Danielle achieves rare coaching qualification Continued from page 1 Marlborough Riding for the Disabled head coach Roslein Wilkes presented Danielle with her certificate, in her role as national trainer for the New Zealand Riding for the Disabled organisation. Roslein says Danielle had worked hard for the organisation, starting when she was young. “This qualification takes a lot of work and there are only a few others in the country. “We are lucky in Marlborough to have more than one. Many organisations don’t have any fully qualified coaches.” Danielle says there are fewer than 15 fully qualified coaches in New Zealand. “I’m now a fully qualified Riding for the Disabled coach. I’m also a volunteer training course facilitator, selected by the national organisation to go around the country and hold training courses for volunteers. “I have also finished a coaches’ mentoring course. I have a certificate for that to mentor

other coaches.” She says she started working at the Marlborough organisation when she was 11, doing odd jobs in return for being able
to ride the horses. “At 18, I had no idea what I wanted to do, apart from wanting something with children or horses. I was humming and hawing, and came here to volunteer for a while so that I was doing something useful. “I was quite lucky, it all just fell into place. They were looking for another staff member and I started my training. “It took quite a few years but here we are.” Danielle says she achieved her assistant coach qualification early on, but the full qualification took a lot longer. It includes a university-level medical unit. “It takes a long time to complete.” She encourages people to consider working for the organisation, especially people who might like to volunteer, either with grooming the horses or in the office. “I love my job. It’s so rewarding. I get the best of both worlds, working with children and horses. I didn’t think I’d be able to find a job like that.”
Music helps children to learn By Cathie Bell There are many different ways of learning, and the Creative Music Trust is working to introduce music therapy throughout Marlborough. The trust is a non-profit organisation set up by Liz McKay early last year. Last week was Music Therapy Week, and Creative Kids Trust organised sessions at Whitney Street School and Marlborough Girls’ College to demonstrate the therapy’s use. Liz says the trust was set up to grow ‘wonderful children’ through the arts. “That’s our main goal, it’s for the children.” Support from the new health

alongside the music therapists. The Trust’s sessions help the children build fundamental skills and connections, Liz says. “We had a little girl last year who was fairly immobile. She is now able to stand on her own, singing ‘Baa Baa Black Sheep’ to her group on her own. “Another child has an amazing ear. She’s worked out the music by ear, and is able to communicate through the keyboard now with her family.” Trust administrator Sara Rogerson says there was a need in Marlborough. “Liz wanted to start with one foundation group, but began with three. We doubled sessions this year, and there are six
groups now.” The students range from zero to 18 years. Liz says she has a little babies group with mums, fostering the bonding between mothers and children, and bringing the families into the groups, along with the community to get wider support groups around the children. The Trust plans to expand from music into other arts. Liz say in the long-term they are interested in offering dance or writing as well. Sara says the Trust wants to grow and needs to find the funding for that. “Liz has done well out of grants to date, but we need to find more funding to keep up with growth.”

