Call it a day

Story and photo by Celeste Alexander The Marlborough Branch of the New Zealand Korea Veterans Association has decided to close activities on July 28 and call it a day. This decision hasn’t come lightly but the inability to find members to fill management positions due to increasing age and health issues mean it’s now time, says founder Les Pye.

Korean War Vets wind up Continued from page 1 Les and Royd Woolf founded the Association 24 years ago following the Returned Services’ Association’s effort in attaining a plaque for the District War Memorial noting NZ’s military service in Korea, Malaya and Vietnam. Les was also the first elected secretary and has given service for four deceased presidents and the current president John Dodson, as well as serving as vice president for the past eight years.

He says one of the contributing reasons for the association’s closure was because he and wife Diana are leaving the region. Diana has served as treasurer for the past 15 years. “It’s been a long time in the appointment and I’m disappointed that it won’t be carried on, but it’s happening throughout the association due to the inability to get people to take on appointments. “There are other branches that are staying afloat on a

regional basis, but unfortunately for Marlborough it is the third to close,” he says. The Marlborough RSA has informed the branch that from, and including, July 27 they will keep alive the anniversary of the Armistice. The Marlborough RSA is also the benefactor of the closure in that when all matters have been completed, NZKVA branch funds will pass on for general welfare use. “It is hoped that the re-

maining 15 veterans, three associate and 10 honorary life widows can maintain a loose grouping for social occasions and support the MRSA in the perpetuation of the Armistice Agreement of July 27, 1953,” Les says. Each yea r the branch commemorates the Korean Armistice in honour of the 45 deaths of ‘K Force’ and RNZN personnel and has close liaison with both the Blenheim Korean Church and community.

Stats say region doing well - business lobby group chief executive Story and photo by Cathie Bell Marlborough is doing well as a region, Business NZ chief executive Kirk Hope says. The new chief executive, who took over from Phil O’Reilly earlier this year, spoke to a Marlborough Chamber of Commerce meeting last week. He says what particularly struck him during his brief visit was the development of the engineering sector in Marlborough. Marlborough enterprises were focused around resources, variety, and exports, he says, which positioned the region well. Tourism is another area which is a ‘really good story’, but the industry needed to capture more of the value from it, Kirk says. Meanwhile, the Marlborough, Nelson, and West Coast regions remain confident, a Westpac McDermott Miller Regional Economic Confidence survey says. The June survey, published yesterday, says regional economic confidence fell slightly in Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast, but still, a net 19.7 per cent of households believe the region’s economic fortunes will

Business NZ chief executive Kirk Hope in Blenheim.

improve over the coming year, making the region the third most upbeat out of eleven. A net 24.7 per cent thought the regional economy would improve over the next 12 months in the March survey.

“This is another good result for the Top of the South,” Westpac Chief Economist Dominick Stephens says. “The West Coast in particular will still be concerned about the low dairy payouts past and future, but the wider region has a lot of other drivers that are buoying confidence. The horticulture sector is strong, and forestry is holding up well. Low interest rates are stimulating growth in house prices, creating a sense of wealth.” An accompanying consumer confidence survey showed confidence at 101.2 in June, down from 101.5 in March. This placed the region seventh out of eleven, and was well below the national average of 106.0, Westpac says, a “very different outcome’ to the regional economic confidence result. “Residents clearly remain confident about their region’s outlook, but are apparently more downbeat about the future of the national economy,” Dominick says. “Households at the Top of the South seem particularly concerned about where the national economy may be in five years’ time.”

