Skaters on a roll

Story and photo by Cathie Bell Even a torrential downpour during a meeting at the skatepark doesn’t dampen the enthusiasm of a group of young men who are forming a trust to run the skate park as a family-friendly venue. Their plans for the $60,000 upgrade of Blenheim’s skate park are almost finished and changes will be made soon, they say. Skaters backing park upgrade Continued from page 1 The Blenheim skatepark was given $60,000 by the Marlborough District Council in last year’s annual plan to upgrade the facilities. As part of that, a new bowl will be installed and other changes made to some of the ramps and edging for skaters to change what’s available. New seating will go in to make it more comfortable for parents and caregivers watching their children skate or scooter at the park. Spokesman Jason Scammell says a trust is being formed to help fundraise for upgrades at the park in future. He says he and his colleagues Kerry Males, Aaron Barrett, Chris Watson, and Matt O’Donnell were really happy with the support they were getting from council and others.

Terry Sloan, chairman of the council’s assets and services committee, says he was happy to support the group that was getting in behind the work at the skatepark. “It’s just a fantastic effort.” The group is taking the right steps in forming a trust, and are getting plenty of support, he says. But they are backing up the funding from council with hard work, donating their own time and labour to get the park upgrade, Terry says. They will be working to put the new bowl in, he says. “When you have this input, it shows what can be achieved. “They’re not just asking for a handout, but working to provide a facility for all to use.” Jason says the group wants to maximise what they can get from the

council funding, and are keen to see the skatepark recognised as an asset for Blenheim. It was a good place for kids and

their parents to come to play too, he says. People should see the upgrade work start soon, he says.

TWICE WEEKLY

Japan exchange a highlight for students By Cathie Bell Four college students off to Japan in July are in the finishing stages of organising a Quiz night and Auction, to help raise the $9000 they need to cover the cost of the trip. Sarah Maclean, Molly Leitch, and Rachael Beach from Marlborough Girls’ College and Gemma O’Rourke from Queen Charlotte College have been chosen by the Marlborough District Council to be part of the annual sister city exchange. They will be accompanied by Shalom Del’Monte-Aberhart, a teacher from MGC. The girls say they are ‘very excited’ to have been chosen and will travel to Japan in July to spend a week each in Tendo and Otari, Blenheim’s

Japanese sister cities. They will attend school and be home hosted, experiencing first hand what life in Japan is all about. They will get a chance to do a little bit of site seeing as well when they visit Tokyo and Hiroshima. They will be accompanied by Shalom Del’MonteAberhart, a teacher from Marlborough Girls’ College. Sarah says, “I’m really looking forward to experiencing the everyday school life of a teenager in Japan”. Both she and Gemma say they are ‘a little nervous’ about the language barrier and ‘hope that we can understand what they say’. The girls have been amazed and humbled by the generosity of the Marlborough businesses.

College students, from left, Rachael Beach, Gemma O’Rourke, Sarah Maclean, and Molly Leitch are off to Japan.

“We have some awesome items up for auction, all of which have been donated by local businesses - we can’t

thank them enough!” The fundraiser is being held this Friday May 20, at the Marlborough Girls’ College

Hall at 7pm. Tickets are $100 for a table to seat up to eight people, and can be booked by calling 5775515 or 578 8005.

Schools donate funds to RSA memorial wall Story and photos by Cathie Bell The Marlborough Returned Services Association’s new memorial wall project has been boosted this week with two schools donating money. The RSA is to build a memorial wall on the footpath island outside the Clubs of Marlborough building in Alfred Street to provide an access-friendly site for people to remember those from Marlborough who have died in wars from the Boer War to the Vietnam War. The project came about after people found it hard to climb the steps to look at the roll of honour in the Memorial Clock Tower in Seymour Square. Marlborough RSA president John Forrest and project director Christine Bamber went to Rapaura School’s assembly on Friday to talk to the pupils about the memorial wall project. Late last year, the students had a food stall at their school gala and sold freeze-dried hangi packs to raise money for the RSA. They raised $800, which John says is ‘amazing’. He told the pupils the association was ‘stunned’ by the amount of the donation. “And since then, we have been trying to think of a lasting manner in which we could give the school their money back. “At the April monthly MRSA Executive meeting it was decided to seek approval from the school and the children to place this money towards the memorial wall in remembrance of the

men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice from the Rapaura area and school.” The students were enthusiastic, and John says the money will go to engraving the 12 Rapaura names from the roll of honour onto the wall. On Monday, Bohally Intermediate presented Marlborough RSA vice-president Ross Cook and Christine with $520 to go towards the memorial wall. It was raised from a mufti day, organised by the school’s Room 3 and its representatives, Zena Harding, Rylee Hall, and Blake Houkamo-Sollett. Zena says the students have studied war service as part of their class work, and the fundraising has been done in honour of the brave men and women who ‘fought to keep our country free’. Principal Shane Campbell says the donation was studentled, and ‘came from the heart’. Ross says the younger generation amaze him with how much they knew and the interest they have. The schools will be presented with certificates formally recognising their donations when the wall is built. There are 646 names on the Marlborough roll of honour, John says. The memorial wall project is also a chance to correct any errors in the roll as engraved on the clock tower memorial, he says. To complete the project, $25,000 has to be raised by sponsorship. Each name will cost about $40 to engrave.

