Heartfelt thanks

Story and photo by Cathie Bell Jasmine Baker has just completed a Spirit of New Zealand course, thanks to the Marlborough Royal New Zealand Navy Association. She was meant to do it last year, but the trip was delayed after a required medical check found a hole in her heart and she needed urgent surgery. Continued on page 2 Jasmine Baker who won a Spirit of New Zealand scholarship from the Royal New Zealand Navy Association with Marlborough president Barry Rolton and coordinator Jeremy Hall.

TWICE WEEKLY

Teen completes sailing after heart repair Continued from page 1 Jazz as she prefers to be called was studying at Queen Charlotte College last year when she was selected for the Spirit of New Zealand course. She had a pre-voyage medical check as part of the process and that was when the hole in her heart was found. Jazz went to Auckland for urgent keyhole surgery but the hole was too large to fix that way, and a week later, she was able to have the open surgery. Then, there was 12 weeks of bed rest to recover, which she says was ‘a pretty boring time’ but the looking forward to being able to do the course later was something positive. “Thankfully they had the funding and I still got to go on the course… It was really nice to have that there to look forward to and to have

something to be thankful about. “I’m so grateful for the trip. Without it, I wouldn’t have found out about the heart and got it fixed. I would have just gone downhill without knowing.” Now fully recovered and studying outdoor education on the West Coast, Jazz completed her voyage last week, and was still buzzing when The Sun caught up with her. “We circumnavigated Great Barrier Island, they don’t often get to do that, it was quite special.” Her favourite part of the voyage was the early morning cold water swims. “So many on my voyage didn’t want to get up out of bed, they didn’t want to do the swims, but I couldn’t wait to get up and do it.” The Marlborough Royal New Zealand Navy Association’s scholarship is a good thing, Jazz says,

bringing with it the funding to do the course. She encourages other school students to consider applying for the scholarship. “I hope to inspire others to have a go, it’s really worthwhile.” Jeremy Hall coordinates the scholarship programme for the Marlborough Royal New Zealand Navy Association, and Barry is the Marlborough branch president. Barry says the association tries to offer the scholarship each year, and it is promoted through churches and the three colleges during the year before the August 1 deadline for applications. Selection is held in late August, timed with the association’s annual meeting. They say the association tries to select people ‘who could do with Jazz Baker, up the rigging of the Spirit of New Zealand. Photo provided. the challenge’.

Rally gathers 160 to reject child abuse Story and photo by Cathie Bell About 160 people gathered in Seymour Square on Monday as part of a nation-wide protest against child abuse and neglect. Organised by Blenheim woman Nikki Dinnimore, the rally was to protest the manslaughter convictions of the people who killed three year-old Moko Rangitoheriri and to encourage people to act against those who abuse or neglect children. “We need to stand up and address this issue.” Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman spoke to the protesters, thanking them for making

a stand. “Throughout the country today, people are protesting. I say protest, because this is what it is – a protest for Moko, a protest about what is happening right across our country.” The solutions don’t rely solely on the agencies, he says, but on a community responsibility. “We want to see an end to these terrible events…It’s all our responsibility. “We can’t change the past, but we can all change the future. It’s not OK to hurt our kids. Get up, extend a hand, make a phone call, talk to the schools, talks to the agencies, but above all,

speak up. One person can make a difference.” People circled the fountain,

holding a minute’s silence for Moko, and then the names of children killed by those who

were supposed to be looking after them were read out.

