Crossing concern By Julia Evans Mayfield School is so worried about pupils crossing State Highway One the school has made a submission to the Marlborough District Council asking for a safer alternative. Principal David Nott says the school is open to ‘any option to make it safe’ but thinks a road or track under the proposed new bridge is a better idea than the current road island. Mayfield School takes student safety to the Council Continued from page 1 The Marlborough District Council is hearing submissions on its draft annual plan this week, and Mayfield School has submitted the need for a safer way to cross Grove Road, which is also State Highway One. The school’s board of trustees, staff and parents all have grave concerns about the ‘lack of safety features on Grove Road’, their submission says. Apart from the island in the middle of the road, there is nothing, it says. The island is the place where students come and go from the school ‘whether they are walking or pushing a bike’. “For us it is all about the safety and well being of all our children and whanau.” The traffic island, David says, is the ‘obvious option’, but he does not feel it is safe enough for his pupils and is asking the council to invest in an alternative. “It’s a scary thought that pupils are trying to

navigate the road.” David says there are potentially serious problems as often older pupils walk younger pupils to school, especially if parents are sick, which is especially dangerous when crossing. While the school has no reports of close calls or injuries, the submission says pupils are seen playing dodgem with traffic from one side of the road to the other. The alternative means of crossing would not only be good for students of Mayfield School, David says it would be useful for students of close-by Blenheim School as well. In the past, the school has paid for a bus service to get students safely to school, but he says the $9000 price tag is no longer feasible. Submissions have been made to council before about safer ways to cross Grove Road, David says, but this is the first time the school has submitted. He says the submission to the council is just to get people thinking and talking about the issue and

any feedback is welcome. Waikawa Bay School in Picton has also submitted on road safety for pupils, asking the council to extend the footpath along Waikawa Road beyond the school to where parents often park their cars. The submission says the footpath ends at the boundary of the school but parents still park much further up the road, which is not flat and falls away to a bank less than a metre from the kerb. “The grass is often long and gorse grows in it as well. In winter the grass is wet and muddy and the kerb is often flowing with water. “This means students often have to walk on the road, around other parked cars, to their parent’s car to keep off the slippery bank. This area is also the only kerbside parking space near Waikawa Bay School that does not require crossing any road or driveway to get to, making it the safest parking area.” *Email us your thoughts at news@blenheimsun. co.nz

Locals scoop Bluff oyster challenge By Cathie Bell Blenheim residents Michelle Wilson and Daryl ‘Dagwood’ MacDonald are champion oyster eaters. Both were part of a group of friends who went to last month’s Bluff Oyster and Food Festival, and they ended up winning, with Michelle taking both the Overall and Ladies’ Winner titles while Daryl won the Men’s title. About 5300 people attended the festival, along with 20,000 succulent Bluff Oysters, complemented by plenty of other great seafood plus a selection of tasty offerings for those who were not seafood lovers. Michelle says she had eaten about two dozen oysters and Daryl about four dozen before they Champion oyster eaters Daryl ‘Dagwood’ MacDonald and started watching the oyster eating competition. Michelle Wilson show off their medals. There were several heats, and she says she

had been thinking she could do better than early competitors. Daryl was picked from the crowd because of the Minion toy he carries, and then Michelle was picked after she was holding the toy as well. The secret to winning an oyster eating contest is to swallow them whole, she says. “Sometimes they won’t get on the toothpick, you just have to go for it. Put them in your mouth and swallow, don’t chew.” She had to eat a dozen in her heat, and then straight away, competed in the finals where she ate another dozen. “We had big bellies full of oysters after that.” Michelle says she was ‘rapt’ to win, and the festival was a really good one. She intends to go again next year to defend her title.

Wither Hills open The controlled burn, at the Wither Hills Farm Park on the west-facing slopes near Grigg Drive off Taylor Pass Road, has now ended and the area has been cleared for public access, officials say. All walking and cycling tracks at the Farm Park are open again. Deputy Principal Rural Fire Officer John Foley requests that people stay off the burned over slopes.