Everyone needs to stand up for kids: rally organiser Story and photo by Cathie Bell Only adults can fix the problems of child abuse and neglect, and people need to stand up to demand that those problems be tackled, the organiser of a rally near the Blenheim Courthouse on Monday says. Nikki Dinnimore says numbers for the rally, to be held at 9am on Monday in Seymour Square near the courthouse, are looking good. “We’re looking at more than 100 people, which is pretty good for a small town.” She says Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman will speak at the rally. The national effort is to coincide with the sentencing for the killers of three year-old Moko Rangitoheriri. The child, killed last year, is just one of many children killed or harmed by people who are supposed to look after them each year. The rally is part of what’s called New Zealand Stand Up, started by the Sensible Sentencing trust and picked up by groups around the country. Nikki says child abuse and neglect is a huge issue in New Zealand, and in Marlborough. “The stats are very bad…

People need to be held accountable for their actions the way they should be… Public awareness needs to be much more, people need to be aware it’s happening.” People also had to step up and get involved, she says, making calls to the authorities and talking to people if they think there is something going wrong. “It’s stepping in before it starts, getting these children before they’re in these situations.” The Government was not doing enough, with agencies underfunded and too stretched to deal with the scale of the problem, Nikki says. “We need to do more.” She says the response from Marlborough people has been amazing. “This is such a huge issue in our country. “In New Zealand we like to pride ourselves on being clean, green, tight as a unit, but we turn the other way on this. “It’s up to us as adults to address this for the children, they can’t do anything about it. They’re children. It’s up to us as adults to step in before it starts.”

inbrief IRD phone scam Scammers are targeting Marlburians by pretending to be from the government’s Inland Revenue Department. There are reports of the callers being aggressive and threatening and requesting callbacks. Police are urging people to first seek validation of who is calling, do not share your personal details and not to transfer money when threatened.

MP polling Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith is polling constituents on the idea of a Blenheim bypass, saying recent public consultation on the new Grove Road Bridge has reignited debate. “This is an issue that is clearly important to the community,” he says and a survey is included in his latest newsletter to be delivered to every household in Marlborough.

Theatre shift Work has started stripping the old theatre in Arthur Street to make the building ready to house more health and community organisations as the health hub expands. The theatre booking office and other staff have moved to the new ASB Civic Theatre building in Alfred Street.

New premises working well Story and photo by Cathie Bell Noel Templeton Optometrists’ staff are loving their new premises in George Street. Office manager Helen Nicholson says the move from High Street has definitely worked out for the company. Almost three months into the change, there are no regrets about the move and staff are enjoying the renovated, light premises and the sun that pours in. “We’re on the right side of the street – it’s so much warmer and more comfortable.” The space works well for the business, with larger examination rooms, Helen says. “It’s really good.” Business owner Noel Templeton told a Marlborough Chamber of Commerce Business After 5 event that the house has been returned to almost exactly as it was in 1945. “Except the porch would have been open then.” He says all but one internal wall in the house remained the same, and the house could not have been designed better.

Noel Templeton speaks to a Marlborough Chamber of Commerce event at his new premises.

About 50 people attended the chamber event at Noel Templeton Optometrists on Wednesday night.

Rare opportunity to map Marlborough Sounds seabed The council is going to partner with Land Information New Zealand to map more than 43,000 hectares of seabed including the navigational high-risk area at the entrances to Queen Charlotte Sound and Tory Channel, extending all the way to Picton. The project will get underway in October with the data expected to be available by mid-2018.

Council’s coastal scientist Dr Steve Urlich says the multi-beam mapping will produce accurate seabed maps which will help build understanding of the effect of current and future economic and recreational activities; they will provide biodiversity habitat data and become a baseline for future monitoring. It will also provide critical information for cruise ships and bulk carriers, which

will assist Port Marlborough. “When the work is finished it will be invaluable for the community; we will have some of the best quality underwater information in the country.” • An Open Day for the public will be held in Picton to showcase the project with the vessel that will be conducting the seabed survey – dates to be announced.

Keep cutting down the waste

The Council carry bags are being sold through local schools as part of the push toward greater waste reduction across Marlborough. Schools have been offered the bags as a fundraiser and are selling them for $4 each; $2 to cover the cost of production with a small profit for the schools. Any school wanting bags to sell may contact Council solid waste manager Alec McNeil, phone 03 520 7400. It’s part of the ‘reduce and recycle’ message promoted by Council to cut down on the rubbish we all generate so we can ease the pressure on the landfill. We’re working together to reduce waste.