Story and photo by Cathie Bell Marlborough Zonta has donated $1000 to help Girl Guides travel to Wellington later this year. Guide leader Rose Shallcrass says about 45 Brownies, Guides, and Rangers from Blenheim and Picton will be visiting Wellington in October. The group is raising money for the trip now, and is arranging accommodation with fellow guides in Wellington. “It will be a new experience for some of them, some haven’t travelled.” It will give them a chance to mix with fellow guides in Wellington, and to also

see some of the sights such as Te Papa and the Cable Car, she says. Zonta president Clare Pinder says the group was donating the funds to ensure the girls were able to go on the trip, lowering the cost barrier. As a professional women’s group, Zonta worked locally, nationally, and internationally to support women and provide leadership. Zonta member Bridget Orman says Zonta looks to help women achieve more. “The synergy between Zonta and the Girl Guides is quite strong.”

MARLBOROUGH STADIUM TRUST

Builders’ judges pass comment on houses Story and photo by Cathie Bell Marlborough houses are up with trends around the country, judges in one of the categories in the Registered Master Builders’ house of the year competition say. Graham Anderson and Allan Austen are judging the $500,000-$650,000 build category in the competition and have been travelling around the country. They assessed two houses in Marlborough on Sunday, after working in Nelson and before moving on to Wellington. Graham says it is pretty common now to see butler’s pantries in houses, either for food preparation or a bigger pantry space. There are also a lot of large glass doors opening onto al fresco areas, he says – ‘a lot more of those’. “When those doors are opened right up, there’s no interruption between the room inside and outside.” It’s also common to have a roof or awning over the outside area. Most areas are quite similar, Graham says, with no real differences in houses in different parts of the country. However, it’s clear houses are customised and becoming designed more uniquely for people’s different needs, he says, even

when they are built by group home building companies. “We are seeing a lot of individual design.” The quality of houses is high this year, Graham says. Two-thirds of the marks are for the quality of workmanship in the house, and the rest is about design and style. “It’s a competition about excellence, and we’re looking at excellence.” A house achieving a bronze award has got 75 per cent of marks and is 50 per cent above the industry standard, he says. A silver award is 80 per cent of marks, and gold 90 per cent or above – ‘that’s difficult to achieve’. Nationally, more than 330 homes will be assessed as part of the competition, before regional event winners are announced in July and August. The team of industry experts are tasked with finding the best builds in the country, ranging from new homes and show homes to renovations and builder’s own homes. Registered Master Builders Association Chief Executive David Kelly says the number of top-quality entries each year reflects the high standards maintained by its Master Builders.

Piano teacher Kimberly Jones (centre) with her younger sisters Charlotte (6) and Sophie (9).

Piano teacher to shine on stage Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Music has played a big part in Kimberly Jones’s life so it is no surprise to see that it has become her passion too. The 20-year-old piano teacher will be the guest artist at this Friday’s Tempo Concert titled ‘Classics Night’ which will be held at the Wesley Centre at 7pm. What’s unique about the concert for Kimberly is that she is a long-time Tempo performer after first joining the Junior Music Circle over 10 years ago. Kimberly began piano lessons with teacher Linda Lloyd at the age of nine years, and now she is in the teacher’s seat providing lessons to around 40 of her own students, including younger sister Sophie. During her time with Tempo she has attended “pretty much most” of the concerts where she says she gained a lot of her stage confidence and skills.

“Tempo has been great for building performance skills. It’s taught me how to be confident in front of an audience, and if I hadn’t had that experience then I think I would be scared of going on stage. “Everyone involved is so supportive and each concert is always full, so it’s a great way for youth to gain their performance skills,” she says. At previous concerts Kimberly has performed in trios but never been asked to star as guest artist, so this Friday is a ‘real privilege’ she says. “I have been looking forward to this for a while now and I’m really excited.” Kimberly will be playing three classic pieces, Nocturne by Chopin, French Cafe by Mike Strickland and an arrangement by the Piano Guys. The Tempo concert begins at 7pm and costs $10 per family or $3 per person.