inbrief Marlborough on TV Two winners of Marlborough Environment Awards feature on TV this weekend, spreading the word about the innovation and good environmental practice at the heart of the Awards. MP to lead delegation to Norway salmon meeting Story and photo by Cathie Bell Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith is to lead a delegation to Norway to attend a conference on salmon farming. The National MP told a Marlborough Chamber of Commerce lunch that he has been asked by Aquaculture New Zealand to go on the trip. The conference, called Aqua Vision, runs in mid-June. Stuart leaves on Saturday next week. Also in the delegation are Marlborough District Council representatives and staff, fellow National Party MP Sarah Dowie from Invercargill, Environment Southland representatives, and the Southland District Council mayor Gary Tong and staff. The trip is being funded by Aquaculture New Zealand and
the Rogaland County Council, which is hosting the conference. Stuart says attending the conference is a “great opportunity for me” to learn more about the industry in Norway, the largest producer of farmed salmon in the world. Norway is an oil producer and earlier in the year when oil was selling for US$30 a barrel, they were making more from one salmon than from a barrel of oil. “I am very pleased to go over there and learn as much as possible. “I acknowledge there are some environmental concerns about farming salmon in the Sounds. I am looking to find out how they do things, I know there are new technologies. “They have some issues NZ
King Salmon don’t have here, such as sea lice and other diseases.” Councillor David Oddie who is going on behalf of the Marlborough District Council says the trip is a good opportunity to look at how another region operates marine farms, but also to build relationships with the industry and central government. The Marlborough Sounds was an important area with many interests, and the council needs to be engaged with all parties to ensure sustainable management of the region. “As a councillor, I want to be around the table, I don’t want that opportunity taken from us.” Aquaculture NZ chief executive Gary Hooper says the delegation of New Zealand politicians, coun-
cil officials and marine farmers is an information-gathering exercise to Norway as part of efforts to plan for sustainable salmon farming in this country. It is timed to coincide with the world’s pre-eminent salmon farming conference, AquaVision, which is held every two years. The delegation will learn from the experiences of their European counterparts on several aspects of salmon farming including, planning, environmental management, social licence as well as see the latest technical innovations. “It’s about learning the best practices and getting the best information to put us collectively in the best position to consider the opportunity of salmon farming in New Zealand.”

An IHC travelling exhibition that provides insight into the lives of people with an intellectual disability due to open to the public on Friday 10 June at the ASB Civic Theatre in Blenheim has been postponed, due to unforeseen circumstances and will now be opening in October. The exhibition uses photographs by Christchurch photographer Bridgit Anderson and video shot and edited by Auckland video maker Sam Morrison to explore how the lives of people with intellectual disability are not so different from others in the community.

Get staff by paying Businesses having difficulty finding staff should do what NZ King Salmon does, chief executive Grant Rosewarne says. “It’s a pretty simple strategy – we offer more money and people come.” NZKS employs 400 people across the top of the South Island, and the company does not find it impossible to find staff as many other top of the South industries seem to, he told a Marlborough Chamber of Commerce lunch this week.
Council’s high S&P rating The Marlborough District Council has been awarded an “AA Stable” long term credit rating from rating agency Standard and Poor’s. No local authority in New Zealand has a rating higher than Marlborough and it is only one step below the AA+ awarded to the New Zealand Government. In awarding this rating, Standard and Poor’s took into account the total debt of the whole Council Group, including MDC Holdings Ltd, Port Marlborough NZ Ltd and Marlborough Airport Ltd. It says the Council’s debt and liquidity policies are “very prudent as shown in its moderate level of debt and exceptional liquidity coverage”. The report also states Council’s governance and oversight of its trading organisation, Marlborough District Council Holdings Ltd and subsidiaries Port Marlborough NZ Ltd and Marlborough Airport Ltd, are strong.

Sounds Air looks at taking on Chch route By Cathie Bell Sounds Air will decide next week whether to take on the Blenheim to Christchurch route dropped by Air New Zealand, managing director Andrew Crawford says. Air NZ announced this week it would drop the loss-making route from July 31. Andrew says Sounds Air has just started investigating whether to start flying that route, and a decision is likely by the end of next week. Marlborough Chamber of Commerce general manager Stephen Gullery says Marlborough businesses need to be able to connect by air with the major centres and other regions of New Zealand in a quick and efficient manner. He’s pleased to receive an assurance from Air NZ management that the current traffic volume between Blenheim and Wellington as well as Auckland means these services are maintained. “The new schedule from Air NZ from October 30th onward introduces a later flight from Wellington to Blenheim to better meet

The management contract for the Havelock Mussel and Seafood Festival has been held by Marlborough 4 Fun for the past 12 years, but was re-tendered this year. “The committee looks forward to working with Go Marlborough as we further enhance and grow the festival to showcase the aquaculture industry and support the Havelock community.”

The Marlborough team earned the title of being the ‘second highest revenue earning Harcourts office’ for its size last year, while sales consultant Angela Bowers took out second place for the ‘most Mortgage Express referrals’. Around 1000 delegates attended the conference, with the dinner being held last Wednesday.