Theatre funding crunch Story and photo by Cathie Bell The Marlborough District Council has already chosen to support the theatre trust, Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman says, the issue is now what shape that support will take. He vows any loan repayments will not come from rates ‘as long as I’m mayor’. Councillors decide tomorrow whether to pay off the ASB Civic Theatre Trust’s $5m debts in a meeting to bail the trust out and make it economically viable. Already, the battlelines are drawn, with the The Blenheim Residents and Ratepayers Association saying the council must seize ownership of the new theatre building and control of the trust in return for the funds and former mayor Gerald Hope saying there is no alternative to paying the debts off. Three options are to be put to councillors – the status quo, which would see the building unfinished and the trust calling on the council’s loans guarantee; paying the trust’s $5m loans from the ASB Bank and Rata Foundation and keeping the operating grant at $200,000 a year; or paying back the trust’s $5m loans and increasing the operating grant to $390,000 a year. In return, the council will review the trust’s finances again and its chief financial officer will attend trust meetings. Alistair says the theatre is at ‘the point of no return’ and whatever decision is made, there will be costs for the council. The council needs to work on ways to make sure that it costs ratepayers as little as possible, he says, including the sale of council’s commercial property in Blenheim and special dividends from the fully-owned port com-

pany and airport. “We are not proposing to fund this from rates. It won’t come out of rates as long as I’m mayor.” It is time to put aside politics and to focus on the issues, treating the theatre as other organisations are, and ensuring its future for Marlborough, Alistair says. “We bought Lansdowne Park for $4.5m and there was hardly a murmur…We have a different attitude in this town between sport and culture.” He has backed the theatre project because ‘if the mayor doesn’t back social infrastructure projects, they don’t happen’, he says. That was how the Giesen Centre in Renwick, the aquatic centre at the stadium, and Endeavour Park Pavilion in Picton were built. The Blenheim Residents and Ratepayers Association has started an online petition calling on the council to take control of the theatre project. Association spokesman Corey

Mayor Alistair Sowman looks at The Blenheim Sun of May 2011 when a survey showed large public support for the theatre.

Hebberd says the theatre is not economically or financially viable without further council support. “Without a doubt, this project has the potential to unlock incredible potential for the Marlborough region, but enough is enough. “It is time for Council to take over the project, take ownership of the building and complete the work so the region can capitalize on the value of the project.” Former Mayor and council chairman Gerald Hope supports council clearing the debt of $5m

By Cathie Bell People have ‘obviously done quite a bit of thinking’ about how to manage fisheries in the Marlborough Sounds, a government official says. Blenheim people had a chance to have their say and learn more about the snapper and scallop fisheries when the Ministry for Primary Industries held a public meeting last week. Ministry inshore fisheries team leader Allen Frazer says there was a steady stream of people attending the consultation meeting on Thursday. It had a ‘pretty good’ turnout, he says. “It was an opportunity for people to ask questions and share what they know, and people have obviously done quite a bit of thinking before they’ve come. They had

questions for us.” Allen says the ministry was keen to hear from people about which options they supported and why, so officials can understand the thinking behind that support. Holding the consultation meetings with information available and people to talk with gave people the chance to have their questions answered before they write their submissions, he says “It’s working well, this approach.” Allen says it is a busy time for Marlborough Sounds fisheries – scallops, snapper, paua fishery management are all being reviewed right now. “It’s quite a busy area.” There is a short time left for submissions – the scallop review finishes on Friday.

By Cathie Bell A group of Renwick women get together once a month to knit blankets for charity and they are looking for more knitters and others to help out. Coordinator Joycie Bird says the Renwick group is part of a 16 year-old organisation Operation Coverup, and it knits and provides blankets for needy families in Eastern Europe who did not enjoy the luxury of adequate or warm coverings on their beds at night. She had been part of a group in Christch-

urch and when she moved to Renwick, formed a group there to continue the work. Joycie says the group meets every month on a Friday afternoon in a member’s home to ‘knit, catch up on any new developments and enjoy a cuppa while the needles flash’. The group is always looking for new members, and is happy to accept donations of wool or unwanted hand-knitted items. “We can undo these and re-knit.” Pam Price, one of the regular knitters, says it is a ‘very useful’ thing the group is doing. “It keeps the children nice and warm.”

Blenheim Toyota 2015 Hilux SR 2.8TDi 2WD DCab Auto Developers and the greenies face off in the production which starts tonight.

