Happy days

Story and photo by Cathie Bell It was balloons, cake, singing, and smiles all round as the community gathered to celebrate 40 years of Catholic preschool education in Blenheim. About 200 adults and children gathered on Saturday to wish St Mary’s Preschool a happy 40th birthday. Continued on page 2 Sala Taufa, the youngest pupil at St Mary’s Preschool, and Brendon Toese look at the spectacular cake celebrating the early childhood centre’s 40th birthday.

Preschool celebrates 40 years of learning Continued from page 1 The festivities began on Saturday afternoon in neighbouring St Mary’s Church, with pupils singing three songs and dancing. Former pupils joined in to help out on the actions. Principal Hazel Shapcott says the preschool was started 40 years ago by a group of St Mary’s Church parishioners who wanted to have a Catholic preschool as a link for their children between the church and the school. She thanked those in the audience who had been there in the beginning. One of the things about St Mary’s Preschool which is ‘lovely’, Hazel says, is that it is

family-based. “We feel like family at the preschool. There has always been good support.” Board of governors chairwoman Kate Gaines thanked everyone for joining the celebrations, and she made a presentation to teacher Wendy Donald who has worked at the school for 25 years. “I started when I was ten,” Wendy joked. Once the formalities were over, the children and adults headed to the preschool for birthday cake. There were bouncy castles set up to entertain the children, and a bunch of 40 helium-filled balloons was released to celebrate

the preschool’s birthday. The preschool was started for Catholic children but is open for all to attend, and Hazel says all staff are fully qualified and registered, and it has no fees for children to attend. “It’s part of our belief system, we don’t want money to be a barrier for children to be able to come here,” she says. “One of the students says it’s like a nest amidst the parish and the school, we’re in the middle and for a lot of people, this is where the journey begins. We quite like that idea.” RIGHT: Forty helium-filled balloons were released to celebrate the preschool’s 40th birthday.

Council backs further work on possible hotel By Cathie Bell Marlborough District Councillors have asked staff to do more work on proposals that could see a new hotel built in Blenheim. The Sun reported two weeks ago that the council had ‘more than one’ approach from developers looking at building hotels in central Blenheim. The approaches were considered by councillors in a public-excluded session in last week’s full council meeting. The public were excluded because of potential commercial sensitivity, to allow staff to discuss the approaches in full. Afterwards, Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman confirmed the council has been approached by a developer with a proposal for a new five star hotel within the Blenheim central business district.

Wynen Street carpark is a potential site for a new hotel.

“Councillors have agreed that staff should enter into further discussions with the developer to see how the proposal may be advanced.” There are several potential hotel sites

within the CBD, on public land and in private ownership, he says. Alistair says previous research done for the Council shows that a new hotel would generate immediate returns from

the construction activity as well the longer term gains from bringing new visitors to the region. However, there is much more work to be done before the financial viability of the project is known, he says. Marlborough Chamber of Commerce general manager Steven Gullery says he didn’t know more than he had read in The Sun, but he is pleased the council is to look further at the proposals. “We’ll wait and see what happens.” A new five star hotel would be a big step for Marlborough, he says. “It would be a shot in the arm for the economy.” Marlborough Tour Company owner Chris Godsiff confirmed he has been working with potential developers, but says he can’t say anything further at this stage.

Two councillors confirmed to retire at election By Cathie Bell Two Marlborough District Councillors are to retire at the local government election in October, and three others have yet to make a decision. Councillors Jessica Bagge and Graeme Barsanti confirm they are to retire. Councillors Geoff Evans and Peter Jerram, along with Mayor Alistair Sowman, have yet to decide whether to run again. The other councillors have all confirmed to the Sun that they intend to run again. While she is stepping down from the council table, Jessica plans to run for the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board again. She says her children will leave home next year, and she has promised her husband ‘a gap year’ to spend some time together. “I’m going to miss it, some of the exciting things happening next year, but at the end of it, your family comes first.” Jessica says she and her partner Andy have been juggling family commitments, council, and their business for six years and it wouldn’t be fair to him to carry on doing that. “You can still achieve things from outside the council.” Graeme says he has done 27 years on the council and its predecessor, and he has loved every minute of it. “It will be my 27th year, it’s time someone else picked it up. “At some stage, you have to stop and hand the ropes over to someone else.” He hopes someone else from his area will ‘pick up the ropes and carry on’ representing the outer

Two wine industry representatives have floated the idea of renaming Blenheim “Marlborough City” to build on the reputation the district has internationally. Allan Scott Wines general manager Mitchell Gardiner and Moa Beer’s Josh Scott have proposed the change as part of marketing Marlborough as a destination, arguing that many people don’t know where Blenheim is but they do recognise Marlborough.

