Singing big

Story and photo by Cathie Bell Marlborough is hosting the top of the South regional finals for The Big Sing later this month, and there will be more choirs competing than usual. Nelson-Marlborough regional co-ordinator Robin Randall says this year’s event will be in the new theatre, and he expects it to be a huge success with 400 singers from 13 choirs competing, up from the usual eight. Most schools are competing. On June 22, the choirs sing for judges during the afternoon, before performing in a gala concert that evening. Continued on page 2. Record number of choirs line up for The Big Sing competition Continued from page 1 The Big Sing is an annual contest held nationally for secondary school choirs. Run by the New Zealand Choral Federation, the Big Sing is one of the largest New Zealand-wide events in the school calendar and the federation understands it is the only nation-wide event of its kind in the world. The top of the South regional event has 13 choirs registered, including the Marlborough Girl’s College senior choir Ovation, which Robin directs. Most secondary schools in the region have registered a choir to compete, he says. Across New Zealand, 255 choirs registered this year, around 9,500 registered singers from 153 schools in the ten NZCF Big Sing regions.

Robin says three adjudicators travel around those regions. There is one adjudicator for the four South Island regions: David Griffiths from Hamilton. On the last weekend in June, the adjudicators get together and decide the top 24 of those 255 choirs will go to the national finals to be held in August in Dunedin. It is a fiercely competitive event, he says. Already there are more schools entered in the top of the South event than there is usually, and Robin attributes that to this being the first time the Big Sing has been held in the new ASB Civic Theatre. “The draw of the new theatre seems to be an attraction.” All these school choirs with about 400 singers will converge on Blenheim on June 22, Robin

says. “Each choir will have a time to get on stage and have a sound check, and the judging starts at 1.30pm. “In the evening, the gala concert is held, starting at 6pm. That seems a bit early, but it is winter and it will be dark. “vzThe concert will be about two hours’ long, he says. At the end of the gala concert, there will be a prizegiving for the choirs competing on the day. “But nothing will be given away about the national placings.” That is reserved for a special release on July 1 when the 24 top choirs are named for the finals in Dunedin.

Rowi kiwi captivates By Cathie Bell The blessing ceremony at Waikawa Marae before transferring two kiwi to Kaipupu Point was hugely exciting, organisers say. Two four-month-old rowi were part of the blessing ceremony and afterwards were released onto the Kaipupu Point Sounds Wildlife Sanctuary. Nine young rowi are to be the first sheltered at the sanctuary. The kiwi captivated those who attended the ceremony. Kaipupu Point Sounds Wildlife Sanctuary Project Coordinator Rachel Russell says more than 100 people were at the marae to see the birds.

“It was very captivating…The opportunity for these kids to see kiwi was very exciting.” She says there were ‘lots of excited people’ at the event. “It’s the ultimate for the volunteers, all the hard work they’ve put in, this is just a fantastic achievement.” Kaipupu Point is now a rowi crèche, taking extra birds from predator-free Motuara Island in the Marlborough Sounds. More space is needed for juvenile rowi due to the success of the DOC and Kiwis for kiwi rowi programme in increasing the numbers of New Zealand’s rarest kiwi from below 200 to more than 400.

Department of Conservation's Tracey Dearlove shows, from left, Kurt Meredyth-Young, Xavier Meredyth-Young, and Fynn Russell a rowi kiwi at Waikawa Marae.

History brings the past close to home Story and photo by Cathie Bell Writing her family history has helped Aileen Rowe find out a lot about herself. The 87 year-old Blenheim woman started life in Canvastown, before moving to Havelock, and later to Blenheim when she married Jack Rowe. She has now written a book about her family history, stretching back from the 1800s to her children’s youth, and her book “The Stages of My Life” is being launched on Saturday afternoon at the Springlands Bowling Club. Aileen says she has always enjoyed writing, doing some with the Women’s Institute. Her granddaughter Jacqui encouraged her to write a history 20 years ago, and Aileen says she started the project again more recently when son Bernie told her to ‘get on with it’ and it should be ‘warts and all’. “I said I probably wouldn’t have all the warts in it.” But she certainly did find some – her grandmother was left in a Nelson orphanage after her great-grandfather left the family in Melbourne to set up shop on the West Coast. Her great-grandmother followed him with the two children, but she died within a year of moving to New Zealand and the children were put in a home. “He was always in trouble in New Zealand… Pilfering and things like that, although I think he only had one stint in jail.” The great-grandparents were Irish, which Aileen is thrilled about, having always had an appreciation for Irish culture and perspective on life. “He was Irish, and a bit of an entertainer…I wondered if that