Annual resident satisfaction telephone survey Marlborough residents may get a phone call sometime this month and be asked to rate the performance of the Marlborough District Council. An independent research firm SIL Research is conducting our annual Resident Satisfaction Survey by calling 800 residents with a 15-20 minute survey about council activities. The Council uses the results to measure its performance in key service areas, like land transport, libraries, water supply, waste water and community
facilities. The results help Council to understand public priorities and to plan for the future. Calls will be made to residential telephone numbers during the day, in the evenings and at weekends to reach a cross-section of residents reflecting the demographic makeup of the Marlborough population. During the rest of the year the Council does not make a practice of contacting large numbers of residents by telephone.
If we need to advise you of services being turned off, we will put a letter in your mail box or make public announcements in your neighbourhood with a loudhailer. Change has no purpose When I think of Blenheim or Marlborough I definitely don’t associate that with city. Let’s be honest it’s a blink town when you compare it to an actual city. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Don’t get me wrong change is good...But it needs to have a purpose. What is this purpose? Think of all the small businesses that will have to change signage, business cards etc to accommodate the new change. Something to think about.

The great electricity scam! Does anyone check their electricity bills, how can a $80 bill - Yes $80, thats what the lines fee is - become $250? The power bill company rip off final fee charges for meter rental, meter reading, admin levies, network service, what does any of it mean except tripling your bill. Zoe organises cleanup Story and photo by Cathie Bell Last year’s beach clean-up was a success and twelve year-old Rarangi resident Zoe Luffman hopes that next weekend’s cleanup will be even ‘bigger and better’. The Tuamarina School pupil has timed the clean-up to be held just after World Oceans Day on June 8. The beach clean-up, from Monkey Bay through to the Diversion, will take place on Saturday, June 12, from 10am until about 1pm, she says. People are invited to meet and register at the Rarangi Community Hall. There will be a sausage sizzle and drinks provided afterwards.
She is passionate about conservation and the environment, being a member of Conservation Kids Club Picton. This organization helps to educate children on the environment, local wildlife and what we can do to protect it today and in the future. She has done beach clean-ups in Picton, around the Snout, and also with the Waikawa Dive Centre, and she was keen to bring the care closer to her home. “I go walking along the beach quite often, and I see a lot of rubbish unfortunately. “I wanted to do something about it.”

By Cathie Bell May 2016 was a month of two very distinct halves, according to weather data collected by Plant and Food Research scientist Rob Agnew. The data is collected at a weather station in the Grovetown Business Park. It shows the first half of May was very warm, similar to normal temperatures in late March or early April, Rob says. But the second half of May was cold, with the average temperature almost six degrees cooler than the first half. Sunshine hours were almost exactly the long term average for May, with 167.8 hours recorded, enough to keep Blenheim at the top of the sunniest place rankings, above rivals Nelson, Tekapo, and Whakatane. Rainfall for the month was 89.2mm, 141 per cent of the longterm average for May, and Rob says the soil moisture was being recharged with the above-average rainfall. “With the top soil fully wet, ex-

Stopping club root Continued from Friday May 27 The only known way to kill club root zoospores in infected soil is by steam and this is an unlikely option. There is no chemical treatment that I am aware of that will eradicate the disease. It prefers acid soil so by liming the soil heavily with soft garden lime gives it a hard time. In the past I have recommended using potassium permanganate (Condys crystals) as a soil drench to sterilize the soil in the planting area. This meant dissolving three quarters of a teaspoon of Condys crystals into a litre of water along with 3 table spoons of salt.
Once dissolved add to another 9 litres of water and apply one litre to each planting hole prior to planting. This appears to sterilize the soil giving the seedling a good chance to establish, grow and hopefully reach maturity before the disease chokes off growth. Planting quick maturing crops or planting crops after treating the soil in the early autumn can also work as the disease prefers a warm environment, not the cold soils of winter. The problem with using Condys crystals is that it also destroy beneficial microbes and fungi. Last week we talked about the new product Terracin which suppresses soil