Tickets to events at July’s Marlborough Book Festival are selling fast. Organisers say the Witi Ihimaera event at Cloudy Bay Vineyards has sold out, and some others are close. The festival runs from July 29 to 31, and includes Greg McGee, Steve Braunias, Bill Manhire, Kate De Goldi, Rachael King, and locals Pete Anderson and Peter Jerram.

Men’s breakfast The Combined Churches’ Men’s Breakfast team are holding an event for all men and their sons over 10 years of age on Saturday at 8am at the Nativity Church Hall in Blenheim.

Changes are likely around the Marlborough District Council table after local body elections in October.

Sounds communities. He says he started as a Pelorus Sound ward member originally, and it’s important to work hard for all the community groups out in the sounds. “We have kept three representatives for the Sounds ward,

but you’ve got to remember, it’s not just Picton and Queen Charlotte Sound, it’s bigger through Havelock, Canvastown, the Rai Valley and out to D’Urville Island.” Graeme says he’s loved every minute of it. The work was hard at times but

he has worked for the people. “It’s not for me, it’s for the people. “I’ve learnt now it’s time to step aside. I will continue to support the community in whatever way I can.” He was lucky to have been the local traffic cop and then policeman in Havelock, he says. “I was serving the community in that way and then serving them as councillor – it’s something very special.” Councillors Geoff Evans and Peter Jerram, both who are WairauAwatere ward councillors, say they have yet to decide whether to stand again and will make announcements closer to the time. Nominations to stand in the local council elections open on July 15, and close at noon on August 12.

Marlborough Zonta aviation award winner Alice Lammas with two year-old Ruby Lammas.

Winner hooked on flying By Cathie Bell Even the two year-old daughter of Marlborough Zonta’s Amelia Earhart aviation scholarship winner Alice Lammas is hooked on planes. Young Ruby Lammas is obsessed with them, because Granddad has his private pilot’s license and flies over their house in his own plane. Mum Alice is hooked on flying too, and is thrilled to have won the Zonta scholarship which will fund her flying lessons to her first solo flight. Alice says she intends to take it further to get her own private pilot’s license too. “I’ve been into flying from a young age, about Ruby’s age really, and I’ve been hooked ever since. “This wee one’s absolutely obsessed with

planes as well with grandad flying one so hopefully it comes through to the next generation.” She learnt to fly microlights with her father, she says. “He went on to get his PPL and I got married and had a kid. That takes money too.” Flying the ‘taster’ flight as part of the selection process whetted her appetite to get back behind the wheel, Alice says, and she ‘really, really’ wanted to win the scholarship. Marlborough is ‘pretty lucky to have such an awesome aero club right on our back door step’ she says. “The scholarship is just up to my first solo, but I want to collect my PPL and hopefully see some of the awesome sights this country has to offer.” Zonta’s Marlborough president Clare Pinder

says Amelia Earhart was ‘probably Zonta’s most famous member’, and Zonta was the only non-aviation-related organisation the aviator belonged to. Amelia was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932. She disappeared in 1937 while attempting to fly around the world and her plane and body have never been found. The flying scholarship came about because of that connection between Amelia Earhart and Zonta, Clare says. “The fact that we have an outstanding aero club in Marlborough and Marlborough’s association with the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre and aviation history generally makes this scholarship a good fit.” She says Alice is an ideal winner for the award.

Opawa Bridge Replacement Building a new bridge for SH1 over the Opawa River Until Thursday 9 June, the NZ Transport Agency is seeking your views on the preferred proposal to replace the Opawa Bridge on State Highway 1 with a new two-lane bridge on the western side of the existing bridge. The existing bridge will be kept for pedestrians and cyclists. Last year the NZ Transport Agency launched an investigation of the Wairau and Opawa Bridges to improve travel on State Highway 1 north of Blenheim. It was identified as part of the Government’s Accelerated Regional Roading Package (ARRP), which provided funding to progress a selection of regionally important state highway projects in order to address economic efficiency, safety, and resilience issues on our regional transport networks. Following the investigation, the Wairau Bridge was found to be in serviceable condition. The Opawa Bridge, however, was identified for replacement and we know upgrading it is a high priority for Marlborough District Council and residents. In January 2016 the Government announced a preferred option to build this new bridge at an estimated cost between $14 and $17.5 million.