Salt festival a drawcard in sister city By Cathie Bell Years of visiting Japan as part of the sister city relationship has seen Marlborough District Councillor Graeme Barsanti invited to take part in the Otari Salt festival last month. While the original sister city relationship with Otari and Tendo, Blenheim’s other Japanese sister city, were based on the importance of cherries to both regions, salt is also another common factor. Marlborough has New Zealand’s only commercial saltharvesting company. Graeme joined the Otari mayor and thousands of others on the long walk from the coast along a narrow and at times steep track to the temple where the sea water was looked after. “Years ago, they used to gather salt from the Japan Sea and carry it up the mountain to Otari, where it was used to preserve food.” He also took part in a shogi tournament – a life-size chess game with people as individual pieces. The shogi tournament was part of a cherry blossom festival in Tendo, and Graeme says it was hard for them to find clothing and shoes large enough for him. Luckily, he was provided with a good stool to sit on during the game, which took almost three hours to complete. “My team won.”

Marlborough District Councillor Graeme Barsanti in Otari, one of Blenheim’s Japanese sister-cities.

The game was popular, with grandstands set up for the about 3500 spectators and it was covered by television. “As with everything, they gave Marlborough a special mention… Local television ran pictures from Marlborough and it was great advertising.” Graeme says the sister city relationship with Otari and Tendo is ‘vital’ for young people. The regions recognise Marlborough people and treat them well, he says. “What we’ve got over there has been built up by the council for over 30 years… They appreciate that we are friends and work with them.”

Definitely not, ask yourself why is it banned in the European Union. It is definitely toxic waste!!

I don’t know much about it really.

Yes, it’s a no-brainer.

No just leave it how it is.

My children had the advantage of growing up with fluoridation with nary a filling apiece and I would hope for the same thing for my grandchildren in Blenheim.

Possums, possums Black & Burgundy $159.95

71 Market St BlenheiM

Dear Ed, I couldn’t get to hear NZ First Richard Prosser speak on “Beyond 1080” so your report was welcome. Mr Prosser is quite right. Possums aren’t a pest whether on TB or foliage browsing grounds. Numbers are way down. Look at lack of road kills on Whangamoas to Nelson. Once you would see 20 to 30 dead possums. Now there is one or none. The lack is not because of 1080.

Inviting You to Our Guest Speaker Pete Crean from Nairobi, Kenya Pete was abandoned by his birth parents, and was then adopted into a blended family in Tokoroa, New Zealand. He struggled at school due to dyslexia. Pete and Sharon were married in 1987, and then moved to Sydney in 2002. He and Sharon co-founded Beyond Water, a charity that provides clean drinking water and sanitation facilities across East Africa. After starting Beyond Water in 2007 they have now improved the lives of well over 100,000 people. Pete, Sharon and family are now living and working in Nairobi since moving in 2013.

It is because wildlife populations after liberation take 50 years to reach a peak, then drop back to a low level. Possums and deer are browsers, just like pigeon, kokako and moas were or are. But DOC and TBFree NZ have been dropping 1080 which kills everything living - insects, birds, possums, deer. It might be funny like a Keystone Cop story but it is not. They are wasting valuable public money. Bushman Bill

1080 Gravy train Dear Ed, How gratifying to see NZ First MP Richard Prosser’s doubts about possum as a pest as portrayed by TBFreeNZ and Department of Conservation mouthings. The possum “pest” fable is like “The Emperor’s New Clothes” fairytale. On bovine tuberculosis, last year, 9800 possums autopsied showed none with TB. As a possum hunter some years ago, I found none. A friend who has trapped probably 50,000 possums many in Marlborough, over 30 or 40 years, found just two. That is an infected rate of .004 percent. The World Organization for Animal Heath says 0.2 percent infected herd prevalence, is the yardstick. Anything under that is TB free. Over nine years, NZ’s TB rate is 0.04per cent. So if NZ is TB free, why have we got TBFreeNZ spending millions of farmer and taxpayer money and destroying bird life with 1080? Smells like a gravy train to me. Trapper

TB and Possums Dear Ed, What a refreshing approach by NZ First’s Richard Prosser “Possums not a Pest?” as in your last issue! Instead of the tired old mythical chant from National’s Conservation Minister Maggie Barry and Environment Minister Nick Smith of “biblical proportion” plagues invading the country. The reality is everything is hunky dory until Maggie and Nick drop their beloved 1080 poison over our public lands. 1080 poison is an ecosystem disruptor. It kills rats. But fast breeders like rats surge back from survivors and within 18 months there is three times the original number. It has been scientifically documented (Landcare’s Sweetapple and Nugent and others). As for TB, we have been TB free for ten years. The international standard is 0.2 per cent for herds. NZ is just 0.04 per cent. There is no need for TB FreeNZ. They can pack up and retire, saving big farmer and taxpayer money. Percy Parker

Passionate about food Marlborough nutritionist Emily Hope does not believe in dieting or calorie counting, but instead says people should be focusing on the foods that are naturally nutritious. Emily talks to reporter Celeste Alexander about the hot topic of sugar content, wholesome healthy alternatives and how to read food labels.

