Inspiring the young

Story and photo by Cathie Bell Believing you can, writing down your goals, and working to achieve them is all part of the inspirational message being delivered to young people this week as part of the Sir Peter Blake Trust’s leadership week. Fiona Fenwick was part of the trust’s efforts in Auckland and now the new resident is looking to inspire Marlborough school students this week as the trust expands its activities. Continued on page 2 Fiona Fenwick, wearing Sir Peter Blake “lucky red socks” on her hands, is speaking to Marlborough schools this week about Sir Peter’s vision.

Believe you can and red socks Continued from page 1 Sir Peter Blake is probably New Zealand’s most successful yachtsman, winning every significant bluewater race during his 30-year career, including winning and successfully defending the America’s Cup. Knighted for his achievements and accorded celebrity status in many parts of the world, Sir Peter turned away from competitive sailing to pursue a passion to help safeguard the environment that he had enjoyed so much. His mission was to show people how beautiful and unique the world is and to inspire them to preserve and protect it. Sir Peter was murdered while defending his vessel and crew against river pirates in the mouth of the Amazon in December 2001. The trust formed in his memory has since 2007 promoted a leadership week to celebrate great leadership. This year, it runs from last Friday to

this Friday. The theme for Leadership Week 2016 is #believeyoucan, the trust says. “We want to encourage all Kiwis to back themselves to achieve your dreams, don’t let failures stand in the way of achieving success, and instead, learn from mistakes and use them to adapt and strengthen your plan towards achieving your goals, just as Sir Peter Blake did.” Part of the leadership week activities involves people speaking to school students about leadership, success, failure, and goals in their lives. Fiona Fenwick, a communications advisor and international professional speaker on reputation management, moved to Marlborough last year. Previously from Auckland, she had been involved with the leadership week activities and has been asked to take part again this year. But rather than speak to Auckland schools, she asked to speak to Marlborough ones.

“I believe it’s the first time schools in Marlborough have been involved in the Sir Peter Blake Trust ‘Dream Team school visits for Leadership Week.” She speaks to Renwick School students today, and Marlborough Girls’ College students tomorrow. Her husband, Martin Fenwick, spoke to Marlborough Boys’ College students last Friday. “It’s a great programme.” Fiona says she enjoys speaking to young people and hearing from them their ‘unfiltered’ views about their goals. “For me, it’s about making it real. Not lecturing, but standing in front of a group and seeing the lights get switched on.” She would like to encourage more Marlborough schools to take up the opportunity to have speakers next year. “I’ve always been concerned it’s a bit citycentric.”

Fire panic not needed just yet By Cathie Bell People shouldn’t panic about their fireplaces just yet, despite council moves to improve air quality, a Marlborough heating company says. The Marlborough District Council has proposed banning open fires and woodburners older than 15 years from the Blenheim airshed which covers the Blenheim township as part of measures to improve the air quality. The Blenheim airshed has breached national standards four times in the past year, and this is thought to be part of health problems suffered by some people. Doug Powell of Marlborough Fire Installations says he has already received lots of calls from panicked people thinking the changes have already come into force. He says people don’t need to panic just yet. The plan is out for public consultation and people have until September 1 to have

their say. After that, the council will hold public hearings, and then decisions will be made about any changes. It could be 18 months before new rules come into force, he says. “I’ve had a lot of worried people ring and come in, who I’ve put straight.” Clean air standards have been introduced in Nelson and Christchurch, Doug says, and he expects they will be here too. However, the majority of fires ‘these days’ meet those standards, he says. “Older than 15 years, none of those would comply, to be perfectly honest.” That is made worse by people who burn coal or wood that is not dry. Doug says while the installation of new open fires or multi-fuel burners has been banned, the council hasn’t ‘gone around ripping them out’ and so people are still burning coal. The lack of dry wood in winter also caused air quality problems.

Doug Powell from Marlborough Fire Installations is urging people not to panic about their fires.