Have your say

Now, is your chance to review the investigation findings and give feedback on the preferred proposal. Read more information on www.nzta.govt.nz/projects/opawa-bridge-replacement and fill out the survey online.

Teen’s win first time award for region Story and photo by Celeste Alexander The St John Youth Cadet programme has just produced another winner for the Marlborough region after local teenager Laurie Duncan was awarded with a top award. Laurie, 16, was named the Nelson Marlborough district Cadet of the Year two weekends ago after competing at Teapot Valley near Nelson. Laurie faced a number of challenges in order to impress the judges, including forming a political party, doing a presentation to leaders and an interview with the area youth manager. There was a fun element to it though she says. “My political party was called the ‘Everyday Super Hero Party’, and I dressed as Super Girl in a cape and dress. I was a lot of fun. “I’m told that my point of difference was including humour in my presentation,” she says. Once the competition was complete a prize giving was held, and that was when Laurie found out she had won. “I was overwhelmed especially as Marlborough has never had this award, so to be the first is a big deal,” she says. Laurie received a trophy, medals and certificate as well as the Aguilette braid which she wears on her St John uniform. Asked why she chose to join St John Youth Cadets, she says her father inspired her. “I started in 2009 as my father was an

Fluoride Dear Ed, My understanding of parenthood is being responsible toward and for the children, especially health wise. Why is it that they expect the public and ratepayers etc to pay for and supply fluoride? Tablets are ok, but the other is poisonous. A book has been published by an Australian specialist entitled ‘Hypocrites’ and deals with many health problems, many pages deal with fluoride including a letter written by the inventor, deeply apologising to the population for producing a poison. Heath systems have more than enough problems with finances, dealing with other issues and fluoride should not be one of them! Parent/Caregivers - be responsible. Marvellous Dear Ed, Last night myself and some friends went to see Mamma Mia at the new theatre. Not knowing what to expect, I found the production highly pro-

Why would you want to do it? Dear Ed, In a recent edition on pg 3 you led with the story “Former MP Colin King to run as mayor”. Now this story has been circulating for a while now, but I’m left wondering what Colin can add to the role of mayor that he didn’t do in the six years as our past National Party member - in office that is? Well he did support the spraying of methyl bromide, so we could export more logs. And he did support moving our ferry terminal to Clifford Bay, both of which are good for business, I think! The platform he is standing on about building up business is the same as when he was in office, but in all that time what new business did he bring in? And yet he was our MP, who incidentally only had a rating - given by the national

press - of 2/10. It should be noted that one automatically gets a two for just attending parliament regularly! So is he saying that his successor, Stuart Smith, isn’t doing his job? Or that our councillor Trevor Hook, whose job it is to bring in potential new businesses, is failing also? Or what of our existing mayor Alistair Sowman, where is he failing us? It is all the more interesting that Marlborough recently got a good wrap-up by NZ stats, but maybe they got it wrong too! No, I’m sorry Colin, but after speaking to far more knowledgeable people than myself - yes there are some - I could find no one that could tell me why. Sorry, not for me! Chris Davies -Picton

The late Russell Matthews standing behind his counter.

Fond memories The recent opening of Redwoodtown’s new Countdown Supermarket has brought back a flood of memories for Shirley Hawtin and Janette Simmons, whose parents owned the very first store in Redwoodtown. By Celeste Alexander It’s March 1947 and Russell and Marj Matthews, and their three-year-old twin daughters Shirley and Janette, were preparing to open the doors to their ‘Redwoodtown Store’. The shop was stocked and the family was determined that their business would not fail. Russell later wrote in his memoir; “It was a gamble but the word failure was not in our vocabulary.” “Frank Southgate, the owner of a large grocery business in High Street, had talked to me regarding his own venture. He, like so many others, felt we would be struggling to make a go of it. “He reckoned we would need to take 40 pounds in the first week to break even... Turnover for that first week was 80 pounds, twice Frank’s figure.. a great start.” And a failure it wasn’t, thanks to the determination and support the family shared with one another. It was Russell’s plan to go out in the morning door to door, taking orders and making deliveries in the afternoon, while Marj looked after the shop. The family did not have the money to buy a delivery van so Russell made a trailer to attach to a bicycle, holding up to six orders at a time. It was a challenge for Marj who had threeyear-old twins Shirley and Janette on top of the financial and book work side of the business as well. Russell later upgraded his trailer and bicycle to a new Fordson van and had the name Redwoodtown Store signwritten on it.