AirNZ cuts Chch flights Air NZ has cut its route between Blenheim and Christchurch from July 31, saying the route loses money. The airline has retired its 19-seat Beechcraft planes, bringing in 50-seat Q300s, and it says the loss making Blenheim – Christchurch service does not have sufficient passenger demand to sustain a 50 seat aircraft service, despite the continued efforts of Air New Zealand and local stakeholders. Customers booked to travel on suspended services past 31 July will be offered the choice of a full refund or travelling via an alternative port.

Thirty-one infringement notices were issued by police during a heavy vehicle safety operation during Road Safety Week. Inspector Bruce O’Brien, Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit Manager, says a focus on heavy vehicle safety across the South Island has seen over 1000 heavy vehicles stopped and 104 infringement notices issued over four days of checkpoints in Blenheim, Ashburton, Christchurch City and North Canterbury. Across the four sites, 33 infringement notices were issued in Christchurch City, 31 in Blenheim, 21 in North Canterbury and 19 in Ashburton.

was where I got my love of entertainment from, my acting.” Her grandmother married a Swedish man who had jumped ship in Nelson and walked to Canvastown where he’d been told gold could be picked up like pebbles. Aileen’s mother was the youngest of the 13 children in that family, and she married a man from the North Island who was friends with the Leov family in the Rai Valley. “They were like family to us… My father did come south and married in the 1920s. There were nine of us.” Her father died early, when

the youngest child was only two months old, and the family had to move from Canvastown to Havelock. “There were shops! If we wanted something, we had to work to earn it.” She had a job from about 11 years of age and studied nursing. She married Jack, a builder, and they lived in Blenheim. “Our marriage was pretty fullon, with Jack’s building and me doing the paperwork. “He joined the Masonic Lodge, he was a saloon car racer, he spent all our money on bloody cars. “I got into the Women’s Institute,

the Boathouse Theatre. “He built our last house in White Street about the time of the Farmer’s fire. “When he finished, Jack said ‘that’s the last one, I’m going out of here in a wooden overcoat’. “He almost did too.” While the book details the family history, and a grandson designed the book’s cover, family members have yet to read it, Aileen says. “I hope the family like it… It’s not a long book, it’s not like a Bryce Courtney novel. There are lots of photos, stories, the odd poem, it’s just a whole mixture really.”

By Cathie Bell The Nelson Marlborough West Coast Brass Band Association Provincial Contest is to be held in Blenheim over this Queen’s Birthday weekend, and the top brass are going to be making an impact in town. Contest convenor Brian Nicholas says seven brass bands and 75 soloists from Nelson, West Coast, Canterbury and Marlborough will compete for titles at ASB Theatre Marlborough over the three-day weekend event. There will be about 200 competitors in town, with bands from Nelson, Motueka, Westport, and Marlborough

as well as guest bands from Rangiora, Christchurch and Timaru attending. “It’s a huge field.” The contest begins with a street march on Saturday, beginning at midday from outside Cycle World on Charles Street, proceeding south along Seymour Street and ending on the corner of Charles and Queen Streets. Brian says it’s not often Marlburians have the opportunity to enjoy seven brass bands parading through the streets of Blenheim and he urges locals to came and join the fun of the street march. Bands start competing in the ASB Theatre on Saturday afternoon, when each

band will present a hymn or sacred item, a test selection, and a stage march to chief adjudicator Kevin Dell. Solo and party events will be held at the ASB Theatre on Sunday morning, with the bands presenting a judged variety concert in the Theatre from 3pm on Sunday afternoon. The final events held on Monday morning will be the premier and teenage air and variation solos. Brian says all events are open to the public. Entry to junior solo and party events is free with a gold coin donation for entry to the two premier solo events.

Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Café and restaurants in Marlborough were challenged to make their outdoor dining areas smokefree all day for World Smokefree Day yesterday. JAys Cafe on Charles Street was one of 27 cafes and restaurants involved, with owner Aamai Bradshaw and barista Michael Boyd sticking smokefree stickers to their takeaway coffee cups, hanging balloons, and encouraging customers. The Marlborough Cancer Society and Nelson Marlborough Health’s Public Health Service worked with the Smokefree Marlborough Coalition to expand smokefree community spaces in Marlborough. The smokefree all day initiative was a way of raising awareness and getting the community on board. Health promoter Felicity Spencer says the aspirational 2025 goal is about “making a commitment to our children and grandchildren to be free” from exposure to tobacco and tobacco use. “I encourage people to make their homes and cars smokefree spaces and ask their friends and whanau not to smoke around children. “It’s about raising the awareness of why it’s important to be smokefree, to stay healthy and be there for your whanau.

Former MP gets degree Blenheim Toyota By Cathie Bell Former MP Colin King has graduated with a bachelor of business studies degree with a double major in accounting and management. Colin says completing a degree has always been an ambition. He started the degree five years ago, completing the minimum of forty assignments and twenty final examinations by distance learning. Endeavouring to complete a degree extramurally by distance learning ‘actually suited my circumstances and gave me the opportunity to weave my study programme around my full-time work’, he says. He did the degree through the Open Polytechnic out of Lower Hutt, an organisation with 70 years of experience with distance learning, which was “also a plus’, Colin says. “The tutors were always very encouraging and made me feel like I was in an actual class.” Working out of Blenheim accounting firm, Parkers Business Solutions, for the past year has provided him with much needed support to complete the more technically challenging papers, he says. At his graduation ceremony, there were

about one hundred other graduates, Colin says, but just 12 wore the gold lined gowns identifying those who had completed a business management degree. “With three of my family present in an audience of 400, this was truly an uplifting experience and one I wouldn’t have missed for the world and made completing the journey all the more enjoyable. “Will I consider doing further studies? Absolutely, as I am convinced that life-long learning is essential.”

Measles in the community By Cathie Bell The Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service has confirmed a third case of measles, and this person has been admitted to Nelson Hospital. Medical Officer of Health Dr Andrew Lindsay says that the new case appears to be unrelated to the first two, and that this indicates that measles is likely to be in the community. The best thing for people to do is to make sure they and their children are up to date with the MMR (Measles Mumps Rubella) vaccine, he says. “Check with your GP to be sure, and your GP can also give you the best immunisation advice for your circumstances.” He says measles is highly infectious to non-immune people. “Measles can spread to others in a waiting room. This is why it is important – if you have measles symptoms – to call your GP or Healthline first – before going to your doctor or medical centre. “Measles starts with a fever and usually a cough or runny nose, and perhaps sore, red eyes before the rash appears.” People born before 1969, and people who

have had two doses of the MMR vaccine are ‘almost certainly’ immune to measles. People who have definitely had measles in the past are also immune, he says. “But, if in doubt, check with your doctor to see if you have had the recommended number of MMR vaccines.” The Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service is currently tracking people who have come into contact with the new case. These people will be contacted and informed about what they need to do; if they are not immune to measles they will be required to go into isolation for 14 days. There are currently five people in isolation in Nelson, Andrew says. Three of these people are contacts of the two measles cases still in isolation. The Public Health Service is currently monitoring those people in isolation to check that they aren’t developing any measles symptoms. Regional GPs are on alert to possible cases presenting and will assess and notify the Public Health Service if appropriate. Nelson Marlborough Health is working with the Ministry of Health and other DHBs to develop a co-ordinated response to the outbreak.

I’m not sure it’s critical.

Don’t change, it’s fine.