Many experts believe it’s the sugar content in our diets that is contributing to obesity and other health issues in adults and children. According to Emily it’s about getting the balance right, with the smallest of changes making big differences to our health. Emily is a New Zealand-registered nutritionist, a career she says was born out of a love for food, nutrition and the power it has to better people’s lives. “The more I learned, the more I loved it. Health wasn’t as cool when I was at school as it is now,” she laughs. Her expertise has been shared with different groups, including schools and parents, as well as through contracts she has picked up working with the likes of the Crusaders Academy. One key message she works to is that if people focus on whole, natural unprocessed foods then they will have a good response to their overall health. “I understand that it can be difficult to buy everything fresh and that not all household budgets can stretch to afford it, but you can be thrifty by following the specials, making food in bulk and freezing it, and making a lot of food from scratch. “Things like homemade muesli for breakfast instead of sugary cereals, eating a fresh orange instead of drinking fruit juice, buying canned fruit in natural juice if you can’t afford it fresh... there are lots of little things you can do. “Read food labels and divide the sugar grams by four, that will convert it into teaspoons to help put it into perspective,” she says. When asked about how people can

decrease the sugar content in their foods, Emily says there are many great ‘alternatives’ available. “Instead of drinking a 600ml bottle of Coke which contains 16 teaspoons of sugar, drink water or plain milk. “If you drink tea or coffee with sugar, try cutting down or taking sugar out completely. For example, if you drink three cups of tea each with one sugar per day, add that over a week and you have consumed 21 teaspoons of sugar, and over a month 84 teaspoons of sugar. “Instead, when making a tea or coffee, put the sugar into a jar. As it fills you will be able to see just how much sugar you have avoided,” she says. Other tips Emily gives are putting a jug of water on the table at dinner time instead of fizzy drinks, making healthy ‘mocktails’ for the kids that are colourful and fun, including your children in with food preparation so they too can learn basic skills of cooking, rather than always reaching for pre-packaged foods. “What they learn to eat now will carry into their adult years. All it takes is just one positive role model in a family to make a huge difference,” she says. Of course there will always be times when healthy eating habits ‘slip’, Emily says. “You don’t have to be perfect all of the time, there will be times when you go to a birthday party and eat a piece of cake. It’s not a big deal, it happens. “The main thing is that you move away from the unhealthy and start making positive changes.”

Mike Pero realtor Debbie Webster with Marlborough Maori wardens from left: Gemma Kinney, Erana Maxwell, Farishta Peterson-Ihaka, Molly Barclay, and John Ihaka.

Maori Wardens partner with agent Story and photo by Cathie Bell The work done by Maori wardens in Marlborough has been recognised by a local businesswoman. Mike Pero real estate agent Debbie Webster has sponsored the Maori wardens’ polo shirts, caps, and wet weather gear. Debbie says there was ‘so much doom and gloom and negativity’ around that she wanted to do something positive. “No-one recognises those that do good in the community. “Through one of the members with whom I have got to know, I have learnt of the tireless hours, all voluntary, the wardens do, no matter the weather. They’re passionate, they care for our people and are there to make our community feel safe.” Wardens spokeswoman Farishta Petersen-

Ihaka says Debbie’s donation was ‘absolutely invaluable’. It enabled the group to get uniforms, ensuring they were recognisable as a group, and as the Maori wardens often help out at marae ceremonies at 4am, the wet weather gear is ‘very handy’ to ensure they stayed warm and dry, she says. “The donation is absolutely invaluable. But also, it is so nice to develop a relationship with Debbie as well. She is a nice lady.” Maori wardens are a community support group, Farishta says. “We’re out there, visable, and available to the community as a whole.” She describes the group’s role as ‘peacemaking’. They support other community activities in Marlborough, and are policevetted and hold warrants as Maori Wardens.

Film close to the heart This week’s film at the Renwick film festival is close to organiser Paul Davidson’s heart. The film is about his niece and goddaughter Helen and follows her through her marriage, the birth of her first child, and diagnosis of cancer.

Paul says he was given amazing access to Helen, her family, and her care in the hospice. The film is screening in Hospice Awareness Week, which Paul says is coincidental. It screens at 7.30pm tomorrow in the Renwick Anglican Church Hall, tickets are $10.