Olympian pledges to visit if BMX track built By Celeste Alexander It’s official... New Zealand’s first BMX Olympian Sarah Walker has said that if a track facility is built in Marlborough, she would love to be here for the opening. Sarah was contacted last week by Anna Simpson, the mother of school boy Axell SimpsonAllan who is rallying community support for a BMX track. Sarah spoke to the Sun on Monday saying how excited she is to hear that members of the Marlborough community are rallying for a BMX track. “For me, it’s exciting to see more and more communities around NZ becoming excited by the sport. It’s an Olympic discipline now so to open more tracks is to open these types of opportunities to more areas. “If Marlborough had a track then more kids could get involved, and even if they are not aiming for an Olympic level, it’s still getting them outdoors, having fun and sharing it with their families,” she says. Sarah first began riding BMX when she was 10, but she says, it’s a sport that can be enjoyed by all ages. “It’s a massive family sport that gets everyone involved. “The other bonus is that if Marlborough does open a track then people would travel from all over to visit the region, especially if race meets were held. “I would most certainly do my best to organise a date so I can come to Marlborough for a track opening,” she says. Sarah is one of a number of well known people who are

Executive officer and New Zealand BMX rider Dion Earnest has spoken to Anna and sent her information to get her going in the right direction. Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman has also spoken publically of his support for Axell. Axell met with Alistair recently to ask if MDC would consider building a BMX track and discussed where a possible track might go. Alistair encouraged Axell and Anna to get more community support for their proposal. Currently there is a month long survey being carried out online which Anna says she hopes to get 2000 or more responses to.

Having Problems with Your Dentures?

Rating well Story and photo by Cathie Bell Marlborough Sounds eco-village and campground Mistletoe Bay has received a silver Enviro award from Qualmark. New chairman Jon Cunliffe announced the rating at the Mistletoe Bay Trust’s annual meeting last weekend. Jon says the trust has had a successful year and Qualmark reconfirming the facility as a Qualmark 4 StarPlus operation is a significant achievement. “We have also re-entered the Enviro Qualmark scheme under the new assessment criteria and have been awarded the Qualmark Enviro Silver rating.

“This is very pleasing but we still have some work to do to achieve Gold. “And that is where we are headed.” He thanked the eco-village and campground’s managers Casey and Sharon Livingston for their part in making the facility a good place to visit. Jon has taken over as Mistletoe Bay Trust chairman from foundation chairman Simon Heath. Mistletoe Bay’s primary focus is to give students on school camps a ‘hands on’ introduction to the principles of sustainability and conservation within a coastal ecosystem. To keep the costs of attending school camps affordable, it also offers commercial accommodation.

By Cathie Bell June weather data shows last month was warmer and wetter, but Blenheim is still in drought conditions. Data from the Blenheim Meteorological station located at the Grovetown Park campus of the Marlborough Research Centre has Blenheim on track to continue its boast as New Zealand’s sunniest place with sunshine hours about average. Plant and Food Research scientist Rob Agnew says the

July 25th

total sunshine for the first six months of this year is 1323.1 hours, which is 107 hours higher than the long-term average. “Three of the first six months of 2016 have recorded well above average sunshine hours. January and April 2016 recorded lower than average, with June now showing average sunshine hours.” While the first week of June was cold, the average temperatures for the rest of the month

were above average. Nine ground frosts were recorded in the first half of the month and only one in the second half of the month Rainfall was above average too, and Rob says May and June both recording well above long term average rainfall helped Marlborough to recover from the summer drought. Total rainfall for the 12 months July 2015 to June 2016 was 488.3 mm, which is only 76 per cent of the long-term

average, he says. “This is the twelfth lowest total on record for the 87 year long term average period, from 1930 to 2015.” Last year, the 12 month rainfall total from July 2014 to June 2015 of 347.4 mm was the lowest on record over the 86 years 1930-2015, Rob says. It was 54 per cent of the long-term average rainfall of 642.9 mm “Blenheim has now experienced two years in a row with well below average rainfall.”