Show with message Review by Cathie Bell Tonight will be the nerve-wracking premiere of the combined colleges’ junior production, Stop the Chop, and the young cast have been practising hard out. At Monday’s technical rehearsal, the students of Marlborough Boys’ and Marlborough Girls’ Colleges ran through the tale of a group of students taking on dodgy developers and corrupt council officials trying to bulldoze a forest of native bush for a housing subdivision. Tied into that is a love story about two sole parents. It even has a guest appearance by

Marlborough Boys’ College principal Wayne Hegarty at the Boomtown High School talent quest. The cast tackle the show with enthusiasm, and the two-hour show passes quickly with some well-known musical numbers, dramatic musical score, and scenic background photos. Of special note is the humorous performance by Jed Washer, who makes minor character Mr Ellwood memorable. • Stop the Chop, combined colleges’ junior production runs from tonight to July 2 at the Blenheim Musical Theatre, 81A Lakings Road. Tickets available from the schools.

Rangitane celebrate Matariki on cold dawn Story and photo by Keelan Walker About 40 Rangitane members braved the cold weather to gather at the Wairau Bar last weekend to catch a glimpse of Matariki. Although there was a thin layer of cloud that threatened to disappoint the group, at 6.17 am the constellation slowly emerged in the early morning sky. A traditional Matariki karanga and karakia welcomed in the new year, followed by a short talk from Judith MacDonald about the traditional history of several prominent landmarks in the area, such as Kapara Te Hau (Lake Grassmere) and Parawhiti-O-Nui (White Bluffs). Matariki appears toward the north-eastern sky sometime around the shortest day of the year, and is thought to determine how successful the harvest crop will be in the coming season. It is said that the brighter the stars appear,

the more productive the following year’s crop will be. Maori also recognise it as a time to acknowledge both new life and those that have passed away. Rangitane chairwoman Tarina MacDonald said the experience was magnificent. “I’d really like to see it become an annual fixture and hope that next year we open it up and invite not just other iwi but the whole community,” she said. The event was organised by the iwi’s Hunting and Gathering Portfolio who provide a series of events throughout the year, most of them aimed toward promoting whakawhanaungatanga (process of establishing relationships) amongst Rangitane whanau and iwi members. Event organiser Richard Andrell said that the event proved to be more popular than they had anticipated.

Sun readers have their say... with the WORD on the Street. Q: Should open fires be banned in Blenheim to improve air quality?

Alison Dight Blenheim

Gemma Bartlett Blenheim

Matt Flynn Blenheim

Max George Blenheim

Peter Cairns Blenheim

I love an open fire but it affects my asthma. So I am on the fence with this one.

No, as the cost to upgrade is too hard on already struggling families. Perhaps monitoring firewood sales to ensure dry wood is being sold is a better idea?

Tough one as the environment really is suffering from carbon emissions. Maybe if the cost of heating and adequate insulation was reduced folks might find it easier to swallow?

No, wood smoke is natural and non toxic, cigarettes are proven to kill yet they’re legal. It would be a big price to pay for a few still winter nights!

Air quality is important. Open fires are about 25% efficient, replacing it with a new insert fire into the old cavity will increase it to at least 65% efficiency.

Housing crisis

Warm weather

Dear Ed, Vineyard housing crisis, really? Thought it was strange that those creating the problems are calling for government and council to solve them. There was a time here where biodiversity was practiced throughout the district, where Marlborough was self-sufficient for food and jobs and housing year round. Planting up every square meter of arable land for grapes has created the very crisis they speak of. Projecting crop increases with a short 3-4 month harvest period is irresponsible community diversity planning. More houses and RSE workers is not the problem. Crop planning, diversity and rotation is! Just look over to Nelson to the diverse range of crops grown with longer and countering harvest periods, providing all-round seasonal work (JOBS). The wine industry has put Marlborough on the map developing a global reputation for quality, but going forward we need to focus on boutique, not brandless 25000L flexy containers shipped to the bulk wine market. Basham Blenheim