The business was doing well. The family welcomed two sons, Graeme and Peter, and all the children became an integral part in the everyday running of the store. The family lived at the rear of the shop in the living quarters. Shirley recalls having to help weigh all the stock every night. “Everything we sold was in bulk so after dinner we would have to do the weighing and make up orders. “There were perks to it though. “Shirley and I would sneak into the shop

“I remember the large scales on the bench. We had to cut the bacon, weigh the icing sugar and we had the bread delivered unwrapped.” at night and get lollies which we would put under our pillows and eat in bed,” Janette laughs. It was a real family effort running the Redwoodtown Store, and coincidentally Janette’s late husband Doug also happened to work as a grocer’s boy. “We have so many happy memories from that store. They were good times,” they both say. During the 60’s the housing in the Red-

woodtown area began to grow and with it came a change in the way people were served. It moved from behind the counter service to the introduction of self service. Business boomed, the store’s floor space expanded and a name change saw it now called a ‘supermarket’. In 1971 Russell and Marj decided to sell to Grocers United Stores of Christchurch. Russell writes; “I was glad this was about to happen. The first supermarket had opened in town and naturally our business was losing ground.” “On looking back I wonder how I spent time, but one thing is for sure I was never idle.”

Russell was often away travelling with supporters following the All Blacks to many countries and playing bowls. According to Shirley and Janette one thing that people remembered Russell and Marj for during their time running the store was their kindness and generosity towards others. “If people couldn’t afford to pay straight away, he would still give them their items. “There were many times he gave extra on top of people’s orders because he knew they were struggling, and we weren’t rich but he always thought of others,” they say. Russell and Marj are also remembered for contributing to the growth of Redwoodtown by building new shops for several businesses across the road from their shop.

By Cathie Bell Picton’s Kaipupu Point is to become a new home for young rowi kiwi. The Department of Conservation is to launch the rowi crèche at a blessing ceremony for two kiwi at Waikawa Marae on Saturday, along with the Kaipupu Point Mainland Island Society, Te Runanga o Makaawhio and Te Atiawa. Two four-month-old rowi will be a part of the blessing ceremony and afterwards will be released onto the Kaipupu Point Sounds Wildlife Sanctuary. Nine young rowi are to be the first sheltered at the sanctuary. DOC South Westland Operations Manager Jo Macpherson says predator-free Motuara Island in the Marlborough Sounds has been the main crèche location for juvenile rowi kiwi until this point. More space is needed for juvenile rowi due to the success of the DOC and Kiwis for kiwi rowi programme in increasing the numbers of New Zealand’s rarest kiwi from below 200 to more than 400, she says. Kaipupu Point Mainland Island Society

Chairman Barry Maister says becoming a rowi crèche is a significant milestone for the Kaipupu Point Sounds Wildlife Sanctuary. “This is incredibly exciting and a testament to the many thousands of volunteer hours trapping and pest monitoring on the sanctuary over the last 11 years. “From day one of the project we have looked forward to the time we could welcome kiwi onto Kaipupu Point.”

To get the most out of a heat pump, it’s important to choose an efficient model and use it properly - here’s how. Heat pump checklist Insulate first, starting with your ceiling and floor. You’ll be able to buy a smaller heat pump and your home will be cheaper to heat and cool effectively. Choose a quality brand from a reputable supplier that offers at least a five-year warranty on parts and labour. Make sure it’s correctly sized for the room you want to heat. If it’s too small, it will have to work harder and cost you more to run. Your supplier will be able to discuss this with you. Make sure it is well-installed. Ask your installer if they comply with the EECA good practice guide to heat pump installation. Make sure it’s right for your climate. As the temperature drops, so does the performance of many heat pumps. A good quality unit - sized and installed correctly - should perform effectively down

