge accommodation among Marlborough’s vineyards, and we’re very pleased to be filling it.”

Wood work thriller Blenheim School’s new entrants class is looking forward to hammering their present from the Blenheim Menz Shed. The Menz Shed built a new woodwork table for the Koru class, and it was delivered to the classroom on Friday last week, much to the delight of the children. Menz Shed vice chairman David Oliver says the group was delighted to be able to give the students a table. It was a combined effort, he said, with about

four members having worked on it, while he was project manager. “It was a bit complex to finish, as the site was busy with the extension for metalwork being built.” The 10 children in Koru class were thrilled with the table, with many keen to try it out right away. Teacher Gill Caughey says Bunnings has offered to provide tools and wood for the students to use.

Blenheim Sun publisher Les Whiteside and emerging business winner Radek Baran of Go Green LED Lighting.

Supreme winner By Cathie Bell Serving the finest Marlborough food and wine has seen Arbour win the customer service award and the supreme business award at the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce’s business excellence awards. The Fairhall restaurant took out the top award, announced at a gala dinner held at the Marlborough Convention Centre last Friday night. Co-owner Liz Buttimore says she and partner Bradley Horne had a business plan for the restaurant, and used the awards’ judging process to see how they had progressed against that plan. With “a million things on the go”, food businesses could spend “months without feet on the ground”, she says and it would be easy to get off track if they didn’t have a business plan to check with. Liz says the couple felt they have so much support from the Marlborough community and were very lucky. “Marlborough is like a dream for us. As a Kiwi moving to this region, I feel I’ve found my home. I find this a vibrant community. I’m so glad we made our move here. We’re very lucky people.” Go Green LED Lighting won two awards, the Blenheim Sun emerging business award and the NZ King Salmon environment business award. Owner Radan Borek says winning two awards was “like a dream”. About 200 guests attended the dinner with former TVNZ sports presenter Geoff Bryan the MC for the evening.

Chamber vice-president Chris Godsiff says all the entrants are winners simply by entering and working through the process. Chris says that process gives all business owners an opportunity to look into their business and see where any improvements could be made. “The judges commented that the entries were of a very high standard, making decisions challenging.” He thanked the sponsors and entrants for making the 2016 Business Excellence Awards a celebration of success. Photos from Matt Flynn’s recent deployment to Tasmaina. Photos provided.

DOC ranger and firefighter

Renwick man Matt Flynn recently returned from Tasmania where he served as a task force leader of firefighting crews, battling blazes in what has been described as one of the state’s worst bushfire seasons. He sits down with reporter Celeste Alexander and shares his experiences and how he became involved in firefighting. At home Matt is the father of two young children, a part time gunsmith and a senior ranger for the Department of Conservation, taking care of visitor assets historic with the Wairau Renwick office. But at other times Matt can also be deployed to various parts of the world to assist fire authorities battling bushfires as a crew leader and operational firefighter. Matt has had multiple deployments over the years to countries such as Australia, USA and Canada. His background in DOC work and time served as a deputy principal rural fire officer, volunteer firefighter and fire depot manager in the North Island have given him a set of specialist skills used in these deployments. On February 14 Matt flew to Tasmania, along with a number of New Zealand personnel to assist with the firefighting efforts across the state. Tasmania has experienced a two year drought which has led to a huge number of bushfires. “It was a specialist role and I was honoured to go,” he says. Originally Matt had turned down

the request due to Marlborough’s high fire risk but a second request to Principal Rural Fire Officer Richard McNamara held some urgency. “It was a big ask for Richard to agree as the danger was high here,” he says. Upon arriving in Tasmania Matt and the firefighters were briefed on the dangers of the area, including Tiger snakes which were particularly aggressive at that time of year. The area where Matt and his crews worked was remote, therefore they were helicoptered in every day. This posed a potential danger to the firefighters he says. “The terrain was steep with thick vegetation and there were no tracks or roads, so if the weather closed in and prevented helicopters getting to us, we wouldn’t be able to get out. So it was my job to make sure we were well prepared and everyone was safe and accounted for.” The crews were not only battling the fires but also the terrain. “The topography of Tasmania is very similar to the South Island’s West Coast, so if you can imagine there was stuff burning one and a

half metres underground. “It was a huge job getting in to dig out hot spots to wet them down,” he says. During the first seven day shift, Matt’s crews managed to establish a complete containment of one fire. The team flew to Hobart for some well deserved rest. They then returned for their final seven day shift to contain a second fire. “One of the most incredible things was when we came across archeological sites with aboriginal cave paintings that were around 40,000 years old. “We were told by the locals that it was quite likely that no white man had set foot there, so that was quite special.” While the work was physically demanding it was also rewarding, he says. “Kiwis have a great reputation anywhere they go firefighting. People love our work ethic, we just get in and get on with the job. They really appreciate us and it makes you feel proud to be a Kiwi,” he says. Since returning home Matt has

reflected on how lucky Marlborough is to have its Incident Management Team in place. “Yeah there are the guys on the front line working hard and battling the fires but there’s also a lot of people in the background that are

just as deserving of recognition. “Management are up at all hours of the night putting plans together and I take my hat off to those who do it. “We really are lucky to have these fire crews and management teams here in Marlborough,” he says.