Dear Ed, There are times I wonder if this global warming thing is happening - it’s been so warm, the plants in my garden are thoroughly confused. I have daffodils, jonquils, and other bulbs shooting and flowering, and the white daphne is almost in full bloom already. The solstice has only just been and surely there is a lot more cold, gloomy winter to come, but according to my garden, it’s actually spring already. The cherry trees down Middle Renwick Road have only just lost their leaves and they’re now blossoming already. It makes me worry about what next year’s fruit harvest is going to be like. Greenfingers

Petty ticket Dear Ed, Wow, I got a parking ticket on Monday for exceeding two hours parking on a meter. I had topped it up to last until I finished work at 12.30pm. I thought the two hours maximum parking meant that was the amount of time you had on the meter NOT that you had to move your car after two hours. Very petty I think when there is empty parks all along the street. Surely it is better to have a meter with money in it than not being used at all. My tyre was chalked while I was getting money to put in the meter at 9.15am. Very efficient meter man, chalked my tyre one other day before I even turned my car off. Want more people to shop in town wow! Upset Volunteer

New goals for artist

Joanna Upperton with her latest painting ‘Ferg’.

From a very young age Joanna Upperton has possessed a natural artistic ability. At the age of six she won a national art competition and now aged 32 she operates as a professional artist. Joanna talks to reporter Celeste Alexander about her journey and her plans now that she is based in Marlborough.

Born in Kawakawa and later raised in the Bay of Islands, Joanna says as a child she initially thought she wanted to be a farmer and an artist. Art was something that came to her naturally, something she enjoyed and took every opportunity through school to pursue. Joanna recalls the moment she realised her art could be profitable. “I did a show in sixth form for our end of year exhibition. The teachers weren’t impressed that I didn’t follow instructions for my artwork, so I was blown away when I went to the show and found that every one of my pieces had sold. “It was then I thought maybe it was a good direction for me,” she says. At the age of 18 Joanna travelled to Europe where she worked as a nanny for a family in Switzerland. She was working long hours so in the evenings in her down

time she would paint. One year in she decided it wasn’t something she wanted to continue with, so she held an exhibition in the village she was in and sold her art to pay for her ticket to fly home. Once home Joanna opened her first gallery in Kerikeri. She was only 19. On the opening night she was surprised to find that 85 percent of her art had sold, so with some gentle persuasion her clients agreed to leave the art hanging while she painted more. Five years later Joanna was accepted into Warrick Henderson’s gallery, a fine art dealer based in Auckland. Warrick described Joanna as being “someone to watch as New Zealand’s post millennium contemporary artist”. “Unpredictable in content subject with painstaking attention to detail...” he wrote. She painted for the gallery for around

two years while living on Waiheke Island, but then a recession hit and she also found herself losing direction. “I wasn’t loving the big investment gallery concept as I felt I had lost contact with my clients. I felt like half of me was missing, so I decided to go back to marketing myself,” she says. Looking for a new challenge Joanna took some time out and worked as a tour guide. In her travels she met her partner Chris, a Blenheim man, and decided to settle in Marlborough and get back into her painting. “I’m looking forward to being settled and establishing a good name in Marlborough. “It’s exciting and I’m glad to be back at it,” she says. The next stage for Joanna is to look at the option of opening a small gallery in Blenheim and Queenstown, as well as selling prints for the first time.

Weddings - Corporate Events - Special Occassions - Or just because....