Fluoride talk Professor Paul Connett, a toxicologist, environmental scientist and international fluoridation expert, is coming to Blenheim next month to discuss why New Zealand should become a fluoride free country, copying what he describes as a successful Scottish model. Marlborough water is not fluoridated, except at Woodbourne military base, but if the Government moves responsibility for fluoridation from council to district health boards, that could change. The NelsonMarlborough District Health Board “endorses communit y water fluoridation as an important public health measure”. Tickets are $5 and on sale at www. fluoridefree.org.nz or on the door.

Lawson's Dry Hills senior winemaker Marcus Wright and Roger Collett sampling some of the pinot noir being made for charity. Inset: Lawson’s Dry Hills senior winemaker Marcus Wright was more than happy to be involved in making the wine to be sold for Hospice Marlborough.

Charity drop hits the spot Story and photos by Celeste Alexander There were some delicious hints of berry fruit in the air as a very special pinot noir was sampled for the first time yesterday. Roger Collett of Collett Estate donated three rows of grapes to be made into wine that will be sold to benefit Hospice Marlborough. Lawson’s Dry Hills immediately gave their support. Roger met with senior winemaker Marcus Wright yesterday to sample the wine which is sitting in four barrels going through its gentle aging process. By the time the wine is ready to be bottled, Marcus estimates there will be

around 800 litres. Though the flavours are still expected to change throughout the fermentation process, Roger says he is excited about seeing his idea ‘come to life’. “This is only stage two, there’s still so much work to be done but it’s incredible to see it all coming together.” “Marcus and the team at Lawson’s have been outstanding in giving their support,” he says. According to Marcus getting involved was a ‘no brainer,’ the charitable wine idea was one he hadn’t been involved with before. “How can you say no to helping an organisa-

Roger has been growing grapes for Lawson’s Dry Hills for 22 years. Marcus says the winery is very much a ‘one-stop-shop’ where the wine can be bottled as well. Once the wine is ready, the next step will be having the labels printed and sourcing wine bottles.

Will and Rose Parsons, representing Friends of the Lower Opawa and Wairau, present a book to Kerri Battersby and Georgia Lee, from Marlborough Girls' College environment committee.

FLOW donates book Story and photo by Cathie Bell Friends of the Lower Opawa and Wairau Marlborough last week presented a book to Marlborough Girls’ College. FLOW spokesman Will Parsons says the book was presented to the college’s senior students in the college’s environment group, Georgia Lee and Kerri Battersby. Will says the group wants to form a relationship with local students, so they can be aware of the amazing environment there is so close and accessible in Marlborough. “We want to raise awareness of the species in the environment – some of the birds are quite close to being endangered.”

The book, “Vanishing Nature” by the Environmental Defence Society, was paid for from the proceeds of their wetland night walks last summer, Will says. It highlights how New Zealand’s natural heritage is at the centre of the country’s national identity, international brand, and future economic prosperity. “Yet despite its critical importance, the state of our species and ecosystems is deteriorating.”

By Cathie Bell Marlborough’s need for a new top-level hotel has been highlighted with the Government team working to attract international investors in tourism. Destination Marlborough general manager Tracy Johnston says she has contacted the Project Palace team. The Government last month launched “Project Palace” to speed up new private sector investment in hotels, saying 26 extra hotels will be needed over the next 10 years to meet expected demand in five main tourist centres. While the work initially focuses on Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland, Queenstown, and Rotorua, Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce has asked NZ Trade and Enterprise to catalogue and present hotel opportunities in other New Zealand centres as well. “The tourism industry is growing right across New Zealand and we don’t want

individual regions to miss out because investors lack knowledge of investment opportunities.” Several groups have approached the Marlborough District Council to explore building a 100-room plus, five star hotel in Blenheim, potentially on the Wynen Street carpark. Tracy says the conferencing sector in Marlborough could grow by having a hotel of larger scale. “We have a 700-seat theatre and a 560seat convention centre right next to each other. Our conferencing capability is greater than our ability to support it with four or five star accommodation. That is what the corporate conferencing market is seeking.” She says it is ‘fantastic’ Chateau Marlborough is extending to offer 80 rooms, and with that and the Scenic Circle, 134 rooms are available on the same block. “But with a 500-set convention centre and a 700-seat theatre, there is room for more.”