There’s a stigma to Blenheim. I chose to put Marlborough on our t-shirts.

No, but it’s an excellent way to get people learning and talking about us.

No, because the idea has been dreamed up by two people and they should communicate with the public before they float ideas.

Dear Ed, So, here we have the Tb testing figures for New Zealand from 2004 to 2014: 19,289,983 were tested, 3936 had a positive reaction. Of these 926 were confirmed as positive. Dear Ed, Colin King in his letter on the “parking mess” is so correct. Let’s look at it simply. Council build a $6.3m car park building to accommodate theatre goers a couple of years early. It is little used at times when you have to pay (day time). At theatre times (evenings) it is free. The theatre does not have shows every day (more’s the pity as it needs the revenue to pay another debt). Even the popular Mamma Mia seems to fill only the ground level at night..and it’s free. The parking account is in debt. Solution? You guessed it. Charge more and impose parking fees on previously free areas. Typical “robbing Peter to pay Paul” so that we collectively pay for all the Pauls out there able to afford a theatre ticket. You really have to wonder about the logic sometimes, a letter on that would exceed the word count here! Roll on elections and look forward to a rough few years as the new crew tackle a legacy of unresolved issues. Poor Paul! Meter Feeder

Sunk in the memory In two years’ time, it will be the 50th anniversary of New Zealand’s worst maritime disaster, the sinking of the Wahine. Marlborough’s Peter Jerram was on board and he tells Cathie Bell about what is being done to remember that event. The iconic picture of people being rescued from a Wahine lifeboat on Seatoun Beach almost 50 years ago shows a young Peter Jerram in the back. He was picked up out of the water and was perched on the end, soaking wet and grateful when the boat was pulled up on the beach. “I’d been looking at the water, thinking it was probably warmer in there than it was on the boat.” Peter is one of the trustees of the newly-established Wahine50 Trust, set up to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Wahine’s sinking and the deaths of 50 people within Wellington harbour. A former Marlborough veterinarian and published author, Peter is writing a book about the Wahine disaster and encourages other survivors to register and share their memories on the Wahine50 Trust website. He is keen to talk with others involved such as rescuers and people who have photos of the event. Peter was a member of the Lincoln College, as it was then, cricket team, travelling to Palmerston North for the universities’ Easter sports tournament. The sailing was a mid-week one, and it was too early before Easter and the school holidays for there to be many families with children onboard, he says. Most people were middle-aged, and then there were

the three southern universities’ cricket teams. There were 600 people onboard the Wahine in April 1968, and the ship was sailing overnight from Lyttelton to Wellington, arriving at the heads to Wellington harbour at the same time as Cyclone Giselle. The ship took on water and lost steering, hitting Barrett Reef, and coming to rest at Steeple Rock near Seatoun, where it hit the bottom and listed onto its side. People were evacuated into lifeboats, but the tremendous winds and currents blew many people to the other side of the harbour to Eastbourne where the shore was rocky. People were pounded by waves onto the rocks and that is where most of the deaths occurred. The Lincoln cricket team was relatively unscathed by the sinking, Peter says. “Our captain injured his foot, but that was it. For us, we were young, fit and healthy.” After the event, no-one really talked about it, he says. “It must have been devastating for some, but when you’re 20, you don’t really think about it much. “It was the mores of the time. The generation of our parents who’d been through war and you just got on with it.” But 25 years later, at a commemoration, the emotion really came out, he says.

Rapaura man Peter Jerram was on the Wahine when it sank in Wellington harbour during a cyclone in 1968. He is now writing a book about the disaster and is on the Wahine50 Trust.

“It drew out a lot I hadn’t realised was there. “It was quite a major thing. This was quite a significant moment, pretty extraordinary. “The Wahine, it was quite a modern ferry, only a couple of years old. It was one of the first roll-on roll-off ferries.” The Wahine disaster not only affected those onboard and their

families, it also impacted Wellington communities, where residents of Seatoun and Eastbourne marked the event in ceremonies that have grown larger over the years. Peter says it led to the setting up of the Coastguard in Wellington. “The Coastguard didn’t exist before the Wahine and was set up afterwards as a result. “On the day it was just volunteers,

people and their boats, police, the harbour board sent people out, but there was no co-ordinated rescue operation.” Peter says the trust is working to have a lasting legacy. It is fundraising for the Wellington and Mana Coastguards and working with Weta Workshop and Te Papa to develop a museum exhibition.