The Sun Congratulations messages Congratulatory messages from Stuart Smith for locals on their special birthdays or wedding anniversaries? Are you serious? Would anyone really care for one of these?

Housing Crisis The reason Marlborough is facing a housing crisis is due to the greed of the wine industry. By continuing to accommodate this industry itinerant workers are being favoured over desperate locals who are being forced to live in cars. Where are our priorities?

Tragic

Stop texting Workers at Battys Road corner complaining re drivers using cell phones man - that’s a laugh some of the stop go workers are texting etc. most of the time I see them. Yes, we do need a bmx track but at Taylor River, Monro St end. There is already a half pie one there. Come on Mr Mayor the kids need it and at the same time don’t forget about all the up grades on the softball park they need before summer. BMX track is a fantastic idea, I know my kids would love it. Back in the day we had heaps of fun with the old one, down Taylor Pass.

P value 500 million wow! Drifts should give up, then they could buy those expensive homes in Auckland instead of living in their cars. It just shows where all their benefits get spent.

Build homes Wine industry struggling with accommodation problems? Why don’t they put their staff in the beautiful homes on the land that they buy instead of just bowling them over to make way for their precious vines? They seem to cause their own problems then suddenly they make it everyone else’s problem!

Dogs soon to have warm paws cated kitchen space. What were the two old lion’ dens back when SPCA was a zoo, have now been converted into warm and comfortable lodgings for mother dogs and puppies. Project co-ordinator Phil Lawrence says the facility is a “quantum leap in conditions for both dogs and staff”. The project has attracted support from many local businesses with some donating time and materials. Most generous have been Nomolos Architects, Fulton Hogan, Hirepool, Expol, Kiwi Insulation, The Davidson Group, NMIT joinery department, Mainland Homes and Heating Supplies, Christchurch who donated and installed the under floor heating.

All suppliers have “come to the party” Phil says, offering big discounts. “Thanks go out to ITM , Allied Concrete, Morgan Plumbing, Sun Shine Solar, Total Electrix, Zorite and Rob Blick Construction and a special mention to Bruce Baldwin from ABQS Ltd, the Project Manager and Health and Safety advisor.” Funding per m itting, the new kennels will be completed in the next few weeks. The next stage once the kennels are completed is to demolish the old kennels, Phil says. “We are looking into how much it will cost to knock it all down as we currently don’t have the funding to do this. If anyone could help us with this we would very much appreciate it.”

Phil Lawrence, the project co-ordinator for SPCA Marlborough’s ‘Project Warm Paws’ in the new indoor dog kennels facility that is nearly completed.

Friends and family of Blenheim man Ron Knight, better known as Joe, gathered at his home on Wednesday to celebrate his 90th birthday. Joe was born near the London docks in 1926. He went on to join the Merchant Navy in 1944 and served during World War II. After the war he and wife Mary moved to New Zealand and settled in Blenheim and have remained here since. Project ‘Warm Paws’, the publicly-funded project started over a year ago and is about a month from completion. What meal do you never get sick of eating? Mum’s beef roast with Yorkshire Puddings! One of my best holidays was... Going to Hanmer with my family as a child in the summer. My guilty TV pleasure is...

Outlander! Although I’m not sure I feel guilty about it.

I’m inspired by...

My Mum and Dad and the faith and courage they have had while facing Dad’s cancer. How do you want to be remembered? By my love for my family.

Who would you love to have a meal with?

My whole family (Mum, Dad, six sisters, one brother plus all our children).

Q A Q A Q A

What’s your fondest childhood memory? Going to Picton foreshore and having fish and chips on Sunday with my family. What is the one thing Sun readers would be surprised to know about you? I married my high school sweetheart at age 19 and we have two lovely boys aged six and one. What’s next on your wishlist? A puppy (hint hint hubby).