Winter Warmth 2016 Woodburner checks necessary for safety Story and photo by Celeste Alexander While the cold winter weather has yet to arrive, it’s more important than ever to have your woodburners checked or repaired as soon as possible, says Peter Cairns, owner of Heating Marlborough. He says whether you have a new or old woodburner, unless it’s been maintained or checked recently it could pose a fire hazard. “Our families to be safe is what we all want so don’t risk it by not having your chimney cleaned or woodburner checked. “A lot of older woodburners need to be checked more often as they were installed by older standards, and newer woodburners also need maintenance to ensure they perform as efficiently as possible,” he says.

Heating Marlborough has been busy leading up to winter with ‘lots’ of permits at Council for new woodburner installations, and customers purchasing replacement parts for their existing woodburners. Asked what was the most popular type of woodburner to date, Peter says it’s models with radiant tops and wetbacks. “After the earthquakes here and in Christchurch people started recognising the benefits of these models. If the power went out they would still have good heating, hot water and a place to cook,” he says. “I hear a lot of people saying they are saving money on power as it’s the most efficient way to heat a home.” When purchasing a new woodburner it pays to have it installed by a ‘certified installer’, Peter adds.

“Firstly, a quality installation is important to your woodburner’s performance and safety. “Then there’s the warranty. Manufacturers recommend that a certified installer is used otherwise the warranty may be void, so it’s good to be aware of this,” he says. A few extra tips: • Woodburners should have the flue, door seals, ropes and baffles checked. • Only seasoned wood should be burned. • Don’t burn coal in a woodburner or you will damage it. • Install a safety fire guard around the fire to prevent children from being burned. Green wood can hold up to its own weight in moisture and sap and it takes time to get rid of this. Softwoods will season quite quickly, in about six to 12 months, but it can take 18months to two years for hardwoods such as manuka to dry to an acceptable level. • Split larger logs so that the largest surface area of the internal wood is exposed to the air. • Stack the wood loosely, on bearers, with the ends facing a prevailing wind. • Cover with a plastic sheet on a light frame to create a warm house effect, with sides open to the breeze so it can flow freely through the stack. • Do not use until it is fully seasoned. • Do not stack rotten wood, it has very little useful heat in it. • Leave the bark on split wood, it helps to provide natural protection from rain.

Try these tips • Knock two pieces of ‘seemingly’ dry wood together. If it ‘rings’ rather than ‘thuds’ it is likely to be dry. • Look for radial splits at the end of a piece of wood. These are a sure way to indentify dry wood. • Place a piece of timber on a good fire base. If three sides are burning within 15 minutes, the fuel can be considered to be dry.

Winter Warmth 2016 Close out the cold Double glazing is a way of creating an insulating layer - either normal air or special heavy gases - between two panes of glass. It lets in as much sunlight as singleglazed windows, but is better at holding in heat. Double glazing is standard in most new houses but it’s also worth installing in existing homes if you’re doing substantial repairs or replacing the windows. If you need to prioritise, install double glazing to the main heated areas of the house as well as to large windows. Benefits of double glazing Halve the heat loss through windows. Significantly improve the thermal comfort of your home. Reduce external noise. Reduce or remove condensation build up in cold weather. Speak to your friendly local glass specialist about double glazing for your home or business, and find out how it will benefit you and your family.

Double glazing the windows and doors of your home, you will be creating a healthy, warm environment. Get ahead of winter and speak to your local glass specialist.

Pump up heat Autumn is here and in the short space of two months, winter will be too. The day time temperatures might be warm for now, cold nights and chilly days will be here before you know it, and that means turning on your heat pump. By taking the time to have your heat pump repair and maintenance done now, you can save yourself the hassle and trouble of a malfunctioning heat pump when the cold weather arrives. In addition, by transitioning your heat pump to autumn and winter weather, you will be able to rest assured knowing that the system will be in proper working order when the time comes to use it most. Other benefits include: Healthier indoor air, cleaner indoor air, lower utility costs, system is less likely to break down and it extends the systems lifespan. Speak to your local heat pump specialist and be prepared for winter.