Marine Matters “There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind”. ~Washington Irving

Boatbuilding Alterations • Painting Repairs & Maintenance Haulouts 03 573 6769 • 0274 882 573 westshoremarine@clear.net.nz

The rebirth of Seatech Marine From grease under their nails to marine lube coursing their veins, the Jamieson bothers, Gavin and Malcolm, exemplify the essence of traditional within the marine industry, having immersed themselves in various aspects of it their whole life. Their father kick-started things back in the seventies by establishing the Volvo Penta and Mercury dealership in Kaikoura and the brands have become synonymous with the boys independent successes over the years. Both raced power boats locally and various classes internationally, and both went on to develop marine businesses: Jamieson Marine in Picton for Gavin, while Malcolm had Leisure Workz/KRB Racing, building composite race boats for the national/ international market. With Malcolm being a Formula 1 Guru, this led Seatech to being a Mercury HiPerformance Dealer. With over 25 years in the marine industry, the brothers have earned huge respect amongst their customers, it’s no surprise they have joined forces to maximise their strengths and to take their business to a new level. Since September, Gavin and Malcolm, along with their respective partners, Sheriee and Zara, have taken over and rebranded Seatech Marine - a name known and trusted by many. Ironically, Seatech Marine was originally established in the eighties by Zara’s brother-in-law and, at some stage, all four

Gavin and Sheriee Jamieson, with Malcom and Zara Jamieson.

have previously worked at Seatech Marine, so know the business intimately. It also fits with their business ‘family’ philosophy, which extends to professional colleagues, staff, and customers. “Of course we want to make Seatech Marine bigger, brighter, and better, but not at the expense of our traditional roots,” Gavin says. “We grew up with Volvo and Mercury, and know the brands inside out, so by combining our skills and talents, we now have something new to offer our customers, which will save them time, stress, and money.”

Seatech Marine has taken over the ‘Extreme’ Marlborough agency, with a new model arriving this month. Gavin, Malcolm, and the team at Seatech invite existing and new customers to pop in and check out the new Extreme 570 Game King HT. Perfectly situated at Waikawa Marina, the Gateway to the Sounds, Seatech translates into less time on land, more time on the water, and more money left in your pocket.

By Celeste Alexander Comradery, fishing trips and beach barbecues are just a few of the things on offer when you become a member of the Marlborough Anglers and Surf Casters Club. It’s one of the oldest fishing clubs in Marlborough with a membership of around 75 currently, although more people are warmly welcome to join, says vice president David Miller. David joined eight years ago and says the club has a huge amount to offer. “We hold regular functions, undertake fishing trips on a charter vessel either in the Cook Strait or open sea for groper, blue cod and tarakihi. “We also run surf cast sections and once a month try to organise trips out with members. Members have a lot of fun and enjoy the comradery,” he says. According to David the club also has members who are trout fishermen too.

“We also have a lot of female members... most years more often than not, the women take out the trophies,” he laughs. “It’s a club for anyone who enjoys fishing and surf casting, so I encourage people to make contact if they are interested.” What many people may not know is that the club has a really unique amenity. “The club has a holiday house which sleeps around eight people, located in Sandy Bay. It gives access to recreational fishing and relaxation. “We have rebuilt the deck, it has great outdoor space and is two minutes walk from the beach. There’s a boat that can be hired as well if people want to do a bit of fishing,” David says. The club is having its general meeting on June 22 at the Blenheim Bowling Club at 7pm. Anyone interested in joining is welcome to attend.