Conference, Event or Function

Attract new customers To grow your business you need to attract new customers to your business. A way to increase your exposure to potential customers, and to reward your existing customers, consider hosting an event. Events can range from a large-scale charity gala, to small-scale targeted events like an open mic night for writers at your coffee shop or having Father Christmas come to your retail store during the holiday season. Appeal to your target customer. When deciding what type of event to host, think about the lifestyle, interests and daily challenges of your customer base. Spend time on logistics. Do you need to bring in more chairs for eating or watching a performance? If appropriate, be sure to decorate your business with tasteful and festive decorations that fit the theme of the event. Provide excellent service. During the event, make sure that you provide excellent customer service and effectively showcase your products or services. Gather contact information and follow up. One of the keys to turning a large event turnout into increased business is to gather contact information and keep in touch with

the attendees afterwards. You can add them to your newsletter or call them to personally invite them to an upcoming sale. Measure the business impact of the event. To get feedback, talk to customers during the event.

Fundraising? Have fun planning your event The Marlborough community is very supportive of fundraising events and a number of them are held at various times throughout the year. One important thing that makes a fundraising event successful is its entertainment value. Here are some key things to consider when planning your next fundraising event. Pick the right venue. Your guests should be treated to a wonderful venue. Consider the time of day you are hosting your event. Have good catering options available so

your guests don’t go hungry. A bad meal could ruin their experience. When sending out invitations Consider handwritten or designed, printed invitations. Emails can be lost or disregarded. Keep speeches from being too long. Include some humour. Offer ways to donate. Hold live and silent auctions, hold raffles and fun competitions. Provide entertainment. Background music or live bands can break up the time and fill dead space. Guest speakers can also create excitement.

ABOVE: A group from the New Zealand Archaelogists’ Association are shown around the Wairau Bar site by Rangitane members last week.

Unique site a hit with archaeologists By Cathie Bell The hosting of the New Zealand Archaelogists’ Association national conference at the Rangitane Ukaipo in Grovetown went well, Rangitane business development manager Richard Bradley says. A highlight of the conference was a tour of the unique Wairau Bar site by the 130 conference goers on Friday. Richard says the iwi aimed to bridge some gaps between iwi and archaelogists by hosting the conference. Since the repatriation of ancestral remains in 2009, and the continued excavation and science carried out on material from the site, a lot more was known about the iwi’s ancestors and many of the gaps have been bridged, he says. There were a large number of people interested in the Wairau Bar/Pokohiwi site, where New Zealand’s first settlement happened 800 years ago. Richard says he was impressed by the number of young people at the conference. “If we’ve done anything for the next generation of archaelogists, we shared with them our hopes and aspirations for the future. I think that’s what’s in it for us.” Conference attendee Dan Witter says the site was ‘a truly glorious place’. Particularly interested in toolmaking, he says the site was where the technology and knowledge of toolmaking from eastern Polynesia underwent a transformation using New Zealand material, the argillite from Nelson and the obsidian from the North Island.

“The earliest stuff you have is here…It makes it a special experience.” Marlborough Museum director Steve Austin says it was wonderful for archaelogists to be on the site and benefit from the insights of the local people. “It’s often hard to convey that side in a conference centre. Particularly for the younger archaeologists, the whole experience of today can have quite an impact in terms of understanding the material culture compared to living culture, understanding that value that work can bring.”

New owner, big plans Hotel d’Urville and Restaurant is going through exciting changes. Apart from the extension of the restaurant, bar and outside dining area that are planned for later this year, some changes have been put in place already. Owner Kevin Bourke has brought in a new team, revamped the dinner menu and developed a separate dessert menu. Only the finest locally sourced ingredients are used for the eclectic and delicious dishes. Furthermore, there is a wine list featuring wines from New Zealand and around the world to match the dinner and dessert menus. What makes Hotel d’Urville and Restaurant unique is its central location, making it the ideal destination to enjoy pre-theatre dinners or even after-theatre desserts. Kevin says the team is able to create tailormade packages for small conferences. “We have a conference room/private dining room available for up to 30 people. At Hotel d’Urville we are extremely competitive with other providers and we offer an exceptionally high standard of service and facilities.” The small boutique hotel has eleven stylish and comfortable rooms each with its own unique theme.