Keeping safe and warm with LPG As the temperatures drop you are probably starting to think about ways to stay warm over winter. With the long weekend coming up now is a good time to check your gas heaters to make sure you can stay safe as well as warm. Here’s 10 things to consider. Before using your gas heater • LPG catches fire very easily and may explode if the tank or cylinder gets punctured so store it carefully and check it before using it. • Check the bottles and rubber parts for cracking and check for leaks – either apply soapy water to the connections, turn the cylinder on and look for bubbles or sniffing the cylinder for a smell of rotting vegetables. Get professional help if you suspect a leak. • You cannot store more than a total of 100 kilograms of LPG unless you have special permission. Using your heater • Ventilate the room - breathing LPG can make you very sick and LPG heaters can

make a lot of condensation. • Stand away from the flame when operating the controls. • Keep your heater at least a metre away from anything that may catch fire. • If your heater is in a high traffic area or you have young children install a safety guard. • Don’t use patio heaters and barbecues

You wouldn’t drink dirty water... Why breathe dirty air? Cleanaire Heat reCovery ventilators Continuously:

Here’s how a genuine* Cleanaire Heat Recovery Ventilator works

1. Reduce humidity and remove condensation 2. Exhaust stale humid polluted air 3. Replace stale air with fresh dry warm outdoor air 4. Transfer heat (ie. from lounge log fire) around the home. 5. Saves up to 8 times more energy than it costs to run. 6. Reduce greenhouse gas *WARNING - don’t be fooled by imitations! A genuine Heat Recovery Ventilator must have three components; emissions by recycling energy. 1. A supply fan 2. An exhaust fan 3. An energy exchanger. Otherwise it’s not a Heat Recovery Ventilator!

By Dr Andrew Morgan, Wairau Hospital clinical head of emergency It’s in everyone’s interest that Wairau Hospital’s Emergency Department is treated as a place where people with serious needs can quickly receive medical help. Employers and managers have a role to play in keeping the ED free for emergencies, and I’d like to challenge you to do just that. When your staff member needs attention for non-emergency health reasons please don’t treat ED as the default option. There are several options for professional health advice in Marlborough: Healthline (0800 611 116), pharmacies, GP or practice nurses and the urgent after hours GP clinic. A person with non-emergency needs, such as the flu, an insect bite, aching shoulders or sprains and strains, who presents at the ED may be referred to see their GP. If they are seen, they will have to wait until others with more urgent needs are looked after. I’m talking about people with

life-threatening conditions such as chest pain, breathing difficulties, symptoms of a stroke or trauma from an accident. A lot of people assume they won’t be able to get a same-day GP appointment and think ED is the alternative. It’s not. A lot of practices save appointments for acute cases each day, and it’s always recommended to talk with a practice nurse on the phone for advice. If a patient has non-emergency needs they will be better off in the long run if they see their GP or practice nurse. Their medical notes will be up to date and a connection may be drawn between the reason for this visit and other aspects of the patient’s health. Emergency Department doctors don’t have the patient’s notes before them. We treat the patient’s immediate needs and send them on their way. We all want the ED to offer the best care when you and your staff need us most. Thank you for your support.

Stock up medicine cabinet A well-stocked medicine cabinet will help you care for yourself and your family. The Marlborough Primary Health Organisation asked the Scott Street Health lead nurse Alison Bond for some tips. First things first - clean out your cabinet. Check the packaging on medication to make sure it’s in date. Throw out anything past the use-by date or any medicines that are damaged. The following medicines and items are useful to have in your family cabinet: • Painkillers: Most people have paracetamol (or Pamol for little ones) and ibuprofen. What’s the difference? Paracetamol relieves pain (muscular, back, head and period pain) and reduces fever but has no antiinflammatory activity. It’s less irritating to the stomach than ibuprofen and has a long safety record. Ibuprofen relieves pain and inflammation. Can be used for rheumatic and muscular pain, headaches, backache, and period pain as well as cold and ‘flu-like’ symptoms. Always read the label and be sure to follow the instructions • Rehydration mixtures for diarrhoea or vomiting • A thermometer (preferably digital ear thermometer) to check for fever • Antihistamine medicine, if you are buying for an infant ask your pharmacist for advice about which one to buy • Eyedrops that contain an antihistamine and a decongestant can soothe itchy eyes • Antacids to neutralize stomach acidity, which in turn relieves heartburn and reflux • Calamine lotion to soothe itching from rashes and bites • Sunscreen and after-sun lotion • Decongestant drops/vapour rub • Antiseptic cream and wipes • Antifungal cream for athlete’s foot

Buccaline Tablets 7s. Protection from colds for up to 3 months. $11.99 each

• Tweezers, you may also want a magnifying glass • Sticky plasters in a variety of sizes • Adhesive tape and bandages, you may also want butterfly bandages, which pull together the edges of a cut, and help it heal with minimal scarring • Cooling gel packs to help with fever/ bumps/bruises • Teething gel Before you give a child medicine, always check the correct dose for the child’s age, and if the child is old enough to have it. Cuts or grazes are a normal part of growing up. Wounds need to be washed carefully to ensure that all foreign bodies, such as gravel, are removed. Most of the time you can treat wounds at home, but if they need to be closed (with stitches, for example) you’ll need to see a GP or practice nurse. Ring your GP, practice nurse, Healthline or talk to a pharmacist for advice if you’re not sure what to do.