Mobile servicing a bonus For many boat owners, particularly those from out of town, getting that service or repair work done can be an absolute hassle. To help take this away Marlborough Watercraft has a fully maintained service vehicle, and even a boat to come to you on site. This means the team now has the ability

to go throughout the Sounds. They also have some ‘onsite’ facilities in Waikawa and mobile diagnostics so there’s not too much Marlborough Watercraft can’t complete. There is even a trailer available so that the team can meet you at the ramp to either complete the service or repair work at the Waikawa facility or back in the workshop.

Just give Marlborough Watercraft a call at either business, and they will plan the work to be completed, co-ordinating the jobs to minimise some of the costs and hopefully give you one less thing to manage. Don’t leave your marine servicing until late in the year... call Marlborough Watercraft today.

Opawa Bridge Replacement Building a new bridge for SH1 over the Opawa River Until Thursday 9 June, the NZ Transport Agency is seeking your views on the preferred proposal to replace the Opawa Bridge on State Highway 1 with a new two-lane bridge on the western side of the existing bridge. The existing bridge will be kept for pedestrians and cyclists. Last year the NZ Transport Agency launched an investigation of the Wairau and Opawa Bridges to improve travel on State Highway 1 north of Blenheim. It was identified as part of the Government’s Accelerated Regional Roading Package (ARRP), which provided funding to progress a selection of regionally important state highway projects in order to address economic efficiency, safety, and resilience issues on our regional transport networks. Following the investigation, the Wairau Bridge was found to be in serviceable condition. The Opawa Bridge, however, was identified for replacement and we know upgrading it is a high priority for Marlborough District Council and residents. In January 2016 the Government announced a preferred option to build this new bridge at an estimated cost between $14 and $17.5 million.

Last week to have your say

It’s the last chance to review the investigation findings and give feedback on the preferred proposal. Read more information on www.nzta.govt.nz/projects/opawa-bridge-replacement and fill out the survey online.

Travis Moriarty of Marlborough Vintners Hotel says the Marlborough wedding show was better than one he attended in Wellington.

Wedding gown models Rachel Mason and Sophie Murphy.

Gowns & beauty Wedding show a hit once again Story and photos by Celeste Alexander Couples planning their weddings found plenty of inspiration at Sunday’s Marlborough Wedding Show. In the first hour of opening over 70 people went through the doors and from there on a steady stream continued throughout the day. Inside there was plenty for people to see and each of the exhibitors enjoyed meeting with couples to discuss wedding details. Co-organiser Carol Taylor says overall the show went well with plenty of people looking for things to finish off their weddings, while others made bookings for 2018.

“People seemed to really enjoy what was on offer and the exhibitors thought it was great as well. Unfortunately one or two exhibitors could not make it to the show, so we are very sorry for any disappointment, but otherwise it was a great day,” she says. Carol would like to thank the Marlborough Convention Centre for its support, all the exhibitors who took part and everyone who went along. The Child Cancer Foundation Marlborough Branch was the recipient of the door entry fee, raising nearly $1000.

Football news After a weekend of rain, football was cancelled last weekend in Marlborough to preserve the pitches and for health and safety reasons. Seniors are repeating last weekend’s fixtures, while some juniors are skipping a week, and some competitive juniors adding last week’s fixtures to the end of the round. Blenheim Valley Cobras sit out with a bye in the Men’s division 1 competition but player coach Mark Palmer is happy with the young team and says they are working on “getting the mental attitude right from the start” having had to come from behind to win games. Anthony Michaels and Matt Neil are impressing for them, while club mates United and Masters square off and Central Pirates have another tough challenge facing up to Central in another club stoush. I n t he 2nd d ivision Clubs of Marlborough Rangers have a chance to avenge their first round loss to Rangers Masters, while Trojans take on Picton No Names. Picton Crow Tavern take on Rangers United and the improving Redwood Masters will look to beat their club mates Renegades in the Floorpride Marlborough Mariners curtain raiser on A & P 1.