Fairhall School students can see The Ned from their school, and they plan to use this weekend’s Tramp the Ned event to highlight the diversity of plant and bird life on the mountain. The school is a green-gold Enviroschool, the highest level. Students are actively involved in Sunday’s school fundraiser, including guiding people up the track at 909m and preparing information boards on the flora and fauna found only in the Tempello area, which The Ned is part of. The Tempello bio-diversity project area is the largest and most intact natural area in the Wither Hills Ecological Zone. Farm owners David and Joanna Grigg say they are pleased to be able to share the special area and to give people the chance to have fantastic views over eastern Marlborough. “Walkers will follow a track through the native forest on their way to the summit,” Joanna says. The vegetation is varied with about half of the area being kanuka forest, with small pockets of broadleaved forest, black and red beech and matai forest, and nine threatened plant species. The Ned area has the only population of Rifleman birds in the Wither Hills Ecological Zone. It also has South island robin, tomtit, brown creeper, fantail, grey warbler, waxeye, bellbird, kingfisher, long tailed cuckoo, black shag, kahu and eastern falcon.

Opawa Bridge Replacement Building a new bridge for SH1 over the Opawa River

Until Thursday 9 June, the NZ Transport Agency is seeking your views on the preferred proposal to replace the Opawa Bridge on State Highway 1 with a new two-lane bridge on the western side of the existing bridge. The existing bridge will be kept for pedestrians and cyclists. Last year the NZ Transport Agency launched an investigation of the Wairau and Opawa Bridges to improve travel on State Highway 1 north of Blenheim. It was identified as part of the Government’s Accelerated Regional Roading Package (ARRP), which provided funding to progress a selection of regionally important state highway projects in order to address economic efficiency, safety, and resilience issues on our regional transport networks. Following the investigation, the Wairau Bridge was found to be in serviceable condition. The Opawa Bridge, however, was identified for replacement and we know upgrading it is a high priority for Marlborough District Council and residents.

School enviroschool coordinator Romsey de Beer says the children have been working to promote the biodiversity in the area that exists nowhere else. “It’s not as widely recognised as it should be. “It’s cool that our kids are able to have it in their backyard and know about it.” This year is the fifth Tramp the Ned fundraising walk being held for the school on Tempello and organisers are offering more tramping options this year. As well as the Waterforce Tramp the Ned ultimate tramp to the 909m high summit, walkers who prefer the flat or have young children can stroll through forest and farmland to the base of The Ned, and return within an hour. Those wanting the amazing views of the Wairau, Awatere, Cook Strait and inland mountains can climb to the saddle or summit, a three to five hour return trip. Fern the Falcon, from the Marlborough Falcon Trust will be there between noon and 2pm. • Participants must register between 8.30am and 9.45am on Sunday. Cash payment only and prices are $15 Adult, $10 child, $30 Family. Park at the Taylor Pass entrance to Tempello Farm (15km up Taylor Pass Rd) or park in the paddock 2km before Base Camp and take the courtesy van. The Ned Café will be selling hot and cold food and drinks so bring cash. WaterForce has water refills at the saddle.

In January 2016 the Government announced a preferred option to build this new bridge at an estimated cost between $14 and $17.5 million. Mark Stevenson

Education Life without a car Are you facing life without a car? A free course is being offered to people facing or thinking about how they will cope when they are no longer driving. This two hour course is being presented by Sue Tilby of Age Concern Nelson who has previously run similar successful events, and is in conjunction with the Marlborough Violence Intervention Programme and Age Concern Marlborough. It’s aimed at increasing awareness of the affects of ageing on people’s ability and confidence on the road. It also looks at alternatives to driving for those who have already given up driving, and encourages them to overcome barriers and remain active in the community. Cather ine Donnelly of Age Concer n Marlborough says a number of important topics will be discussed, such as keeping independent,

road rules knowledge and giving up driving successfully. “It’s important for the elderly to know when and how to give up driving before they are forced to. Planning is crucial as we want people to be left feeling positive about this change in their lives, and have the confidence to still get out and about. “Life without a car can be daunting for some but with careful planning and the knowledge of what services are available can make all the difference,” she says. The ‘Life Without A Car’ course is being run on Thursday, May 26 at St Andrews Church from 11.30am - 12:30pm. It costs nothing but a smile to attend, and a light finger food lunch will follow. Please register with Age Concern by Wednesday, May 25 if you would like to attend.

Giving up driving can be a hard decision, but learning what services are available can help keep you mobile within the community.

Reading tips As parents you are your child’s most influential teacher with an important part to play in helping your child to learn to read. Here are some suggestions on how you can help to make this a positive experience.

Choose a quiet time Set aside a quiet time with no distractions. Ten to fifteen minutes is usually long enough.

Maintain the flow If your child mispronounces a word do not interrupt immediately. Instead allow opportunity for self-correction.

Be positive If your child says something nearly right to start with that is fine. Don’t say ‘No. That’s wrong,’ but ‘Let’s read it together’ and point to the words as you say them.

Regular practice Try to read with your child on most school days. ‘Little and often’ is best.