Stadium trucks and flames By Celeste Alexander Saturday night’s speedway action was something a bit different to the ‘norm’ thanks to a visit from six stadium trucks and some fiery flames. Eastern States Speedway president Frank Burns says the crowd enjoyed seeing the trucks getting ‘a bit of air’, and the committee is in talks about another event for next season. “We are already in talks about how we can make it bigger and better. The drivers are happy to come back so we will look at building multi-jumps among other features,” he says. Production driver David Allan also stole the limelight when his 999e car ignited as he crossed the finish line in his final race. David had already managed to win the Production Open Champs and the Martin Motors Production 20 lapper race when a piston blew through the engine block. Oil dripped onto the exhaust

and caught alight. Once the fire was doused David was towed off the track while holding his chequered flag to a cheering crowd. Next on the speedway calendar will be the Jacks Tyres North vs South Super Saloons on April 8 and 9. A friendly rivalry exists between the north and south super saloon drivers, so the top 10 cars from each island will go against one another in the two day racing event at ESS. “The North Island currently holds the trophy, but the South is coming to get it,” Frank says.

Invictus for Blenheim man New Zealand Army Staff Sergeant Nick Marfell from Blenheim will compete in his first Invictus Games in Orlando, Florida, in May. Nick will compete in the shotput, discus, wheelchair basketball, and one minute sprint rowing events. More than 500 competitors from 15 countries will compete in the Invictus Games’ 10 adaptive sports – including archery, road cycling, power lifting, indoor rowing, athletics, swimming, wheelchair tennis, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, and sitting volleyball. Nick lost his hearing whilst on tour in Afghanistan and is now almost completely deaf in his right ear. He also has a severe form of tinnitus (ringing in the ear) due to the sudden loss of hearing.

Cricket season wraps up By Ed Gilhooly Marlborough Cricket held its afternoon grade finals and awards night on Saturday as the cricket season came to an end last weekend. Wairau took out the Senior Grade 50 over trophy with a 3 wicket win over Celtic. For Wairau, Tarin Mason was the star performer with the ball

taking 5 for 36, while Leon MacDonald top scored with an unbeaten 43. Renwick won the 2nd grade final after scoring 215 batting first, thanks to 49 from Andrew Marshall and 42 from Ed Gilhooly. Three wickets apiece from Gilhooly and Max Brydon restricted Celtic to 126 in reply.

In the 3rd grade final, Celtic Green came out on top in their battle with Wairau. The two teams have contested all three 3rd grade finals this season with Wairau the victors in the two previous meetings. This time round, man of the match Jack Holdaway was instrumental in Celtic’s 131 for 5 batting first.

Steady bowling from all the Celtic bowlers ensure that Wairau fell short on 100 for 7 in reply. At the awards presentation following the game Matthew Stretch was named Cricketer of the year, while Ma’ara Ave was the U21 player of the year. Joel Lavender was awarded the Eric Shattock Trophy for Junior player of the year.

Fine weather hampers pigeons By Alister Cooper The Blenheim Racing Pigeon Club held it’s first race of the young bird season on Saturday from Mt Lyford. The 130 birds were liberated in beautiful weather conditions for the 130 km journey home.

With the fine weather fast times were expected but the opposite happened and the arrival times were quite slow suggesting that the birds encountered adverse weather somewhere along the route. Nonetheless Two Fishers Loft had a very good win and their winning bird recorded

54 km/hr, second position to Donald Morrison on 52.4 km/hr, third to Rob Nearo with 51.8 followed very closely by Neil Nearo on 51.7 km/hr, Shirley Morrison recorded 49.6 km/hr, Alister Cooper on 49.3 km/hr and Chris Bensely with 35.4 km/hr.

Up until now it had been occupied by Barnados. “The timing couldn’t have been better really with Barnados shifting out and the block of land where we are situated now being sold,” officer manager Helen Nicholson says. “Noel has been busy renovating and decorating in time for our move over Easter weekend, so when we reopen on March 29 subject to resource consent, it will be in our new building. “Noel and all the staff are excited about the move and look forward to seeing our new and existing clients there.” The building will still have parking available and easy access for elderly with a ramp. “The real benefit will be the location as it’s closer to