it creates a lot of industry here, but also the other parts of the dinner, the clams, the fruit, the vegetables, the wine as well. “I’m taking the top of the South to Wellington.” His salmon course is a smokecured salmon dish, with different textures of his favourite vegetable Jerusalem artichokes including chips and pickled with mandarin vinegar, and a black garlic dressing. It will be served with Dog Point chardonnay. Tonight’s dinner also includes food by David Griffiths from Napier’s Mr D Dining and Rex Morgan from the Boulcott Street Bistro in Wellington. David Griffiths is cooking Ora King salmon with Japanese flavours while Rex Morgan’s dish is tea tree infused, Korengo seasoned Ora King.

Logan Brown’s Shaun Clouston says it will be an absolute pleasure to host this Ora King Salmon dinner. “It’s also a privilege to share the kitchen with David, Brad and Rex, who respectively, are not only some of the country’s best chefs, but also mentors, colleagues and great friends of mine.” Tonight’s dinner is the first of the ‘Joining Forces - Ora King Chef Collaboration Series’ dinners with further events planned in Christchurch and Auckland later in the year. The concept is to showcase fine New Zealand dining in leading local restaurants. Joining Forces aims to highlight what can be achieved by combining fresh local produce with equally hot local talent.

Intersection gets go-ahead By Cathie Bell The New Zealand Transport Agency has confirmed it will spend $2.9 million putting in a roundabout at the Spring Creek intersection of State Highway One. The agency says it has allocated the funding to give what it describes as ‘one of the South Island’s highest risk intersections’ a major safety overhaul. The confirmation of funding means work to improve the intersection of State Highway 1, State Highway 62 and Ferry Road at

Spring Creek in Marlborough can start, with construction expected to begin late next month. Included in the intersection design is a new roundabout; traffic islands on all approaches, a layby on the southern approach to the roundabout so heavy vehicles turning right into Ferry Road can wait safely when a train is approaching; rail crossing barrier arms for Ferry Road traffic, and a dedicated turning lane left into Ferry Road, as well as new footpaths and cycle facilities, landscaping and new signs.

Marlborough Roads Highway Manager Frank Porter says the intersection has a history of crashes and a combination of new infrastructure and improved layout will make it safer. “In the past 10 years, 32 people have been involved in crashes at the intersection, and nearly 90 percent of these crashes happened while the driver was turning at the intersection. “State Highway 1 and State Highway 62 are both important routes for travel to and from the Marlborough region.

Heavy vehicle operators also rely on these routes to move freight to and from the ferry at Picton. The improved intersection will also increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists. “We’re looking forward to getting started on this major improvement, and making journeys through the region safer and more efficient,” Frank says. Construction is expected to be substantially complete before the busy summer holiday season.

Theatre questions Dear Ed, I have seen some interesting letters on the new theatre, its cost explosion, its poor location causing dangerous traffic conflicts between theatre patrons and road traffic and so on. They all make sense. Council were undoubtedly advised on the costs, the guarantees and that everything was okay. The questions are not a reflection on the theatre itself. The questions are as someone wrote on”

Sally Davis Blenheim Sleeping in until lunch, having lunch at a Marlborough vineyard shortly followed by wine sampling/drinking and laughing over old stories.

the lack of process and lack of accountability”. But it wasn’t okay. Councillors should have asked questions and could have voted against it, not do we need a new theatre, but on the location, the traffic flow and planning questions. It appears only about four had the gumption to query things. But the real underlying question is who of council management gave the poor advice? Percy Parker

Dear Ed, Well, this announcement by Council re the Theatre funding was quite something. It is so bad that the usual whitewash attempts by our Municipal Fathers’ spin doctors have not covered up this mess. It is not a Council project we are told. It is a Theatre Trust one. Council only pays for most of it (directly or indirectly) or has already paid for eg. associated projects like the car park building (empty except during Theatre performances). It is essential for Council to take over the handling of this project from the Trust immediately. The Trust’s poor performance is widely known to the people of Marlborough and their arrogance is well documented in the newspapers. Very often incompetence and arrogance go hand in hand. Kurt A. Trixl (abridged)