TB and 1080 Dear Ed, I was going to phone Percy Parker to congratulate him on his letter “More on TB” but could not find him in directory. Then I thought, I will write in and congratulate him. Well done Percy. Well said or should I say written. The TB once done by Animal Health Board and now done by OSPRI/TB FreeNZ is a gravy train funded by farmers and taxpayers. Actually farmers pay twice - through levies and then taxes. Percy Parker is quite correct. Below 0.2% is recognised internationally as free of TB. NZ has 0.04%. By my arithmetic (Standard 4 in my day) that is 1/50th of the standard. The bad side effect is wild animals are wrongly blamed and 1080 is dropped. To repeat 9800 possums were autopsied and not one had TB. The TB is spread because an inferior skin test is used and sick animals are not picked up. Why? “Ex-Cockie” Blenheim (abridged)

Colin King responds Dear Ed, In response to Mr Davies(letter to the ed, May 25), I would happily put up my credentials up against any of the other mayoral candidates. As local MP, I implemented the trades training policies into the National Curriculum and developed the vocational pathways for trades students within the National Certificate of Education, provided the Te Korowai along the Kaikoura coast with much needed direction and Ministerial support to a successful conclusion, and my signature is on all of the Treaty of Waitangi settlement documents

concluded with local Iwi. Three hospitals, numerous school classrooms, and essential State Highway 1 improvements were built, while Blenheim was the first town in the South Island to have fibre optic cable. What will I bring to the Marlborough Council as Mayor? A much improved relationship with central government, a unified well-led council, genuine honesty, integrity and most importantly, transparency – all factors that the good people of Marlborough are desperate for. Colin King Blenheim

Dear Ed, Has anyone travelled up to the North island and noticed bypasses being built and in the case of north of Wellington, an express way which in effect is a multiple bypass, by-passing several towns? Taupo has an impressive bypass, a boon to highway traffic and the township, with no traffic snarls through town. Mind you one doesn’t need to go north. The South Island has bypasses around towns. Why is Blenheim lagging? I read where a Blenheim truck firm wants the new bridge and not a bypass. That’s narrow parochial thinking. A bypass would save 20 minutes for highway travellers and heavily reduce traffic congestion at the bridge and along Grove Road and Main Streets. Don Coyote Blenheim

Yes, computers do slow down over time, this is quite natural and the good news is that it can be remedied. Just like a car computers need a certain amount of maintenance which if not done will lead to “slooow computer” syndrome. If you have recently had ultrafast broadband installed and things aren’t happening as fast as you think they should let us give your computer a good service and clean out, even if you are still on ordinary broadband your computer will thank you for it.

Hairdressing on the wild side Paul Kennett is back in Blenheim, bringing a London edge to hairdressing. He talks with Cathie Bell about hairdressing, life away, and being back in his home town. He has worked in the bright lights of Auckland, Australia and London, but now Paul Kennett has returned to his hometown Blenheim. A hairdresser for about 11 years, Paul has been back since August, working at Beyond the Fringe in Scott Street. “I swore I’d never come back but I’m actually enjoying it,” he says. “It’s nice to have a quiet life, than you can really appreciate it. Maybe I’m maturing.” Family concerns brought him back from London with both his mother and grandmother being unwell, but his visa was running out as well. “I was in London, furthering my career over there. My visa was running out as it does, it’s really painful to accept it. Just when you get grounded, you have to up end your life and come back. “My nana and mum were both unwell so home was where I was needed.” Working at Beyond the Fringe has helped him adjust to being back in Blenheim while he builds his client list up again. Colleague Burnetta Halswell works with makeup and styling, and her son Bejon Halswell is making a name for himself as a photographer. He worked with Paul on an edgy ‘industrial style’ photoshoot recently. “I was going to apply for hairdresser of