Office internships offered by NMIT Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) is offering a scholarship for student fees and a chance to learn on the job for several lucky people wanting a career in business or office administration. Business Administration programme co-ordinator Pauline Carson says it’s a great opportunity for students to receive practical on-thejob mentoring while studying for their qualifications. She says it’s forecast that more than 27,000 more business administration managers will be needed over the next 10 years and NMIT’s internship plan will help to educate and train job-ready students who can meet the needs of employers. NMIT is calling for intern applications which close on June 20 with interviews for short-listed candidates soon after. Internships begin on July 18. Over the 18-week course, students

will have two days in class and three days each week at their work internship. Interns will receive a scholarship, heavily discounting programme fees. Pauline says initially the job training will all be at the NMIT Nelson offices but she says that will expand to other employers. “We’ve had interest from some companies already and expect to

have several on board in time for next year. “It costs employers nothing and they benefit from having extra hands three days a week for six months. For the interns, it’s a fantastic way to learn through one on one mentoring in a workplace”. Contact Pauline at pauline.carson@ nmit.ac.nz or 546 9175 ext. 868.

Pregnancy to Preschool Settling into childcare Many parents experience the leg clinging, heart-wrenching sobbing, and tantrums when dropping off their children to childcare. It can be upsetting for both the child and parents but there are a number of strategies you can use to settle your child into care successfully. Whether it’s kindergarten, home-based childcare, a nanny or even a family member caring for your child, these are all great tips to keep in mind. • Try not to show any negative emotion when leaving your child in childcare. Children can pick up on your anxiety and in turn become apprehensive themselves. • Becoming familiar and comfortable within the childcare environment, prior to starting, is a great for all involved. Positive thinking

Fun ways to integrate the left and right brain hemispheres in toddlers Activities such as finger painting are great tools for caregivers and parents to use in their toddler’s playtime. Encourage the toddler to use both hands by dipping them in the paint and

moving their fingers about the paper. This exercise involves the brain telling the fingers to move the paint about in patterns and allows the child to explore different sensations.

Cuddles as a baby, spending time playing and answering their questions as they grow and providing a happy, positive environment are all literally ‘brain food’ for impressionable young minds. The time children spend with their parents is said to be the most important, according to experts. Enjoyment and success in the task whatever it is, will foster a positive attitude, and praise for a job well done will boost a child’s confidence. • Encourage your child to listen to what people are saying and ask questions if they don’t understand. • Work with your child to overcome problems and difficulties. Show them they don’t have to struggle on their own. • Praise the things they do well. Don’t tell them they are doing something ‘badly’, but instead suggest “you were almost right, shall we try again this way?”

We encouragePrivate children to participate in a range of fun learning activities;

GIESEN SPORTS AND EVENTS CENTRE OPEN DAY Run by Marlborough Weddings & Events Sunday 22nd May 2016, 10am to 1pm

Wedding planning? Come along to the Giesen Events Centre Open Day this Sunday You have received a beautiful engagement ring and your friends and family are all asking for a wedding date, so what should you do? Attend the Marlborough Weddings and Giesen Events Centre Annual Open Day this Sunday. Organised by Alysha Hutchison, owner of Marlborough Weddings and events man-

ager for the Giesen Events Centre, this has been a popular event for the past two years. “This event appeals to those who are getting serious about their wedding planning and want to know what’s available. “It’s an opportunity for them to see the venue set up in wedding theme and hopefully provide some ideas for couples gearing up to walk down the aisle,” she says.

The Giesen Events Centre in Renwick.

Giesen Centre a great venue An example of how the venue could look.

Wedding ideas that inspire The Open Day will see the Giesen Events Centre decorated in a number of wedding themes for couples to gain ideas for their own special day, as well as having a number of professionals attending on the day. Alysha will be on hand with a number of wedding decoration displays and information on her services as a wedding co-ordinator. There will be everything from caterers and marriage celebrants, through to makeup, gift baskets and a marquee set up outside. Renwick based bridal designer Bernadette Thomas will also be there showcasing some

of her gowns as well as being available to talk with future brides. If you are looking for something unique for your wedding, New Zealand Fireworks will have a table as well as Magic Moments Photo Booth. “There will be plenty for people to see. By having these wedding professionals all under one roof, it’s a great opportunity for people to find out what’s available,” Alysha says. Many of the exhibitors will have a competition or special offer on the day, so make sure you don’t miss out on this fantastic event.