Sun Business Update

A decade in business It’s been an eventful past decade for local man Craig Noble, but it’s also cause for celebration after being in business for 10 years. Craig owns and operates Riverside Refinishers, located on Park Terrace. It was where Craig did his spraypainting apprenticeship under previous owner Steve Beaumont, so when the opportunity arose to take over he jumped at it. It’s an industry Craig has worked in for 20 years, and to this day he says he still “loves to paint”. “I get excited when something comes in I haven’t painted before. “I’m proud to still be here, I love what I do and seeing something completed is very satisfying,” he says. Riverside Refinishers has built its reputation on being able to paint and resurface almost anything to a high standard of workmanship. According to Craig he and his team “paint things from six foot under to sky high”. “From funeral caskets to aircraft and everything in between. We paint furniture, cast iron baths, vehicles, appliances, joinery and kitchens.

For all spraypainting requirements • Insurance Work Cars - Buses • Motorhomes and Campers • Aeroplanes and Aircraft • Boats and Marine • Furniture • Appliances i.e. Fridges, Dishwashers • Joinery and Kitchens (Old and New) • Full or Part Restoration • Fibreglassing And much more........ “Care in our work, pride in our operation, and customers come first”

“We also carry out full or part restoration and fibreglassing. I’ve had a classic car come to me in 1000 pieces which I rebuilt and restored,” he says. Much of the work that comes in is from word of mouth Craig says, so he wishes to thank his customers for supporting him over the decade. “Without your support I wouldn’t be here so thank you.”

Life through the lens Bejon Haswell is taking his photography in different directions, he tells Cathie Bell. Shooting fashion photography for Beyond the Fringe, a Marlborough chain of hairdressing salons, has seen a young Blenheim man qualify as a finalist for photos he took for Beyond the Fringe’s entry in the L’Oreal New Zealand Hair Dresser of the Year – New Talent Section. Another collection, above, has just featured in the latest IMAGES Hair and Beauty Magazine with a four page layout. It’s the third collection that Bejon has had published for Beyond The Fringe Bejon shoots a mixture of fashion and mountainbiking photography, having worked in the United States for Spoke magazine. He says the variety of the work is what he likes about photography and the new experiences he gets with each job. He did photography at Marlborough Boys’ College and got an excellence award for it. He left school two years ago and hopes to do photography fulltime in the future and ‘make a living from it’. As part of that, he’s off to the United States again in October to photograph the Red Bull Rampage again in Utah.

He’ll be photographing the event for Spoke magazine. Bejon says he will keep doing the fashion photography for Beyond the Fringe and its staff, as he is used to the work, having watched his mother Burnetta work on fashion shoots as a child. She was a makeup artist and stylist with Servilles Auckland and now Beyond the Fringe. “I’ve always been into photography, since I was about seven. “I’ve kind of always been around it with Mum doing hair fashion stuff when I was a kid. It’s something I grew up with.” This access fuelled his eye and passion for photography. “Fashion photography is something I quite enjoy… It’s a bit different. “Hairdresser Paul Kennet is cool to work with. He has all these cool ideas.” Mountainbiking and skating photography is what he has a passion for, but Bejon plans to keep a focus on the fashion shoots as well, given his family involvement and the opportunity to showcase his ability though competitions such as the L’Oreal contest.

Trainee beekeepers at Taylor Pass Honey Michael Giles (left) and Jayden Paul encourage others to join them.