Blenheim hairdresser Paul Kennett in action, preparing a model for photographing.

the year, but I can’t as I haven’t been in the country long enough,” Paul says. “I was very disappointed when I found out halfway through that year. But there’s always next year.” Applying his creativity to styling hair and models for photoshoots has boosted his enthusiasm for the job. “It kept me going just that little bit longer, it keeps me busy in the quiet time.” The styling he uses in the photoshoots isn’t the sort of work he does every day in the Scott Street salon. “You might see that stuff in hairdressing magazines here, but you don’t see that form of fashion, that modern edge here. “You’ve got to cater for clients, their lifestyle, their appearance. Sometimes it’s a struggle, you have to guess. Some people

don’t give off a lot, you have to guess if they’re loud or quiet. “You don’t see them outside the salon, so you don’t quite know how to cater for them. “I might have pushed it too much when I first started back.” Marlborough clients are mainly ‘pretty casual’ in their look, Paul says, but that’s all good ‘as long as they’re presentatble and not in their pyjamas!’, he laughs. He loves being a hairdresser. “I love that it’s constantly changing, always changing, always creative. I’m like a sponge to anything creative. I can continue to learn and grow into my career. “There are so many aspects of it that branch off to other things.” He never planned on being a hairdresser and says he ‘sort of fell into it’.

$10 Valid until June

“I was a barista, all my family were in hospitality. It was easy. I moved to Auckland, a friend started a hairdressing course and they invited me along. I had a day off and went. “It looked like so much fun, I could do that with ease. I signed myself up.” That friend who got him into hairdressing is now working in sales and marketing. “Neither of us thought we’d be where we are…He finished his course but didn’t further it.” Paul says he seized the opportunity offered by hairdressing, and he still loves it today. “It is a very challenging job, but also really rewarding. When you make someone feel on top of the world, it’s best feeling ever. I have it on a daily basis.” “I have people thanking me for doing a piece of artwork so it’s win-win all round.”

Ally Broughton joins Gavin Lancaster in the paint booth while apprentice Justin Howard-Hodso has been taken under the wing of the panel beating team. “Justin has jumped in eagerly to learn the ropes, and our resident panel beater Ray Foote has taken him under his wing, affectionately earning the name Uncle Ray Ray,” Kelly laughs. “Plus we are fortunate to have Ally join us with his many years of experience in the industry, having owned his own vehicle painting business prior. We have a great team in place, much like a close knit family.” Another major change at Forbes Panel & Paint has been with the paint product used. “We have changed from solvent-based to water-based paint which is better for the environment and produces a smoother, better finish,” Shaun says. Forbes Panel & Paint has also updated other areas of the business including an overhaul of health and safety and the website. “We probably have one of the most comprehensive safety plans in Marlborough, and are even doing our own tag testing. “It’s all part of our commitment to ensuring the safety of our staff and to stay up-to-date with all the ever-changing requirements.

Ph 03 578 7074 36 Grove Road, Blenheim

“The website has also been updated and features a ‘project of the month’ that people might find interesting, and promotions that will change regularly,” Kelly says. Currently Forbes Panel & Paint is working on an old fire engine which is being converted into a mobile cafe. This is just another example of what the team can do. The next project in the wings is the construction of a large workshop space where Shaun plans to paint larger commercial vehicles. “We are seeing a lot of commercial vehicles coming to us so this workshop will allow the space to roll them in and out easily,” he says. Insurance work is also on the increase at Forbes Panel & Paint, as well as ‘cosmetic’ work in the under $1000 bracket. “Many people don’t want to claim insurance on the smaller jobs so we are seeing a lot of ‘touch ups’ coming through,” Shaun says. Whether it’s an insurance claim on a vehicle, the painting of alloy wheels or a touch up of a bumper, call in and see the team at Forbes Panel & Paint. “Your repairer is your choice!”