to minus 15°C. If you need your heat pump to perform at these temperatures, ask your heat pump supplier for advice. Using heat pumps wisely Only heat when you need it. Don’t leave your heat pump on all day if you’re not there. Use the timer to turn on the heat pump shortly before you get home and turn it off when you don’t need it. Only heat the space you’re actually using. Shut doors and curtains to keep the heat in. Set the thermostat to a healthy temperature. Aim for a minimum of 18ºC while you’re using a space (or 20ºC if you have children, elderly or sick people in the home) and 16ºC in bedrooms overnight. Clean the filter regularly inside and outside, as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Avoid using it as an air conditioner when you can. Try opening windows and doors on either side of the house to create a through-breeze. Close curtains on hot, sunny days to keep you home cool and shady.

Symptoms of dampness and mould Are your walls, floors and ceilings damp? This could be causing mould to grow and affect your family’s health. • Musty smells in rooms. • Damp or mouldy clothes or shoes in wardrobes. • Mould forming behind paintings and mirrors. • Mould, stains or watermarks on ceilings or walls. • Rotting wood in the structure of your house. • Damp or mould under the house. • Condensation on windows - especially in bedrooms Sources of moisture The average NZ family produces around eight litres of moisture in the home each day from activities like cooking, showers and breathing.

This is normal and can be managed with the right balance of insulation, heating and ventilation. Dampness can also be caused by moisture getting into your house from outside, underneath or through leaky plumbing. These sources of moisture are often hidden and can go undetected for a long time, causing damage to your home. Tackle the problem by looking for the source of the dampness. If you can’t solve it with dehumidifiers and ventilation systems, call the experts in. A window specialist can indentify problem areas where condensation builds up, while builders and insulation installers can check over the whole house.

You wouldn’t drink dirty water... Why breathe dirty air? Cleanaire Heat reCovery ventilators Continuously:

Here’s how a genuine* Cleanaire Heat Recovery Ventilator works

1. Reduce humidity and remove condensation 2. Exhaust stale humid polluted air 3. Replace stale air with fresh dry warm outdoor air 4. Transfer heat (ie. from lounge log fire) around the home. 5. Saves up to 8 times more energy than it costs to run. 6. Reduce greenhouse gas *WARNING - don’t be fooled by imitations! A genuine Heat Recovery Ventilator must have three components; emissions by recycling energy. 1. A supply fan 2. An exhaust fan 3. An energy exchanger. Otherwise it’s not a Heat Recovery Ventilator!

Consult Cuddon for all your air conditioning & heat recovery ventilation needs - we are experts in our field - we will quote, supply and install.

Winter Warmth 2016 The right wood for a warm home There are a lot of different firewood types and to the inexperienced it may seem a difficult choice to make. But if you know what type of fire you have and what type of fire you like to burn, then the choice becomes a lot easier. Pine firewood Pine is a hot burning firewood and a staple across New Zealand due to its availability and price per cord/m3. Radiata pine has a lot of resin or gum in the wood which is why it burns so fast and hot and likes to pop and crackle. It is very easy to light which makes it a good wood to start your fire with and plus it smells great – gives you that Christmas tree smell during the winter. Manuka firewood Hot and long burning, great once fires going. Manuka is a favourite of New Zealand for use as firewood as it is a hard wood, which burns both hot and long. This firewood needs to be properly dried, preferably 18 months or over. Plus to get the most energy and value out of this wood, it

should be burnt on fires that are already well established. Gum firewood Gum is a hardwood timber. As a firewood it is slow burning and very clean burning. Gum produces maximum heat output as it burns at a very high temperature. As it is a hard wood it can be difficult to start the fire with and more suitable to use once your fire is already going. Purchase gum firewood along with a softwood such as pine firewood or poplar firewood – which are both great for getting fires going quickly. Gum burns best once it has one-two years to season. The lower the moisture content in gum (and all wood) the more efficient it will burn and thus the more heat it will produce. Gum is known as a great ‘night time fire wood’, to put on the fire once it has been going for a while, the house is already hot and you just need to pop a piece on the fire every hour Cutting wood for next year’s winter? Consider the wood types before starting the chainsaw. of so to maintain the warm temperature.