New career ‘a buzz’ Story and photo by Cathie Bell New careers as apprentice beekeepers has given Michael Giles and Jayden Paul a whole new appreciation of honey. In fact, Michael has got so interested, he now has a hive at home and is planting nectarbearing plants that flower at different times of the year to ensure the bees have enough food. Taylor Pass Honey Company is growing, and taking on more staff. The company is keen to take on more apprentices, looking for people who like working outside and are fit enough to lift hive boxes full of honey. Full training is given. Michael was a qualified mechanic before deciding he wanted something new and changing careers. “It’s a massive change, but I love it, it’s awesome.” The range of work really appeals – working outside in the field in all the places hives are kept, learning about the business and about bees themselves. Jayden says the work involves much more than he thought. “I didn’t realise how much goes into honey production. They are busy wee critters, the

bees.” It’s given both men a new appreciation for honey. Michael says he’s never eaten as much honey as he has in the past year since starting with Taylor Pass Honey. “I had no idea of all the varieties. I’ve got kilos of it in the pantry now. I buy all different sorts at the supermarket…I stop and look at the prices and varieties now, I used to walk blindly past it before.” Jayden says his family loves honey. “It’s a natural product and people are all about that now.” They encourage other people to try the job out as well, but warn that it’s not all honey sandwiches. The work is hot in summer, carried out in full suits with veiled helmets to protect workers from bee stings, and it involves heavy lifting. Stings come with the job, but they say if you’re gentle with the bees, they’re gentle back. Michael says it takes the right sort of person to do the job. “You have to have a passion for all this sort of stuff.”

Transforming with the Home & Garden Show If there is ever an event to give you the inspiration and the means to transform your surroundings, then the Marlborough Home & Garden Show is it! For three days from 8-10 July, over 110 exhibitors will gather at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 to provide a one-stop event for anyone building, renovating or revamping. Industry experts, all passionate about helping home owners beautify their living spaces, will be there with the latest trends, huge variety and impressive savings. Show organiser Daniel Joll says, “with gardening, solar solutions, heating, kitchens, new home building, carpets, insulation, home automation, wood-fired hot tubs and much, much more on offer, there’s something to suit all budgets and tastes. “Better still, many of the products and services will be at special show-only prices. Visitors can bring along their plans to discuss with the experts onsite, browse for home makeover accessories, or simply gather ideas.” One lucky visitor will walk away with a show prize comprising $3000 worth of Solatube Daylighting Systems and installation from HomeTech, plus a 13-piece Stoneline cookware set worth $1200. As an added bonus, there will also be $250 worth of Resene vouchers. Show-goers need only enter their details at the show entrance to be in with a chance to win. “The show will be packed with great ideas for indoors and out, but those interested in flooring should keep an eye out for Harrisons Carpet’s new eco-range of carpet for the home, Scorpio, which will be being showcased to the Blenheim public for the first time. “It originates as recycled soft drink bottles, but is cleverly transformed into luxury cut-pile carpet. “It is fade and stain resistant, heavy duty and comes in nine different colours,” Daniel says. The kitchen is the heart of the home, so it’s only fitting that Nazareth Joinery will be showcasing a full country kitchen, spray painted Resene Villa White.

A wood-fired hot tub from Stoked Stainless Ltd, on a special at the Marlborough Home & Garden Show.

It will feature a Black Pearl Granite benchtop, Piatra Grey Caesarstone benchtop, butler sink and a tile splashback behind a free standing oven. Max George Joinery will be there too, with a good selection of natural granites for bench tops, engineered stone, brochures and samples. These will include the latest laminate tops with new acrylic edging, doors and panels, options for draw systems and runners, bench top pantries and other types of unit. The Crowded House Coffee Company will be showcasing its new Bugatti Diva coffee and POD machine, which uses the traditional Italian espresso method to make beautiful espresso, cappuccino, latte and Americano coffee. Owner Christopher Gauci describes it as “more than just a coffee machine, it’s contemporary art.” The functional and stylish machine accepts ground coffee and coffee pods and if purchased at the show, will save coffee-lovers $295.