Big cash pool for Sport inbrief hunting contest

Moutere into semis

By Celeste Alexander Entries are flowing in for this weekend’s Woody Pig and Deer Hunt which roars off Friday. If you thought the prize pool was impressive last year, manager Rowan Ingpen says the cash prizes are bigger than ever. “Don’t miss out, make sure you get your entries in by tomorrow night, 8pm,” he says. The first cash spot prize of $500 has been donated by Winstanley Kerridge Chartered Accountants and can be won by anyone who has entered the Open Category, with or without catching anything. The Woodbourne Tavern has put up over $5000 in cash prizes that will be up for grabs plus there will be plenty of hunting clothing, knives and camping gear. Every cent that comes in with the entry fees will go back into the cash prize pool, as well as a community donation to the Renwick Volunteer Fire Brigade. Asked how entries are looking, Rowan says it’s great to see families coming back again for 2016. “It’s a great event for families. A lot of the kids are keen and brought mum and dad along to enter as well. “We have it so kids are free to enter and

they each receive a goodie bag,” he says. To give a better view of the animals entered, the Woody will have scaffolding set up for a larger display. Everything from boars, stags and goats, through to possums, rabbits and hares are expected. The hunt kicks off Friday and the weigh in event will begin Sunday at 1pm. Prize giving will later be held at 4pm sharp. The public is welcome to go on down to the Woodbourne Tavern which will also have bar and food specials on offer throughout the day.

Running for fun, helping others By Celeste Alexander Blenheim woman Tai Dixon enjoys running as a way to keep fit, but this year she decided to run the Saint Clair Vineyard Half Marathon for charity. Tai, a midwife at Wairau Hospital, spoke to friends, family and colleagues about her challenge and got support and sponsorship. “I entered the ‘hybrid’ category and was determined to run as much as I could. Then I thought, why not fundraise for SANDS as well. “At first I thought I wouldn’t raise very much but at the last minute I had a flood of donations come in and I managed to raise $433,” she says. Tai completed the half marathon in two hours, 13 minutes and 23 seconds, and she proudly ran the whole way. “Although I had to stop for the sauvignon sorbet...I wasn’t passing that up,” she laughs. “I was really pleased with how I did and even happier with the amount I raised, so a big

thank you to everyone who supported me.” SANDS is a parent-run, non-profit organisation supporting families who have experienced the death of a baby. All of the people involved in SANDS give their time and energy voluntarily, it does not receive government funding. SANDS Marlborough co-ordinator Sandra Remick-Sangster says the organisation plans to use the money to update their Stillborn Memory boxes, which are provided to Wairau Hospital for bereaved parents. “The funds will allow us to upgrade our Stillborn Memory boxes by making it possible for us to include things that may help bereaved parents prepare their items such as bath products, allowing them to bathe their child (children), inkless footprint kits, booties, a muslin wrap, photo frames and hand-creams for the mother. “The money will also go towards providing the hospital with Miscarriage Packs,” she says.

Spring Creek-based Moutere are into the semi-finals of the NPD Tasman Trophy this weekend. There were six teams fighting for the last two places in the final series, but a number of close games decided by a point meant Moutere came from eighth for secure the last semi-final spot, joining Wanderers, Nelson, and Marist clubs. Tasman Rugby Union chief executive Tony Lewis says any team is capable of securing the title of champions of Tasman. The semi-finals are played tonight at 7.30pm, with Moutere playing Wanderers at Brightwater and Marist playing Nelson at Trafalgar Park.

First Tasman All Black

Liam Squire is the first homegrown Tasman player to become an All Black. Squire is one of six new All Blacks named this week in the 2016 squad to play Wales in the June Test Series. He was selected to the Tasman Makos squad (Mako # 94) in 2011 and has played 38 matches and scored 10 tries. He has played Super Rugby for the Chiefs in 2014 & 2015 before moving to the Highlanders this season. He was a Maori All Black in 2013 and trained with the All Blacks in 2014 and 2015.

Roller skating club The Blenheim Roller Skating Club is inviting the public to go along to their ‘Disco’ event next Friday (June 3) at the skating rink on Stephenson Street, next to the hockey turf. If you already own skates, entry is only $2. If you would like to hire some of the club’s skates then entry is $5. For more information contact 027 765 3522.