Heat, eat and enjoy If you have a woodburner with a hotplate on top, take advantage of the fire to cook your dinner for no extra cost and very little effort. Slow-cooked Lamb, Apricot, and Olive Tagine Ingredients: 700g lamb shoulder, trimmed and cut into 2cm pieces 4 carrots, cut into 2cm pieces 1 medium onion, chopped 1/2 cup dried apricots, halved 1/2 cup pitted green olives 2 cloves garlic, chopped 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger kosher salt and black pepper 1 cup couscous Directions:

In your cast iron pan mix together the lamb, carrots, onion, apricots, olives, garlic, flour, paprika, cumin, cinnamon, ginger, 1 teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon pepper, and ½ cup water. Cover with a lid and cook until the lamb and vegetables are tender, on low for eight hours or on high for five hours. Ten minutes before serving, cook the couscous according to the package directions. Serve and enjoy.

By Cathie Bell Marlborough artist Triska Blumenfeld and her world-renowned naïve paintings have been immortalised in a biography “Triska Blumenfeld: Naive...and proud of it!” to be launched in Blenheim on Friday. Her niece Jennifer Wilkinson has written the 160 page book, featuring more than 300 pictures, and she will be launching it at the Millennium Art Gallery at 5.30pm on Friday. Triska was declared a Marlborough Living Treasure last year. However, Jennifer says she was more intrigued by Triska’s distinguished career before she settled in New Zealand. “Triska’s journey from Bali to Singapore, India, Italy, Fiji, Western Samoa and lastly New Zealand is a

fascinating story celebrating people and their joyous activities,” she says. Initially inspired by the skills of Balinese artisans in the 1950s, Blumenfeld was captivated throughout her travels by people growing crops, fishing, playing sport and having fun at village bazaars, markets, festivals and other community events. Triska Blumenfeld’s work is represented in galleries and private collections around the world. She is the only New Zealand artist to be included in the ‘World Encyclopedia of Naïve Art’ edited by Bihalji-Merin and Tomasevic and A file photo of Marlborough artist published in the UK in 1984. His varicose vein clinics have proved so popular that David finds that he no longer needs to spread the word about how life changing the treatments he offers can be, because his patients are doing it for him. Now the word is out, David finds he is regularly treating family, friends and workmates of past patients who are enjoying the

results of reassuringly local, non-invasive procedures, having just spent the last summer wearing shorts for the first time in years. Yet despite this, David says he’s often surprised at some of the misconceptions that surround varicose veins and their treatment, so we asked him six questions that we thought you should know the answer to.

Q: What’s the deal on different types of visible veins? A: Varicose veins and spider veins are not the same thing. Varicose veins are generally thick and blue, protruding from the legs; they occur when one-way valves don’t work, blood begins to collect in the

incompetent vein rather than continuing back toward your heart. Spider veins are smaller, thinner blood vessels, closer to the surface and visible under the skin

Q: Is it true that women suffer more from varicose veins than men? A: Whilst pregnancy and menopause are factors in the formation of varicose veins, genetics is probably the main issue, so we treat lots of men who have varicose veins too. As an aside, it is definitely a

thirties for varicose veins. Our age range to date is 17 to 94 years old!

Q: When it comes to varicose veins we’ve heard vanity is the name of the game, is that true? A: There is a common misconception that the major reason for vein treatment is to look better. Whilst you will look great following treatment and be able to wear shorts again, veins are definitely not just a cosmetic problem. They can cause heavy,

painful, tired legs, with associated cramps, skin discolouration, itchiness, and restlessness, and if left untreated can carry longer term health risks such as, dermatitis, ulcers and even deep vein thrombosis, (blood clots) especially with long distance travel.

Q: Is it true that varicose vein treatment involves a hospital stay? A: In the past, invasive surgical stripping was the only way to treat the appearance and symptoms of varicose veins. This was (and is) expensive, requiring general anesthesia and hospitalisation, and more painful. At enhanceskin we offer Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS), the

minimally invasive Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) – the current ‘gold standard’ treatment, as well as the brand new VenaSeal - a medical glue! All are walk in and walk out treatments, you can drive home afterwards, and are generally able to be at work the next day!