Colour, gloss and glamour Style your entranceway to make it more inviting The entryway is the first area of the home that is seen when a person walks through the door, so there is no wonder that a lot of effort is put in to make this space inviting. There are limitless ways you can decorate your entryway. Here are some ideas to help inspire you for your next renovation/building project. Begin by thinking about the decorative style you’d like to convey. For example, if your home has a glamorous vibe, perhaps a mirrored console in the entryway will help set the tone of the house. If comfort is what you’re after, a cushioned bench for seating and some woven baskets for storage may be more appropriate. If charm is what you’re after, consider placing a piece of painted furniture in the entryway. A distressed dresser provides a touch of country style and three drawers of storage. Add an antique mirror and a vase of fresh flowers to soften the look. For a vintage eclectic space mix retro modern seating with antique pieces. A dash of greenery, such as a fern, adds botanical interest.

Make your entrance way inviting and stylish.

If contemporary is the style at hand, hang a trio of modern art pieces on the wall, include some striking sconces, and top it all off with orchids in a bronze sculptured planter.

If space is on your side, as in the case of a large foyer, there’s even more room for you to stamp with your decorative style. Upscale modern is a great style and can be achieved by giving

your entranceway the glossy treatment with a shiny circular table and a sparkling wall. For a colourful effect, a collection of paintings pops against the neutral palette.

Hidden surprises both ways Older home renovations can reveal wonderful surprises, such as an original hardwood floor hidden beneath old, cracked linoleum. Renovating older homes can also uncover less welcome conditions, such as damaged walls hidden behind wallpaper or renovations by previous owners that are not up-to-code. Such discoveries can greatly increase home renovation costs.

When renovating older homes, be alert for the following potential problems: • Asbestos in insulation, flooring or home siding • Electric wiring that needs updating or replacing • Foundation damage • Lead in the plumbing system • Lead paint • Outdated heating systems.

Paint colour trends are brightening up 2016, according to Resene. The trends have come around to perennial favourites – deep blue reds, the striking tone of black and near black, the soothing restfulness of duck egg blue and greyed blues, and the bold pops of orange and yellow to add a touch of upbeat liveliness. Remember your childhood…that playful streak, your willingness to embrace the new and the joy and wonder in the smallest of things? Embrace your inner child and be spontaneous, add that bold happy colour you’ve always loved for a touch of fun. Colours should inspire you, help you feel at home

Liven up those walls and reflect who you are. There is a sense of rejuvenation and reintroducing happy memories of the past to the present, bringing the favourites from our childhood into the lives of our own family. Dusty and smoky, there is a new palette of colours coming through, such as Resene Mesmerise, Resene Soulmate and Resene Abercrombie, that feel timeless, gently weathered and softened over the passage of time. Easy to live with and coordinate, they’re a sophisticated alternative to cleaner pastels. They bring with them a sense of being more grounded and less airy than the pastels of recent years.

Functional laundries a boost Practical laundry rooms are those things that we all wish to have at our homes. Your laundry room doesn’t have to be just functional. It can be comfortable and good looking too. Here are some tips for you if you’re designing a fully functional laundry space. Laundry rooms are usually quite small. Optimise it as much as possible by using little tricks like placing the dryer on top of the washer, using fold down tables as countertops, occupying every inch of available space with open shelves or floor to ceiling cabinets, and so on. Provide enough light in your laundry space.

Utility rooms mostly don’t have windows so besides standard ceiling light fixtures think about such things as under-cabinet strips for example.

Use enough organisers to keep the space uncluttered. You need to sort your clothes, store the detergents somewhere and other cleaning products. Consider adding some bright bold colours if you wish to make your laundry look more funky. Incorporate as much tiles as possible by covering your floors with floor tiles and make a tile splashback around a sink and a washer. A drying rack is also a nice addition to a utility room. It’s a great thing to put some clothes on it if they are still slightly damp after the dryer.

Kids’ room decorating ideas Marvellous metallics Just as metals such as copper, brass and rose gold are continuing to grow in popularity when it comes to decor for adults, these shiny materials are showing up in an increasing number of kids’ rooms. Create mini art galleries The wonders of great artwork! Walls adorned with your child’s artwork displayed in mismatching frames are popping up. Accessorise with patterns An easy way to add flair to any child’s room is with patterned accessories. Bedrooms and playrooms come to life with the addition of colourful and vibrant pillows, rugs and bed throws to create a cheerful space. Collect pieces over time Use individual pieces accumulated over time instead of buying a matching furniture set. Not only is it an excellent way to save but it achieves a colourful and eclectic look, layering in the new with the old. Get creative with paint Rather than painting the wall behind the crib one colour, why not get creative with paint and go for three or four colours? Horizontal or vertical stripes are super dramatic and something like stripes down the middle give the room an instant focal feature.