Trust benefits from local support By Glenise Dreaver Volunteer Gary Boyd (pictured) at work on the new sheep yards at the Papatuanuku Independency Trust farmlet in Waikawa. The trust supports at least seven intellectually handicapped residents at any one time, creating for them a “home for life” on the five hectare property. They were in desperate need of better stock yards to handle the small flock of sheep they run to help make their venture selfsupporting. When businessman Eric Collins was approached for support, his response was immediate. He not only donated posts and rails, he wrote out a cheque for $1000 for the rest of the materials and Gary stepped up to build the yard. “We’re incredibly grateful to Eric and Gary for this support,” said the home’s manager Sam Quinn. A weedy problem tackled There are two types of plants in our gardens and lawns, the ones we want and the ones we do not want. Usually the ones we do not want we call weeds and as the saying goes; 'one man's rubbish is another man's treasure' which can also apply to weeds. I say this because I have a friend who specializes in many plants most would call weeds. See http://www.juliasedibleweeds. com Not only does Julia cultivate numerous weeds, she teaches people to do the flavour imparted. Equipment call Wairau Hospital is calling for people with unused physiotherapy and occupational therapy equipment to return them to the hospital. Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy Team Leader in Wairau, Nicola Westend says the Allied Health team are asking clients to return loan equipment which is no longer required to ensure there is enough in stock for future patients. There is a high demand for equipment which is usually required short term for a range of people who have had an accident or following surgery, she says. “We are struggling to match the right equipment to patients due to low stocks. “Coming in to winter we tend to have a higher demand,

therefore we are keen to get back any items that are no longer required by our clients,” she says. Nicola says the equipment they are particularly keen to see returned are crutches, shower stools, bath boards and bedside commodes. However the return of all items no longer required is appreciated. Please return equipment to the equipment store at Wairau hospital’s campus, next to the Southern entrance to the hospital via the service entrance off Taylor Pass Road. Phone 03 520 9927. If it’s difficult for people to get to a drop-off point please contact us on the numbers above. For more information refer to nmdhb.govt.nz/ equipment-return.

Get the right advice Whether you’re a first home buyer or upgrading to a new home, building a home, looking to complete home renovations, or simply trying to save money and reduce your mortgage costs, it is important to get the right advice. Recent changes within the financial industry, with the introduction of the Financial

Advisers Act 2008 have resulted in increased disclosure requirement and professional standards. Three important steps in locating the best adviser for you: 1. Talk to friends and family - get recommendations on who they ‘trust’. The best form of recommendation is word of mouth.

2. Use the ‘net’. Use the internet to locate the best person for you. 3. Ask for their Disclosure Statements. These will inform you if they are Registered Financial Advisers (RFA) or Authorised Financial Advisers (AFA). Talk to Mortgage Room - Authorised and Registered Financial Advisers.

Top tips for people looking to apply for a mortgage • Manage your bank accounts well, lenders look at these. • Pay existing loans and credit cards on time. This shows lenders your commitment to repay. • Pay loans and credit cards off if possible. This means you can borrow more for your house • If you’re unsure of your credit score, go to www. veda.co.nz and order a report. • If you’re not buying right now, consider putting up your Kiwisaver contribution if you are thinking

of using this for your deposit. • Consider using a Mortgage Adviser. They are

independent experts who work solely for you, and they don’t cost you money!

Review finances often It can feel good being a home sweet homeowner. But, and there is ‘the but’, there is that loan. However big or small the mortgage, there are steps to minimise and trim it down. Check things like level of repayments and interest rate every year or two, or when: • A fixed rate loan is about to expire • The interest rate on a floating rate mortgage changes • There’s a big life change on the horizon • A big lump sum such as an inheritance It helps to take a moment and ask, are these mortgage payments still as big as I can

comfortably afford? Check the budget to see if there’s spare money to put toward extra repayments. Even boosting repayments by $25 a week may save thousands of dollars interest, becoming mortgage-free earlier. Sometimes, changing the structure of the mortgage by switching some or all from a floating rate to a fixed rate can save money, or by changing lenders. Before changing, look carefully at the costs and possible savings. Talk to a financial specialist or your lender if you want to review your mortgage.