Q: That sounds amazing, but is treatment affordable? A: Enhanceskin has affiliated provider status with Southern Cross, and is accepted by other insurance companies. Our aim has always been to remove potential financial

Former All Black signs with Tasman Makos By Cathie Bell Former All Black Zac Guildford has signed to play for the Tasman Makos this season. Makos head coach Leon MacDonald confirmed yesterday that Zac will join the Makos after he finishes his Super Rugby commitments with the Sydney-based Waratahs. Leon says Zac’s experience makes him ideal for the team. “We’ve lost one player, Viliami Lolohea, with an injured ankle, and needed a replacement. “We’ve got an injury cloud over James Lowe with his shoulder, so we’re going to lose both starting wingers potentially. We needed someone with experience.” Zac has that. He has represented New Zealand at both the 2007 and 2008 Junior World Cups and was first selected for the All Blacks in 2009, debuting against Wales in Cardiff later that year.

He has played 11 tests for the All Blacks until 2012 and also played twice for the Maori All Blacks. He has played 18 games for the Hurricanes and another 61 for the Crusaders between 2008 and 2014 when he signed for French Top 14 side Clermont Auvergne. He has also won gold with the New Zealand sevens team at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. Leon says Zac’s experience is going to be a great asset for the Makos. “I don’t think anyone questions his ability to play the game…He’s really quick, he has a smart rugby brain, he’s in the right place at the right time.” Zac’s past has been controversial after problems with alcohol, but Leon says the teams he has been working with have addressed that.

inbrief

Players off

Two Makos players are leaving to play rugby overseas. Tasman Makos and Highlanders favourite Joe Wheeler has signed to play for Japanese rugby club Suntory Sungoliath after the 2015 Super Rugby season ends, meaning he will miss the Makos’ national provincial championship campaign. And Makos and Highlanders Number 10 Marty Banks has signed with Italian team Benetton Rugby Treviso, leaving after the national provincial championship tournament.

Grand traverse approaches

Zac Guildford in action for the All Blacks against South Africa in 2011. Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson has reassured Leon that Zac is ‘in a good space’, Leon says. “Off field, his life’s on track. Everything is pointing to him being a good option for us. “There is an opportunity for

both of us, mutual benefit. “There is a lot of upside for both parties.” Leon says Zac is keen to play rugby in New Zealand again, and is looking forward to starting with the Makos.

Competitions even in football Four teams share 15 points in the Men’s Division One Football table, setting up an exciting and close second round. Blenheim Valley United are in the best position with a game in hand after sitting out the week with a bye.

Blenheim Valley Masters snatched a 3-2 win over Woodbourne after Ben Clarke scored the winner. Central have maintained some good momentum with a 2-0 win over Rangers City thanks to strikes from Andrew McCaa and Scott Wilkinson,

while Blenheim Valley Cobras have joined the mix at the top beating last years depleted champions Central Pirates 2-1. The 2nd division is also very competitive with Clubs of Marlborough Rangers benefitting from a 3-1 win over Picton Crow Tavern, and Rangers

Megan takes squash champs Blenheim’s Megan Craig and Oliver Johnston have claimed the South Island Championships titles for 2016. The championships were held in Blenheim last weekend at the Stadium 2000. Megan played in both the women’s and the men’s grade, to give her extra preparation for a tournament in Hong Kong this week. Both the top seeds came through to win, with Megan beating Nikki Kennedy in the women’s open final. She had just finished a game in the Men’s Open 3/4 playoff game against Quinn Udy. Organisers say Megan dominated the centre of the court, making Kennedy do all the work, before claiming the match in ‘devastatingly strong style’. The Men’s Open final saw a battle of the two

Masters slipping up against Picton No Names with a 2 all draw. Redwood Renegades picked up some valuable points beating Rangers United 3-0 while Trojans battled out a 2 all draw with the much improved Redwood Masters.

“The difference between good and great is never one thing, it’s everything!” “Having spent the April holidays in Blenheim looking for a house we left disappointed, no house, nothing to even a maybe, plus a real estate agent that we felt had not met our needs, was not listening to what we were saying/asking nor cared about us. The following weekend we saw a house advertised by your agency and Deb Webster was the agent. Since then we have had the best treatment, advice, care, honesty and guidance. Deb has been outstanding in her field. I would just like to take this opportunity to highlight her exceptional professionalism and to let you know how much she has helped us. As a result we have recommended her to another person - however, they had already heard about her (not surprisingly). All our questions and queries were answered on the day and I can honestly say that Deb has made this stressful relocation a whole lot easier. So thanks to Deb and her attention to detail, we are moving in July to a house that will suit our needs at this given time. Many thanks Rob and Penny.”