Members of the Marlborough Kiwi Conservation Club and junior Forest and Bird members visited Kaipupu Point on Sunday and planted about 60 trees. Ashley Nuraeni, aged six, (pictured) and his Dad took part in the day. Club spokeswoman Kathryn Richards says there was a keen group of 23 children and parents who enjoyed the trip. Kaipupu Point’s Andrew John was there to teach the children all about how the sanctuary manages and monitors the pests, she says. “We also got to listen in on the signals from the recently release Rowi Kiwi using the tracking equipment. It was a beautiful Marlborough winter’s day.” For information on joining the Kiwi Conservation Club, email marlborough@kcc.org.nz. The club’s next trip is to Whites bay on July 22 to see glow worms. ‘Vital meetings’ important to farmers A series of meetings to explain the ramifications of the Marlborough District Council’s new Marlborough Environment Plan are being held by Marlborough Federated Farmers over the next week, with the first scheduled for tonight at Ward. Kristy McGregor Federated Farmers regional policy advisor said the proposed plan was of vital importance to farmers. “The Plan will affect what activities you can and cannot do on your farm,” she said. “The Plan covers regulations for activities such as stock access to waterways, silage pits and stacks, vegetation clearance, landscapes, effluent ponds, earthworks, subdivision, offal pits and farm dumps and others.” Kristy said she hoped for farmers to make a good attendance whether members of Federated Farmers or not “All farmers are welcome, bring your neighbours, fill your car. Make sure you mark the date best for you in your diary,” she said.

Academy welcomes circus dance and ballet tutor

Welcome to the WELCOME TO THE SOCIETY CancerCANCER Society MARLBOROUGH Marlborough

Story and photo by Celeste Alexander It’s an exciting time for the newly rebranded Marlborough Academy of Dance as it welcomes a talented new ballet dancer and new circus style dance class. Eric and Wendy Desiles have arrived in Marlborough to settle in Picton, bringing with them their skills and experience in professional acrobatics and circus performing. They are thrilled to be joining the teaching team at Marlborough Dance Academy. Eric trained at the Annie Fratellini and French National Circus Schools from the age of 12, and Wendy is a UK trained dancer and acrobat. They combined their talents to create ‘Duo Des Iles’ 15 years ago and have since performed continually around the world for major cruise lines, in luxury hotels and corporate entertainment. Today they are keen to share their skills with enthusiastic youth, Academy director Robyn Simmons says. “Kids here haven’t been exposed to this before so it’s really exciting to be introducing it. There will be acrobatics, mime, juggling, Wendy Desiles with some young performers. Photo provided. magic and even little unicycles for them to learn with that will be a lot of fun,” she says. Brooklyn croquet party The Brooklyn Croquet Club celebrated its 25th Anniversary last week in the clubrooms at Whitehead Park. To commemorate the occasion a group of more than 40 members, past and present, along with friends, gathered for a special afternoon tea. The current president, Margaret Campbell, outlined the history of the club and proposed a toast to the past, while a former president, Jeff Sawyer, proposed a toast to the future. A special Anniversary Cake was cut by Jean McMullan, a retired club member now in her 90s. The club was formed in 1991, under the presidency of Shirley Sowman. A dedicated committee sourced funding and support from many groups including the Marlborough District Council, Lottery Grants