About a month before planting your brassicas, drench the soil in the proposed planting area with Terracin as to the label instructions. Ensure that the soil area treated extends a metre or more beyond where you will later plant your seedlings. A good liming of the area would be advisable and keep the soil moist but do not use chlorinated water to do so. (It kills beneficial microbes). Three weeks later, apply Mycorrcin (or Thatch Busta) to increase the beneficial
microbe populations. About a week later, plant your seedlings. The goal will be to surround the roots of the plants with beneficial microbes and fungi so that the club root spores can not get on board. I would be interested to hear from other gardeners about their results. Planting any brassicas now other than the fast maturing Bok Choy is not practical. Cut out this information for later use and remember to lime, use only natural foods, no chlorinated water or other chemicals. America's love for Steven Adams Steven Adams is worth every penny of his new $20 million contract with the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder, according to American sporting pundits. I have been fortunate enough to be in Las Vegas for the series between the Thunder and defending champions Golden State Warriors and I can tell you the Americans rate the big Kiwi centre. Even NBA legend Charles Barkley, an imposing big man during his time in the 1980s and 1990s, says he would have loved to have played with Adams, who is the brother of double Olympic gold medalist Valerie Adams. The Americans love his physicality and presence under the hoop, as well as his uncompromising style and ability to get
under the skin of his competitors without being a dirty player. While the Thunder blew a 3-1 series lead to lose a chance to make the NBA finals by losing the last three games, Adams lost no admirers. The 22-year-old has made huge strides since he was selected 12th overall in the 2013 draft. Many expected him to be in the developmental D-league for a few years before seeing any NBA action but Adams has proven the doubters wrong. Not only is he OKC’s top centre, he’s performing like a quality NBA player and has the big money contract to prove it. Not bad for a boy from Rotorua. When he entered the league he was seen as a good defender who
needed to work on his shooting. He has done that, having had a few double-digit point games during the playoffs. He’s also been a pugnacious rebounder and general menace. Just ask Draymond Green who fouled Adams during the series by kicking him below the belt. Adams has the potential to play for more than a decade in the top basketball league in the world, injuries and form provided. The Americans can’t get enough of his Kiwi charm during interviews, his scraggy hair or dapper moustache. The OKC Thunder have become New Zealand’s team and New Zealand has another sports star who is legitimately turning heads for all the right reasons in America.

Dairying low will have ‘detrimental effect’ Depressed returns for dairy farmers will have a detrimental effect on the NZ economy larger than many wish to acknowledge yet, Marlborough Federated Farmers dairy section chairman told the organisation’s AGM recently held at Renwick. “The current dairying downturn is putting huge stress on farm and families alike and those in the primary support business. It’s hard for us, we can’t support them,” he says. His advice to dairy farmers was to focus on positives. Communication with one’s spouse was vital. “While I know it’s important we make it to all these meetings like this AGM, I understand the difficulties we are all having balancing time on farm/off farm/work life balance with less or no staff. So for what it’s worth don’t sweat the small stuff attend what you can, do what you can but please remember to look after yourself and your team and celebrate the positives no matter how small they are”. Ironically only a year or two ago, the world wanted more milk, Fonterra wanted more milk and farmers were striving to maximise milk output. Events were beyond farmers’ control said Evan White. All that can be done was to minimise the effects and communicate with spouse or partner and advisers. “Don’t waste time worrying about the things

you can’t control but rather concentrate on the things within your control and remember there are approximately 10,000 other dairy farmers in exactly the same boat as yourself. Beef schedules had remained buoyant with cull cows making up to $1000 in some cases. “This should have a positive effect on the bobby calf market.” Evan White says it was important to consider and keep up to date and include animal welfare especially the new rules around bobby calf handling and transportation. It was also important to attend to “Health and Safety” with safety assessments by Work-Safe currently taking place on farms. “On production, commendably the average hours worked per week now stands at 46. And dairy farmers had spent $1 billion protecting the environment by fencing off waterways, riparian planting, building bridges and upgrading effluent systems. A top effort.”