Hut moves by air By Cathie Bell A New Zealand Defence Force NH90 helicopter has shifted a 1700-kg Department of Conservation hut sitting on an active slip in Mount Richmond Forest Park in Marlborough to safer ground. Air Component Commander Air Commodore Darryn Webb said the NH90 helicopter, from the Royal New Zealand Air Force’s 3 Squadron, airlifted Mt Fell hut in its entirety about 300m to its new location last week. “No civilian helicopter can carry out the task in one lift due to the weight of the hut and the altitude of its location, which is over 1220m above sea level. The RNZAF NH90 is the only helicopter in New Zealand that can lift that much weight at that altitude,” he says. “This is another great example of how the NZDF assists our communities and other government agencies. The range of capabilities inherent in the NH90 enables it to perform a wide range of tasks, including airlifting heavy loads such as this.” NH90 captain Flight Lieutenant Chris Ross said the helicopter also transported two loads of concrete and other construction materials that weighed a total of 1800kg and piles of timber that were used for the hut’s new foundations. “We are pleased to have been able to

assist DOC and the local community by relocating the hut and flying DOC staff, volunteers and construction materials to the site,” Chris says. Built in 1964, Mt Fell hut is a six-bunk hut situated below an alpine meadow 1km south of Mt Fell summit. The ridgeline above the hut, which is a popular stop for people climbing Mt Fell, offers scenic views of the Wairau Plains, Nelson Bay, Tasman Bay, the Pelorus Valley and Wellington. DOC, which manages the hut, said it had to be moved because it was sitting on an active slip and was in danger of sliding into the mountain bush. The hut had been closed since March 2015. After the move, the hut will remain closed until Christmas. This will allow volunteers from the tramping clubs time to complete work on the foundations and gain Code Compliance Certification to ensure the hut is safe for accommodation once again. Matt Flynn, Supervisor, Recreation and Historic in DOC’s Wairau Renwick office, says it is great to work with the NZDF on projects such as this as we get to achieve more for conservation. “Staff from both organisations learn new skills and experience different ways of working.”

Tickets in hot demand By Celeste Alexander Tickets for the Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year show are proving to be hot sellers with more than half of the tickets already sold. Committee member Noeline Stewart says 110 tickets have already sold so if people want to secure seats for the show, they must get in fast. “They are in hot demand so to avoid disappointment you need to get to the Clubs of Marlborough before they sell out,” she says. Despite the tickets selling fast, brides can still enter into the show. “There’s still spaces for brides and the cut off isn’t until July 20. We have not placed a restriction on numbers so it’s just a matter of getting your entry forms before the cut off,” Noeline says.

If wearing your wedding gown is not temptation enough, the prize pool certainly would be. There is everything from beautiful jewellery, homewares and wine, through to vouchers for beauty, travel plus so much more. One of the main prizes alone is valued at $1500, a gorgeous piece of jewellery donated by Michael Hill. The entry fee for brides is $20 and of course, every bride will receive some lovely gifts as well as the winning category prizes. Entry forms for brides are available at the Sun office on High Street, Blenheim or by emailing bblbrideoftheyear@gmail.com. Tickets for the show cost $40 each and can be purchased at the Clubs of Marlborough via cash or cheque.

Next week, from June 15-22 Elder Abuse Awareness Week is being held while World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is held June 15. It’s a sad subject but one that is too important to ignore - elder abuse. Elder abuse is a serious issue in New Zealand and organisation Age Concern receives more than 2000 referrals of elder abuse every year. During this week Age Concern aims to raise the awareness of elder abuse and neglect and encourage the community to think about this issue and take action. Age Concern offers free, confidential, specialist elder abuse and neglect prevention

services, as well as providing education about elder abuse for those working with older people and other interested groups. One event in particular happening this month is a fundraising dinner being hosted by Age Concern Marlborough. The dinner is being held on Monday, June 13 at Bamboo Garden Restaurant at 6:30pm. Please join Age Concern Marlborough for an evening of laughter and fundraising. There will be auction items and a mystery bottle auction. Guest speaker for the evening will be Ian Cameron. Tickets cost $35 per person and all of the funds raised will stay in Marlborough to promote the wellbeing of older people. Numbers are limited so please contact Catherine or Pat on (03) 579 3457.