Club afternoons are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 1-3.30pm followed by afternoon tea. New members and casuals are always welcome, the only requirements are flat soled shoes and a smile. The Marlborough Car Club is opening their grounds in Aerodrome Road on Sunday for people to have a go in an ‘autocross’, driving a track in a paddock around a series of cones. Club president Richard Bateman says the autocross is a great chance for people to have a go in their own car in a controlled environment. “The track is suitable for most roadgoing vehicles but we do not allow 4 wheel drive or mud and snow-type tyres. All you need is a safe vehicle a pair of cotton overalls or approved race suit and an approved helmet.” Vehicle checking and documentation starts at 8am until 9.30am, with racing

starting at 10am. Club members will be available to give pointers and help, he says. Some conditions apply so for full details phone or txt Richard on 021458178. He says the club is always looking for marshalls, startline crews, and others for club events. “So if you have always wanted to get involved with motorsport but didn’t know how, this is your chance. “You get to see some of the best local drivers in action from the best vantage points, and helpers quite often get rides also. Full training is given. “We are a very social club and we have a lot of laughs.”

Geoff Canham says he is ‘almost evangelical’ about the way Marlborough does things. “If you’re a person that likes sport in the country, you’d want to live in Blenheim, Seddon, or Picton. “It’s going well for you and it’s a critical time. “It’s only once in a few generations, things have to come together, and you have that with the development of Lansdowne Park, the Awatere Memorial Community Hall, the second stage of the Endeavour Park pavilion.” Council reserves and amenities’ Mark Witehira says Geoff has been recommended to council by Sport NZ.

“He’s got vast experience around the country on this.’ Geoff says the changes with sport means now is an ‘exciting’ time for Marlborough. The district is collaborating really well on the potential options, he says, and there is good communication between council and sports leaders and the community. “Most communities are still struggling with that stuff and are resigned to fall out with each other and have biffo. Here, you’re across that and starting the conversations that need to happen. “People aren’t getting the plan and being asked to like it or not, like the cities do. It’s ground-up stuff.” Geoff says the work around the sports hub proposal for Lansdowne Park will affect the next 80 years of sport in Marlborough. He says spor ts leaders in

Paddon and Kennard on the podium Hayden Paddon and John Kennard have secured third place at Rally Poland, the first time the Kiwis have finished on this step of the podium. Third place in Poland represents the third podium finish in the 2016 FIA World Rally Championship for the New Zealanders who also finished second in Sweden and won in Argentina. The result also moves Paddon into third place in the WRC drivers’ championship. “We’re really happy to come home with a podium,” said Paddon who finished just 2.3 seconds Hayden Paddon and John Kennard with their third place in the Rally Poland. behind Ott Tanak after 21 comThe seventh WRC round of petitive stages, who dropped to ing for most of the rally, handing the year wrapped with a wet and second with a puncture after lead- Andres Mikkelsen the win.

Blenheim Valley United crowned champions With a game in hand and fielding an understrength side, BV United battled well against Central earning them a 2-2 draw thanks to a Tom Downes brace. That result meant they could not be beaten in the Mens Division One Football competition. Scott Wilkinson and Steve McCaa goals were good but not good enough for Central. There was an abundance of goals in the other games with Central Pirates getting up over Rangers City with Kane Sullivan showing some great skills in scoring twice. Blenheim Valley Masters bounced back after conceding in the first minute of play, beating club mates Blenheim Valley Cobras 5-4 thanks to a Ben Clarke hat-trick. Clubs of Marlborough Rangers took the 2nd division title with just the one goal to Paul Alexander. The 1-0 score line was enough as their

nearest rivals Rangers Masters were upset by Rangers United 5-0. It was good news also for Picton Crow Tavern picking up their first win of the season over Trojans 2-1 while Picton Panel and Paint also had a 2-1 win over Wadsco Trucks Redwood Masters.

slippery morning of action on Sunday. “They were very, very tricky conditions and it was very hard to judge your speed,” Paddon said, having set the fifth quickest time in all four Sunday stages. “The rain made the stages very slippery and overall today was tricky, having to try and control the position, but in the end we got good points and got the result. “So that’s our first third place and it takes a huge amount of weight off my shoulders after what’s happened recently. “The result gives us really good confidence moving forward and I’m really happy to get things back on track.”