Quilters to pour into town for SewMarlborough Story and photo by Cathie Bell More than 250 people will be pouring into Blenheim in less than three weeks’ time to pore over quilts, material, and other fabric art essentials. SewMarlborough is a ‘mini symposium’ being hosted by Marlborough Quilters for four days from July 14. Sponsored by Bernina, represented in Marlborough by the Sewing Store, the conference will have exhibitions and a ‘merchant’s mall’ of special fabric and other goodies. Fifty sewing machines are available for use during the event, donated by Bernina. Organiser Clare Crosswell says mini symposiums are gatherings of quilters from around New Zealand held every two years, with national-level tutors attending to hold classes. National symposiums have internationallevel tutors, and the next one of those is next

year in Christchurch. This mini symposium has 260 people registered, from all over New Zealand as well as a few from Australia. Organiser Sharyn Simpson says they thought if they got 250 registrations, they would be doing well. “We got it.” Organiser and guest exhibitor Jean McLean says the mini symposiums are great events, highly social and ‘not intimidating’. Members of the public should feel free to register for classes, she says, with a few places left in some classes. There will also be lots of exhibits, with three challenges on at SewMarlborough. These are the SewMarlborough challenge “Vintage”, with the only requirement a ‘smidgeon’ of purple in the quilt; the Hoffman challenge, which are all irregular shapes; and the Aotearoa Quilters’ challenge

By Cathie Bell Friday was national St John Day and Blenheim St John staff went with ambulances and apples provided by Marlborough New World to have morning tea at Riverlands School. Marlborough St John area executive officer Anne Parker says St John Day this year celebrates the organisation’s connection to local communities and is a chance for St John to ‘give back’ for the valued support provided by the community. This year, Blenheim St John decided to focus on schools and to draw the name of a local school from a hat to visit and celebrate all that is good and kind, she says. Riverlands School was the winner of the draw and an ambulance visited the school where local members of the St John

team gave out apples – kindly donated by Blenheim New World - to the students and a ‘goodies bag’ of balloons and stickers to teachers to share with their classes. The team arrived at Riverlands School at 10.20am on Friday and about 200 children ‘descended on us’. “The apples went down a treat, with even the teachers queuing up for one. We gave the apples from the back of an Ambulance, lights going, the kids loved it.” Anne says the students were able to look through the ambulance and ambulance officers answered their many questions on equipment and the service. St John wishes to say a big thank you for the generosity of Blenheim New World, she says.

Hospice marathon done By Cathie Bell It was a gruesome race, but Bohally Intermediate teacher Phillip Johnson managed to complete his marathon run to raise money for the Marlborough Hospice. Phillip signed up to run the Christchurch marathon during Queen’s Birthday weekend last month, to complete a New Year’s resolution, and used the event to raise money for the hospice, in recognition of the work it has done with some family friends. Official race records show he came in at 4:57:51, ranking 153rd in the men’s 20 to 39 years category. Phillip says he got a really bad stomach bug during the last week before the race.

“I didn’t eat for five days prior.” However, he made it to the start line ‘undernourished but keen to go’, he says. “I got halfway when the cramp kicked in, but I gutsed it out, finishing just under five hours… It was tough going and I was totally spent at the end. “If I wasn’t running for charity I wouldn’t have done it.” Two weekends later, after getting his appetite back and feeling 100 per cent again, he entered the Monaco Marathon in Nelson. “I shaved off 25 minutes and finished really strongly – they were very contrasting races.” He managed to raise $1300 for the hospice.

Racing cancelled

Rain was the only winner on the second day of the Marlborough Harness Racing Club’s meeting which was abandoned due to surface flooding on the track. Sunday’s first race was set to go at 11.45am but the meeting was canned shortly before 11am due to track conditions. The possibility of racing on Monday was investigated by the club and the RIU but the costs would have been high and there was no guarantee conditions would have been fit for racing. There is no replacement date.

Former All Blacks winger Zac Guildford has left the New South Wales’ Waratahs, cutting short his Super Rugby season.