Family fun for all at expo By Celeste Alexander The Parent and Child Expo is just around the corner and what will be on offer this year promises to be a lot of fun for all. The expo will be held at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 on Sunday June 12 from 10am until 2:30pm. For children there will be several areas set up for their enjoyment. There will be a Bunnings DIY area with activities, a toddler area set up by the Blenheim Toy Library, bouncy castles and even a baby changing area provided by Marlborough Parent Centre sponsor ‘Huggies’. Throughout the day there will also be several demonstrations including dance, bicycles and fitness. Local lad Nick Best caught this impressive stag which weighed in at 102.5kg, bagging him the second prize place in the Deer section.

Emma Parnwell with the 37.45kg goat she shot on Sunday morning.

Hunters bag prizes at contest Story and photos by Celeste Alexander It’s been another very successful year for the organisers of the annual Woody Pig & Deer hunt. Sunday’s weigh in event saw a steady stream of vehicles arriving laden with pigs, goats and stags as hunters from near and far entered in the hope of bagging a prize. It was evident that the event is very much a family affair as children arrived with their fathers clutching their rabbits, hares and possums, and groups of siblings and relatives brought in their combined ‘catch’ of the day. This was pleasing to see, according to organisers.

“It’s great that families have turned out. There’s been quite a few teenagers arriving with what they’ve caught and the kids look really happy to be here,” Stacey Ingpen says. For 16-year-old Emma Parnwell, hunting has been something she has enjoyed with her family all her life. Emma shot a 37.45kg goat in the Waihopai area Sunday morning with a 223 rifle, while her brother Jackson managed to get a 93.50kg stag. In total there were 76 open entries, 24 teenagers and 46 children. There were 20 deer weighed in, 43 pigs and 20 goats and some fantastic results from the weigh in, Stacey says. More photos on page 14.

Lifeline needs more help Story and photo by Cathie Bell Lifeline Marlborough is putting out an urgent call on its own behalf. Branch manager Vienna Cassidy says she only has five volunteers at Lifeline Marlborough now, and she needs more. “We need more, we really do. I would like to have 10 extra people, if not more.” She says people can be ‘quite anxious’ about being on the phones with people in need, but she says there is training available, ‘really good training’, as well as supervision and support. “People get scared. It’s not just going in and teaching or digging pathways in the Sounds. You’re dealing with people’s most innermost thoughts. “You see the dark side sometimes. When it’s face-to-face, you see a bit of that, but often people are afraid to get that full-on with a person. If you’re on the phone, you’re anonymous.” Vienna says she really enjoys the work, starting as a volunteer 10 years ago. Anybody can do it, she says. “You need to be a good listener, have empathy, life experience and be non-judgemental... Sometimes you might challenge people, but you do it in a specific way so it’s helpful. “You gain skills, can take these communication skills into your family and work place.” People who are interested should register online at lifeline. org.nz and they will be contacted within a week, Vienna says.

Lifeline branch manager Vienna Cassidy needs more volunteers for the service.

A feast of gymnastics Story and photo by Cathie Bell A feast of gymnastics competitions will be happening in Stadium 2000 later this month. The gymnastics events start on Friday June 24 with a schools’ festival. More than 800 children are expected to participate from schools throughout the Marlborough District. That weekend, the Marlborough Gymnastic Championships will be held, with more than 400 competitors from throughout New Zealand, from Wellington, Kapiti, Hutt Valley, Christchurch, Timaru, Waimate, Greymouth, Hokitika, Nelson, Kaikoura and of course Marlborough. The host is the Blenheim Gymnastics Club which is one of a few fully volunteer clubs left in the country, club secretary Jenni Eatherley says. She says it will be great to have Marlborough’s own Anna Tempero back competing in Blenheim colours. “Anna is back to limited hours of training and will be competing in the Step 10 event.” Jenni says it is also the first of the qualifying events for those from Nelson, the West Coast and Marlborough vying for selection to the Top of the South Provincial team to Nationals which will be held in Invercargill later this year. “Our own Matt Palmer, who has retired from competitive gymnastics after competing at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and was a finalist in the rings event at those Games, will be coming down to judge at the event.” The Schools’ Festival and the Champion-

ships will be held at the Marlborough Lines Stadium in Kinross Street. For the Marlborough Gymnastic Championships, there is a small door entry charge to help offset expenses.