Foley Family Wines, the Waihopai Valley-based company majority owned by American billionaire Bill Foley, has brought forward the final payment to its grape growers for its 2016 vintage, reflecting the strength of its balance sheet. The wine company says it will pay growers the final instalment in May instead of July as it benefits from a 31 percent increase in the 2016 grape harvest to a record 6954 tonnes, with its Marlborough harvest lifting 42 per cent. “Growers are integral to the success of our business and this year we wanted them to share in the results we are achieving,” chief executive Mark Turnbull says. “The amount brought forward is approximately $2.3 million, so we are sure that our growers will have appreciated the payment a few months early”. Foley Family Wines is in the last month of its 2016 financial year which ends June 30. In its first half, profit jumped to $1.6 million from $400,000 a year earlier as sales rose 12 percent to $17.4 million. Chief Group Wine maker and Head of Viticulture Alastair Maling MW says that combined with a strong growing season, it is exciting to see that the company is now reaping the benefit from improved viticulture practices across all of its vineyards. “A disciplined approach and a focus on all stages of the growing season contributed to the increased tonnage and also delivering high quality across all varieties”. The company has further expanded its senior leadership team with the appointment of Blair Robinson as Australasian Sales and Marketing Director. Blair is currently Market Manager New Zealand and Asia for the highly regarded Villa Maria Estate and, prior to this, Blair worked in various sales roles at Coca Cola. Blair starts 1 July 2016.

Warriors win NBA battle, lose war at the end

It’s fair to say the Golden State Warriors will feel like that impatient girlfriend waiting for a proposal from a clueless boyfriend. For all of their time, effort and sacrifice in 2016, it doesn’t mean a thing if you haven’t got that ring. A history making best 73 wins and nine losses evaporated into obscurity after they failed to win the title on Monday, losing a seven game finals series to the Cleveland

Cavaliers. It’s the first professional sports title for Cleveland since the 1960s. The city is a proud sporting hub but its sports fans have been subjected to choke acts and bad luck for half a century. That was until Monday. Golden State Warriors were the best NBA team in history - now, not so much. How can you be when you don’t win the championship? Instead those championship

rings go to Cleveland, a team who timed their run to perfection to beat the perfect team. The best team goes back, in my opinion to the 1995/96 Chicago Bulls. They lost one more regular season game than the Warriors but ultimately won the championship. Sport is about winning battles but ultimately wars. The Golden State Warriors won 73 battles but lost the war they needed to win most.

Blue Duck dip

Conditions for the Blue Duck nude swim at Lake Rotoiti last weekend were per fect, Marlborough participants say, as they were calm, dry, relatively warm and “no eels under the jetty”. Eight naked people went in, mostly men, and they say the ‘after swim glow’ was the best part. “It was a great day to celebrate life and the solstice!”

MBC rugby fundraiser

Youngsters boxing ahead New boxing classes in Blenheim are bringing out a lot of talent, especially from young people, trainer Peter Warren says. A recent arrival in Blenheim, Peter competed at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane as a bantamweight fighter and has fought international title holders during his 19-year professional boxing career. He hadn’t planned on getting back into boxing, he says, but his son Kayden was interested and Peter organised classes at Marcelo’s Gym in Stuart Street for Kayden and some of his friends. That has grown, and now about 14 boys and girls join classes between 4pm and 5pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the gym. Classes for adults have become so full, he’s run out of gloves for them, Peter says. While many come for fitness, he says there is enough talent in town that he’s planning to put together a squad to compete next year. “We’ve only been going nine weeks, and we have a Kaikoura boxing group coming through for a training session with adults.”

A selection of special wines dating back 20 years from Marlborough and abroad are up for grabs at a fundraising auction next week to support the Marlborough Boys’ College rugby club and its First XV, Second XV, and division two players. The auction is on Tuesday June 28 at Wither Hills Winery from 7pm, with a $5 registration fee payable at the door.

Rugby club competition

In the Motorworld Marlborough Div 1 competition Renwick tipped over competition front runners Central, in a thrilling 25 – 23 upset. Waitohi held out Harlequins 22 – 14 while Moutere were too strong for East Coast winning by 38 - 17.