The Giesen Events Centre, located in Renwick is a fantastic venue available for wedding hire. What makes this venue unique is its facilities, size and out-of-the-way handy location. Outside there is a large carparking area for guests, close to accommodation. Walk upstairs and into the heart of the centre, there is a large commercial kitchen set up with everything your caterer will need. Off the kitchen is a fully equipped bar facility that opens out to the seating area. Up to 150 people can be comfortably seated and with outside views of the surrounding hills, it’s sure to impress your guests. A large dance floor with its own sound system wired in provides the perfect stage for a live band, DJ or Juke Box and extra

space to dance the night away. The venue can be decorated anyway the couple wishes and to make things easier, events manager Alysha Hutchison also has a huge number of wedding decorations and linen available for hire. “Plus if the weather fails you on your wedding day, this venue is able to be used for the ceremony as well as the reception,” she says. There are packages available which include the venue hire and Alysha’s services as a wedding co-ordinator as well as many other details. The Giesen Events Centre will be running a competition this Sunday during the Open Day, with the prize being $500 off a wedding package. “Come along, talk to me and together we can create the perfect wedding package for you,” she says.

When there’s a fence that needs building the man for the job is Graeme Coleman. Graeme has been operating his fencing contracting business for over 35 years, building a variety of fences all over Marlborough. While a large portion of his work is carried out for farm owners, Graeme and his team of four fencing specialists are able and willing to do any job, large or small. This includes security fencing for private and commercial properties, he says. “For health and safety reasons we have been doing a lot of security fencing. There is an ever increasing need and one that we are happy to cater for.” It’s not only fencing that Graeme and his team can do. They also offer their services to the viticulture industry for new developments, post replacement, wire work plus much more. For any fencing job, Graeme Coleman Contracting Ltd can take care of it all. Simply contact Graeme to find out more.

European vehicle specialist Wayne Hutchison recently moved to Marlborough and with him has brought his long established business Altech Car Clinic. Altech Car Clinic has been operating for 18 years in Auckland and now is based from Wayne’s home on Onamalutu Road. Wayne’s background includes training with Mercedes and BMW in Germany and he has extensive experience working with all European and standard vehicles. He is in the process of building a large workshop but also has a fully equipped mobile vehicle capable of going anywhere, anytime to service, repair and diagnose all of your vehicle’s issues. “We are renowned for our ability to diagnose problems others can’t find and have complete dedication to achieving the best possible result for all our customers,” he says. Altech Car Clinic is also an authorised repairer for Gentle Giant Wheelchair Hoists, disability vehicle servicing and repair as well as re-manufacture and repairs to all wheelchair lifts, steps and more. Wayne’s up-front, honest approach means you can be sure you know what’s happening every step of the way.

Earlier this year local man Doug Powell established his new business ‘Marlborough Fire Installations’. The experience he gained over the years from chimney cleaning and woodburner repairs means he has a thorough knowledge of the work. “It’s been good since the business was established. The message I want to get out there is that while I am new to installing, I have extensive knowledge in this area and I can do everything except supply the fire,” he says. Marlborough Fire Installations is completely independent of fire manufacturers, meaning he is not biased and will work with all makes and models. Another noted attribute is Doug’s background as a qualified builder. “My building knowledge is a great asset to the business. My customers can be assured that their fires are in good hands,” he says. Doug is willing to travel anywhere in Marlborough and he says he is happy to provide quotes and can even take care of the Council permit where needed. “Simply call me and I will do my best to find a solution to suit your needs,” he says.

Emotional things can be hard to talk about Story and photo by Cathie Bell Research saying young people would like to be more open with their feelings and emotions with their parents has been backed by a Blenheim family. Blenheim mum Sharon Hansen, and her son Thom Hall, who is 12, say the research isn’t far off. Sharon says Thom is good at saying he loves her, but she agrees that boys in general are less adept at doing that. “I think it gets worse as they get older.” Sharon says Thom sometimes gives her a kiss or says he loves her on the way to school, and some of his friends seem shocked by that. “I’m thinking long may it last.” Thom says most of the time he doesn’t mind being open about his emotions in front of people, ‘showing my mother that I love her, in front of friends and stuff’. “My friends are different, they’re quite shy and stuff…But I’m like, I only have one mother, so might as well make the most of her.” PaperPlus published a survey on teenage behaviour, it reveals more than half of New Zealand teenagers (58 per cent) would like to be more open with their feelings and emotions towards their mum, and 39 per cent of teenagers only sometimes or rarely tell their mum they love them face-to-face. Concerns about peer reaction also impacts Kiwi teens when expressing their feelings in public with one in three teens stating they would feel awkward or uncomfortable if their friends overheard them telling their mum they loved them. This proves to be more of an issue for teenage boys (44 per cent) than girls (23 per cent).

Blenheim mum Sharon Hansen and son Thom Hall say a PaperPlus survey about young people being shy about showing their emotions rings true.