Paddon and Kennard fighting back in Sardinia

Jenni says the event will involve a considerable amount of organisation, and she thanks Blenheim Club volunteers and committee, as well as all those who provided support by way of sponsorship or advertising.

Blenheim Racing Pigeon Club held it’s classic race from Oamaru a distance of 470 km on Saturday, the last race of the young bird series for 2016. The race required a nominated team of two birds and it was a combined arrival time of each team to decide the outcome. The flock was released in perfect weather and the pigeons made very good times of a little over six hours on the wing. The winning team of Alister Cooper of Renwick made the speed of 75.6 km/ hr, second place to Two Fishers loft in Dillon’s Point doing 73.6 km/hr. Third position to Chris Bensley with 73.1 km/ hr then Carl and Cindy Kirkwood on 72 km/hr, followed by Nearo lofts with 71.6 km/hr and then Donald Morrison with 71.2 km/hr and equal with husband Donald was Shirley Morrison also with 71.2 km/hr.

New Zealand’s world rally stars Hayden Paddon and John Kennard say they are determined to come back fighting at this week’s FIA World Rally Championship rally on the Italian island of Sardinia. From the highs of their first-ever WRC win in Argentina, they suffered a tough blow in Portugal, after their car caught fire following an off-road excursion on the opening day. But they have put that drama behind them as they make their third start on the narrow, rocky roads of Sardinia, an event which marks their second anniversary with Hyundai Motorsport and their first WRC podium finish last year. The crew began work on a new i20 WRC car and impressively turned around the job in just seven working days. “The boys did an amazing job building the new car,” Paddon says. Hosted in the coastal resort town of Alghero in the north-west of Sardinia, Italy’s summer WRC round is a rough, rock-strewn gravel challenge that often favours a lower

road position. Ambient temperatures can top 30 degrees Celsius and cause strain on engines, tyres, components and crews as the cockpits reach 50-plus over a stage. Starting fourth on the road for Friday and Saturday’s long sets of special stages, Paddon says: “Rally Italia Sardegna is a very tricky rally due to its rough narrow roads and high temperatures…The key is to set a consistent pace from the start and try to stay out of trouble. Kennard says returning to Sardinia after last year’s podium means they both have a very positive feeling, despite Portugal. “Add to this, our very good pre-event test and our confidence levels have stayed high,” says Paddon’s Blenheim-based co-driver. “The biggest challenge in Sardinia is probably the heat – it’s always hot and sunny. On test we had 35°C, but luckily it looks like the rally maybe a bit cooler. The technical stages also mean there’s quite a bit of information in the notes to capture during reconnaissance and then convey to Hayden during the rally.”

BVU surge ahead in contest Blenheim Valley United extended command of the Marlborough senior men's division one football competition with Alex Connor-McClean and Hector Gustavo Cruz on target as they cruised to a 3 nil win over Blenheim Valley Masters. A & P Park hosted another great competitive game for Central Pirates who were reinforced with the return of key Marlborough Mariners, however they could only draw with Central 1-1 and “should have gone on to win it” lamented midfielder Gregg Slatter. It was a good performance too from Rangers City who had a gallant win over Woodbourne 6-2.

Blenheim Valley Cobras will be back in business next week having sat out with a bye. The 2nd division saw Clubs of Marlborough reverse the score line of their first round encounter against Rangers Masters, Clubs winning 3-1 in an entertaining game. That leaves them level on points making it a very competitive division. Picton No Names are not far from top either, helping that was their 3-0 win over Trojans. Redwood Renegades got among the goals beating Wadsco Trucks Redwood Masters 5-1 and Picton Crow tavern picked up a point drawing nil all against Rangers United.