Clinical psychologist and adolescent specialist Rebecca Daly-Peoples says, “A lot of teens don’t necessarily express love to their parents in an overt way. This can be largely due to the changes and development a teenager goes through during adolescence. “Often there can be a disconnect in perceptions between a parent and their teenager. “It’s quite common that a teenager will think they are showing and expressing love towards their parents, but what you’ll usually find is mum isn’t hearing it as much she would like.” Paper Plus CEO Sam Shosanya says the chain conducted the survey ahead of Mother’s Day to gain insights into how New Zealand teenagers express their feelings.

Motocross event ‘fantastic’ By Cathie Bell The 52nd running of the Peter Brown Memorial motocross was a fantastic event, organisers say. The event, sponsored by the Marlborough Motorcycle centre, was held in Linkwater, spokesman Bjorn Cowdrey says. The Peter Brown memorial is an open competition to motocross riders from around the country. Bjorn says entrants are mainly local riders with about a third of riders travelling from Nelson and Christchurch to compete. The weekend of the event was fantastic, with fog holding up racing on the Sunday morning for a short time, he says. “The track was excellent, with layout thanks to organiser and club president Mike Holland. “The dirt was in prime condition with good track moisture maintained all weekend without any mud or dust. “The track was a fast, wide natural terrain motocross track with plenty of passing opportunities to keep riders and spectators

excited.” Bjorn says another positive outcome for the weekend was no major injuries requiring ambulance or helicopter intervention. “All riders reported having a great time at a fantastically organised event.” Bjorn says there was a lower number of entrants this year with only 65 entries. Usually, there are around 100 entries for this event in the past few years, he says. “ Motorcycle r a ci ng i n Marlborough has taken a dive since the economic downturn about 10 years ago. “It is slowly on the climb back up, though still has a long way to go to compared to 10 years ago.” As well as the Peter Brown Memorial feature race, there were 17 other categories. Sport inbrief Saint Clair half

The 10th Saint Clair Vineyard Half Marathon last Saturday was a ‘great’ event, according to participants. Organisers say more than 3500 people entered the annual race through the vines with 80 per cent of entrants from outside Marlborough, and about 75 per cent female. First place for male runners went to Samuel Hansby of Rarangi with a time of 1.20.03, and first place for female runners went to Sarah Gardiner, of Christchurch, with a time of 1.27.33.

Club rallys in support of loved player The Pelorus Netball Club will be holding a quiz fundraising event for ‘well loved’ Pelorus player Rachel Pihema. Rach, as she’s affectionately known in the netball circles is a player, committee member and coach for the club. Recently Rach and her family suffered two terrible losses, that of her beloved mother and Pelorus supporter, Helen, and more recently

her family home sadly burnt to the ground. The club is calling for the community to rally together to help Rach by supporting the quiz fundraiser. It will be held on Friday, May 27 at the Giesen Sports and Events Centre in Renwick from 7pm. The cost is only $10 per head, minimum four to a team.

Quiz master will be Glenn Kirby of Bayleys Marlborough Real Estate. Go along, enjoy a wonderful night out and with heaps of prizes, raffles plus much more there is fun and laughter guaranteed. Organisers encourage people to book early to avoid disappointment. Email teams and contact information to: nadiacrighton@gmail.com.

Football points adding up Blenheim Valley United took the honours for the first round of the Mayfield Motorworld Senior Men’s Division 1 competition. What makes this season exciting is that the points carry over for the second round. United’s 4-1 victory over Woodbourne cemented top spot

with Central going down to Blenheim Valley Masters 3-2, despite a late come back with goals from Greg Hall and Steve McCaa. Blenheim Valley Cobras also have 12 points on the table after a solid 3-2 win over Rangers City. In Division 2 Rangers Masters

are bossing the table after a good 2-1 win over Redwood Masters. Picton No Names handed Clubs of Marlborough a 4-1 win conceding 2 penalties and an own goal, while Redwood Renegade scored freely to also win 4-1 against Picton Crow

Pigeon racing

The racing pigeons from the Blenheim club were released from Ashburton on Saturday, a distance of 320 km, at 8.15 am. The weather was very good in spite of stormy conditions the country had experienced for several days prior and although some strong winds were predicted for later in the day the stage was set for a good race. Nearo lofts in the Awatere Valley recorded the first and second positions in the club with Rob’s bird doing 67.4 km/hr very closely followed by Neil’s entry with 67.3 km/hr. Third place to the Two Fishers loft with 66 km/hr and then Chris Bensley’s pigeon on 65 km/hr. Sindy Kirkwood at Spring Creek next with 62.4 km/hr then Alister Cooper on 62.2 km/hr, more Spring Creek birds then followed with Shirley Morrison 61 km/hr, Carl Kirkwood 60 km/hr and Donald Morrison 45 km/hr.

Tavern. Rangers United picked up a win too beating Trojans 2-1. Finally, don’t miss Ben Sigmund tonight at A and P Park Pavilion. He’s launching his book “Fully Commited” thanks to Marlborough Football.
